One of the earliest examples of Leo’s “I’ll do my own thing to accomplish our goal without discussing it with my team first” is in episode one. It’s super, super quick, and ultimately inconsequential, but it subtly sets up a great precedent that I think is very interesting.

When the boys need to grab the medallion from Splinter without Splinter noticing, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie huddle together with Raph taking the lead in trying to devise a plan to get the mystic device. Meanwhile, Leo slinks away and grabs the device by clocking the situation (by knowing his father well enough to predict his actions - something he does with each family member multiple times in the series) and making a move on his own.

It works out perfectly fine, and is ultimately the best move, and it’s honestly okay that he didn’t consult everyone for something so small when it’s such a non issue to get it, but it nicely sets up how this tends to go in the series, including how it goes in the movie.

To be honest episode one is actually really good at setting up a lot of things for each character in the long run, this is just one example that caught my attention, as small and unassuming as it is.

it's hard to imagine this blizzard of a man ever falling for someone, but he does, and he falls pretty hard when it happens although it's like, an extremely rare occurrence.

it's the classic love-at-first-sight scenario. you're at the restaurant, conversing with madame bo from a distance, when you catch his attention. he likes what he sees, and like the typical man, he discreetly stares until you're out of sight

he doesn't think much about you afterwards, but the seed of attraction has already been planted and soon grows.

somehow, coincidentally, he meets you again at the same place (fate perhaps?) but this time, it's different—you're both face-to-face and introductions ensue.

since the lin kuei trio occasionally unwind at the establishment after a mission, and you're a healer who madame bo often consults, it's no surprise your paths cross

bi-han is laser focused on you as the said woman introduces you to the group, observing you like a specimen: your physicality, mannerisms, demeanour, and finds himself magnetized by your graceful aura

but he doesn't speak to you at all while pleasantries are exchanged, making him the odd one out. however, his assessment of you is positive indicating a romantic interest.

despite the brief interaction, you leave a lasting impression on him and have begun to take up permanent residence in his mind.

but it doesn't end there; he sees you quite often due to your affiliation with the old woman, and each time he does, his heart skips a beat; he's emotionally incapacitated, rendered powerless (proximity to him is the only way anything can happen tbh)

he represses this newfound emotion until he's unable to resist, ultimately surrendering to it. and believe it or not, he makes the first move. surprisingly

i know the consensus is that he's pretty much inexperienced in romantic relationships and hence wouldn't approach, but for a man of his calibre, there's no way he hasn't been in a committed relationship, even if short-lived. moreover, he goes after what he wants, romantic matters are no different; the only issue is it'll take him forever to get to it.

he has to first wrestle with himself over his feelings towards you. and once he overcomes this internal struggle, it'll take your sustained absence to propel him to finally pursue you out of fear that you might slip away from his grasp.

while he won't directly approach you, he communicates his interest via subordinates, which leads to unexpected appearances—a blue-clad ninja at your doorstep bearing gifts

you're very confused, but they explain they've been sent by their grandmaster. it is then you come to the realization that the standoffish, intimidating man you encountered at the restaurant has taken a liking to you! but wait- how does he know where you live? (he's gathered bits of information about you)

in his quest to conquer your heart and claim it as his, he first aims to impress. expect to be bombarded by gifts or flowers every fortnight. he also does this for ego reasons, to flaunt his status before eventually requesting a date—through a mouthpiece, of course.

the occasion is quite awkward, overly formal, with you doing most of the talking because he wants to know all about you like the back of his hand

if you attempt to redirect focus on him to satisfy any curiosity you may have, he basically shuts it down by saying something along the lines of, "i lead a formidable warrior clan, that is sufficient enough." you can't tell if he's just reserved or severely lacking in social skills, but if you peer hard enough, the lines are blurred.

he is actually very mindful of his words and respectful towards you. he is aware of how blunt and abrasive he can come across and doesn't want to scare you away; that would undo all his efforts and bring them to naught, and he isn't going to self-sabotage, not after coming this far

he's gentlemanly, and its obvious from his body language and actions he's infatuated with you. but being a conversationalist and showing affection aren't his strong suits, so this is where you come in. the ball is in your court to steer the budding relationship forward otherwise it'll stagnate

Family Web failed apocalypse Future Designs

(part 1 of 3. eventually. They do not exist yet. Later this week for sure)

Since there's a lot of information for all these guys, i'm going to post them in batches.

