Your sense of belief! In the good! in the world! You once believed in ME
#lyrics#yesterday was like the floodgates i kept walking around today trying not to cry over this one line crashing against me like a wave#maybe if i have one single favorite lyric from this album it's this#aksdjfhakshfjh catch me making a breakup song about me and my old self like the self-absorbed idiot i am!#my revealing thought for you today is that maybe hits different is so special to me because it's like the funny version of cornelia street#(funny like black humor like the grim humor you feel when you almost pass out on the floor of your house)#(and you can't do anything about it so you have to laugh at it otherwise how will you get up again)#remember when she was like i don't know if i can write breakup songs anymore when i'm happy? and then she wrote cs & the rest of lover#and they were like. the blueprint for the webspinning of folkmore#i loved (still love) cornelia street for a very long time because to me it's like it holds eternity in it even when admitting#to the reality of loss. it's almost like a breakup song because it carries within itself that vow of never-recovering#never moving past this. always returning and turning this in your soul because nothing will ever be this again#and i think hits different is so special because it IS that moment in cornelia street; her running out not knowing if he'd ever come back#it's her living if i ever lose you i can never return to the home that we shared#it has that same gravity because it contains now the same reality of loss and that loss in real time#but at the same time it's so precious and sweet because it still carries the same love that made that vow real!#she can't move past it because it will be with her forever! it is the gift given to her and she doesn't know#what to do or where to go when she's got to let go of it! so she's reeling and trying to figure out where on earth to set the love down#anyway. this turned out much longer than it ought to be. i hope you're doing well tumblr and thank you for reading if you did <3

(when you help him write lyrics for his new single)
contains: idolbf!Jake x fem!reader | genre: a little bit of angst and a little bit of fluff | tw! crying | wc: 0,6k
reblogs, likes and comments are highly appreciated!!!
author’s note: guess who is back 😼 honestly as a musician, it is probably the most disappointing part - not being able to come up with any good melody or just being unsatisfied with your work, but i guess all creators can agree on that :’)
Tumblr media
Jake buried his face in the palms of his hands as yet another phrase slipped his mind. He never thought writing lyrics would be so difficult yet here he is hopeless since all the good words seemed to be nonoperative. Not only lyrics were his problem, but all the melodies also didn’t sound as good as he wanted. He thought all those years of musical education and violin playing would be helpful but somehow made it even worse, setting expectations so high, it was almost impossible to reach.
Suddenly the sound of a new message notification resounded in the quiet studio. He immediately reached for it thinking it could be you. Thankfully it was.
y/nie 💞: hi my love! are you done or should I come over?
He thought for a while and bit his lip. The last thing he wanted is you to see him in that state. His hair was messy, he didn’t shave for a while, and his eyes bloodshot red from crying and being in front of a computer for a whole day. The only moment he left the studio was to go to the toilet and when Jungwon asked him if he had maybe seen their choreographer.
He finally decided to just apologize for being at work until late hour once again.
His phone lit up again showing another message from you.
y/nie 💞: well too bad cuz i’m already at hybe :)
The message made him freeze. He really didn’t want you to see him like that, having a feeling that you were going to scold him for not taking proper care of himself. He quickly grabbed his phone to take a quick shower before you came only to see you as soon as he opened ten door. He noticed the bag of his favorite snacks and a bright smile on your face, which slowly faded away as you saw how in bad shape your boyfriend was. He thought about how disappointed you were, not knowing the only person you were mad at was yourself, feeling guilty for letting that happen.
“My love…” you finally spoke and caressed his cheek lovingly. This faint touch made his lip quiver as tears started to flood his eyes.
You closed the door behind you for some privacy and engulfed him in a tight hug, that he needed so much.
“I feel like a failure. I can’t even come up with the easiest lyrics,” he cried trying to calm down at the same time.
“Jake, look at me,” you spoke and cupped his cheeks. “It’s okay to have a block, I know how difficult it is to write good lyrics and that’s why I’m always so proud of you and how far you’ve come. You never fail to impress me and many others.”
He nodded at your words which spoke to him perfectly and resolved his doubts.
“Thank you,” he simply said and smiled at you.
“Can I maybe help you? Can I see what you have already?”
A little skeptical about your idea he showed you his notes full of scribbles and crossed-off words. You took your time in reading his work and soon gave your feedback, which to your surprise seemed to untie some knots in his mind. You watched as he slowly nods and writes it down hastily, regaining his confidence thanks to both your comment and good remarks.
You spend long hours in that one small studio, thinking of good and catchy phrases and tunes in the hope that maybe both of your names are going to be listed in the final credits of the album.

My personal top albums of all time
If anyone who respects my music opinions is interested, IN NO ORDER because I can't choose between my babies. Also, warning, it's mostly gonna be albums from the 90s. Only the albums that are described as Gothic Rock, Darkwave (Neoclassical or not), Deathrock and Ethereal Wave are goth, the rest are some other flavor of dark alternative.
Aégis, by Theatre of Tragedy (1998)
Exquisite Gothic Rock, despite the band usually playing Metal, with themes of mostly Greco-Roman mythology with some other European folklore thrown in. The most angelic and soft soprano vocals delivered by Liv Kristine with baritone whispers delivered by Raymond. Ethereal yet complex atmospheres with soft guitars, strong bass, poetic lyrics in Shakespearean English.
Highlights: Cassandra, Venus, Poppæa, Bacchante.
Inferno, by Lacrimosa (1995)
Gothic Rock that flirts slightly with Metal in some tracks. This is when they made the jump from Neue Deutsche Todeskunst (basically late 80s/early 90s German Darkwave except it's a little weirder than most other Darkwave at the time) to more Rock-based styles of music, as well as the first album Anne Nurmi was featured in. Tilo's best studio vocal performance in my opinion. Beautiful lyrics about love, passion, devotion, and the end of the world, could only be written by a goth guy with a gift for poetry who just fell in deep love. Only iffy track is Copycat but even that one is still a classic among fans if only because of its high energy, and killer guitars, bass and percussion.
Highlights: Schakal, Vermächtnis der Sonne, No blind eyes can see, Kabinett der Sinne.
Passion's Price, by Diva Destruction (1999)
Diva Destruction's debut, from back when Darkwave was actually dark and dreary in sound. Songs about heartbreak, betrayal, abuse and love, in the band's most musically complex and hauntingly atmospheric album. A definite classic with nothing but great track after great track.
Highlights: The Broken Ones, Snake, Prey, Glare.
Selected Scenes from the End of the World, by London After Midnight (1992)
Some of the best Gothic Rock to have ever come out, in my opinion. Deep, rich, dark, mysterious, sensual, macabre, romantic (arguably too romantic even by 90s goth standards as the album apparently got criticized for being almost entirely love songs? Wtf). The song that introduced me to goth in February of 2007 is in this album and it's the reason why I never looked back.
Highlights: The Black Cat, Claire's Horrors, Sacrifice, Spider and the Fly.
Annwyn, beneath the Waves, by Faith and the Muse (1996)
Ethereal Wave royalty in maybe not their most iconic album, but definitely the one closest to my heart by them. Despite goth music being associated with darkness in the minds of most, this album is full of glittering light in the most poetic and heartfelt way possible. The vocals are soft and tender when they need to be, delivered by Monica Richards, or firm and epic when needed, as delivered by William Faith. The lyrical themes are full of Celtic folklore, love, hope, magic and a feeling of reclamation of nature and an ancestral past (but not in like, a white supremacist way, I promise).
Highlights: Annwyn, beneath the Waves, The Hand of Man, The Silver Circle, Rise and Forget.
Treasure, by Cocteau Twins (1984)
Walking a thin line between Ethereal Wave and Dreampop (as they're pioneers in both genres). Some tracks are darker than others, but they're all equally delightful, full of beauty and a dreamy gaze hovers over every single song, all of which contain some of the most heavenly vocals in the scene. One of Robert Smith's favorite albums (he also really like Diva Destruction's debut!). If you're into more relaxing and atmospheric music, this might be your intro to goth.
Highlights: Beatrix, Persephone, Pandora (for Cindy), Lorelei.
Anthology, by Nosferatu (2006)
Legendary Gothic Rock band among those of us who enjoy a campier vampiric goth sound that takes itself too seriously, and deliciously so. Yes, I know I'm cheating by going with a compilation album, sue me. It's simply a collection of their best tracks and I honestly couldn't choose between all their actual albums, so there!
Highlights: Inside the Devil, Lucy is Red, Rise, Witching Hour.
Es reiten die Toten so schnell (or: The Vampyre Sucking at his Own Vein), by Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (2003)
Probably the gothiest and most elite Neoclassical Darkwave out there. Deeply macabre, equally horrific and beautifully crafted, with expressive and dramatic vocals, themes of vampirism and death masking more human subjects such as social rejection (Anna Varney-Cantondea is a trans woman/transfeminine person who's battled suicidality and depression from a very young age), depression, gay/trans desire, and suicidality. It truly is a masterpiece of macabre and neoclassical goth.
