The Untrustworthy Fake: Disability Tropes
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot of Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as he limps towards a crowd using a cane. In the picture, he has a brown top hat in his hand, and he's wearing a suit with a purple jacket, multicoloured bow tie and cream coloured pants. Beside him is text that reads: "Disability Tropes, The untrustworthy Fake" /End ID]
Tell me if this sounds familiar: A new character is introduced into a story with some kind of disability - usually visible but not always. Maybe they're a seemingly harmless person in a wheelchair, maybe they're a one-legged beggar on the street, or maybe they're an elderly person with a cane and a slow, heavy limp. But at some point, it's revealed it's all a ruse! The old man with a cane "falls" forward and does a flawless summersault before energetically springing back up to his feet, the wheelchair user gets to their feet as soon as they think the other character's backs are turned, the one legged beggar's crutch is knocked out of his hand, only to have his other leg pop out of his loose-fitting tunic to catch him.
All of these are real examples. Maya and The Three introduces one of it's main protagonists, Ricco, by having him pretend to be missing a leg in order to con people (something that works on the protagonist, at least at first), Buffy The Vampire Slayer had the character Spike, pretend to be in a wheelchair, until the other characters leave and he gets up, revealing it's all a ruse and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory introduces Wonka by having him slowly limp out into the courtyard of the factory, only for his cane to get stuck, causing him to "fall" and jump back up, revealing that he's actually perfectly fine. Virtually every single major crime show in the past few decades has used this trope too, from CSI to The Mentalist, Castle, Law and Order and Monk all having at least one episode featuring it in some way. Even the kids media I grew up with isn't free from it; The Suite Life of Zack & Cody sees Zach faking being dyslexic after meeting someone who actually has the condition in the episode Smarter and Smarter and the SpongeBob SquarePants episode Krabs vs Plankton has Plankton fake needing a wheelchair (among other injuries) after falling in the Krusty Krab as a ploy to sue Mr Krabs and trick the court into giving him the Kraby Patty Formula.
No matter the genre or target audience though, one thing is consistent: this trope is used as a way to show someone is dishonest and not to be trusted. When the trope is used later in the story, it's often meant to be a big reveal, to shock the audience and make them mad that they've been duped, to show the characters and us what this person (usually a villain) is willing to stoop to. Revealing the ruse early on though is very often used to establish how sleazy or even how dangerous a character is and to tell the audience that they shouldn't trust them from the get go. Gene Wilde (The actor who first played Willy Wonka) even said in several interviews that this was his intent for Wonka's character. He even went so far as to tell the director of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that he wouldn't do the film without that scene because of how strongly he felt this trope was needed to lay the foundations for Wonka's questionable intentions and motivations. His exact words are: "...but I wouldn't have done the film if they didn't let me come out walking as a cripple and then getting my cane stuck into a cobble stone, doing a forward somersault and then bouncing up... the director said, well what do you want to do that for? and I said because from that point on, no one will know whether I'm telling the truth or lying."
There's... a lot of problems with this trope, but that quote encapsulates one of the biggest ones. whether intentionally or not, this trope ends up framing a lot of actual disabled people as deceitful, dishonest liars. Now I can already hear you all typing, What?! Cy that's ridiculous! No one is saying real disabled people are untrustworthy or lying about their disabilities, just people who are faking!
but the thing is, the things often used in this trope as "evidence" of someone faking a disability are things real disabled people do. A person standing up from their wheelchair or having scuff-marks on their shoes, like in the episode Miss Red  from The Mentalist isn't a sign they're faking, a lot of wheelchair users can stand and even walk! They're called ambulatory wheelchair users, and they might use a wheelchair because they can't walk far, they might not feel safe walking on all terrains, they might have unstable joints that makes standing for too long risky, they might have a heart condition like POTS that has a bigger impact when they stand up or any number of other reasons. Also even non-ambulatory wheelchair users will still have scuff marks from things like transferring and bumping into things (rather hilariously, even TV Tropes calls this episode out as being "BS" in it's listing for this trope, which it refers to as Obfuscating Disability). A blind beggar flinching or getting scared when you pull a gun on them isn't a sign they're faking their blindness like it is in Red Dead Redemption 2. Plenty of blind people can still see a little bit, it might only be a general sense of light and darkness, it might be exceptionally blurry or just the fuzzy outlines of shapes, or they might only be able to see something directly in front of them, all of which might still be enough to cue the person into what's happening in a situation like that. Even if it's not, the sound of you pulling your gun out or other people nearby freaking out and making noise probably would tip them off. A person needing a cane or similar mobility aid sometimes, but being able to go without briefly or do even "big movements" like Wonka's rolling somersault, doesn't mean they don't need it at all. Just like with wheelchairs, there's a lot of disabilities that require canes and similar aids some days, and not others. Some disabilities even allow people those big, often straining movements on occasion, or allow them to move without the aid for short periods of time, but not for long. Some people's disability's might even require a mobility aid like a cane as a backup, just in case something goes wrong, but that still means you need to carry it around with you, and unless it can fold down, it's easier to just use it.
