The Blob is back in this horrific tale about a vile, malignant life-form that crashes to Earth in a cozy, rural American town called Arborville. Untroubled by conscience or intellect, the Blob does only one thing – and it does it well. It eats anything and everything that moves: men, women, and children. And tonight it wants to swallow the town of Arborville.
Pre-order The Blob.

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!
— Joanna Newsom for The New Statesman, 2008

Five Guys was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell. Jerry and the couple's sons Jim, Matt, Chad, and Ben were the original "Five Guys". The Murrells had a fifth son, Tyler, two years later. Today, all five sons, the current "Five Guys", are involved in the business: Matt and Jim travel the United States visiting stores, Chad oversees training, Ben selects the franchisees, and Tyler runs the bakery.
The first Five Guys was in Arlington's Westmont Shopping Center. Buns were baked in the same center by Brenner's Bakery. This location closed, in favor of another in Alexandria, Virginia, at the intersection of King and North Beauregard Streets, which closed on September 21, 2013.
More followed in Old Town Alexandria and Springfield, Virginia, making five locations open by 2001. Their success encouraged the Murrells to franchise their concept the following year, engaging Fransmart, a franchise sales organization. Former American football player Mark Moseley, who had gone to work for Fransmart after his football career, played a key role in Five Guys' expansion and went on to become the company's director of franchise development after it ended its business relationship with Fransmart. In early 2003, the chain began franchising, opening the doors to rapid expansion which caught the attention of national restaurant trade organizations and the national press. The expansion started in Virginia and Maryland, and by the end of 2004, over 300 units were in development through the Northeast. Over the next few years, the chain rapidly expanded across the entire United States and into Canada, reaching over 1,000 locations by 2012.[needs update][citation needed]
The first location outside North America opened in the United Kingdom in July 2013, in London on Long Acre in Covent Garden. The chain now has more than 150 restaurants in the UK. Five Guys also has locations in the Middle East and has continued to expand in Europe. In late 2017, Five Guys opened its first restaurants in Germany, with a branch in Frankfurt and another in Essen.
Five Guys, one of the top three burgers in the U.S., opened its first Korean store in Gangnam, Seoul, at 11 a.m. on June 26, 2023 with a countdown shout. As of 2024, there are a total of four branches in Seoul.
Five Guys Enterprises has several affiliated companies that are not part of a consolidated group, but are under common ownership. Five Guys Operations was founded in 2012, Five Guys Holdings was founded in 2007. Five Guys Foods UK Limited was incorporated on March 12, 2013. FGE International, FGO International BV, and FG Coöperatief U.A. are based in Amsterdam. FGH International C.V. is located in Bermuda.
Five Guys had a 39,900 square feet (3,710 m2) headquarters in Lorton, Virginia, overlooking the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers, that was specially designed to convey the corporate brand. According to the architect, "The lobby mimics the typical Five Guys restaurant with red and white tile, tall tables, Freestyle Coke machine and signature peanut boxes." In 2023, they moved their headquarters to a new location in Alexandria, Virginia.
On September 24, 2020, the first Five Guys location with a drive-through window opened in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. The franchisee retained it from the former business in the building in light of COVID-19 pandemic safe practices.
In September 2021, Five Guys opened their first location in Australia. The chain also has plans to expand into New Zealand. In November 2022, Five Guys announced the relocation of their headquarters to the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.
Tumblr media
Five Guys has received numerous awards in D.C. area publications, including "Number 1 Burger" by Washingtonian Magazine for seven years.[citation needed] The former US President Barack Obama is reportedly a fan, buying lunch for himself and his colleagues at the Washington Five Guys branch in 2011.

