American Ginseng Roots by Wayne National Forest
Via Flickr:
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) can be harvested from the national forest with a permit and under specific conditions. Permits are $20 and are sold at our offices through the harvest season, which starts on September 1 and ends on December 31. Ginseng permits are sold separately for each unit of the Wayne National Forest (Athens, Ironton, and Marietta). A permit purchased for ginseng harvest in one unit cannot be used to harvest ginseng in another unit. Ohio has set specific laws controlling the harvest of ginseng, which permittees must follow in addition to rules specific to the national forest. Ohio law requires that with ginseng only mature roots (i.e., those with three leaf stems) be harvested. It also stipulates that harvesters replant the berries dug up with the root. DC OC | Stories
Faith, Trust, & Fairy Dust: After saving a mysterious woman from her assailant, Billie Sunday is left with the fate of two worlds in her hands. Armed with only her Metahuman powers and a group of loyal friends, can Billie be the hero that Fairyland needs?
Honor Among Rogues: Jahzara lives a double life. By day she is Jahzara Nwadike, daughter of business mogul Nneka Nwadike. At night, she's Fatale, member of the Watchers. But both sides of her share one goal: destroy Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises.
There are many words to describe Vicia Lopez. Punk. Cocky. Lost. Rogue. All these traits make her the perfect Watcher and the perfect opponent of the Red Hood. But what happens when her feelings for him become more than hatred?
Nyctophilia (Back from the Dead): Greynasha's days as a member of the Cat's Claw gang were simple. But then the Big Bang changed everything-- including her. She's gotten used to the changes, but refuses to give up her life. Unfortunately the new circumstances won't allow for refusal.
Cosmogyral (Between Heaven and Hell): Life on Earth suits Sophia Evangelista. Being able to go to school, play video games, and travel across the world is all that Heaven and Themyscira couldn't offer. Everything's going well until the Princess of Hell shows up at her doorstep with an urgent message.
Celebrity Skin: Teen idol. Megastar. World-renowned celebrity. Marietta Brooks has it all, even as the foundation her career is built on threatens to crack under shady dealings. But Marietta is not taking this laying down. Donning the alias of Glamor, she's going to do whatever it takes to preserve her image-- even at the risk of losing everything.
Back Home I Go: For as long as Sasha can remember, Venice Beach has always been her home; but she can't shake off the feeling that there's something out there calling for her. There has to be answers and Sasha wants them-- even if she has to join the Titans to get them.
Stories for Daliah, Venus, and Flordelis are WIPs.

HP NEW GEN Parental Masterlist
Sooooo, I’m beginning to realize seeing the same style headcanons constantly might get a bit boring for some after a while, so I’ve decided to branch out and provide you with something new and exciting (although I will still be posting those headcanons).
When reading the headcanons about my OCs, some of you may wonder who these kid’s parents are. While I give context in the posts themselves, I thought it would be a fun idea to create a masterlist of who’s the child of who, just so I can say this blog has some variety to it.
This list will only include the parents of my OCs, as everyone already knows who the canon character’s parents are anyway. Also, the pairings on this list are - for the most part - very random. In addition, I’ve made the executive decision to cross this universe over with that of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda” because there’s no way she would not have gone to Hogwarts with the Potter-Gen crew. All this to say, this list might get a little crazy. You have been warned.
One more thing, and this one’s pretty straightforward: This post is going to be rather long, as I’m still trying to find a happy medium between short little headcanons and thirty page essays content wise. I apologize in advance.
Thus, without further adieu:
Harry Potter: New Generation - The Parental Masterlist
*Links will be provided for the non-OC parents who are very - very - obscure*

A Deadly Dance
The soft thud of feet hitting the roof drew Marinette’s focus away from her target. She stood, leveling her gun on her company as she swiftly turned to face him.
"Am I interrupting something?"
"Nothing that concerns you."
“Really? I don’t typically see people on top of skyscrapers armed in the middle of the night. Much less watching a prominent business. Usually spells trouble.”
She moved, walking around Nightwing as she did so, putting him between her and Wayne Enterprises so she could keep an eye on both as she dealt with this intrusion.
“You think I’m trouble?”
“I know you are,” he said, moving closer.
She hesitated pulling the trigger as he made his move. She ducked, rolling out of the way as he closed the distance, holstering her guns as she stood.
Pulling her garrote out, she held it taut as Nightwing brought his escrima stick down, using it to block his blow before wrapping it around his arm. She swung herself up, using his arm to anchor herself, legs wrapping around his neck as she moved, flipping herself over him, landing deftly on her feet as she hooked her arm around his neck using her momentum to bring him to the ground. Planting her foot firmly on his chest, she stared down at the masked vigilante.
