top 5 musicals?
oh OH I LOVE THIS ASK THANK YOU, CHAOS!!
Okay so, from lowest to highest, so far, my favorite musicals are:
5. Tick, Tick, Boom!
Especially as an artist, I absolutely LOVED this film. It's like a love letter to all artists. Of course non-artists can love and relate to this musical, but there's just something special it has for artists specifically. Plus the CINEMATOGRAPHY?? the PERFORMANCES?? ANDREW GARFIELD???? THE SONGS???? UGH. PHENOMENAL
Tumblr media
4. Hamilton: An American Musical
This is the only musical I've ever been blessed enough to actually see LIVE! And it was literally one of the greatest experiences of my life and made my desire to see musicals live EVEN MORE PAINFUL. BECAUSE THIS WAS WHAT I WAS MISSING OUT ON!! But yeah even if it's not at the top of this list I clearly still love this musical so much. This was one of my most powerful and longest-lasting hyper-fixations ever, and also the musical that actually really got me into writing fanfiction! So on top of the amazing music (my go to hip-hop and rap songs fr LOLLL most of my rapping ability comes from singing and rapping Hamilton with my siblings and cousins), performances, themes of LEGACY and FORGIVENESS??? AUGGHHH, i am also really grateful to it for awakening the writer in me.
Tumblr media
3. Les Miserables
I remember when I first started listening to this I was like. How is there not a single MEH song in this musical??? It was literally banger after banger after banger LIKE BRUH. I also remember when I finally finished listening to the musical, it was when my family and I lined up all night for some basketball tickets. And I finished listening to the musical when I woke up really early in the morning for my turn in waiting in line, and I was screaming at myself not to cry because I was literally surrounded by people. But anyway yeah I love this musical so much and while it's not as deeply personal as Hamilton (at least not yet), I think it definitely belongs in this spot. Listen specifically the THEMES AND MOTIFS ARE WHAT MAKE ME SO FERAL OVER THIS. BUT ESPECIALLY THE THEME OF FAITH??? BYE I CANT HANDLE IT ASJDFHJLDAD
Tumblr media
2. Newsies
While I think Les Mis is probably a better musical in general, THIS one is very personal. This is the first broadway musical i ever listened to, the one that got me into theatre musicals for the first time. IT ALL BEGAN HERE. This was also the first pro-shot I ever watched!!! And absolutely LOVE the songs DEARLY to this very day and still jam out to them every time I hear them, plus I LOVE the story and find it to be very relevant to people my age in particular. It's just so FUN and with AN INCREDIBLE story and soundtrack and the PERFORMANCES and DANCING AUGHHH and i love it so much i cant put it into words so here have Jack flipping someone instead
Tumblr media
1. The Phantom of the Opera
I doubt ANYONE is surprised by this being at the top LOL. But for real, this musical just HIT THE SPOT. I don't know how or why BUT I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS MUSICAL SO FAST AND HARD and I can't explain it. But just--the MUSIC the STAGING the STORY the CHARACTERS?? HELLO?? ERIK IS LITERALLY ONE OF THE MOST WELL-WRITTEN CHARACTERS I'VE EVER SEEN IN A LONG WHILE. AND CHRISTINE MY BELOVED. and OBVIOUSLY . RAOUL . HAS MY ENTIRE ENTIRE HEART THIS IDIOT BOYYYY. and and RAOULSTINE??? UGHHH. And i love all the supporting characters too like they're so FUN lol. and anyway of course the SONGS ARE JUST INCREDIBLE, WHAT ON EARTH. And of course, most importantly THE THEMES AND MOTIFS. LOVE AND LUST AND OBSESSION AND UNCONDITIONAL VS CONDITIONAL LOVE AND RECKLESS BRAVERY AND AND AND GRACE????? AND KINDNESS??? HOO MY HEART BE STILL

Random Album Review Week 3: American Idiot - Green Day (2004)
Tumblr media
Green Day is a band that I've always been kind of a hater of, for no specific reason. I don't know what exactly turned me against them, but I've always hated them, in a sort of unserious-but-still-serious way. When this album came up for me to review, I was dreading it a bit. Honestly, I think given all of the Green Day albums, this is the best possible one to start off with. American Idiot: The bands 7th studio album, and one of the strongest. The album is also a concept album, and I am a SUCKER for concept albums. When I think of Green Day, this album, and its title song are what come to mind for me.
When I think of Green Day, I also think of how much I dislike them.
I really don't know what it is, I think a big part of it is the fact that some of their songs have been overplayed to DEATH. Especially songs on this album, like Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. I never had much of a foundation for disliking the band. Billie's vocals irk me sometimes, but after listening to this album I see how they fit their style really well. Anyway though, I was open to having my opinion changed by this album
And as evidenced by my rating of this album, it definitely changed my mind! This album is honestly, very good. I do have a few nitpicks about it, but I'd say there's more things about this album that I like than I dislike.
One thing about this album that made me actually a little excited to listen to it initially is the fact that its a concept album. I can not get enough of concept albums. Lyrical analysis, connecting the dots between songs, that shit is my passion. I love albums that tell a story, soooo much. This album is a concept album, though a decently loose one. I read a summary, and a few theories about the albums story online, but unfortunately just didn't have the time this week to dig into the lyrics and weave together a story myself. It might be an album I'll come back to though, and dig further into.
This album also at times feels like a musical. Part of that is the concept album-ness of it all, but I think another part is its very grand, and arena-filling sound. This album sounds BIG. The guitars are booming, the drums are fucking pounding, its just sounds huge.
However, at times I think it sounds a little overproduced. I like Green Day a little better when they sound a little more truly punk, and a little looser in the production. This album's vocals also sound a little too tuned to me. Sometimes they don't sound very, human if that makes sense. Not that like, a robot or something is singing them, but like they sound very produced.
Though I didn't have much time to delve into the concept and story of this album, the lyrical themes made themselves extremely apparent as I listened. They're politically charged, and speak of a distrust in American society, and what it is like to be a disillusioned teenager growing up in shitty, suburban American. It fucks, honestly. I absolutely love the tone of the lyrics, and the messages they send.
Overall, this album suprirsed me, a lot. I really didn't think I'd love it as much as I do. I think finally listening to Green Day in a situation that's not the radio, and listening to a full album, made me think better of the band.

