I'll give you a snippet from one of two Library AU fics I plan to write, both based on things that have actually happened at my job 😆 Shout out to @yallwildinrn for throwing ideas back and forth with me for the second one, and to the fic "Scenes From Bay Ridge Public Library" by @too-young-to-fall-in-love (StuckIn85 on Ao3) for showing me that there is indeed a way to shove my blorbos into a library setting LMAO

"Never Fall In Love With A Stranger"

His brow is knit in concentration and he is bent over the desk, carefully applying a protective adhesive cover to a paperback. The barely-blue button up he wears is rolled up to his elbows, and as he shifts his weight to readjust, Illya's eyes are drawn down across his broad shoulders to where the shirt dips at the small of his back. The dark navy slacks he's wearing hug his form, and good lord, does he have the ass and thighs of a Greek God. He's tall, too; towering over his coworkers like Illya does. His hair, styled out of the natural curl Illya can see hints of, is black as ink, and a silken lock has fallen free into his eyes. Illya finds that he wants to gently tuck that strand back into place and that terrifies him. What terrifies him more is when Joanna returns and directs the stranger's attention to Illya. Illya's heart drops into his stomach. The stranger flashes him a smile that nearly knocks Illya off his feet, then approaches the computer closest to him. “Hey there, what can I help you with today?” he rattles off a clearly rehearsed script. “Uhm,” Illya swallows down the lump in his suddenly dry throat, “I am going to heritage department. Don't need help.” The stranger's eyes widen almost imperceptibly at Illya's voice, no doubt surprised by his still-thick accent. They're a deep shade of blue, like the Baltic Sea, but in that imperceptible widening, Illya thinks he could see an imperfection in one. The pupil a size larger, maybe. It's hidden away again too fast for him to make it out. “Well,” the new face drawls in a tone that says that Illya has been quiet for far too long, “Let me know if that changes.”

I want you all to know that I got this particular idea while at work and didn't have my phone so I had to scribble it down on a piece of scratch paper and hide it in my pocket 😆

Umm i think in April ‘23?? @dontirrigateme and I had just watched the x-men first class movies and wanted to watch more James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, so of course we watched BoB… the world has never been the same

I’m trying to read Ambrose’s book right now, but I have Winters’ Beyond Band of Brothers, Guarnere and Babe’s book, and a couple others on my shelf!! (if anyone finds Webster’s shark book i promise you my first born for a copy of that)

Oh goodness there’re so many!!! I suppose my favorites always depend on what show I'm currently watching, but I'll just include the characters I've most written/read about and how I'm currently feeling :)

1. Arthur Pendragon (BBC Merlin)

This is mostly because I think he's easy to write about. I relate to him a lot ^^

2. Merlin (BBC Merlin)

My Murder child, Merlin. God, entity, little boi. He just got it all XD

3. Sir Leon (Fandom BBC Merlin)

Immortal, aro/ace headcanon and the suffering

4. Morgana (BBC Merlin)

Best villain arc I've seen in a long time. So good, I like her better evil than good.

5. Lance McClain (Voltron)

My very first little blorbo with so much angst he got his own tag for it. #langst

6. Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter-Book series)

As much as JKR sucks, Draco Malfoy just hits deep for me. I think you can see a theme by now in which I name a ton of characters who are just angst, but like, goddamn it. I grew up with the series and he just .... He's just Draco

7. Levy McGarden (Fairy Tail)

Smart, adorable, brave and so, soooo forgiving!!! Also, coolest power ever!!!

8. Gajeel (Fairy Tail)

I love how he basically has his own life in the show, separate from the main plot.

9. The blue lion (Voltron)

I dunno. She's just the water element. I loved the mermaid episode and it helps that she chose Lance before anyone else ever did.

10. I think I'm in love with too many characters. I usually enjoy all of them a lot. It's hard for me to really Pick favorites, but I think I'll pick Venom (movie) for this one.

1. cybersix/adrian seidleman — aka my first impression of gender fluidity. this show came out when i was 4 and to this day i still mourn that it wasn’t longer. it was so insanely influential for its time in terms of gender rep (the main character’s disguise was a male school teacher who pretty much everyone had a crush on) and i remember genuinely crying to my mom when this show stopped airing at its regular time slot.

2. eris — at the ripe age of 8 this woman was my bisexual awakening. and honestly, more than likely the introduction to my obsession with villains. to this day i would literally let this woman do whatever she wanted to me.

