looking at the list of confirmed returning pokemon for scarlet and violet i cant help but feel nervous X] no gastrodon yet, and it HAS been in almost every single pokemon game since its release so im worried they’re gonna give it a break... (then again snorunt has been in every pokemon game i’ve played too so...) 

and then also just.... out of the returning pokemon families so far, 50 were in sword and shield (including the expansion pass) and 22 weren’t...

Just a random ask, what are some weird JTTW adaptations you’ve seen or heard about?

I can’t even begin to call them all but… if you bear with me, I shall try.

Here are a few games that I always found funny additions!

Starting off strong we have Journey to the West: Undersea Adventure (2021)! I have never seen it but LOOK AT IT.... THEY FISH

Six-eared Monkey (2021) where Six Ears goes back in time, accidentally adopts Wukong not knowing he is his future enemy and gives his life to save Child-Wukong despite knowing who he grows up to be.

Wukong's Christmas Adventure (2019) is like... saving Ruphdolh or something and Wukong is going through a mid-life crisis and also kinda depressed but CHRISTMAS. Also the Erlang and Nezha models in this movies are TERRIFYING... and also they have Wukong rap so take a look.

Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013) is weird but like in a GREAT way like... I love the monster designs they give Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing, it is such a different vibe then any other movie I have seen and Honestly LOVE It for that. Really sells just how HUMAN Sanzang is dealing with POWERFUL YAO that could kill him in a second.

Bling (2016) is strong that it didn't hAVE to be Xiyouji coded characters like the Monkey, Pig, and Frog are robot storage performers, wannabe heroes and they follow their creator who is trying to propose to his girlfriend but there really is not journey or ANY need to have the robot being Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing.

Spark: A Space Tail (2016) is also BARELY a Xiyouji film but like it does have a monkey with a staff and turns out he is the son of a king and a queen of monkey planet. Really more like Lion King with the evil uncle trying to take over but with space monkeys.... and also Bajie is there.

Mo mo King (2011) is something I'm not completely sure what's it about but just that it is like a whole monkey island that Wukong-like protag works at... and also Bajie is there.

Devil's Chip (2002) again NO idea what it is really about but there is space and time travel and for some ungodly reason no wukong from what I have seen but Sanzang and Bajie company the space/time travler

Flying Monkid (1996) I have no idea why this was ever MADE like there is barely a connection to Wukong and every other demon is new or some kind of version that is barely recognizable, not to mention the animation is barely any better than Pixal art.

Flying Superboard (1990) I always just found this one strange from the animation to the art style to the design choices. Like making Wukong some kind of skateboard, nunchuck, mouse-looking creature and giving Bajie a machine gun is.... something. I have no idea what they did to Wujing, made him like a bat, goblin thing.

Midnight Goku (1989) is like a sci-fi detective story where the protag has like computer eyes that can see through people and a bo-staff and honestly, I haven't seen but just the STRETCH they use to make this Wukong-related is so insane like would have never thought of it.

Little Wukong (1987) honestly not SURE what this story is even about but like... it is nearly lost media, this is so obscure and out of the way I have a feeling it was probs a children's education show or something but idk.

The Legend of Red Boy (1989) is something that looks like candy land spat out and while I have not seen it I am so sure that it is filled with nonsensical elements I cannot begin to describe.

King Kong's Adventures in the Heavenly Palace (1959) is... more of a crossover than anything else. Just imagine a movie where instead of Wukong destroys heaven... it is Kind Kong. Legit THE king Kong from the OTHER MOVIES YES.

Pink Journey to the West (2015) is honestly not that strong I would say besides that it is just Journey to the West but they are all girls... haven't seen it but who knows maybe it is good!

About a week into the ongoing Atlantis Challenge by @knuppitalism-with-ue and these are my current entries. I want to challenge myself this time by going with different mediums of art for the individual entries as well.