it's so sad that eddie didn't make it until 2004 to see Green Day releasing American Idiot, because I really think he would love this album, and I also think that Jesus Of Suburbia would be his song
here are some parts of the song that reminds me of him...
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me
Tumblr media
Dearly beloved, are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying...
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded, or am I just overjoyed?
Nobody's perfect, and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse
Tumblr media
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I've walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time!

Help I'm getting an american idiot hyperfixation and I've realized that JoS is a trans allegory so that means JoS and whatsername are t4t... i wonder what implications that has on the rest of the album and specifically St. Jimmy and his role. Perhaps JoS is the "past female" part of the main character and St. Jimmy is the "current male" but JoS becomes a man himself and so doesn't need St. Jimmy anymore to represent his own masculinity... so that's how he abandons dearly beloved in track 2 only to meet whatsername and eventually abandon him/her in homecoming which is heavily based on track 2... sorry there's going to be a longer post on this coming soon and i needed to get my thoughts out

American Idiot by Green Day: Album Review
Tumblr media
(Not my gif)
Warning: I do swear in this occasionally
I’ve decided to begin my pop-punk album reviews with what I believe to be one of the most coveted in the genre: American Idiot. Yes, it’s cliché and yes it’s become pretty mainstream now which technically defies one of the most important values of the genre, keeping it underground. However, for me, and from what I have observed over the past few years, I think for a lot of other music lovers as well, Green Day was the first band I ever discovered on my own that was different from what my parents listened to or what was popular on the radio at the time. They were the band that started it all for me. After listening to this album for the first time, it was like I became addicted… so I listened to it again and again and again (and again). From Billie Joe Armstrong’s brilliant lyrics coupled with the catchy melodies, distorted guitars, and exceptional rhythm section (courtesy of Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool), Green Day has, in my opinion, some of the best rock songs ever written. This band has produced remarkable albums time and time again but American Idiot is their most popular and I think for good reason. Not only do all the songs deliver from a musical standpoint, but lyrically as well. The words are so beautifully written with equal parts grit, poetry, criticism, and love. The story of this concept album is gorgeously balanced between the struggles of young love and heartbreak and the onset of political unrest and a national rebellion in America during the early 2000s. All in all, it creates a wonderful aesthetic that any emo teen could bang their head to. I have a very personal connection to this band, and more specifically, this album. Green Day kick-started my love for the pop-punk genre as well as my exploration into many other types of music. They are the reason I started my own pop-punk band in high school and consequently became interested in audio engineering, production, and music business. Basically, I have Green Day to thank for my entire future in the music industry. For each song, I have shared my opinions on the music, lyrics, and my interpretation of how the song connects to the overall concept of the album. I also included a rating out of ten for each song.
These are my personal, subjective opinions on the album and the concepts of the story. I am in no way negatively criticizing or judging it. If anyone has any other opinions on American Idiot, please message me! I would love to discuss music with anyone interested. Also, please send me recommendations for any other albums you think I should review. Next, I think I will do an All Time Low album but I am always open to suggestions.
Also this ended up being super long, so sorry about that, I got very excited (and a little carried away) with sharing my thoughts on this fantastic album!
So, without further ado, here is my first album review: Green Day’s American Idiot (2004).
Track 1: American Idiot
7.5/10
Right off the bat, the title track of the album kicks it off with a bang (literally). There are so many reasons why this song is such an amazing album opener. The fast-paced, heavy rhythm and the loud, layered guitars create a groove that makes you want to get up and dance. It’s an attention grabber which is why it makes perfect sense to put it as track number one and also as the radio hit. However, I think the lyrics are the real factor as to why this song sucks you in and makes you want to listen more. It’s an anthem for rebellion; a message to the societal outsiders who want to destroy the system and create lasting change in their community. American Idiot sets the revolutionary tone that the rest of the tracks carry on throughout the album’s story.
Track 2: Jesus of Suburbia
9.5/10
This song is easily one of my favorites on the album. The music and lyrics are written so geniously and the transitions between each section are seamless and meaningful, as if they are scene changes within the plot of a film. In this song, we are introduced to the main protagonist in the concept album whose name matches the track name, Jesus of Suburbia. The whole song explores his struggles of living in a deadbeat town and wanting to get the fuck out, which is quite literally the epitome of punk rock. Each section of the song tackles certain themes such as mental health, poverty, boredom, love and hate, and of course, the strifes of living in suburbia. Armstrong’s word choices and rhyming schemes are very poetic and transparent. They embody “sex, drugs, and rock & roll” and express a “Fuck you!” kind of attitude to the world. In terms of musicality, this was probably a very difficult and tedious song to write as it is over nine minutes long and has multiple rhythm and key changes. Some of my favorite musical moments in the track are Tre Cool’s drum solos and the transition to the acoustic guitars in the “Dearly Beloved” section which is so unexpectedly beautiful to hear in the middle of a hard and heavy rock song. The ending of the track, both lyrically and musically, ties the entire song together so perfectly to create a remarkable, operatic finale. As the song ends, we follow the protagonist, Jesus of Suburbia, onto his next journey in the story as he finally leaves his hometown (like I’m sure a lot of us wanted to do as teenagers).
Track 3: Holiday
9/10
In my opinion, this track has some of the best melodies in the whole album. It is another great anthem song that inspires rebellion and action, continuing with this tone through the album. My favorite element of the track is Mike Dirnt’s bassline which creates a great groove and carries the whole vibe of the track. This song fires you up, mainly due to the fantastic call and response elements that carry on throughout the whole track and peak during the bridge. This is a great moment in the song with the fun drum breakdown and audience participation. It sparks a revolutionary attitude within the listeners and once again serves as a way to unify people under a common cause. Unfortunately, this song is still just as relevant in today’s political climate as it was in 2003 when the song was written. A fitting line that comes to mind is “I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies”.