Donnie is 24 by the time they find Raph's kids. (he got Clara when he was 20. like He kinda just walked into the kitchen with a tiny tot one day, grabbed a cup of coffee, and left while everyone was still processing the palm sized turtle he had in a washcloth.)

He tried to go to college for a computer science major but he already knew what they were teaching and kept trying to correct the teachers. The whole thing frustrated him to the point of Rage quitting after a month and starting his own freelance business as a security consultant.

Basically, he gets paid to walk into a building (or sit down at one of their computers), tell them the biggest flaws in their system and suggest what they can do instead. If they pay him enough, he might even set up a design of his own.

(when the people don't believe him about how bad their security system is, he or Jennika break into the building in the middle of the night and leave a business card in their most secure place. He usually gets a call back within 24 hours lol)

He mostly works in the hidden city but he will branch out to human companies (with use of a broach) if suitably asked.

As far as his gear goes, after fighting the krang (and his little apocalypse trip) he refuses to be unprepared. But he can't go around fully suited all the time so he has his gear hidden/collapsed into bulky bracelets and necklaces (some mystic required lol). All he has to do is press the little medallion around his neck and it all folds out from there (like mama touching her broach sometimes to transform : ) ) So yes, Donnie gets a little techy magical girl transformation. as a treat

Jennika, on the other hand, is 22 at this point. She's fully taken on the job of Mama's assistant, pay and all, and has an absolutely killer information network for spy work.

She and Donnie are thick as thieves by this point. Between the two of them they know ALL. And as such, they will occasionally help each other with their jobs, if the mood strikes them. (or if the other has a suitable payment for the inconvenience.)

Jennika took some classes in college but it really wasn't her scene. So she dropped out.

Like Donnie, she wants to be prepared at all times. So she always has on a ninja outfit (reinforced via tech and Mikey webbing/mystic). But she wears bulky outfits over it so it looks more normal, and so she can just take the bulky outer clothes off quickly and be ready for anything in a moment.

So there's my Adult "Must Know Everything" Duo

Up next is probably going to be Leo and Mikey. Followed by Raph's 2 forms.

Jay = High Intelligence, Low Wisdom

Kai = Low Intelligence, High Wisdom

Essay about this concept below the cut

Now these are all just my interpretations of the characters, I don't necessarily have hard evidence on hand to back all this up, but here we go:

I've been trying to put my finger on the Kai smart/dumb duality, and I think I can finally somewhat make out my thoughts. Kai is not smart. Book smarts don't come easily to him, he's not great at math, he's not great at overly complex stratagizing- but he's got a LOT of great knowledge in him.

Take the dragon healing in DR. He might not intuitively know how different medicines work or why, but he's got injured enough that he knows that type of information is important to know, and so he's forced it into his head. He couldn't tell you why the blue goop helpped the dragon, but he knew that it would, and that it would be important to remember that it would.

He's pretty good at navigating complex social situations, because he's good at reading people. Having had a history with extreme emotions, he knows how to take them into account, and knows how important it is to do so, even if it's not necessarily logical. I hate to say this, but he's very emotionally intelligent, which sounds kinda like an insult but is actually insanely valuable, because humans are inherently emotional creatures.

He's got a solid basis of common sense, and is constantly looking at the bigger picture. That's why he can come up with the best outline for a plan, because he can not think through the details. Now, if he tries to implement a plan of his without consulting others, he's probably going to miss some very important details, and screw himself over. But, he's most likely to have the best basic premise for an effective plan. This is why his intuition is usually correct. He's not logically thinking through the most likely scenario given all available factors, he's looking at every problem from the birds eye view, and is easily able to fill in the blanks, because he sees the whole picture. You can not tell me this kid knew Lloyd was the Green Ninja because he used logical deduction to eliminate all other possibilities, he had a gut feeling based on realizing the value of human life.

Now, sometimes you need details. And Kai is not good at those. He sucks at those. Big time. But he's self aware enough to know when those times are (most of the time, sometimes he wastes all his lives in a video game before talking to anyone else).

The thing all of these points have in common is that he's lived a very full life while making very many mistakes, and he's learned from all of them. He learns from his dumb mistakes, and is wise enough to know which lessons are worth holding on to.

Jay on the other hand... does not learn from his mistakes. He's got a real thick skull.