Unsurprisingly, my favourite entry concerns the two species of crocodilians I submitted, both with their own inspiration. Obviously the cookoo caiman is inspired by cookoo birds, but theres also elements of chinese alligators (for being "chatty") and dwarf caimans (for wandering around). The whole "chirping to get the attention of larger species" is partially inspired by an annectode of researchers handling the juvenile of a smaller species (iirc a New Guinea, tho I might be wrong) only to be charged by a large adult saltie. The Loggerhead takes its design from extinct species like Kinyang and Baru, making my gator from phase 2 more robust. The flaring tail osteoderms are an exaggerated version of something I've seen in a particular Orinoco croc. Both were drawn traditionally with pencil and colored digitally.

The Zeus quail is mostly for fun. Again based on an entry from last phase (the Olympian quail) I went all out with the Zeus comparisson because idk, felt like it would be interesting. The anatomy is based on large, robust birds like grouse. Obviously I used watercolors in the execution.

And then there's the Garden Howler, an ape like plesiadapiform with a face only a mother could love. Hell even as the creator I think they are ugly as sin, but thats the point. Fully digital is not something I do a lot, but again, experimenting. Inspiration comes from both the Greek Sirens (the bird like ones) sitting in rocky areas and singing (like howlers monkeys or gibbons in this case). There's obviously elements of proboscis monkeys and a touch of mermaid hints with their habit of diving into water if available.

i think this (chapter 9) is probably my favorite chapter of journey to the west so far. it's the first real human narrative we see, but beyond that, idk, I tried to read jttw on my own a few years ago and this chapter stood out to me even then for reasons I still don't really quite understand. I was talking about this with someone recently, the concept of cultivating merits to neutralize bad consequences from deeds in past lives like what happens with chen guangrui, and there's something really special about it here. i wonder if it's meant to be just an element of the story, or if there's spiritual allegory in it, or both, or just if there are any commentaries about it. but also just the dragon palace as a location has always really interested me because of my parallel interest in underwater cities. but idk, i just have always really like this chapter for some reason.

another thing too is just i think monkey is so relatable. his pride, his inability to really consider consequences, his regrets mostly being tied to other people punishing him. i've always liked him but i never thought trying to read this again i would relate to him so much lol

Just wanted to comment that I found your post about the five pillars of magic and who is proficient in which so incredibly interesting! I was actually kinda surprised that Little Star had no experience in Shadow because I’ve gotten the impression that Macaque had more of the role of teacher with them than Wukong did at that time, and he had MK delve into it a little, but I guess the circumstances were VERY different with Macaque actually training Star but manipulating MK to siphon his powers when they first met (actually intrigued about your take on that in the Constellations verse) but obviously you as the author have more info on the characters than we as the audience do.

Poor MK is the only one not proficient in an area yet 😭 but tbh considering he’s so young compared to the rest of them and has been training officially for even less (I guess approximately a year? Maybe more or less? Idk the timelines help) then I think he’s doing real good! My guess would be that he’s gonna master either Celestial or possibly Elemental first since I guess that’s some of what Wukong had been teaching him so far and we know MK takes after him a lot in certain areas? Plot twist would be if you have some mega angst planned and he ends up mastering Death first (I remember Wukong mentioning that the golden flowers of his birth might have appeared in the Underworld too?), orrrr maybe he’ll end up being a Jack of All Trades, Master of None? Anyway MK baby I believe in you 🧡

I'm glad you liked that post, I should reblog it more so others can see 😭Macaque did have a strong role in training Little Star, but the prerequisites for training in shadow are difficult...and not exactly something that sounds fun. To Little Star, magic is fun first and foremost. I don't think they'd be interested (or patient enough) to train in shadow magic. Macaque would respect that.

Huh. 🤔If I had to explain in a constellations!way or how I see it happening, Macaque was manipulating the shadows in MK's heart and mind, pulling on that emotion of wanting to be a great student, powerful and cool enough so that Monkey King would be impressed by him. We know, at this point, that MK was wondering if Wukong thought he'd made a mistake in choosing MK as his successor. Macaque would've honed in on that feeling of inadequacy and used it to his advantage.