Track 4: Boulevard of Broken Dreams
8.5/10
As Holiday transitions into the fourth song in the album, the listener gets the sense that not only the musical tone of the album is changing but so is the plot of the story. We seamlessly go from a very inspiring and angry sound in Holiday to a desperate and lost sound in Boulevard of Broken Dreams. The Jesus of Suburbia doesn’t know who he is and consequently feels lost and alone. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is widely viewed as an “emo anthem” due to the depressing lyrics and message. But I think the musical elements of the song speak just as loudly as the lyrics do in order to convey this. The entire song itself is set to a minor key which automatically brings the mood down. This mood is emphasized even more by the slow heavy feeling that the guitars and cymbals contribute to the overall vibe. The wah guitar sound during the verses creates the feeling of disorientation for the protagonist as he transitions into a new, unknown part of his life and the harmonies in the choruses convey a helpless, agonizing feeling. To top it all off, the ending instrumental part ties all these elements together to hone in on that desperation that is supposed to be felt throughout the whole song by emphasizing the screaming, soloed guitar, and the disorienting, washy guitars in the background.
Track 5: Are We the Waiting
7/10
This is a very transitional track of the album. There isn’t anything groundbreaking going on here. It lets you take a breath and stand still for a second in the story. The Jesus of Suburbia is still lost in the unknown world of a new city but now, he has accepted his loneliness. The desperation of Boulevard of Broken Dreams has shattered and been replaced by a dreamlike veil while the protagonist searches for something, he just doesn’t know what it is. The calming drones in the song represent the stillness of the environment the character has found himself in. The song conveys a loss of hope and that even though the Jesus of Suburbia has burned the bridges of his hometown and forgotten about the burdens of his past, he still has an unguided, foggy future.
Track 6: St. Jimmy
9/10
As we transition very abruptly from Are We the Waiting to St. Jimmy, that dreamlike veil of hopelessness is lifted and the Jesus of Suburbia has finally found the thing he was searching for: a new beginning. This is one of my favorite songs on the album due to two factors. The first of course is the fast-paced, truly “punky” sound of the song. The rigorous drums and aggressive guitars are so much fun to rock out to and they also contribute to the gritty, raw personality of the character the song is based on. The second factor is exactly that, the St. Jimmy persona itself. St. Jimmy could be interpreted in one of two ways. He could either be seen as a new part of the Jesus of Suburbia’s personality or in other words the person he becomes when he starts his new life in the city. Or he could be seen as a separate entity altogether; a character the protagonist meets within the story. Either way, the effect of St. Jimmy on the Jesus of Suburbia is the same. St. Jimmy represents everything the Jesus of Suburbia wants to become in order to completely wash away his past self. The total disregard for rules and conformity that St. Jimmy symbolizes corrupts the Jesus of Suburbia and changes him.
Track 7: Give Me Novocaine
8/10
The seventh track of the album, Give Me Novocaine, bears a lot of resemblance to Are We the Waiting, in my opinion, due to the purpose of the song as well as the message behind it. The Jesus of Suburbia once again feels lost because the person he has become under St. Jimmy’s influence isn’t someone he recognizes to be himself. Maybe the novocaine depicted in the song is supposed to represent the Jesus of Suburbia coping with drug addiction as a result of the corruption caused by St. Jimmy. The same desperation that is felt in Boulevard of Broken Dreams can be felt in this track as well. However, the tone and musicality of this song isn’t something we have encountered yet within the album. During the verses, the dueling acoustic rhythm guitars hard-panned left and right create a very sweet sounding groove that isn’t unlike a cliché love song. But when the chorus hits, the cry for help from the protagonist and the juxtaposition between the lyrics and the melody are much more obvious.
Track 8: She’s a Rebel
7/10
She’s a Rebel isn’t one of my favorite songs on the album because it’s nothing that we haven’t heard so far musically. However, it does introduce an important character into the story. Whatsername is the love interest of the Jesus of Suburbia. She is described as a rebellious, independent woman who will be a vital “vigilante” in the revolution. The essence of the character is rooted in the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype that many female love interests are depicted as in literature and film. Her sole function is to help develop the character arch of the protagonist a.k.a the man who falls in love with her. Ultimately these roles end up being slightly two-dimensional as the only true reason she is included in the story is to help get the protagonist from point A to point B without actually developing her character at all. Personally, I would love to hear about Whatsername’s journey, separated from the Jesus of Suburbia’s.
Track 9: Extraordinary Girl
6.5/10
This is my least favorite song on the album. I don’t really like the melodic or musical aspects of the song. Once again I feel like it isn’t anything we haven’t heard so far and it doesn’t strike me as being new. But the song is a vital plot point in the album because it develops the ups and downs of the love story between the Jesus of Suburbia and Whatsername. It is obvious that they are both very troubled human beings and they are dependent on each other to give themselves worth. However, having this type of relationship can be exhausting and emotionally taxing on both participants, and as denoted in the lyrics “it’s not worth trying” to continue with it, even if the two are truly in love. On the surface level, the lyrics seem very cliché and this was always one of the reasons I didn’t like this track as much as some of the others on the album. But after analyzing the lyrics a little more, it’s obvious that the song is much deeper than it is first made out to be.
Track 10: Letterbomb
10/10
If I was going to pick a favorite song from the album, it would be Letterbomb. When I was younger, I never appreciated this song and the poetry within its lyrics. However, over time I have realized how brilliant this track truly is in summarizing the whole story of the Jesus of Suburbia and representing the climax of his story. The whole song is basically the protagonist’s revelation of  how much of a shit show his life has become. He thought he was miserable living in the boredom of his hometown so he left for the big city. But the universe is one big cosmic joke and in this case, the punchline is that the amazing life he built up in his head was nothing like the reality and hardships of the drugs, corruption, and heartbreak he actually experienced. This is the embodiment of “the grass is always greener on the other side” type of outlook on life. Letterbomb perfectly sums up the pitfalls of romanticization. Inevitably, there will always be some disappointment when experiencing the reality of a life you thought you wanted in your head. The Jesus of Suburbia must deal with this disappointment head-on and because of it, he decides to abandon his newfound life in the city and subsequently his relationship with Whatsername. Ultimately, this whole story is about a young man trying to cope with the current political climate of the country while also dealing with personal issues that stem from his childhood, like the treatment he received from his parents growing up and their divorce. In order to cope with these hardships, he created the heroic Jesus of Suburbia persona for himself and built this whole new life around that character. By far one of my favorite lines in this entire album is “You’re not the Jesus of Suburbia, The St. Jimmy is a figment of your father’s rage and your mother’s love, Made me the idiot America”. This is such an amazing way to tie in all the aspects of the protagonist’s story and tear down this image in his head that he created his life around. He isn’t the Jesus of Suburbia, he’s just another American Idiot who thought he could escape the confines of the life he didn’t want.