“Not often someone gets this close without me noticing them.”
He gave a small grin. “I must be special then.”
She narrowed her eyes slightly as he said that. Glancing for a half second back at Wayne Enterprises to see if her target was still there as he continued, grabbing her attention once more.
“What do you want with Lucius Fox?”
“I don’t think you’re in the position to be asking questions here.”
“Maybe next time I will be,” he said, grabbing her foot and yanking, pulling her down on top of him, rolling so he rested on top of her. “What about now?
She gave a small smile. “What’s it to you?” she asked softly, flipping their positions once more, so her knee was digging into his chest. “And just so you know,” She tilted her head to the side as she leant over him. “You won’t be lucky enough for a next time,” she said softly, activating her Widow’s Bite as she punched him in the chest. Watching him for a moment to make sure he was down before turning her back on him.
Turning she let out a small hiss of frustration finding that Wayne Enterprises had gone dark. Her target’s whereabouts were now unknown. She shook her head, as she moved, a quick walkabout the roof as she cased the alleys, roofs, windows, and streets around her stopping for a moment as she spotted a black and blue motorcycle.
A quick check of Nightwing’s pockets, relinquished the keys to her possession, as she made her escape.
A small groan, from behind her spurred her into action as she jumped, grabbing onto the fire escape to help control her descent as she quickly scaled down the building. Dropping the last 10 feet and landing in a crouch, only sparing a quick glance up at the sound of movement from the rooftop, she moved, swinging her leg up and over a black and blue motorcycle, throwing the keys into the ignition and starting it, wasting no time in taking off. Weaving between cars and into the late night traffic, a small grin making its way on her face.
Tonight may have been a failure, but she had back up plans for a reason. At least she’d gotten a new bike out of it. The best one she’d ever rode. Once she found and got rid of the bugs and trackers it was bound to have planted throughout.
She swerved off the road, dumping the bike, stashing it for later use after a quick preliminary sweep. Ducking into her safe house she tossed her weapons aside, closing her eyes for a few hours. There was work to be done come morning.
-----------------------------------
“Excuse me, sir. Do you have an appointment?”
Dick froze as he heard a familiar voice speak up from the long-vacant secretary desk, that he didn’t look twice at on his way in. He turned, heart stopping as he put a face to the voice. The assassin from the other night. Marietta Davids according to the name plate.
“Has the cat got your tongue or do you have an appointment?” She asked.
“I- no. I don’t. I was unaware Tim had gotten himself a secretary.”
“Mr. Drake hired me yesterday. Now, if you don’t have any business here-” she stopped as another voice interrupted.
“It’s fine, Ms. Davids. And please, I keep telling you, call me Tim not Mr. Drake.” “Only if you stop calling me Ms. Davids, Mr. Drake,” she replied with a small smile.
“Marietta, this is my brother Dick. I’m going to regret this later but just let him in when he comes by. Save us all the headache. And terrible flirting.”
“If you’re worried about me, I can handle myself.”
“I watched you trip over air three times this morning,” Tim deadpanned in response. Dick made a strangled choking noise as Tim said that.
That. That did not fit with what he’d seen the other night. The fluid grace and confidence tripping over thin air. Nope. Not at all.
Dick was pulled from his thoughts as a finger poked his cheek. "What the hell has gotten into you, Dick?" Dick didn't dare take his eyes off the secretary as he side-stepped towards Tim, grabbing his arm and dragging him into the office. "Fire her, now."
"No." "She's an assassin, Tim!" "You know I carefully vet anyone who works close to me." "That's what scares me." Tim stared at him for a moment, before crossing his arms, and sitting back in his chair. "She's staying."
Dick let out a breath as he stared at his brother. Tim stared back, looking unimpressed as Dick ran a hand through his hair, letting out a breath.
“Why don’t you believe me?”
“Oh I do. But this bugs you, so she’s staying,” the grin on Tim’s face was infuriating. “But if it makes you feel better I’ll monitor and bug her work. Happy?”
“This is the best I’m going to get isn’t it?”
“Do you really need me to answer that?”
Dick had barely made it two steps out the door before falling back as another body slammed into him and a flurry of papers rained down around the two. He looked up to see Marietta push herself up slightly, hands planted on her chest as she stared down at him, her face red as she looked away quickly. Dick swallowed as he felt his face heat up.
“I am so sorry. I wasn’t looking where i was going and then you were there and oh my gosh are you okay? I didn’t hurt you did I?”