So, then, Macaque could give power to MK in that way. Once Macaque can control/see the shadows in someone's heart and mind, it's exceptionally easy for him to manipulate them. Macaque can give them nightmares, conversely, he can also prevent nightmares by this same manipulation (this will come up later). I'd like to think that he needs to have some feeling to go off of, y'know. A way to get his foot in the door. Training with MK in season 1 was Macaque finding that way in, and he grabbed hold of it, and...the reset of the episode happened. That's how I'd explain it, anyway. So MK doesn't know shadow magic formally. He's just felt it and somewhat controlled it...kind of.

No, MK is not proficient...yet. In Constellations, the first three seasons of the show took place in two years. Right now, in the epilogue, we are in...May! Of the third year (yes i have this fic planned down to the timeline, leave me alone). The epilogue will end in, roughly, September. MK will be training that whole time.

So he's been training for about two and a half years. I'd say he's making great progress! He's mastered the 72 transformations, and once he's directed his celestial magic to interact with all of the elements, he'll have crossed another milestone. For magic proficiency, we have to think...smaller. Like by individual spells. For an immortal, time is nothing. For MK? Every second counts, and he's learning fast. He's great at cloud-somersaulting already after his first attempt. That's fucking astounding since it even took Wukong some time to master. You're right that he's doing great!!

MK is focusing on celestial and elemental right now, yes. This will come up in chapter 6 of the epilogue. And! In chapter 3, Macaque and Wukong discussed the order of teaching MK the elements. In their minds, that means MK has a solid foundation in celestial magic, enough so that they can push him to do more elemental things.

Interesting that you'd mention death magic...what a plot twist that would be, indeed. 😁We'll have to see what happens. But! I do love the idea of MK being a jack of all trades. I just love characters like that. But, if I were to put a celestial primate in that category right now, it'd be Macaque. But that's just because he loves magic so much.

Wukong did say that MK's birth made golden flowers bloom in every realm (this is very important) along with an earthquake. So! Golden flowers from MK's birth are in the Underworld! Wonder what happened with them, huh.

Heyo guys! I'm back with an art dump, sooo these'll be either drawings i forgot to post, not fully finished orr just left out since life happened. Ah and i'm so sorry for the long wait! I've been driving myself a bit insane with saving up money for december, with a shopping trip coming up on the 19th, andd trying to think of what members of my family would want for Christmas, sooo yeah.

Anyways, let's get on with the artwork shall we?

First off, macaque!!! Tho kinda combined his Monkey King 2009 design with the lego style monkie kid's in, as a sort of past version i guess? Like his cape over the years grew darker in colour and gotten a bit more worn down. And with his new powers, came the black fur?

Here's some training drawings i've tried doing, since i want to get better with harder and more dynamic kind of poses. Annd, heyy! RJ got a new outfit! And ngl i'm starting to like the colour pallet i used for it 😍

Ohhh i drew that pose a whiile back but never got to finishing it til today, sooo i turned it into a drawing of Tang with a sort of outfit i thought up...tho idk why but i kinda see harry potter instead of him 😅

For this drawing, i had been thinking, Sun wukong has the scarf, andd Macaque has a cape, sooo why not give MK a red bandana? Like he could have wanted to match Sun a bit more, with being his successor, and Rummaged through some old stuff of his and found it? Orrr maybe tang or pigsy gave it to him? I'm not sure, either way, i love how it turned out.

Ooohhh this is a fun one! My idea of how Mk and Red Son had RJ was, maybe during a sparring session or fight, something happened anndd well, in a nut shell, RJ was born from a stone egg (Pftt-Try explaining to your son how children were made when they came from an Egg 😅), I had to reference the egg mk came from well, from the pilot episode,but add in some fire elements to reference Red Son's fire powers. As RJ is a combo of both of them.

Oohhh 🤣 i wanted to do some muscle practise sooo it turned into a shirtless Red Son drawing..whiich i'm considering drawing one of the other character's reactions to it. I ain't saying who tho~

These were part of a small art challange i came up with, i drew Red Son and MK buut, i used a colour generator to colour them in. I was going through art block at the time soo, it really helped out!