Inside that skull is a really smart guy who intuitively latches on to engineering and science concepts. He's got a whole heck of a lot of information that his brain is holding onto simply because it can. This man is all about the details. He gets hyperfixated on details to the point where it's a problem. He's the most likely to solve the intricate problem facing the team, forget that they need to stay hidden, and yell "I did it!". Good at details, bad at big picture. This is also why he usually gives up hope so easily compared to the rest of the team. He can not think long term, he can not see the bigger picture like Kai can, so road blocks in the current plan seem insurmountable.

Sure, he might have rigged an old sailing ship with rocket boosters, but he couldn't unscramble "darnagom" his logical problem solving skills are not what's carrying him.

My standby for the Jay dumb/smart duality is that he should have a significant amount of William Osman energy to him. He's very smart, and can work out how to solve intricate problems and make insane builds, but if making said things is a dangerous or dumb idea has never once crossed his mind, and if it has, he has actively chosen to ignore it. Jay's intelligence is much more creativity based than I think a lot of people like to think. Engineering is about slapping crazy ideas together which barely hold together at first- and that's Jay's brand of smarts.

If you compare this to Zane, that's the vital component that his intelligence is missing- the creativity. He is VERY good at assessing options, but not so great at coming up with new solutions himself. He's running on pure logic and tested successes. He's also missing that social intelligence that Kai has. I'd venture to say that Zane is, by far the most gullible member of the team. If there is not a solid logical reason to doubt something, he is absolutely going to take it at face value. Point being, all the ninja have different smarts, and stupidities, let's not try to conflate them too much.

They're Monsters!

Pair: Bayverse!Donnie x reader

Summary: The Turtles infiltrated Police Headquarters and get caught. One police officer insulted them and that's not going by (Y/N) that easily.

Being Donnie's girlfriend, the Turtles figured you'd be calm and collected like him. But in reality, your like Raph in a tiny, human body. So when times like this happens, they have no idea what kind of (Y/n) they're gonna get.

"Are you freaking kidding me?!" You hissed at Donnie as you go around from your hiding spot, Mikey running the other way to tell Raph what he heard.

You knew the Turtles were starting to struggle not being accepted, especially since they're growing up and hatred being stuck in the sewers.

Raph was getting more hotheaded as ever around his brothers, Mikey was starting to get annoying, though the orher two brothers were calmer you can still tell they wanna be above ground.

Leo and Donnie looked at you, Leo sighs "We can explain"

"No, no. Its the lying for me" You said. "Leo, your gonna lose their trust. Especially Raph's"

"They don't need to know every decision I make-"

"But a big change like this?" You sighs. "Forget it, forget I said anything"

You walked away towards the homemade pizza box couch and collapsed. Sighing, you take out your phone and scrolled through Instagram.

Leo was practicing his katas when Raph came out of his gym, he walked slowly towards the leader, ready to let out steam.

"Pop quiz" Raph says jumping onto the platform. "What are the three most important traits of a ninja?"

Leo gave him a small grin as he continues his kata, "Speed. Stealth-"

"And honour. Where's the honour in keeping secrets from your brothers?" Raph accused.

"I don't know what your talking about?"

"Oh now your adding lying on the list" Raph accused.

You walk over to the two, pushing them apart by their plastrons. "Enough"

"But-"

You raised a finger as Raph silence, a clear annoyed look on his face.

"This isn't fair Leonardo. Lying to your brothers about a life changing event. What is with you?" You sternly spoke.

If you two are referring to what Donnie told me about the purple ooze, it's called compartmentalization of information," Leo replies closing up on Raph's face.

"If there's even a chance that ooze can make us human-"

"We're turtles, whether you like it or not," Leo says in aggravation.

"It's not about what I like, it's about what people up there are willing to accept!" Raph gestures to outside.

"True acceptance only comes from within," Leo recites.

"Don't give me that fortune cookie muck" Raph glares.

You backed from the two, shaking your head as you turned and walked away. Donnie rushes after you, worried about your reacting to all of this.

"You have to believe me when I say this isn't the outcome I wanted" Donnie said.

You shake your head, "Why didn't you tell me, or consult me? Why Leo?"