Track 11: Homecoming
8/10
I can’t think of any other song that is more perfect to conclude the album than Homecoming. The grandiose ending of the song is almost theatrical as the Jesus of Suburbia decides to return home after his long journey on his own in the big city. Musically, the entire song leading up to the ending is so much fun for the listener, especially when Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool contribute their own singing abilities towards the end. The fact that the band wrote and recorded not one but two songs that both exceeded nine minutes and included multiple sections throughout the whole track is incredible. It is an even greater feat to succeed in making these songs fun and exciting to listen to for the entire duration of both of them. The lyric “This life like dream ain’t for me” perfectly sums up and reemphasizes the points that were developed in Letterbomb. The Jesus of Suburbia is done with the harsh reality of the dream life he created in his head and just wants to go home.
Track 12: Whatsername
9/10
Even though Homecoming concludes the actual story of the protagonist, Whatsername is the true ending to the album. All in all, the American Idiot concept album is very bittersweet. The protagonist discovers a lot about who he is and in the end, after making many mistakes, returns home and gains a new appreciation for his life. However, the story is also conceived with heartbreak and sadness, the relationship between the protagonist and Whatsername being the focal point of those themes and ultimately ending with an inconclusive, melancholy break. The song itself has a very catchy melody throughout. The first half of the track is very lowkey and calming. The slight reverb of the vocals and the haunting guitar riff creates a feeling of nostalgia and a wonderstruck sensation. It is as if the Jesus of Suburbia is reflecting on his relationship with Whatsername after years and years. In fact, the reason that Whatsername doesn’t have a name at all could be because the entire album is told by the protagonist looking back on his journey from many years in the future. Either way, this concept album is a beautiful one that creates a multilayered, musical story that I think many people can relate to in one way or another.
If you got to the end (I know it was super long), thank you so much for giving this a read! I hope you enjoyed it in some way. Once again, if you agree with me on certain points or you have different opinions, message me so we can have a fun chat!

Reginia “Dearly beloved we’ve gathered here to celebrate the union between this man and this woman. Regina turns to Liam “King Liam do you take this woman to be your lawful wedded wife?”
“I do”
“And do you Lady MC take this man to be your lawful wedded husband”
“I do”
“By the power invested in me by the kingdom of Cordonia I pronounced you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride”
Liam lifts up her veil and cups her cheek with both hands. He kisses her deeply and her arm wrap around him. He pulls back “I love you my queen”
“I love you too my king”
****
“Mommy! Can I hold the babies?”
MC smiles “Grace just be careful”
“I will” MC hands her one of the twins. MC gave birth to twin baby girls they named Bella and Miranda “She’s so cute mommy”
“Just like you were when you were a baby”
Liam steps into the room and Grace waves “Hi daddy!”
“Hi sweetie” He kisses her on the forehead he looks down at the twins “And how are my little princesses today?”
“They’re all good”
“I’m glad” Liam smiles “I love our little family”
“And I love you Liam”
“I love you more” He kisses her deeply
“You guys are gross”

#FridayFive: Jesus of Suburbia
#FridayFive: Jesus of Suburbia
The five-movement track Jesus of Suburbia / City of the Damned / I Don’t Care / Dearly Beloved / Tales of Another Broken Home is one of my favorite pieces of music ever recorded. The entire American Idiotalbum is phenomenal, and was the driving soundtrack for me from when it was released in late September of 2004 through at least the next eighteen months. I still listen to it fairly often and…

Hello! I'm an alto and my school is doing Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson soon. What songs would you recommend for the audition if I'm going for ensemble/soloist? (Like the girls in The Corrupt Bargain, Ten Little Indians)
I’d suggest Hide & Seek or Etch A Sketch from Gone Missing, Something from Fortress of Solitude, 21 Guns, Dearly Beloved, or Letterbomb from American Idiot, Lifesong or Living Dead from Jasper in Deadland, and What If I Like It or Beautiful from Pretty Filthy.

Seventeen as American Idiot lyrics

Joshua: “Tell me, Jimmy, I won’t feel a thing.”
Jun: “I started fucking running as soon as my feet touched the ground. We back in the barrio but to you and me, that’s Jingletown.”
Hoshi: “He lacks the courage in his mind like a child left behind, like a pet left in the rain.”
Wonwoo: “I read the graffiti in the bathroom stall like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall and so it seemed to confess. It didn't say much but it only confirmed that the center of the earth is the end of the world. And I could really care less.”
Jihoon: “I'm the patron saint of the denial with an angel face and a taste for suicidal.”
DK: “What the hell's your name? What's your pleasure and what is your pain? Do you dream too much? Do you think what you need is a crutch?”
Mingyu: “The rage and love, the story of my life. The Jesus of Suburbia is a lie.”
Minghao: “And in the darkest night, if my memory serves me right, I'll never turn back time. Forgetting you, but not the time.”
Seungkwan: “And I leave behind this hurricane of fucking lies. And I walked this line a million and one fucking times. But not this time.”
Vernon: “No one’s ever died for my sins in hell, far as I can tell, least the ones I’ve gotten away with.”
Dino: “It's not over 'til you're underground. It's not over before it's too late. This city's burning. It's not my burden. It's not over before it's too late.”

AYayy! Thank youuuu!!
From the Showtunes Ask tag
2. Name five songs from musicals you find underrated.
Ok! First three are (even though i all of them could’ve been) from “The Scarlet Pimpernel” which are
 1. Madame Guillotine (track 2 on the OBC soundtrack I love this song, it’s on my “get ready” playlist just cus it makes me feel badass as heck)2. Vivez (Track 4. This whole song is fantastic, it never fails to put me in a good mood)3. Storybook (Track 19. It was a hard choice between this and The riddle [track 14 so good omg] but at the end of the day this was the first song I listened to from this musical and I fell in love immediately. If I get married I want this song to be our first dance, or at least played at the wedding)
The last two are from American Idiot. K now hear me out, I know lots of people love this musical and it’s won two tonys but as someone who found the musical through Green Day themselves I don’t think people appreciate how different the sound is to the original. And sure there was already a story there but damn if they don’t make you relate to practically everyone in the dam show. It’s just so goooooooooood. So I highly recommend checking out both the original and the musical versions of the next two songs.