Annd here are the last few! I was watching a youtuber try out a couple tik tol art challenges and i saw this one, "If you see this, draw your oc as: Normal, Genderbent, Child(Past Self), Royalty, and Villain". I haven't gotten onto the villain part yet buut i thought i should at least show these.

Here are the last 2! I loved seeing people's versions of a swap au sooo, I thought I'd try doing my own! Just, i guess you could call it a "Swapped Destiny AU"? Mk is the full son of DBK and Princess iron fan, And Red Son is the Monkey king successor! There were other ideas of Bai-He(Lady bone demon's vessel/Possessed girl), and Mei being swapped around, andd Sun and Macaque swapping roles too. Buut that's something for another day!

hihihi i wanna ask your perspective do you think jinx actually has no agency?? i remember seeing comments like that and i disagree bcs jinx never felt like a passive characrer, but im a bit confused bcs agency is when the character acts not just reacts and has their own ambitions/goals. jinx doesnt have personal goals of her own so would that automatically make her have no agency? she does rebel against her superior's wishes and does as she please but is that considered acting or reacting?

im very sure that agency works in more complex ways that is used for jinx's character that makes her feel more alive and active than any other character, i just dont know how to put my finger on it

she does have agency, I think the two reasons people remove her agency by either describing her like a passive character or saying she doesn't have any are:

a) we know the cause and effect of her choice, why she does the things she does and who influences her, jinx is probably the character we examine the most closely in arcane. but the fact that she's influenced by people around her and things that happened to her doesn't mean her choices aren't hers

b) the choices jinx makes are irrational and impulsive and not very good but they ARE internally consistent

in general, when we speak about character agency it means actions that affect the story, decisions that are meaningful within the story. jinx is really the main catalyst of most events in arcane, and you can trace it to specific choices such as going to the cannery to help out and setting off the monkey bomb or the whole finale that was set off just by her own actions. yes, they were influenced by other characters because these storylines have to interact and character arcs should overlap instead of being separate elements of one story but that doesn't mean they aren't HER choices and that they aren't pivotal to her character. a character doesn't need to be active all the time either, you can have things happen to them - like jinxs and vis parents dying or jinx being brought to singeds lab - and have their reactions to those things set off chains of events

agency in storytelling is a broad topic tho because some stories might be more unconventional - litfic might lean more passive in terms of characters (think about books where nothing happens like my year of rest and relaxation or a little life where things just kind of happen to the main character) while commercial fiction tends to follow broadly the storytelling beats we all know from blockbuster movies and fantasy books and whatnot

a character goal can also be something that isn't very specific, for example jinxs character goal is to keep people from abandoning her and that drives her actions - its not a specific goal like silco wanting independence for zaun or vi wanting to get jinx back but it is an emotional goal which can also be a story beat.

if you think of two lines going through a story you will have:

one line that is the plot so just the actual events of the story that happen in chronological order - these can include physical goals like idk, look at caitlyn and we see that we set off on a journey to get the stolen hex gem back and we go to stillwater to investigate or whatever. this would be the line where someone might not see the exact cause and effect and goals in jinxs character

a line that is a character arc, these are the emotional story beats and goals so using caitlyn again as an example - wanting to prove herself, connecting with vi, wanting to help vi and undercity etc etc will be the emotional threads that go through those plot beats. this is where majority of jinxs goals and motivations operate as she very marginally gives a fuck about zauns independence or hex gems - these are also the story beats that are most likely to resonate with the audience because you probably aren't out there saving the world but you've been lonely or abandoned or whatever before and you don't just understand those motivations, you can feel them on emotional level. this is also the layer of a story that will most likely look like ASS in your first drafts and if you're working on edits and think this shit sucks it's likely that something is not working in this layer

ive mentioned it before but i wanna go real in depth this time. still not certain on every detail so some have multiple options

this post will be updated as i get more ideas i swear ill remember to update it lol

Naoya - anemo sword/bow/catalyst (sword because he has a sword, bow because he has a gun, catalyst because only spells can hit any enemy in the grid system of the game)

Skill: yeah ive got nothin lmfao. maybe something about summoning the monkeys seimen kongou holds?

