Merlin learned a lot of things from Gaius... magic, healing, the way the Kingdom works... but truly the thing he learned the most from him is how to be sassy as all hell

You know what I wish we'd seen?

More positive actively involved magic users.

Like, we know the Druids support Emrys, though they seem more like a pacifist, non-combatant party (aside from some outliers like Kara, Mordred, Alvarr), and other magic users/beings like Anhora, Grettir, Mab, they all seem to be neutral. They acknowledge Emrys as a superior power, but they don't seem to actively participate for better or worse. And all other sorcerers are usually antagonistic. But why can't we have the other side? I'm sure there has to be some who decide to take Merlin's side. Maybe they don't entirely trust Arthur, maybe they aren't too certain of a Pendragon, but dude, it's fucking Emrys. If Emrys is supporting him, there's gotta be something to him, right?

Let Merlin have people helping him, other sorcerers who slip him spells that are too powerful for them, maybe he can do something with it, passing him information about plots they've heard through the sorcerers' grapevine, even helping him thwart some of the ambushes and traps. Maybe they aren't brave enough to live in Camelot 24/7 like Merlin, but they take turns bringing him messages and supplies, and to get their "marching orders," such as they are.

Also, imagine the look on Arthur's face when he finds out he has a magic Praetorian Guard that answers to his manservant.

yeah see, that's one of the big issues that's always bothered me. like we (the audience) are told that magic is not evil but rather is something as integral as nature. but more often than not, a lot of the antagonist we meet are magic users and most of the time they are power hungry people. i mean, i totally understand the sorcerers who seek out revenge for Uther and by proxy Camelot, but we only either get these types of sorcerers or the sorcerers whom the show portrays as only evil.

it is, frankly, impossible for the magic community to be full of only evil and vengeful sorcerers. there's got to be more diversity than that, bbc 🙄 you're telling me that there are no somewhat powerful magic users living in Albion helping others anyway they can and don't seek to help aid Merlin in anyway. and i mean aid him since s1. by s5 it looked like he was actually getting some help, but they were still sorcerers who fell a little bit in the gray area or just never interacted with anyone other than Merlin.

maybe have Lancelot befriend another sorcerer while he was away from Camelot and sort of sneak him in to help save the kingdom from Morgana and Morgause in s3. maybe Elyan, who had left Camelot pre-s1, have some magic friends that we meet in s4.

tbh, my big issue is that with how much the show tells us, the audience, that magic does have positive impacts and isn't evil, none of the characters besides Gaius, Merlin, and Lancelot actually know that (as far as i'm aware). literally any time Arthur considers that maybe magic isn't what his father claimed it to be, he ends up going back to those prejudices and ideas Uther propagated because "magic killed my father," "magic killed my mother" (still super salty), "magic corrupted morgana," "magic wants me dead." when in reality, that's far from the truth, and Merlin then has to continue to hide a part of himself from people he cares for and loves dearly because all they've ever known and seen is "evil magic people."

just....bbc, explain to me how Arthur was supposed to bring the so-called "Golden Age" to Albion where there's peace between magic users and non-magic users alike if he, himself, believed magic was inherently evil???? how is Arthur the Once and Future King if he never repealed the ban on magic or began working with sorcerers? and i'm saying this as someone who loves the character, but why did we, the audience, not get a chance to really see Arthur break away from his father's prejudices on magic until the series finale?

it just bugs me. there are so many moments where it looks like maybe Merlin has an ally that's pro-magic and pro-unity and wants to help fulfill the prophecy, but then they either become one-time side characters or fucking die. never seen or heard from again. maybe i just want a character or two to stick and maybe give Merlin the support group he needs?

I think that at the moment I could come up with a merthur fic idea for just about any song. Every song I listen to at the moment becomes merthur coded to me.

Anyway though, I say this because I've got 2 songs currently stuck in my head as fics. The first is called Empress by Morningsiders.

For this song I imagine a modern day, maybe university au. Where Merlin and Arthur have been friends forever growing up and they room together at university, sharing an apartment. They go out on the weekends together, with regular friend dates at coffeeshops or movie theaters. They even go shopping for home decor much to Arthur's dismay. Throughout Arthur dates Gwen for a while, it started in high school, but eventually they meet Lancelot. Arthur and Gwen try so hard to make it work between them but they both know something is off, they just can't understand what.

When Arthur sees Gwen talking to Lancelot he realizes that he didn't really know what love was meant to look like. He loves Gwen, no question, but it's not that all consuming romantic soul bearing love that it should be. And its not the easy effortless love that it should be either. It's more of a love between friends. And he sees that, if he just let go, Gwen could find that with someone else, possibly Lancelot.

As Arthur comes to terms with the fact that he doesn't know how to love Gwen the way she deserves, Merlin pines over Arthur and slowly starts to pull away from him. It comes to a point, while Arthur and Gwen are still together, that Merlin realizes he's just hurting himself staying roommates with Arthur. He decides that he is going to move out. While Arthur is out on a date, Merlin packs a bag and goes to Gwaine's place to crash on his couch.

