Juli’s mother, a beautician, was very thin, with unusually bright eyes. For dinner she made a soup called “boy-catching soup” and a cake called “mother-in-law cake.” These two dishes seemed to sum up a whole worldview of entrapment and placation.

when u go to write a mentally ill person in ur story you are presented two options. the first option is to write your mental illness realistically as you actually experience it with all the ups and downs and people who are like you will resonate with it and feel seen. except every person who reads instagram infographics on mental health that uses the phrase narcicisst for anyone who does anything that crosses them and unironically call themself a dark empath will call you scary and tell you that youre demonizing mentally ill people
the second option is to lie and write inspiration porn for those people to get hard to

Love the contrast between the Americans’ “Apollo” and the Soviets’ “Sputnik.” You got the Americans naming their rocket after a Greek god trying to communicate the grandness and importance of this rocket. And you got the Soviets naming their rocket “fellow traveler.” Like a friend you go on an  adventure with together. This rocket is our little friend lol

why is religious Christmas imagery all so joyful and pleasant? where is the inherent horror of the birth of Christ? A mother is handed her newborn child, wailing and innocent. Her hands come away sticky. Red. Simply by giving her son life she has already killed him. He is doomed from the beginning. Her love will not save him from suffering. Because the thing cradled in her arms is not a baby, it is a sacrifice: born amongst the other bleating animals whose blood will one day be spilled in the name of what demands it. the night is silent with anticipation. Mary, did you know? That your womb was also a grave?

it is so disgusting watching other white people reassure each other about taking breaks from social media and "prioritizing your mental health" when literally the one thing Palestinians are asking for more than anything is that people do not look away from what is happening to them
EDIT since some people seem to have misunderstood: i'm talking about the white people who have given themselves and each other permission to check out and go on about their lives in blissful ignorance, not the people who actually are taking mental health breaks. hence the scare quotes. specifically i was reacting to a trend on tiktok at the time but it happens everywhere on social media

It’s insane to see that this is Twitter users’ reactions to this when this is just completely normal on Tumblr. Twitter is such a hellscape of privacy violations that standard anonymity features like hidden likes are treated as suspicious.

Peter took us first to the American Express. Everyone was exchanging either traveler’s checks or dollars, just like I was—nobody was using an ATM card. The next stop was a bookstore, where people bought phrase books. There was one shelf of English books. I picked up a book called Favorite Hungarian One-Minute Tales. The first tale, “On the triviality of conversations,” was written in dialogue form: “How are you?” “I’m wonderful, thanks, and you?” “I’m okay, but why are you dragging that rope after you?” “That’s not a rope—those are my intestines.” That was it—that was the whole story. I was dumbfounded. Was it possible that the concern over the triviality-dungeon of conversations, which I had taken to be one of Ivan’s particularities, was actually part of the Hungarian national character? How did you separate where someone was from, from who they were?

people when trauma victims act traumatized especially in a way that is unpalatable to them because it involves lashing out and unpredictable moods and having boundary issues rather than just being demure, sad, and consumable