Burst: ?????

Tatsuya - pyro sword

Skill: uhhh maybe he summons a motorcycle made of fire and rushes around running enemies over?

Burst: nova kaiser. he creates a shockwave of AoE pyro damage. enemies caught in the blast will be in a state of stasis for a short duration

Maya - cryo bow (bow because guns also make projectiles)

Skill: diamond dust. it creates a field in which characters and enemies are applied cryo, and characters are healed (because she also knows dia)

Burst: omni dimension. similar to venti, she creates an orb of cryo in the air and draws enemies into it, dealing cryo damage

Makoto - pyro sword

Skill: dark hour. during its duration, a burning moon appears above all characters, boosting attack damage

Burst: great seal. while makoto is on the field, he will periodically take damage, restoring the health of all characters. also triggers the dark hour moon (im not really sure about the balancing here... maybe it should still take effect even after switching him out? but then it feels op yknow?)

Kotone - pyro polearm

Skill: same as makoto?

Burst: same as makoto?

Narukami - electro claymore

Skill: midnight channel. similar to keqing, he can either press or hold the button to place two square portals beside himself and a short distance away (get it its shaped like a tv screen but purple because genshin mechanics). he will then jump into the square beside him and appear through the other one. maybe he deals AoE electro damage when he pops out?

Burst: idk i have a couple ideas. maybe he creates a field of fog that deals electro damage until he cuts through it dealing massive damage? maybe he summons an other self made of electro that also attacks with him?

Ren - hydro polearm (hydro because it seems to relate to morality and justice and tbh eiha looks blobby and liquid, polearm because its a dagger on a stick)

Skill: beneath the mask. ren rushes forward and performs AoE hyrdo damage, placing enemies in the range under the mask effect. this lowers their defense

Burst: sinful shell. just kinda makes a giant hydro explosion around him lol

edit: someone in a discord server proposed that ren (but i think maya could be considered too) is actually a catalyst and their method of casting the spells is gun. i imagined they like summon an elemental construct in the shape of a gun and use it to shoot snowballs and water balls lol

I always like to think that Puti pushed Wukong away knowing that he was destined for better things but it's hard to back that up with the whole "you're only going to get in evil and I don't want to hear it" kind of tough love.

Thought I do have some recs for you!

There is a fantastic comic by @antidotefortheawkward about Wukong and Master Puti meeting again. It's short but honestly created a fav headcanon that Puti was the one to tell the world he was Wukong's teacher as another 'riddle' Wukong had to see through.

Another is actually a movie called 2022Jounrey to the West: Marble Mountains 大梦西游之五行山/ Great Dream Journey to the West: Five Elements Mountains! This kinda follows the entire plot with Wukong's battle with fighting with himself and the last remaining of what his last master wanted from him. And while a little insane it has three different Xiyouji character designs in this movie, it is such a ride.

I've seen a few other adaptions try to make a cool twist with Puti, most making him either a father figure to Wukong, like in Immortal Demon Slayer or Monkey King 2014, but I haven't seen one where it like "I'm going to rise above the exceptions you thought I could never achieve."

I think there is a big consciousness in the Xiyouji fandom that Puti is "father figure" or at least the best mentor figure ever so Idk if we are ever going to get like him REALLY being cruel but there are a good number that shows that the separation was just as hard for him as it was for Wukong. I always wondering if we could get to see how Wukong could either really struggle in school or really thrive. I really love that Mei Hou Wang 2009 takes it time to show how Wukong learned and was taught but to see something live-action with a lot of drive into him struggling. Only to come out thriving when he finally starts to learn how he can THAT would be something.

This is the man that gave Wukong his NAME. The name that he never had, something that set him apart from demons very the very start.

Master Puti made Wukong just a little more human by giving him that. And that is something Wukong can never separate from himself.

They are soooooo cool looking: Self explanatory. Renji just looks cool, whether he’s a skrunkly little howler monkey or flashing the most ludicrous drip that could only ever look good on him, or when he’s covered in blood, or sleeping in a warehouse in the middle of a blood war. Best-dressed in all of Soul Society, and also Karakura, and Hueco Mundo, and Hell.

