SO about the new pokemon... i really want to talk about this guy, as well as the animal(s) it’s based off of!
Tumblr media
some notable features, of course, are that Grafaifai looks extremely close to some type of lemur (big eyes, ears, primate-like build and ringed tail); but it actually seems to be a combination of a few. appearance-wise, however, it’s pretty much directly based off of the Aye-aye, which looks like this!!
Tumblr media
they’re really strange little guys! note the long middle finger (and yeah thats a. really fucking funny convenient finger to be the long one), which Grafaifai also has. at least we can say nintendo was really true to its source material on this..... in real life, though, aye-ayes use these to help them forage for food, mostly while picking in trees and reaching hard-to-get places. it’s not pictured here but they also have similar looking teeth, i wanna say... aalmost like that of a beaver’s? that aside, aye-ayes are actually sadly endangered; due to habitat loss and a sad myth, many of their numbers are going down in their home, madagascar. the aye-aye is a bit unnatural looking, from head to toe, yea, but its appearance is solely one that evolved over time to help it survive (i actually think they’re cute!). unfortunately, in its home land, many people believe this animal to be evil or a bad omen of some kind. this myth has led to a decrease in their population- however, researchers and biologists are doing all they can to help recover this amazing species. for the reason that they aren’t generally known of here, not to mention they already have a bad rep, i was REALLY delighted to see Grafaifai take inspiration from an aye-aye
still, aye-ayes aren’t the only primates Grafaifai seems to be based off of. i’d like to talk about some of those as well!! when i first saw it, i was already excited considering it had the resemblance of a lemur, but even more so when i looked at it closer and read its description:
Grafaifai is nocturnal. Once the sun sets, it licks its hands and fingers to cover them in poison, then uses them to draw patterns on the trees in its territory. The poisonous saliva it uses to paint paralyzes Bug Pokemon, which are drawn to the saliva's sweet, fragant scent. When dawn draws near, Grafaifai goes to collect any incapacitated prey.
aye-ayes, of course, don’t actually have any functions that allow them to create poison of any kind. they do mark their territory, but this particular feature seems to draw inspiration from another primate- the slow loris!
Tumblr media
alright now i have a funny little something to say ok? ok. believe it or not THIS loris is the more dangerous of the two- they’re really cute.... sweet even... but in order to protect themselves, they have venomous saliva that they lick themselves with and use in their deadly bite. yes these guys can actually kill people contrary to aye-ayes (i really like that Grafaifai’s other description box notes that its poison will “immobilize a victim for three whole days”). sadly, many species of slow loris are ALSO endangered, either being sought after for their venom or being kept as pets. if you’ve seen videos of these guys being “played” with or snuggled and it isn’t from a zoo or rescue center, it’s most likely harmful to them... scientists are also doing their very best to save lorisidae too, though!
it’s possible Grafaifai also draws inspiration from bush babies, another type of lemur (and my favorite animal) based on some of its appearance and the whole territory thing- but i think the main two have to be the aye-aye and slow loris!! little me would’ve been THRILLED to see this pokemon so honestly i think this is bringin me back into it. and if you’ve read this far thanks!! i love talking about these incredible primates & i really hope to bring more awareness to them!