New Year's Eve Favorites
New Year’s Eve rolls around just six days after Christmas, when many are still knee-deep in wrapping paper and ribbon. It’s easy to just roll New Year’s into the Christmas celebrations, doing little to mark the moment beyond watching the ball drop at midnight. But there are plenty of films centered around New Year’s that deserve their own holiday film recognition.
Tumblr media
Updated: December 31, 2023
My Favorites…
About Time (2013) - This Richard Curtis written/directed movie is one of my all-time favorite films, period. But it all starts with a life-changing New Year’s Eve party.
When Harry Met Sally (1989) - Often considered a bit of a stealth Christmas movie, this rom-com classic ends, unforgettably, on New Year’s Eve.
The Cutting Edge (1992) - It’s hard to call this movie about a former hockey star turned Olympic figure skater “good,” in any objective sense, but that doesn’t keep me from loving it wholeheartedly. Even if you haven’t seen it 50 or so times, like I have, I doubt anyone can forget that moment when sparks fly, literally, between Doug Dorsey and Kate Moseley at a New Year’s Eve party, when they twirl into each other’s arms with sparklers at the stroke of midnight (sigh).
Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) - Not specifically holiday-themed but Brittany makes a pretty perfect New Year’s watch. Funny, inspirational and all about self-improvement. Absolutely adore this one.
About a Boy (2002) - While it also features some sweet Christmas scenes, Hugh Grant and Rachel Weisz meet cute on New Year’s Eve.
The Poseidon Adventure (1972) - The movie that defined 1970s disaster movies remains good, cheese-tastic New Year’s fun. I remember the first time I saw this one as a kid, on cable, on New Year’s Eve. A group of New Year’s revelers trying to escape a cruise ship that flips over? Indelible.
Starstruck (2021, HBO Max) - Think of season one of this 6-episode British series, written and created by a Kiwi, as a three hour rom-com that begins on New Year’s Eve and ends the following Christmas. A delightful watch any time, but extra-special during the holiday season.
Peter’s Friends (1992) - This criminally under-rated British ensemble  comedy features a host of stars—Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh and Rita Rudner—gathering to celebrate the New Year at their college chum’s English estate.
Something from Tiffany’s (2022, Prime Video) - This holiday romance centers around Christmas gifts from the famous jewelry being inadvertently swapped, but most of the movie takes place between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve when everything comes to a head.
Plane (2023) - If this New Year’s Eve-set action movie leaned in just a bit more to its New Year celebration, it could reach Die Hard-style holiday classic status. While the New Year’s element doesn’t factor much after the first 15 minutes, this is a well-made, well-acted and well-paced watch. Honestly, some of Gerard Butler’s best work which, yeah, isn’t the highest bar, but Plane is a super entertaining action-disaster pic that, forgive the pun, is a lot more grounded than expected.
Other People (2016) - This very well told story about losing a loved one to cancer is funnier than you’d think, given the subject matter, has an amazing cast, led by Jesse Plemons, Molly Shannon and Bradley Whitford, and starts off with a New Year’s Eve bash.
About Fate (2022) - This American remake of a Soviet-era New Year classic, 1976′s The Irony of Fate, available to legally watch on YouTube via Mosfilm, stars Emma Roberts and Thomas Mann as recent (sort of) dumpees who meet cute due to alcohol-induced architectural confusion, and end up attending a New Year’s Eve wedding together with chaotic results, with the whole story playing out from December 30th to January 1st.
Fruitvale Station (2013) - This gut-wrenching Ryan Coogler feature directorial debut should have won Michael B. Jordan an Oscar. Set entirely on New Year’s Eve, it’s the devastating true story of the last day of Oscar Grant’s life.
Phineas and Ferb: Happy New Year (2012, Disney Channel) - This fun episode of the crazy kids’ series works as a stand-alone New Year’s special that’s better than most.
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: Two Doors Down (2019, Netflix) - Cheese-y, feel-good, queer holiday romance that ends with Dolly Parton singing Auld Lang Syne. What more could you want?
An Affair to Remember (1957) - This Cary Grant-Deborah Kerr classic is basically the third lead in Sleepless in Seattle, but it is a New Year’s classic in its own right, as Kerr and Grant’s characters vow to meet on the top of the Empire State building after an epic New Year’s Kiss.
Entrapment (1999) - There’s just something about thieves and New Year’s, I guess, as the final job in this Sean Connery-Catherine Zeta Jones film is set on Y2K. There’s also a good bit of bonus millenium Christmas content.
Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne (2021, Apple TV+) - A kid-friendly New Year's Eve watch the whole family can enjoy. Apple is doing a fantastic job of preserving the Peanuts legacy with their new holiday specials.
Holiday (1938) - Another Cary Grant classic that features a memorable New Year’s Eve. Even though the “holiday” of the title refers to a vacation, it’s on New Year’s Eve that sparks really begin to fly between Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Trouble is, she’s his fiancee’s sister.
After the Thin Man (1936) - This sequel to the runaway 1934 hit kicks off on New Year’s Eve, with James Stewart joining Myrna Loy and William Powell for more mystery solving slapstick antics.
Red, White & Royal Blue (2023, Prime Video) - Based on the book of the same name, this delightful rom-com’s President’s son-meets-Prince romance really gets going at a New Year’s Eve party, following fitful Thanksgiving-Christmas flirting via text.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss (2007) - This independent dark-ish, rom-com can be a little hard to find, but it’s worth seeking out. Two lonely people looking for hope and love by New Year’s Eve.
Ghostbusters II (1989) - Definitely less than the original classic, this holiday-set sequel concludes with New Yorker’s saving the city via a chorus of Auld Lang Syne, with an assist from Lady Liberty.
Boogie Nights (1997) - Definitely not an uplifting New Year’s Eve watch, this Paul Thomas Anderson classic does feature outstanding performances and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve party appearance by William H Macy.
Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (1976, ABC) - Not the only animated New Year’s special, but easily the most memorable, this Rankin-Bass classic has Rudolph teaming up with Baby New Year and Father Time to save the holiday.
Tumblr media
More to Explore…
If my New Year’s picks don’t make your ball drop, there’s plenty more movies/specials set around welcoming the new year.
Happy New Year (2014) - This bouncy, Bollywood showstopper is available on Netflix.
New Year’s Eve (2011) - This farly-cynical Garry Marshall attempt to recreate the holiday anthology magic of Love, Actuallyshouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as that film, but this mess of a movie can still be fairly good fun when watched ironically with enough wine and the right friends.
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown (1986, CBS) - Nowhere near as iconic as the 1960s Peanuts specials, this is still a solid, kid-friendly New Year’s watch.
Pete the Cat: A Groovy New Year (2017, Amazon Prime) - Hep cat animated special based on the popular children’s book character.
200 Cigarettes (1999) - Set in the 1980s, this follows a group of young New Yorkers looking for a memorable New Year’s Eve.
Snowpiercer (2013) - The Chris Evans dystopian thriller where civilization is relegated to an always moving train, strictly divided by class, and New Year’s is celebrated every time they circumnavigate the globe.
Highball (1997) - This very early, extremely low budget Noah Baumbach movie takes place over a series of holiday parties that culminates with a New Year’s Eve bash. Is it good? Well, Baumbach petitioned to have his name removed from it, so…
Waiting to Exhale (1995) - This movie about a close-knit friend group and their complicated romantic lives, based on the book by Terry McMillan, is framed by New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Four Rooms (1995) - This overly ambitious anthology, featuring four stories each written and directed by a different high profile auteur, with only one connecting character, a hotel bellman, takes place entirely on New Year’s Eve.
Ocean’s Eleven (1960) - The Rat Pack original isn’t as fun as the George Clooney-Brad Pitt remakes, but it does set its heist on New Year’s Eve.
The Sword in the Stone (1963) - This Disney animated classic’s pivotal moment—the extraction of Excalibur—occurs at the New Year’s tournament, which Arthur attends as a lowly squire.
The Godfather Part II (1972) - Fredo Corleone is handing out New Year’s party kisses in this, the only sequel to ever win the best picture Oscar.
Midnighters (2017) - When a couple accidentally hit a man with their car on New Year’s Eve, they put him in the backseat and go home to avoid the consequences.
Radio Days (1987) - This Woody Allen (yeah, I know) movie ends with the cast welcoming 1944 on a wintry New York, New Year’s Eve.
Repeat Performance (1947) - A New Year’s Eve wish to repeat the year comes true, but fixing mistakes made proves more difficult than Joan Leslie imagined.
Sunset Boulevard (1950) - The iconic tale, later turned into a Broadway musical, hinges on a New Year’s Eve party.
A Midnight Kiss (2018, Hallmark) - Carlos PenaVega helps Adelaide Kane plan a New Year’s bash.
Royal New Year’s Eve (2017, Hallmark) - Designer Jessy Schram meets her Prince at a New Year’s ball.
The Birthday Wish (2017, Hallmark) - This is another Jessy Schram-joint that starts at New Year’s and is one of the more original Hallmark movies of recent years.
A New Year’s Resolution (2021, Hallmark) - This long-delayed Aimee Teegarden and Michael Rad movie finally got an airdate in early 2021.
Midnight at the Magnolia (2020, Netflix) - Natalie Hall and Evan Williams are radio hosts who fake a romance for a New Year’s Eve live show.
A Year and Change (2015) - Bryan Greenberg topples off a roof at a New Year’s Eve party, leading him to change his life.
The Gold Rush (1925) - For those who like their New Year’s celebrations extra-classic, this iconic Charlie Chaplin outing features the Little Tramp all alone on New Year’s Eve.
Two Lovers (2008) - This little-known Joaquin Phoenix-Gwenyth Paltrow movie culminates on New Year’s Eve.
Strange Days (1995) - Kathryn Bigelow’s sci-fi/romance prominently features a plot pivotal New Year’s Eve party.
Hudsucker Proxy (1994) - Some have called this critically-panned Tim Robbins movie It’s a Wonderful Life for New Year’s Eve. It even features Charles Durning as an angel.
Poseidon (2006) - This overly serious remake was a box office flop, but it’s still a big, dumb New Year’s Eve disaster flick. Just be careful it’s extra-long run time doesn’t make you miss the ball drop.
Money Train (1995) - This heist film starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson (remember when those guys were leading men and action stars?) has these former cops robbing the NYC subway on New Year’s Eve.
Are We There Yet? (2005) - Ice Cube’s original road trip comedy takes place on New Year’s Eve.
Carol (2015) - It’s a New Year’s Eve party that lets these repressed ladies first turn their passion loose.
Phantom Thread (2017) - Not mostly about the holiday, but does feature one of the most visually stunning New Year’s Eve parties ever committed to film.
New Year’s Evil (1980) - It wouldn’t be a holiday without a bad slasher film taking place on it.
Tumblr media
Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) - The ladies celebrate a very memorable New Year’s Eves in this movie, based on the HBO series.
A Frozen New Year’s Eve (2019) - Direct-to-VOD animated kids’ movie
Dr Who: The Movie (1996, BBC) - The Time Lord takes on the millennium in this made-for-TV movie.
New Year’s Day (1989) - This little known movie is David Duchovny’s first major role. He plays a man who moves to L.A. on New Year’s Eve, only to find his newly-rented apartment occupied by three women.
A Long Way Down (2014) - Four strangers meet on a rooftop on New Year’s Eve, each contemplating jumping.
Endings, Beginnings (2020) - This Shailene Woodley-starring movie features a love triangle that begins at a fateful New Year’s Eve party.
Do It Yourself, Mr. Bean (1994, ITV) - Mr. Bean plans a New Year’s bash in this ITV special.
A Month in Thailand (2012) - This Romanian film follows a man in the time between Christmas and New Year’s trying to decide if he should pursue the ex who broke his heart, or stick with his current adoring girlfriend.
The Shining (1980) - This bleak, wintery horror classic wouldn’t be the most uplifting way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, but its plot pivotal NYE party photo certainly makes it seasonally appropriate if you’re looking to scream in the New Year.
Age of Adaline (2015) - This very weird movie starring Harrison Ford and Blake Lively begins at a New Year’s Eve party, with the holiday holding other significance in the story.
New Year, New You (2018, Hulu) - New Year’s entry in the Blumhouse-produced horror, holiday anthology movie series.
What for New Year’s Eve? (2018, a.k.a. Cosa Fai a Capodanno?) - This Italian comedy-drama from writer-director Filippo Bologna recently became available in the U.S. and explores what happens when a group of friends decide to switch partners at a New Year’s Eve party.