3. loki laufeyson — the man, the myth, the legend. truly the one that started it all. the og summer blorbo. i’ve literally been obsessed with this man since i was a kid reading my uncle’s comic book collection past bedtime. so many iterations have come and gone (some better than others) but regardless this mother fucker has rotted my brain.

4. dr. spencer reid — probably the most influential character in regards to my writing. he was the first character that i wrote an entire fic about (along with an even longer sequel) which really helped me develop as a writer. also, now that i’m older i realize his neurodivergent rep was very affirming to witness!

5. fleabag — god, i could go on and on about how this character and phoebe’s writing makes me feel for a century so i’ll just say no other character has made me feel the way this one does.

6. silco — he’s everything i love in a character. from his overall design to his motivations and traits, silco is perfect and i thank arcane every day for creating him.

7. nick miller — watching this character is like looking in a mirror and i hate it. everything he does or says is so ridiculously specific to my psyche that i sometimes have to cover my face out of sheer secondhand embarrassment. i love him dearly.

8. ash — this is baby. my darling. my sweet cheese. despite her kit in game being very mid i will never main another character simply because she is the moment! her backstory is compelling. her and horizon’s relationship prior to the games is so interesting that i think about writing a 33737 page fic of it every day. i just love her and her broken little simulacrum brain.

9. mizu — she is everything i want in strong, female character. blood thirsty motivations that lead to unwavering goals, complicated relationships, the external hotness of a thousand suns. mizu is incredible and i am so happy that blue eye samurai got picked up for season two!!

10. astarion — wow, what a surprise! the vampire is here! who would’ve guessed? seriously though, i know i post about him pretty much every day and make jokes about how hot he is and blah, blah, blah but he truly means so much to me. all of the writers involved in creating him (and neil obvs) did such an incredible and sincere job. you can tell they put so much care into crafting his (and so many other characters’) story and i’ll forever be thankful.

28. Top ten things that you love about your blorbo

• She's so pretty uwu <3 Her heterochromia is a really cool touch to her character design, and I love the punk 90s milf look. I'm using this opportunity to point out that Bella is unusually tall for a woman, but you can rarely notice it because Mandrake is the main Tall Bitch of the film, and there are few other adult humans to compare. I also very much enjoy her looks because she is Very Shaped and as much as I'm looking respectfully, I am most certainly still Looking. She's making it very hard not to look. [The film also never uses her looks to demean her character, but that's just Ghibli for you. Respect women juice has been dranken]

• She shamelessly reclaims her unusual appearance. Messy blue hair, mismatched eyes, pointy nose, massive stature and you won't see a hint of insecurity in this woman. She's glamorous and happily high-maintenance (wears makeup everyday, sharp manicured nails, hair-curlers routine), straying out of mainstream beauty standards whenever she feels like it (vibrant makeup colours, mismatched eyeshadow, bright high-heeled boots, skull earrings). Note the high contrast between the orphanage's matron and Bella. That woman sticks out like a sore thumb but she's oozing with confidence.

• She's not afraid of dirty labour and gross things. Look at her holding the damn slug with her bare hands and putting her entire arm into the gross gunk of her table without an ounce of disgust. She's not some dainty wimp who's afraid of chipping her perfectly manicured nails on the carcass of a roadkill. She's part of the primordial soup and she has no fucks to give.

• She is SO capable and versatile. Non-gentle reminder that Bella Yaga has been single-handedly managing the household; daily chores such as laundry, shopping, cooking (the artbook states that Bella is a great cook), probably cleaning to a certain extent; working on magic and the chores that come with it, foraging and gathering plants, processing the raw materials, preparing the spells and potions; and managing her spell business while maintaining her clientele and deliveries? And that's just the chores thing, but there's the whole bookkeeping aspect of maintaining the household and her business. Clearly Mandrake uses the demons card for any possible task, but she cannot do that, and the end credits show that Mandrake is only starting to learn how to cook! Bella is also the one who drives the car, and she seems to have the skills to repair it as well according to the credits. So yeah TLDR Bella is the housewife, the breadwinner, the Mom Friend, the Beer Dad, the Vodka Aunt, and the most reliable person of the house. We love a multitasking queen

• She's hot-headed and seemingly immune to bullshit - you're not getting away with being a treacherous little bitch without experiencing the Smack Of The Century. She also doesn't seem to be receptive to Earwig's manipulative ass trying to sweet-talk her way into practicing magic; I'm on the fence about the morality of Earwig's controlling behaviour so it's nice to have at least one character who doesn't fall for her bullshit.

