--------------------------------------------------
Waking up in a place where she didn’t fall asleep was disorienting, to say the least. Rubbing her eyes Y/n gazed around hazily, recognising the interior of a car. She was slumped upright in the backseat, just tall enough for her eyes to peek out the window. They weren’t moving, having stopped in what looked like an indoor parking area.
The space was large, scattered cars also parked and empty. Concrete pillars thick in their support. Dim orange lights were on, one blinking in the far corner of the car park. It was only when Y/n turned back to face forward did she realize a man was sitting in the driver's seat. He seemed to be waiting for something, was he the one that woke her up?
A better question Y/n thought was where was she? How did she get here? And where was her mother?
A few seconds was only needed to remember what had happened. They were more like flashes, pictures, if anything. But she remembered entering that game with her mother. A few other people were there but their faces were blurry. The only person she really remembered was the guy in the front seat, was that because she was looking at him?
Rubbing at her eyes again she looked to the other seats. They were empty, so where was her mother?
“Are you awake now?” The guy in front of her spoke. Oh, she remembered his name now. Chishiya, she was pretty sure. She nodded in reply, attempting one more time to rub at her eyes. The bleariness was beginning to annoy her. He sighed, moving towards his door and exiting the car.
Y/n perked up a bit at this. Were they going somewhere again? She briefly remembered him carrying her. It seemed the more she was waking up the more she was remembering. Chishiya shut his door before rounding on hers, opening it for her and crouching down. “Are you able to walk this time?”
She nodded somewhat reluctantly. Her legs and arms felt heavy, as if they were being pulled down with weights. Her cheeks felt stiff and her eyes were sore, her throat was dry and her lungs ached. Y/n still felt like she could walk, albeit slowly.
Chishiya stared at her for a few more seconds before stretching forward and unclipping her seatbelt. Reaching under her arms he hoisted her out of the car, letting her feet touch the ground before letting go of her.
“Let’s go. We need to get you registered.” An uncertain tilt in his low voice. He started walking until Y/n stepped forward, reaching up and holding onto his hand. Chishiya paused, looking down at the young girl. Her weary face peering back up at him. He felt uncomfortable, not just from her but from the entire situation. A child having to go through these games, even he was repulsed by it. It was hard enough for the adults of the borderlands to process what was going on and continue functioning with the knowledge. Let alone a, what, 8 or 9 year old girl.
Resigning to the fact he’d be holding her hand for the remainder of their walk, he began moving. Her quick pitter-patter footsteps echoed alongside Chishiya’s as they made their way to a door in the far corner of the car park. The closer they got, Y/n could hear loud chattering and footfalls, she even heard music in the distance. It reminded her of the little class parties she’d attend at school.
The promise of a large crowd behind the door they were now a few steps away from was enough to scare her into reaching her other hand up, grasping onto the ends of Chishiyas grey hoodie. He briefly cast a glance towards her before looking away, reaching his hand out to open the door, making their way into the large room.
Y/n couldn’t see much from where they were. After coming through the car park door they were standing in a short hallway, ending only a few feet ahead with a huge pillar in the way. When they walked forward Y/n could see there was a thin strip of walkway between the rest of the pillars to the left and right of her. Where the large stones didn’t reach it expanded into a further open space, branching off into where Y/n couldn’t see.
They continued walking into the opened room, a massive open space occupied by a few groups of people. The pillars followed the room round in a square, reaching up high to two other floors. Both of them had railings made out of the same material. The second floor had an overhanging balcony attached, looking over the entire room. Four golden chandeliers hung above their heads.
It was only now Y/n realized the chandeliers were on and the room was bathed in a soft glow. She also realized they were heading to the biggest group set up on one side of the room, in between two of those pillars. After stopping behind a few of the people Chishiya spoke out, “Excuse me, can we get through?”. Some of them turned to look back at us before moving out of the way, splitting off so we could walk between them.
I felt their stares before I heard them start whispering, some exclaiming louder than they probably intended.
“Is that a child?..”
“In the borderlands too, how are they alive?”
“The poor baby…”
“Just look at her.”
Y/n didn’t know what to do. Not liking this attention on her one bit. They all kept glancing back at her, pitying stares boring into her back. Hands over their mouths, gaping as they observed the small child amongst them.
Chishiya sighed heavily, one of great annoyance, muttering something Y/n couldn’t make out.
They stopped in front of a large oak table, two people in chairs on the other side. Paper and folders were scattered across the surface, a few pens laying off to one side and a basket that looked to be holding various cards. Y/n had scarcely observed the gun laying in front of one of the two people sitting there before Chishiya spoke, “The seven of diamonds, from group 4. I was the only one to make it back.”
His tone was bordering on irritation, most likely bothered about the attention he was now getting as well with a child attached to him. “Is that a child? Is she supposed to be a new recruit or something?” One of the people sitting at the table muttered aloud in disbelief. The other shaking his head and scoffing before marking something down.
Chishiya deposited the card into the basket with the others, pulling her along a little faster than her average speed in an effort to get away from the gaggle of people as soon as possible. The smallest amount of relief filled Y/n as more people were seen to be exiting from the same garage door they’d used. Most cheering and waving about, some quiet and introverted.
“Calm down. You're going to throw yourself into a panic attack again if you keep that up.” Chishiya said, Y/n now realizing her chest was stuttering, breaths coming out in short quick puffs. Her grip on his hand had grown rather tight, she noticed. Her hand in his jacket crinkled the material.
She shuffled closer to his side in an effort to conceal herself somewhat. Now becoming more aware of the few people that were loitering around and passing them by. The few that noticed her never coming up to her, Y/n was thankful for that at least.
Shifting her gaze downward she watched her feet move in quick succession alongside Chishiya. Trying to focus on the patterns that the carpet withheld in an effort to distract herself as the man beside her led them down a wide hallway.
The people that saw them on their way down the hall tended to pause in their step, if they weren’t already still,  gaping at them with wide mouths and unblinking eyes. If there were more than one person they’d end up whispering to each other, pointing, some were even clear in their pity.
They eventually made it to the end of the hallway, a corridor on either side that stretched on further, but they paused in front of two elevators. Clicking the button both of them waited until the door opened with a familiar ding.
Chishiya was thankful no one was inside and he was sure Y/n was as well. Given how she hadn’t looked up from the ground, or let her grasp falter even once the entire way, the people around had caught her attention too. He rested a gentle hand on top of her head after clicking the button, beginning their ascent.
Chishiya wasn’t sure why he did. Maybe it was for her. Clearly uncomfortable, holding tightly onto him, her only source of familiarity in her unknown environment. Perhaps he wanted to offer her some comfort, however little, away from prying eyes.
Or maybe it was for himself. Had her earlier breakdown startled him more than he thought? Seeing the child with their mother was disorientating at first. Has one ever been seen in the borderlands before? Not to anyone's knowledge at the beach, he was sure. Typically the age range never went below teenagers, the elderly were extremely rare as well.
