I suppose a tense and fraught chapter about the parade job where V is trying not to keel over and die is a good a place as any to drop my personal headcanons on input peripherals that don't involve an actual keyboard. Actually I have a lot of thoughts about the different kinds of i/o available and who uses them and when, and what their limitations are, but they're not yet coherent.

Basically: V has the ability to control and interact with the computer slotted into her head without speaking, typing, or gesturing, but it's really kind of a bitch to operate if you're still piloting your body in meatspace and not a netrunner chair. Considering how the relic deals with two brains that have adapted to very different kinds of cyberware (Johnny's arm v. V's network proprioception for instance) and how that complicates a theoretical soul-powered slap fight is also Very Interesting to me.

#found myself asking the question: if johnny can control V in short bursts if he's motivated enough #what senses or muscles or fine control might he lack? #is it a sort of first come first serve situation on who's operating this muscle? twitch chat overload? #johnny knows how to do normal Human things but what if the muscle is actually some mental cue #a sort of metaphorical phantom limb he has trouble even understanding feedback from much less operating #anyway. food for thought

Introducing Vega Howse, known to Night City as V. After vanishing during a raid on Arasaka Tower for two years, she has suddenly returned to Night City. Problem is, this isn't the same V that walked into Arasaka Tower on that fateful May day.

Alt's plan did not go as well as hoped. As soon as she penetrated Mikoshi and seized control of Soulkiller, Mikoshi came apart quicker than she was expecting. Forced by Mikoshi coming apart around her, risking Alt being damaged, she acted quickly, but not quickly enough to separate Johnny and V's personalities from the engram.

She fused them instead, but before she could return it to V's body, or take it with her beyond the Blackwall, her connection was severed, and the new engram was cast adrift into the deepest parts of cyberspace. The new engram was not conscious of what happened, and neither were V or Johnny. After what would've felt like a few minutes, but what was closer to a few years, the engram, controlled by a desire to return to meatspace, found a hole in a corporate data fortress.

Biotechnica had constructed the means to clone humans on a large scale. In collaboration with Arasaka, they used technology developed for the Relic to produce an army of clone soldiers for the inevitable next corporate war. The brains of the clones functioned as a blank receptacle for a default personality with military programming, far quicker and more efficient than having to train an army of recruits.

When the engram broke into the subnet, it functioned like a virus, taking over a cloning vat and replacing the genetic sequence programmed into it with the genetic data of V included in the engram (due to integration with the Relic). However, the fusing of the two engrams resulted in overwritten data. The clone is more accurately a combination of Johnny and V's genetic data.

As Vega grows in consciousness and gains new skills and experience, she will gradually subsume and eventually overwrite both the original V and Johnny alike. It is a slow, impending death of personality for both, a grim ending, all things considered. However, they both have the unique and powerful ability to influence Vega as she learns who she is. For all intents and purposes, she is V, but she’s also Johnny, and at the same time, her own person.

Together, they are a chorus, assembled by fate and the unfortunate truth of life in 2077: there are no true happy endings in Night City. V gets to live, but also the original V will soon fade from existence, as will Johnny; however, they will never truly fade away.

The wind did knock down some of the really good red apples from the top of the tree, by the way. But they'd hit the house and the ground so hard that they bruised really bad :( I didn't bother sifting through them for one that wasn't mushy. the uh... “discourse”???? around slurs in Homestuck sure is something because people like to fight tooth and nail for their existence in the comic, but in a way that is simply... odd.

most of these shitfests about derogatory language in media involve people who publicly advertise how fucking Cool they are because they Like Things That Are Offensive complaining about how the Liberal SJW Snowflake Democrat Tumblrite Triggered Buzzword Buzzwords are mad at words so they will Cancel Culture the media and they should something something Grow A Spine Man Up Go To The Real World something something.

but in Homestuck’s case you’ll have fans who really want to defend the slur usage as some sort of fight to preserve the work. the discussion of how Homestuck is preserved is a good one, but like

sure, the language, much like anything else in the comic, is a part of this period piece the work exists as, a very much at the time sort of thing. it’s the late 2000s, Hussie hangs out in forums with edgelords, they’re also Some White Guy who grew up in The Slurs Part of America.

Homestuck Made This World actually goes into this pretty well:

Michael: Old internet history, there's a lot of bad and offensive stuff in there, and some of that comes through into the comic.

CMRN: It was mainstream humor, that's what's kinda weird about it, and that's something that's easy to forget now, right? Y'know there was a popular film in the early 2000s where Johnny Knoxville cons his way into the Special Olympics, and every prank TV show from Jackass to The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, everyone remembers that, people get into X, to uh-  Gosh, what was the Ashton Kutcher one?