"I... I get guess I got too excited" he sighs. "This is something I thought everyone would want. To be normal and living above grouns. You know? To be a normal couple"

"Honey" you coo, reaching out for his hand. "I'm so sorry"

"It's fine-"

"It's not. Donnie, you should have told me this is how you felt. I should've took it into consideration. I shouldn't have gotten mad" you said.

"I'm sorry, I-" his device on left wrist beeped, Donnie paused to take a look and gave you a sincere look. "I'm sorry honey, there's a break in-"

"Say no more" you smiled. "Go be a hero"

"Leo. Leo, an alarm just tripped at the Hayden Planetarium. We have to get uptown" Donnie reports rushing towards the blue and red clad.

"Gear up, Donnie" Leo commands. "You two stay here"

"You're benching me?" Raph yells out as the two left.

"What did I do?!" Mikey asks.

Raph had a plan. He had a plan to infiltrate the Police Headquarters with Mikey to get the last of the ooze they got in custody. He called April and Casey down to the lair with a plan in mind, the problem is how to get (Y/n) into the plan without getting much trouble.

He approaches you slowly, as you sat at Donnie's surveillance room watching as your boyfriend and the leader in blue arrive at the museum.

"Hey (Y/n), do you have a minute?" Raph asked.

You turned the chair around, "Sure. What's up Raph?"

"I know Leo and I got into an argument about the ooze-"

"Let me guess you wanna go into police headquarters to find it and use it for yourself?" You said crossing your arms.

"I-I wouldn't say it like that" Raph replied shyly.

"The blue prints are printed. Do not tell Donnie" you said with a smirk. "I'll be reckon. Watch from the outside"

"Thanks" Raph sighs and turns to walk away, but paused. "Why are you helping me?"

"I... I guess I never considered how Donnie really felt. He never told me about his desire to be normal and when he did... I guess I wanna make it up to him" you said.

"You're a good girlfriend (Y/n). Don't forget it" he smiles.

(Y/n) gathered the blue prints and pens, as the rest gathered around the dinner table. April and Casey arrived and sat next to each other, (Y/n) sat next to Mikey who dug into the pizza.

Raph clears his throat as everyone looked up at him, "We need to break into Police Headquarters"

A pause.

A really long, awkward pause.

"So, you want us to break into Police Headquarters?" April repeats.

"Uh, yeah" Raph states obviously. "Donnie said he needs more of the purple ooze to track Bebop and Rocksteady. And you said the cops would've logged it into their evidence control room by now"

"Okay, and Leo is good with this plan?" April questions skeptically.

(Y/n) clears her throat. "Actually, Raph is in charge of this one. Right Mikes?"

"U-Uh right" Mikey says unsure.

Raph places the blueprint down the table. "So, we can take the elevator shafts and vents. We need you three to stay on the ground-"

"Whoa I can't just walk into Police Headquarters" Casey refused.

"What are you? Chicken?" Raph teased.

"Hey!" Casey stood, closing up to Raph. "Who are you calling chicken, turtle?"

(Y/n) chuckles, her temper rising carefully. She reaches out pulling Casey down back his seat. "Listen, do you want to get Beebop and Rocksteady or not?"

Another pause, Casey says. "So we're breaking into Police Headquarters"

"We got one last boondoggle. We need to find someone to sneak you guys in past security checkpoint" Raph says looking at Mikey is disgust as the youngest turtle made a pizza sandwich with pizza. "Only plan I got so far may be a tad less appetizing"

After convincing Vern to break into the police, everyone got to their spot. (Y/n) sat across the headquarters, looking through the binoculars. Her heart jump out of her chest as she sees the two mutant turtles breakthrough the ceiling. She tossed the binoculars and rushed into the headquarters, seconds before Leo and Donnie arrive.

"Raph, what're you doing with that?" Leo accuses.

"Honey?!" Donnie exclaims seeing his lover.

"Freeze! Don't move! Don't move!" An officer shouts, gun pointed.

Raph's eyes widen repeating, "No, no, no, no, no, no!"

"Freeze right there!"

"Don't move! We'll shoot!"

Raph and Mikey looked at each other as they slowly kneel, (Y/n) rushes towards the two as the officer raises his gun shooting. Pain filled (Y/n)'s right shoulder as she places herself in front of the youngest turtle.

"Don't shoot them" (Y/n) pleads, she winces her shoulder bleeds out.

"Move girl!" An officer shouts.

"No!" (Y/n) shouts. "You don't understand!-"

BANG!