Chishiya doesn’t think people in their eighties or nineties had been spotted before, not by him anyway. He supposes he’ll find out when they both get to the executive meeting room. In response to his gentle hand, Y/n shuffled closer. The warmth familiar to when her mother would comfort her in such a way.
Soon enough the doors opened, revealing a similar hallway then the one a few floors down, and Chishiya removed his hand. As they trudged their way along, the exhaustion started to catch up to the both of them. The time obvious in the pitch black sky reflected in a window back where they came, stars dotted above.
Y/n had slowly risen her head from its hunkered down position. The ache in her neck and the dwindled number of people easing her surroundings to be visible to her once more. And it was only as her head had risen she noticed there were hardly any people along this path anyway.
The further they walked the difference compared to the hallway downstairs began to get obvious. It was slightly smaller than the one downstairs. Wooden beams ran along the ceiling while a few paintings were seen hanging up on the walls. Y/n hadn’t any interest in art so she didn’t bother looking at them for a long period of time. Most of them were just flowers or people anyway. Some scenery could be seen as well.
The further they walked, the more windows that were on this floor as well. Along the walls and towards the end of the corridor they were nearing,  just before it turned left, were large frames and panels of glass. This time they were showcasing the moon, far in the sky.
Only noticing they had now stopped in front of two large wood doors, the pattern a simple repeating square raised onto the wood. Chishiya looked down at her and then at her hand still clasped in his. Her other hand no longer bunched in his jumper, instead fiddling anxiously with the trousers of her overalls.
He looked away, knocking on the heavy door. The dull thuds responded loudly in the empty hallway. Not waiting for a reply from whoever was inside, Chishiya pulled on one of the door handles. Opening the space up for both to see. Two tall windows were what greeted them on the opposite side of the room. Symmetrical in their square pane lining.
The windows followed down the length of the room. Each one was identical. Chandeliers were hanging from the ceiling as this room's source of light, also evenly placed. As they made their way further in the room a large oak table covered with a fancy table cloth was directly in the centre of the room. Wood chairs with cushions and a padded centre matched the table cloth design. Wooden panels lined the back of the room.
If anyone asked Y/n she’d say this looked like a meeting room. Big, bland, slightly intimidating and empty.
Empty except for a few people stood on the left side of the room, further towards the panels than the entrance. One was leaned up against the wall, another sitting down on the floor and the rest were standing around. It seemed like they were chatting amongst themselves, minus the one on the floor who looked like he’d been trying to nap.
The fleeting look Y/n managed before ducking her head again told her they were also wearing beach attire too. Although these people had shirts and vests on, some even had shoes as well. Y/n thought they looked similar to the three guys from her game earlier that night. She remembers little of them wearing beach shorts and sandals too.
And if remembering correctly, they also had guns on them. Her brief look to the people in the room didn’t manage to confirm whether they had weapons on them or not.
With Y/n’s head lowered, Chishiya began to speak, “I need one of you to call all the executives here for an emergency meeting. As you can see it’s rather important.” His tone bordered on annoyance.
All of them turned their heads, if they hadn’t when the door opened. A few possessed confused faces before noticing the child tucked into the side of Chishiya. The ones that had noticed her from the beginning instead had bewildered looks plastered on their faces.
All but two scrambled to move, Y/n assumed to carry out what Chishiya had ordered. The last two spoke amongst each other, nothing secret in their eyes as they darted between each other, Chishiya and to them, the random child.
Chishiya scoffed, a word Y/n wasn’t familiar with plaguing the sound. He tugged her forward, moving to the other side of the table from the two people. Standing in front of a window.
It didn’t take too long for the others to come back and following shortly after was a trickle of people making their way into the room. Each one was a different level of tired from the last.
The first person to enter the room was a large man, made mostly of muscle, that being clear in the tanked shirt he wore. He was rather tall, wearing camo patterned trousers with black boots, a shaved head to pair. He glanced briefly at Chishiya before seeing the child half hidden behind his leg. The only change in the man's flat expression was the furrowing of his brows taking hold for a few seconds before a grave expression replaced it. This one seems to stay.
The next person to walk in was another man. This one with a patterned button down shirt paired with plain swim shorts. His hair was fairly long, falling from the side of his face to the back of his neck in layers. Styled away from his face. Rectangle glasses were perched on his nose, a small scar on the top of his lip on one side of his face. The only reaction he gave to seeing the people in the room was a hand adjusting his glasses. A more pitiful expression compared to the previous man.
Two women came in next. One of them had long black hair with a fringe, two pieces to the side of her face cut at chin length. She wore a plain black top, stretching up to around her neck, the sleeves off the shoulder. She wore a swimsuit underneath, a loosely crocheted type skirt layered over the top, also appearing beach wear.
The other woman had shorter-than-shoulder length hair. Also black. She wore a button down sheer white shirt, lifted up and tied around her middle. Paired with black shorts and high heeled sandals.
The first woman took one look at the child before diverting her gaze. The second woman paused for a second. Gazing at the child before her, from what she could see of the child anyway. Before moving along and following the others who were now already sat at the table.
The next two that followed came one after the other. The first guy sauntered into the room. He was wearing a black and white patterned shirt with buttons paired with long black jeans and black shoes. His hair was longer than the previous guys. Reaching about shoulder length, the top half tied back into a small bun. He had two piercings visible, both on his face. On was a bar going through his eyebrow. The other a nose stud. Both simple in their silver design.
The person that followed a few steps behind was hunched over slightly, a curve to his spine. This one wore baggy black trousers that were rolled halfway up his calves. A black tank top shirt underneath a black hoodie. The sleeves appeared to be torn off and he was covered in tattoos. All over his face and arms. Black sandals matched with him.
Both of the men that just walked in were carrying weapons. The hunched man had a long sword, a katana, sheathed in its protective casing. It was strapped to his back. The piercing guy had a long black rifle swung over his shoulder rather carelessly. Held up by a singular hand.
Hunched guy took one look at Chishiya and the child before looking away. Not all that interested. Piercing guy took more notice. An intrigued sound left his throat. He walked a few steps closer before stopping and lowering down. Leaning forward in his crouched position he tilted his head. “That’s an actual child, huh?” He drew the words out before standing again, going over to the second to last chair available. Hunched guy standing over his chair instead of sitting, a hand over the back. “Ah, what a shame. Poor thing.” Y/n wasn’t able to tell if he was mocking her or actually sympathetic towards her.
Chishiya’s gaze narrowed slightly on the loud male, not quite enough for him to notice and make a fuss. But strong in Chishiya’s contempt for the man under his gaze. Y/n had shuffled even further behind Chishiya amid the arrival of the table of people. Legs and hands trembling slightly, partly in exhaustion and mostly in fear.
She still wouldn’t let go of his hand.