4. Jesus of Suburbia I. Jesus of Suburbia / II. City of the damned / III. I don’t care / IV. Dearly beloved / V tales of another broken home (Track 2 on the OBC soundtrack. I know I know, a long ass title for a long ass song but it’s the most story driven number in the show and the way the divided the parts to different characters really helps you get to know them quickly)5. Letterbomb (Track 18. Ok so this one just sounds great. It’s my go to angry song and honestly I really like The musical version a lot better to Green Day’s. I love Green Day and BJA’s voice is also freaking great but I think even he said they wrote it from the perspective of a female. Listen It’s just a really powerful song holy shit.)
7. Name five songs from musicals that you can't stand.
Crap this is a hard one. I don’t really have any musicals I can’t stand?? I’ve yet to stumble upon one that really grinds my gears... Crap wait... Maybe Anastasia? I mean The music is great but the pacing was kind of frustrating for me? I guess I’ll just name the first 5 songs from Anastasia that come to mind?
1. Journey to the past (i love this song tho)
2. Paris holds the key
3. A nightmare
4.  A rumor is St. Petersberg
Last but not least of course
5. Once upon a December
Thank you again @dramatic-irony!! Sorry I rambled so much I’m sure you didn’t expect something so long!

DAY 11: A song you never get tired of.
“Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day”
Dearly beloved, are you listening? I can’t remember a word that you were saying Are we demented, or am I disturbed? The space that’s in between insane and insecure
Oh, therapy can you please fill the void? Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed? Nobody’s perfect and I stand accused For lack of a better word, and that’s my best excuse

Wish Upon You
Fandom: Haikyuu!!
Pairing: Akaashi Keiji/Bokuto Koutaro
Genre: Assasination AU, Angst, but not so angst because i don’t want my babies to suffer, much
Status: chapter 1/?
Read it on AO3
Bokuto closed his eyes as he listened to the white noises around him. Rushes footsteps. Buzzing conversations. Dragged wheeled luggage.
Airport is a place where you can find almost all emotions, like the anxious feeling in your gut when you were about to go to foreign place for the first time but also excited for the awaiting journey, the agitated and hopeful feeling as you waited for the loved one to come home, the anguish and determination to prove that leaving was the right choices, the warm adoration as you imagined a lovely vacation with your significant other, or the crushing sorrow in your heart as you said goodbye to that someone you loved so dearly you felt like you left a part of your soul behind. Worse was when you realized you would never see them again.
“Bokuto-san.”
Bokuto opened his eyes and looked up. Akaashi stood in front of him. Tall and graceful, with steady sharp, green eyes that took Bokuto’s breath away, every time without a fail, even after two years they’d known each other. Bokuto smiled fondly, noting the tired lines around those eyes and a slight frown of his eyebrows. By now, he could tell even the slightest glimpse of the other boy emotion behind the ever-present poker face. The little furrow on the corner of his eyebrows when he’s trying to figure something out, the taut line of his jaw when he’s upset, the faint tinge of red hidden behind his ears and the back of his neck when he’s flustered or embarrassed. Bokuto yearned to see more of those, to hear more of Akaashi’s genuine thought among the sarcastic remarks and dry humors.
It terrified him, as he realized, how he would trade anything just so he could stay for a little longer. Be with him just a bit more. He wished, as he gazed into Akaashi’s eyes, he could change who he really was.
“Bokuto-san,” Akaashi’s furrows deepened, “are you alright?”
“Yeah,” Bokuto cleared his throat, “I’m fine ‘Kaashi.”
“C’mon, the others are waiting.”
‘The others’ were Fukurodani volleyball regular members and their managers. They had thrown a farewell party the day before with all Fukurodani volleyball team members and some of Bokuto’s classmates and friends, so now the regular members were just the representative to bid him goodbye at the airport.
Oh, and there were Kuroo and Kenma as well, just because.
Kuroo waved as Bokuto and Akaashi approached them. The Cheshire cat grin plastered on his face. “Thought I missed seeing you off, dude.”
“Won’t dare dream of it, bro.” Bokuto hugged him and patted his back.
Kuroo retaliated by smacking his back harder. Bokuto smacked him back even harder. And it turned into a full back-smack competition with them still hugging. Some people who passed by stared at them with confused expression, some snickered, and most just pretended they didn’t see it, much like the other Fukurodani members. Konoha groaned. Bokuto could hear Akaashi sighing behind him and Kenma muttering idiots under his breath.
“So,” Bokuto exclaimed when he finally disentangled himself from Kuroo, “before I go, is there anything you guys want to tell me? Some sentimental goodbye speeches for your awesome and beloved former captain?”
“Bokuto,” Shirofuku, their manager, said.
Bokuto turned to her, eyes expectant.
“You never give me back the money I lent you.”
“Ahh,” he grimaced. “How about I’ll send you pictures of every hot foreign guys I’ll meet later? Blond? Blue eyes? I’ll introduce them to you.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
“How about I bash your head until your brain can finally start working properly?” she scowled. “Honestly, how did you even got scholarship overseas is beyond me.”
“Well, you can send the pictures for me,” Komi shrugged. At the blank look of his friends, he added quickly, “not of guys! I want pictures of hot girls!”
When the others were bickering about girls (“Japanese or American?” “I prefer Asian girls, they are small and easy to hug” “What do you know? The only woman you’ve ever hug is your mom” “HEY! I hugged my grandma too!”) Kenma tugged Bokuto’s sleeve.
“Shoyo says goodbye.” He thrust his phone screen towards Bokuto’s face. Good luck wishes and many emojis sprinkled all over it. And there was picture of Karasuno volleyball team members grinning at him, some thumbing up, some pointing gun fingers, some doing peace sign, some waving, and Tsukki at the back... just standing. Ahh, the loveliest, most expressive child of Karasuno. Bless his soul.