• She's officially described as a skilled magician, even to demon standards! She has a whole ass notebook with hand-written spells that she probably crafted herself. And considering that the book looks childishly girly and worn-out, we can assume that she started writing in this notebook when she was a child.

• She's considerate and emotionally intelligent enough to live with and manage an unstable demon. Idk if that really counts as a quality because that's very much a fear response from abusive behaviour but hey, Mandrake loses his shit very easily and she's able to interact with him on a daily basis without dying so that's pretty girlbossy in my book. She seems supportive of him and obviously cares for him and his comfort, even if he's difficult. [Note that in the book, she does fight back when Mandrake assaults her]

• She's one of the queerest characters of the Ghibli pantheon. Excentric and glamorous, skilled beyond classic gender roles. She was ambiguously involved with Earwig's mother and Mandrake. Her husband is the twink of all times. She's the gruff drummer who starts the bar fight and WINS the bar fight, she's the blunt auntie who shittalks your parents with her cigarette hanging off her lip.

• She's a professional drummer and Mandrake thinks she's really skilled. Drumming takes a highly efficient coordination and an incredible sense of rhythm. Drummers are human metronomes with the stamina of a beast - they're the backbone of their band along with the bassist and yet they're always placed in the back of the stage bc otherwise they'll be too noisy and drown out the rest of the band. Managing to be both the brawn who bangs like a caveman, and the galaxy brain who maintains the entire song's tempo. Drummers are the unsung heroes hidden in the dark, carrying the weight of the drumline. That's Bella Yaga for you. /lh

• She still gets flustered when she's shown affection. That's it that's the thing I can't be normal about

🏐honestly, I’m not a big fan of sports despite how much I try to change that fact lol. But I do find volley ball quite fun!!

🐈‍⬛my favorite animals are cats! All kinds, wild or home cats. Fun fact, in elementary school my hyper fixation was definitely cats- so I was known as that one kid who was overly obsessed with them, I even convinced my mom to let me get a dress that had cats’s plastered all over it and I wore it almost every single day.

😇this is a really tough one since I love so many characters, but it definitely has to be between N from murder drones or Beetlejuice, specifically the one from the musical. (They both are also some of my f/os! )

📚my favorite book is probably journey to the west, an old Chinese legend book. I actually found the book from a tv show called Lego Monkie Kid, which is actually based off of Journey to the West!

It is done!

A lot of our knowledge of ancient Egyptian gods comes from spells, which sometimes record narratives or pieces of narratives as historiolas, but a lot of the time just give us lists of gods that it’s kinda hard to infer a personality from. Which is why I thought it would be fun to go through some collections of spells and track how many times certain gods are invoked alongside another certain gods, and to see if those patterns could say anything about that god’s relationships to other gods from. Because my autism compels me to make bar graphs, and it especially compels me to make bar graphs that I can use to make headcanons about my blorbos.

What counts as gods being invoked or referenced together is kinda subjective sometimes, but it’s the general patterns that are important with this so not counting some things that maybe should have been counted is probably fine. I thought I’d do Set first for this, because I think his position in the pantheon is really interesting and also really seemingly contradictory at times.

What we’ve learned from these charts is that most of Set’s social life is just him muttering evilly in front of a brainstorming board that has “ways to murder Osiris Horus” written on it. (/joke)

For some gods I thought it would be interesting to track how many of the references implied a negative relationship between them and Set, so I kept track of how many references specifically implied a negative relationship (things like saying that god and Set acted in opposition to each other, or that Set wronged them in some way, or just that they don’t like each other) as well as just the total number of references. On my graph this reflected by having the number of those references be coloured red, and all the other references that were just neutral and didn’t imply anything (or sometimes very occasionally implied a positive relationship) are blue. The gods I did this with are Nephthys (because she’s his wife but it doesn’t seem like their marriage is that happy), Nut (because she’s his mother and the epithet “son of Nut” is used for him a lot), and Horus and Osiris (because I read somewhere that Horus is sometimes portrayed as working with Set, but that Osiris and Set are always portrayed as enemies, and I wanted to see if that was true or not). In the Greek Magical Papyri this also includes Helios because he was sometimes synchronized with Horus. So when gods other than those gods don’t have red parts on their bars, that doesn’t mean the text didn’t imply they don’t like Set, it just means I wasn’t counting it, but if a deity like Nephthys has an entirely blue bar that means there weren’t any negative references.