Highlights: The Feast of Blood, Holy Water Moonlight, Baptisma, Dead Souls.
Blood Death Ivory, by Angelspit (2008)
Probably one of the few modern Industrial bands who have thoroughly kept the spirit of early Industrial alive, fashioned after greats such as Skinny Puppy and Die Form, especially in the 00s when the Industrial scene heavily turned to more superficial lyrics based on the aesthetics of cyberpunk art rather than its subversive content. The music is aggressive, simultaneously animalistic yet robotic with a touch of demonic, rarely ever without smartly phrased critiques of capitalism and consummerism. At this point in time the band was a duo between Amelia Arsenic/Destroyx and Zoog Von Rock. It's definitely some edgelord shit (affectionate), but by no means in a vapid, only-for-shock-value way.
Highlights: Skinny Little Bitch, Lust Worthy, Devilicious, Jugular.
Alles für dich, by Grausame Töchter (2012)
Some of the most dynamic, deliciously quirky, sexual, hyper and twisted Dark Electro bands currently making music. The lead vocalist and lyricist of the band, Aranea Peel, is a lesbian dominatrix, fetish model, trained ballet dancer, and lover of Weimar republic era artistry who absolutely imprints lots of dark flapper energy into the band's music and imagery. The lyrics are unabashedly perverted, kinky, sapphic and fucked up. Her singing is nothing short of chef's kiss worthy, always expressive and strange, but with pristine execution and technique.
Highlights: Tanz für dich, TABU, Therapie für dich, ICH DARF DAS!
The Astonishing Eyes of Evening, by Cinema Strange (2002)
KINGS of 00s Deathrock with touches of Dark Cabaret influences, as inescapable in the goth scene in the 00s as She Past Away and its many copycats are now, and for very good reason. Delightfully macabre, not the first to use ghostly androgynous vocals but certainly one of the bands who better utilize that style of vocals. Imo, this and their homonymous album are must-listens for people interested in the goth music scene in general, but especially those interested in Deathrock. Truly Halloween turned into an album.
Highlights: Tomb Lilies, Catacomb Kittens, 'Ere the Flowers Unfold, Legs and Tarpaulin.
Opheliac, by Emilie Autumn (2006)
Literally music for mentally unstable sapphic girls with a poet's soul and flare for both irony and intense earnest feeling. It's a very original combination of Synthpop, Punk Cabaret, and Neoclassical music, with influences of Industrial and Darkwave. It's all masterfully crafted by classically trained violinist, poet, writer, actress, and somewhat of a burlesque performer with a rich alto voice; Emilie Autumn. She wrote this album after suffering medical abuse at a mental hospital after a suicide attempt brought on by an abortion and emotionally abusive relationship. I'm not exaggerating when I say this album saved my life and also changed me as a person.
Highlights: Opheliac, Liar, The Art of Suicide, 306.
Of the Want Infinite, by Requiem in White (1995)
You don't often hear of bands combining Deathrock and Ethereal Wave as they're often perceived as the polar opposite ends of the spectrum of goth music; Deathrock being the goth subgenre closest in sound and idiosyncrasy to punk, and Ethereal Wave being one of the goth subgenres furthest from goth's punk roots. Add in an operatic soprano and you get... Some of THE best, most underrated goth bands of the 90s. Dramatic, ethereal, creepy, elegant, ghostly and complex, with incredible vocals. Truly a pity they only released one album and a couple of EPs.
Highlights: Everlasting Peace, Beneath the Leaves, My Shame, Acanthus.
Agony of the Undead Vampire Part II, by Two Witches (1992)
Truly another giant of vampiric Gothic Rock, absolute 90s legends and Finland's most iconic goth band. Themes of vampirism, occasionally anti-Christianity, sex, sensuality and kink abound. The vocals might put some people off, but it's definitely worth it.
Highlights: The Hungry Eyes, The Omen, Mircalla, We All Fall Down.
Mors Syphilitica, by Mors Syphilitica (1996)
Requiem in White may have disbanded after their first proper album, but two out of its three core band members, then spouses Lisa and Doc Hammer, went on to form pure Ethereal Wave act Mors Syphilitica right after and while it's generally less dark and spooky than its predecesor band, they're still a delight to the ears.
Highlights: The Woman Who Believed, Fell a Dance, The Vain Stroke, Below the Baleful Star.
Beyond the Veil, by Tristania (1999)
I've raved about this album so many times. Just... THE definitive Gothic Metal album to me. The lyrics, the choir of sopranos (aka all Vibeke Stene and her rich, sensual, dark, gorgeous voice), the perfect growling, the somber baritone vocals, the perfectly crafted guitar riffs (no guitar salad, all expressive and precisely timed), the exciting epic percussion, the piano, the violin solos, THE SYMPHONICS. Oh, my God. There's not one second wasted in the entire album, and I'm not being hyperbolic, I mean that. Truly the perfect Gothic Metal album.
Highlights: Beyond the Veil, Angina, Heretique, Opus Relinque.
Serpentine Gallery, by Switchblade Symphony (1995)
Tbh all of Switchblade Symphony's discography is fantastic, but their debut truly is a masterpiece. Creepy ragdoll vibes all over, great vocals, rich composition, poetic yet accessible lyrics. If you're into a more kindergoth vibe (Wednesday Addams, creepy dolls, child-like or even lolita-esque looks), this might be the band for you.
Highlights: Clown, Mine Eyes, Dollhouse, Bad Trash.
Vampyre Erotica, by Inkubus Sukkubus (1997)
The other band that introduced me to goth in 2007 and got me to never look back. Though the first song by them I ever listened to, Samhain, isn't from this album, this album is the one that truly got me hooked for life. Vampiric, sensual, decadent and dark. It has everything including really sweet vocals.
Highlights: Vampyre Erotica, Danse Vampyr, Hell-Fire, Heart of Lilith.

Favorite Albums: choose 9 and then tag 9 people!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my own sanity, I didn't include musicals because I could fill up a whole other 3x3 grid with them, and comparing musicals to non-musical theater albums is weird.
Those last 4 that you definitely don't recognize are by Old Earth who you should definitely listen to if you want artsy ambient indie folk with really intricate guitar. My absolute favorite artist by far, and also the most obscure artist I listen to by far.
Electric by The Pet Shop Boys — I think this is my favorite album period. I am still pissed off that Tom Scott called it "not that great" in the old Technical Difficulties podcast. Maybe I'm biased because it was my favorite album when I was 14 and because it's where I really fell in love with the Pet Shop Boys. God I love them. So much. I'm way too excited for the new album and I worship geowayne's website where he analyzes all their songs. I probably should have put another PSB album on here, but there isn't another where I'm in love with every track. Plus honestly so many of my favorite tracks of theirs are B sides. They still release B sides with their singles, and this album cycle, the B sides are honestly better than the actual singles. Anyway electric is pure synthy electropop and I adore it in that way you can only love something you first heard at 14.
Pure Heroine by Lorde — I read a quote somewhere where Lorde said she tried to really put all of being a teenager into the album, so much so that once she became an adult, she probably wouldn't understand or like it anymore. I can definitely say that I'm not nearly as attached to it anymore now that I'm an adult, but God, it was my life when I was 13. She really did capture the unique ennui of being a teenager. I wrote a novel in eighth grade, and I wrote at least half of it to tracks from this album. Also, hot take: Royals is my least favorite track by a lot. Buzzcut Season is my favorite.
My Head is an Animal by Of Monsters and Men — God, this one was my life when I was like, 12. I fell in love with folk there, and I'm still in love nearly a decade later. Another album where I still love every track.
Strange Trails by Lord Huron — hey look, an album I actually discovered and came to love as an adult! The fact that I love Lord Huron's brand of folky horror/fantasy/western music that tell stories with characters should not surprise anyone. Also, if I had to describe my experience with schizophrenia in one song, I'd choose Meet Me in the Woods.
The Tragic Treasury by The Gothic Archies — Look. Hear me out. Is it a album based purely on A Series of Unfortunate Events? Yes. But. Is it also an album where I genuinely love every track and have genuinely been known to just throw it on shuffle? Yes. I mean I think of one lyric from this album, like, weekly. I swear it's not just ASOUE brainrot that makes me like it so much. If it'd ever gotten a vinyl release, I'd absolutely own it. I wish it had gotten one.
a low place at The Old Place by Old Earth — honestly this is probably only my favorite Old Earth album because it's the one that I was able to actually get on vinyl and being able to play that vinyl is so lovely. I mean, it's good, but so is everything by Old Earth. Then again, Less Words is my favorite single track by them and it is on this album. Look. All the Old Earth albums I've listed here are, at most, 20 minutes long. If you like ambient artsy indie folk with lyrics that are there more for the way they sound than their meaning, try one.
light shaped by Old Earth — god the lyrics to this one. Normally I don't like Old Earth for the lyrics but. "It gets old/then it's done" and "what if it's just some song that gets you home" and especially "I'm holding your arms/and you're holding my eyes/and I lie like the right thing to do" are all just so great. And so is the middle track with no lyrics.