“Bo, it’s time,” Kuroo called.
Bokuto checked his watch then gathered his team into group hug. He patted their shoulders and told them how much he would miss them. And he realized he really meant it. He would miss them.
He fist bumped Kuroo and ruffled Kenma’s hair (“Did you juST HISS???” Kuroo guffawed “Bite him, Kenma”).
Then he turned to Akaashi.
He was staring at him. Green eyes locked into Bokuto’s golden ones. Bokuto loved those eyes. Eyes that had looked down at him softly as he laid his head on the younger boy’s lap. Eyes that had looked at him exasperatedly when he did something stupid. Eyes that had looked at him with disappointed frown when he said he gave up. I believe in you, Bokuto-san, you are more than this, you can do it. Eyes that had looked at him with warm contentment. I’m so proud of you, Koutaro. Eyes that he had kissed so lightly as stream of tears flowing down from them that one time they watched Hachiko.
Bokuto stepped forward, getting rid of distance between them, and pulled Akaashi into his arms. He felt Akaashi’s hands wrapped around his waist, head rested on Bokuto’s shoulder. He was shaking slightly. Or maybe it was Bokuto.
Bokuto turned his head into Akaashi’s neck and breathed him in. As he closed his eyes, he could hear white noises around him. Rushes footsteps. Buzzing conversations. Dragged wheeled luggage. The world kept on going, no matter how many times he wished -begged- it would just stop.
It terrified him how he would trade anything so he could be with the boy in his arms for a bit longer. How he wished he could change who he really was.
But he knew he couldn’t.
And so, he had to let him go.
“It’s not a goodbye,” Akaashi whispered.
Bokuto pushed him into an arm-length gently, reluctantly. He brushed his fingers on Akaashi’s cheek, down to his jaw and to his chin, mapping the lines and curves of his face.
“It’s not a goodbye,” Akaashi repeated. This time more quiet. Like something he was trying to convince to himself. “Say something,” Akaashi gazed upward, “Aren’t you supposed to be the loud one?”
I love you. Bokuto thought. But he didn’t say it. He never said it. They never talked about their feelings. But then again, they never had to, because they both just knew.
Bokuto smiled at him sadly. Slowly, he cupped Akaashi’s cheeks and kissed his forehead.
“Goodbye Keiji.”
+++
Once he went through the checkpoint, Bokuto made a beeline to the restroom. He got into one of the empty stall and took his jacket and shirt off.
He rummaged his bag and pulled out a temporary black hairspray and a mirror. There was a giant mirror right across the stall but he couldn’t take a risk of someone might see him, so he brought his own.
He carefully sprayed the hairspray until all of his hair turned black. He doubled check the back of his head until he fully sure it was all cover.
Then he pulled out a dark navy polo shirt and black Aviator from his bag and put them on.
He extracted a small satchel from the inside of his bag. All of his ID, phone, and anything that could be traced back to him were already in the satchel.
The jacket, shirt, hairspray and the mirror was stuffed back into the bag. After he zipped it, he stashed it on the corner, not fully hidden so it would just look like someone forgot to take it.
His phone rang. Private number displayed on the screen. He picked it up.
“You ready?” came familiar voice from the other end.
“Yes,” Bokuto answered curtly.
“Target is in the nest. You got three hours to finish it.”
“Yes.”
“Good luck.”
“Hey,” Bokuto rasped, “if anything happen to me,” he inhaled slowly, “I want you to do one more thing.”
“Spill it.”
“Promise me you will protect him.”
“I will.”
Bokuto cut off the line. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, steadying his heart. Then he slung the satchel across his chest and went out of the restroom.
He didn’t go to his gate though. He headed straight to the exit door.

American Idiot, deconstructed
Green day has always been a punk band, in 2000 they came up with album name warning which was a complete disaster and everyone felt that they have lost their edge, they decided to go the studio and try something new. Over the next five months they put their hearts out to try something new, experimented with different sounds and came out with 20 demos. Unfortunately for green day they were stolen short thereafter.
Then they decided to write from the scratch, and it’s probably good they did because in 2004 they came up with a new album which is one of best alternative rock album of all time name American Idiot (at least from my point of view).
Set against the backdrop of George Bush era America, American idiot is a concept album that tells the coming of age story of a suburban teenager, known as Jesus of suburbia. Through the eyes of the character Jesus of suburbia green day comment on the state of America as they saw it at that time. The opening track of the album is the one of the most political songs of the album, it’s green day take on the modern America, they see American people fooled by the media over saturation and mass media painting a picture with failed visions of future that are impossible to live up to, often leaving people to feel empty and like they failed.
Welcome to a new kind of tension All across the alien nation Where everything isn't meant to be okay Television dreams of tomorrow We're not the ones who're meant to follow For that's enough to argue                                                                          (American Idiot)
The whole media obsessed America is the background of the story where the lead character Jesus of suburbia get introduce in second song of the album name “Jesus of suburbia “ itself. Rage and love are the two theme of this song, in green day’s point of view the American society is in an internal struggle between rage and love, where Jesus of suburbia is living in. This has been seen at the album’s iconography as well. Turning a picture of heart into a grenade, and putting the fist around it.
The two theme rage and love is seen sprawling throughout the whole song Jesus of suburbia. The opening section of the song shows us our main characters biography and how he has been moulded by a world full of apathy and contradiction.
I'm the son of rage and love The Jesus of Suburbia The bible of none of the above On a steady diet of Soda Pop and Ritalin No one ever died for my Sins in hell As far as I can tell At least the ones that I got away with                                                         (Jesus of suberbia)
In the next section ‘city of damn’ of Jesus of suburbia, we are introduce to his hometown painted as a wasteland where he begins his desperate search for meaning.
City of the dead At the end of another lost highway Signs misleading to nowhere City of the damned Lost children with dirty faces today No one really seems to care                                                                       (Jesus of suberbia)
Unable to find any meaning from the American society, the Jesus of suburbia begins to preach apathy and gain followers who shares his life experience or the one’s who are feeling same as him.
Everyone's so full of shit Born and raised by hypocrites Hearts recycled but never saved From the cradle to the grave We are the kids of war and peace From Anaheim to the Middle East We are the stories and disciples of The Jesus of suburbia                                                                                 (Jesus of suberbia)
In this two sections, we experience the conflict once more with a rage fill ‘I don’t care’ followed by love of ‘Dearly beloved’.
