Not Madhouse having some pro animators doing simple hand wringing the likes of which has never been seen on screen. And then the weight of Stark's coat and later when Fern yeets hers...

Incredible.

That entire POV. Imagine sitting in a room and being paid to brainstorm that entire series of event?

I'm also thrilled by the way they aren't sacrificing small things for the sake of battle. It's bonkers we can have a fight this good that retains character moments like Fern's delicate stepping aside because she's way ahead of poor Lugner.

His cold and succint analysis of the situation was really superb lol He realised exactly where their differences lay and why he was getting owned.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 7 Review - Dealing With Demons
I love the insight to demons in this episode. While Qual was a demon and was introduced back in Episode 3, demon lore is fully explained in this one. I really like how demons are portrayed in this anime compared to other fantasy stories. Usually, demons are portrayed as villainous but still have human traits that make people want to root for them. In this story, demons are beings with sociopathic and psychopathic traits. They’re not necessarily “evil” for the sake of being so, but they’re evil because they lack empathy and sympathy, which makes them seen as inhuman and immoral by creatures that can feel these things—mainly people.

The flashback of Frieren and Himmel encountering the demon child was actually rather terrifying from a broader perspective. The child ate someone’s daughter, yet with the way it wailed for her mother caused people to lower their guard. The village chief took her in because of that and he paid the consequences with his life. The demon child does not understand the concept of family, which was why she was fine with killing the village chief and giving the grieving couple his daughter because she’s “a daughter”, despite her not being theirs. What the village chief did was basically trying to “domesticate” the most feral creature but failing. The village chief’s action can be seen as stupid and asinine, but it also shows that sometimes, human empathy can be either the strongest weapon or it could be our downfall.
The demons introduced in the current timeline, Lugner, Linie and Draht, show that demons remained the same as they did before. Reasoning with them is impossible and because of that, they’re very good villains to deal with. Like how the demon child used the word “mother” to play onto empathy, Lugner uses “father” to do the same, despite not knowing what they word truly means. They’re definitely cunning creatures at best. Frieren despises demons, which was why she was on full-on assault mode the moment she sensed them. I do like how Stark was like “Can’t we reason with them since they can speak?” Because that was the village chief did in the past, but failed to do so. The fact that demons communicate using the human tongue in order to deceive them makes them terrifying. The voice actors for the three demons did an excellent job making their voices so monotonous that they’re devoid of emotions.
The fact that they’re goons to the bigger threat, Aura the Guillotine, makes them the first real threat to the story so far. The story had minor “threats” like Qual and the Solar Dragon and they were defeated pretty quickly. I know for a fact that Draht is just child’s play to Frieren, so he’ll be easily defeated by her, but I do wonder about Linie and Lugner. How strong are they?
Other parts of the episode I liked was seeing Frieren getting rewarded for waking up early and Fern and Stark’s banter. I like that the lighthearted aspect of the episode was in the beginning to make viewers feel good before delving into the heavier and darker aspects in regards to the demons.
I’m anticipating for next week’s episode. How will Frieren, Fern and Stark deal with the demon infestation in the town? What are your thoughts about this episode?
