What is your thought on Mind Bomb by Zdarsky?
Trepidation? 😅
Like a year ago I was feeling positive, having enjoyed Zdarky's writing in The Knight and then that preview of the Zur storyline in "I Am A Gun." TMWSL was in early days, and it was fun to make connections and wonder about how it might all tie together.
But after that, Bruce getting zapped to an AU and Gotham War felt like speedruns without real emotional payoff. When Zdarsky brought in Joker again, it was with Darwin Halliday, who apparently created not only Joker himself but three of them, not only calling back to a Black Label story I was praying DC would leave behind, but bringing back three Jokers when we already had a separate title with two Jokers. The idea that different DC titles could tie together in some cool revelations became laughable once I realized the timeline issues were getting worse and worse, and Gotham War only affirmed that continuity is a fool's errand. When I read/hear writers assert that they definitely totally collaborated on an event that was rife with inconsistencies, I just feel stupid expecting a payoff.
Which is all to say I'm reserving judgment until I see how Mindbomb ends— but really I'm waiting to see how Joker: Year One goes. It's not that I think that the first two Mindbomb issues are bad. But they are… kind of rote? They hit many batjokes beats, to be sure, but I think I'm too comics-tired to really enjoy them. The only thing I've found really interesting is Joker's seemingly suicidal behavior, and I assume we're going to get more into his mindset in the J:YO storyline.
Where apparently we've got some version of three Jokers waiting. And I'm already expecting that it's not going to tie into Joker's mindset in TMWSL, which I guess is just as well after how that ended.
But maybe I'm wrong! I was wrong about Deadly Duo, after all. Maybe Zdarsky will get back to the storybuilding that pulled me in before. Maybe whatever his 3J take turns out to be won't make me want to tear my hair out. Only way to know is to wait and see.
Something I've been thinking about is how I would probably react differently to some comics if I read them five, ten years from now. With older comics, I'm jumping around the past, reading stories in isolation, already knowing what the future holds. Definitely more entertaining than trying to get a full picture of the present and seeing a mess. 😬

I'm fully aware that it's not meant to be seen like this, but after the whole Zur fiasco I'm not sure if it's smart to go on a camping trip with your father, just you two, to the middle of nowhere and oh, please leave your gadgets and weapons at home, son.

Romana: (About Matthias) I want to talk to him. I want to look him in the eye, and ask him what he really wants. Leela: Very well. We will do what we can. But Romana? Romana: Yes? Leela: While you'll look him in the eye, I shall be holding his knife-hand.

BATMAN NO.141 • cover art • David Finch [Jan 2024]
Zur-En-Arrh has done the unthinkable. And now, cut off from everything and everyone, Batman has to face off against his most devastating enemy in a brutal fight for the future as the specter of The Joker hangs over everything. The stunning conclusion to Mindbomb is here!