Arthur is out late on his date with Gwen. He had been nervous before the date like he hadn't been in ages. They go to dinner and chat as old friends would and it solidifies to Arthur that whatever passion they had, if they had any, is now gone. There is no animosity between them which makes it that much harder to tell Gwen why they should break up. Gwen, much to his surprise seems to understand. She looks at him sympathetically and wonders aloud why it took them this long, the signs had been there for at least a year. Arthur agrees, nodding along, until Gwen says something that stops him in his tracks.

"Have you told Merlin yet?"

Arthur puzzles and responds, "Er, no, why would I. This is our business not his, of course I'll tell him later that we've separated but no not yet."

"Oh." Gwen seems genuinely confused, "I didn't mean about breaking this off. I meant have you told Merlin about your feelings yet?"

Arthur continues to not understand and says so in as many words. Gwen sighs and mutters something about men and their emotional intelligence. Then she takes Arthur's hand and explains how she knew this was coming soon. That she had realized and tried to ignore for quite sometime that what Merlin and Arthur had was more of a relationship than the two of them had ever had. As she lays out all her observations, Arthur realizes she is right. That's what was missing, it was Merlin.

He stands up quickly from the table and drops a few bills to pay before saying goodbye as he runs out the door. When he makes it back home he hesitates, half hoping Merlin will just be asleep so that he doesn't have to admit his feelings just yet. But also wanting to see him, and hug him, kiss him even as he professes his newly realized feelings.

When he works up the courage to go inside, the place is silent. All lights are off and there isn't a single sound. Arthur calls out and there is no response so he knocks on Merlin's door. Opening it slightly he sees a neat, tidy, and more importantly empty bed.

Maybe Merlin is just out with some of their friends, Arthur rationalizes, he'll be back soon. So Arthur sits up for a couple hours waiting, but he grows restless. He'd already texted Merlin asking where he was at but didn't get a response, so now he tries texting both Gwaine and Lancelot.

To his surprise, Gwaine calls him immediately.

"Gwaine! Have you seen Merlin, he's not home and isn't responding to my texts and I'm a bit worried."

"What did you do this time princess?" Gwaine responds.

"Nothing! I swear, I was out on a date with Gwen is all and came back and Merlin's not here!"

"Ah."

"What? What does that mean, Gwaine, please tell me if you know where he is."

"He's at my place, crashing on the couch," Arthur hears an affronted yell in the background from Merlin, trying to get the phone away from Gwaine, Gwaine obviously gets the upper hand as he gets back on the line, "he wouldn't tell me what was going on so I just assumed you'd had some sort of tiff. But I see now why Merlin was sulking."

Arthur didn't really know what to make of whatever Gwaine seemed to be implying so he just said, "I'll be there soon." And hung up.

Arthur rushes over to Gwaine's and the man let him in. Merlin looks affronted at Arthur and complains that Arthur just has to go around rubbing it in, Arthur looks on confused. They wind up in a heated argument before Arthur finally breaks and admits, "I broke up with Gwen."

"What! You idiot, why would you!?"

"Because Merlin, I finally admitted to myself that we were holding each other back, and what's more she helped me realize how much of a complete and utter fool I've been."

"I'm not following you Arthur?"

"I-I, she helped me realize, that I'm in love with someone else, have been for a long time."

Merlin begins to shut down, angry at Arthur for telling him this, but then Arthur stops him and says, "she helped me realize what I've taken for granted, every coffee date and movie night, and cooking together in the kitchen. That love I've been trying to create had been right in front of me and I was a fool for, for loving her over... you."

I think they had such a facinating dynamic and I would have loved to see the writers follow through with it, especially in the later series. Doomed from the start and intrinsically linked, everyone telling him it's a bad idea for different reasons, everyone telling her she couldn't possibly be with him........ yeah, that's the good shit

Favourite canon pairing: Arthur and Gwen were SO cute and I'm happy for them (and their third, Merlin)

Worst pairing ever: Gwen/Lancelot, specifically when he got back because obviously. He wasn't him, she was spelled, and worst of all, there was never any resolution. Still haunted by the fact that everyone expect Merlin (including Gwen herself) really thinks she just. Cheated on Arthur. Heartbreaking

Guilty pleasure pairing: Morgana and Gwen <3 They're so cute and also the HEARTBREAK,,, when Morgana comes back and Gwen pretends to still be her friend and,,,,,,,,, THEM. The guilty part comes from the fact that I know a lot of this ship comes form the "get the women out of the way for mlm ship" mentality, but that's obviously not why I like it soooooo

A pairing you want to see more: Honestly both Morgana/Gwen and Merlin/Morgana. I know everyone loves Arthur/Merlin and they ARE fuckin valid and cute, but I really feel more people should multi-ship because Merlin has SUCH good dynamics with other people, and despite people *saying* they ship Morgana/Gwen there is a suspicious lack of content for them

I'm still thinking about the symbolism of the questing beast in the context of Armor. What if meeting It and healing would not have saved Arthur from loving Morgana, but on the contrary, would have pushed everything forward, sealing the destiny and thereby wounding him not physically, but spiritually — in the future when the truth about their true father would have surfaced and Morgana would have gone over to the dark side? A canon divergent drabble below :]

Arthur still couldn't get out of bed, but the deathly pallor had left his noble face and he breathed steadily. There was hope that the beast's wound had not destroyed him.

