Summary: Maria comes home late again and R has started not to care anymore.

A/N: I’m realizing as I’m getting this ready to post that I didn’t really follow the prompt since it asked for comfort but I’d be willing to do a part 2 to this if that’s something you guys would like to see lmao so sorry. This was also way angstier bc i wanted to make it inspired by Last Kiss by Taylor Swift but decided against it :,)

Maria finished filing her paperwork and took a glance at her watch. 12:48 AM. You were going to kill her. 

She stuffed her belongings in her bag and made her way to the parking garage as quickly as she could, hopping on her motorcycle and driving off to the apartment you shared. 

Her mind was racing. You’d been giving her a hard time lately because of her work hours. You were right to, Maria thought. You deserved better, to have a girlfriend who was actually home and spent time with you. She gritted her teeth and drove faster. Something needed to change. She couldn’t take the look of disappointment on your face whenever she arrived home late from work when you knew she wasn’t coming from a mission. 

There were so many things she could blame. She’d often lose track of time while doing paperwork, she’d take on a larger workload than necessary, and she would always pick up slack from her coworkers. But you didn’t deserve excuses, you deserved for her to be there when you fell asleep, holding you close to her. 

Upon entering the apartment, she found you sleeping on the couch under a blanket in a hoodie of hers. Maria could tell that you’d tried to wait up for her, the tv playing at a low volume, a drink sitting on the coffee table looking near empty.

She chewed the inside of her bottom lip guiltily as she turned off the tv and put the glass in the sink before leaning down to pick you up and take you to bed. 

You stirred awake in her arms, nuzzling against her collarbone, “What time is it?”

Maria looked down at you, “1:09”. She felt you sigh against her.

Your silence made her uneasy. It was much worse than if you’d yelled at her. Silence meant you didn’t have the energy to fight for her to stay anymore. You were starting to accept Maria’s absence.

She was going to lose you sooner or later and it would be her own doing.

Maria set you down in bed and took a cold shower.

Though your eyes were closed and you were comfortably in bed, now that your girlfriend was home, you found it hard to fall back asleep without her beside you. As upset at her as you were, you still missed her. There were many moments the two of you used to share but you rarely spent any time together anymore. 

You resented her for making you feel more like a roommate than her girlfriend. After one too many conversations about her work hours, you’d decided that if you didn’t see a change from her sometime very soon, you wouldn’t be her girlfriend any longer. You had just started to feel optimistic before tonight as she hadn’t stayed late for more than an hour and a half in the past week. You felt like an idiot for believing things would be different.

After her quick shower, Maria changed into sweats and got into bed next to you, looking down at you, seemingly asleep. She combed back the hair that was in your face and felt an uncomfortable tightness in her chest, “I’m sorry,” she whispered, sinking into the bed.

You turned onto your side to face her at that and threw your arm over her midsection. You didn’t answer her. It wasn’t okay, you wanted to tell her, but you didn’t. You were done fighting, and if she wanted to destroy your relationship by deciding that work was more important than you were time and time again, so be it.

fury’s lesbians edition

now for anyone who might not know (but i feel like you all know) fury’s lesbians is a headcanon that includes carol, natasha and maria hill.

sometimes it will include sharon, however i personally, i don’t like to include sharon in the fury’s lesbians headcanon. partially bc im not that fond of her, but also i feel like ppl over look someone important.

maria rambeau.

i feel like she would be included by extension of carol, bc idc what anyone says carolmaria were more than friends!

but she also founded SWORD (at least according to wiki). and if you’re maria rambeau, who would you call to help found a super secret agency based on protection from extraterrestrial beings and etc? someone you know who works at another super secret agency, nick fury!

and im a firm believer that nick definitely watched out for maria and monica on behalf of carol bc that’s her family. i personally feel as if they would’ve grew to have a good relationship because of carol and without her, so not including her in the headcanon feels very ?

as always, you’re not obligated to include her but the fact that people barely include her in the hc even though carolmaria basically raised a child together and her and nick’s tiny moments during captain marvel (mainly the end)

like i don’t know how people don’t think to include her but think about sharon instantly. also, i just really don’t like sharon, so she’ll never be in any (positive) headcanon i have!

side note: i haven’t read the comics, not for lack of trying, but i don’t know where to start. anyway, for anyone who might bring up anything comic wise, i really don’t give a shit. sharon’s annoying in the mcu and she’s probably even more annoying in the comics!!

Ava starr, mcu- edgy ace lesbian. Love it, love aroace Ava headcanons as well.

