One little change in the Japanese dub compared to the English version is right after Kamek tells the prisoners that they're going to be sacrificed...

Luigi doesn't say "Mario." He says "Kowai yo, Niisan" which I believe translates to "I'm scared, Big Brother."

Which means he speaks out loud as if he's talking to his brother as a method of calming himself down.

Thing I wish was explored more in fic/fanart: Luigi feeling guilt over revealing Mario's name, even if under duress. Once the crisis is over and Luigi has time to think, he realizes how that slip-up could have gotten Mario killed. Him feeling like, had they swapped places, Mario never would have revealed Luigi's name.

This feeds into my headcanon that after he was rescued, Luigi didn't ever talk about his time in The Dark Lands, and certainly didn't talk about the interrogation. Not only is there a lot of fear connected to those memories, but a lot of guilt and shame, not just because of what his brother went through to save him, but the fact that he didn't put up a fight against The Shy Guys and... most of all... the fact that he gave in and cracked during Bowser's interrogation. Like you said, he feels like if they'd swapped places Mario wouldn't have been so "weak."

It is definitely something I'd like to see explored further.

Bowuigi Soulmate AU - Princess Luigi Fan Art - Movie Canon Divergence/AU

Luigi who's never really searched for his soulmate, for a lot reasons, not the least of which being his off-putting soulmark. Bowser's who's given up on ever meeting his soulmate, but can't ever truly forget about it, even when chasing after Peach; the idea of true love is all he really wants.

An alternate universe where Mario doesn't catch up to Luigi, and has no idea where his brother may have landed, or even if they are in the same world.

Both Luigi and Bowser learn and grow together. Bower wants to marry and tart a family. Luigi wants that too, but cannot settle with no news of his brother, who he has absolute faith is searching for him.

Mario is searching, with the support and understanding of his soulmate, Peach. He is making little headway, however. Probably because Bowser is running interference.

But alas, the Mario brothers are meant to reunite, and when Luigi figures out what Bowser was hiding from him, it puts a strain on their relationship. Luigi wants to take a break and bond with his brother, maybe even see the world beyond the Koopa Kingdom.

Bowser, however, is not interested in being separated from his soulmate, even temporarily, and decides that they will be getting marries sooner rather than later, if Luigi wants his brother happy with his soulmate instead of living in their dungeon.