... until they're called by Old Earth — have you ever heard an album so good that you a) just played the whole thing and danced to it in your basement nonstop for the full 12 minutes, and then b) wrote a poem about the experience? People talk about finding God, but dancing to that album was the moment I found athiesm. The beauty of us all being here for no reason, just feeling things and living and doing our best to make something beautiful out of it.
Two Torches, at a Place Where Three Roads Meet by Old Earth — I'll be honest, I don't have much to say about this one. They're just a really solid three tracks.
... Yeah okay I really like Old Earth. Don't judge me.
Thank you @cygninae and @thehistoryone for tagging me! I'll tag @ven10 (I'm surprised neither of the people who tagged me tagged you), @weirdthoughtsandideas (ditto), @70snasagay (hmmmm i wonder what you'll put), @cat-boy-tom, @thetreetzar, @buncoreclown, @notthatalex, @unfortunate-sapphic-disaster, and @roach-in-the-kitchen. No pressure, obviously!

making a mixtape for boyfriend!eddie
wc: 730
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。. .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
“i don’t know if i should trust this since you titled it “awesome mix volume one.””
“shh, don’t make fun, or you’ll never get a volume two.”
eddie nodded and smiled at you before overdramatically making a show of “zipping his lips shut,” which only made you laugh and roll your eyes.
over the past few months of you two dating, you fell into an almost weekly pattern where eddie would play new albums for you and always make you mixtapes as ways to introduce you to his favorite bands and artists; which made sense because he loved music. and maybe you didn’t like every single song he showed you, but you loved the happy smile he’d get on his face as he played you something that you hadn’t heard of and talked about a specific instrumental part or lyric of the song.
you were a little different, you had other things that you’d drone on and on about— things that if it was anyone else eddie wouldn’t have necessarily found interesting, but just hearing you talk about it made it interesting to him. he could listen to you talk about your favorite book or some old movie you watched for forever.
these little differences between you two were probably one of your favorite parts about your dynamic.
things slightly changed last week— eddie wanted you to make him a mixtape. it was a request that slightly surprised you, but you of course did it anyway.
“okay, so there’s not, like, one genre or whatever on this, it’s kinda a little bit of everything. just some songs i’ve liked for a while and more recently, and some remind me of you and us. i think i did, like, twelve songs. i can’t fully remember now–”
eddie stopped you mid-ramble with a kiss on the cheek. “just play it, sweetheart.”
you grabbed the tape from him and got up from his bed, placing it in the tape deck of his stereo and pressing play before settling back and sitting across from him.
seconds later, the opening beats of sos by abba started playing and eddie smiled amusingly at you. “abba?”
“no questions or judgements until the end,” you told him seriously; well, as serious as you could with your boyfriend smiling at you. “just enjoy the music, munson.”
he nodded, a smile still on his face, as one of his hands started absentmindedly stroking your knee. you were wearing his hellfire t-shirt and a dark pair of his boxers; you always liked being in his clothes when you were spending the night at his place, and seeing you wear anything of his always made him fold. he would’ve been on you in an instant, kissing your lips and then finding that certain spot on your neck that always made you giggle, like he did most nights, if you two weren’t already doing this.
when the song went from abba to sweet dreams by eurythmics, eddie wanted to say something teasing but he didn’t because he knew that he would only receive a playful scolding or eye roll from you in response.
he ended up liking the queen and tears for fears songs you put on the tape, but what he enjoyed the most was admiring you, watching as you bopped your head along to the beat or mumbled some of the lyrics. in all honesty, he barely paid attention to most of the songs playing, it was too hard. you looked too adorable and that was all he really wanted to focus on.
he wanted to commit this entire moment to memory.
the last song that played was another one by abba, gimme! gimme! gimme!, which felt like a full circle kind of moment, and you didn’t make any move to grab the tape once it stopped.
“so, should i start working on volume two?” you asked playfully as you scooched closer to your boyfriend, letting your knees bump his and reaching out to grab one of his hands.
he only leaned in and kissed you in response. it was slow and sweet and he practically pulled you into his lap in the process.
you smiled at him when you pulled back a bit to catch your breath. his hand was still cupping your cheek and your lips ghosted over his as you spoke. “i’ll just take that as a yes.”

Meet Corroded Coffin, The Up And Coming band of today!
Corroded Coffin was discovered by rock legend, Ozzy Osborne. He saw the band preform and instantly thought of his own band, Black Sabbath and just had to sign them.
“They reminded me so much of us,” Says Osborne. “I just had to get them in the studio immediately!”
Corroded Coffin started off as just four boys with a dream. The band formed when lead singer and guitarist, Eddie Munson met his best friend, Gareth playing his drums in his parents garage.
The two instantly looked for more outcast, such as themselves, to form a band! That’s when they met Jeff, who plays guitar, and Doug who plays bass. Corroded Coffin soon being born.
The group later got gigs in their small town in Indiana at the hideout. From then they’ve continued to jam out and only hoped their dreams of making it big became a reality.
As the years went by they got more and more love from people all over the world, including love from the band Metallica.
The metal group saw them jamming out on Instagram live and immediately shouted the band out! From then on they received more and more gigs from all around the world until soon being discovered.
“It was so fucking insane!” Doug points out. “To be notice by some of our favorite artists, it’s still surreal.”
“We have over ten million followers on our official site. When we opened Instagram the night we got verified it felt fucking sick!” Gareth states.
But the band isn’t the only dreams they have! Obviously being a big as they’ve gotten over night, a lot of their fans are curious about their personal lives.
They didn’t give too much detail, wanting to keep some things to themselves, but lead singer, Eddie Munson had spilled a little about his life outside of being a rockstar!
“This has been my dream for a while. Finally being noticed, having more and more gigs, traveling around the world, releasing an album, and eventually getting my family the fuck outta Hawkins.”
“Your uncle, right?”
Eddie laughs before shaking his head. “Naw, that old geysers gonna die in that town. Trust me, I’ve been trying to convince him to leave Hawkins for years. He loves it there.” Eddie states.
“Oh? Does that mean you’re not a bachelor, Munson?”
“Naw, man! Left that behind me years ago.”
“You just broke a million girls hearts.”
Eddie laughs and shakes his head. He seemed amused that people didn’t know he had a family.
“I got a whole football team of kids, man! Six beautiful ones. One boy and five girls! I’m currently engaged to the woman I’ve known almost my whole life! She’s my whole world.” Eddie points.
The man goes to state his love for his family before slowing drifting the conversation back to his music.
“They all encourage me with my music! A lot of the songs I’ve written just myself are about them! That’s what the band and I try to do when it comes to our own sound! We use our own voices, our own experiences, our own heartbreaks, and love stories and put them into words. We share them with one another and whichever ones we like, we record the sound!”
“Exactly! A lot of bands don’t have that. I think when it comes to it, having your own individual interests is important! It’s what makes us stand out a bit.” Jeff states.
“We obviously write a few songs together, maybe even change a lyric or two in each others individual work, but ultimately, we try to make sure our music reflects who we are, not just together, but individually.” Gareth finished.
There you have it folks, Corroded Coffins gonna take over the world soon. There next single, Lullaby comes out next friday. Check it out!

Official TTPD Review
Fortnight - Such a vibe with headphones on, but still far from being my favorite though. I'm quite shocked this is the first single but I do really like it now at the second listen, still sad post malone didn't get his own verse i was excited for that :/
The Tortured Poets Department - The charlie puth mention really ruined verse 2 for me sadly, but the bridge ruined my life "At dinner, you take my ring off my middle finge. And put it on the one people put wedding rings on. And that's the closest I've come to my heart exploding" LIKE WTF HEART = BROKEN the title of the song is really cool but i dont know i wasnt expecting the song to sound like this.
My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys - I think this may be my second least favorite from this album i dont understand why i didnt really like this song. Maybe it was the vibe of the song and sound especially the choruses which sadly didnt hit. i love how she wrote about a rocky relationship in this song. I feel like this one will definetly be a grower
Down Bad - literally one of my favorites from the whole album. Maybe it's cause the sound feels familiar to me kind off like midnights vibe. But wow that chorus is amazing truly so catchy and the lyrics like wow. i love this song so muchhhh
So Long, London - Not what I expected but still so heartbreakingly pretty. I love her voice in this song it's so pretty and the lyrics are so good oh my god. I swear the verse 3's in this album are vile. "I died on the altar waitin' for the proof" like god damn this whole song is amazing.
But Daddy I Love Him - I loved this song so fucking much. When she said "I'm having his babies" my face dropped and then she hit me with "no not really but you should see your faces" was really fun i'll probably never forget that. i believe this song is of everyone trying to decide her love life for her. And her being like fuck you guys it's my life and you have to accept it and i love her for that!
