Hello I hope you are doing well, I found a new drama titled "The Legacy" (2022) 传家 , that I would love to hear your thoughts on. The reason is that what caught my eye is that this drama ( atleast in some of the promo pictures) the qipao/cheongsam seem to have the neck binding that I read sometime frustrates you ioth other movies and shows' costumes
I had a look at some photos of that drama and they have some really spectacular and well made costumes that have never been attempted elsewhere. There were some weird choices here and there but overall the costuming is very thoughtful and refreshing. The story starts in the late 20s and ends in the early 40s, and the show did attempt to show the passage of time with the costumes while respecting the fashion of the actual years it was from. I especially approve of the costumes from the 20s/30s transition, they did not shy away from recreating the flapper look at all!
Tumblr media
This costume (hybrid cheongsam-Western dress) is amazing in that it replicated the ruffled sleeves we see on some dresses of the 20s/30s transition. The scalloped edges are also a nice period detail. And yes like you said they did the binding all the way around the neck which is accurate.
Tumblr media
Late 20s/early 30s dress with ruffled sleeves.
Tumblr media
These are two very good examples of late 20s cheongsam. The flat chested silhouette, the slightly flared sleeves, the fake two-piece effect with the long vest etc., all true to the era. The hair here is alright.
Tumblr media
Late 20s photograph.
Tumblr media
In this photo you can see some of their shoes. The women’s footwear is immaculate and absolutely period accurate, on top of being beautiful and flattering. They have that 20s pointed toe and overall mary jane shape, as well as decorations. I think the costumers might have tried to indicate age and different personalities within a historically accurate framework, which shows incredible skill; traditionally, costumers relied on time travelling to indicate whether someone was more conservative or modern etc.. Here the older woman wears a longer cheongsam in a darker color with embroidery, the younger ones wear shorter ones with abstract modernist patterns and avant-garde construction.
The first cheongsam from the left is remarkable: it’s short (knee length), has a zigzag hem with embroidered/beaded borders, a tube collar and a floral corsage, all very fashionable elements of the time.
Tumblr media
Late 20s/early 30s cheongsam with zigzag motif.
Tumblr media
This one is also well made and has good fabric and trim choices.
Tumblr media
This is a very well constructed early 30s cheongsam, the linear, abstract fabric and three rows of thin binding are great period choices as well. The symmetrical dajin is well executed! The collar is appropriately tall.
Tumblr media
Mei Lin in a 30s cheongsam with a similar collar, tall and with three rows of binding.
Tumblr media
The fabric choice in this one!! Spectacular!! Amazing!! Revolutionary!! I’ve always wanted to see bold geometric patterns on cheongsam the same way they were popular in the 30s, and this is serving it. They also did the binding (thin and two rows, very good) around the fictitious armhole, an actual period design mimicking the long vest trend of earlier years. The attention to detail and variety in options is legendary.
Tumblr media
Anna May Wong in a cheongsam with armhole binding (even the pose here is similar, great for showing my point ahaha).
Tumblr media
The wedding look is pretty nice, actually looks like something someone would wear to a wedding in the Republican era.
Tumblr media
The bolero with puffed sleeves! That was a thing in the 30s and 40s.
Tumblr media
Late 30s/early 40s poster, showing woman in cheongsam and puff sleeve bolero.
Tumblr media
Very interesting fabric choice here, presumably for an early 40s cheongsam? The low collar is great, and they actually aren’t afraid of getting rid of trimmings and binding altogether as was the case in the 40s. The hair here is actually fully waved and great but would be more appropriate for the early 30s.
Tumblr media
Another nice early 40s cheongsam with good fabric choice.
Tumblr media
Zhou Xuan in a low collar 40s cheongsam.
Tumblr media
Though I would say some of the makeup and hairstyling in this drama leaves much to be desired, whoever made the clothes have a much more advanced grasp on fashion history than the hair and makeup stylists. They used a lot of these tack on fingerwave extensions, which is industry standard guzhuang practice. Many characters also have loose, straight hair on many occasions, not in a "they were students and didn't bother to curl their hair" historically accurate way but in a "this appeals to modern audiences" kind of way. The makeup is also completely modern.