Dearly beloved are you listening? I can't remember a word that you were saying Are we demented or am I disturbed? The space that's in between insane and insecure                                       (Jesus of suberbia)
In the final section of this song, Jesus of suburbia sets out to leave behind the suburbs that has left him in this drained state. The song finishes with him leaving his home.
And I leave behind This hurricane of fucking lies I lost my faith to this This town that don't exist So I run, I run away To the lights of masochists                                                                         (Jesus of suberbia)
This move us to the third track of the album ‘Holiday’, where it is shown Jesus first few days away from home, and he feeling like he is on holiday at the dawn of his life with the rest of the world ahead of him. At the chores of this song lies another criticism of George bush’s America, particularly the war in Iraq.
Zieg heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel Towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the faggots that don't agree
Trials by fire setting fire
It’s not the way meant for me                                                                               (Holiday)
The next comes the gloomy ‘Boulevard of broken dreams’ which broke all the chart records even got to Billboard no. 1 pop list in United states. In this song Jesus of suburbia found himself struggling through depression as he feels alone walking through the streets of city he has run to. This loneliness bring us to the fifth track ‘Are we waiting’ which is then abruptly cut short by ‘St. Jimmy’. In his loneliness and reflection, the Jesus of suburbia transform his rage into a new identity name St. Jimmy. This change in his new identity also shows changes in his music as well, like from the melody of ‘Are we waiting’ to the types of punk rock ‘St. Jimmy’. This St. Jimmy character of Jesus is a typical revolutionary punk, urging Jesus to rage against world with violence.
Raised in the city under a halo of lights
The product of war and fear that we've been victimized I'm the patron saint of the denial With an angel face and a taste for suicidal                                                 (St. Jimmy)
Now in the seventh track ‘Give me Novocaine’, in this St. Jimmy encourages Jesus to turn drugs and self-destruction as an escape from the pain that the feeling. After his experience with drugs he meet a girl called Whatsername. Over the next two tracks ‘She’s a rebel’ and ‘Extraordinary girl’, Whatsername represents the love counterpoint to St. Jimmy’s rage. She and Jesus of suburbia share a brief relationship before breaking up. The tenth track ‘Letterbomb’ is the letter she sends to Jesus of Suburbia to breakup with him.
Nobody likes you Everyone left you They're all out without you Having fun                                                                                                          (Letterbomb)
This is where we come to climax of the album in ‘Homecoming’ another nine minute epic made of five parts. There is section in this track which marks the coming of age of the Jesus of suburbia, he realizes the rage that created St. Jimmy is the reason for his loss of love Whatsername, and so he kills of the St. Jimmy part of himself.
Jimmy died today He blew his brains into the bay In this state of mind, it's my own private suicide                                                 (Homecoming)
From here there is no triumphant finish, instead its melancholic and sad. Jesus grows up and gets a job pushing paper daydreaming of better times.
Jesus is filling out paperwork now At the facility on east 12th st He's not listening to a word now He's in his own world And he's daydreaming He'd rather be doing something else now                                                          (Homecoming)
In the part ‘Nobody likes you’ he is haunted by the letter that whatsername wrote him all those years ago. In the part ‘Rock and roll girlfriend’, he gets a letter from a friend still in the punk rock life and remembers what its like to live that.
I got a kid in New York I got a kid in the bay I haven't drank or smoked a thing In over twenty two days So get off my case, get off my case, off my case!                                              (Homecoming)
At the end of letter Jesus’s friend ask him to stop complaining. He’s happy with his Rock-and-Roll life and doesn’t want to hear Jesus’s sad story about the life that he left. In the end this helps him bring about the great revelation that Jesus of suburbia needs to take control of his life. He let St. Jimmy rage out and blame everyone else around him, without taking accountability for his own actions. With this revelation Jesus sets off from the city and heads home to the suburbs that birthed him.
Home We're coming home again Home We're coming home again Home We're coming home again Home We're coming home again                                                                                 (Homecoming)
In the final track of the album we get Jesus remembering Whatsername, the women that meant so much to him when he was younger, and now he can’t even remember her name.
I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away and then I took a different path I remember the face But I can't recall the name Now I wonder how whatsername has been                          (Whatsername)

American Shithole #11 — Scott Pruitt: Ambien From Oklahoma
By Eric Wilson
“I don’t want to write about these bloviating, Machiavellian fuckfaces this week!” I raged, as Monday morning slid unproductively into Monday afternoon. I nervously plucked at my guitar while watching the news cycle blitzkrieg on my monitor a few feet away — a now daily ritual.
Mostly, I love writing this column. Some days though…
Later, from underneath the covers, I howled the muffled words “I don’t want to write about these soul-sucking servants of the shitgibbon every seven days for seven more years!” as I buried myself under a mountain of pillows.
On Wednesday I cried, “I’m staring into the void!” as I fumbled around my closet looking for a comfortable pair of pants. There was no reply from the darkness within.
“You’re fine,” I finally thought to myself, “you’re just reading too much about that conniving motherfucker, Scott Pruitt.”
Ugh, Scott Pruitt — bane of the Environmental Protection Agency. I never would have imagined that someone could actually bore me to death. Is this how he's killing the environment? Is he boring it to death?
He is a slow internet connection personified.
I’ve read nearly 50 articles about the head of the EPA over the last few days, along with ingesting and digesting a fair amount of CNN coverage about the man — and I was uncharacteristically disinterested with all of it.
Even writers for the New Yorker and the New York Times were unable to capture my attention, as they, too, failed to bring color and life to a man will all the charm and allure of an abandoned Porta Potty.
It was the most painful slog so far, and I’ve already spent a week reading about Stephen Miller!
Never has there been a more boring villain in the Trump rogue’s gallery, than this litigious Jesus freak. Reading a bio piece on Scott Pruitt is like reading a 40-page white paper on the chemical properties of Vaseline.
I have been distracted this past week; I admit that could be part of it. A week dominated by the dangerous surgery my father was forced to undertake. (I love you, dad! Get well soon.)