Christmas ➜ New Year’s
And don’t forget to consider these movies that carry over from Christmas to New Year’s, giving us a solid dose of both holidays.
Rent (2005)
Bridget Jones’s Diary* (2001)
Last Holiday** (2006)
Holiday Inn (1942)
The Holiday*** (2006)
Sleepless In Seattle (1993)
Trading Places (1983)
While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Bachelor Mother (1939)
Bundle of Joy (1956, a remake of Bachelor Mother)
The Apartment (1960)
A Christmas Prince (2017, Netflix)
Holidate***** (2020, Netflix)
Starstruck***** (2021, HBO Max)
About Fate (2022)
Ask Me to Dance (2022)
Something from Tiffany’s (2022, Prime Video)
*If I hadn’t already dubbed Bridget my all-time favorite stealth Christmas movie, I’d have put it on my New Year’s list for sure, probably at No. 1, since Jones’s New Year’s resolutions bookend the film, which actually starts on New Year’s Day (when she meets Darcy at her mom’s annual turkey curry buffet). Really, it’s a pretty perfect New Year’s watch and an annual in between Christmas and New Year’s must-view in our house.
**As with Bridget, Last Holiday would be at or near the top of my New Year’s favorites, if I hadn’t already dubbed it one of my favorite Christmas films. But, while it takes place over the entire Christmas season, much more happens on New Year’s in this Queen Latifah classic, than Christmas, and it’s a great way to spend any New Year’s Eve.
***And the same goes for The Holiday, which is mostly Christmas, but culminates on New Year’s Eve, the only part of the film where all four leads share a scene.
****Yet another that would be at or near the top of my New Year’s list, if it weren’t already on my Top 25 Stealth Christmas Movies list, as the New Year’s Eve in Holidate was among its best, and most memorable, moments.
*****Starstruck takes the opposite tack of the rest of this list, starting on New Year’s Eve and ending at Christmas.