I feel like the menswear and generally “Western” costumes in this are a hit or miss. The menswear looks overall too tight, and the Western clothes don’t really look like anything popular in Western fashion at the time.
I think the costumes in this drama are strongest in their tailoring and choice of fabrics.

Hi! i saw your thread on twitter about Chinese culture concerning danmei in spain. You mentioned that Chinese names often follow some sort of theme and usually have 1 or two characters per name, so I wanted to ask you if there was anything else to naming customs in China?
I’m trying to create a name for a character I have and I want it to be authentic as possible :,)) sorry if this is too much to ask!! <3
Hello! Hope you're having a lovely day!
There can be a lot of art in something as simple as a name in Chinese-- my knowledge is not exhaustive but I'm happy to talk about and share as much as I can!
Chinese names usually go by a 1 or 2 word surname, followed by a 1 or 2 word first name. Depending on the region, some minority groups may have names longer than that too (e.g. 迪丽热巴 迪力木拉提 Dilraba Dilmurat, 库都斯江·艾尼娃尔 Kudusjan Anivar) but we won’t talk about that.
Surnames:
Usually 1 or 2 characters long
The Top 20 most common single word Chinese surnames in mainland China (in order):
Wang, Li, Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Sun, Zhao, Wu, Zhou, Xu, Ma, Zhu, Hu, Guo, He, Gao, Luo, Lin
The Top 7 most common multiple word Chinese surnames in mainland China (in order):
Ouyang, Shangguan, Huangfu, Linghu, Zhuge, Situ, Sima
Each surname has history behind it.
E.g. 王 Wang was actually the title used to refer to members of the royal family in ancient Chinese history. This includes calling the King "王" during the 3 kingdoms era, or calling a lord/prince "王爷" during the Qing dynasty for example. Therefore, the surname 王 was historically reserved for those in power and families of high social status.
E.g. two-word names potentially came from court titles
Naming customs include:
siblings having similar/matching names-- names of siblings or close relatives can be put together to achieve a deeper level of meaning. Sometimes even the names of family members through generations could be matching or similar, like with only 1 character difference
naming based on family symbols/motifs-- this refers to names associated with the town or birthplace, etc.
naming with particular meaning-- this is often derived from literature or poetry, the latter being a huge inspiration for names. Names can also describe the person's personality
Gendered names:
They do exist in Chinese. Certain characters with associated meanings may have gender connotations associated with them
It's all very stereotypical, but most commonly names with "feminine" words such as 美 (mei = beauty), 花 (hua = flower), 婷 (ting = gracefulness) are used for females, while "masculine" words like 力 (li = strength), 俊 (jun = handsome), 宏 (hong = grand) are used for males
Non-gendered/unisex names exist too. Words such as 明 (ming = bright),雨 (yu = rain),云 (yun = cloud),南 (nan = South),嘉 (jia = good, delightful) can sound unisex
Aside from this, also keep in mind:
The sound of the name plays a very significant role. A good name needs to flow when said aloud and have a nice ring to it.
A lot of names might sound "old fashioned" or "outdated"
Many Chinese words have the same pronunciation but different meanings, so it's important to make sure the name doesn't accidentally end up sounding like something it's not supposed to sound like e.g. 梅潜 (mei qian = pronounced the same as 没钱 which means no money)
I am currently writing a document detailing more cultural aspects including naming conventions, place names, customs and traditions, brief folklore and genres of Chinese fiction-- I go into a bit more detail in there. I'm gauging interest at the moment-- let me know if this would be of interest to you and I will endeavour to complete it sometime!!!
I hope this was helpful! Please feel free to ask me any more questions!

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
This post is for the polls which have finished running and can no longer be voted in (since I have realised that I'm quickly approaching the limit for hyperlinks in the original masterlist).
If you want to see the currently live polls, they can be found here

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Eleven
Events:
Xie Yu uses the Minister of Rites to get Yue-pin reinstated so she can play a part in the Year-End ceremony as the CP's mother.
Prince Yu says the Year-End ceremony has been done wrong and the CP should be paying respects to the Empress as his mother. He suggests a formal court debate and the Emperor agrees.
