The Fundie Baby Voice™️ has been popping up a lot in ex-christian spaces lately and I actually had one in middle school and part of high school! I learned when and where to use it and how to turn up my southern accent just enough. I can still do it but it sounds weird after 3 years on T. The main place I used it was at church cause it made me sound sweet and polite. I used it for old ladies when I worked at a grocery store too. My family didn't like it when we were just all together cause they said it sounded like baby talk, but loved it when I used it at church cause everyone would tell them how sweet and soft-spoken I was

My therapist said it actively made him feel uncomfortable when I used that voice. He couldn't quite put his finger on why it made him uncomfortable (other than him only knowing me on T) but he very much did not like it and he's so so right for that

#he's a cishet white jewish man so it's always a treat when I talk about something like this #cause it started off about how I felt like my gender is a performance and I will use it to my advantage #I usually talk fairly neutrally and monotone so people find it uncanny when I change it up #especially if it's the way I talk to my family and the church folks that ask about me #Now that I'm on T and had top surgery I love fucking with ppl via my gender presentation #I like the chaos of not correcting ppl and watching them fight amongst themselves over what my gender is #My previous gender was Weird Little Girl #and now i'm Just Some Guy #I don't feel like I was always a guy I feel like my gender at the time was Weird Little Girl #and it changed over time but I loved the performance of being a weird little girl #I was not a girl I was specifically a WLG #And well I still know how to use my old performances even if I'm no longer a weird little girl #I consider myself a guy but not a man and a girlie but not a woman #my gender is whatever is funniest at the moment #My gender is whatever you project onto me. My gender is a mirror to your childhood trauma #anyways I kinda lost the plot but yea I can kinda still use the fundie baby voice but it sounds a lil off #cause I've been on T for over 3 years now #ex christian #religious trauma

I'm not factoring in the ability to hit Jeff Blim's ungodly high notes, but acting wise, Zac is absolutely perfect. For Sargent MacNamara, we have Zac being amazing as the Skipper in A Starstruck Odessey, and the rest of the characters are weird little guys with something in their brains so... I won't say more so as to not spoil Starstruck but, those who know, know. Basically, make Zac Oyama all the weird little guys 2026.

Professor Hidgens/Hot Chocolate Boy: Keith Habersburger

a couple times when i taught first grade i used frog and toad to do a little mini-unit for a small group (of first graders who can more or less independently read frog and toad, which most can't for most of the year) about character, because frog and toad is great for that because the books are never like, "frog is cheerful and optimistic. toad is a loyal friend but very grumpy and gets upset easily," but the characters are so vividly drawn across the stories that the vibes really come across, so it's good training wheels for the concept of, "we can figure out what characters are like even if the author doesn't come right out and tell us." there's this one frog and toad story where frog wants to hang out, but toad doesn't because it's january, and he wants to sleep until spring, so he goes back to sleep and tells frog to wake him when its spring. so frog rips off the pages off his calendar until it says may and then wakes toad up and says "wake up! spring is here!" and and toad bounds out of bed all excited and the last page is the two of them contentedly heading out into the snow while the text says "and they went out to enjoy spring," or something like that. it's real cute.

anyway. so i did this story with a small group one year, and when we were discussing observations we could make about the characters that we could then turn into inferences about their traits, one of the things the kids decided was a takeaway re: frog here was: he's a bad friend. why? because!!!! he lied to toad!!!! you shouldn't lie to your friends!!! they were very offended on toad's behalf, that frog had taken his earnest request and used it to trick him. and, you know, i couldn't really argue with that. i could, and did, tell them that frog's behavior as a friend would be much more upstanding in upcoming stories, and that in this story he sure wanted to spend time with toad which is a good-friend thing to do, and i could and did attempt feebly to explain that i thought the author maybe was trying to be a little bit funny and show us that toad was being a little dramatic the whole time, but that type of sophistication was i found beyond even these slightly precocious first graders, for reasons less to do with reading comprehension and more to do with their general developmental capacity for complexity of thought and psychological reasoning. but, ultimately, if they decided in their personal value codes that lying to a friend for personal gain was really really bad and they would never consider someone who lied to them for personal gain to be a good friend, like, that's their right as readers. (i think eventually they landed on, frog is mostly a good friend but not always, which was about as much nuance as i could hope to squeeze from their tiny brains and left me satisfied. lol.)

but my point is: they knew that it was their right as readers. they felt no compunctions whatsoever about exercising their own moral judgement on the text, regardless of how unpunished frog's transgression remained. i didn't have to teach them that part.

#kids can definitely also be susceptible to the influence of fiction in questionable ways #but like sorry that comes down to parenting and is not the responsibility of authors / tv crreators / whatever outside of extremes #eg when i was a kid for a while i decided it would be funny to be mean to my little brother bc clarissa on tv was mean to her little brother #so my mom banned me from watching clarissa explains it all until i got my shit together #very simple solution A+ parenting move #being persistently unable to tell right from wrong or reality from fiction is a problem of parenting not of media exposure #and like i genuinely think that having these experiences where the lines get blurred & then reclarified is important developmentally #and to think otherwise is like. straight up fundie talk sorry #do we still say fundies? that feels very aughts internet to me