(Y/n) didn't know how quickly it happened. A shot was fired and she placed her body between Raph and Mikey, no matter how small she still blocked them. She felt a huge pain on her chest, she struggled to breathe, she barely registered her body hitting the ground as the four yell out for her.

She saw the color purple as her eyes dropped close.

Basically hc's with the ninja who have a little sibling(the reader) and they have these like witch powers that they're trying to control. The ninja of that scenario try to help the reader with various training sessions, leading them to be a mentor for them. When the reader gets the hang of their powers the ninja are reminded of a memory of their childhood where the reader helped the ninja as children in a really dark time and the ninja see the training sessions as repayment for the readers help all those years ago.

Ninjago - Being the Ninjas’ Little Witch Sister

Zane

When you first ask him to train you, he’s a bit surprised

Of course he agrees though

He proves to be a very patient teacher, both with you and himself as you both continue to learn

He reads up on magic extensively to better know how to help you

He also frequently consults master Wu

If there’s something he doesn’t know, he’ll just tell you to do something else while he researches it

He doesn’t want you doing anything he isn’t able to predict/help you with

Both for your safety and for the sake of your surroundings

As you master concepts, he moves on to progressively harder ones until you’re a skilled witch

His meticulous teaching would have rubbed off on you, so you rarely make mistakes, doing things by the book

Or should I say grimoire?

One day, when he’s watching you perform a healing spell on an old man, he remembers the first time you used your powers

It was when Dr. Julien fell down the stairs

Zane remembers hearing him cry out in pain; the sound still haunts him to this day

He was terrified that his father was fatally wounded

But when he rushed to his side, you were already there, holding his wrinkled hands with yours, which were glowing

You had unintentionally used a healing spell

If you hadn’t, Dr. Julien might have actually been seriously hurt

Zane’s forever thankful for that, and this forever thankful for you

Kai

He’s stoked that you want him to teach you

He always thought your powers were cool, and he’s excited to test their limits with you

He always pushes you hard, which can get a little exhausting

Eventually he’ll ease up a little as he realizes that you need rest

If there’s something he doesn’t know, he encourages you to try it anyway

Meanwhile he’s hiding behind a metal shield in the corner

You learn through experimentation, which leads to many, many failures

But Kai never stops encouraging you to keep trying, and eventually you master your powers

You start joining the ninjas on missions, and one time you used a spell that knocked an entire posse of attackers on their backs

Kai stared at you with wide eyes, flashing back to the time you used a similar spell

It was back at the blacksmith shop; a particularly obnoxious customer was insisting that he “test” a sword

He ended up snatching it and running at Nya with the clear intention of nabbing her

It was then that you used the spell, downing the assailant

Kai had stared at you with the same wide eyes back then

But now he smiled, feeling grateful that you were always there to help protect those closest to you

Jay

Much like Kai, he’s more than thrilled to mentor you

Most of his teaching consists of him insisting you try things he’s seen in movies and comics

Which makes lessons fun, but disappointing at times when you can’t figure things out

In his excitement sometimes he’ll insist you try your spells on him

This has led to the both of you getting hurt many times

Yet neither of you seem to learn your lesson

He’s quick in getting you out on the field

He wants you to be able to test more dangerous things, and he sees the battlefield as the perfect spot to do so

So he’ll take you along on missions pretty early on, making sure you stick to his side so he can protect you

But when your moment comes, he yanks you forward and pushes you towards the enemy like a rag doll

The slight panic this induces in you amplifies your spells

Once you used a spell that released a bright flash of light at the enemy, blinding them

Jay recognizes the spell

It was much smaller at the time, but you had used it when you were both kids

The power was out at the junkyard, and you were both alone while Ed and Edna went to fix the fuse

Jay was terrified in the dark; he was literally about to have a panic attack when your little cupped hands summoned a ball of light

Mesmerized, he forgot his panic, instead smiling hugely at you

He claps you on the back when he remembers that moment, silently beaming with pride at all the progress you’ve made

Cole

He thinks being a magic mentor sounds pretty cool, so of course he agrees when you ask for some lessons

He’s a really chill teacher; almost to an annoying extent

If there’s something he doesn’t know, he just shrugs and asks what you think

(Which happens more often than you’d like)