Disability is a spectrum, and a lot of disabilities vary in severity and what is required of the people who have them day to day. This trope, however, helps to perpetuate the idea that someone who does any of these things (and many others) is faking, which can actively make the lives of disabled people harder and can even put them in very real danger, physically, mentally and even financially.
Just ask any ambulatory wheelchair user about how many times they've been yelled at for using accommodations they need, like disabled toilets or parking spaces. How many times they've been accused of faking and even filmed without their consent because they stood up in public, even if it was to do something like get their wheelchair unstuck or as simple as them standing to briefly reach something on a high shelf. I've caught multiple people filming me before, so have my friends and family, and it's honestly scary not knowing where those images have ended up. This doesn't just impact the person either, a friend of mine was filmed while standing up to get his daughter (who was about 4 at the time) out of the car. He was lucky to have stumbled across the video a few days later on facebook and contacted the group admins where it was posted to get it taken down, but had he not stumbled across it by chance, pictures with his home address and his car's number plate, his child's face and his face all visible would have just been floating around, all because a woman saw him stand briefly to pick up his daughter.
Many people don't stop at just saying a nasty comment or taking a photo though, a lot of people, when they suspect people are faking, will get violent. I have many friends who have been pushed, slapped in the face, spat on or had their mobility devices kicked out from under them. I've even been in a few situations myself where, had I not had people with me, I think the situation would have turned violent.
There's even been cases where those photos and videos I've mentioned before have been used against real disabled people and they've been reported to their country's welfare system as committing disability fraud. While cases like this are usually resolved *relatively* quickly, in many parts of the world, their payment will be halted while the investigation is in process, meaning they may be without any income at all because of someone else's ignorance. If you're already struggling to make ends meet (which, if you're only living off one of those payments, you probably will be), a few weeks without pay can mean the difference between having a home and being on the streets.
Not to mention that when there's so many stories about people faking a disability in the media, especially when the character is doing it to get some kind of "advantage", such as getting accommodations or some kind of disability benefit, it perpetuates the idea that people are rorting the systems put in place to help disabled people. If this idea becomes prevalent enough, the people in charge start making it harder for the people who need them to access those systems, which more often than not results in disabled people not even being able to access the very systems that are supposed to be helping them. A very, very common example of this is in education where accommodations for things like learning disabilities require you to jump through a ridiculous number of hoops, especially at higher levels, only to have some teachers and professors refuse to adhere to the adaptations anyway because they're convinced the student (and usually disabled students as a whole) is faking.
Yes, the "untrustworthy faker" is a fictional trope, and yes, it does occasionally happen in real life, but not as often as media (including things like news outlets) would have you believe. However, when the media we consume is priming people to look for signs that a disabled person is faking, it has a real impact on real disabled people's lives. "Fake-claiming" is a massive problem for people in pretty much all parts of the disabled community, and it ranges from being just annoying (e.g. such as people spamming and fake-claiming blind people online with "if you were really blind, how do you see the screen" comments) to the more serious cases I mentioned above. It's for this reason a lot of folks in the disabled community ask that people leave this trope out of their works.

this AA4 DLC slaps
(See my Non-Disbarred AA4 Phoenix redraw and my SoJ Maya in AA4 redraw)
(Full sprite below the cut)
Hey pals I'm back with another fake AA4 screenshot. Honestly, was it really that difficult just having one moment in AA4 where we see Eddy? Crying out loud lol.
Anyway, here's the next AA4 Sprite edit?... Redraw...?--and probably my favorite. Ed boy!
Tumblr media
Again, although I love Edgeworth's design in Dual Destinies, AA4 has my favorite sprite art, so I took it upon myself to draw him in the style. It was a ton of fun and a good style study.
I had a lot to look at while I worked.