“I’m fine. Are you okay? You didn’t twist your ankle or anything did you?” He gave her a tight smile as he picked himself up, offering her a hand up and steadying her before helping bend down to pick up the fallen files.
“No. No I didn’t. Thank you. I really am sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
“Thank you. Again I’m sorry. Have a good rest of your day,” she said, smiling at him before turning away. She wobbled slightly on her high heels as she walked away, re-sorting her fallen papers in her arms as she did.
Dick clamped a hand over Tim’s face as the latter opened his mouth.
“Don’t even say it. Don’t you dare.”
“I would never. See you at home, Dick,” Tim said as he pushed Dick’s arm away, twisting away, the indignance clear in his voice. “I’ll try not to let the dangerous assassin do anything while you’re gone.”
“Tim-”
“Goodbye, Dick,” Tim replied, pushing him away and disappearing back into his office, the soft click of the lock settling behind him. Dick shook his head as he headed back out, passing by Marietta’s desk.
“Goodbye Mr. Grayson.”
Dick froze, turning, hearing his last name.
“Is there a problem, Dick?”
“No. No. Not at all. Sorry to take up your time.”
“Feel free anytime. Have a good night, Dick.”
“You too, Marietta.”
-----------------------------------
Marinette smiled softly as she walked away, carefully wobbling on her heels as she walked away, shuffling the papers in her arms, setting them down on her desk, she idly reorganised them, brushing a hair behind her ear as she activated her comm to listen to the bug she planted on Dick.
“Don’t even say it. Don’t you dare.”
“I would never. See you at home, Dick. I’ll try not to let the dangerous assassin do anything while you’re gone.”
She’d been made. At least partially based on Tim’s voice, the sarcasm crystal clear as the two brothers parted ways. Dick knew something he shouldn’t. Especially since she’d only truly interacted with one person. Nightwing. The only one who had a semblance of what she was. Oh this just got so much more interesting.
She glanced up as she heard footsteps approaching,
“Goodbye Mr. Grayson.”
She tilted her head to the side a little as he turned back to look at her.
“Is there a problem, Dick?”
“No. No. Not at all. Sorry to take up your time.”
“Feel free anytime. Have a good night, Dick.”
“You too, Marietta.”
-----------------------------------
“You’ve upped your game.”
She blocked his punch, grabbing his wrist and twisting, pulling one of his escrima sticks out and twirling it in her hand as she took a step back, watching him.
“Well I know what I’m up against now.”
“Do you?” she asked, tilting her head slightly. “Or is it after one brief encounter you think you know what you need to know about me.”
“I’ve dealt with assassins before.”
“Not with my kind.”
“How do you know that?”
“You’d either be dead or you’d recognise what you were up against,” she said, circling him.
“Would I? I thought I’d know all the heavy hitters at this point. The League, the Court.”
She arched a brow as he listed those. “Finally come out of the darkness have they?”
“In a way.”
“So you just happened to blindly stumble upon them?”
“Why do you care?”
She shrugged. “Good to know what others know.”
“Why do you hide in the dark?”
“With the lights out, it's less dangerous. Isn’t that why you bats operate at night? The safety to hide and instill fear? To appear and vanish seemingly at will?” she asked, closing the distance between the two of them.
“We’re not the same.”
She tilted her head. “No?” she asked, brushing past him. He jammed his escrima stick into her side, letting out a small taze. She buckled, letting out a small cry, giving him an opportunity to pin her to the ground, stealing his other stick back.
“Game over.”
“No! You don’t understand.”
“That you kill people for money, the thrill, or both? That you don’t care about who you kill?”
“It’s not like that.”
“Care to enlighten me?”
She turned her head to the side, refusing to look at him. “I don’t have a choice. This needs to be done.”
Nightwing’s grip softened slightly. “Are you in danger? Who are you working for? Are they holding something over you? I can help you.”
“You can?” she asked, meeting his eyes once more.
He nodded, holding a hand out to help her up. “If you talk to me I can help you.”
She nodded, giving him a small smile as she took his hand. He started to help her up before she yanked, pulling him into her as she pulled her knee up to hit him in the side. She moved around him, letting go of his arm briefly as she threw her weight back into him. He ducked, rolling away, reaching back for his escrima sticks, coming up empty.
She gave a quick, soft laugh. “These are nice. I can see why Fox has our attention now.”
She twirled them idly in her hands as she moved, leaning closer with a smirk. “And just so you know, I am so much more than an assassin. Have a good night, Dick.”