They’re deeper than they seem: Like the Ukitake and Kyouraku one, I waffled on whether to choose this one or not, because I think Renji is exactly as deep as the text suggests he is. There is plenty of depth right there on the page. But I think about how Renji might come across to general audiences who don’t have weird Tumblr hyperfixation illnesses of the brain—like, what impression my mom would come away with if she were to watch random episodes of Bleach on TV—and that version of Renji is a less interesting Renji, if perhaps an easy one to end up with.

A bit ago I ended up on a Reddit thread (after Googling "when was the Quincy genocide?"—as one does) that was a bunch of people complaining about how… useless??? Renji???? was???? (Well, they were complaining about both Renji and Hitsugaya, but this post is about Renji.) I mean, I disagree, but I was fascinated by what the thread’s frames of reference were, and what assumptions they were built on. It was a very different world from the one that floats around in my head. It had a lot to do with kill counts and win/lose ratios. I don’t say this because I don’t care about the fighting element of Bleach (I like the fighting quite a bit). But I also feel like if you don’t die, and no one else dies, then that counts as a win for a shinigami. They’re fighting monsters, not participating in some kind of sports tournament. XP Even irrespective of that, though, Renji is easily one of the most capable and dependable out of all of these fuckers, both because he has a giant bone snake AND because he’s "deeper than he seems." Aggressive and quick-acting, yes, but also kind of a planner? He clearly thinks about all of these things a lot. He thinks a lot about both bone snake things and about things in general. And he has about 80% of all the interpersonal skills in the entire Gotei. He has character depth and roster depth.

Didn’t Get Enough Screen Time: Okay Renji probably got a lot of screen time, but I feel like we could have done with more, right? Always more. He is in my Top 5 Favorite Characters, which obviously means I’m completely unbiased when it comes to how much Renji I think should exist. Where’s my filler episode about Renji instituting the 6th Division Caper Chart, where’s the futsal episode (don’t you dare @ me, Episode 132), and idk, I would have loved to have seen him have more interesting things to do in the Hueco Mundo arc. That was a great arc for Rukia, Orihime, and Ichigo, but I don’t really remember what anyone else got to do (minus Byakuya, but I attach that to Rukia). I mean, Renji looked good in a travel cloak, so there’s that. But if that arc lacked for something it was probably in excellent and plentiful Renji content, I guess? For comparison, please bear in mind exactly how many chapters we spent on that ELEPHANT ARRANCAR GUY.

They are So Cool Looking/If They Were Real I Would be Afraid/Why Do They Look Like That: We all know Renji looks cool. 90% of the time, he’s the one bringing the swag. He looks awesome, and honestly I think he knows it. At the same time, you have to admit he looks terrifying. He is 6’2”, built like a brick wall, has flaming red hair, and intimidating tattoos. He also works as the equivalent of a Soul Society cop. If I were to just meet this guy on the street, I’d be afraid. This also brings up the age old question — why does he look like that. What’s with the tattoos that he is so proud of, but also very sensitive about? I’ve seen lots of head canons about Renji’s tattoos and I think they’re all very fun to consider. (But also lol consider that maybe the tattoos are something that happens every time Renji gets drunk. It’s like a series of low inhibition decisions are just being displayed for the world to see, but deep down he never would’ve gotten them if some part of him didn’t also think they were awesome.)

They’re Deeper Than They Seem: I’m a bit conflicted on this, because I don’t necessarily think Renji is any deeper than he is presented in the series. Which is not to say he doesn’t have plenty of depth. But I also think this because I have spent a long long long time thinking about Renji and picking apart his every appearance, and I don’t think most people have spent quite so much time doing so. During my first brush with Bleach, Renji was one of my favorite characters, but it was because he looked cool and acted flashy and beat people up. He has a freakin awesome zanpakuto that’s a skeleton snake! It wasn’t until this time around that I began to appreciate Renji for his thoughtfulness, leadership skills, and friendship. I’ve mentioned this before, but one of my favorite Renji moments is when he has the group do an old-fashioned team chant in Hueco Mundo. It’s so defining for how conceive of him, and why I think there’s a lot more to him than initially meets the eye.