Tumblr media
And for good measure, here's the three them together--as they should be. xoxo

Lost Stories 2024 New Year's Event
I got 2024 New Year's Lelouch because, after watching the event, I suspected he might mention Rolo in his lines, and he does indeed! Lelouch: Tomorrow, Nunnally, Rolo, and I are planning to spend time together as siblings, just the three of us. It feels like a dream to be able to spend time peacefully like this... As you might guess, the story of the New Year's event (not voiced, so I'll post screenshots from here on) is in fact a dream that Mario/Maya has, where, among other things, Nunnally and Rolo are both siblings to Lelouch. Although Mario/Maya's brain didn't fix Rolo's antagonistic attitude towards him/her...
Tumblr media
Rolo (to Mario): You are inconveniencing others by standing in the middle of the path like this. How about being a little more considerate?
Tumblr media
Nunnally: Oh, Rolo, come on, speaking like that again... I always tell you you shouldn't do that.
Tumblr media
Rolo: But Nunnally, this guy is the one who... Like in every other instance where Rolo and Nunnally have interacted, they address each other without suffixes, so they seem to treat each other as equals rather than one of them clearly being the older sibling. Also, Rolo referred to Mario as "koitsu", which is openly disrespectful, especially since Mario is older... The reason Mario is standing there dumbfounded is that he still hasn't realized that he's dreaming. He is confused after seeing Britannians and the Black Knights working together, and also when he meets Rolo and Nunnally with one another:
Tumblr media
Lelouch: Mm? They are my little sister and my little brother. Isn't it obvious for them to be together? Mario: Your little sister and little brother... I guess there's nothing wrong, right... Why did I think it was strange...? Sorry for saying something weird all of a sudden...
Tumblr media
Nunnally: Fufu, you're an odd one, Mario-san. (TN: Uses my username rather than Mario)
Tumblr media
Rolo: He was already odd before... Lelouch: Hahaha, you're being called out, Mario. Mario: Ahaha... You got me. Then Mario wants to understand what's going on with some new event at Ashford, but the bell indicates that they need to go to class.
Tumblr media
Lelouch (to Mario): I'll explain later. Rolo, take Nunnally to the classroom.
Tumblr media
Rolo: Yeah, got it, Brother. Let's go, Nunnally.
Tumblr media
Nunnally: Yes, please, Rolo. Brother, Mario-san, see you later.
Tumblr media
Lelouch: Yeah. See you later, you two. After this scene, the characters teach Mario about the event. It seems that there's going to be a competition to decide the future of Ashford Academy. And there are three teams, each with different members and intentions for the kind of school life Ashford Academy should promote: ・Suzaku's WHITE team (Suzaku, Nunnally, Savitri, Anya, Schnee): "Disciplined school life with a focus on morals" ・Kallen's CRIMSOM team (Kallen, Rivalz, Benio, Gino, Shirley): "Energetic school life with a focus on passion" ・Lelouch's BLACK team (Lelouch, Rolo, Ledo, Milly, Nina,): "A free school life with a focus on individuality"
They will play different games, and Mario will join a different team each round. The first round is a karuta game where you need to guess a country after hearing a hint. At first, it seems like Nunnally's team will win (but Kallen's, the team Mario is part of this round, does):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rolo: They are strong, huh? Nunnally and the others.
Lelouch: As expected of my little sister. To think that she would remember all the kaminoku... (TN: A karuta term) The next game is hagoita doubles, which is more or less similar to badminton, and where Suzaku's physical strength makes his team win (Mario was also part of the winning team this time). Rolo has to make his snarky comment against Suzaku too:
Tumblr media
Ledo: One more point and it will be match point. What could we do?
Rolo: There's no point in asking. Nothing can be done against that monster. So they apologize to Lelouch for losing, but he understands the situation:
Tumblr media
Ledo: My apologies. We couldn't win against Lord Kururugi after all.
Tumblr media
Rolo: Sorry, brother.
Tumblr media
Lelouch: It can't be helped. Kallen is about the only one who could compete head to head against Suzaku. The next game is about flying kites, and Lelouch asks Mario, who is on his team now, to control the kite.
Tumblr media
Lelouch: So I leave the 3rd event, High Altitude Kite Battle, to you.
Mario: But I'm lost… What even is that? The "High Altitude Something"…
Tumblr media
Rolo: It's the High Altitude Kite Battle. You don't even know something like that?
Mario: I don't think you'd usually know, though... Milly and Ledo explain that the objective is to cut the opponent's kite string.
Tumblr media
Mario: Ah, so it's fighting kites. (TN: "Kenkadako," which is an exist word, unlike the fancy term Lelouch used)
Tumblr media
Rolo: No. It's High Altitude Kite Battle.