TV Series Standouts
While Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed episodes of TV series abound, the timing of New Year’s, coming when most shows are on hiatus, means there are only a few truly iconic television episodes devoted to this holiday. A handful worth noting…
Mum: December (2016, BBC, series 1)
Absolutely Fabulous: Happy New Year (1995, BBC, series 3)
Dr. Who: Resolution (2019, BBC)
On My Block: Chapter Eleven (2019, Netflix)
My So-Called Life: Resolutions (1995, ABC, season 1)
The X-Files: Millennium (1999, FOX, season 7)
Futurama: Space Pilot 3000 (1999, FOX, pilot) - Like Matt Groening’s Christmas-themed Simpson’s pilot, this series intro could also be seen as a New Year’s Eve holiday special.)
That ‘70s Show: Finale (2006, FOX, season 8) -Though it aired in May, this series ender was set on New Year’s Eve 1979
Fraiser: RDWRER (2000, NBC, season 7)
30 Rock: Klaus and Greta (2010, NBC, season 4)
Friends: The One with the Monkey (1994, NBC, season 1)
Friends: The One With All the Resolutions (1999, NBC, season 5)
Friends: The One with the Routine (1999, NBC, season 6)
Modern Family: New Year’s Eve (2013, ABC, season 4)
How I Met Your Mother: The Limo (2005, CBS, season 1)
How I Met Your Mother: Tailgate (2012, CBS, season 7)
The Office: Ultimatum (2011, NBC, season 7)
Seinfeld: The Millennium (1997, NBC, season 8) - This one actually doesn’t take place at New Year’s, but is about a New Year’s Eve party

when heaven stole his faith and when hell broke his spirit, the earth showed him kindness. aka: the hunter to psychic to witch pipeline
Tumblr media
Sam wasn't sure when it had started, perhaps in his early childhood or perhaps when he had been raised from hell and crawled through the topsoil, gasping for air as his lungs drew their first ragged breath.
And where he walked, flowers followed.
Sam had spent his early life thinking himself an outsider, with powers he could never hope to understand and a father who would rather cure than just help him. It wasn't until his twenties that he learned the truth: that he wasn't a monster and that he wasn't living alone in a world where people's thoughts and feelings would latch unto him like a fly to honey. He was just clairvoyant; a notion he thought laughable until an old family friend, Missouri Moseley, had put it into layman's terms. There no crystal balls nor tarot cards, she said folks like them just had an extra eye to view the world or a secret tongue that held a language only few could speak. Their conversation had sparked some sort of pride in him—a courage that made him value his powers and therefore, himself—so after, when he learned those powers might have been a gift from a high demon, he was at a loss.
His gift became a curse.
And then he died, along with the demon who had tainted him. Though, of course, not for long; the earth had spit him out just as quickly as it had swallowed him. And what surprised Sam more than the simple act of being alive, was that he could still feel all the life around him. After years of believing his abilities to be a curse again, they suddenly weren't, and the feeling of floating—untethered—was gone as he could finally put his feet to the ground and feel all the roots that connected him to his family and to the little boy who had grown up convinced he had none. The demon was dead and his powers had always been his own.
Sam's interest in magic had only grown from there. It started off small, casting protection wards to aide him and his brother on hunts or crafting tonics to heal a werewolf's bite or vampire's curse. Though, despite what most assumed, Sam had no internal magic to claim his own. His psychic abilities didn't translate into conjuring or illusions, he had to use bloody and tangible spells to get the job done, with handfuls of dirt and worms, burnt sage, and plucked feathers. It was messy, but it made him view the natural world in a way he never had before (and it all made for a rather interesting collection). He was good at magic, a skill that didn't go unnoticed for long.
Rowena MacLeod was an ancient witch, one who had outlived several of her covens and survived dozens of massacres. She radiated magic just as easily as she breathed, and she saw potential in Sam. She goaded him to expand his views on witchcraft; at first, it was subtle, then not so much as he started toting around a spellbook as commonly as he would a wallet.
And then Rowena died. She had left all her knowledge, tombs, collections, plants thought to be long extinct, all of it had gone to Sam because she thought him a proper witch.
Her death was painful and Sam spent months wallowing in it; the mourning would have lasted far longer too had he not noticed the petals on her flowers starting to wilt. He wasn't much of a gardener, but he had enough outdoor space to pretend he was and he planted her strange assortment of bulbs and herbs into the ground, marking them as his shrine to her, his teacher.
And then they grew. The flowers blossomed within days and the herbs gathered bees and butterflies who would linger until the sun went down. It was an unexplainable feeling, but Sam could feel it was the earth saying thank you. The next few days—months—after that went by in a flurry of reading and note taking. Sam had been a magic user for years, but he had never wholly realized just where all that magic had come from, it was gifts from the earth. He had been existing in a symbiotic relationship of taking and giving for years without ever knowing. So, he said sorry and made a promise to do better.
Sam expanded the garden beyond Rowena's patch, he encouraged fungi to grow over the many graves he passed, his home became a safe-heaven for woodland creatures, so much so that the same ones kept coming back season after season. And when he took, he made sure to give back twice as much, one to fill in the missing piece, and one as a thank you.
After all he'd been through, Sam wouldn't consider himself religious, there were no gods nor deities to which he could worship and ask protection or find comfort, but the earth was sanctuary enough.