They’re Like a Blorbo/They Didn’t Get Enough Screen Time: Look, I love Renji. He’s definitely in my Top 5 Characters. I might even go so far as to say Top 3? I spend a lot of my idle time thinking about him just because. And we have plenty of Renji screen time, but I could always do with more. Like, I would love to see more about how he spent his time in 11th. Or, as whipplefilter said FUTSAL EPISODE.

Free Space: I’d love to learn more about his relationship with Byakuya. Because at the time story starts, Renji has been Byakuya’s vice captain for what, a month? And even by the end of the series, it’s barely been a couple of years. In the shinigami scheme of things, that is a relatively new relationship (consider how long Yamamoto and Sasakibe were working together). I’ve seen quite a lot of fic that touches on how Renji’s presence influences Byakuya, but how much does Byakuya influence Renji? Certainly Byakuya has influenced Renji quite a bit from afar (in fact Byakuya was a major contributor in Renji’s life trajectory for 40yrs), but that was more Renji’s conception of Byakuya. Now that Renji works with real flesh-and-blood Byakuya, what’s changed?

They Work Better as Part of a Dynamic: Don’t get me wrong, I think Renji stands his own perfectly well as an individual agent. To be honest, his fighting style and zanpakutou type don’t really lend themselves all that well to group fighting. BUT, I love Renji in a team. Hueco Mundo Team Chant. Renji’s futsal team. I really love the Ishida & Renji vs Szayelaporro fight because of the teamwork involved. These two barely know each other, but they make it work (largely because of Renji, I think). Now imagine what Renji and Byakuya could look like 5-10yrs down the line. I still think Hitsugaya and Matsumoto are Captain/Vice-Captain Teamwork #goals, but I’d love to imagine a future where Byakuya and Renji have conceived of some kind of Senbonzakura/Zabimaru bone-snake/cherry blossom tornado or something.

Oh hey, I just realized something. In most media, the 'elements' so to speak tend to include not just fire, water, grass, and lighting, but wind and earth as well. Now earth not being in the mix is its own thing due to your own take on the FYR universe + the shenanigans bn Groudon and Kyogre and all that, but what about 'wind' or Flying types in this case? Is this due to the idea that most flying type attacks are pretty doable by a handful of commons and others? Since a lot of bugs, normal type, and fighting type mons, etc. can learn Aerial Ace or Acrobatics either naturally or by TM.

Granted not all mons can learn things like Hurricane, Gust, or Air Slash, or hell even Aeroblast. So I was wondering where you drew the line on that

This ask has been sitting in my inbox for quite a while and I don't wanna ignore it any further, but tbh the reason I've hesitated to answer it is cause I don't actually know HOW to answer it. The lines between the races in FYRverse were drawn somewhat arbitrarily. The categories make sense to my monkey brain, I put types together that feel like they should go together, and that's pretty much it. It's hard to defend a choice like that! Flying could've certainly been elementals if I'd wanted them to be. But, idk, monkey brain says flying is common dsfjkhdskjfdsfg.

Hiya! I created a campaign a while ago that was based on 'Journey to the West'. I was running it with 5e rules (mostly because that was the only system I know) but I tried to change it by limiting the races and trying for a less magical world. However I ran into the problem that because the game is still made for high fantasy everyone has magic, I found that my players were having literally no challenges in fights or even puzzles because they had magic and no one else did.

I have since been looking to revamp the game in a different system entirely, but I really don't know what to look for. I want something that still lets my players feel special and have some magic, but I don't want it to be so high fantasy. Also if there is anything that also incorporates a karma system of some kind, I would like that too.

If you have any recommendations I would be very grateful!

Oof, I gotta admit that I'm not all that familiar with Journey to the West but I do know that there's a monkey guy in it.

