A couple shots from the day I went to see Lord of the Rings- A Musical Tale in Newbury! It was a very magical day. We hiked all day, made our dinner reservation at the Watermill and after the show walked back to our inn. It was an excellent There and Back Again adventure, to be sure.

Grimsbury Castle, Hermitage, Berkshire
On a hilltop near the village of Hermitage, a few miles from Newbury, are the remains of an early Iron Age hillfort which became known as Grimsbury Castle. Close by is a battlemented structure, also called Grimsbury Castle, but this one only pretends to antiquity, being a diminutive sham castle built to house a gamekeeper. Continue reading Untitled

Punjabi Virsa, Newbury
When you live in a small town like Newbury, word of mouth is the most powerful marketing tool you can have. In the case of Punjabi Virsa, people are talking. First off it was my tennis coach who’d booked a table at this new Indian place in the most random location along Hambridge Road opposite Newbury Racecourse. Tucked away between The London Apprentice and the Specialized and Banjo Cycles bike…

See the winners from Tadley’s cute cat photograph competition 2024, in support of Basingstoke Cats Protection
An annual cute cat photograph competition held in Tadley showcased the best-looking felines in the area, but there was only one purrfect winner. All the 86 entrants were displayed at the Basingstoke Cats Protection fair at Allen Ambrose Centre on March 16 and the public voted for their winner on the day. This year’s winning […]

The walls of our Twig are bedecked with large abstract paintings, large abstract canvas, and beautifully hanged 19th century antique urns, statues and sculpture. She loves garden and have good collection of garden antiques and pots are in abundance. Also now concentrate on selling antique furniture and furnishing an orangery.

More pubs (Berkshire now)
Pub 109 - King Charles Tavern (Newbury)
This pub is nominally a Greene King pub but seems to have a good range of beers. My pint of Hardy & Hanson bitter which was pretty nice. It seems a good local pub and definitely worthy of gbg-entry.
Pub 110 - The Lion (Newbury)
This pub was a former CAMRA pub of the year and was good, but not amazing. I had a pint of Black Sheep Bitter which was a long way from home.
Pub 111 - The Nags Head (Reading)
I wanted to visit this pub when I read about the huge beer selection. It is a superb pub with a really convivial atmosphere and an incredible beer selection. My pint (Shadow of Darkness) was incredible, such a lush beer.
Pub 112 - The Alehouse (Reading)
You sort of have to go here when in Reading. I have visited previously but that was a long time ago (when Palace were in the same division as Reading). It was good, definitely, and I'd love to have a pub like it in the middle of my town but maybe I'd been spoiled by the excellence of the Nags Head as this seemed a few rungs down from that.