But this Pruitt goon is just such an ordinary, run-of-the-mill bad guy that he can’t compete with the hyperbolic carnival barkers and legitimately terrifying shadow figures that have all come out of the woodwork. I fell asleep reading about him two nights in a row, and I’ve successfully read Moby Dick!
Okay, I haven’t. Fuck that tome. But you get the point.
In the age of comic supervillains, Pruitt comes off less like an evil genius, and more like a creepy office temp — the kind of guy that’s always looking at you when you happen to glance in their general direction.
Stop creeping on me Pruitt!
Conversely, if Pruitt were a superhero, you would find yourself constantly asking what his powers were. He’s just sort of, there. If the Trump administration were the Avengers, Pruitt would be Hawkeye.
I can just imagine eavesdropping on the conversations about Trump’s Avengers at Comic-Con:
“So what’s this Pruitt character do again?”
“He furthers the conservative agenda from within his department, he abuses housing, finance and travel privileges on the tax payer’s dime, and in general he behaves like a bought and paid for horse’s ass, born of the cronyism era of political yore.”
“So basically, he’s just a republican.”
“Yes. One that can skewer libruls with a nifty composite bow, and also turn invisible.”
“C’mon now, he can’t turn invisible, he’s just really, really boring.”
“Yes, but if his boringness results in what would effectively be invisibility, then that should be considered a power.”
“I disagree. That would be like saying…”
Ah, Comic-Con. How I long for your Nerdspeak. Someday I shall find you as crowded, overpriced and befouled by virgin body odor as I imagine you to be…
I managed to read enough about Pruitt — through caffeine-assisted focus — to understand that he is clearly another incompetent and grossly overconfident fool within this administration. They are all terrible fools, but some of them are so spectacularly inept in their villainy. Following the lead of Trump’s almost laughable bungling of everything he touches, I suppose.
What kind of fucking idiot disobeys this White House when they expressly forbid you to give lavish salary increases to friends in your department? What kind of numbskull defies this president by circumventing the law with an obscure loophole via the Safe Drinking Water Act to get two buddies roughly an extra 70K a year?
What kind of muttonhead lies about a private email account used for communications with his ties to the oil and gas industry, during the Senate confirmation hearings on his appointment to the EPA? – a crime itself.
What kind of fool perfectly positioned to dismantle Obama era EPA initiatives and regulations — something he’s worked years to accomplish — breaks the law by accepting the gift of cheap D.C. housing as quid pro quo for awarding a lucrative pipeline contract?
The boring, invisible kind of fool, apparently.
“So what’s his origin story?”
I’ll handle this, Comic-Con nerds.
Scott Pruitt is a lawyer (J.D.) and politician from Oklahoma, so his origin story is that he’s a good ol’ boy. I lived in Oklahoma for four miserable years in my youth, and if there’s a barren and lifeless place filled with more wingnuts and whackadoodles, I have not seen it.
I do not wish to ever visit such a place.
Here is a brief aside offering insight into the mindset of Oklahoma’s educational system. When I was in sixth grade in Oklahoma, they gave the incoming class various aptitude tests, and then separated the exceptionally high-scoring kids from the herd, to be educated elsewhere, along with the children exhibiting behavioral problems. I have always found it interesting that the troublemakers and the intellectually gifted were considered the same in that cultural backwater.
That was 40 years ago. I couldn’t possibly imagine what Oklahoma’s public schools have devolved into today. Oh wait, yes I can imagine, as the teachers for the entire state are on strike, due to the gross undervaluing of their services, among other indecencies and injustice.
Pruitt wasn’t formally educated in Oklahoma, he grew up in Kentucky, but you couldn’t possibly care about that, dear reader. I certainly didn’t. He moved to Tulsa in the early '90s, but no one really cares about that either. Or that he was a State Senator and then Oklahoma’s Attorney General. Zzzzzzz. Boring. He’s the Benadryl of Evil.
His whole life story is boring as shit.
I hope he gets fired so that at the very least, I never have to read about him again. Reading about this stone-faced conservative boor actually made me care less about the environment he so desperately wants to destroy; so please universe, no more Pruitt.
Unless I have insomnia, then get me that bio, pronto.
He is dangerous though, and he certainly seemed devious from the get-go. Not only did he spend several thousand dollars sweeping his new offices for bugs, he also built a super-spy silent phone booth in his office with 43K of tax payer funds.
I’ll save you all the usual links; trust me on this one, I did the fucking reading for you, and I am a less-interesting man for the effort.
There is a lot of conjecture over whether or not Pruitt is next on the chopping block. Opinions are all over the place on this one, so I’ll throw in my two cents. If he were from a family of billionaires, I would say no, he stays. This is one of the reasons DeVos will be around for a while. Pruitt is not from upper-crust wealth though. Trump ultimately sees the Pruitt types of the world as lesser, and therefore expendable; and considering the amount of bad press he’s generating for the administration, well, Trump has gotten rid of people for far less.
So, unless the heat dies down, its adios, you boring motherfucker!
Breaking News: Pruitt on the controversial pay raises for his staff: My staff did it, not me!
Here's Pruitt hammering nails into his own coffin Wednesday evening, and in an environment you would expect to be simpatico. This is a FOX News interview with Ed Henry, no less. My new prediction is he is gone by the time this posts Thursday.
B.S. Report
In case you missed it, another conservative talking head looked to belittle one of the Parkland survivors in the digital arena — this time it was Laura Ingraham gunning for David Hogg. She was outmatched. She came damn close to losing her show.
These assholes are dropping out of elections, losing advertisers — losing their jobs — every damn time they say some evil shit about these kids. THAT is power. That is their own beloved capitalism biting them in the fucking ass. Taking out a good chunk. How’d you like them apples, Laura Ingraham? I’d wager you shit your spanks when those advertisers started dropping like flies. I bet your knees were shaking like twigs in the breeze when the boys from the FOX News home office called to inform you if you still had a job.
So this goes out to all of the Fox News family, and their ilk.
Enjoy scrutinizing and fretting over every miserable fucking thing you used to be able to say with impunity — for the rest of your miserable lives — you overvalued, right-wing, shitgibbon-blowing, squawk-box media whores.
You sold out our country for ratings, and eventually America is going to make you pay for that, dearly.