Zookeeper - part 6
prev - next
“Hey, Layna!”
“Hi, Evelyn.”
Ooh, a proper response! She must be in a good mood today. Too bad I was just about to tell her something that was going to ruin it.
“What kind of stuff did you bring?” She asked hopefully, stepping away from her sketchbook and walking over to the glass, pressing her hands against it as she looked up at me hopefully.
I grimaced. “I’m really, really sorry, but management told me I wasn’t allowed to bring you any clothes. Apparently because we’re so close to the university, they want to keep everything in here fully in-view in case any bio students want to come by for projects. I guess one of the professors really encourages alumni to check out the zoo and some of them write papers on anatomy or something?”
Layna’s hopeful twinkle in her pitch-black eyes faded, and she immediately turned to head back to her bed. “Right. Of course. Gotta keep the specimens unobstructed for studying.”
“I’m sorry, Layna,” I said again.
“Why? It’s not like it’s your fault.”
We stayed silent for a few moments longer while I worked on maintenance. Layna went back to drawing.
“Do you know the etymology of my species’ name?” Layna suddenly asked.
I paused, surprised at the question. Not because I didn’t know the answer, but because I did.
“Funny you should ask that,” I said with a smile. “I actually looked it up last night, ‘cus I got curious, too. Apparently, when you were first discovered, people just kinda called you ‘tiny people,’ and because people are lazy, that eventually got shortened to ‘tiny,’ used as a noun. The scientific community wanted you to have a different name, because calling you ‘tinies’ is stupid, and, I mean… your anatomy is pretty one-to-one with humans’, so the name they came up with was ‘homo sapiens parvus.’ In case you don’t know, the scientific name for humans is ‘homo sapiens sapiens,’ and ‘parvus’ is Latin for, uh, ‘small.’ Your species’ scientific name is something else now, since you’re not actually an evolutionary offshoot of humans. You’re a very strange branch of the lorisidae family, in fact. Anyways, I don’t know where the ‘innet’ came from, but ‘parv’ comes from that initial ‘parvus’ from your older, more inaccurate scientific name.”
Layna blinked.
“…Sounds like someone was bored last night,” she muttered as she went back to drawing. “And, uh, apparently thinking a lot about me.”
…Why was that a little bit embarrassing?
“I… o-our conversations have, uh… been on my mind,” I admitted. “I feel weird about everything. I don’t know why.”
“Don’t worry, I know why,” Layna interjected.
I cocked an eyebrow as I dumped her cage’s septic tank into the waste bin before sealing it back up. “Oh do you now?”
She nodded. “You’re conflicted because you realized that the meaning of ‘sapience’ is a lot more blurry than you initially thought,” she muttered, sketching another few lines and stepping back for a better view of the page. “You used to think the word only applied to humanity. You saw intellect in other creatures, sure, but in your mind they were still beneath you. Now you realize that things aren’t that black and white. You realize that I possess awareness of the self.”
Ste moved back towards her drawing, casually sketching out another few lines. “You probably used to use, like, chimps who know sign language as a benchmark for my level of awareness, but now you realize that I’m a lot more comparable to you than I am to an ape. You’ve seen me make connections and judgements with sound reasoning, and you’ve seen a level of emotional nuance within me that rivals your own. But!” She said with a flair as she flicked her pencil lead in a bold stroke before standing up and tilting her head to the side, checking her picture from a different angle. “If that were all really true—that I’m self-aware and intelligent and possess the same capacity for emotions that you do, I mean—then that would mean that it’s really fucked up that I’m here on display, forced to pose for the cameras with my titties and my coochie out in full view. Which, by the way, it is.”
She frowned at the page in front of her, tilting her head the other direction. “But if that were true, then it would mean that you, as my warden, are a part of the problem. It would mean that you’re partly responsible for my situation, and that makes you uncomfortable and probably more than a little guilty, so you’re bottling those feelings up and not really thinking about them all that much. They manifest in the form of little gifts and concessions that you know aren’t really enough to make what I’m going through okay, but you don’t know what else to do. This situation is distressing for you, so you’re compartmentalizing and not thinking about it, hence your vague language—saying you ‘feeling weird about everything’ rather than anything more concise. Also, can you come over here for a sec? I need a reference for the folds in the human ear, I think mine are a little fucked up.”
…Uh.
Christ.
I wordlessly made my way over and knelt down, ear next to the glass.
“Uhhh… oh! That’s… yep, there we go.” She moved back to her paper and reshaped one of the lines.
Layna could not have been more right. I realized that I saw her as one of my peers, and I had been repressing it because… well. I was currently getting paid to clean out her piss and shit from a tank while I talked to her through a glass wall. I was about to feed her to prepare her to be a live specimen at a fucking zoo.
She’s… she’s an artist. She’s smart. She’s not only capable of psychoanalyzing me, she’s fucking good at it.
And I get paid to keep her trapped in a terrarium.
“…Layna…”
I didn’t really know what else to add.
“It’s alright,” she offered. “Take it in. Process it. I’ve been here three years, I’m used to it by now. Just, uhm…” Her head lowered just the tiniest bit. Her shoulders hunched up, a movement so small it was barely perceptible. The air of nonchalance and hollow irony in her voice dissipated ever so slightly. “…Promise that you will think about it? For as long as you want, and take your time, but…” She trailed off.
I let out an exhale. “I… even if I didn’t want to, I wouldn’t be able to,” I breathed. How could I ever hope to just… not think about this?
I tried to lose myself in my work. Layna kept drawing, not prompting me anymore about… about her situation. I finished up and started packing everything for the end of my shift. I paused before I left.
“I, uh… I’m sorry, Layna,” I said meekly.
I couldn’t bring myself to look at her, but I could hear the soft smile in her voice. “Being sorry is the only thing I need from you to forgive you. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
I paused a moment longer.
“See you tomorrow,” I replied before heading back home.