Oh. Oh no. For the first time in my life pretty much ever I think I'm vaguely interested in a Batman vs Joker comic. This is a humiliating turn of events for me. It's never a good idea to get pre-invested in the potential of a DC comics storyline, that way only ever lies disappointment and "I don't know what I expected" because I should know better. But I can't help it! I took ten years off and came back to a DC that's better than when I left it! I have hope in my heart! And, for all that Gotham War ended with a whimper rather than a bang, I still can see so much potential. Imagine what a real shakeup of the dynamics in the Batfam would look like! I don't believe for a second that they'd do it, but imagine if they actually had Dick in the role of being the family leader, except as Nightwing this time instead of stepping into Batman's boots. He wouldn't want to be the patriarch in the same way Bruce was, but he's about the same age as Bruce was when Bruce adopted him, so imagine the tasty tasty parallels they could do with Dick suddenly in charge of a feral gremlin charge of his own (Damian), some actual support both emotionally and on the streets (Tim and Barbara), a team he actually would be able to call on for help when he needed it (Jason, Steph, Cass, Duke), that in some ways he has it easier than Bruce did, he's not as wrapped up in his own pain in the same way, but in other ways it's harder, he doesn't have Alfred, he has so many moving pieces that are all clashing and aren't necessarily going to listen to him (Steph and Cass and Duke aren't loyal to him the way he was loyal to Bruce)(and then there would be Jason's *waves hands* everything) and it would be out of his control that he'd feel responsible for and it would be a conflict between setting himself up in Bludhaven versus how Gotham still needs the team, not just Bruce being an asshole out there on his own--and god, running into Bruce, always wondering if he approves of Dick's style of leadership versus "You don't get a vote on whether to approve or not." There is SO MUCH that could be done with it! I can't help kind of being fond of the Gotham War set-up, because I like drama and I like Bruce's up and down character arc, and I like a complicated, sharp-edged Bruce who does inexcusable things because his brain is fucked up and lying to him, even when I know it'll disappoint me. But also. I was reading Batman #139 and oh, oh no, oh noooo, I'm interested in "Mindbomb" as a story--as a Joker story!--because it really is the perfect time for it, isn't it? Bruce has been overwhelmed for months now, he's in such a bad place mentally and emotionally that he's letting his fears of loss win and pushing his entire family away, he's doing horrible things to them because he can't handle loving them like he does, so he's separated himself from them, all while he thinks he's in control, but he's not, his brain is absolutely lying to him, and it's hissing in his ear to strip everything that Bruce loves away from himself and so that only Batman is left. Zur-En-Arrh is right there. "I'm in control!" Bruce screams in his own mind, all while Zur just rips through him and so easily takes over. Bruce has no control, he is so, so wrong about all of this, and oh boy the Joker is getting exactly what he wants, isn't he? No more annoying riff raff to get in the way or for Batman to care more about than him. No more Selina, no more kids, no more friends, no more loved ones--just Zur-En-Arrh, the most "pure" Batman in the Joker's eyes, now it's just the two of them. And that's everything Joker has ever wanted. And I don't want to find that to be an interesting extension of everything that led up to and during Gotham War, but crap yeah okay that's kind of a well-timed story when I look at it through that lens. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, I'm going to be disappointed in wherever this goes, but dammit. The story kind of got me.

i am so late to the party but how did gotham war end up finishing? was bruce really being controlled by zur?
well, the actual gotham war story ended with us discovering vandal savage bought the wayne manor because there's a (once assumed to be lazarus) pit that is the source of his immortal-ness, and then he stole all of selina's criminal gang, and was trying to attract a magical meteor, or something. the rest of the batfam join forces to defeat every other gotham rogue who were out causing problems as usual (duke knocks out two-face, it was funny). jason takes the batwing and flies into the meteor to save the east coast, bruce thinks he's dead (he's not), selina falls into the explosion, bruce thinks she's dead (she's not). bruce realises he's like, kind of fucking up a lot, and decides to leave the family (unclear motive) to work on that, having a really underwhelming conversation with dick about it before he drives off into the sunset. literally. to really add the nail to the coffin, a random thug finds out bruce is batman!
so it was all in all a useless story! thank god it is over.
except. the big issue. zur is still very much around and despite bruce's stupid belief, very much in control. we know this for certain now because this stupid story is now back in the main batman run and the basis for the next arc "Mindbomb":
in Gotham War: Scorched Earth (the gotham war finale) jason tries to tell bruce (AGAIN) that zur is literally driving him insane, but bruce deflects and passes the blame onto dick. again at the end, bruce insists to dick that he is in control and zur is not the issue.
then, in batman #139, which takes place immediately after gotham war:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
zur pushes bruce back and takes full control because he wants to kill the joker because that's what the mission needs (what the FUCK is the mission at this point), also revealing that bruce was never actually in control. to make matters worse, as people theorised, it wasn't just main continuity zur controlling him, but zur from every universe bruce had travelled through.
Tumblr media
who fucking knows what will happen now. as far as i know, no one is enjoying this stupid overarching arc anymore. everyone should read the current detective comics run (by ram v) for much better mentally unstable batman story and a far more compelling plot.

Okay, I'm a bit confused by this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman and Robin has two issues coming out in January, a regular one and an annual. Neither one has Čižmešija listed as the artist for the interior pages.
Plus it sounds like Batman and Robin #5 will simply be the conclusion of the first arc, not the start of a new two-parter story.
So...did they mean they are drawing for Batman and Robin starting in February with #6? That sounds more plausible to me.