Morgana entered his sunlit chambers quickly, releasing Merlin from his duties.

"Arthur..." Whispered she, stopping at his bed and glancing at him.

She had spent the whole day in bed, suffering from a headache caused by a prophetic nightmare and fear for Arthur's life. But as soon as Gaius informed her that Arthur was feeling better, she got up and ran to his chambers, wearing only her ghostly white nightgown — she just didn't care.

Sitting next to the head of Arthur's bed, Morgana placed her hand on his hot forehead. If only she had real magic, not just nightmares, she would have healed Arthur. She would have done everything for him.

Morgana weakly smiled, looking at him.

"Or, Arthur," she thought, "If only you listened to me once...If only you weren't insufferable, arrogant, foolishly brave... and absolutely beautiful and loved."

She moistened the fabric in an herbal infusion and wiped his face, reducing the fever of his skin.

"I couldn't bear it if you died, Arthur..." she said softly, caressing his face, "I can't live without you. Don't you dare die. We need you. I need you."

Her voice became a barely audible whisper, and her eyes filled with tears. This time he survived, but what the future will bring?

When Morgana left, she did not notice that Arthur's eyelashes trembled and a light smile touched his pale lips.

The next day he was healthy and cheerful as if nothing had happened, talking to his father who was pleased that the monster had been defeated, joking with Morgana and Merlin and just being himself. With Arthur's return to the castle came light and hope.

Morgana said goodbye to King Uther in the evening and wanted to go to her chambers, but Arthur suddenly stopped her, touching the silk sleeve of her lilac dress.

"Morgana, wait."

"Yes, Arthur?" she turned around.

Arthur looked at her, smiling gently.

"What?" she skeptically raised an eyebrow, folding her arms across her chest.

"When I was sick and lying in bed..." he began, "I...I heard everything."

Morgana felt, to her shame, that her face and neck were flushed painfully. How could he hear her?

"I don't understand what you're talking about," she snapped. 

"Really? It seemed to me that someone came to my room, treated my wounds, and then said they needed me. Do you know who it could have been?" he winked at her.

"I have no idea. You were unconscious and imagined it all." Morgana shook her head embarrassedly, not knowing why she continued to deny the truth.

Her heart was beating like crazy when she cautiously glanced at Arthur, who looked touched and flattered at the same time.

He took a step forward towards her.

"It's a pity you don't know her," he looked almost sad, speaking slowly, "It was a beautiful, kindhearted woman. I wanted to tell her that I need her too. Always. And that she was right."

"Better later than never, yes, Arthur?" Morgana sneered.

Arthur hugged her waist, and Morgana felt her hands slide up and rest on his shoulders. Being close to him felt so right and easy.

"I'll tell her if I see her." She replied, barely holding back laughter, "She must be glad you're back."

Merlin, who had entered the dining room to clear the table, abruptly stopped, hiding behind a column.

Arthur and Morgana were embracing each other and kissing. They were so wrapped up in each other that didn't notice him at all.

Merlin always guessed that the prince and princess of Camelot were only pretending to hate each other when they secretly burned for each other. However, the beast changed everything, finally bringing them closer together. As if having been on the brink of life and death and almost losing each other, Arthur and Morgana finally realized the truth.

But still he shuddered, remembering how he heard that strange otherworldly voice in his mind: "This is just the beginning." And looking at Arthur and Morgana together, the young warlock couldn't shake off the ominous premonition he felt upon seeing this loving royal couple.

Something was coming.

the first was while /after the lamia episode /accident. I just remember that  Arthur was arriving in the castle and the lamia is attacking but the little light orb that saved Arthur before (as merlin drank poison and Arthur wanted to get the flower) arrives and goes into the sword so Arthur could kill it, then the orb shows the way to the other knights and at least to merlin who is hurt. (was a bit angsty)

The second is Arthur gets enhanced to "freal behavior" his behavior is controlled by his primari emotions, so then he is angry he is really really "freal". It happens just after Arthur found out about merlins magic and so his freal behavior is directed on Merlin and the knights want to protect merlin and keep them apart but it just got worse. Arthur is yelling for merlin for example. In the end Merlin goes to Arthur and rather than killing merlin like the knights feared, Arthur cuddles Merlin.

Why Sherlock Holmes FGO is Sus: Theories and More

Before I begin, I’d like to give thanks to my wonderful friend for all the points, art, and info searching that have been made to produce this piece, I can’t appreciate you enough for the effort you put in. 🥺🙏💕

INTRODUCTION: Humble Beginnings (Identification of the Abnormal)

If you’ve played the app Fate/Grand Order for a while you’d know about the Heroic Spirit we first encounter in a hole within Camelot’s dessert whilst going to the Atlas Institute. Smart, handsome looking, and sharp enough to discern our True Name, this man of mystery has been seen as an oddball by many long time players of the game. There are many aspects about him that raise doubt about his credibility, is he truly what he wants us to think he is? That servant is Sherlock Holmes (Ruler) and there are many theories about him having some secrets, about him either being a Foreigner class, Beast class, or something else entirely. We are attempting to catalogue all this information in one place for maximum clarity.