Michael: Uh, Punk'd.

CMRN: Uh, yeah, trucker hat, you're right. And that, right? So there was this kind of like general, just like, extremely virulent anti-disability, you know anti-disabled people, element to humor, which I don't really know that was such a prominent thing. Maybe it was at the point where, you know for example, certain forms of race based humor just didn't play anymore, so mainstream comedy had to find a place where it was acceptable to, you know, hate certain people essentially? I don't quite know one or another, but I actually associate Hussie quite often, of course the R-word was used constantly and regularly by basically everyone, I mean it was a huge kind of corner stone of both internet and real world meatspace culture. But for whatever reason, I have this, in mind, Hussie relationship to particularly that form of humor.

Michael: We are going to see what happens when the internet specifically drifts away from this, or not even drifts away, that's putting it too softly. Internet culture, sort of fan culture, is going to pivot away from that type of humor pretty hard. And we can so those tensions bubble up into the comic when we get to those points. Cause of course, you mention, you know, the R-word, it's used, not liberally, but regularly I think throughout kind of the opening acts of Homestuck. And it's one of those things that really jumps out to me looking back, because it did not jump out at me in 2008-2009, right?

CMRN: Yeah.

Michael: Like, I am not free from this, I was never like, y'know, above all of this. I too am a product of culture, and it is bizarre to kind of go back and notice things like that and be like "Oh yeah, we were just like, dropping that, and that was kind of messed up!"

CMRN: Yeah, I think one thing that is important is to even have like a short historical kind of memory about this kind of thing, because yeah, like I was just saying. The R-word and making fun of people with intellectual disabilities, just broadly, was a corner stone of comedy, I would say that maybe one third of jokes, period, from stand up to- I mean, this is obviously a little bit of hyperbole, it's not straight up a third, but if you look at sketch comedy from the time, from its mainstream to whatever obscure, you're gonna find a huge amount of that, that's a massive part of it. And it was just part of our comedy culture, I mean, that's a historical reality, and it's a historical reality that we live through. And I guess the beneficial thing, or the good thing, obviously there is no good thing about doing that, but the good thing of living in the moment that we do now, is that we seem to have, as a culture, completely gotten rid of that, or at least in parts of culture who were not interested in just trolling other people and purposefully offending other people. I think for the most part everyone, or people were in involved in cultural production have realized "Yeah that was- that was pretty bad. Like, why are we engaging in that." And that's heartening. But yeah, it was just a part of it. And I agree, while reading this kind of section that we read for episode one, it really sticks out when it shows up. But also, if you're reading Homestuck and you're like "Ah, that's kind of a bummer that that's showing up." Or "That's awful that that's showing up." The way it's just peppered in and used normally in conversation is the way it was used in 2008-2009 by many many people, obviously not everyone, obviously some people realized how bad that was, but I would say the majority of conversation. Certainly the people I went to high school with, and even when I was in college was when this was kind of moving out, and certainly when I got to college is when I was like "Oh, this, you shouldn't say this. This is bad."

but many arguments about how humor and language was back in that context is often used to absolve Hussie from any sort of blame. they didn’t mean to do it, it just seemed fun! what’s a little slur usage between online besties? however, you see, not everyone who lived in the 2000s was a massive bigot and/or liked dropping slurs. I can tell you that because I was there and I was not racist, actually. at the same time as 4chan and Something Awful users were spewing whatever you could find in the depths of the Wikipedia page for every racial slur in existence, you’d have high school to college campaigns, TV PSAs, informative pamphlets, and whatnot yelling in your face that you should probably not say slurs because slurs are kind of bad. it was “acceptable” in some areas to throw around an r-word, but there was certainly a pushback.

it’s not even like Hussie just suddenly stopped using these words afterwards, because they gladly repeat the r-word a million different times in a paragraph of commentary for Act 2 in its Topatoco book print, which was published in 2012.

in other words, no, Hussie was not an innocent victim of the Big Internet Hivemind that decided that people should say slurs as a form of greeting, they were a human being who made a conscious choice to add these words to their work.

they don’t add anything, they’re only in the comic because that’s how Hussie spoke at the time and for some reason they couldn’t keep them out of their mouth.

and I’m serious on that last bit because some are thrown around from Rose and in the narration of Jade’s perspective and... no... they wouldn’t say that.

the goth girl who tries her hardest to look highbrow and the ray of sunshine herself would never utter such foul language that’s literally just Hussie speaking through them.

on the other side of the coin I’ve seen fans recommend new readers to download the Homestuck Slur Replacement Project mod to make the experience more comfortable, that’s good.

but also a lot of them act like it’s just the slurs that make the comic a hard sell in terms of controversy, and

there’s still a lot of fucking weird shit. the entire work is not suddenly completely accessible because you get rid of a bunch of r-words and an f-word. we’ve all seen the fucking content warnings people make for new readers, this comic is fucked.

what is a new reader gonna think when they go through the comic thinking nothing worse than some slurs will pop up and then this guy makes a grand fucking entrance.