She pulled away, giving a swift punch to his temple to knock him out, leaving him there as she walked away. She tossed his escrima sticks to the side as she walked away, glancing back at him once as she disappeared over the ledge of the building.
-----------------------------------
Dick shoved his hands in his jacket, he felt a small lump in his pocket. Frowning, he pulled it out, revealing one of the trackers from his bike and a small bug.
“I can’t believe it,” he muttered as he repocketed his tracker, focusing more on the small bug in his hand, emblazoned with a faint red hourglass etched into the side. Four little legs stuck out on either side, clearly designed to help stick to walls and underneath objects. If he’d seen it from a distance he’d have assumed it was a spider.
He ran his finger over the small etching on the back of it. A black widow. He let out a small laugh. Fitting for an assassin.
Dick shook his head as he entered Wayne Enterprises, making his way into his brothers office, placing the bug and tracker on the desk.
“She bugged me, Tim.”
Tim looked briefly at the items before handing them back and standing up with a small shrug.
“I hate to break it to you, Dick. She’s the best secretary I’ve ever had and she hasn’t once done a thing to cause suspicion or that’s out of line.”
“Don’t you think that’s suspicious?”
“No, I think it’s competent unlike you.”
“You wound me.”
“Good.”
“Tim-”
“I know Dick. Don’t worry,” Tim said, moving the two of them closer to the office door. “I’ll be careful.” He shot Dick a grin as he shut his office door in his brother’s face. “See you later!” he called as the soft click ended their conversation.
Dick let out a breath, considering for a moment picking the lock just for the sake of annoying Tim, when the soft click of heels behind him caught his attention, turning he saw Marrietta walking towards her desk. He moved following after her.
“Who do you think you’re fooling?”
Marietta turned, depositing her files, before facing Dick in front of her desk. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Your game. Using my brother, my father’s company to get close to your target.”
“What? You don’t enjoy this little dance of ours, Blue Bird?”
“I know what you are,” he lied, looking away slightly as he changed the subject.
She leaned closer, looking up at him. “And what am I?”
“A Black Widow,” he said, taking a shot, placing her bug and the bike’s tracker on the desk next to her hand. She swept them up, tucking them away, swiftly.
“I expected you to take longer to find them. And I am impressed you managed to guess what I am...” she trailed off studying him, a small smile slowly growing. “Anyway you’ll be happy to hear I’ll be out of your nest, for a while at least, soon.”
“I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
She shrugged, ducking away from him. “That depends on how you look at it. Have a nice day, Mr. Grayson.”
Dick watched as she aggressively ignored his presence before leaving, missing the small smile on her face as he left.
-----------------------------------
He blinked. She didn’t care who she killed, the bodies that lay in the hall was proof enough of that, yet she had spared him, twice.
The soft click of a door shutting was the only warning he had, snapping him from the scene in front of him. Dick ducked into an open doorway, closing the door mostly behind him, peering through the crack as the footsteps drew closer.
Dick watched Marietta stop, Lucius bound and unconscious slung over her shoulder, looking around for a moment, before she called out, “You can come out Dick. I won’t bite, and I'd really hate to kill you because you became a loose end."
Dick stepped out, leaning against the doorframe as she watched. "So this is the end of the dance, Marietta?"
She paused, looking at him before answering with a small, tight smile. “My name’s Marinette. Not Marietta.”
“Is it?”
She tilted her head slightly. “Consider it a peace offering. I’m trying to build a bridge here.”
”Why would you do that?”
“In case I ever need help. You’ve offered it before. I might need to cash in on it later on. And you make a great dance partner.”
"Don't be too sure about that."
“You have a good heart, Dick. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure he’s returned safe and sound by the end of the month. I’ll see you again, Dick.”
"I don't trust you. "
"You'd be foolish if you did. But you haven't stopped me yet. No doubt out of concern for Lucius here. Scared he'll be hurt in the crossfire."
Dick stepped closer, closing the short distance between them. "You're at a disadvantage."
"Am I?" She asked as she swept his feet out from underneath him, placing one on his chest, peering down at him, as she switched her hold on Lucius. "Stay down," she ordered softly. "Goodbye Dick."
“Goodbye, Marinette.”
She smiled briefly before disappearing out into the maze of halls, leaving Dick behind.
He smiled pulling out his phone and checking on the tracker he planted on Marinette.
"Until next time."

marinette looked across the gym to the girl people dubbed the 'ice princess,' delilah wayne.