Seriously though, depending on which elements of Journey to the West you want to focus on I could see it run using a bunch of different systems. My first instinct would be Legends of the Wulin, which is a pretty dang great wuxia RPG, but having said that that game might actually be a bit too grounded for Journey to the West: I mean, Legends of the Wulin is the sort of game where warriors can do physics-defying combat feats by default, and because the wuxia genre is full of supernatural elements so is Legends of the Wulin, but to my understanding Journey to the West is big on really powerful mythic heroes?

If I wanted to focus on the journey part of Journey to the West I might consider Ryuutama, a Japanese tabletop RPG that's all about going on a trip with your friends. It might seem a bit weird to suggest a Japanese RPG for running a game inspired by a Chinese novel, but said novel has also been pretty influential in Japan and idk Ryuutama owns. It definitely hits the spot of having the characters have access to magic but magic not being overwhelmingly powerful.

And if you actually want mythic heroes then I'd recommend Godbound, but based on your criteria it would probably not be a good fit. Godbound is a game all about playing divine heroes. The base level for characters is pretty much demigodlike. The reason I'm even suggesting it is that to me it feels pretty much on the same level as the supernatural stuff that happens in Journey to the West AND while Godbound does have magic (in addition to divine miracle) it isn't quite as versatile as in D&D. Of course coming up with challenges and puzzles for a group of literal demigods is going to be tough but idk could be fun.

Of those three games Godbound is available for free on DriveThruRPG so I definitely recommend checking it out. And if anyone reading this would like to chime in, please do!

this is tough honestly but because it's about the source material i'll go off my s/i instead of modern au 🤔 i think introducing my s/i (and hp) to diego much earlier on in the race offers extra emphasis/insight into his distrust of people, like... there's so much angst and anger between the two of them. he's a prick who has no problem expressing his disgust with the lower class and people in general, meanwhile my s/i is like his total opposite - she's humble to a fault, distrusts the upper class, and could not care less about diego's prestige. the tension between the two is Interesting and they bring out the worst in each other for a good while before they get over themselves and fall in love much later on

(looking at the entirety of arctic monkeys' discography) oh boy UHHH ACTUALLY i'll ignore that and throw a curve ball: i recently added 'stargazing' by the neighbourhood to my self-ship playlist 🥺 it contains very important elements of dinokat: - cars (pull it out of park, put it in drive / better keep the ac on for me / windows start to fog) our first kiss is in diego's car, we take a lot of road trips, in general a lot of Bonding and intimacy (both emotional and physical) takes place in his car - tension/mutual pining (it's a race against the clock, but we don't wanna watch / might've set the bar a little too high) we're so annoying bc we liked each other for a while and i was too afraid to admit it to both myself and him, he was too afraid to ruin the bond we have bc it's so rare for him to make close connections and he didn't want to lose that - and an eventual sort of.. Sudden admission of feelings (all the patience that i've got, it's not enough to save me / started with a spark, now we're on fire) again, both of us admitted our feelings in his car HFDKS, it happened fast (a little too fast for my liking) and it felt very like !!!!! help, i really like you !!!!! ??? idk if that makes sense, basically it was bubbling up for a while

the obvious answer is that diego harbors general distaste for people and he's Very self-centered VS me, who's Very self-less and tends to see the good in people. he truly doesn't care about anyone outside of himself and his small circle, while i would drop everything including my own well-being just to help someone, even if i don't really know them. BUT because we're on two opposite ends of the spectrum i think we both view the other's outlook as sort of.. inspiring, i guess. maybe we wouldn't outwardly admit it (bc we're both STUBBORN LOL) but we can take aspects of each other's outlooks and apply it to ourselves. like obviously i don't want to be AS selfish as him but i can realistically see how taking a crumb of that and applying it to myself would greatly improve my life. putting my own well-being above others is something i can definitely use and would benefit from. and maybe diego can learn to be a little more compassionate by watching the way it makes me feel good to care for other people. but also i think our similarities are wonderful :'))) we can agree on aesthetics and music and humor and general opinions on things (outside of the things i mentioned above) and that really makes things so much more fun!!!!