Fresh Out The Slammer - Those choruses are so good man especially the second one is so good and so me. On first listen this one isn't very memorable but still really good. Now that i've listened to it more like i love this song so much too and the bride ahhh <333
Florida !!! - Ok so maybe i'm a little biased but man this one is so fucking good. I have loved Florence and Taylor for years so like them collaborating was like everything and more. I have now listened to the song like thrice and wowwwww i love it so muchhhhh. Taylor, Florence, Fl welcomes you with open arms man. And like verse 3 was so good their song writing skills are out of this world.
Guilty As Sin? - What an interesting song, like man, idk how to feel. I love the chorus fs. I've come to interpret this song as her having thoughts of a man who possibly isn't available per say or it's just something that can never happen between the two but the want for eachother is there. "They don't know how you've haunted me so stunningly" I love this lyric btw and the chorus right after like wowwww
Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me - ME IM SCARED WTF. Her screaming that line was everything and like the second half of the song is so incredible like wow. also this line has stuck with me since last night "Then we could all just laugh until I cry" ALSO THE ASYLUM WHERE THEY RAISED ME SDJNVFI. I love how she's kind of portraying herself in this song as like the stereotypical scary neighbor in movies. At least that's how I saw it. The whole bridge is incredible and magnificent I adore this song.
I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) - GIRL NO YOU CANT AND IM SO HAPPY YOU ACCEPTED THAT. Once I got past the point that this song is about ratty healy I really liked it. it's vibes are so good and the imagery is amazing.
loml - what if i said this should've been track 5. This was the only song in the album I cried to on first listen. It hit me like a bullet and I will never forgive cat lady swift for not preparing me for this song. Literally so fucking hurtful i'm screaming oh my lord. I- no im never getting over this song, sorry not sorry. And the fact "They almost had it all" but there life was cut short aka the relationship ended oh god kill me.
I Can Do It With A Broken Heart - I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. This song is heartbreaking don't let the production fool you, the lyrics want to make you rip you're hair out. And you know what i'll be dancing to this song with a broken heart. "The lights refract sequin stars off her silhouette every night. I can show you lies" it's giving mirrorball like augh i love this song so much!!! and the chorus is everything "I'm so obsessed with him, but he avoids me like the plague" SO FUCKING REAL.
The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived - DRAG HIS ASS TAYLOR YEAHHHH. HELLO WTF THIS SONG IS SO GOOD AND FOR ALL OF U HATING ON IT U JUST DONT GET IT THE PASSIVE AGGRESSIVENESS IS EVERYTHINGGGG. mad woman you'd be proud asf. also my religion mentioned as a tongue in cheek to his anti religion views 👏
The Alchemy - I'm not gonna talk about this song much but like I didn't like it at all, i'm sorry. It sounds like one of those Kelce parody songs 😭
Clara Bow - Not the name-dropping herself, damn. I wanna manifest that second pre-chorus btw 🤞 i need to see the light of manhattan. I truly love this song and I can tell it's very personal to her. she's had such an unbelievable career it's always interesting when she writes about it. loved this as the album closer!
this is my ttpd review. remember im just a girl who's only listened to this album twice so please dont drag me for these opinions. gonna do the anthology later!

tagged to post my 9 favourite album with commentary by @mathewbaldzal !!!! we r two peas in a pod i think with having a lot to say about some tunes...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in no particular order...
different class (1995) - pulp. this is not my no1 album of all time because i don't have a favorite album of all time, but this album is in part representative of "getting into music" to me. i love 90s britpop, whatever that means for a random american and this is my fav of em all (though i do actually quite rate this is hardcore in pulp's discography). "common people" is one of the songs of ALL TIME. god jarvis's little sing-song sleazyness gets me. really, really, really great classic performance of it at glasto 1995...for some reason "pencil skirt" also always really hits.
home video (2021) - lucy dacus. the newest album on this list by a long shot, but it's had songs in my top5 year end lists since it came out. i've also seen lucy live <3. this album rises above some of the others in similar company (punisher - phoebe bridgers, the boygenius ep, etc) because i never get tired of it. "first time" "hot & heavy" "brando" and "triple dog dare" are nearly always standbys in my listening history. probably gonna be an album-i-listened-to-in-college classic forever...
songs of love and hate (1971) - leonard cohen. maybe none of my favorite leonard cohen songs are on this album, but as a single work, this album stuns me. possibly the most transfixing 44:21 i've ever heard. his lyricism in particular is -- i can't even describe it. the mix with his voice, the sparseness of the instrumentation at time, the harmonies. i'm not a big stories guy but in this, yeah, the songwriting, the stories. i don't think there's another album like this one out there, really.
if you're feeling sinister (1998) - belle & sebastian. the first time i heard this album, i thought i had never heard an album so perfect. i love songs off of it but i nearly always listen to it whole. i love, love, love b&s's early sound (twee, if you will), and stuart murdoch's lyrics really, really shine. this is one of my favorite albums to listen to when i have a headache because it's lovely to just, focus on but not grating at all. i really love "judy and the dream of horses" and "get me away from here i'm dying". really, a beautiful work
rumours (1977) - fleetwood mac. i was sort of scrolling through some of my playlists trying to decide what to put on this list (it's a bit weighted towards stuff that's in rotation now) and i couldn't leave off fleetwood mac (in part to represent the huge part of my music taste that is like. classics 1965-1980). stevie nicks was one of my earlier music obsessions (the OG was the beatles). so many wonderful songs and riffs. i know this was left off the original 12-inch but "silver springs" is one of my favorite songs forever and ever and ever...
nebraska (1982) - bruce springsteen. when it comes down to it, this is my favorite springsteen album. i do think his 1975-1987 run of albums is pretty much perfect but nebraska is a masterpiece in a way that i find hard to express in words. there's a sense of sparseness and distance in this work (in part bc of how it was recorded) that i find so utterly compelling i can't even describe. "nebraska" - especially this 1984 live version - is a perfect song to me. perfect. i also like a lot of the stuff that went into inspiring this album (notably flannery o'connor) and well. where it fits into springsteen's narritivization of his own life (dude was in the dumps).
all killer, no filler (2001) - sum41. this pick is a little bit representative of the era of my life where i basically exclusively listened to pop punk but if songs of love and hate is an album that's perfectly drawn out, this is an album that's perfectly compressed. like, the title is correct. this album is fucking TIGHT. i used to listen to it at a job i hated to make the 30-min intervals go by. and it's got such classics...."fat lip"..."motivation..." of course, "in too deep." SO good.
what did you expect from the vaccines? (2011) - the vaccines. maybe this pick is a tiny bit cheesy but it is a perfect encapsulation of the era of alt rock it came from. which i love. i really like the vaccines, i think they're super fun and i did see them in concert finally and they totally lived up to that. "wetsuit" is again...one of my favorite songs of all time. "if you wanna" is a perpetual banger.
age of consent (1983) - new order. again, an album that deserves to be listened to whole, despite how good "age of consent" hits alone ever single time. sometimes i think i like another new order album more than this, but i don't. sumner's voice just out-of-tune ringing out over that sound, that new order sound, the bass, that post-punk club vibe. they're a band that don't sound like anyone else, and this is the album most indicative of that. wow, every time.
a few narrow misses
boxer (2007) - the national. i didn't get the national until one day i did. "slow show." my god. hello.
very (1993) - pet shop boys. it's too simple to say this is an album about gay love because it's so embedded in it's context but. this is an album with so much love. psb are brilliant.
the execution of all things (2002) - rilo kiley. jenny lewis CALL ME. also like. you know "a better son/daughter". there's more.
a thousand suns (2010) - linkin park. i used to listen to this at 6th grade cross-country practice. first band i ever got into on my own. idk.
this is not only my favorite albums but a pretty decent summation of the broad strokes my overall taste. thank you again for the tag!! i enjoyed doing this a lot :). idk who has done this/on what blogs so if u have PLEASEEEEE send it to me i want to see!! i tag @lfcrobbo @upthebrackets @girlfriendline @odegoob @amandaleveille @thelittlebirdthatkeptsomanywarm @kritischetheologie @bright-and-burning @a-corn-field if any of u want to but no presh!!!

Fortnight - post mortem
"Fortnight"
(feat. Post Malone)
"I was supposed to be sent away, but they forgot to come and get me
I was a functioning alcoholic till nobody noticed my new aesthetic
All of this to say, I hope you're okay, but you're the reason
And no one here's to blame, but what about your quiet treason?"
To be sent away is to be committed to the psych ward, or sent to jail. From the music video (MV) it seems that in this case it's a reference to an involuntary stay in the psych ward - she's chained up in a bed being made to take pills, however, asylums and prisons are a theme throughout the album as a whole.