SoundCamp: Reveil 10
Tumblr media
At daybreak tomorrow, I'll be once again joining the programme of Reveil 10: a 24+1 hour global stream following the Dawn Chorus around the planet.
This year marks a special occasion, since this is Reveil's 10th anniversary.
Reveil (2014—) is a collective production by streamers at listening points around the earth. Starting on the morning of Saturday 6 May in South London near the Greenwich Meridian, the broadcast will pick up feeds one by one, tracking the sunrise west from microphone to microphone, following the wave of intensified sound that loops the earth every 24 hours at first light. Streams come from a variety of locations, at a time of day when human sounds are relatively low, even in dense urban areas. This tends to open the sound field to a more diverse ecology than usual. The Reveil broadcast makes room by largely avoiding speech and music, gravitating to places where human and non human communities meet and soundworlds overlap. Each stream brings something different to the loop. Reveil 10 goes back to its starting point, giving attention to live sounds of places as first light reaches them.
The Reveil broadcast will be played out at Stave Hill Ecological Park in a portable auditorium by sound artist Michael Speers and architects Public Works. Swapping, streaming, assembling a collectively produced long radio form, REVEIL is a chance to gather tools and recipes for ecological radio, and listen together to acoustic commons in the making.
Reveil celebrates International Dawn Chorus Day, which has been celebrated annually on the first Sunday of May since the Urban Wildlife Trust organized the first such event in Moseley Bog, Birmingham, in 1984. Since then, it has become a global event, celebrated all over the planet.
The Reveil broadcast will be played out at Stave Hill Ecological Park in a portable auditorium by sound artist Michael Speers and architects Public Works.
Reveil 10 is produced in collaboration with the Locus Sonus soundmap, the Acoustic Commons network, the Cyberforest programme, BIOM Open Microphones, radio.earth, and others.
The Reveil 10 stream will be live mixed by Mixed by Fernando Godoy (Tsonami), Leah Barclay (Biosphere Soundscapes) and the Soundcamp cooperative, and it will be relayed by over 20 radio stations, including Wave Farm and Resonance FM/Extra.
Listen here.

Justice Dept. subpoenas Ariz., Mich., Wis. officials for Trump communications
Special counsel Jack Smith has sent grand-jury subpoenas to local officials in Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin — three states that were central to former president Donald Trump’s failed plan to stay in power following the 2020 election — seeking any and all communications with Trump, his campaign and a long list of aides and allies.
The requests for records arrived in Dane County, Wis.; Maricopa County, Ariz.; and Wayne County, Mich., late last week, and in Milwaukee on Monday, officials said. They are among the first known subpoenas issued since Smith was named last month by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the Jan. 6 Capitol attack case as well as the criminal probe of Trump’s possible mishandling of classified documents at his Florida home.
The subpoenas, at least three of which are dated Nov. 22, indicates that the Justice Department is extending its examination of the circumstances leading up to the Capitol attack to include local election officials and their potential interactions with the former president and his representatives. The virtually identical requests to Arizona and Wisconsin name Trump individually, in addition to employees, agents and attorneys for his campaign. Details of the Michigan subpoena, confirmed by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, were not immediately available.
“I’m happy to participate in this process,” said George Christenson, the Milwaukee clerk, who confirmed the subpoena in a telephone interview Tuesday and provided a copy to The Washington Post.
The subpoena asks for communication with Trump and his campaign, including several key allies.
Christenson said he is not aware of any communications with his office that have not already been made public. But he speculated that federal investigators are hunting for new details about the Trump campaign’s efforts to convene illegitimate electors in key battleground states that Joe Biden narrowly won.
Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell confirmed receiving a similar subpoena.
“I am not aware of any significant communications that have not already been made public,” said McDonell, whose county encompasses Madison, the state capital.
Fields Moseley, a spokesman for Maricopa County, said, “We have received a subpoena and will comply.”
Officials in Wayne County — home of Detroit — did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
The Justice Department’s Mar-a-Lago criminal investigation began this spring, after months of disagreement between Trump and the National Archives and Records Administration over boxes of documents that followed Trump from the White House to Mar-a-Lago, his Florida residence and private club.
Court papers say more than 300 documents marked classified were eventually recovered from Trump’s home, more than 100 of them taken during an Aug. 8 FBI search of the property. Some contained extremely sensitive government secrets.
The longer-running Jan. 6 case, meanwhile, has moved beyond the pool of people who directly took part in the bloody riot at the U.S. Capitol. For months, prosecutors have been scrutinizing the fundraising, organizing, and apocalyptic rhetoric that preceded that violent assault on the seat of government. The inquiry has also looked at failed efforts to authorize alternate slates of electors so Trump could be named the winner of the 2020 election.
Previous subpoenas, in Arizona and other battleground states targeted by Trump, have been issued to key Republican players seen as allies in his pressure campaign to reverse the results of the 2020 election. Maricopa County, the sprawling Arizona jurisdiction that is home to Phoenix and more than half the state’s voters, was among several localities on the receiving end of that pressure.
The Arizona subpoena was addressed to Maricopa County’s elections department, while the Wisconsin versions were addressed to the Milwaukee and Dane clerks. All seek communications from June 1, 2020, through Jan. 20, 2021.
The requested communications include those with Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, and other advisers, such as Boris Epshteyn. Attorneys identified include Trump campaign lawyers, such as Justin Clark and Matthew Morgan, as well as those serving in other capacities, such as John Eastman, Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Cleta Mitchell.
Those three subpoenas, while issued by Smith, were also signed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Burke.
Trump and key allies sought to avert his narrow loss in six battleground states through a lengthy pressure campaign. In Maricopa County, the pressure focused heavily on urging the GOP-controlled governing board to not certify the results.
Then-Supervisor Steve Chucri, a Republican, has said he met with Giuliani at the state Capitol in mid-to-late November 2020. In December, Giuliani tried to reach Republican supervisors Bill Gates, Jack Sellers and Clint Hickman by phone. Days later, Trump himself twice tried to speak to Hickman, then chair of the governing board.
The calls came on Dec. 31, 2020, as Hickman was at dinner with his wife and friends and again on Jan. 3, 2021, the same day The Post broke news of Trump’s conversation with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Trump had urged the Georgia election director to “find” enough votes to reverse his loss there.
Hickman, who had been told by Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward to expect outreach by Trump, let both calls go to voice mail. “Hello, sir. This is the White House operator I was calling to let you know that the President’s available to take your call if you’re free,” one voice mail said. “If you could please give us a call back, sir, that’d be great. You have a good evening.”
After the county board ultimately certified the election results, making them formal, Trump and his allies sought to discredit them by favoring what would become a months-long inspection of ballots and voting equipment ordered by the GOP-led state Senate. That haphazard review in 2021 affirmed Trump’s loss.
Some of the figures named in the subpoena were either involved in, or encouraged, that review.