He won’t encourage you to try more dangerous things until you’re ready though

He always reminds you to be careful and not overwork yourself

Progress is slow, partly because you’re pretty much guiding your own training

He’s just there to support you

Eventually he decides that you’re ready for some real action

Well. Long story short you ended up falling off a cliff with him

But you used a spell that froze you midair right before you hit the ground

You both planted your feet safely on the ground, quaking from the adrenaline

Cole is reminded of a strikingly similar moment from your childhood

You were rehearsing a dance routine on stage

He wasn’t paying attention, and he ended up twirling right off the stage

But luckily you were there, and you froze him in the air when his face was mere inches from the floor

He had hugged and thanked you profusely that day, and he did the same now, lifting you off your shaky feet and kissing your cheek endlessly

Lloyd

He has some experience with magic, but not enough to make him a very competent teacher

He’s humble when he teaches you, always admitting when he isn’t sure

He’ll go with you to find out more when there’s something he doesn’t know

You always learn together :)

He makes sure you don’t push yourself too hard; he knows what that’s like, and it isn’t fun

So your training is a little slow but very steady

He lets you decide when you’re ready to go on missions

He trusts you to know your own capabilities, so if you think you can hold your own, then you can hold your own

That doesn’t mean he’s any less impressed when you turn your opponent into a ferret

He remembers when you pulled a similar move several years ago

You were both cornered by bullies, with Lloyd in front, trying to protect you

Suddenly you pushed past him, pointing your finger at the main culprit and turning him into a mouse

The effect only lasted a few seconds, but it was enough for you both to get away

Lloyd laughed aloud at the memory, ruffling your hair proudly

Nya

At first she readily agrees to help train you

But as time progresses, it becomes obvious how incompetent you both are in magical knowledge

She knows a bit, but not nearly enough to coach a fledgling witch

She gets almost as frustrated as you when you try and fail to learn spells

But she calls on her knowledge from her own training, and she realizes that first she needs to fix your attitudes

So you both adopt a more “go with the flow”-esque style, and the spells start clicking

You both glow with excitement at each new mastered concept

High fives all around!! :D

She’s eager to get you on the battlefield; she knows how much it sucks to have to wait

You come to a massive gorge on your first mission, one too big to jump across

You use your magic to create a bridge, allowing everyone to cross safely

As she crosses, Nya recalls seeing a similar miracle performed by you in the past

You had both gone out to pick flowers in the woods

There was a flash flood while you were out, and the little creek you had to cross to get home had become a raging cascade of impassable muddy water

But you had used your little bridge spell, and you both made it safely home

Nya remembers that day fondly, and takes much pride in knowing how far you’ve come since then

Hey, Grandpa? So There's This Ninja Turtle...

(based on Oblivious x Oblivious series)

Miyamoto Usagi is no stranger to the strange. Being in touch with his thousand-year descendant while being in the afterlife by the power of a giant magic crystal is one of them.

His grandson, Yuichi Usagi would sometimes meditate to consult with him through the crystal and Miyatmoto would offer advice to questions his grandson couldn't ask others.

Active meditation through katas opens the mind, so he wasn't surprised when his grandson would blurt out something. Until-

"Hey, Grandpa? So there's this ninja turtle..."

Miyamoto Usagi was no stranger to ninja turtles. Especially blue ones.

But as Miyamoto listened about his grandson's Leo every time Yuichi visits, his Leo was far from Miyamoto's and yet the same.

Yuichi's Leo had not been a leader of his brothers first.

This Leo had the freeness of the wind against the self-discipline of the one Miyamoto knew. Yet had the same sharp mind but clothed in flippant nonchalance.

"He acts like a joke," Yuichi said, staring at nothing as he let the words come out in thought, "But he knows what his family and even his enemies would do and use it to his advantage." His hand fretted by tugging at his own ears. "No one seems to notice that he takes note of everything."

Miyamato simply watched as Yuichi held his sword close, lost in whatever was unspoken. "Sometimes, I wonder what he sees when he looks at me."

Meeting the Ninja Turtles

Sometimes Usagi and his friends would need the turtles help in a mission. Leo and the others certainly got curious when Usagi said in his message that there would be a temporary member in their crew.

When they got to the Ki temple, they don't see anyone new. Until Usagi's eyes started glowing.

Leo watched as his best friend's face became that of a stoic scowl he had never seen in Yuichi before.

"Greetings," a deeper, older voice said from Yuichi's mouth as he took them all in, "young ninjas."