'she's pretty.' marinette thought as she sat on the ground, drinking her water, watching her gym coach speak about what they are doing tomorrow.
today, all they did was did a work out video, and from what marinette gathered from the 30 minutes of it, she could tell delilah was built.
"... and tomorrow we are playing volleyball." the coach finished.
"what's the point? delailah's team is going to automatically win," a girl said.
"yeah," her friend agreed.
"well that's not my fault, gym class over! pack up girls! i'll see you tomorrow!" the coach called, blowing her whistle.
'lunch time.' marinette though as she walked to the lunch room. marinette preferred to pack her own lunch so she didn't have to wait in line.
'looks like i can't sit outside today.' it was her fourth day at her new school, and so far she ate outside every day, but today it was raining heavily. 'that seat looks good,' she thought as she walked to the open chairs in the corner by a window.
marinette saw a little lady bug and thought of tikki. she still has her because she was the guardian, yes, but in order to keep the world balanced, she had to pick up the ladybug and black cat miraculous.
she had to take away the miraculous from chat noir due to... issues.
'no stop!' marinette though, shaking off the bad thoughts, 'you're okay!'
marinatte now carries the mouse miraculous.
marinette loved mullo, yes, but she and tikki had a one no one could ever breaks, 'i miss you tikki-'
marinette heard a little clank of a tray from next to her, "hello?" the person said.
she looked up and realized it was the pretty girl from her gym class, "oh- ugh hi!"
marinette was pan, everyone knew that, but because she was pan, certain people thought they could take that to their advantage.
'okay marinette! stop pitying the past!' marinette scolded herself in her mind.
"ugh, i sit here." delilah said, trying to stop herself from stuttering.
marinatte blinked, "oh, okay!" she then scooted over so delilah could have room.
"thank you." delilah said, sitting down across from her.
"so what's your name?" delilah asked, acting as if she didn't know her name.
'pretty girl wants to no my name?!' marinette screamed in her head, 'okay, okay!'
"m-marinette!" she smiled.
"delilah." delilah said, looking up at marinette.
"that's a pretty name!" marinette looked at her with stars in her eyes.
'how am i not supposed to fall for her when she looks at me like that?' delilah thought, turning away from the smiling girl.
"thank you." delilah said, looking down, taking some of her green beans.
"welcoming." marinette said before the two fell into a silence.
it wasn't the uncomfortable ones that marinette usually experienced, it was peaceful, calming in a way that marinette can't quite put her finger on.
a few minutes past and delilah finally got enough courage to talk, "so, are you new?"
"i... yes." marinette said, looking up from her dumplings she made this morning.
"why did you move?" delilah asked.
"well, it was a family problem," marinette vaguely said, looking off into the distance.
"oh, my bad." delilah looked down, ashamed she asked.
"it's okay, people get curious, why did a girl from paris come to gotham? almost unheard of. who comes to gotham willingly?"
'paris?' delilah thought as she looked up to meet marinette's eyes.
"but it's okay, if anything, i'm happier here." marietta smiled at the ceiling.
"well, if-" delilah was cut off by the bell.
"what was that?" marietta asked looking over to her.
"nothing." delilah said, "see you later, marinette."
"yeah! okay."
as marientte was walking down the hall, she heard students saying things about how the "ice princess" sat with someone.
"did you hear? the ice princess ate with someone at lunch today and didn't complain!"
"no way!"
"yeah! i saw it with my own eyes! i don't know who it is though!"
'what's so cold about her?' marinette thought as she closed her locker.
"i can't believe it! dude, she's so hot! whoever sat with her must be hot, too! they must be, like, hot sex gods!" a jock high-fived his friend.
"hell yeah man!"
"ew." marinette shuddered at the thought, 'i guess this is high school in america.'
  ☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎
".... have a good rest of your day!" the english teacher, mrs. samantha, waved.
so far, she was hands down marinette's favorite teacher. unlike her other teachers, she enjoyed what she did, and you can tell how she teaches.
as marinette walked out of the school, she noticed the ran has stopped and spotted delilah, walking over to the tall girl, "hey, delilah!" she called out, happily skipped over to her.
delilah blushed and turned around to see her, "hello, marinette."
"i was meaning to ask you at lunch, but can i have your number. your kinda my first friend here, and my only friend." she mumbled the end, which delilah caught and frowned.
"sure." delilah replied shortly, giving marinette her phone. 'thank god you said that.'
i'm reality, delilah wanted  to asker get for her number at lunch, but she was to nervous to ask, (un)fortunately, the bell rang right before she could ask.
"great! i'll see you later! my car is that way!" marinette said, pointing to the student parking section.
waving goodbye, she walked towards her car, smiling knowing she achieved something.
☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎
"harley! i'm home!" marinette yelled as she got out of the apartment's elevator. bud and lou ran as fast as they could to her, causing her to fall on the ground.
"hey puddin! how was your day?" harleen quinzel, better known as harley, asked her unofficial daughter.
harley and her girlfriend, pamela isley, better known as poison ivy, took her in during the summer, and they've grown attached to the young bluenette.
marinette's parents, tom dupain and sabine cheng, allegedly did some shady stuff the help their business grow faster, causing them to go to court, ultimately landing them 25 years in prison.
on top of that, marinette was getting bullied in paris because of all of the problems in her family, so the judge decided to send her to a better home, and harley and ivy just so happened to be the best pick for her.
harley and ivy worked hard to get their records clean from all the bad things they've done in the past, it took them months to do it, but once they did, they were pleased with marinette.
"it was good." marinette said, getting up and putting her stuff down on the floor, taking off her shoes, some things die hard.
"that's good to hear! meets any new friends?" harley asked the girl.
"yeah." marientte replied, "delilah wayne-"
"delilah wayne?!" harley asked jumping up to look at marientte with wide eyes.
"well, yeah-" marientte was cut of again.
"oh my marbles! mari, just wait 'till i tell pam! our little girl melted the ice princess!" harley jumped around marinette.
"she's not as cold as people say she is." marientte said, trying to defend her friend.
'why did that hurt to say she was my friend, i just met her?'
"yes, yes! but still you made a friend! good job!" harley said, hugging the life out of the shorter girl.
"pam should be home at any minute, so can you make us some spinach puff pastry rolls again? they were so good!" harley started pushing marientte twoards the kitchen, not giving her a chance to speak.
"okay, 5 spinach puffs on the way!"
'gosh, how did i get so lucky'
☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎☁︎︎
once marinette settled down in bed, she took out her phone and texted delilah.
marientte: hey delilah! it's marientte! i just wanted to tell you good night and i'll see you tomorrow! 😁
delilah: hello marientte, good night to you as well.
little did marinette know, across town, in the wayne manner, there was a girl in her bed, screaming into her pillow.
marientte put down her phone with a sigh, going to peaceful sleep, mullo right beside her, with a large smile.

Moonville Tunnel
Deep in the backwoods of Vinton County stands the Moonville Tunnel, a relic from a era long gone. The town sprang up when the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad was built through the coal- and iron-rich woods of southeastern Ohio, in 1856. At its peak in the 1870s, Moonville boasted a population of more than one hundred-almost exclusively miners and their families. The Moonville Tunnel marked the entrance to the town.
Moonville wasn’t around long, maybe thirty years or so, before modern advances made such small mining towns obsolete. By the time the 1900s rolled around, it was all but abandoned. Many of the residents are buried just west of town, in an old cemetery at the top of a steep, winding gravel road. Both the cemetery and the tunnel are about as far from civilization as it is possible to get in this state-a full hour’s drive from Nelsonville or Athens, buried in the Wayne National Forest along Raccoon Creek.
Today all that remains of the town of Moonville is the small cemetery and the tunnel. Of the two, it seems that ghosts have chosen the tunnel as their territory. The only thing that’s consistent about the hauntings there is that they are said to be the result of someone who was killed inside. But the Moonville Tunnel legend is actually based on historical fact. Sort of.
In one version, the victim is simply someone who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes the person is a man who is somehow connected to the railroad, such as a conductor or an engineer. In other retellings of the legend, the person is someone from the town of Moonville who got caught on the tracks and was unable to avoid an oncoming train. In other instances, this person is a woman, and sometimes the woman is said to be pregnant. And if all of those variations aren’t enough to make your head spin, then how about the only version that names the person who is hit by the train? He is said to be Rastus Dexter, who is described as an eight-foot-tall African American.
The newspaper article reporting the incident, in the McArthur Democrat of March 21, 1859, gives the real story, along with a warning about drinking too much while riding a speeding train.
A brakesman on the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad fell from the cars near Cincinnati Furnace, on last Tuesday March 29, 1859 and was fatally injured. . . . He was taken on the train to Hamden and Doctors Wolf and Rannells sent for to perform amputation, but the prostration of the vital energies was too great to attempt it. The man is probably dead ere this. The accident resulted from a too free use of liquor.