Take a night walk @ Rweteera Safari Park camp at Kibale forest in Uganda and look out for the nocturnal animals like Galago, Bush babies etc. Galagos, also known as bush babies, or nagapies, are small nocturnal primates native to continental, sub-Sahara Africa, and make up the family Galagidae. They are considered a sister group of the Lorisidae. According to some accounts, the name "bush baby" comes from either the animal's cries or its appearance.  Book your stay at Rweteera Safari Park via WhatsApp +256776862153 #visituganda🇺🇬 #rweteerasafaripark #africanrivercamps #rivercampsuganda #bushbabies (at Rweteera Safari Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaK3cLCLiyR/?utm_medium=tumblr

Slow Loris
It is so cute
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taxonomy
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates
Family: Lorisidae
Genus: Nycticebus
Scientific name: Nycticebus
Diet
The slow loris like to do all its eating at night. They also like to eat and hunt on their own. These animals are omnivorous, eating many different types of plant and animal material. Fruits and gums make up more than 50% of the diet. They use their sense to find their food in the dark, alot like me when i want a midnight snack
Tumblr media
They are also known to eat other small animals.
Reproduction
Slow lorises breed every 12 to 18 months, at a time of year when seasonal food levels are rising to a maximum. Birth often occurs in the animals’ nest, but may occasionally take place in the open. Infants are always parked or left in the nest while the mother forages.Newborn infants have grey bodies and silvery-white hands with long glistening fur that disappears at 11 weeks.
Behaviour
They are nocturnal and not widely distributed throughout their range, the social behavior of slow lorises has historically been difficult to study. The slow loris is considered to be a solitary species, although family groups have occasionally been found together. Lorises communicate with each other by urine-marking, a process in which they urinate on their hands and then wipe them on branches.
Hold on
Tumblr media
They urinate on they hands and put it on branches to communicate with each other that is wired, but hey they are animals. But Don’t do that we are humans.
HABITAT
Slow lorises occupy a wide range across southern Asia and western Indonesia, including parts of India, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia. They are generally found high in the trees in tropical rainforests, preferring warm, lowland areas below 1300 meters in elevation. They face stiff competition from arboreal monkeys in areas where the two overlap. Slow lorises are threatened by hunters, who prize them for their fur and for use in traditional medicine.

Golden angwantibo (Arctocebus aureus)
The golden angwantibo is a small, nocturnal primate. It has no tail, and, instead, its extremely powerful grip, made possible by a specialised arrangement of blood vessels in the wrists and ankles, aids it in moving securely through the trees. In common with other Loridae, the golden angwantibo has nails on all digits except for the second digit of each foot, which possesses a ‘toilet claw’, used in grooming. Interestingly, the index finger is reduced to a mere stub.
Classification Animalia - Chordata - Mammalia - Eutheria - Boreoeutheria - Euarchontoglires - Primatomorpha - Primates - Strepsirrhini - Lemuriformes - Lorisoidea - Lorisidae - Perodicticinae - Arctocebus - A. aureus

Galago
Galago is a small primate from a family of Lorisidae coming from a rain forest of Africa. The living animal, Galago, are staying in the trees and active to find meals at the night. The preys are insects, small birds, and fruits.
The size of this animal is similar to the squirrel. Because it catches preys, it has a great night vision. Galago is famous for being a professional jumper. It is able to reach 2 meters from the branch to the branch easily.

The Calabar angwantibo ( Arctocebus calabarensis ) spotted at the Cross River National Park in Nigeria. (x) Also known as the Calabar potto, it is a strepsirrhine primate of the family Lorisidae and shares the genus Arctocebus with the golden angwantibo (Arctocebus aureus). The prosimian lives in the rain forests of west Africa, particularly in tree-fall zones in areas where the forest has been cleared but has been known to live on farmland as well. Its range covers  Cameroon, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. The species takes its name from the Nigerian city of Calabar.
The Calabar angwantibo weighs between 266 and 465 grams. It has orangish-yellow fur on its back, grey or white fur on its belly, and a distinctive white line on its forehead and nose. Like other lorids, this angwantibo has a very short index finger, which allows it to get a strong grip on tree branches. The second toe on each foot has a specialised claw that it uses for grooming. This species is the only primate to have a functioning nictitating membrane (third eyelid)
It is nocturnal and arboreal. It stays considerably lower in the trees than the other nocturnal strepsirrhines in its range, and is typically found between 5 and 15 metres above ground. It moves by climbing very slowly through the trees, always grasping branches with at least three of its limbs at a time. During the day the angwantibo sleeps under dense foliage, hanging from a branch.
Its diet consists mainly of insects, especially caterpillars, but also some fruit. It will eat strong-smelling insects that other animals reject. Before eating a caterpillar, the angwantibo wipes it carefully with its hands to remove any poisonous barbs.
When confronted by a predator, the animal will roll up into a ball, but keep its mouth open beneath its armpit. If the attacker persists, the angwantibo will bite it and not let go
It forages for food alone, but each male's territory overlaps that of several females. Angwantibos reinforce social bonds through mutual grooming and scent-marking. Mating takes place only in the final phase of the female's estrous cycle, and is performed hanging upside-down from a branch. The female gives birth to a single infant after a gestation period of 131 to 136 days; the young are normally born between January and April. Infants are born with their eyes open and can cling to their mother's fur right away. (x)