About a minute or so went by before the last person joined them. He walked in on sluggish feet, appearing either tipsy or just sleeping. His dark sunglasses covered his eyes but his sunken face highlighted his exhaustion. The most prominent in the room. He was dressed in swim shorts also, a reddish-orange colour.
He wore a long silk gown over the top of his bare chest. The colourful pattern was a stark contrast to everyone else's clothes. His hair was about shoulder length, also black, curling slightly at the ends. A ring snug on one of his fingers. He didn’t look over at them before sitting down in his chair.
He slumped backwards, an arm resting on the chair before lazily waving his hand about. “What is the meaning of this meeting, Chishiya?” He even spoke in an idle, drawn out way before glancing over to the man in question standing a few feet away from the table.
It was only then the colourful man noticed the small figure practically squished into Chishiyas side. Head bowed low and hand clutching his. Her shaking was obvious for all who looked upon her. The man's eyebrows raised in intrigue and question from underneath his sunglasses. He sat upright slightly, perking up at something new.
Chishiya took a step forward, practically dragging the child along with him. “In the game I had today, only me and the girl managed to clear it.” As Chishiya spoke he gained the attention of everyone sitting at the table. Each one curious in their own way. “Unfortunately, she has nowhere else to go.” He said, sighing part way through the sentence.
Colourful guy nodded slowly, taking in every word the blonde was saying. He began drumming his fingers on the table in front of him before speaking. “You think we should let her join?” Looking at Chishiya as he spoke, but welcoming answers from all.
The piercing guy spoke first. “She’s a child. What cards is she going to be able to get us?” Shifting in his seat slightly, tone bold.
The guy with the rectangle glasses spoke next. “Logically speaking, how is she going to be a good fit to the community?..” Finishing by pushing his glasses up and folding his hands in front of his face.
“Most people seem to love children. She could make them happier just by existing.” Chishiya spoke next. Followed by the short haired lady, “Isn’t this the first child that has been seen in the borderlands? We’ve had teenagers before, but never someone so young. I’d guess and say she’s ten years old.”
Colourful guy hummed. “She may not be able to get the cards herself. But she can be pretty useful in achieving them, in certain games perhaps.” He sighed heavily before taking off his sunglasses and facing the rest of the table. “But who would look after her? She is young, after all.”
“Are we actually going to let a child stay here? She’ll most likely be dead next game anyway.” Piercing guy said.
“And not even give her a chance? Just throw her out?” Long haired lady spoke up.
“Even if she did die in the next game, shouldn’t she be in comfort before then? I didn’t realize you cared so little.” This time the short haired lady spoke up.
Piercing guy scowled in return. Lowering his gaze to the table and back again, this time staying silent.
Colourful guy briefly looked around the table, making eye contact with every member present, then looked back at Chishiya and the child. He stood up, walking over towards them. He paused in his step when Y/n took notice of someone making their way towards her. A choked noise escaping her throat before almost fully hiding behind Chishiya now.
She was trembling all over, shaking in her little shoes she wore, grasping his hand as though it was her lifeline. Colourful guy lowered himself down, his hands out in front of him, a small smile tugging at his mouth. “Hey, it’s okay. See? Not going to hurt you.” He spoke somewhat slowly, not wanting to scare the child anymore.
“Would you like to stay here? Hm? We have warm beds and fresh food. Plenty of kind people to take care of you.” Y/n slowly looked up. Raising her head to finally look at him. His smile grew a small bit. “There we go. Now, can you tell us your name?” He tried.
Y/n helplessly looked at him before shuffling her feet slightly, moving to look up at Chishiya who was already looking down at her. Her eyes held no secret to the fear she felt. Water had collected in her bloodshot eyes, on the verge of tears.
He sighed before addressing the colourful man. “She hadn’t spoken a single word the entire game I had with her, not even to her mother.” The man hummed, a conflicting look passing over his face. The short haired lady took over and said, “Maybe it’s a medical thing. I could look her over later.”
Y/n seemed to retreat back into herself, or rather behind Chishiya, at that. Not very fond of the idea at all. Colourful guy smiled again, “No matter, I’m sure you’d love to stay here, it seems you’ve made a new friend already.” Glancing at Chishiya. “Let’s go over the rules then, hm?”
Chishiya raised his head slightly as the colourful guy stood up and began to make his way to the table. “Everyone sitting at this table, including Chishiya, are the executive members of the beach. Our system is created by numbers, you see these tags on our wrists?” He held out his hand to show. “Everyone at the beach has one. We determine how high of a number you get based on your skill and how many cards you have.”
Y/n had glanced back up at some point during him speaking. Only now noticing a tag around Chishiyas wrist too. “Now, the cards are important, you see. When we’ve managed to collect all the cards in a deck, one lucky person gets to go home!” Y/n’s eyes widened at the prospect of possibly going home. “That’s why the amount of cards you have and contribute determines how high of a number you get. The highest number gets all the cards first, any duplicates get passed down to the next numbers who don’t have them, and so on. That’s also why your number matters. The higher your number, the better chance you have of leaving quicker. Easy to understand, right?”
He didn’t bother waiting for a response from anyone, continuing in his spiel. “The executive members here all have some of the highest numbers on the beach. Let’s start off with me, seeing as I am number one. My name is Takeru Danma, but you may call me Hatter, everyone here does.”
He began going through the rest of the executive members. Chishiya Y/n already knew. Rectangle glasses guy got introduced as Kuzuryu. Camo guy is called Aguni. Piercing guy is called Niragi. Hunched guy is called ‘Last Boss’. Long haired lady is called Mira. Short haired lady is called An. The other people who were in the room weren’t introduced.
“Now, here at The Beach we only have three rules you’ll need to follow. Pretty simple, right?” Hatter seemed to get more serious here. “Rule number one, you must always wear a bathing suit at the beach. This is so no weapons can be hidden and people can remain safe.” He turned to look over at Aguni, Last Boss and Niragi.
“A select few people here can be chosen as Militants. These people are allowed weapons, as you can see. However, they also help to keep us safe.” He didn’t seem to linger too long on this topic. “Rule number two. You are free to live life exactly how you wish. So however you want to live it, as long as it isn’t breaking the rules, you are free to do so. And rule number three.”
Hatter seemed to pause for a second. Turning around he said, “This rule only applies to traitors. The traitors of The Beach are the ones who betray us. For example, hiding their cards, or trying to leave The Beach for good. However, I don’t think you’d betray us, huh?” He smiled down at her. Y/n felt on edge, he was starting to scare her and she didn’t like it, so she merely nodded.
Hatter relaxed at this. Smiling wide at her before speaking again. “The swimsuit rule, I suppose, won’t apply to you. I doubt someone so young as yourself should have any need to carry around a weapon. Let alone be able to get away with it.”