The most complete version of the Moonville Tunnel legend is the one regarding an epidemic that swept through the town. As a result, the entire community was quarantined and trains were ordered not to stop there anymore. Low on supplies, the stranded townsfolk came up with a plan: They would send one of their own through the tunnel to the outskirts of town with a lantern. The idea was that as the train approached, the man would signal for help with his lantern. Since he would be standing outside the town’s limits, the thought was that the conductor would stop the train and help.
A volunteer was selected, and it was decided that he would set out the following day. However, the next day, the man got off to a late start (because he either overslept or was hung over), and as he neared the tunnel, he heard the train approaching. Knowing the conductor would never stop for him unless he was on the other side of the tunnel, outside the town’s limits, the man began sprinting through the darkness, waving his lantern wildly. Sadly, he never made it through the tunnel but was struck and killed instantly by the oncoming train. That may be why people today report seeing a ghostly lantern trailing along the track bed around the old tunnel.
One account of the ghost’s habit of stopping trains appeared in the Chillicothe Gazette on February 17, 1895:
The Ghost of Moonville, after an absence of one year, has returned and is again at its old pranks, haunting B&O S-W freight trains and their crews. It appeared Monday night in front of fast freight No. 99 west bound, just east of the cut which os one half mile the other side of Moonville at the point where Engineer Lawhead lost his life and Engineer Walters was injured. The ghost, attired in a pure white robe, carried a lantern. It had a flowing white beard, its eyes glistened like balls of fire and surrounding it was a halo of twinkling stars. When the train stopped, the ghost stepped off the track and disappeared into the rocks nearby.
A more recent sighting, from the Athens Messenger in 1993, tells the story of an Ohio University student named David and his three friends, who went to Moonville to swim in Raccoon Creek. On their way back through the tunnel, they saw a light halfway down and split into two groups. Two of the boys headed toward the light, then came running back out of the tunnel, screaming, “There’s no one carrying the light!” David went to check it out for himself. “He wasn’t kidding,” he reported. “It was just a swinging light with no one holding it!”
In the years following the disintegration of Moonville, everything disappeared but the tunnel-and the legends. After the boarding house and miners’ shacks were left to wash away, the railroad took down the train platform. Trains continue to run until the late ‘80s, when the rails and crossties were stripped. Finally, the trestle over Raccoon Creek came down, making direct access rocks when the water is low. A ruler-straight gravel path through the forest and the ghostly pillars of the trestle supports in the creek are the only remnants of the line once known as the loneliest stretch of track between Marietta and Cincinnati.
Despite the difficulty of reaching it, the Moonville Tunnel is something of an alternative tourist attraction. Groups regularly visit, and college students from Athens stage a Halloween party there every year. Charred fire pits and beer cans are a regular sight, and the graffiti that covers the inner walls get photographed almost as much as the distinctive openings, each with MOONVILLE written above its arch protruding brick letters.
Today, as over a century ago, bizarre occurrences are reported on the old stretch of B&O tracks with amazing regularity. Is the lantern-waving spook just another bit of railroad folklore, or does something supernatural actually inhabit the legendary Moonville Tunnel?
Watch Out for the Phantom Behind You
In the fall of last year, a bunch of my friends and I went out to investigate the Moonville Tunnel. My dad worked on the railroad in his earlier years and was telling me about the story long before I even thought about going.
On our first few visits out to the tunnel, nothing was out of the  ordinary. The next time we visited was a totally different story! We had already walked through the tunnel and were on the other side, walking down the path. Nobody wanted to walk in the back, so I, being the brave soul I am, decided to bring up the rear of the line, as long as one of my buddies walked beside me. So he and I were walking behind the rest of our friends when he jokingly told me to watch out for the guy behind me. We both just laughed, but I, of course, kept looking over my shoulder for the “guy” following me. Of course, nothing was there.
Above five or six minutes later, I turned my head around to look behind me when I saw the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced in my entire life: There was a figure following us, only it definitely didn’t look human. I didn’t know if I was seeing something or not. I tried to say something to my friend, and I couldn’t even talk. I simply grabbed him and turned him around. As soon as I saw the look on his face, I knew I could nearly knocking everybody down in our path. When we looked back, the figure appeared to be getting closer to us. We kept running, and the next time we checked for the ghost, nothing was there.