SECTION 1: Other Character’s Reaction (First Impression is the Best Impression) *WARNING LOSTBELT 1 AND 2 SPOILERS AHEAD*

From the first encounter in Camelot right until the end of Lostbelt 2, there are many instances of characters reacting to his presence in….interesting ways.

Bedivere, when first coming in contact with Holmes in Camelot says that "I suppose I've never really been good with people like him. He reminds me of Merlin."

It could refer to the mysterious manner in which both Holmes and Merlin conduct themselves, but better to keep in mind that Merlin is a Grand Caster, and that he manifests as a servant due to specific circumstances (he is not dead).

In Camelot, Mash assumes that Holmes must be Caster class and that the original novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle must have been biographies penned by Dr. Watson under a pen name. Holmes corrects her, saying that: "My true identity, my essence, is slightly different from what you may think. And sad, but that is not the purpose of our gathering here today."

This dilemma is also present in the Sherlock Holmes Trial Quest (which mostly tackles the debate of whether he's a fictional character or someone who actually existed). Holmes has a line where he says:

"Ah, yes. I mentioned I was a Caster. Forgive me, I lied."

This is however immediately followed up by:

"A jest. My apologies. I couldn't help myself." 

This sort of backpedalling raises a doubt as to whether he was really Caster class before, so the nature of his former class is still a mystery. He later mentions that his Ruler class is the World telling him that not all illusions and dreams need to be laid bare.

When meeting with Salieri in Lostbelt 1, Holmes introduces himself as such:"I'm Sherlock Holmes, Chaldea's administrative advisor. I became a servant through unusual means, just like you."

Salieri was only summonable as a servant  because of his reputation caused by the fact that he killed Mozart. He is under the effect of Innocent Monster. It can also be said that Salieri is a lostbelt servant and is significantly more sane than he would have been in a normal summoning, that was the unusual summoning that Holmes was refering to. Does this mean Holmes is not from Proper Human History? 

Sigurd (who's under the control of Surtur), while attacking us in Lostbelt 2 says this: "So, a human and two Heroic Spirits. No, wait. Neither of you are pure Heroic Spirits, are you? You've both got something else mixed in. Hehe, hybrids then. Interesting" 

This is in reference to Holmes and Mash, who are alongside the master at this moment. Mash is a demiservant (human+servant) hence the "Hybrid" comment makes sense, but Holmes? What is the "something else" mixed in with Holmes?

Later in LB2, Holmes requests the assistance of Scáthach-Skadi in beating Surtur. Skadi says that normally she would never pay mind to what a mere Heroic Spirit had to say but: "...but in your particular case…I sense wisdom in those beautiful eyes. You remind me of Baldr, god of light." Quite a bit later, she also has this to say:"Perhaps those piercing eyes of yours in fact surpass Odin's? Mystic Eyes, perchance? ….No, that's not it. They merely reflect your wisdom born of human history's cumulative accomplishments."

She says that's not it, but the fact that it was the first thing she thought of shouldn't be ignored. 

Baldr is the god of light. Holmes' attacks consist of beams of light, and his cane lights up when he's using it in battle.

In Norse legends, Odin is said to have sacrificed one eye to the spring of Mimir in order to get ancient wisdom, the ability to perceive everything in the world. 

SECTION 1.5: More Reactions (From JP Only)

Since it is JP only and there is no official translation for NA yet, this information cannot be 100% confirmed in any way. (Most of this is from Reddit translation done by fans). But as these are also important, it's best to put this information separate section.

Moriarty's interlude involves him finding a micro-singularity in London. At some point the transmission between Chaldea and the master gets cut and Moriarty reveals he created this scenario, made the singularity and everything to get one on one time with the master. He tells us not to trust Holmes. When the time comes, we as master should choose Moriarty over Holmes. 

It has to be kept in mind that Moriarty is not a good guy, he is a character created entirely to oppose Holmes so it is natural that he doesn't trust him. For all we know, it is just emotional manipulation. 

Moriarty's very nature is tied to being the antithesis of Holmes. Holmes might theoretically go against us for the sake of humanity while also trying to keep us safe (the master is in a way, a Watson replacement to him after all) while Moriarty would gladly let humanity burn for the sake of us but also for the sake of being completely opposite to Holmes and keeping his identity as such.

However he does raise valid points, how was Holmes able to rayshift? This part was never explained, and he also mentions that his hypothesis has a fatal contradiction in the fact that Holmes risked his life to save ours. What can be inferred from this is that Holmes is a good man and is on our side, but there is something very weird about him that should not be ignored.

In Lostselt 5 it is mentioned at one point that Zeus called Holmes dangerous, he mustn't look at Zeus or the other gods and that his eyes are enemies of the world.

It has to be mentioned that this is some heavy emphasis on Holmes' eyes (Skadi mentioned Holmes' eyes twice, and she was a god as well). Is it because of the nature of Holmes that he is the one that reveals all truth? Is that in some way detrimental to gods, magic and the world in general?