He clapped his hands, this appearing as some kind of sign for everyone to clear out, as people began to move from their chairs. “She’ll receive her tag sometime tomorrow. I assume she didn’t have any other cards with her?” He addressed Chishiya this time. “No. The card I got today was handed in as normal.” Hatter nodded at this.
Addressing Chishiya one last time. “It seems she has grown attached to you, Chishiya. I hope you take care of her well.” Chishiya stared at him for a few seconds before nodding once. Hatter nodded back, looking down at Y/n and smiling at her one last time before making his way out of the room.
She looked up at Chishiya as he gazed down at her. He sighed, before starting to walk. “Let’s go. You must be tired.” Y/n kept her head down, shuffling along next to him as they made their way out the doors and down the hallway back to the elevators.
When they stepped out of the elevator a floor down they walked along a few hallways. Making turns Y/n didn’t care to remember at the moment. Each hallway was lined with doors, as you’d find in a hotel.
Eventually they stopped in front of one door, Chishiya opening it and pulling both of them inside, closing the door behind them. Still holding onto his hand Chishiya tugged her along down the short hallway, past what she thinks was the bathroom door, into the big area of the actual room.
A large bed was against one of the walls, white linen sheets and fluffy pillows neatly set up on the bed. An oak wardrobe resided in a far corner next to a desk with two drawers. Different items were scattered on the surface. A two seater sofa and some chairs, all matching in pattern, were placed around a small sized coffee table as well. The window that was in the room was covered by the drawn curtains.
“This is my room. You’ll be staying here for tonight.” Chishiya spoke as he gently eased his hand out of her grip. She let him, albeit reluctantly, before using both hands to fiddle with the sides of her overalls. The leftover anxiety is still making her fidgety.
He rifled through his wardrobe, pulling out a plain shirt. “Here. You can sleep in this until you can find some new clothes. The bathroom is down there.” He pointed at where she originally assumed the bathroom was.
Y/n nodded, taking the shirt from him before shuffling her way into the bathroom. It was a nice clean white marble bathroom. It had a bath and a shower, a toilet, a sink, counters with cupboards and a large mirror above the sink. There was more stuff picked out over the bathroom counter. Y/n could make out a few things that probably didn’t belong in a bathroom.  Open wires and plugs being some of the few things she could see.
She wondered what Chishiya was making, at least, it appeared he was making something. Or at least attempting too. In the time it took Y/n to observe the bathroom she’d changed into her nightwear. The shirt Chishiya had lent to her reached past her knees, acting as more of a night gown. She folded up her clothes and used the bathroom, reaching up on her tiptoes to get to the soap.
When she came out of the bathroom, her neatly folded clothes were being carried in her arms. Chishiya looked over, nodding, “That’ll do. You can just leave them there. Get some sleep.” Placing the small pile on one of the chairs. She fidgeted in place for a second, her nerves getting to her. She wanted to ask him a few questions, before ultimately deciding she was too exhausted, and choosing to wait until the morning to ask him.
Climbing onto the bed and shifting to get under the covers Y/n looked over at Chishiya hunched over something at the desk. Deciding she felt safe enough with him, she closed her eyes. Wiggling into the softness of the duvet and pillows she felt exhaustion beginning to take over, falling into a dreamless sleep.

Trick or treat!
How about a behind the scenes for one of my fics?
In By the Pine Tree, Toph's sweater was inspired by one that a good friend of mine wore, Sokka's tacky suit was inspired by a suit my officiant/manager wore, and Katara's outfit is inspired by one I wore to a tacky Christmas sweater party in college. I didn't get a love confession that night, though I did end up being escorted home by pimp Santa (a guy in a Santa suit with a gold ho ho ho chain and a candy cane).

Love You to The Moon and Back // Chapter Four - Dreamless Sleeps
Tumblr media
Eventual Dad Chishiya with Mute Child Reader - Platonic Only
3.5k Words
Chapter Warnings - Nightmare. Crying :(
Chapter Summary - Haunting nightmares, warm meals and a smiling face.
Authors Note // Thank you all for being so patient :,) This chapter was really hard to write for some reason. It is mostly just a filler kind of chapter, another introduction and some pillars being built. I hope the next chapter is better, because I'm not too happy with this one. I wasn't feeling the best last week, so next to no writing was done, however, I've worked all day today to try and get a chapter out. Again, I hope the next chapter is a lot better :,) I hope you all enjoy nonetheless, let me know your thoughts, if I need to improve anything, likes, reblogs and comments are more than welcome. <33 And please let me know if it makes sense, my brain has turned to mush. :)
-----------------------------------
Y/n’s sleep wasn’t dreamless. In fact, it was filled with snippets from what appeared to be her last game. Specifically her mother. The details were vague, but the message came across clear as day for her. Something had happened to her mother. She’d died in that game and now Y/n was left all alone.
Y/n had awoken in a state of panic. The covers that had kept her warm and comforted now felt suffocating. They’d shifted up during her sleep, now covering her head. Hot stuffy air was all she was breathing in amidst her panic. She’d shuffled down slightly, no longer on the pillow that was dotted with wet splotches from where her head had been laying.
Seeming to wrestle with the sheets Y/n had gotten herself even more tangled in them. She began to kick her legs wildly, small gasps escaping her mouth. Y/n heard a door open in the distance before someone began making their way in quick strides to where she was tangled.
All it took was one tug from the undisclosed person to pull the blankets free. Once Y/n was released from her temporary prison she took in deep gasps of the cooled air. Her face was blessed with the cool air too, bringing notice to her damp cheeks. The man was now revealed to only be Chishiya who had come from the bathroom. His eyes looked weighed down, heavy in his effort to keep them open.
A frown was lining his face, brows slightly furrowed as well. Y/n probably would have said he looked annoyed, however in the moment her mind could only focus on one thing. As hiccups escaped from her and her eyes were blurred by tears her hand came up to sign ‘Mother’.
Chishiya looked on in confusion. He hadn’t learned sign language. He hadn’t needed to. However it certainly would have come in handy right now, since he couldn’t understand what she was trying to say.
Y/n repeated herself, signing the word for mother over and over again. When it became clear Chishiya had no idea what she was trying to say she gave up. Being reduced to nothing but tears, sobbing her heart out for someone that was no longer here.
Chishiya was stuck on what to do. He’s never been in this situation before. And he had no idea on how to comfort the grieving child. Chishiya’s become used to discarding people, not paying any attention to how they were feeling and not caring to either. He’s grown comfortable with this, especially since coming to the borderlands.
However, looking down at the crying child who had just woken up from a nightmare by what he was now seeing and had heard, he couldn’t deny. Something tugged on his heartstrings. Just a little.
It was something so small it was barely there, hardly felt. And yet, Chishiya still reached out, resting a gentle hand atop the child's head. Small pats administered in his effort to calm her.
Y/n paused momentarily in her distress, brief shock passing over her. Small hiccups and tears were still escaping her. And even though Chishiya had no resemblance to her mother whatsoever, she still felt a similar comfort in the action.
