2. Which language did you study the most this past year?

Probably Ukrainian!

3. Did you start studying any new languages this year?

This year I started studying Latin! I finally decided to get to it after reading a bilingual Virgil book, in Spanish and Latin. When i was 7 I was interested on Latin because I was into taxonomy, but I never got to learn it until this year!

15. What are you most proud of in your language learning journey this year?

I answered this question already, but another thing that makes me proud is the fact that now when I come across religious texts in Latin I try to understand them, and most of the time I manage to make sense of them!

currently reading: the High Society script, learning the order of scenes and songs for quick changes

currently watching: nothing really, I've been spending my evenings doing alterations. But at work I've found a guy on YouTube who reads vintage ghost stories and they're bloody excellent: he has the perfect voice for saying things like "mezzotint" and "antiquarian" and "why, that is most curious". Would highly recommend if you like a bit of cosy spookiness.

currently consuming: sad supermarket sandwich and carton of iced coffee

currently craving: half an hour ago I would have said sleep, but I don't know if it is sleep so much as refreshing rest. We start tech on Monday and it's going to be a shitter because they haven't left enough time between entrances and exits for changing lol

Currently watching: I've been watching the latest season of The Righteous Gemstones, which continues to be very funny and demented in all the right ways. It also has a surprising amount of emotion and heart for a show that's so aggressively vulgar.

Currently reading: The King's Pleasure by Alison Weir. It's the culmination of her Six Tudor Queens series, told from Henry VIII's perspective. It's pretty good, though I don't know if the characterization is entirely working for me.

Current obsession: Most of my attention is being occupied by the Good Omens season 2 release at the end of the week (what can I say, sometimes I like basic things). I have an entire watch plan lol.

Last song: I listened to about half of Britney Spears’s new song and turned it off about halfway through.

Currently watching: Women’s World Cup! I’m rewatching Parks and Rec because I wanted some easy background noise. Other than that I’m still watching Love Island every night and it’s that boring home stretch where they all start hating each other and you just want it to be over but you’re still compelled to watch it every night.

Currently reading: Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers, which I’m loving but  taking much longer to read than I usually would. I find that if I’m writing or working through a show then reading tends to suffer.

Current obsession: Decorating my bathroom. Last weekend we wallpapered and painted, this weekend we’re fitting a new bathroom floor. b&q youtube videos make me feel convinced I could do any job around my flat. other than that it’s my small patch of garden. the wild flowers are wild and flowering and my plants in pots are being attacked by slugs.

Kohler’s Pig – Michael Sowa, 1995. It looks like one of those sultry, sticky summer days when you can tell a storm is brewing and you simply cannot get comfortable. The water looks deliciously cool and inviting. The darkness of the pond contrasting with the bright diver. The anticipated delight, as the little pig is just about to make a big splash. And in the back of my mind, there’s that old wives’ tale that pigs can’t swim because with their sharp trotters, they would cut their throats. I do see this as a joyful image, but I like that ambivalence too.

A Dark Pool – Laura Knight, 1914. That almost lilac-coloured sea contrasted with the punchy orange of the figure. The way the breeze moves her dress. The way she stands there with such calm dignity, meditative, like a Greek statue. This one is also a mix of joy and sadness – this pool isn’t particularly dark, but there was sadness in Knight’s life at the time. She and her husband had been happy living in Cornwall, ‘a carefree life of sunlit pleasure’, entertaining friends and feeling inspired to paint. But in 1914, Knight’s friend Florence died by suicide, and for the world, WW1 was on the horizon. This painting is a snapshot of a moment of beauty during a tumultuous time.

Surprised! – Henri Rousseau, 1891. This is one of those paintings that comes alive in the gallery, a photo can’t really represent the way he rendered the rain with thin streaks of varnish. You can just feel the whooshing of the wind with those bending, outsized leaves. It’s almost like there’s a spotlight on the tiger, it’s lit up by that distant crack of lightning. I like the way the tiger isn’t naturalistic, but more like a motif from classical Indian art. It makes it seem like an exciting scene from a storybook. Rousseau created his wild pictures based on nature he saw in parks or zoos, or read about in books, giving them this surreal, imaginary quality.

Uprisings – Kozyndan (Kozue and Dan Kitchens), 2002. This is just such a charming take on Hokusai’s Great Wave. A cheeky, playful conversation between east and west, between the iconic work and a contemporary spin on it. In the original there’s that towering wave poised to come crashing down, and here it’s all wriggling and tumbling bunnies. This is part of a series called Seasons of the Bunny which all riff on well-known ukiyo-e woodblocks. Bunnies are multiplying as seafoam in this one – in the others, they become blossom or falling leaves or snowdrifts. More like fairies or shinto spirits than actual rabbits. Where the Hokusai is roiling and dramatic, this has a certain dreamy tranquility.

The Dress-Lamp Tree – Tim Walker, 2002. Walker mostly does fashion and celebrity photography for magazines like Vogue, but this one – without any models in it – really encapsulates what’s magical about all his work. It’s whimsical and pretty and strange and dreamlike and theatrical. His photographs often have a sense of decay or ageing, of time passing. There was a breeze in the air that night, and Walker had to shoot with a long exposure because of the very low light. It was extremely difficult to get a shot where the dresses weren’t blurry. So this picture is a fleeting instant of perfection.

Do you prefer forests, sea shores, or meadows: Forests, just for the sounds of the wildlife.

Are you an organised person, generally? You would think that I would be considering my career choice, (Accountant) which usually relies on being well organised and the like. But I am not. My style of organisation is haphazard to say the least, there are days were I am organised, and days where there is absolutely no chance of it happening.

What makes you feel better on a gloomy day: I think a long hot shower helps to soothe the soul. Just standing there whilst the hot water cascades over me and tries to wash away whatever was wrong. Plus at this current stage of my life, the Six Idiots (one Idiot in particular but I don’t need to name names, do I?) also help cheer me up when I’m feeling like crap.

im always craving literally just more physical affection between them all. If anyone gave someone else a hug I think I'd cry.

40. If you could do some kind of historical swap (i.e. place a ghost in a different period from their own), who would you choose and what period are they from now?

I might be misinterpreting but I would kill to see Ben Willbond play the Captain if he was from the 80s, I just think it would be so funny.

Lmao honestly I think they both work well together as leaders!! Neither manages very well on their own. They need joint good leadership to herd those cats.

37. What do you think the Captain was like when they were alive? Do you think they were exactly the same as they are now, or do you think there were any major or minor differences?

Basically yes, I think the Captain was very similar in life as he is in death. We can kind of tell that from 2.03, you know? I do like to think he unknowingly says more of his thoughts about handsome men aloud as a ghost because there's never any consequences when he does but I do think he's basically just as repressed, bless him.