Recently, from Holmes' skill upgrade interlude there was a section about Holmes saying that he is always an ally of justice and that while he may be on our side, he is still capable of evil but it doesn't change the fact that he is our ally. Even then it seems he has some secrets that can't be understood by himself.

By now with the presence of Dr. Jekyll and Helena and their recounts on what happened, it is confirmed that Holmes was actually "alive"(?)

Some of the adventures penned by Dr. Watson were actually censored versions of the original happenings, which were magical in nature.

Holmes was traumatised(?) by Helena's death back when they were both alive. He swears he would never let that happen again. (remember what happened in lostbelt 2…)

It seems that Holmes himself is not fully sure of what is secret about him. Since he utterly dislikes talking about something without being 100% sure about it (this tendency of his has gotten us in trouble before) plus his general secretive nature, it can be said that this is why he wouldn't talk about that.

SECTION 2: Weird Things That Holmes Does (And Other Questions)

Heroic Spirits are anything but normal, but there are few servants who break the norm even further, and Holmes is one of them.

Holmes is able to Rayshift (presumably) from London, to Camelot, and then to Shinjuku. There are very few servants who are able to manifest themselves. 

Musashi also appears here and there, but it's not a deliberate choice on her part. She is not able to predetermine her next destination. 

Arthur travels from a parallel world to this world, but this is due to "chasing after a certain powerful antagonist, evil omen" - so he tells.

Beast class has the skill of Independent Manifestation which would allow the servant to manifest anywhere they'd want. Merlin, Tamamo Vitch and Shiki possess it. However, it has to be noted that Holmes' rayshifts have a significant toll on his saint graph, as he is unable to fight or defend himself by the time we meet him in Camelot. While normal Independent Manifestation shouldn't lead to the depletion of the user's saint graph. Holmes' class is unknown at the time of his rayshifting. 

At the time of summoning, Heroic Spirits usually reveal their class and True Name (there also are exceptions to the rule). At the time of his summoning, Holmes doesn't reveal his Class: "Are introductions necessary? I am a detective. If you were expecting a hero, my apologies...But if you wanted a detective or an investigator, you drew the right card."

In the case of EOR Servants whose names haven't been found, they reveal their class.

Who summoned Holmes? The only thing we know regarding his presence was that it was first clearly there when he tampered with information in London.

Holmes' illustrator is Yamanaka Kotetsu, who was also the illustrator of the beasts Tiamat and Goetia

The artists who design and illustrate the characters tend to do it in groups of servants who are related to each other in some way (Pako with Arjuna and Karna Chacha and Nobunaga; Miwa Shiro with Brynhildr and Sigurd). It is strange that Kotetsu designed only Holmes, Tiamat and Goetia.

(NEW ADDITION) It should also be noted that as an illustrator Kotetsu has had previous works in a Lovecraftian Guidebook and is also the artist to the Alien God Preistess, somewhat showing how their work leans more to the outerworldly.

SECTION 3: The Design

It is a very commonly noticed fact that Holmes' coat in his third ascension has a very similar shape to that of the Foreigner card artwork.

The pattern work on the coattails of the foreigner art and the inside (blue) part of Holmes' coattails have a very similar, if not exactly same pattern running down the entire length of it. The sphere summoned in Holmes' Noble Phantasm also has the same pattern on its sides and front.

There is a "fog" around Holmes in his third ascension, which is reminescent of the smoke in the card art. (Also can be the London smog).

The glowing section of the abdomen of the being reminds one of the metallic corset that Holmes wears. 

There are 4 notches of smoke on either side of the being (total 8), under their cape. If we stretch our interpretation, then it could mean Holmes' arms and the metal arms that he has is also equal to 8.

In that tangent, the shape of the coat is also similar to that of Saver class Buddha, the fantasy trees from Lostbelt 3 and 4, and the Shadows made by the 6th imaginary element.

The Endless Knot / Shrivatsa symbol on his shoulders is one of the many references of his connection to Tibet (faking his death after the Final Problem). It is an important symbol in both Jainism and Buddhism.

Some of its interpretations include:

The eternal continuum of mind.

The union of wisdom and method.

Since the knot has no beginning or end it also symbolizes the wisdom of the Buddha

the endless cycle of suffering or birth, death and rebirth within Tibetan Buddhism.

The cane that Holmes wields has a pattern on its handle in the shape of a Prayer Wheel. 

However, we are not able to find the meaning behind the script on the cane. Both of us attempted to translate it but failed. If anyone can translate the meaning it would be greatly appreciated.

The holographic books in the base of the unidentified sphere have a pattern on their front that greatly resembles a lotus. 

In Holmes' third ascension, there are a number of magical circuits on his coat.

The circuits are almost only on his left side, with very few circuits on his right side. It's not like it was woven into it, were that the case the circuits would have been all over his coat in a more even distribution. It's almost like an impact radius.

The circuits are very similar to the ones visible on the title screen of the lostbelts, as well as the patterns seen on the fantasy trees.

