(16-10-20) The MNOs in the UK own different amounts of bandwith at different frequencies and bandwidths. Surprisingly there are some bands not actually used at present. This includes the 2.6Ghz unpaired frequency owned by EE. EE have today asked OgCOM if they can sell this frequency to O2. This frequency can be used to speedup 4G by enhancing download bandwidth and the expectation is that IO2 will use it for this purpose. EE do have a significant amount of frequency in this area of the spectrum.
So why are EE selling? Companies, like people, sell goods they do not want nor use. But there could be more to this than a simple trade. EE may be looking to buy more 5G bandwidth and this sale will lower their overall amount of frequency thus allowing them to purchase more of the 5G bands. OgCOM are putting limits on overall frequency holdings after the 5G auction due in Spring 2021. Who can tell.