She had decided. Y/n sat up quickly, Chishiya being close enough for her to grasp onto his jacket and wrap her arms as tight around him as she could manage.
Chishiya froze at that moment. His arms were left hanging oddly at his sides. Contact of any kind was something he was largely uncomfortable with. Yet although reluctant, he slowly wrapped his arms around her. One hand across her back and the other resuming the gentle pats to her head.
Over the course of a few minutes Y/n had been reduced to sniffles. Her body was too exhausted over the recent events to produce any more tears. She must not have been asleep for very long.
Chishiya decided now was a good time to pull away, since she had calmed down significantly compared to a few minutes ago. But the second Y/n felt him trying to leave she only clasped on tighter, hiccups increasing and her glossy eyes were signs to oncoming tears.
He paused, now not knowing what to do since apparently he wasn’t allowed to leave. However, he needed to continue with the weapon he was working on. It was the second version of the first weapon he’d made with this idea in mind. The first one failed to work properly, melting parts of it in the process. So now he had to scavenge other parts to hopefully make a successful one this time.
He sighed something heavy. He didn’t have time to deal with a crying child at the moment. So now Chishiya decided. Tucking his hands under her arms he lifted her up, carrying her over to where he was working. It was obvious she wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep alone due to her nightmare and now she wouldn’t let him leave her by herself. Regardless of him being only several feet from her.
He placed her down on the soft cushioned chair next to the desk, crouching slightly so she could release her arms from around his neck. As soon as she let go and he made to stand up she reached out with her hands and grabbed onto his hoodie, holding it gently but firmly, to make sure he didn’t just leave her.
He peered down at her, an irritated furrow to his brows. He was about to say something in response, his mouth had opened slightly to speak before he thought better of it. Merely getting started on his creation.
About ten or so minutes had passed. Chishiya was fully focused on the construction of the unauthorized weapon. Y/n comfortably sitting, watching in slight awe and intrigue at what he was doing. Her small hands were still holding onto his jacket, slackened now with the reassurance that he wasn’t disappearing anytime soon.
Gently tugging on his jacket to get his attention, Chishiya looked down to her in question. She pointed to the shirt she still wore for sleeping before looking back up at him. “You want to change?” Receiving a nod in reply he said, “Your clothes are on the chair over there, you can change in the bathroom again.”
Nodding again in acknowledgement, she gently scooted herself off of the chair, feet padding along to the bathroom. After using the toilet and washing her hands she dressed herself in her previous clothes. A basic long sleeved t-shirt with black overalls. Little polka dot socks on her feet. She put her shoes on as well, only a pair of trainers.
After hurrying out of the bathroom Y/n sat back in the chair, reaching up to gently hold his hoodie again. Another few minutes passed, Y/n back to watching what Chishiya was doing.
A few sturdy knocks broke through the peaceful quiet the two were existing in. Chishiya paused, tensing slightly with the sudden intrusion. The possibility of who could be behind the door alerting him. Y/n had startled in return, going back to tightened knuckles bundled up in the white hoodie.
“Hey! Chishiya, are you in there? It’s Kuina!” A voice had called out, following not far behind it was more knocking.
The man in question relaxed slightly, calling back after glancing down to Y/n. “Yeah, it’s open.”
Y/n could hear the door swing open followed by footsteps before a woman appeared in her view. She was rather tall, taller than Chishiya by at least half a head. Most likely aided by the heeled sandals she wore on her feet. A bright blue two piece swimming suit patterned with what looked like leaves in the colour white was adorned on her slim figure. Y/n thinks she was wearing two different styled bracelets on one wrist, the other was claimed by the beach's number tag.
A necklace was clasped around her neck, long dreads tied up high framed around her face. Light makeup was dusted across her cheeks and eyes. And what appeared to Y/n as a long stick was poking out from between her lips. The woman Y/n remembered as Kuina looked to be chewing on it unconsciously.
Kuina paused in her stride towards Chishiya, noticing rather quickly the smaller companion he now has with him. “Is that a child?” Her eyes were wide in exasperation. Hand coming up to take out the long stick, leaving her mouth agape in shock.
Chishiya had gone back to fiddling with the items at his desk before humming, responding after a breath, “She was in the game that I played last night. We were the only ones to have completed it.”
Kuina made a wounded noise in response, sympathy clear in her gaze while looking at the young girl. “She was all alone in a game? I can’t imagine being so young…” Her words trailed off. Either unsure of what she was going to say or not knowing how to complete it herself.
“She wasn’t alone.”
“Huh?” Now her expression portrayed confusion, turning her face to look at Chishiya. “Then how?-” He cut her question off with a call of her name.
“Kuina.” Pausing what he was doing, Chishiya turned to look down at the child now perched calmly on the chair. More relaxed after seeing their exchange. Her eyes were bloodshot still, a small frown lining her face.
Luckily Kuina seemed to understand what Chishiya was trying to say. As her sharp nod was all she gave in reply, brows slightly furrowed. Her gaze returned to the girl before she crouched down.
“Hey.” A gentle smile graced her face. “You probably heard, but I'm Kuina. What's your name?” It was silent for a few seconds. Y/n turning to look up at Chishiya before going back to Kuina, her eyes big.
He stepped in, “Her name is Y/n. She hasn’t spoken, not even in the game. She’s only communicated before with writing and brief sign language. I suspect she’s most likely mute.”
Y/n had started fiddling with Chishiya’s hoodie, shifting slightly on the seat, nerves beginning to get to her. Kuina only smiled in response to his words. Nodding again. “Well, It’s good I know a bit of sign language then!”
Chishiya’s brows furrowed slightly, “You do?”
She nods while humming, “I started learning some just in case I needed it to help my mother.”
At the mention of the word ‘mother’, Y/n’s eyes started to well up, lower lip beginning to quiver. A startled expression overcame Kuina’s face before exclaiming rapidly, “Oh no, it’s okay! Hey, I'm sorry,” She glanced at Chishiya, “I didn’t mean to.” Her eyebrows were now upturned in her worry.
Slow droplets began to trickle down Y/n’s cheeks, one of her hands coming up in the form of a fist to rub at her eyes. Gentle hiccups starting to bubble up in her chest. Chishiya and Kuina shared a look before she came forward. Hands came to gently pick the weeping child up, moving her so Kuina could sit in her place, bringing her back down on her lap.
Her small fist was still clenched in Chishiyas jacket, pausing briefly in the rubbing of her eye before leaning forward. Her arm went around Kuina's shoulder, resting her head on the other side. Small shushing and cooing sounds could be heard over the occasional hiccup. A hand had come up to rub at her back, the other cradling her head, much like her mother used to do when she was younger.
Eventually, exhaustion began to weigh down on her eyes again. Kuina began to rock her gently side to side. The soothing motion lulled her to pitiful sleep.