The CP buys lots of scholars to argue his side in the debate.
MCS sends Mu Qing to get a particularly important scholar, using a cicada token.
Nihuang checks MCS's handwriting against Lin Shu's letters to her.
Jingyan tells his mother he wants the throne.
Lin Shu fails to wait patiently for news.
Names and titles
Prince Yu and his wife call each other 'wangfei' and 'dianxia', which is very formal. On the other hand, he says "oh, it's you" to her.
The Emperor refers to Nihuang just as 'Nihuang' when talking with his ministers.
The important scholar is called Zhou-lao-xiansheng or just lao-xiansheng.
Zhou-lao-xiansheng refers to former Imperial Tutor Li Chong as Li-xiong.
Prince Yu refers to Su-xiansheng when talking to the Empress, not Mei Changsu.
Jingyan calls his mother muqin at least in private.
Characters
Prince Yu believes Prince Ji is an honest man, and wants to avoid offending him.
Banruo flinches whenever Prince Yu touches her.
Banruo tells Prince Yu it's an honour to serve him and she admires him so much. Prince Yu believes her.
Prince Yu and his wife seem to have a fairly good relationship? He trusts her with household matters. She gets on well with the Empress and was probably her choice.
Xie Yu gets in a little dig about 'scholarly' families when talking to M of Rites.
M of Rites has a son who has been taking bribes. M of Rites doesn't come off as very bright. He's a second-generation minister.
Xie Yu still has an actual army job he does in between plotting.
Xie Yu brings up the Chiyan case when discussing Nihuang's loyalties, which is clearly the nuclear option. Everyone in the room flinches.
There is no way MCS didn't see the Year End problem coming as soon as Yue got demoted.
The Emperor tells off the CP for forgetting the dignity of his position. This scene is a good example of the way he can turn on a dime to berate you.
Nihuang has sent unspecified gifts to MCS.
Prince Yu has good connections with scholars but can't compete with the CP's money and luxurious palace.
Zhou-lao-xiansheng can get away with treating the Prince of Yunnan rudely, fobbing him off with a child messenger.
Time
It's still a month til New Year. Time is acting strangely these last 2 episodes.
The plum blossom is out, which can be as early as mid-winter.
Places
There's good plum blossom at Mu Manor.
Zhou-lao-xiansheng lives at Lingyi Temple, which seems to be a few days out of the city.

MEET THE ZHANG FAMILY
The Zhang family's journey begins in the hills of China where generations of gifted herbalists passed their knowledge and craft down through their family tree. Amid the influx of others migrating to California, the Zhang family saw an opportunity to spread their practice across the waters.
Setting foot amidst the clamor of San Francisco's bustling streets, the Zhangs established their apothecary, swiftly earning renown for their potent remedies and conmpassionate care. As the height of the gold rush came to a close, the family became aware of whispers about others moving north. They made the executive decision to follow suit and settle in what we now know as Fairford.
By the early 1920s the Zhang family had expanded their craft and opened Fairford's first pharmacy, Better Soon, which is still family owned to this day.
SUGGESTED FCS FOR THE ZHANG FAMILY:
Gemma Chan, Jessie Mei Li, Han Dongjun, Lin Yun, Jackson Wang, Andy Lau, Amanda Zhou, Luo Yunxi, Zhou Dongyu, Ramona Young.

In the bustling city of Beijing; May 21 1998, Ann Chi Zhang who also known as Miura Annelie Zhang came into the world as the second daughter of Li Wei Zhang and Mei Ling Zhang (neé Zhou). Her father is an architect and her mother is a doctor. She shared a special bond with her older brother, Guan Lin Zhang, who soared through the skies as a pilot.
From the moment she could hold a pencil, Miura knew she wanted to be a writer. She spent hours in her cozy attic room, scribbling stories about princesses, dragons, and faraway lands. Every weekend, Miura would gather her family around the fireplace and read her latest creations aloud. Her parents and brother, although busy with their own work, always made time to listen, their eyes sparkling with pride as Miura spun her tales.
As Miura grew older, she pursued her dream by studying film and screenwriting at Beijing Film Academy. After graduating, she dove headfirst into the entertainment industry, working as a scriptwriter for a major production company.