✧ PERSONALITY ✧
MBTI Type: ISTJ — the logistician
⤷ ISTJs are steady, productive contributors. Although they are Introverted, ISTJs are rarely isolated; typical ISTJs know just where they belong in life, and want to understand how they can participate in established organizations and systems. They concern themselves with maintaining the social order and making sure that standards are met.
Enneagram Type: 9w1 — the dreamer
⤷ The Nine wing One type is a Nine who has many of the same features as the Type One personality. This type is hardworking, friendly, modest, and generally more serious and diligent than other Nines.
Positive Traits: Intelligent, very responsible, reliable, honest, strong-willed, dutiful, thoughtful, practical, calm, observant, organized

Description: Simon hadn’t always been such a serious young man, but a combination of a bleeding disorder and becoming an earl at the age of nine led to him gaining a very serious disposition. He had always been a responsible person, but his sense of responsibility and a misplacement of blame grew quickly. He felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, adding to the already heavy weight of survivor’s guilt he carried. In addition, Simon is intelligent, hardworking, reserved, reliable, stubborn, and kind.
Tumblr media
✧ MAGIC ✧
Wand: Simon’s wand is made of fir wood with a unicorn tail hair core and is 11 ¼ inches long with a supple flexibility.
⤷ Fir wands demanded staying power and strength of purpose in their true owners, and that they were poor tools in the hands of the changeable and indecisive. Fir wands were particularly suited to Transfiguration, and favoured owners of focused, strong-minded and, occasionally, intimidating demeanour. Fir wands were called 'the survivor's wand'.
Other Magical Abilities: Simon has an ancient healing magic that doesn’t heal his own wounds, but can heal others and lessens the impact his hemophilia has on his body.
Patronus: Saint Bernard
Patronus Memory: Christmas morning, the year before the fire and the last one Simon spent with his family
Boggart: A house fire with the voices of his family screaming at him, blaming him for everything
Riddikulus: The bonfire turns into jam and splashes all over the silhouettes of his family
Amortentia:
Simon smells like basil, petrichor, cinnamon, sandalwood, and clean laundry.
Simon smells chocolate, strawberry jam, peat, coffee, and lilies.