Turns out the Ki crystal has transferred Usagi's grandpa's soul into him so that he could lead them to an artifact that he had hidden thousands of years ago.

"OH, IT'S LIKE MEETING GRAM-GRAM!" Mikey exclaimed all starry-eyed at the mystic-ness of it all. Donnie is reluctantly fascinated. Raph, a bit freaked out but nothing he couldn't handle.

"Is Usagi still in there?" Leo asked, craning to look into eyes that were still glowing blue. He was comforted at the fact that Gen, Chizu and Kitsune looked like they were still getting used to it.

He froze when that stone-faced scowl locked in on him with something akin to familiarity. What the heck?

"He is sleeping, while I am out here." Then Usagi's eyes stopped glowing and his Usagi was back. Leo silently exhaled in relief as he smiled for him.

Getting Used to Gramps

Leo was starting to get a handle at co-leading his bros.

But he still couldn't help but keep an eye on Usagi.

Sometimes, Usagi would be distracted as his eyes flicker blue, nodding or letting out a fond chuckle.

Sometimes, his grandpa would need to take the lead, and a stranger would be walking in his best friend's body -graceful and dignified.

Leo was NOT bothered by it. Things are still the same, it's just they have a temporary member for this special case of a mission.

When they set camp, Leo crashed beside Yuichi and leaned heavily against Yuichi's side, already whining. When he turned to face Yuichi, he was met by a old-man-scowl instead.

"Holy Pizz, I thought you're him!" Leo yelped, crashing on the ground as he scrambled away from Usagi's grandpa -or rather, Usagi's grandpa in his body.

Grandpa Usagi simply raised a brow before finishing the map he was drawing on the ground with a stick.

It's fine. It's really fine, Leo tells himself. But when the group were starting to argue how to get there, Leo had to hear Usagi's say so he set possessed Usagi aside.

"Look, Gramps. Can I call you Gramps? Anyway, can you turn in for a bit? I wanna talk to my Usagi."

Leo refused to look away when Gramps-Usagi drilled holes in his head with his glowing blue scowl alone. It didn't go over either of their heads that he had just pertained to Usagi as his in front of his great-great-x grandpa.

"I'm his best friend. One of his best friends," Leo relented. But if Gramps wanted to play stare-down, he decided to play another game of his own -misdirection.

So he talked.

"Look, I know you're here to help and all," with a wave of his hand as he leaned on his sword, "But Usagi also has good points when it comes to tracking in forests like these. He did grow up on the farm near the woods which he would go into when he wanted to get away for a bit, comprehende? You know what I mean?" he said as he leaned his hips to the other side. "Anywho-"

There was suddenly a furred finger placed across his lips to silence him.

"Do you think I cannot decide the best for my grandson?" Gramps asked calmly.

"I'm saying let him decide too," Leo said, refusing to back down. He was this ready to jump beyond the "rude to elders" line if Gramps turned out to be something else.

"Leo?" Yuichi blinked. "Why's my finger on your mouth?"

Leo immediately stepped away from him, sputtering in surprise.

But Yuichi wasn't paying attention. His eyes were flashing blue again. "Grandpa," he half-heartedly admonished.

"What?" Leo asked, annoyed. But confusion replaced it as he watched Yuichi's nose turn cherry red -the only part of his body that fur could not hide a blush.

"Nothing," Yuichi quickly said. "Anyway, he said you want to ask me something?"

Conclusion

When the mission was done and Miyamot's soul was transferred back to his afterlife through the Ki crystal, Yuichi was finally able to say something to Leo without an audience in his head.

"He says he approves of you."

"What?" Leo asked, confused.

"Grandpa."

"I know, I mean why?" He was pretty sure he stepped on some social land mines when it came to Usagi's ancestor.

"He didn't tell me exactly why. But he did say he almost took Mariko's path with me."

"Mariko?" Leo echoed. He knew of her in the Usagi Yojimbo comics. The childhood friend-turned-lover who married someone else.

"Yeah," Yuichi said with a shrug, just as confused as he was.

(If they have paid attention to the Usagi Yojimbo comics by being in Miyamoto's shoes, they may have understood. Mariko made decisions for the both of them and kept him in the dark with the best intentions in mind. But it still hurt him and prevented him from permanently returning to his home village at Mariko's request. But it seems things at least things would be different for his grandson.)