Tumblr media
In the opening scenes of the video she is dressed up to look like 1920s movie starlet Clara Bow (who is referenced directly as a song title later on the album.) Her hair is pinned up with an extreme number of upside down bobby-pins which on the right side of her head make the roman numeral for 13, and she is wearing a wedding gown.
Clara Bow is known to have engaged in lavender marriages while having secret affairs with women during her stardom. "dropping hairpins" is a piece of historical queer slang, meaning dropping hints that one is queer, and the inverse, having your hair pinned up means that you're pretending to be straight. Hair pins reference back to the lyrics of Right Where You Left Me "Dust collected on my pinned-up hair." I read this scene as "maximum closeting," by force.
The entire room is shown to be upside down and at an angle which reminds me of the classic Emily Dickinson poem "tell all the truth but tell it slant" Given Emily is a favorite poet of TS the Dickinson reference is likely intentional and it's fair to assume that there are red herrings and metaphors in abundance throughout this song and this album. Remember the 'redherring' error code on the website pre-release.
This song and video also reference A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, which tells the story of a person released from prison who has mental health issues due to being tortured during their prison stay, who is then taken by their family from Paris(!) to London (!!) Book 2 of A Tale of Two Cities is titled "The Golden Thread" which reminds me of Invisible String "one single thread of gold tied me to you," and in the second book we're told the tale of how the golden haired daughter provides financially for her family in addition to repairing and maintaining their good reputation. A Tale of Two Cities feels oh so very appropriate as a touchstone for listening to this album.
"I was a functioning alcoholic" is this metaphorical, literal, or both? Other mentions of use and abuse of drugs and alcohol in her discography include Closure "I'm fine with my spite and my tears and my beers and my candles" Clean "Ten months sober" and Don't Blame Me "My drug is my baby I'll be using for the rest of my life" I think in this case I think it might be both metaphorical and literal. The loss of her love drove her to drink, but also, she was addicted to her illicit love and maybe got away with it until others noticed-?
"All of this to say, I hope you're okay, but you're the reason. And no one here's to blame, but what about your quiet treason?" reminds me again of the song Closure "It wasn't right the way it all went down looks like you know that now. Yes, I got your letter, Yes, I'm doing better. I don't need your closure" It's just as direct, but less aggressive in tone. She hopes her muse is well but they are the reason that she is where she is.
"And for a fortnight there, we were forever
Run into you sometimes, ask about the weather
Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors
Your wife waters flowers
I wanna kill her"
A fortnight is two weeks, though, it may be a metaphorical stand-in here just meaning that for awhile it seemed like they were going to be together forever, but now they are acquaintances who make small talk.
"Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors" reminds me of the ever so quotable line "Good Fences Make Good Neighbours" from Robert Frost's poem Mending Wall, the irony of the poem is that while setting clear boundaries with a wall prevents petty disputes over property lines the constant need to maintain the wall they've built brings the neighbours together to talk. The line is often quoted by people who've never read the poem without heed for the irony. As a reference here it seems very sarcastic - we're good neighbours look how polite and appropriate we are with our boundaries set in stone.
There are many references to gardens and flowers in the TS back catalogue but for me this in particular recalls the lyrics from Clean "The drought was the very worst. When the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst." and this line translates to me as I hate your partner because they're growing a relationship/family with you, whereas ours is dead.
Tumblr media
The MV shows TS wiping her face to reveal tattoos that almost match those of Post Malone who plays the part of love interest in the MV. The differences are the addition of two tattoos that spell out DDP, an extra heart, and a change from a playboy bunny to what looks like a diamond. The tattoos seem to have been covered with make-up while she was chained up in the asylum, and they disappear as soon as she steps out into the other room - only to reappear onto the face of Post Malone. I don't have any theories about what DDP stands for I would love to hear other peoples. Seeing TS with secret tattoos reminds me of Dress, "made your mark on me a golden tattoo." another song about secret love.
"All my mornings are Mondays stuck in an endless February
I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary"
Mondays being the most notoriously hated day of the week because it's the start of the work week for many people, and Feb being post-celebration winter in the northern hemisphere, I read this as - all I do is work I'm stuck in a bleak winter that won't end. I've tried every option available to get over you but it didn't work.
Tumblr media
When she enters the writers room she's wearing a mourning dress, which could lend another layer i.e. all my mournings are mondays i.e. all of my break-ups are work/business.
The whole video is in black and white except for the sparks that fly off the pages into the air between their desks, and the fire once she sets things ablaze.
"And I love you, it's ruining my life
I love you, it's ruining my life
I touched you for only a fortnight
I touched you
But I touched you"
This is pretty direct but in context I read it as - I'm still in love with you, I feel stuck, I can't move on and my public image won't let me let you in, we may have only been together for a short time but we were together and I can't/won't forget it.
Tumblr media
In the MV there are an endless array of masked figures also in black mourning attire, all with masks and hats sitting at identical desks disappearing into the horizon. Are these the other tortured poets from history, made to mask and hide behind their typewriters in a black and white world?
"And for a fortnight there, we were forever
Run into you sometimes, ask about the weather
Now you're in my backyard, turned into good neighbors
Your wife waters flowers
I wanna kill her
And for a fortnight there, we were together
Run into you sometimes, comment on my sweater
Now you're at the mailbox, turned into good neighbors
My husband is cheating
I wanna kill him"
"My husband is cheating I wanna kill him" This could be literal cheating, however, she is not literally married so maybe that's a hint - maybe he's violating the terms of a contract? After all she's probably not in love with him since she's pining so badly after the muse of this song-? So, why would she still want to murder him? Maybe they were supposed to get lavender-married but he cancelled the wedding and now everything is in upheaval?
Tumblr media
She is laying on the ground with PM in the middle of an image of herself made up of pages reading from "The Story of US" book, "So many things that I wish you knew. So many walls up, I can't break through" they seem to be stuck there and then they break free, pages flying in the air, and hold each other laughing. The tattoos are now gone from both faces.
Tumblr media
"I love you, it's ruining my life
I love you, it's ruining my life
I touched you for only a fortnight
I touched you
I touched you
I love you, it's ruining my life
I love you, it's ruining my life
I touched you for only a fortnight
I touched you
I touched you"
Tumblr media
In the MV she's back in the asylum now, hair undone/pins gone, strapped to a table surrounded by men about to have electro convulsive therapy (ECT) administered, a black dog runs through the frame. The ECG read-out is showing "I love you it's ruining my life" in the read out of her heart beat. One of the panels in the background reads "Master Control." In literature The Black Dog represents depression.
So, when her hair is unpinned she wants to be publicly out as in love with a woman, and the men who surround her and control her and her music deem it inappropriate, they want to 'fix' her. But, when the ECT runs sparks fly, the machinery overloads, she screams, and PM runs over to release her from the table.
Tumblr media
"Thought of calling ya, but you won't pick up
Another fortnight lost in America
Move to Florida, buy the car you want
But it won't start up till you touch, touch, touch me"
"Thought of calling ya, but you won't pick up. Another fortnight lost in America" You won't answer my calls so we've lost another fortnight of our lives to the American culture wars - reminds me of Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince and Paris, which are also songs about running away.
Tumblr media
They are now outside in a raging storm stuck on top of a mountain with treacherously steep sides, TS sits atop a phone box in a dress that looks like chain-mail, while PM is inside the box making a call begging..
"Move to Florida, buy the car you want but it won't start up till you touch, touch, touch me." TS has said in interview that moving to Florida in this album is a reference to people running away from their mistakes and starting fresh. She's telling the muse to ditch their partner and runaway with her, this ties back to Getaway Car which opens with "It was the best of times, the worst of crimes" which is a direct reference to A Tale of Two Cities which opens "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way".
"Thought of calling ya, but you won't pick up
Another fortnight lost in America
Move to Florida, buy the car you want
But it won't start up till I touch, touch, touch you"
Tumblr media
TS is back in the writers room, tearing open the draws, letting the pages fly into the air, crying, then stone faced in her mourning dress while the pages swirl around her burning. It reminds me of Dear Reader "Dear reader, burn all the files desert all your past lives" The version of her in the asylum smashes down the window.
Tumblr media
And finally the version of TS on top of the phone box reaches down and holds hands with PM. She's created imagery of herself stuck inside cages, boxes, glass boxes, etc over and over through the years and this is the first time we've seen her outside and making contact with another human.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: our protagonist has been held by force in the image of a virginal heterosexual bride, going slowly insane while she pretends that the woman she truly loves is just a friend, and she's now completely fed up and her bearding situation has gone to hell, she's asking her love to runaway with her and she's willing to metaphorically set fire to her history/her body of work to be with the one she loves.