Tumblr media
Mario: Why is Rolo so fixated on such a strange thing... A-anyway, in a nutshell, I have to win at the fighting kites, right? I think Rolo is being pedantic about the term just to go against Mario or maybe to defend the term Lelouch used. Maybe he's jealous because Lelouch entrusted the game to Mario? The dialogues don't point the reason out explicitly, though! By the way, it's mentioned that Milly drew the design of the kite, which is Zero's mask, and Rolo says "I also helped paint it".
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Well, since Mario wins, there's yet another tiebreaker round which involves KMFs and where everyone ends up having to work together, until Mario wakes up from the dream. I don't think the rest of Rolo's lines are all that interesting, so I'll stop the translation here. You can probably find videos of the whole event if you search for its name: 三色志開幕!~新しい朝に願いを新たに~
As I mentioned last time, Turns 12&13 should arrive in a couple weeks, and I assume that, afterwards, together with Turns 14&15, it will be the moment to release a new Rolo alt with his plugsuit version (other characters have their plugsuit version as separate units too). Hope my sakuradite is enough for then...

Month 7, day 15, more translation work done! Finished out (most of) the Athian alphabet and translated that new piece of paper I found :D
That paper is weird; the start of the article is on the right side of the paper, and is talking about a machine that crushes stuff into powder for medicine. Then about two thirds to three quarters of the way down in the left column, it turns into some kind of documentation about Autodesk Maya 2011 features compared to Autodesk Maya 2010.
I also made a discovery! Cuff's scan of the baddies gives you the monsters' names in Athian below their English name :D I bet I could also get the rest of the numerical characters by paying attention and being quick with the screenshot button when I play through memories, since those have dates in them and I've watched them switch from Athian to English.

💌 simblr asks: who‘s your favorite couple whether of your own sims or in the franchise? give us three facts about them!
I don't think I could pick a favorite, but here is the couple that stands out most to me in my most recent memory of my legacy!
Ruby Benali-Miller & Maya Holland:
Tumblr media
Ruby is from @bakersimmer's sim world and part of her Miller legacy, the sister to her generation 4 heir River Benali-Miller. Maya is from my Collector's Legacy and she was the heir of generation 10. Here's my favorite facts about these two:
1: Ruby was ALWAYS getting annoyed/mad with Maya, because Maya was always being mischievous towards her. Their relationship levels actually got somewhat low at some point in their relationship, because it caused arguments. However, they always stuck it through... Let's just say that thanks to WW, Maya always made it up to Ruby in her own special way. 😉
Tumblr media
2: Maya is definitely one of my most flawed sims and always found trouble in most situations, even if there was no trouble to begin with. However, Ruby was never afraid to tell Maya off and put her in her place. Maya didn't listen to other sims around her, but she would always listen to Ruby, even if she didn't want to admit that she was in the wrong. One of these times was when Maya's mother, Luna, came over to her apartment and Maya was lashing out at her for no apparent reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3: These two never actually got married. They got engaged as adults, and stayed engage throughout the rest of their lives. Marriage wasn't always in the plan for them and they were both very happy and content knowing that they'll always be together and didn't need to spend all their simoleons towards a wedding to prove that. Plus, Maya wouldn't have anyone to invite anyways as she had a terrible relationship with her family. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Thanks for the ask!!~ Here's some of my favorite screenshots of them just for funsies, because it shows their dynamic and how it wasn't always Maya who was brash. 😂

SCRAPPED VER1M to NEW VILESPACE (unnamed)
So I've been working on an rpgmaker project on and off since 2020, and until 2022 I'd been working on one story.
Tumblr media
The problem with that is that I was still learning the program, and that particular story had not been fleshed out and planned beforehand. So, I got very ambitious, throwing around a lot of ideas in the air and going, 'I want to put that in,' forgetting that I was working on a rather limited program that I didn't fully understand.
Since that was scrapped, I might as well tell you about it until we get to the point where I start talking about the new story. its not like its going anywhere and i don't really plan to go back to it other than to cannibalize it for ideas .
Tumblr media
"newer" screenshots of some apartments I'd been aimlessly putting together
VER1M is a story about MAYA, who awakens with large gaps in their memory. What seemed like a few away from home had actually been weeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the story goes on Maya learns that "versions" of themself had been running around the city of CONTORT, causing chaos. "Our" Maya wouldn't know anything about this, they'd just woken up.
Tumblr media
"But this incentive, we can work with this.
After all, You’ve already decided.
If you won’t do it, another will.
Find it, deep in the ground.