"Johnny!" She gasped, with a warning. Her hips squirmed, trying to find an escape from the onslaught of her-his- their fingers.

"No you don't." Johnny hissed, pulling his-their hand away. He slammed her hips backward in cyberspace - stilling her movements in meatspace.

"Dick, I'm close!" She spat - completely ignoring how they ended up in this predicament in the first place.

"You'll cum when I tell you to....cunt." Johnny chuckled.  Their hand was drenched and Johnny lifted it up, sniffing it like a Corpo sniffs a fine cheese before he licked it up.

V could taste herself a few seconds after.

"Damn," Johnny hummed appreciatively. "That's a good tasting pussy."

V flushed.

In cyberspace, she mewled and gripped The Hand that was still gripping her throat. Johnny's raised her up along the wall of code, her legs dangling below. It diverted her attention elsewhere as she tried to keep herself from dangling by using her tiptoes.

Johnny watched, amused. "You know, you could stand to be more fun, V."

"I'm loads of fun." She seethed out, angrily.  The bite however was softened as he twisted their fingers. Her voice stuttered into a moan.

"Really?" He drawled low and dangerous, fingers thrusting into her.

She squirmed, legs limp as her abdomen tightened. "Yesssss."

"Hmm...prove it." Johnny stilled their fingers' movements.

"Wha?" V blinked, staring into his unshaded gaze in cyberspace.

"Fuck yourself on our hand." Johnny challenged. "With our fingers."

V growled.

"Come on V." Johnny whispered closer to her. "I know you've been itching for a good lay. You think I couldn't feel it? Didn't know how long its been since you last had a BD? Since you last opened up the cabinet under your wardrobe? Remember V, I've got access to your memories. I know all about why you've got a syb-" Johnny swore as his head flung back when V headbutted him. The attack surprised him enough to let her go. But instead of running, she was on him.

V tackled him until he went sprawling across the floor in cyberspace, his hands pinned to either side of him as she glowered at him.

"Stay the fuck out of my shit, Silverhand." She spat. "In fact, stay the fuck out of my head!"

"V, V, V, you know I can't. I'm here to stay." Johnny sneered at her. He could tell she was infuriated that he was right.

"Then at least do the courtesy of not fucking with me when I'm working." She hissed.

"Fine." Johnny agreed.

By the confusion and droop of her shoulders, she hadn't expected that. "Oh..."

"But do one thing for me."

She groaned. "What?"

"Get off."

"Wha... Oh." V shifted to get off of him, letting his arms go, but that wasn't what he meant.

"No, V." He grabbed her hips and yanked her down against him, grinding for effect so she'd feel the phantom pressure on her body. "Get off."

Johnny gets the body, leaves night city, V is doing shit in cyberspace until they need to go to meatspace to stop ... idk something ... and so they hijack a doll for a bit, team back up with Johnny, and then they have that choice again... They could stay, keep the original personality "sleeping"... What would your V do in this situation? How would you feel Johnny would react about it?

Honestly, the original ending I wrote for my fic is something along these lines but it felt really, like, Too Happy? I’m trying to rework it. In the original one, V accepts it, if only because she’s hopeful to a fault and is willing to try anything. Johnny does it because he is incapable of saying no to her, especially at the end. he made a promise to save her life and he is not a liar, despite being a million other negative things. v is the only person he can save, after a life spent throwing himself into ridiculous dangerous situations to baptize the world in fire. he is gonna do literally anything he can to help her. i get the like whole “he can’t commit he is a man slut” thing, but also when it comes to commitment to things and ideas he holds to be 100% true and right, he commits to the end. he’s not a quitter, and V is just hopeful enough to get them both to the finish line.

I love most of the names I have! And since I picked them out myself I really should haha... I've been called Anton for more than ten years now (and dimtraces too actually!) I also love the name Len which is what since last year most people in meatspace call me, and as to my legal name... it's still genuinely so much better than gendered honorifics for me, plus in terms of literal meaning it's essentially "super beloved sunshine wow" (i'd have bad associations with it probably if people i care about didn't respect my chosen names but so...)

Chapter 202: Broken Pieces Shine

The baby edgerunner and her corpo dog are insufferable, and Johnny is suffering.