idk if you seen this but SMFD is going to be a single which is very interesting to me for a few reasons one being we are past the time to release singles to promote the album and it's also not due to popularity bc according to spotify the most listen to non-single is fake out. my best assumption as to why is to promote the upcoming tour
I have a few theories on why SMFDS tho bc it is an odd choice. don't get me wrong I love that song but it's a song you really appreciate having also listened to the rest of the album and it's very good in concert but imo you release a single so it can be played on the radio for whatever reason (as a album teaser, it got popular) which is why I think it's about promotion and not radio. SMFSD is like THE track in terms of representation for the album for a lot of reasons to me so it makes sense they'd use it to promote their tour to fans who likely have listened to the album. also I suspect we'll get a SMFSD music video which I'll be excited to see (I do hope it has a little story line like the other mvs from this era rather than just clips from tourdust but we'll see)
I am FASCINATED by SMFS as a single, not because I don't love the song (it's one of my favorites on the whole album, I adore it), not because I don't think it's a super-strong song (lyrically I think it's transcendent in how it nails a very true emotion and musically I think it's complex and smart), but because it doesn't really strike me as my idea of a radio song, as you say. So yeah, this feels like an emotional choice rather than a marketing-based one, which also feels right to them. Their contractual situation makes their record label pretty hands-off, I think, so they can kind of do what they want. And maybe the song being labeled one of the top ten songs of the year by Time, or whatever that was, made them think that it deserved more attention not just by fans.
I'm sure the music video will be intensely plotted and silly because I genuinely think that's how they like to make music videos and I would be surprised if it's just tour footage, but we'll see.
I have a theory about Fake Out. To me that song seems like such an obvious single and I've always been surprised it didn't get a big push last summer. But I think once the new We Didn't Start the Fire dropped and ended up performing so strongly for them (and over the entire summer building gradually), they didn't want to crowd it out and let it play out. But I think Fake Out is definitely a summer song. It's a roll the windows down song to me and always has been since the first time I heard. Whereas SMFS is a perfect winter song (I'm in a winter mood dreaming of spring...). I wonder if they'll try to ride the album out a little longer and push Fake Out this summer. I wouldn't be entirely surprised, because I think there are no real rules anymore over when you can push a single from an album.

My Personal First Take On The Songs
If you want to know what runs thru my head on the first day of an album release, here you go. Don't hold it against me please.
A little hard on Matty at times, but the man is very flawed. Still love him, but seems he needs to continue to work on himself.
I only included things that I noticed that are not included in the few main people article.
This is also just some of me working things out in my head. Take it with a grain of salt. I work thru about 100 different interpretations of her songs before I settle on an interpretation.
Track 1: Fortnight
Nothing overly specific or notable. Potential connection to Matty showing up in NYC with Gabbriette in her backyard right after their break up.
Could also just be referencing the fact that he now lives mostly in the US it appears. Between LA and NYC most likely.
"I love you, but its ruining my life" could have also been something Matty said to her
Track 2: The Tortured Poets Dept
Honestly "Like a Tattooed Golden Retriever" is one of my favorite goofy lyrics on this album.
Context for non swifties: Her putting actual peoples names in a song is insanely rare. I can only recall a handful of times and its been years and years ago. Mentioning Lucy and Jack specifically is insane.
Track 3: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
"But you should have seen him when he first got me" All I can think of is Matty at most of the shows from his birthday 2023 till when they went public in Nashville. He was beaming almost every single night on stage. It was so fun to see.
Track 4: Down Bad
"Did you really beam me up. In a cloud of spring dust" Just to do experiments on me?" I am getting a mix of Matty's lab and kind of the Cava interview. Taylor maybe wondering if he she was just an experiment to him.
"I'll build you a fort on some planet. Where they can all understand it. How dare you think it's romantic, leaving me safe and stranded". Reference to Matty's fort. Taylor saying she could figure out a way where they could have their love and his fort and she could make people understand. Him instead leaving her stranded to "save her".
Track 5: So Long, London
Truly a song for London referencing mostly Joe. After multiple English boyfriends that never worked, she is done with the city.
Track 6: But Daddy I Love Him
"They slammed the door on my whole world. The one thing I wanted" She was finally happy and professed that before playing Question?. She was the happiest she had ever been and everything made sense and she made it known. But instead of being happy for her, they slammed the door in her face and ruined it.
"I'm having his baby, No I'm not, but you should see your faces" A very funny line, thats a little unusual for her. Trying to make a funnier album then BFIAFL?
"We came back when the heat died down. Went to my parents and they came around".
Referring to when they tried to date in 2014/2015? And then coming back around in 2023?
Or referencing when we assume they broke up in early July- then the rumors they were still trying to work something out after that.
Track 7: Fresh Out the Slammer
Confirmation that Matty and T were something prior to her and Joe being completely finished.
"Splintered back in winter, silent dinners, bitter". Winter of 2022?
"Camera Flashes, Welcome Bashes. Get the matches, toss the ashes off the ledge" - She was ready to go public and knew it would get negative attention. She was fine with burning it all down. Also a reference to the Lover House being burnt down during the Era's tour.
"Starting Line" reference
Track 8: Florida
Florida was the first Eras tour she did after her breakup with Joe was announced.
"And my friends all smell like weed or little babies" Such a good lyric. Typical late 20s, early 30s.
Track 9: Guilty as Sin
Backing track is almost identical to About You
"Downtown Lights" reference. Sent to her while she was still with Joe and "bored and caged". Around Jan/February 2023?
"I keep these longings locked, in lowercase inside a lock" - clue of some sort?
Track 10: Who's Afraid of Little Ole Me
To the press and the fans?
Track 11: I Can Fix Him
"They shake their heads saying god help her when I tell them he's my man" - funny line
Texas - Roadkill?
"His hands so calloused from his pistol, softly traces hearts on my face" Reference to his callouses from playing the guitar and his pistol being his songs?
Track 12: loml
Chicago secret song and her crying during "did I dodge a bullet or just lose the love of my life"
"Mr. Steal Your Girl" besides the pop culture reference, Matty's MO lately has been winning over taken women.
"You shit talked me under the table" ???? Who would this have been to?
*** addendum: he talked more shit then her. Like he could drink her under the table.... he shit talked her under the table*** THANK YOU
"I wish I could un-recall how we almost had it all" - A reference back to Me and You Together Song and About You
Track 13: I Can Do It With a Broken Heart
Chicago shows and beyond.
" I'm so depressed, I act like it's my birthday". Another funny line.
"I keep finding his things in drawers. Crucial evidence, I didn't imagine the whole thing" The Damn Beatles Shirt
"As the crowd was chanting More!" - as the crowd cheers for an overdose?
"Im so obsesses with him, but he avoids me like the plague" - The damn Beatles shirt.....
I do wonder if this is some sort of a slight to Matty for the fact that he does tend to be more emotional on stage, but especially after their breakup.....
Track 14: The Smallest Man
The sigh........
"They just ghosted you, now you know what it feels like" Oh Matty.....
When not in public with her he was stoned. Once he had her, he wasn't interested.
"Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead? Did you sleep with a gun underneath our bed? Were you writing a book? Were you a sleeper cell spy? In fifty years will all this be declassified?" Taylors confusion about if it was real or just a "bit". Flashback to Radio 1 and Matty confidently mentioning the possibility of it being a "bit". In his lab coat. Referencing back to her wondering if it was all an experiment.
"You'll slide into inboxes and slip through the bars" Matty's MO of finding random girls to date.
"You crashed my party and your rental car" Reference to him crashing his rental car in LA after returning from Malaysia. No idea why I find it so funny that she knew about this.
Is she referring to him crashing an actual party? Or just crashing her party of them getting a happy ever after?
"You said normal girls were boring, but you were gone by morning" Referencing that girls like Meredith, Ana and Charlotte were boring?
"You kicked out the stage lights, but you're still performing" - reference to the fact that no one can tell when he is performing or when he is being real. He's not on stage, but he's performing.
Track 15: The Alchemy
"The hospital was a drag" - The perceived psych hospital she was in after Matty?
"I haven't been around in so long, but I am making a comeback to where I below" Referencing dating an American again?
"He said its Heroin, but this time with an "e"" A wordplay used in multiple songs by emo/punk bands. ie: Boys Like Girls. Silverstein.
Track 16: Clara Bow:
Song mostly about Travis but layered with Matty/ 75 items
"Breath of fresh air thru the smoke rings" Travis verse Matty
"Stevie Nicks/ 75" "Half moonshine, a full eclipse" Reference back to Question? and "Half moon eyes/ big surprise"
"Beauty and the Beast"
"You look like Taylor Swift" "You've got edge she never did. The futures bright. Dazzling" Back to "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now, because she's dead" and lead into Rep. Reference back to Bejeweled and "The Band"
The Black Dog:
The Black Dog - Bar in London
"When someone plays the Starting Line and you jump old. But she's too young to know this song, that was intertwined in the magic fabric of our dreaming." "Old habits die screaming" Matty returned to dating girls decently younger than him, who wouldn't know his references. Reminded of him mentioning how hard it finds it to relate to Gen Z anymore.
More references to him "acting" in real life.
"And remember, how my rain-soaked body was shaking" Most likely Referencing after the Nashville rain show or the Gillette rain show.