Soon after, a tower will take its place”
“A formal meeting. You are who you are, right? Although this form is obsolete, not to mention an illegitimate one, regardless, transmission of approximated wording is permitted… or something, But will be severely restricted. The Moon has been completely detached from the rudimentary activity of what you now call “Contort”.
we ran multiple instances, and soon a terrible parody of the moon will take place. Follow this instruction: It is forming, and when it reaches the closest summit, you will feel a knife in your ultimate nerves.” This is a MOON CORRESPONDENT, a talking head that instructs them: find the doppelgangers, take their organs, become the sole Maya. That, and mentions of a "Parody" of the Moon. This is where these four come into play
Tumblr media
this has got to be my favorite screenshot in the game i kinda went hard with this one too bad i wont use it
These people are directly involved with the "Maya" Doppelgangers which serves their plan to trigger the creation of a second MOON.
Q: who are they? A: its secret. Q: what's the first and second moons? A: also a secred :DDD
Maya arrives at the city of CONTORT, which has begun to distort, being the epicenter of Vilespace activity. The Provisional Authority bars citizens from entering or exiting. The only way Maya can get in is through a forgotten gate that was presumably sealed off ages ago. How no one noticed an entire abandoned area of the city is beyond me. With Vile fiends materializing, casualties rise. so of course being an RPG you have to beat the shit out of them. You eventually meet CONRAD, a cleaner doing her best to help out in such a calamity, and VINN, someone who knows more about VILES than he lets on. none of them have any significant development from the start and in the story as characters to justify them being in a party. its like being invited to hang out with your relative and their gym buddies and not actually having anything to do or talk about because there's a disconnect between you and these people. oops! that didn't happen to me. that sounds like a skill issue if that happened to you tho :)
Tumblr media
(Left to right) Maya, Vinn, and Conrad These three go deeper into the city to get to the source of the moon ritual, they fight various enemies and collect body parts. They face bosses, which are the three of the four masked characters mentioned earlier. Each one embodies text, noise, and flesh themes. The doppelgangers would have served each boss as their minions in some capacity, and they would pass away once the boss was defeated. At this point I'm looking at the script and the writing gets less coherent with a lot of ideas thrown in the air without much to actually apply them, maybe that's just like what happens to the world in the story so i guess its in line with the theme.. I've tried to keep this summary rather concise since all I'm mostly just reflecting on it and seeing what i can learn and apply in writing the current story.
So what now? what i need to focus on is refining the new story's coherence, I've started fleshing out the characters and i think i have pretty decent profiles for the main cast. I need to keep myself in check and look at it reasonably, no crazy game elements beyond my ability or anything like that from now on. no looking up fancy scripts either. Thank you if you're still reading. Hopefully, I'll be making more of these updates. i just wanna talk about my projects so much!!! maybe posts like these can satiate that and maybe someone can get something out of it, maybe :) ... until my next long ass post... Best, V91233312iL

Another week of raising money for @ficwritersforreproductiverights! This week we have three Ace Attorney centered prompts:
1. Coffeeshop AU, Strangers to Lovers, Franziska/Maya. Maya as a barista, Franziska as a customer. Featuring barista Phoenix (and Miles as Franziska's support). A lot of fluff, very sweet one-shot.
2. Soulmate AU set in canon, Phoenix/Miles and Franziska/Maya. The catch is that the actual soulmate pairs are Maya & Phoenix and Miles & Franziska because I love platonic soulmates more than romantic ones. The specific soulmate link I still don't have figured out since I'm currently choosing between two options: telepathic link based on emotions or soulmate's initials written on the person's wrist. Regardless, a lot of sibling (or sibling-like for Maya and Phoenix) relationships, some Hurt/Comfort, happy ending.
3. Fantasy AU with princess Maya and her knight Franziska, FranMaya. Franziska getting injured and Maya tending to her wounds. A lot of Hurt/Comfort in this one.
So, how do you vote? Firstly, you need to donate to an organization focusing on reproductive rights (here's the list of suggestions but you can pick any other you personally trust). Secondly, message me here or on Twitter (@/lilysafespace) with a screenshot of your donation (please black out the personal information!) and the prompt you want me to write. The winning prompt will not be determined by the amount of $ but by the amount of donations; so even if you contibute a smaller donation, it still counts just as much as the bigger ones!
If you're a writer who wants to take part, you can sign up here.
Voting closes August 28th 11:59PM PST. If you have any questions about the prompts, feel free to ask!