My copy of the Calendar of Lucky and Unlucky days is weird, in that a lot of the mentions of Set sound a lot more like they should be about Apophis. I can’t tell if that’s some weirdness with the text, since it’s supposed to be from the New Kingdom which I’m pretty sure is before a lot of Apophis’s traits started carrying over to Set, or if it’s some weirdness with this translation and they translated everything about Apophis as being about Set for some reason, or if it isn’t actually weird at all and I’m just thinking of this wrong. Like, there’s a part in it where it calls Set the son of Nun, and I can’t tell if that’s a misprint of Nut’s name, or if Set actually was sometimes called the son of Nun and I just don’t know that, or if that’s actually not Set at all and just Apophis committing identity theft.

Fun individual things I found while doing this: In the Pyramid Texts there’s a spell that implies Set drank Osiris’s blood, a spell in the Greek Magical Papyri has Nephthys show up riding a donkey, which I think is really cool, and a spell that’s in the Coffin Texts and the Book of the Dead says Horus and Set kissed on New Year’s Day one time. Also there’s a Coffin Texts spell that says Horus gained Set’s strength and used it even more than his own, which is the only reference I’ve seen to the events of the Kahun fragment so far outside of the actual Kahun fragment.

The Greek Magical Papyri has a lot of references to elements of Christian or Jewish religious elements alongside Ancient Greek and Egyptian religious elements, and it brings me great sadness they never showed up with Set because it would have been absolutely hilarious to get to put “Gabriel (the angel)” or “Jewish/Christian G-d” on my Set chart.

Doing this was really fun so I think I might do another god soon. Probably Anubis because he almost never shows up in any myths and I’ve heard a thousand different versions of who his parents are supposed to be.

Currently Reading: Okay like six things at once technically but the main ones are: The Hobbit because that's what my students are doing for summer reading and I gotta rework my lesson, The Lost Tales of Sir Galahad because my brother let me borrow his copy, and I'm still stuck in House of Leaves because I refuse to let that book defeat me but I need so many more spoons to get through it.

Last Series: I caved and watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to talk about it with my mom which was fun but also like watching the television equivalent of like...frosting? Like it was very easy to consume and an enjoyable enough show so it makes sense why it got five seasons but it was definitely...kind of lackluster at times. (Basically on the other end of the spectrum for how well it handles queer identity in its story from A League of their Own the series which I watched before it and LOVED).

Last Movie: Barbie!!! I wept. My friend wept. I laughed at odd moments. I now own a Barbie drink floaty that looks like a mermaid tail and blew it up with my friend while the previews played. Please for your own good go watch Barbie. Greta Gerwig should be given all other little girl intellectual properties she's crushing ME with them.

Currently Working On: In place of the grad school application I've been failing to write for two months I now have two fics in the works.

A still title-less Nimona fic that's a 5 + 1 of post-canon for five times Nimona turns into Ballister and Ambrosius doesn't realize until it's too late and the one time he knows the whole time (it's turned into a large Ambrosius character study of course so we haven't even hit the five and one scenarios).

And God Loves You, but Not Enough to Save You which I have been writing nonstop for two days (including this morning when I got up to take my dog out and it refused to let me go back to sleep).

There is no "last video game" option but if you are looking for something to eat your brain go buy/play Scarlet Hollow! Please!! You need to talk about this with me!! A visual novel with dating amidst the terrors, phenomenal horror writing/illustrations, a crazy good mystery, and characters like Tabitha!! Well, at this particular moment I'm sitting in my evil gay bed getting late for my evil gay walk, but generally I'm trying to rewrite my fanfic that I've abandoned a huge time ago... I really really want to finish flame of hope bc this story is VERY important to me and I want it to be told but... writing is hard sometimes and there's school and my iron deficiency....... i am cringe (also not free)

I'm not sure I should share some of my new work right now bc I'm afraid that if I promise something to my readers again I'll fail again, so I'm trying to write just for process' sake. Besides flame of hope I'd like to post something abt Morfonica again, but I'm not quite sure what exactly... Well, we'll see if I can do something nice for the fandom again <3