Nebula and mantis from the mcu- these two both give off the vibe and would be adorable and pretty funny together, bugborg is sweet

Maria hill from the mcu POSSIBLY- I know she’s in agents of shield which i havnt watched so I don’t know everything about her, but if they give her a bit more story it’d be cool

agatha = lesbian and somewhere on the asexual spectrum. probably demisexual? maybe demiromantic too. she/her pronouns, but will let people refer to them with it/its or they/them too

wanda = pan(canon) and she/they pronouns. sometimes she also likes he pronouns bc it makes him happy, but not all the time.

natasha = omnisexual w a strong preference for women. she/her pronouns but is totally fine with they/them if thats what ppl wanna use

yelena = aroace lesbian oriented she/xe

tony stark = bisexual he/him

bucky = bisexual, he/they

mantis = pansexual, non binary, they/them sometimes she/her

vision = asexual, biromantic? he/they or they/he depending how they feel, it/its is okay too

hulk = aroace no pronouns refer to hulk only as hulk \\ banner = asexual panromantic he/they pronouns

loki = (i mean this is all canon (even in the mcu which is a surprise)) genderfluid and bisexual

I am going to ask this one back to you because i honestly think she could be both and i need advice: “would you say Maria Hill is more of a distinguished lesbian or a functional lesbian?” Help me out here 😂

Oh my god I totally forgot about this 😂. I still don’t have a definitive answer, but here’s my thoughts

Personally, I’m leaning more towards functional lesbian. I mean, if we’re looking at Maria as a whole and not just her interactions with girlfriends/potential girlfriends/wife/etc I’d definitely say distinguished because she is a very put-together person as a whole.

However, if we zoom in on her romantic life, I feel like Maria would be a lil awkward and not really be as smooth af as she is in her job and stuff. SO I’m going with functional for now.

Alternative answer: Maria is a disaster lesbian because she is terrible at flirting AND knowing when someone else is flirting with her. Because honestly I love the hc that Maria couldn’t recognize flirting even if someone (Natasha, possibly?) sent her a letter saying that she loved Maria romantically and wanted to date her romantically (I think I read this in a fic but I can’t remember which one).

thank you for this!!!! it’s under the cut bc it got long oops

maria knew when she was really really young that she was different. knew that there was something that set her apart from (most of) the rest of the girls in her grade. as time went on more and more things would add up. when girls would be talking about their crushes, if she were expected to participate, there was a lot of just. general agreement. her choosing whoever the most popular was and going off that. also lots of just…. like celebrities. unattainable male figures.

lots of convincing herself, for a very long time, that she wasn’t attracted to women. even just the thought of it made her feel BAD, made her skin crawl. even though, really, she knew. there was a lot of self hatred involved, a lot of making herself emotionally (and otherwise) available to men to try and prove (to who???? herself?? her shitty father????) that she was straight. a lot of the internalized homophobia was a direct result of the casual external homophobia she’d hear at home — her father….. was not a good man.

her first experience with a woman was when she was eighteen. she’d just turned eighteen and moved out, moved into a shithole apartment with a friend, and they had a few people over to try and make the place feel more like a home. drinks were consumed, games were played, and maria found herself kissing a friend of her friend. jane. (i’ll write a hc abt her/their relationship eventually). things kind of…. changed? for maria then. she was out of her father’s house, she didn’t have that external pressure. that being said it… it wasn’t that simple. it still took some serious time and work for her to accept that she wasn’t straight. even after everything with jane, all the effort that she put into herself, she didn’t come out.

she had already started the work towards enlisting in the marines and she didn’t want to jeopardize her future career (the only thing she could really see herself doing) by coming out. 

at this point maria was still labeling herself as bi despite her very obvious lack of attraction to men — there was still a lot of internalized lesbophobia that she needed to work through. she kept it to herself because of work.

after her first active tour of duty she spent too much time sitting on her couch doing nothing but overthinking and overdrinking. there was a lot of going out and drinking and sleeping around and otherwise just… not being good to herself.

it was only during her second tour that she finally worked through her shit and owned it. came to terms properly with the fact that she is a lesbian. of course, this still wasn’t something she made known to …. anyone. dadt was still a thing and she was at risk of losing her job.

since madripoor and working for shield and just, not being involved in the military anymore, maria is a lot more ““““open”””” about her sexuality (in quotes because maria lets people know things about her about as often as we have a solar eclipse). she’s not ashamed of herself anymore, it’s not… something that she hides. but she doesn’t flaunt it either (she doesn’t flaunt anything, she’s an excruciatingly private person) and if she’s asked point blank she’s not going to lie or deflect it.

tldr; it took her literally decades to accept herself and it sort of happened in stages.