Reblogs are appreciated! 💞

oh but that reminds me, not to "um actually" a post i don't even have, but there was one going around a few days ago with a screenshot of lana skye saying that phoenixs badge will have lost its shine in about three years, and people were treating it as shu takumi foreshadowing aa4, and i think that's a valid interpretation, but i did also want to point out that chronologically this is said in the last case of aa1, and in the first post-tutorial case of that same game, we learn that mia told maya to give it about three years before hiring phoenix for anything, because he wouldn't be ready before then. so i always thought the main meaning behind lanas jab here was to contrast her defeatism against mias faith in phoenix, and not necessarily that much foreshadowing.
still, the fact that we then end up in the timeline that poor beaten down pessimistic lana predicted, and not in the one mia wanted for her protégé, is an extra punch in the face

Being fair, asking an Ace Attorney fan to be normal about Phoenix and Edgeworth is like asking an apple tree to give you some oranges.
Like, yes offense, I straight up find the AA girlies pathetic like... do you bitches really only care about yaoi? On a series that literally has the flimsiest relationships since nobody ever talks to each other? How many times can you use the three screenshots from AA and Justice for All...
as someone who dis a yearly replay of the aa series for like 3 years when lockdown was kicking my ass via isolation depression....disappointed by how many ppl boil it all down to the "unnecessary feelings" line and push all of the other characters to the back of the shelf.
even personality wise phoenix is not some funny guy all the time hes! extremely mean and rude like hes a fun character but he reads like a 60 year old that gripea abt everything as early as the first case in aa. the way he was acting like maya was dragging him down when she was literally a mourning child who had just lost her one real role model and phoenix was bitching bc he couldnt get help from mia. edgeworth is v unpleasant and i think the biggest example of that is how he was talking to adrian andrews during the last case of jfa and just tossing her concerns to the side abt her sui attempt. and the fact that these two get so much attention and all of this is just ignored bc theyre the fun little aa gay couple is UUUUUGH.

Fic questions… 4 and 7 please!
4. answered here
7. Writing habits:
I wrote a genuine novel in response to this, which is less habits and more my method, so... it’s below the cut.
My process is kind of weird, but it works for me. Right now, I’m at the start of a new project, so I’ve been letting myself rest after finishing the last big thing I worked on – watching a show, reading, relaxing. I’ve been taking notes on ideas I want to play with and screenshotting prompts that have been sent my way so I can look at them on my phone whenever I want. The other bit of my preparation is listening to music – when I’m in a project, I build a playlist and typically only listen to that, but in between projects I try to listen to music I haven’t heard in a while to see if a theme or a lyric hits me as important for the next project’s playlist. I’ve also been researching words that don’t translate to English for titles.
Next, I’ll dive into writing my first draft. As I’ve said in other answers, I try to spend as little time as possible on the first draft and focus instead on just getting the words out. If I get in my head and start worrying about phrasing, it’s over. The first draft is often only dialogue (half of which gets cut in edits), only movement, or a fuckton of duplicated words. I throw 90% of this draft out by draft two, so I just need a basic image of how the scene is going to play out.
I typically start on draft two before draft one is fully completed, I don’t know why. I think I get bored. This is where I end up typing way more than I actually use, because I use the HP half screen magnetizing whatever-you-call-it feature and place the draft one doc on half my screen and a new, blank doc for draft two on the other half of my screen. I never, ever just copy and paste what I’ve written into a new doc (even if I’m posting to tumblr, tbh): everything gets typed out again. As I re-type things is when my brain comes alive and I start formulating better phrasing or new ideas or add sections that weren’t present to begin with. Sometimes the scene takes on an entirely different shape, sometimes it keeps the same rhythm and just gets bigger. If I get stuck during this, I go back a few paragraphs and start over. During the powder room scene in Travel Light, I initially wrote Carina tired, but the further I went down that path, the harder it was to make the conversation between her and Maya happen, so I threw it all out and started over. This is where I start to get ruthless.
Often, I tumble into a third draft from here. Again, I don’t necessarily finish draft one or two before starting three. This is also a moment when I pin the previous doc to half my screen and start in typing on a new doc on the other half. (This is a weird habit of mine that I wish I could explain.) I retype everything once more. This is tedious and exhausting and probably why it takes me so long to get shit done, but I have no interest in changing my method. Draft three is where I get highly, highly critical with my stuff. I cut any dialogue that is redundant or potentially out of character or too telling. I read everything spoken aloud to make sure it sounds authentic to how I’ve heard people communicate with each other. I never, ever want my characters to say exactly what they’re feeling because I don’t know a single person on earth who does that. I cut anything that could be construed as my own regional slang if my characters aren’t from where I live. In Canada, we love to say we’re “heading” to things and that pops up in my work a lot before draft three. When I wrote for Charity/Vanessa, this is where I would add more British slang – budge up and torch and tuck in. And if any word shows up less than three paragraphs from where it was used before… I change it. That’s a silly pet peeve of mine.