When Y/n began to wake up she was still nestled in Kuina’s hold. Tender brushes to the ends of her hair. They were both talking in hushed voices, trying to keep quiet to let her get as much rest as she needed.
Cracking her eyes open, the first person to notice she was awake was Chishiya. After catching her eye he lifted his hand in a small wave. In return she lifted her hand, now detached from his hoodie, and waved back. A small twitch to his lips with a little smile was her response.
“Is the little flower awake now?” Kuina spoke up. A tiny yawn escaped Y/n before nodding her head in response, trying as best as she could to snuggle back into Kuinas shoulder. A light laugh was heard. “Don’t you want to get some breakfast? You must be hungry right?”
At this the girl perked up, lifting her head from its perch. A bright grin was visible on Kuinas face, “Alright then! Let’s go get some breakfast!” Shuffling down from her lap Y/n stretched out her arms, rubbing the side of her arm over her eyes to help wake herself up a bit more.
Kuina had gotten up from behind her, stretching as well before starting to make her way to the door. Y/n turned to Chishiya, reaching up to hold his hand and gently tug on his arm. He raised his eyebrows in response. Kuina paused to witness what was happening. “It looks like she wants you to come with us, huh?”
He sighed, looking down at the girl who was gazing back up at him, tugging again on his hand as she started to shuffle her way towards Kuina. “Alright then. Let’s go.” He began to walk with her. All of them making their way out of the room.
They walked down the hallway, Y/n in the middle with Kuina on her left and Chishiya on her right. She had let go of his hand, huddled back against his side again, but this time fiddling with her shirt. After noticing the lack of people in the hallways Y/n had eased up somewhat, her head no longer dipped like before. Kuina spoke soon after, “It’s really early right now, so a lot of people are still sleeping. Which means we get first picks!”
“They won’t be for much longer with all the noise you're making.”
“You’re just grumpy.”
Chishiya merely hummed in reply.
A minuscule smile graced Y/n’s face as they spoke. The familiarity between them was comforting to her. When they got to the elevator they descended to the ground floor. Making their way to where she guessed the food was. Kuina was right, there was barely anyone around. The music she’d heard briefly last night wasn’t there and she’d maybe seen two or three people altogether since stepping out of the room.
They passed through a long corridor, the same look and style as anywhere else in the building, to a wide open space. Counters were lined up on one side of the room, behind them Y/n guessed that the kitchens were there. The steam emitted from that area was a tell-tale sign.
A multitude of tables and chairs were paired together, all dotted amongst the space available. She could even spot some sofas surrounding small coffee tables as well. Large doors, which were located on the opposite side of the floor, were closed. It looked like they led to what appeared to be a patio, conservatory? The walls were made out of glass, showing off the foliage around the area outside. At the moment though there wasn't much to see as the sky was still dark, no stars visible this time.
They moved towards the counter and now Y/n could smell the aromas of all kinds of food. Kuina handed her a plate, taking it with both hands. She stood up on her tiptoes, peeking over the counter to see what she could find.
The first thing to greet her were some scrambled eggs. Where did they even get eggs from? The thought quickly faded, only grateful that they were there in the first place. Further down the line she could spot sausages, bacon, pancakes, some bowls of different fruits and little packets of cake. There wasn’t much of the food that was out, it was still being prepared in the kitchens, and some of the available spaces for different foods weren’t filled either.
Maybe they’re filled for dinner?
“Get whatever you want! Everything's available!” Kuina said. Y/n looked up to her with a smile, and after looking at Chishiya, who nodded, she eagerly began to scoop some scrambled eggs onto her plate.
Kuina merely laughed before joining in gathering some of the foods she wanted. Chishiya waited until Y/n was done to gather some eggs for himself. Moving down the line Y/n picked out a sausage and two pancakes. There was even some syrup for them on the side. She reached up as best she could, pouring a small amount onto each pancake before placing it back down.
She then headed to the fruit bowls. Looking in them she saw one was watermelon, another grapes, strawberries and the last one was a mix of all three. Trying to reach her favourite bowl it barely skimmed her fingers making her unable to get the fruit she wanted. A small frown began to line her face, eyebrows down turning in her struggle to still reach the bowl of fruit.
An amused huff reached her ears before a hand came and retrieved the fruit she wanted. “Let’s go sit down.” Chishiya spoke, making his way over to the table Kuina had already sat down at. Y/n followed narrowly behind, both hands carrying her plate before placing it down in a seat between the two of them.
Chishiya placed the fruit next to her plate. Y/n looked back up to him after climbing onto her chair, a shy smile on her face before miming the sign for ‘thank you’. Eyebrows raised, he turned to Kuina. “I take it that means ‘thank you’?”
She nodded her head in reply, mouth already full with her choice of food. Chishiya looked back to the girl, nodding once before saying, “Eat up.” Y/n obliged, swinging her legs happily under the table as she ate. Having food as fresh as this was almost too good to be true. It had been so long since she had pancakes and syrup. Too long in her opinion.
After they had all eaten, Chishiya and Kuina making brief talk in between bites, Y/n leaned back in her seat. She was completely stuffed, having the most she’d eaten for a while now, still trying to eat one last piece of fruit.
Chishiya reached forward, moving the bowl away from her, “That’s enough now. You’re going to be sick if you keep eating.” She pouted at him, sad about her fruit being taken away but agreeing because she did in fact, not want to be sick.
Kuina cooed, saying, “It’s okay, you can have more fruit tomorrow, right Chishiya?” He nodded in reply as she continued speaking, “They might even have toast tomorrow, and sometimes they serve it with jam.” Her voice was bright and cheery, happy after having a warm meal.
“We should make our way back to our rooms, before people begin to actually wake up.” Chishiya spoke up.
Kuina nodded in agreement before calling out, “Hey, Chishiya, where is Y/n’s wristband? She doesn’t have one on.”
“She’s receiving one later today. Although I might need to speak to Hatter about it.” Kuina hummed, seeming in thought for a moment before standing up. “Right! I’ll be off then! I’m going to get some sleep.” She crouched down in front of Y/n, “It was lovely to meet you, Y/n.” A kind smile on her lips.
Y/n turned red, not used to so much forward attention from someone that was especially kind. Ducking her head while nodding, a shy smile present again on her face. Kuina grinned, cooing one last time before saying her goodbyes, taking her plate with her as she walked off.
Chishiya sighed, standing up not long after, Y/n following suit. They both took their plates, scraping off the remains into a close bin before depositing the now empty plates, bowls and utensils in empty buckets. All labelled and ready to be collected for washing up.
Y/n stayed close to Chishiya’s side again, this time keeping one hand on his hoodie as a few more people were milling about than before. After making their way back to the room she let go of his hoodie, taking off her shoes and placing them neatly by the door.
She stood for a second, watching as Chishiya made his way to the desk, digging around before pulling a few items out. “Here. You can draw with these.” He moved out of the way, making his way into the bathroom after gathering a few other things and shutting the door.