I am certain that whatever it is in Moonville, it is still roaming the woods behind the tunnel. I haven’t experienced the headless man in the tunnel, but I surely experienced something that wasn’t of the norm. -Letter via e-mail
Lantern Man Still Swinging at Moonville
All of the men in my family get together every year and go deer hunting in Moonville. We camped on the rail bed on the other side of the trestle. On the third night I was there, we were all hanging out and just goofing off. I decided I was going to go and scot for deer tracks. I got about fifteen feet from the tunnel when I saw a light swinging back and forth inside. I thought it was just one of my family members playing a trick on me, so I shined my flashlight down the tunnel, and all I saw was a light being swung by something that looked like a man, but it wasn’t a real man because I could see right through him. Then he walked to the opposite side of the tunnel and just vanished. -Anonymous
Peekaboo
In 1984, I was working at the Zaleski CCC Camp. On the weekends, we were more or less free to do as we pleased. Well, one night a couple of guys (whom I shall refer to as RZ and RM) and I wanted to do something. We had no money, and things were looking grim. Then, one of the R’s says, “Hey, let’s go to the Moonville Tunnel and see a ghost!” I had no idea what they were talking about, but after a brief explanation, I was in. We packed up our backpacks, jumped into RM’s Pinto and off we went.
When we got to the tracks and parked, there were no other cars around. After a short walk in the dark (it was around midnight-I hate to be so melodramatic), we were at the front of the tunnel. We looked around, listened closely, and saw no one, heard nothing but regular night sounds that one would associate with the woods. When we got to the tunnel, there was no one else there. We felt absolutely nothing that would lead us to believe there was someone hiding there waiting on us.
About halfway through the tunnel, RZ and RM started running. I thought maybe they were screwing with me, and I ran to catch up. At this point, I noticed they were looking over their shoulders as they ran. This was curious, because we were in a tunnel at midnight, and a few seconds earlier, all I could see was the opening at the end. I looked back and saw a train entering the tunnel behind us. I ran like hell, but something wasn’t right! We got to the other side and jumped off the tracks to the side of the tunnel. Then I realized what was wrong: no choo-choo noises.
“Did you see that?” they yelled. Yes, I had, and now I looked back down the tunnel and I saw it again-a light in the mouth of the far end of the tunnel. It looked like a train light just entered the tunnel. I quickly ducked back, then peeked again again-still there! Duck back again, peek again. Gone! It was just gone!
When we got the courage up to walk back through the tunnel, everything was normal. No more mysterious appearances, no more lights, no sounds of local rednecks laughing in the brush.
What did we that night? I don’t believe in ghosts, ESP, UFOs, or much of anything else, for that matter. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that some local high school kids happened to go to the tunnel that night with a spotlight to see if they could scare someone, and we happened along.
It would be difficult to hide while we walked past, show the light, and get away before we came back without laughing out loud. The whole thing happened in a few minutes. Still, this seems the only reasonable explanation. -Letter via e-mail
Cult Sacrifice at the Tunnel
I have visited the Moonville Tunnel many times and even camped overnight with friends. I’ve never seen the swinging lantern or any ghostlike creatures, but I have witnessed some type of cult activity.
It was summer of 1992 the first time I saw it. A few friends of mine were going to party and showed a couple of our friends from Athens the tunnel. We walked in from Mineral, and as we came closer, I could see the tunnel had a fire built in it, so we were going to sneak up on who we figured were probably a group of teenagers. But as we were sneaking up the old tracks, we could hear chanting. We stayed hidden in the brush and watched the scariest thing I have ever seen.
There were seven men, all in what looked like hooded bathrobes-one of them was in a red robe. They kept chanting, and they opened what looked like a burlap sack and pulled either a small goat or a lamb out of it (alive; we could hear it bah-ing), and they cut it open down the middle while it was alive. We freaked and creeped as quietly as possible back until we could run. We decided to run to the first trestle, where we would have to cross the creek. We ran there, crossed, and went home. That was it for us. -Letter via e-mail

your biggest Notp's?
Don't think I've ever despised a ship with a burning passion. Bella Swan/Edward Cullen came kind of close to that, I guess, but this was an instance of me following the anti-Twilight bandwagon back then when my teenage self "wusn't like other gurls, gosh darn it!"
I'm no longer a Twilight-anti.
Anyhow, I usually find my least favorite ships more annoying than anything else. Here are my current, least favorite pairings:
Anakin Skywalker/Obi-Wan Kenobi: Doesn't work for me. Obi-Wan is Anakin's dad/brother, and Anakin loves Padme like a human swan. Also, annoying.
Zuko/Sokka: Annoying.
Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes: Annoying.
Akito Sohma/Shigure Sohma: I wish she had ended up with someone else. Annoying.
Harvey Dent/Bruce Wayne: Annoying.
Marietta Danver/Derek Hawke: Ugh. What a poorly-written couple.
Joker/Harley Quinn: I feel bad for Harley.
Odd Della Robbia/Aelita Schaeffer: Annoying
