@nakotls caught this pic of me last night right about the time I decided to let go of everything and ask, out loud, that I make $200 so I could pay my rent. Scared. Ashamed. Pitiful. These are some of the feelings right there. Then I said... Fuck this, it’s gotta happen today, I’m 7 days behind and I’m NOT stopping until I get it. I said, “hey y’all I’m a keep this real with you, I need to pay my rent today and this is the only place I work now. So, holla at your girl if there’s a part-time gig you love, and feel free to give!” And people started giving 20s. A man even looked me in the eyes and said “RENT!” Insane because people were thanking me for sharing MY gift and I realized...artists, if you want to know who you’re really impacting, get in the square or the subway with the people and find out. On Tuesday, June 27th, join MTA Arts & Design Manager Lydia Bradshaw for a discussion on performing arts in the NYC Subway and the recent Music Under New York auditions held at Grand Central Terminal. Then, enjoy performances and hear the experiences of a few of the more than 350 soloists and groups that participate in the program.

Don Witter, Jr., a dedicated #MusicUnderNewYork member for over two decades, will be greatly missed. Trained as a classical pianist in the Bronx from the age of four, Don debuted at Carnegie Recital Hall at five years old and after developing a passion for classical guitar at the age of seven, he performed guitar throughout New York City and returned to perform at the Weil Recital Hall 45 years later. A native New Yorker and graduate of the High School of Music and Art, Don was a beloved part of #MTAMusic and was passionate about sharing his sensitive and spirited music with people who would not normally have access to a classical guitar concert. A proud judge at the annual Music Under New York Auditions, Don valued connecting to people though music. Over the years, Don performed at many events and well-known venues throughout the city and produced CDs, wrote sheet music, web and magazine stories and participated as the subject of documentaries. #MTAArts sends condolences to Don’s family, friends, fellow musicians, and his audience of millions who will miss him and his musical gift that he shared with us all.