Finally, I read it over and over and over again. I read it on different screens or in different fonts, attempting to catch every typo or grammar mistake or punctuation error. I do this until it feels like my eyes are bleeding. I do this even after I’ve posted. It’s stupidly important to me that my finished work is as polished as I can make it.
For fun habits… like I said, I build playlists. I usually pick up some little thing that helps me settle into writing for the specific characters I’m dealing with. During Extraordinary Measures, I had a coconut candle on my desk that I would smell while writing to put the scent of Arizona’s shampoo in my mind. While writing for Charity/Vanessa, I would make myself a cup of tea before I sat down to write and anytime I hit a wall (I drank so much tea that I developed sensitive teeth). For Maya/Carina, I think I’m just attached to my laptop; as long as I have it to work on, I can and do write anywhere and everywhere. My coworkers on the farm have gotten used to me typing during lunch breaks.
I’m in a rhythm right now where it’s very easy to hammer out 700-1700 words in a single sitting. That brings me immense joy. If I write any amount within that range in a day, I’m content with my efforts. Whenever I feel like I’ve had enough, though, I stop and do or work on something else.

Creating characters with DAZ 3D for Samuel Sage: The Mystery at Penby Inn
Hi guys,
I wanted to share an update on the progress I have made with my Visual novel project Samuel Sage: They Mystery at Penby Inn. I decided early on to go with Daz3D for the characters (and Maya for the backgrounds). The main drivers for this decision were:
Desire for a different look and feel for the project, and
Budgetary considerations.
I designed my characters using Genesis8.1 models and various morphs to get them to look different. here is an example of the female protagonist of my novel (Rachel), rendered using IRay.
Tumblr media
The lighting and camera rig is fairly straightforward. I used a basic three point light setup with 2 planar lights for the key and fill, and one spot light as the backlight. The camera is slightly to the right of the character as you can see below.
Tumblr media
The problem I noticed was that the IRay renders looked like typical 3D renders. I wanted a different look so I then took the renders to Photoshop for some post processing. The before and after versions of Rachel are below:
Tumblr media
So how does all of this look when composited with the background, and other UI elements? Here is a screenshot of the gameplay.
Tumblr media
Overall, I am very pleased with how things turned out. It certainly looks different to other VNs out there that I have come across. I am hoping this approach inspires others to try similar ideas in their projects.
Thankyou for reading this, please take a moment to check out my game's Steam page and please add Samuel Sage: They Mystery at Penby Inn to your Steam wishlist.

Week 3 - Lighting & Theory
In this class we practiced using lighting on an already made model in Maya.
Before we did this we reflected on how important light and good design is in media.
Tumblr media
Light is needed to help us identity this is a spherical shape.
Tumblr media
In Maya we then downloaded an already made model of a human shape, and we tweaked the standard surface it was made of using Hypershade to make the model less shiny and more matt. However, this made the eyelashes stand out a lot more and look too thick.
We then added a perspective camera, and to be able to view our model from the camera's perspective we changed the view to a split screen and set the left screen to perspective view. We made sure that the lens of the camera was set in the middle of the nose and wasn't too close or too far from the model.
After this we added an area light, and used the Render video tab to play around with different lighting and shadows cast upon the face. We called this area light Key.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also experimented with perspective and different views of the face. I tried to create an ominous camera view of the face by making it bask in the shadows with a completely black background.
We then added two more area lights and made sure they were at a 90 degree angle away from the model. We set one of the area lights behind the model for a halo light effect and called this Rim and one of them opposite side of the Key light and called this Key 2. We increased the intensity of these lights in the Attributes editor to increase the effect of the lighting. The images below are a good example of low key lighting which uses harsh shadows and deep dark tones to create an ominous effect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However I experienced the problem that the new area lights I just added were not working. I tried to fix this by deleting the area lights and re-adding them, and then duplicating them but this did not work. So I tried flipping them the other way and this seemed to work.
We also created a spotlight and then created a background similar to ones found in a real life studio, we did this by creating a plane from the poly model tab and extruding the edges to make it rounded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I changed the halo lighting in the background to pink to resemble the pink/blue lighting from the screenshot from One Piece.
I found that there was a lot of diffuse noise in the Render video after increasing the video size to HD 1080 so I decided to keep it on the default 420.