CONCLUSION SECTION: Something's Up (It's Big Brain Time)

It's clear that something is very strange about Holmes, from his interactions to his design, it's clear that there is too much effort into throwing these hints that it's not just a red herring.

Is he a Foreigner? Beast? Counter Guardian? Some other unknown extra class? It cannot be said at the moment. Holmes' role as a revealer itself is dangerous to mystery and magic, so it can be anything.

 It is also not necessarily true that just because Holmes has all these abnormalities, that he will betray us, or is on the side of evil. When has there been a clear cut side of good or evil anyway? It can be argued that we are the villains in some way, as we bring about the end of these timelines to safeguard our own proper human history. 

Holmes has always been on the side of humanity and will continue to be, the question is what the reveal will be, why and how. That, only time and future chapters can answer, all we can do is speculate.

So, Merlin's father-vision telling him he's magic itself and he just needs to believe in himself to get his magic going again, does this mean he *didn't* need to go to the cave to get it back? Cuz it seems like he needed to recharge in the cave itself, his injuries were healed when he woke up. That seems like magic cave stuff to me.

Also that "always have been and always will be" - I'm taking to mean 'always have been' in the sense that since he's 'magic itself' even before he was born, his magic existed in other, intangible forms, like we are all stardust etc. But now that he is, he will always be, aka he will not die.

5x13 The Diamond of the day pt 2

You know that gif of the cat knocking everything off the table? That's literally Merlin shooting lightning at everyone from his perch on the ridge.

I have a lot of snarky things to say about Merlin coming out of the cave in full Dragoon gear and riding a horse instead of teleporting like the other witches but I'ma keep that to myself.

Mordred is a bitch and Aithusa has terrible aim. At least Aithusa's loyalty to Morgana makes sense.

Arthur said oh shit I'm magic - oh wait no it's that old man again

He also straight up "No! Bad dragon!"-ed Aithusa

Y'know, for all I've watched this episode and screamed about Arthur's death, I don't think I've ever focused on the exact moment he gets stabbed before.

Mordred catches him from behind and he meets it, no fault there. But as soon as he realizes his assailant is the knight who turned on him and joined Morgana, what does he do? HE LOWERS HIS FUCKING SWORD

He leaves himself wide fucking open and vulnerable and Mordred seizes the opportunity. I understand wanting the moment of recognition for Arthur, but on what planet is a trained warrior going to drop his sword mid-attack because he recognizes his attacker as a dude who only just recently decided to forsake him? It's soooooo dumb

There was a whole sequence a few episodes back where Mordred and Arthur are sparring, the point of it was to show that Mordred has become a skilled swordsman. So what exactly was the point in having Mordred run Arthur through as soon as Arthur idiotically lets his guard down? This should've been a meticulously choreographed sword fight, with Mordred getting the upper hand and sticking Arthur properly. Not this nonsense. Look at Arthur's FACE! Oh, Mordred... 👉👈 do you maybe wanna be friends again- STAB ... guess not

Uther's been rolling in his grave but he's taking an extra tumble watching Arthur forget all his skills and training in that moment.

I do appreciate Arthur getting Mordred back though. Like that moment of merciless anger followed by the hurt and regret playing on Arthur's face, warring with surety and responsibility. It was good.

I've rewatched the big confession scene about 16 times just now.

I don't quite understand why Merlin took Arthur to the woods to begin with. Instead of bringing him to the med tent in the battlefield or back to Camelot. What was the reason?

Merlin saying it feels strange (to use magic freely in front of Arthur) and him just going 'yeah' completely deadpan makes me laugh every time.

I really feel like Arthur's head should be elevated at a further incline if he's going to be fed.

Gaius refusing to outright expose Merlin as the sorcerer but nonetheless letting Gwen figure it out on her own warms my heart.

My God Arthur is sitting there dying, feeling betrayed about his best friend 'lying' to him, and still he can't stop himself from looking at Merlin's mouth.

Hey um random but why does Gwaine even know where Merlin and Arthur are headed? Why would Gaius tell him?

Arthur looks at Merlin so lovingly after he's killed Morgana 😭😭

And now he's literally grabbing at the man's hand 😭 "just hold me, please"

That's gotta be the gayest death scene in television history. If you can watch that without thinking Arthur puts his hand on the back of Merlin's head because some part of him wants to bring him down for a kiss, or that "just hold me, please" is in any way shape or form a 'bros' thing, and certainly not at all an intentional mirror/callback to Isolde dying in Tristan's arms, then I'm afraid you are what we professionals refer to as a dumb-as-nails fucknugget, more commonly phrased as 'willfully ignorant'.

"All that you have dreamt of building has come to pass" yeah except for the whole, y'know, magic still being illegal thing.

I've said this before, but, while I'm sure there was a determined intention to have Arthur die in his armor, probably in some kind of attempt to make sure the audience knows he's died a warrior's death, I *really* think it was kinda stupid that Merlin never removed it, despite Arthur being weak, despite the fact that there was something like five days between him getting stabbed and him actually dying, despite that for the duration of that time they were traveling or hiding out. Merlin managed to produce a cloak to put on Arthur, why did he need the full armor on that whole time? Like even if they left the chainmail on, those plates on his shoulder were just getting in the way, and it looked quite uncomfortable.

