Troubling Questions

Warning- Borderline child abuse
"Daddy, what's outside the sea?" Minami had suddenly asked her father one day. Her father seemed to quiet, and his smile slipped.
He sighed, "Why ask such a question?"
Minami stared at the ground for a second, why did she ask it? Maybe the question just suddenly plagued her mind out of nowhere. "..."
Her father shook his head, "Just curious?" ...Yeah, she guesses that's right, she nods her head. "Fine, I'll tell you, there is nothing outside the sea, nothing, absolutely nothing," Her father responded with a smile back on his face.
Nothing? Nothing. Nothing.
--------------------------------------------------
A few days ago Minami had sneaked out of her room and wandered around the crimson sea town. She managed to wander into the dungeons, she found something there the brought a question to her mind, that she continued to ponder over for the next few days. "Daddy, why is that man so sad?" She decided to ask as her father helped her with a puzzle.
Her father looked up from the puzzle, a smile still spread across his face now combined with a confused expression, "What man, sweetheart? Everyone in the sea is absolutely happy!"
"That man with a tail like yours," Minami responded as she fit in a puzzle piece. The man in the dungeon did remind her awfully a lot of her father.
"Are you talking about old?" He asked, "He's not sad, sweetie, just grumpy," He finished as he popped in a puzzle piece.
Old was extremely grumpy, he mostly just ever glared at her when she saw him, which wasn't a lot considering her father didn't allow her out of the house much, but Old was not the man she was referring to. "No, the man in-" She paused for a moment wondering if she should say it, knowing she'll probably get told off for sneaking out, "-the dungeon."
Her father immediately froze, his smile slipping, "What?" his voice came out extremely cold.
He must have not heard her right the first time so she said it again, "The man in the dungeon, why is he-" Her father leaned over the puzzle and seized one of her tiny wrists in his hand and yanked her forward, his hand clenched hard around the fragile bone. She fell onto the puzzle, accidentally breaking most of the pieces. Her father grabbed her other wrist with his other hand and put his face right over her's.
"Did you sneak out?" he asked his voice still cold, a glare on his face. He looked so scary, Minami had never seen him like this before. Daddy was always smiley and happy, why is he making such a scary face? She then acknowledged the pain in her wrists, that wasn't normal either. Daddy would never hurt her, he loved her, he wouldn't even raise his voice at her, he never even scolded her before, what brought this on all of a sudden? She stayed in stunning scared silence as she nodded her head.
He pulled her close, "Why?" he grunted out. She squirmed nervously in his grip but didn't answer. "Minami?!" He yelled as he shook the young girl's body.
Tears sprung to her eyes and she started to sob at how scary Daddy was being. "I-hck-w-was just bored," She responded as tears streamed from her beautiful red eyes.
He growled, "You could have asked me, mommy, or Fukami to play with you if you were so bored! Why did you choose to go outside?" he yelled, as the young girl continued to cry. "How many times have I told you not to go outside?" He continued as he shook the girl, "How many times have warned not to go near the dungeon!?"
Her mother must have sensed the commotion because she soon came running into the girl's room only to see her usual happy husband shaking their crying daughter as he yells. "Sal, please calm down! You're scaring her!" Her mother yelled.
Sal froze and stared at Minami for a second, before releasing the girl's wrists. She scooted far away from the man, all the way to the foot of her bed. She wrapped her arms around her knees as she shivered, as she watched her dad shake her hand, "Apologies." He gave a fake cough, "I'm sorry sweetheart, I got a little too angry there."
The girl didn't respond and just buried her face in her knees. Her mother looked nervously between the two.
"You should listen next time, and daddy won't have to get angry like that," He said, his usual smile coming back. He got up walked up to her and squatted down to her level, "You have to stay here Minami or Daddy and Mommy can't protect you."
She wanted to ask 'protect her from what?' but then she decided not to ask any troubling questions like that ever again.