"Were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke?" Back to radio 1 and Matty saying is it real or is it all a bit?
"Now I want to sell my house and set fire to all my clothes" Burning down the lover house? New part or Era's tour? New outfits?
The other obvious connections of Matty having Mayhem.... A Black dog....
imgonnagetyouback: --- all lowercase
I am going to get you back, and I am going to get you back for hurting me double meaning
Into is almost identical to Looking for Somebody to Love
Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus:
"Hands in the hair of somebody in darkness, Named Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus and I just watched it happen". The fact Matty was out with all sorts of other people and she just watched
"And you saw my bones out with somebody new, who seemed like they would've bullied you in school and you just watched it happen" - The fact she was with Travis and he didn't do anything or say anything.
"I changed into goddesses, villains and fools. Changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules all to outrun my desertion of you. And you just watched it" - Taylor re-arranged her life for him. Broke all her own "rules" for him and he let her (all to ghost her in the end)
"If you want to tear my world apart, just say you've always wondered". When Matty and her re-connected he must have said he always wondered what they could be if they tried again, or something along those lines. Then he tore her world apart.
"And if you have some kids with an internet starlet, will that make your memory fade from this scarlet maroon" A throwback to Maroon being about Matty. A song she play over and over as her "secret song" for Era's.
"Will I always wonder" Because he ghosted and she never got closure.
Peter:
Throwback to Cardigan and the line "Peter losing Wendy"
"Lost to the Lost Boys chapter of your life. Forgive me, Peter, please know that I tried". He never did grow up. She was tired of waiting.

9 favorite albums in no particular order under the cut:
*** just as a sidenote, because i like too much music, i'm doing albums i like as cohesive units. albums that hold together and tell a story. albums that i listen to from start to finish because the songs go together in a particular order in my mind, for whatever reason.
strange trails by lord huron. world's most perfect story album. need i even elaborate. maybe my favorite album of all time. the musical & lyrical motifs that carry through the whole thing, the examination of romance and death and the way they intertwine, the whole convoluted multi-character storyline that underlies it. if you like folk music and undeath and evil women, please for the love of god listen to this album.
we were dead before the ship even sank by modest mouse. world's second most perfect story album. now, if you were to ask me, hey, what IS the story this album is trying to tell? i couldn't begin to answer. but this album is just. omg. the tone is so cohesive throughout while still allowing for changes in register, concept, and overall sound. also has the best opening line to an album in the history of albums.
so much for stardust by fall out boy. okay this one's a gimme but come on. pop-punk retrospective on the state of the world since 2016? with lyricism that makes me weep? came out just weeks after i the birthday where i realized that i wanted to be alive for the first time in like three years? it's not even close.
jenny from thebes by the mountain goats. NOW LISTEN. i knowww it's just the most recent mountain goats album. why, you might be asking, did i not go for beat the champ instead? and the answer is i can only choose 9 albums and i think jenny from thebes is underrated. life-changing lyricism with orchestral instrumentation that could tear me in half. also i've talked so much about it on this blog i think it would be wrong of me not to mention it.
in sickness and in flames by the front bottoms. talk about cohesion!!!!! a whole album that is essentially a love letter to all the messiest parts of a relationship! all the characters are so interesting and flawed!! and every single one of the songs are unapologetically horny to boot. also just the transitions between songs are soooooooo good. not to be the 'jerk/the truth' guy but um. the switch from jerk into the truth is one of my all-time faves.
doom days by bastille. i'm an apocalypse junkie. next.
science from an easy chair by have gun, will travel. this is entirely the wrong blog but HEY. if anyone out there likes the terror, this album is for you. it's a story concept album about ernest shackleton's expedition to antarctica aboard the endurance. the first song i heard from it was the rescue party, which is one of the most atmospheric story-focused folk songs i've ever heard. just unbelievably emotional and smart. love it.
lungs by florence + the machine. you've seen my recent posts. howl & kiss with a fist & i'm not calling you a liar & rabbit heart & my boy builds coffins &. well. you get it.
mixtape for the milky way by mixtape for the milky way. hi fellow minnesotans. go listen to jeremy messersmith's side project album about being raised in a fundamentalist christian cult. go on. noooo it won't hurt you. don't worry it's not heartbreaking at all. it's not my favorite album of his since the silver city or anything haha that would be crazy. 👀
ok that got way too long whoops BUT thank you to the folks who tagged me!! i love chatting music so if u see this & want to make your own PLEASE tag me !!!

hi i'm skeeverboy and here's my review of every tfb album (not including singles or eps but maybe i will at some point)
I Hate My Friends (2008)
Tumblr media
despite being their first and least finished albums, it is one of my fav albums of all time. it's unique and definitely not for everyone, but the garage/basement sound and unique vocals are so charming. it has this whole immature feeling in both instrumentation and lyrics that i'm just obsessed with. i really like the background vocals and the entire shouty kind of singing this one has.
fav track: push-ups
rating: 9.5/10
My Grandma Vs. Pneumonia (2009)
Tumblr media
very similar in sound and vibe to IHMF, with the same acoustic recorded-in-someone's-basement feeling (this is because both albums were in fact recorded in random basements and garages). it feels a little more finished than IHMF, and the songs have a bit of a different vibe that i don't know how to explain. ultimately though i put it in the same category as IHMF and frequently forget which songs are in which albums.
fav track: the bass is too loud
rating: 9/10
The Front Bottoms (2011)
Tumblr media
absolutely amazing album. it has all the charm of the first 2, with significantly more development and more of a finished feeling. it starts off with an amazing first track and there's really not a dud on this album at all. both versions of the cover art are beautiful. the lyrics in this album are just like some of my favorite of all time and often times soul crushing. i love it. enough said.
fav track: looking like you just woke up
rating: 10/10
Talon of the Hawk (2013)
Tumblr media
another absolute banger. it has a lot of the same vibes as self titled, though it started getting a lot higher energy. while still angsty and gut-punching, it's also a lot easier to jam out to than their self-titled, with more electric guitar featured and absolutely banger choruses. maybe a little bit overrated, but a great album nonetheless.
fav track: santa monica
rating: 9/10
Back On Top (2015)
Tumblr media
another one of my favorites. it's nearly completely abandoned the more acoustic feeling, aside from chunks of songs like the beginning of West Virginia. pretty much every song can be either cried to or rocked out to in the car. even though there is one song on this album that i kind of hate (summer shandy) the rest of them more than make up for it. fun electric guitar parts, the epic wind section in 2YL, the hard hitting lyrics in songs like Plastic Flowers, it's all just amazing.
fav track: ginger
rating: 10/10
Going Grey (2017)
Tumblr media
everyone hates me for my opinion on this album but ultimately it's just kind of meh for me. it's not bad, but it's my least favorite TFB album. the entire sound of the album isn't my favorite, and at times the vocals feel a little dull, which i mean the vocals are like the number one reason why i love the front bottoms. some of the lyrics leave something to be desired, especially considering past songs.
i don't hate the album though. it's high energy, really transitioned TFB into IS&IF and YAWYHOW smoothly. it has a lot of good songs while remaining pretty true to the core TFB sound.
fav track: trampoline
rating: 7.5/10 (don't crucify me please)
In Sickness & In Flames (2020)
Tumblr media
ok on my tier list i admit i ranked this one way too low. it pushed the band into a new direction, with the autotune and the way more developed and finished sounding instrumentals. pretty much every song is high energy and catchy. it strays way more into the pop side of tfb's pop punk/emo sound, which is fine but not exactly my thing. i think they do it in a really graceful way though and most songs on here are bangers
fav track: bus beat
rating: 8/10
You Are Who You Hang Out With (2023)
Tumblr media
this one is significant for me because it was their first full-length album they released while i was actively a huge fan. it was exciting and i heard a few of the songs before the album's release live, so i'm definitely biased in this one. the autotune is a little weird, but it works for me. the mix between brian's unique voice and the autotune and just the general sound of it are really good.
i'll admit it did take me a minute for it to grow on me, especially as an early tfb girlie, but grow on me it did. outlook and batman both feel like really nice tie-backs to the older sound, almost sounding like they're from TOTH or back on top?? and the newer, weirder songs (i'm looking at you Paris) work really well with the sound of album and such.
fav track: batman
rating: 9.5/10

its 🕯️ again, i have more airy hcs. im projecting onto him bc i kin him and i love him
in addition to duster airy would listen to sign crushes motorist. his favorite album from them is hurting which he has listened to countless times and he has interpretations for all of the song lyrics. his favorite song from that album would either be wedding night or im always here but he might have a hard time choosing one.
airy also wears fingerless gloves because of sensory issues and he likes how the look so he rarely takes them off.
he doesnt rlly. understand sarcasm or social cues.
when he types he would use :) and :(
i feel like her would add the single space in between the faces like : ) and : ( or maybe add a nose like :▪︎)

BSD Music Hcs - Armed Detective Agency 🫶
(Made using American music as a basis because I'm not familiar with the Japanese music scene. More based around general tastes rather than specific genres and songs)
Atsushi, Dazai, Kunikida, Kenji, Kyouka, Ranpo, Yosano, and Fukuzawa below
Atsushi
• He's obviously not going to have the most... well rounded taste in music due to his strict upbringing
• in fact, many people would likely make fun of him for having "basic" taste in music
• while I don't think he'd have gone his whole childhood without hearing anything, I think it'd be heavily restricted to radio hits and maybe classical music.