Also not for nothing but Lancelot got like, every flower in the forest surrounding lush verdant greens in his death boat, Arthur gets a bunch of sticks.

It suddenly occurs to me, watching this now, that the reason Leon/Percival is such a common side pairing in Merthur fics, is because these two motherfuckers are the only original Knights of the Round Table to survive the series. 🤦‍♀️ I dunno how I failed to notice that before now. My stupidity amazes me.

I'm *really* glad they decided to do this scene with Gwen wearing the Pendragon red dress instead of the black mourning dress. Yes she looks fabulous in it but it's more the symbolism than the 'reality' - with Gwen wearing her house's colors it represents a continuation rather than a finality. Camelot will go on, Gwen will undoubtedly end the war on magic and with Morgana dead (and frankly, I think by now she already brought about the death of all the angry incel type rulers in Albion) there stands to reason her reign will begin with a period of peace, possibly longer than Arthur's. We kind of have to assume that the 'time the poets speak of' is, inevitably, Gwen's reign - which only came about through Arthur's death. It's a little bit toooo subtle in my opinion, but at the same time, I understand the need for the focus on Merlin and Arthur - after all, this show was their journey - not leaving much time to focus on Gwen and Camelot in the aftermath of Arthur's death.

I will just say, the first time I watched this that fucking truck scared the ever living shit out of me. I also just immediately, viscerally hated that scene and declared it invalid - but I think it was because the truck made me jump out of my skin. It has since grown on me, particularly once I started reading 'Arthur Returns' fic.

Everything beyond this point is post-series spec and headcanon, so if that's not your jam you can exit safe in the knowledge that as usual, if there's anything worth commenting on in the S5 extras, I will create a separate post!

I have a lot of thoughts about Gwen and Merlin post-Camlann.

For one, poor fucking Gwen. She's lost her father, her brother, and her husband, all by what, age 30? That's rough. And who knows what happened to her mom, that was pre-series and I don't think it was ever mentioned.

Merlin, dear god poor Merlin. First of all, I just wanna say straight off that my instinctive headcanon about Merlin was that he never returned to Camelot. I couldn't really say why exactly. I just don't think he could stand being there after Arthur's death. But practically speaking, Merlin's still got Aithusa to deal with, that dragon needs some godsdamned house training asap. He's still the last Dragonlord, it's reasonable to assume he'd immediately take that on considering Aithusa is partially responsible for Arthur's death (the sword Mordred killed Arthur with, only succeeded in killing Arthur because it had been forged in Aithusa's fire-breath) so he's either going to attempt to train the bad behaviors out of Aithusa, or...well...

The only thing is, I do not believe Merlin would abandon Gwen, or Gaius. So my hc is inherently flawed. I do think Merlin probably spend a couple months with his mum, and I do think he ultimately settled near lake Avalon waiting for Arthur's return.

But I do wonder, what must their relationship have been like? Gwen, surely, would've sought his guidance in establishing laws governing the use of magic. And surely, peace cannot last indefinitely, so Merlin absolutely would've defended Camelot and protected Gwen. There's just no way he could've completely turned his back on them, but I doubt he could bear living in Camelot. And Gwen is both strong and practical enough to get on without him there 24/7, even though I'm sure she'd miss him.

I also think she would've found love again. Whether with Leon, as many people hc, or someone else not in the series.

ANYWAY.

From Gladiator to Knight Chapter 28 An Easy Death

Claire Jamie Tianna Arthur Morgarna Daggini

Arthur

"I have decided to have Morgarna put to death by beheading instead of burning. Daggini will do it. But, we still will hear her plea. Bors, fetch the prisoner."

Claire

I look towards Daggini when Arthur appoints him executioner. I can tell by the look on his face, that he doesn't want to do it. I also know, that he will. He will see her dead as his king wishes.

Bors brings Morgarna in. She meets my eye and I nod, letting her know that I did as I said I would. She stands on trembling legs before Arthur and his most trusted Knights and Dames.

"I did it. I tried to kill you with poison giving to you by Mordred. Please, don't hold him responsible. It is all on my shoulders. I will take whatever punishment you decide. I just ask one thing."

"Yes?"

"That I might be able to say goodbye to my son."

"Granted. I will have Knight Jamie and Dame Claire bring him to you. You will say your goodbyes and, in the morrow, at dawn, you will be beheaded in the courtyard by Daggini. Bors, take her back now."

We are then all dismissed.

Tianna

Arthur stops me on the way out, inquiring if I wish to be a witness to the execution.

"No sire'. And, I believe I can speak for my husband, that he won't wish to either."

"Then you will both head to the glen to spend a few days with Merlin with Jamie and Claire."

"Thank you sire'. He bows to Claire and I and slips away.

"I just couldn't. I am glad she won't be burned. I witnessed a burning in Rome. It gave me nightmares for months after. I just can't watch another execution." I explain to Claire.

Claire

"I understand. I saw at lot of violence in my orginal time. I believe that once we are settled. When we are no longer jumping through time, that we all be able to work out some of the drama from the past. And from what I see of what Merlin is bringing back from that time, we should be able to."