Y/n made her way over, climbing back onto the chair, briefly hearing the shower turn on in the background. Her nightmare from earlier was forgotten for the time being. Sent away, only for it to come back later. After pulling the few scraps of paper and a pen closer to her, she began to draw.

Milagro Navideño
What would this Christmas be without a word, a present and the biggest of hugs to my favourite person, my most cherished friend, and the person who awes me both with her kindness and sheer force of talent? Who else could I be talking about other than @the-al-chemist?
Al, thank you so much for another year of friendship, laughter, exploring, trading book recommendations, tearing each other's projects apart to make them better (lovingly) and getting completely soaked in the rain because if the outdoor museum doesn't close for another hour we're going to go in, no matter what.
I can't wait for next year's adventures. Merry Christmas. I love you. 🌻🎄

Warning: Plant abuse. Plant parents, look away.
December 22nd
“And you’ll promise to behave?” The smile on Dante’s face was soft as he spoke. “You’ll be a good girl and be extra pretty for me when I come back.”
“Are you quite done yet?” came a snort from somewhere behind him. With a decidedly more mischievous smile, Dante glanced over his shoulder.
“I wouldn’t mind you looking pretty for me, too, but I know better than asking you to behave.”
Reva snorted again, this time with laughter, as she pushed herself off the doorframe and joined Dante’s side. She pointed at the big plant he had been talking to.
“What’s so special about this one, anyway?”
“This is Milagro Navideño,” Dante said proudly. “That’s Spanish for -”
“Christmas Miracle.”
He nodded. “She is very rare and only blooms every few years at Christmas. I’ve been waiting forever for her to get these.”
He affectionately looked at the tiny buds peeking out from between fleshy, green leaves. Reaching out to touch them, Reva chuckled at Dante flinching.
“If you want me to take care of them while you’re having a ball in Spain, I’ll have to touch them. You do know that, don’t you?”
“I’m aware,” Dante sighed. “I really wish you could come.”
“So I can meet your family, or so someone else can water your flowers?” An indignant expression passed her face when Dante didn’t reply. “Oh, how hard can it be? I was a crack at Herbology.”
“You barely even got your O.W.L.”
“I wasn’t trying.”
“In any case, I made these for you,” Dante said diplomatically, pulling out a stack of colour-coded flashcards. “Black ink are daily tasks, the green ones have to be done every three days, and the red ones are emergency measures.” He gave Reva a look. “Please make sure there won't be any emergency measures.”
“Who do you take me for?”
Reva reached for the flashcards, but with a flick from Dante’s wand, they fluttered away and stuck themselves to their designated pots.
“Are you sure there aren’t any questions?” he asked again. “I can still ask Dana to do it.”
“Dana won’t arrive until Christmas Eve. Some kind of barkeep you are, wanting your plant buddies to go thirsty until then.”
“I need you to be serious about this, Reva.”
“I am.”
“No, you need to -”
“The only thing I need is for you to leave,” Reva said, turning Dante by the shoulders and marching him toward the door.
“And you really -”
Before he could finish, Reva grabbed him by the collar of his jumper and pressed her lips against his.
“Just go!” she laughed. “We’ll be perfectly fine, you’ll see.”
December 23rd
The Montrose Magpies’ last match of the year was approaching fast. It was scheduled for Boxing Day, and if they were able to win against the Wigtown Wanderers, they’d be one step closer to the top of the League.
When Reva returned from the training grounds after a long day of practice, it was all she could do not to fall asleep on the sofa. Across from her, her team- and housemate Rory McTavish slumped into an armchair, cracking his neck from side to side.
“Who knew your mum could be such a drill sergeant?”
Reva sat up, wincing at her aching back muscles. “You know how she is when we’re playing Wigtown. She can’t handle the idea of losing to the Wanderers.”
“One thing’s for sure, the flat would have to go up in flames for me to move again.” Rory raised one eyebrow at Reva. “Not giving you ideas, I hope.”
“No, too tired for arson. The sofa and I are best friends now.”
“Rude.” Rory tilted his head at her. “Don’t you have something to take care of before you become one with the furniture?”
Reva frowned. “What would that be? Shit!” she exclaimed a moment later, almost falling off the sofa in her hurry to get up.
“Wait with dinner,” she told Rory as she grabbed her coat and wand, “I’ll be right back.”
Dante’s flat was quiet when Reva entered it. She switched on all the lights and looked around, not sure what she had expected. This was silly, she chided herself, they were only plants. She had left them unattended for just a little over twenty-four hours; not like they would wilt and perish from a bit of alone-time.
Humming a song she had heard Dante sing the other day, she set to work, watering the plants in the guest rooms, the kitchen, the hallway and the living room. She had never realised just how many plants Dante had actually accumulated, but she diligently checked each and every pot for instructions. By the time she reached the bedroom, her already tired arms were aching.
She looked at the remaining plant pots thoughtfully. Surely they would be fine without that extra bit of water until the morning? Reva shook off the thought immediately. It didn’t matter whether she found all of this redundant or not. Dante cared about his plants, and she cared about him; she would do as he had asked her to.
Adjusting her grip on the watering can, Reva worked her way along the shelves. When she turned to refill it, she misjudged her momentum and heavily bumped against a tall rack filled with succulents. She watched with wide eyes as it swayed, the plant pots on it sliding towards the edge. The shelf teetered, seeming to stop in mid-air for a moment, and came crashing to the ground with a mighty slam.
Her heart hammering in her chest, Reva took in the mess of splintered wood, ceramic shards and soil littering the floorboards. Her throat grew tight as her eyes fell on the colourful remains of what had been the pot of Dante’s Christmas plant, now buried beneath the upper edge of the shelf. Of the plant itself, nothing could be seen.
Reva hastily took out her wand, repairing everything as best she could. Most of the plants looked worse for wear, but there was nothing to be done about it now. She inspected the broken leaves of the Christmas plant with a worried frown before turning it around so its good side was facing the room. Maybe Dante wouldn’t notice right away.
The only problem that remained was the flashcards. They had fallen off during the crash, and Reva had no idea which one went where. Eventually, she shrugged it off. There was no way to fix this without messaging Dante - which was out of the question - so she watered each of the plants ad libitum, with a little bit of extra to make up for the commotion she had caused.
Satisfied with her day’s work, Reva switched off the lights and left.
December 24th
When Reva opened the door to Dante’s flat on the morning of Christmas Eve, she found her hopes of finding the repotted plants up and well crushed.
There hadn’t been enough pot saucers for all plants, so she had distributed them at random. Now, puddles of water were covering the floor, while most of the plants were either hanging their heads or had collapsed onto the rims of their pots altogether.
With a curse on her lips, Reva’s eyes settled on the Christmas plant. Because it was so special to Dante and she had been sorry for crushing it underneath the shelf, she had given it an extra generous amount of water; as a result, its leaves were now a yellowish green and hanging limply from the stem.