Age 9 to death - the twelfth Earl of Wexford
Tumblr media
✧ FAMILY ✧
Father: Harrison James Albert Battersea II, the eleventh earl of Wexford [deceased, 1845-1890]
Tumblr media
Born in 1845, Harrison James Albert Battersea II was the eleventh earl of Wexford. He became the earl at the tender age of eighteen, after his father passed away from a stroke. Pressure soon grew on Harrison to marry well and continue on the family name, while also furthering the wealth and power of the Wexford earldom. However, Harrison’s heart became set on a mysterious American woman with a small fortune. So, in 1868, Harrison married Lydia O’Dwyer. Their marriage was a true love match and they maintained a close and loving relationship for the rest of their lives. Together they had four surviving children: Harrison III, Marcus, Simon, and Hermione. Unfortunately, Harrison’s life was cut short one summer night in 1890. The family’s wing of Tyrell Castle was set on fire and the only member of the Battersea family to survive was Harrison’s youngest son, Simon.
As the third son, Simon had never been extremely close with his father. However, Harrison had always made time to spend with his youngest son. They got along quite well, and in fact, Simon and Harrison were rather similar in personality. However, Harrison could be rather protective, especially after Simon was diagnosed with hemophilia at the age of five. Despite the friction caused by that protectiveness, Simon was heartbroken by his father’s death. He misses Harrison fiercely and on bad days, he will sometimes think of all the things that he should have told Harrison when he was alive.
Faceclaim: Samuel West
Mother: Lydia Edith Battersea née O’Dwyer [deceased, 1850-1890]
Tumblr media
Born in 1850 in New York City, Lydia O’Dwyer was the youngest daughter in the pureblood O’Dwyer family. Lydia had always had a fierce independent streak, most likely due to the fact that she never displayed any signs of magic and that her family held an intense shame surrounding Lydia’s status as a squib. Thus, at the age of 16, Lydia fled the United States and landed in London. She had a small fortune hidden with her and while attempting to find the British Wizarding bank, she ended up in the stables where the earl of Wexford’s horses resided and met Harrison, the earl himself. She fell hard for Harrison, and despite the obstacles they faced, Lydia married Harrison in 1868. Their marriage was a true love match and they maintained a close and loving relationship, albeit suffering multiple mishaps in regards to childbearing. Together, they raised four surviving children: Harrison III, Marcus, Simon, and Hermione. Unfortunately, Lydia’s life was cut short in 1890 when the family’s wing of Tyrell Castle was set on fire. Lydia never did tell Harrison the truth about her family and didn’t live long enough to notice her youngest son’s signs of magic.
Simon also wasn’t overly close with his mother either. They definitely spent time together and Lydia always made sure to spend one-on-one time with her children. However, she also grew quite overprotective after Simon was diagnosed with hemophilia at the age of five and although, she never expressed any shame around her son’s disorder. He tried not to, but he started to resent his mother (and father) a little, especially when he saw what his brothers and sister were allowed to do. Simon was heartbroken by her death and on his bad days, he will think about what he should have told her when she was still alive.
Faceclaim: Laura Dern
Brother: Harrison James Albert “Harris” Battersea III [deceased, 1869-1890]
Tumblr media
Born in 1869, Harrison James Albert Battersea III, better known as Harris, was twelve years older than Simon and thus, the heir to the Wexford earldom. Harris was taught the ways of the earldom from childhood and he loved every aspect of it, eager to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He worked hard in every endeavor and took what duties he was given very seriously. However, Harris never got the opportunity to take the duties of the earldom as he was killed in the Tyrell fire in 1890.
Simon often followed his older brother around like a puppy. He deeply admired Harris and thought he knew everything. He misses Harris a lot and sometimes imagines what it would be like if Harris had actually been able to become the earl.
Faceclaim: Jeremy Irvine
Brother: Marcus Edgar Charles Battersea [deceased, 1872-1890]
Tumblr media
Born in 1872, Marcus was nine years older than Simon. As the spare and second son, Marcus was also taught the ways of the earldom, but not to the extent that Harris was. In many ways, he was the complete opposite of his two brothers. Marcus was a bit of a troublemaker and whenever possible, he took the easy path. However, he did take the role of spare seriously, even as he fled from it. He knew that his role was important, and his parents had always assured him then a replacement for Harris. Yet, Marcus never got the opportunity to try and find himself as he was killed in the Tyrell fire of 1890.
Simon might not have looked up to Marcus the same way he did Harris, but he did greatly admire his older brother. He admired how Marcus tried to make people see beyond the title, surname, and age.
Faceclaim: Callum Woodhouse
Sister: Hermione Edith Battersea [deceased, 1883-1890]
Tumblr media
Born in 1883, Hermione was two years younger than Simon. As the youngest and only daughter, Hermione was a little spoiled, especially by her father. Her favorite thing to do was dance and she loved learning all of the different dances required by a girl of her status. She even got her parents to pay for her to be given private ballet lessons when the family was in residence in either London or Dublin. Sadly, Hermione never got the opportunity to dance with anyone besides her family as she was killed in the Tyrell fire of 1890.
Simon was probably the closest to Hermione, as there’s only a two year age gap between them. He didn’t love being his sister’s dance partner, but it always meant that Simon was in good health and allowed to do more strenuous activities. He loved his little sister.

Love Interest: Nilüfer Mihrimah Sultan (@endlessly-cursed)
Tumblr media
⤷ Simon first officially met Nilüfer Sultan during their first ever flying class. However, a friendship didn’t begin to form until their fourth year, although they had been acquaintances since their first year. They didn’t truly become a couple until they had graduated from Hogwarts, though, shortly after Simon suffered an accident. They’d had a simple estrangement, after a big argument at the end of their seventh year. Simon and Nilüfer married in May of 1907.

Son: Sidney Harrison Mehmet Battersea
Hufflepuff | b. January 12, 1909
Simon has a good relationship with his eldest son. He does his best to be supportive and not show any favoritism. There is a bit of friction when it comes to the fact that Simon is the last earl of Wexford, and that Sidney spends much of his early years under the impression that he is going to inherit, not that Simon really encourages any superiority about the heir and the spare. Overall, though, they have a good relationship and Simon loves Sidney very much. He is quite proud of his eldest son.

Son: Niall Albert Selim Battersea
Slytherin | b. June 15, 1911
Simon has a good relationship with his second son. He does his best to be supportive and is quite proud of his son. He tries to replicate some of how he saw his father parent his brothers, Harris and Marcus, as they were the heir and the spare. Simon loves Niall very much and is quite proud of him and everything that he accomplishes.

Son: Louis Edgar Hamid Battersea
Gryffindor | Chaser | Demisexual | b. March 29, 1913
Simon has a good relationship with his third son. Louis is sorta similar in personality to Simon, which makes it easy to connect to his son. He loves the boy very much and he’s quite proud of his son. Simon does his best to be supportive and sort of relates to Louis’s position in the family, as he was also the third son.

Son: Oliver Marcus Erol Battersea
Ravenclaw | Seeker | Heterosexual | b. August 22, 1917
Simon has a good relationship with his youngest son. He finds it easy to get along with his youngest, who is a lot more impulsive and reckless than he ever was, because they both have a decent age gap with their brothers. Simon does tend to worry about Oliver more than he does his other three sons, but he is quite proud of Oliver and everything that his son accomplishes. He loves Oliver very much and tries his best to be supportive.

✧ OTHER RELATIONSHIPS ✧
Guardian: Horace Randolph Dormer [deceased, 1855-1900]
Born in 1855, Hoarce was one of Simon’s distant cousins. He was the son of Simon’s father, Harrison’s second cousin. The combination of growing up in relative poverty and as the spare to the Wexford earldom, Horace easily formed a sense of entitlement. He believed that he would get the Wexford earldom, a desire which led him to make some very terrible decisions that resulted in the deaths of most of the Battersea family. In 1890, he petitioned the court and was labeled the guardian of Simon, the only Battersea to survive the Tyrell Castle fire. Horace’s greed only grew, as he found that the earldom was suddenly at his fingertips and he was once again the spare. He arranged for “accidents” to befall the young earl and when those failed, heeded to doctors’ words that it was unlikely that Simon would see his thirteenth birthday. Horace grew bitter and unpleasant, when Simon passed his fourteenth birthday and given that the boy was healthier than ever. In 1900, at the age of 45, Horace passed away in an accident that was likely his own doing.
Simon never liked his cousin and guardian. The two of them were often in a stand-off and when Simon learned what Horace had done, he was horrified and wished that Horace was still alive, so he could question Horace about it.