Johnny isn’t sure what he expected, or why he’s even mad. His plus one and Saburo’s pet killer are always like that — the only thing that keeps them from becoming fully unbearable is that they’re still trying to pretend they’re not an item. He’s got no idea why they even bother, only way to be more obvious is matching rings.

The corpo dog has loaded the van like it’s a family camping trip: in addition to the sleeping gear, he’s packed change for his output and some of her favourite kibble. The only redeeming feature is the armory on the walls, and Johnny’s just glad that they don’t have kids. Yet. At least he’ll be out of there before he’s gotta put up with that.

Vee used to fantasize about this - her and the samurai, in a shower. Reality deviates from this, lots. Which... is okay, really. Better than.

By the time the samurai enters she’s still standing in front of the sink with his shirt on, prodding at the mess inside of her and trying to ignore the headache. Looking like shit — death warmed over. But that’s the neon light, probably. Must be.

Or maybe it’s not, because he throws a single glance at her and his eyes change shape.

“Should I leave you?” he asks quietly, voice hoarse. Relief is palpable on his face when she shakes her head and steps towards him; he enfolds her like she’s both precious and fragile. Goro doesn’t ask what’s wrong, his silent presence providing full cover and then some.

“Am sorry, samurai,” she mutters. “Not where this shoulda been going…”

In contrast to last year, this year we’ve collectively been nervously watching what that fucking horse is going to do next, hoping that that horse-catcher is about to tie to noose around both the horse and whichever twat let it in in the hospital in the first place.

So it was with music. Mainstream acts were left in the lurch allowing newcomers to come in and make a name for themselves, reflected in who got featured in last year’s list. This year however big name bands have reminded us that they can show the newbies a thing or two about how hold a tune

Given just how good 2018 has been for music, I left this year’s Follow Forever as late as I could just to jam everything in. THE ALPHA BITCH OF DOGTOWN!!!!

The Alpha Bitch of Dogtown is an AU following Vega (my go-to FemV) after she becomes the leader of BARGHEST. Given that it's Vega, it technically is a branch of the Chorus AU.

Full detail below the cut:

Vega reaches these lofty heights by betraying the FIA and helping Hansen secure his power in Dogtown. She proves her loyalty to the cause by killing Alex and Reed.

In return, Vega gets the Neural Matrix from Hansen, but because BARGHEST don't know how it works, V decides to get Alt to help her with it, so Hansen, Bennett and V, as well as a team of Hansen's most elite soldiers, strike Arasaka tower to get an ailing V to Mikoshi. Hansen is killed by Adam Smasher.

His dying command to Bennett is that V will become his successor. In his words, 'She has the drive.' Alt separates Johnny (who is fucking pissed that V would side with Hansen, even if it is against the NUSA) from V and reluctantly assists V in activating the neural matrix, but tells her that she will need to undergo a long medical procedure in meatspace to be cured.

BARGHEST fakes V's death and Bennett takes her to Hansen's favourite Black Clinic in Novosibirsk, USSR. Bennett proves smarter than he looks, and more deceitful, boldly lying to all of V's friends, as well as Judy, that V's dead, resulting in Bennett taking a frying pan to the face (it's a canon event, this happens to Panam and Mitch in Chorus as well).

After two years in a therapeutic coma, she wakes up and is ready to go to work. She has new plans for Dogtown, ones that won't be popular with the many thugs and bullies that populate BARGHEST. V wants to make Dogtown a liveable place. She wants to make it a paradise, not just for the rich and famous who come to visit the Black Sapphire.

A new vision for Dogtown. If people don't like it, they can leave, either by their own volition, or in a bodybag. She is aided in this task by Dorian Bautista, a former Militech agent who shares V's vision for Dogtown and Night City. He commands an elite platoon of handpicked bodyguards, known as Bandog Platoon, who assist V in achieving her goal of a peaceful Dogtown by clearing it of Scavs, FIA agents and BARGHEST traitors who oppose V's changes to their regime.

It is not going to be sunshine and rainbows, and if there is going to be a happy ending, it's going to be dampened by the bitterness of loss and defeat. But Dogtown isn't Night City, Vega's determined to make it so that in Dogtown, there can be happy endings... for everyone.

V and Johnny in real space AU, and she’s going to get them both dinner from a noodle shop nearby and bring it back to the apartment. Johnny can’t rly go out to much 1. Still recovering from being on ice for 50+ years 2. Can’t make too much of a scene with his presence. And the shop is taking awhile with the order so V is there for a bit and Johnny has to text her and he’s just so bad with texting and he knows it too. Like he’ll send one message saying “where the fuck are you” (Real cool of you, Johnny) Which comes rude as fuck but it’s just HOW HE IS.

He just types something like “bitch” and nothing else.  Then follows it up with a  “miss you”