💛 femfeb day 26 | my femfeb masterpost 🧡 xposted → ao3 | dw | pf.io 💖 Brigitte/Mei | 700 words | General Audiences 🧡 Alternate Universe, Children’s TV, Cute, Short & Sweet, Vignette 💛 Children's TV Show host, The Marvelous Mei, gets recognized while out for a drink.
“Excuse me, sorry to interrupt-“ Both Mei and Brigitte glanced away from each other to look at the woman who had come to stand at the end of their booth. She was drinking beer out of a bottle and had a curious smile on her face. “Are you The Marvelous Mei?” Mei instantly found herself smiling too, surprised and delighted to be recognized by a fan. Or, well, the parent of a fan. The target audience for her show was distinctly under the age of 10. She did have a weird subset of adult fans that had almost all unilaterally gotten themselves banned from the official Marvelous Mei Instagram for inappropriate comments, but this woman didn’t look like one of those. “Yes,” Mei smiled sweetly, “That’s me!” “My daughter loves you!” A parent, of course. Mei pressed a hand to her heart, charmed. It just felt so nice to see the real people who watched and enjoyed her program. The actual parents of the world who cared about science enough to let their little ones watch The Marvelous Mei before school. The bumper that aired between commercials was true. The show really was only made possible by contributions from viewers like this woman. Without them Mei (and Brigitte) would be out of jobs. Then what would she be doing? Probably back to stuffy old university research, sitting behind a lab desk every day, nodding off in front of her screen. Being The Marvelous Mei was so much more fun. She got to act. She got to play with puppet and marionette friends in front of a camera. She got to craft experiments for kids to replicate at home. She got to teach the impressionable minds of the world about vitally important things like conservation, environmental research, and alternative energy solutions. She did all this in a way that young viewers could understand and consume. She was so proud of that. Plus, without this job, she wouldn’t have ever met Brigitte. Mei glanced over at her, not surprised to see a slightly smug smile on her face. She thought it was funny that Mei had fans who stopped her on the street and asked for selfies. Interactions like these always made her smirk and shake her head reverently. Brigitte was the show’s trusty carpenter. Without her, they would have no sets, no props, no marionettes, nothing. No elaborate pirate ship background or submarine set for Mei to navigate CGI seas in. No Biosphere Blade, the sword she used to battle the nefarious Greenhouse Gas Gang. No Eamon the Eagle string-puppet to teach the kids about endangered species. Mei was notorious for being found in the carpenter’s workshop, always there watching Brigitte work before filming and during breaks. She couldn’t help herself. She liked the smell of sawdust, fresh and delightfully woody. She liked the conversations they had, playful and flirty and full of giggling laughter. She liked seeing Brigitte’s muscles in her cut off sleeves. Even though her crush was painfully obvious to everyone else, Mei felt like the last to know. The production assistant who had to drag Mei from the workshop back to set minutes before filming began knew all about it. The make-up artist who had to rush in and powder away any redness when Brigitte came on set to watch the filming and Mei started blushing knew about it too. Even Brigitte seemed perfectly aware, only lifting her eyebrows and saying ‘about time’ when Mei finally worked up the courage to ask her out. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your guys’ evening,” The woman said, backing up a step. “I just had to say something. Your show really is great.” “Thank you, you’re so sweet.” Mei said softly, wriggling her fingers in a goodbye as the woman offered a final nod and stepped away. When Mei looked over, Brigitte still had that smirk on her face. She raised her beer mug to her mouth and sipped, smiling over the rim. “What?” Mei asked. “Nothing,” Brigitte set her drink down. “You’re just cute is all.” Mei looked down at her own lap to hide her big, bright smile. Brigitte always did this to her, made her feel like she had butterflies fluttering around in her stomach. She would probably never get used to her crush liking her back, and if she was being honest, she didn’t want to.   Being The Marvelous Mei wasn’t all about hosting a children’s show and teaching science. Apparently being The Marvelous Mei meant having a Marvelous girlfriend to go out and have drinks with, to call her cute, to go home with her at the end of the night. For that, Mei couldn’t be any more grateful.