There is a knock on the door and Daggini enters. "Sorry to disturb you Ladies, I just have a question for Dame Claire."

"Yes?"

"What herb causes a quick death?" From behind me, I hear Tianna gasp. I reach back and touch her arm before answering him.

"Foxglove. Why?" He gives me a sad smile.

"No reason." And then he slips out with a bow.

"Is he?" Tianna asks. But then Jamie is there saying it is time to take Mordred to his mam. I have no time to answer her. But, I would have said,' yes, I think he is.'

Jamie

"He is in the kitchen." I tell her as we head out. We find the lad, curled on himself, in a corner. Claire walks over and kneels beside him. She strokes his back before asking,

"Do you wish to see your mother?" He jumps into her arm and wraps his arms and legs tight around her. "I take that as a yes." She says with a smile. "Do you wish to walk or be carried?"

"Carried please me lady." He whispers.

"Carried it is." She walks slowly toward the steps to the dungeon. Her hand doesn't stop moving, stroking the lad's back and hair, all the way down.

"Ye will make a bonny mam." I tell her. She smiles but it holds a note of sadness. When we reach the bottom of the stairs, the lad wiggles out of his arms and runs to his mam.

Morgarna

My son! I can't hold him, due to the chains, but, I must get him into a safe position as possible.

"Modred, I have to leave you. You mustn't blame Arthur for it. It was all my doing. I tricked you into giving him the cup of poison. He doesn't blame you and will see you safe when I am not here. Show him respect. As your King. Do not hate him for what I did."

"Mother, please stay. Don't go!"

"I can't stay. And, you must go. Mother must have some alone time. I love you son. Goodbye."

"I love you. I don't want you to go!" His cries tear at my heart. I do all I can.

"Please. Take him." I ask Dame Claire. She walks over and lifts his stiff body up. He collapses against her and starts to wail. She hurries him away as her husband follows.

Claire

Her own cries follow us up. I feel sorry for her. But, more sorry for the weeping child in my arms. He clings to me like a vine, and although several servants we pass, offer to take him, I keep ahold of him until Queen Guinevere appears.

"I have him Dame Claire." I release him into the safety of her arms.

Daggini

I head to the kitchen in the darkest part of the night. I make a meal of bread and cheese. I add two glasses of wine. In one I mix the Foxglove. I carry the tray down to the dungeon. I am tasked with killing her. I have decided to let her decide how. I don't wish to behead her. To kill in cold blood.

"Morgarna?" She jerks up and I know she has been asleep. "I have brought you some food and a choice. The glass of wine on the left contains a herb that will give you an easy death. You will simply drift back to sleep and never awake again. Or, you can drink the other and I will take your head in the morrow."

"Why are you doing this?"

"Not for you. For myself and for Modred. I don't want to kill in cold blood and, it will be easier on your son if you passed in your sleep. You needn't worry about your soul. I will take responsibility when the time comes. I will be here but will turn around. You can decide in private."

I turn. I give her time to decide and act. I turn back to find the bread and cheese ate and the wine on the left drank. She lays on the floor. Her breathing is slow, and gets slower as I sit beside her until it finally stops. I gather up the tray. I pour the undrunk wine out and hide the two cups in my room. I sleep well that night.

Claire

We are awakened, before dawn, by banging on the door. I start to jump up, thinking there is an emergency. Jamie is faster. He opens the door to revel Merlin.

"What is it?" I ask.

"It is Morgarna. She is dead. Was found dead this morning. Arthur is furious. Denied the chance to publicly execute her."

"What do you think caused her death?" I have my suspensions. Merlin confirms them.

"Poison. But, Arthur can not know that. Can you convince him it was a heart attack?"

"I will do my best." We all hurry out the room. Arthur is pacing back and forth. I touch his arm to stop him.

"You have heard?"

"I have. I believe it to be a heart attack. She was terrified when I last saw her. That kind of stress can easily cause a fatal heart attack."

"Come Arthur. Let's get you some wine before I escort the Frasers to my glen." He allows himself to be lead away.

As we are heading back to our room to get ready, we pass Daggini. I catch his eye and see the truth. She was posioned by Foxglove. He gave her an easy death. I squeeze his arm in passing, letting him now I understand.

We prepare to leave and I stop by Tianna and Paul's door. I knock briskly. "Come on. We are leaving for the glen in five minutes." We meet up with Merlin and turn to head out when heavy breathing is heard behind us. Tianna and Paul, breathing heavy, sweaty , and disheveled, running to meet us.

i'm back with my bs. this is for my bestie @lady-ofmagic-andstars. basically, all of my dumb thoughts while i watched 'darkest hour pt 2', 04.02 of merlin. in case you weren't aware.. ✨spoilers✨

right off the bat i'm sad

ok when i first watched this i was really confused. i mean, you see others when they interact with the dorocha have that perpetual frost on their face right? all of them, every single one. so imagine my surprise when merlin has no frost on his face, and he's miserable yea- but he's not dead??

like tbh, watching this again, ik why but when i first watched this, i was SO confused.