✧ HISTORY & BACKGROUND ✧
Place of Birth: Tyrell Castle, County Wexford, Ireland
Hometown: Tyrell Castle, County Wexford, Ireland
Childhood:
Simon Percival Theodore Battersea was born on June 21, 1881 to Harrison and Lydia Battersea. He was their third child, joining elder brothers Harrison III and Marcus. Two years later, he was joined by his younger sister, Hermione. Simon always seemed to be a little bit more accident prone than his older brothers and younger sister. He bruised easily and it seemed like he was a fragile boy. These symptoms were explained when Simon was diagnosed with hemophilia at the age of five. He had tripped down the stairs and skinned his knee. When the bleeding persisted at a steady pace after thirty minutes, the doctor was called for and the hemophilia diagnosis was made. Unbeknownst to the Battersea family, Simon only had about 2% of the normal clotting factor.
Aside from being diagnosed with hemophilia, Simon had a good childhood for those first nine years of his life. Sure, his parents were a little overprotective and he wasn’t allowed to do some of the things that his brothers had been allowed to do, like riding horses. However, Simon didn’t mind that much, especially when he was allowed to roam the halls of Tyrell Castle. For his ninth birthday, Simon was allowed to pick a puppy from their carriage dog’s litter to raise and train. He chose a small male puppy which he named Ford.
Everything changed, though, one hot summer night when Simon was nine. It was a sweltering night and Simon couldn’t sleep, so he started to wander around the family’s quarters. At perhaps two am, he smelled smoke and fled the family wing. He didn’t stop running until he reached the lake and saw that the family wing of the castle had gone up in flames. He spent the remainder of the night searching for his family. Eventually, the family’s nursemaid found Simon roaming the grounds in his bathrobe and slippers. She led the boy back to the house where he was gently told that his family had perished in the fire. Simon was heartbroken and it felt like the weight of the world had been settled on his shoulders.
Shortly after the fire, Horace Dormer, a distant cousin, was named Simon’s guardian as he was still a minor. Simon and Horace did not get along. In fact, several strange occurrences befell Simon in the first two years that Horace was his guardian. However, each time Simon escaped with only a few non-serious bruises… thanks to his magic.
Hogwarts Years:
At eleven, Simon began attending Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff. Simon was a shy and cautious student. He wasn’t the most social and preferred to spend time by himself, often spending hours in the library returning correspondence with the Wexford estate’s solicitor and others. Slowly, Simon grew out of his shell and allowed people in, but he was always rather prickly and often grew tired of explaining his hemophilia to the ignorant. Among the people he let in was his future wife, Nilüfer Sultan.
Adulthood:
After graduating from Hogwarts, Simon settled fully into his role as the earl of Wexford while also navigating through the wizarding world.
At the age of 19, after a six month long legal fight, Simon emancipated himself from his guardian. Horace Dormer died two months later.
At the age of 24, Simon experienced a horrible accident. He tripped and fell down a set of marble stairs and was knocked unconscious. No one believed that Simon would survive, as he bled for hours and the doctors struggled to stem the bleeding. Simon remained unconscious for four days, before he finally awoke.
The biggest, most notable change in Simon’s adulthood came in December of 1922 when the Irish Free State was finally established. For a long time, Simon struggled with what to do. He had never felt English and despite being a peer, he had never spent much time with the English aristocracy. Eventually, he agreed that the title would end with him. His sons would be free to pursue whatever life they wanted and never feel like the eldest was better simply for being born first.
Simon also married Nilüfer in a small, yet fancy, ceremony in May of 1907, approximately a month before Simon’s twenty-sixth birthday. They had four sons together. Their eldest son, Sidney Harrison Mehmet Battersea, was born on January 12, 1909. Their second son, Niall Albert Selim Battersea, was born on June 15, 1911. Their third son, Louis Edgar Hamid Battersea, was born on March 28, 1913. Their fourth and youngest son, Oliver Marcus Erol Battersea, was born on August 22, 1917.
Old Age:
Simon spent most of his old age putting his affairs in order and spending time with his sons and grandchildren. He was a doting grandfather, who adored all of his grandchildren.
Death:
Simon passed away in 1968 at the age of 87. He suffered a bad fall and eventually bled to death in his sleep which was also accompanied by a stroke. He had lived a full life, though, and left behind a wife, four sons, and twelve grandchildren.

Trivia:
Simon has hemophilia. His case would be considered moderate in modern terminology, as he has about 2% of the normal clotting factor.
As the sole survivor of the Tyrell fire of 1890, Simon is terrified of fire. His fear of fire is one of his biggest fears, even more than most of his hemophilia related fears.
Simon was almost murdered a few times between the ages of nine and eleve, thanks to the schemes of his guardian, Hoarce Dormer. However, Simon survived each time because of his ancient healing magic.
Simon’s hemophilia begins and ends with him, as he only has sons and his hemophilia gene is carried by his X chromosome.
Simon sold Battersea House in Dublin in 1922, after the Irish War of Independence. He sold Wexford House in London in 1934. Shortly before his death in 1968, Simon donated Tyrell Castle to the Irish government to create a museum and let the funds go to helping people in need. He hadn’t lived until he castle since he was a teenager and that was the last shred of his identity as an earl.
Being an earl means that Simon has no time for another profession. He spends most of his day balancing ledgers and carrying out other duties. However, things start to change in 1922, when he’s 41. Simon still carried out his duties until his death, but the Wexford title ends with him.
Simon discovered a struggling piece of property in the English countryside in 1923. He stumbled upon it by accident and discovered that the tenants were aging and barely holding on to what they had.
Simon’s descendants include his great-grandson, Luke, and his great-great-great-granddaughter, Shreya.