• So, Atsushi would likely have a lot of more popular, recent songs in his playlists.
• I think he'd be very open to new music, though. The songs on his playlist he hasn't heard listening to the radio are ones recommended by the agency members!
• He's always glad to listen to something that his friend likes, and he generally enjoys it too.
• However, I think he'd lean towards hip-hop (maybe rap. depends on his mood) in terms of favorites. I think he'd like the Weeknd but I don't know why
• I think he'd also enjoy indie music. since he didn't grow up hearing music as much as other people, he's more open to new sounds and experimental genres
• I don't think he'd like radiohead, though.
• He won't pay for spotify premium.
Dazai
• Probably pirates his music.
• Dazai is very hard for me to understand, so please excuse how short this may be.
• nobody really knows what he listens to, he'll tell different people he enjoys different artists.
• i think if he was alone, he'd listen to slower music.
• it doesn't necessarily have to be sad, but he'll be fine if it is.
• He listens to music with softer singing/lyrics to sort of slow down and process his day. It calms him and helps him focus on what's happened. Think Cigarettes after sex type beat.
• At work though? He listens to very upbeat music• His personal favorite is "Pump up The Jam" by Technotronic. It gets on kunikida's nerves. Dazai will sing it, hum it, blast it on the agency computer.
• Leave him alone!!! he's pumping up the jam!!
• He also takes recommendations from the agency, but they're never listened to or acknowledged publicly
• He's heard every song Atsushi recommends him, but indulges atsushi anyways
• Dazai would listen to their recs in secret though. and hold each one very dear to him.
Kunikida
• The one who's supposed to be in charge of the agency's background music.
• While he'd play clean music for the agency, I think his music taste would consist of very vulgar language
• Not intentionally, of course. The songs that fit his ideals for music will have their strange aspects and that's okay
• Any songs with themes against his ideals (Glorifying murder, probably whatever the fuck is going on in Mr. Brightside) he prefers not to listen to.
• I think he'd like romantic songs, but he'd keep to himself about it. He seems like a romantic at heart
• He also enjoys upbeat music to get himself into a working mood (if he isn't already)
• I think he'd enjoy the Red hot chili peppers. this came to me while writing and I'll die by it now
• When people recommend him music, he doesn't listen to it immediately, but once he gets free time he'll focus solely on the song he's listening to
• He'll tell a person their music is good no matter what, but if it's not to his taste he'll express that very politely
• Unless it's Dazai. Dazai will be cursed out very harshly if he plays "Pump up the jam" again
• doesn't pay for premium music services, but complains about ads regardless
• he has a playlist for every. single. mood. his music is meticulously organized
Kenji
• If anyone told you "they love all types of music," they didn't love as many as Kenji. He'll listen to anything
• i think his favorite music, though, is local music.
• He'll save any song made by someone from his hometown, no matter what it is.
• Local garage punk band? He'll buy the album. Recording from a town festival? He'll find an upload of it and save it.
• Super, super open about what he listens to. you can ask him about one song and be bombarded with favorites of his
• While he has very diverse taste, I think he leans slightly towards more upbeat country music.
• He grew up with early Taylor swift (please forgive me this is the only country artist I know and she's not even country) and the likes
• He has a habit of humming a different song while working every day.
• i think he'd have a playlist for everything, but he always forgets to add his new songs to them.
• He has a playlist for sleeping, mostly calm music with rain sounds. It's not something he necessarily needs but it's a small comfort
• You can't just "recommend a song" to Kenji. If someone tells him about a song they think he'd like, he'd pull out his ear buds right then and there and offer them one to listen together
• Very cheerful about recs, always enjoys them no matter what they are.
• doesn't pay for premium music, and doesn't mind ads at all
Kyouka
• I think, like atsushi, she doesn't really have the most diverse music taste but she's also a teenage girl so.
• I think the mafia influenced her taste a bit, but she's largely built her own playlist through trying new things.
• She likes popular music that's currently trending, but leans more towards softer/cuter music.
• I feel like she enjoys vocaloid, but isn't obsessed with it.
• the same goes for K-pop, Kyouka wouldn't religiously listen to it but she would have a few favorite idols that she follows
• She gets very (invisibly) excited to show atsushi new songs she found, and sharing song discoveries is a favorite pasttime of theirs.
• Kyouka is 13. She's going through a phase where she needs angsty music in her life.
• I think one of her favorites would be "Sleep to Dream" by Fiona Apple. this is just the vibe
• She actually is allowed the aux at the agency! She's much too insecure about her music taste to put any songs on, though.
• Kyouka regularly asks her fellow agency members for recs, but never really gets back to them about the songs.
• It's best to assume she wouldn't ask them for more recommendations if she didn't enjoy the previous ones, though.
Ranpo
• Always understands the theme behind a song but doesn't really care. Ranpo really just likes funky beats.
• I think he'd listen to a lot of electronic music, or things that are electronic-adjacent, or things that I mistake for electronic music. Things like Major Tom by Peter Schilling
• He also listens to a lot of older and more familiar classic rock songs. This is Fukuzawa's doing.
• He doesn't really care to check the artist of a song, so his playlists are very erratic. He's got a bunch of the same songs by a couple artists, then the rest is Russian roulette.
• Only one playlist. Of everything he likes.
• He shares an account with Fukuzawa and Yosano.
• He could probably read a person's entire personality through their music, but he wouldn't
• In fact, if you want Ranpo to listen to something, you'll have to beg him and remind him constantly to listen to your song
• It's not that he doesn't care, necessarily, it's that he just doesn't consider trying new music very often
• Ranpo is someone who would be very comfortable with their taste and not seek much change from what's familiar.
• I don't think he'd enjoy higher pitched voices that cut over the music.
• That being said, Ranpo also has very strong authority over the agency's background music. He doesn't add much, though
• He completely supports the Pump up the jam agenda. He'll even sing it with Dazai, occasionally
Yosano
• I think she'd listen to primarily female artists, and keep up with what her favorite artists are doing
• One of her favorite songs has been Poker Face by Lady Gaga ever since she was young.
• I think she'd be very into having soundtracks from her favorite movies! She knows a lot of artists and songs through this
• outside of movie soundtracks, she'll listen to a lot of pop, but not present day pop
• I think Yosano would enjoy popular songs of an era well past their time
• this isn't because she's out of touch with trends, she'd just enjoy songs from around the 2010s more.
• Yosano also knows plenty of classic rock, but doesn't listen to it all that often. This is Fukuzawa's doing.
• However, she keeps up with Riot grrrl music almost religiously. It's one of her favorite genres.
• She has a separate playlist to play as background music in her office.
• Kunikida has no reign over this section of the agency.
• The doctor's office is a lawless land.
• He doesn't mind though, because she doesn't play it all that loud while she's working. In fact, if she doesn't have patients, she'll often just use her ear buds from the computer
• Yosano takes music recommendations, sparingly. If someone gives her consistently bad songs, she'll start lying to them about listening.
• however, she's always up to chat about lyric interpretations and news on artists for songs she does enjoy.
Fukuzawa
• He may be an "old man" to most people, but he's actually only 40-something. I can never put my finger on what year bsd takes place in, but regardless I think he'd enjoy 80's and 90's hits.
• He's not been to many concerts, especially in recent years, but when he was younger and not yet "involved in his career" I think he'd visit plenty of live performances.
• Everyone who works at the agency has heard Bohemian Rhapsody several times.
• He doesn't generally listen to new music because he's comfortable with his current tastes
• however, his "current tastes" consist of so, so many songs• if you asked him what he thought of any artist, he'd probably tell you he'd heard of them.
• While he's a very private man, I think he was also very excited to introduce Ranpo and Yosano to his music
• He didn't look excited to show them his songs, but inside he was genuinely glad to share the music he's loved so dearly for very long• I think all three of them have danced together, at least once. I know it's not in character but please indulge me
• Fukuzawa pays for spotify premium, but shares an account with Ranpo and yosano.
• The profile picture for this account is a cat.
• it took him a bit to get used to the digital music services, so he kept all his cd's. He's got a lot of them, and has even burned a few himself
• I think he'd burn cd's for the agency members as a Christmas gift. most of them don't own a cd player, but they appreciate it!
• He enjoys getting recommendations from other people, and will always give them honest feedback.
• he's a bit confused by more recent songs, but he enjoys the trends and innovations made in the music industry