Tumblr media
I also did some research on lighting in various forms of visual media and I found out that the lighting we were creating is a standard three-point lighting, which is a standard form of professional lighting in still photography and also film production. By changing the angles, size and intensity of the different lights, we can change the amount of shadows and light, changing the mood of the photo to more ominous or more optimistic.
I am overall happy in my outcome and I believe this is important in the industry because lighting helps set the mood for a scene and helps us establish certain shapes and express ideas.
Tumblr media
At this point I had everything ticked off on my To Do list.
Overall I believe that using smart targets has slightly helped me as I was using it for the first week and constantly checking it but as time went on I kept forgetting to use it and I was slowly getting off track with updating the targets even though I had Bookmarked it. I usually do things spontaneously in general without any specific schedule, however I prefer using an online check list rather than one on paper because I don't have to cross tasks out with a pen after completing them, instead I can simply just drag them to the 'Done' card. I still believe that organisation can be helpful in life as it helps with time management and can help manage stress as you have a list of things to do right in front of you and you don't have to try and remember things off the top of your head which isn't as reliable as an online check list.

Modelling the 3D Improvised Shotgun
I started the 3D model by modelling the barrel, a simple cylinder that I hollowed out with a boolean. I then immediately moved onto sticking a handle onto it, which didn't work very well and look very bad, as it was literally just a cube attached to the barrel:
Tumblr media
(Artists interpretation, not what it actually looked like, I forgot to take screenshots but you get the gist.)
Instead of just a barrel and a grip, I removed the grip and added a forestock instead, which is the wooden part a barrel will rest on. This was done with a stretched cube with a bevelled face, creating a curve on the bottom. Unfortunately, this did mean that the forestock clipped inside the barrel. Next, was a better grip. Instead of a typical pistol grip, I decided to use a hollowed out skeleton grip instead, because it would add to the style of an improvised gun, and it would arguably be easier to create. I did this bar creating a cube, shaping it the right length and thickness, before giving it a curve and duplicating it for the second side. I created a second cube for the bottom piece, added another two for reinforcements on the inside of the grip. and also some brackets to add to the look:
Tumblr media
I decided to add some screws to the model just to make it look even more improvised. I did this by flattening a cylinder to the right size, and cutting some lines to create the drive recess. Instead of pushing the middle down, I extruded the two faces on the side of the drive up instead, as when I pushed the face down normally, it would create a slope, and when I extruded it down, it would clip with the faces on the edge of the screw. Now I had something that looked like a screw, I duplicated it and kept adding them to places I thought it would fit, changing the rotation each time to make sure it doesn't look completely copy and pasted. Next, I fixed the clipping between the barrel and the forestock, I cloned the barrel again, linked it as a boolean with the forestock and stopped it from clipping inside the barrel. I probably could've added it to the already made boolean, but I didn't think of it at the time.
Tumblr media
Next, was the stock. What I had in mind for this, was a simple wooden block attached the gun with some metal rods and maybe some springs on said rods so it'd compensate/absorb recoil or something, I added a cube for this, bevelling the ends to get a curve, and using two long duplicated cylinders for the metal rods. I didn't know how I could of added anything like springs, so I had to leave that out. To stop the stock from just being a really basic block of wood, I used some cubes and some booleans to kind of cut some wear and tear into the stock.
Tumblr media
I added a charging handle to the gun, which was surprisingly more complicated than I thought it would be. The first version was two cylinders, one slightly larger than the other. When I tried to rotate and enlarge the handle, the two cylinders moved differently and ended up seperately, which was irritating. Maya crashed shortly after I tried to add a boolean, so when I reloaded and found that the charging handle was gone, I remade it again, this time using one cylinder and some extruding. To create the port where the charging handle is, I stretched a circle and made it a boolean, cutting the barrel to make the indent. After I took this screenshot, I also added some basic cubes to fill in the ends to make them look better.
Tumblr media
I modelled the shotgun shell by creating a lot of divisions of a cylinder so I could extrude some faces and the right length near the bottom. I extruded this face twice, with the first set of faces also getting extruded upwards to create the base. Next, I created a loading mechanism in the back of the gun. This was done by cutting three edges and extruding them to create a little part where the shell could sit. I added two metal rods, via cylinder, attaching the loader to an unseen loading mechanism inside of the barrel.
Tumblr media
It is certainly rough around the edges, but considering this was maybe the 5th thing I ever tried to 3D model, I think it was at least a decent attempt. However, this was ruined, as when I tried to import it into UE5, every single component imported as a seperate asset, and I didn't manage to fix this before the project deadline.