Panic was rising in her chest. She needed to do something, and she needed to do it now.
Once she had calmed down, Reva carried all of the leaking pots into the kitchen, magically desiccated them and picked the correct soil for each of them with the help of Dante’s books and her buried Herbology knowledge.
By the end of the day, Dante’s flat was clean, and most plants still a bit ragged but otherwise upright and well. Reva breathed a sigh of relief as she put the last of them onto the shelf. The feeling disappeared, however, when she turned to face her problem child.
Milagro Navideño hadn’t appreciated Reva’s efforts at resuscitation. It had looked sickly before, but now its colour had changed from yellow to almost grey. It was on the verge of dying, even Reva could tell that much, but she refused to give up just yet.
She had to save this plant, no matter what.
***
The light coming from her parents’ windows was warm and golden when Reva Apparated to their front door. She paused to listen to the mix of voices and laughter drifting outside, a smile forming on her face that wavered only slightly as she adjusted the plant pot in her arms and entered.
After a round of hugs and hellos, Reva’s brother Dylan nodded at the plant in Reva’s hands.
“Who has been naughty enough to get that thing for Christmas?”
“No one,” Reva said defensively. “It’s Dante’s.”
“I didn’t know you wanted to break up with him.”
“What’s the matter with it?” Dylan’s girlfriend Dana asked sympathetically, after elbowing Dylan into the side.
With a deep sigh, Reva handed Milagro to her and recounted what had happened. Nodding every now and again, Dana inspected the sickly plant, prodding and probing it carefully.
“I don’t even know where to start with this,” she sighed eventually as she handed Reva the plant back.
“Is there nothing you can do at all?”
“Nothing that would help short term. When is Dante coming home?”
“The day after Boxing Day.”
“That won’t be enough time, I’m afraid.”
Reva hung her head. “Can’t we just give it a Growth Potion or something?”
A look of alarm flickered over Dana’s face. “It might work, but…”
“Let’s do it then!”
“No, there’s no saying what a Growth Potion would do after everything you’ve done with it. It might kill it for good.”
Dana wasn’t to be swayed from her resolution, so Reva let the topic drop. When the rest of her family had gone to sleep, she took the small bottle from Dante’s personal storage from her pocket. Holding the potion into the light coming from the window of her old bedroom, Reva thoughtfully tilted it this way and that.
Then she shrugged, unstoppered it, and upended the whole thing into the plant plot.
It wasn’t like it could get any worse.
December 27th
Like so often, Reva had been wrong.
On the morning of Christmas Day, she had woken to something repeatedly brushing her cheek. Thinking that Vega, her mother’s one-eyed calico cat, had snuck into her room, Reva had tried to push her away without opening her eyes.
By the time she had realised that whatever was bothering her didn’t feel like Vega’s fur at all, half her room had already been covered by thrashing Milagro vines. Almost falling out of bed in her hurry to get up, Reva made short work of the proliferating plant and hexed it back to its original state.
She hadn’t told anyone about her little mishap with the Growth Potion, and since she was now thoroughly fed up with Dante’s stupid plant, Reva had dumped it into his bedroom and decided to forget about it for the time being.
On the day Dante would return from Spain, she couldn’t push her bad conscience away any longer. She nervously waited for his Portkey to arrive, trying to keep her face straight when Dante took her into his arms and kissed her.
After finding their way back to the flat above the Hogshead Inn, Reva’s joy at Dante’s return had turned into a nervous flutter in her stomach. As they were about to enter the door, Dante paused.
“Are you alright? You’ve been very quiet.”
“Just the match yesterday,” Reva fibbed. “It got pretty late.”
Dante raised eyebrows ever so slightly, but didn’t comment any further. When he dropped his bag in the hallway and turned to her with a smile, Reva stifled a sigh of relief. He hadn’t noticed anything yet; another moment of calm before the inevitable.
“It’s good to be home,” he said with a content look around. His eyes settled on her. “I missed you over Christmas.”
“I missed you, too,” Reva sighed. “You have no idea how much.”
“So sentimental, that’s new.” The corners of his mouth twitching, Dante pulled a neatly wrapped gift from his bag, the paper as outrageously patterned as his favourite shirts. “I’ve been looking forward to giving you this. Merry Christmas.”
Seeing the present in Dante’s hands, Reva froze. She had gotten him something as well, of course, but over the drama of the past few days, she had entirely forgotten about it. Her thoughts racing, she took her gift and kissed Dante on the cheek.
“I didn’t know we’d exchange gifts right here in the hallway,” she mumbled, frantically trying to come up with a plan. “I’ll just go and fetch yours. It’s… in your bedroom. Yes, that’s where it is.”
Dante laughed and placed his hands on her hips. “Shouldn’t I come along then?”
“It’s not that kind of gift.”
“Shame.”
“Just wait here, will you?” Reva begged, slowly backing away. “I’ll be right back.”
The moment she closed the door to Dante’s room, she had to fight the urge to scream. Resting her hands on top of her head, she turned in the middle of the room. She had no idea what to tell Dante about why she hadn’t brought - or even wrapped - his present. She was still trying to find a proper conclusion when there was a knock on the door.
“Reva? Is everything alright?”
Nothing was, in fact, alright, and Reva had a mind to tell Dante so, but before she could, he had already entered the room. His eyes widened as he looked not at her but the spot where she had put his overwatered, desiccated, magically-grown-and-cut Christmas plant in a fit of rage.
“What have you done?” he whispered, taking a hesitant step into the room.
Reva screwed her eyes shut. “I can explain.”
“I hope so,” Dante said as he moved past her, “because you’re a bloody genius.”
Baffled, Reva opened her eyes again. When she looked at the source of all her plights, her mouth dropped open.
It seemed like the supposedly delicate Milagro Navideño had appreciated Reva’s desperate mistreatment, because what had formerly been a cut-down ruin of sickly green leaves now stood lush and tall. The leaves had regained their shine, new buds sprouting in place of the old ones, and there, right on top, the biggest one of them had opened.
Reva moved closer, touching her fingers to the velvety petal. It was dark red with white tips, looking like someone had dipped it in the snow. The blossom’s centre emitted a sweetly smelling sap, which sat in tiny drops on the petals and sparkled in the light coming from the window.
“Unbelievable,” Reva whispered.
“A veritable Christmas miracle,” Dante smiled broadly and put his arm around her shoulder. “Tell me your secret. How did you get her to bloom?”
Reva swallowed, hoping he wouldn’t notice the colour rising to her cheeks. “I took good care of it, I guess.”
Dante’s laugh was warm as he pressed a kiss against her temple. “That you did, mi vida. You’re full of surprises, you know that?”
At last, Reva’s lips curved into a smile. Chuckling to herself, she rested her head against Dante’s shoulder.
“It looks like I am.”
