You know, let’s do a Kin’emon while we’re at it. Where was this dude during Dressrosa? Honestly in hindsight they did a pretty good job obscuring how strong the samurai were up until Wano. It’s crazy to think he probably could have given Doflamingo a good fight or handled Caesar himself if things went differently. But seriously...this is some straight up Samurai Champloo nonsense and I am loving it.

The doctor got infected eh? I guess you could say that’s a taste of his own medic— no, that pun doesn’t work. Taste of his own patients? Idk. There’s, there’s something here.

One Piece Ironing Boards. Episode 995 and Others
I’m a tiny bit obsessed with OP transport styles. Law wasn’t too happy to be lugged around like a flattened out ironing board in Dressrosa, and it looks like Yamato’s picked up Luffy by the scruff of his back? almost.
Like a wayward kitten. Not quite so much as tucked him under his arm, as carried him like a shopping parcel. Or there are even basketball vibes there. Luffy likes this mode about as much as Law did.
Marco’s just rolling with it. King.
And is Law the only one who’s had the ignominy of the bridal carry? Oda? Really. Like, we know your wife likes him and all...

but couldn’t it have been Bepo? (I know he was sequestered away on Zou and all). Maybe he would have bled out in a fireman’s hold or something similar.

If you’re manga only, this whole segment is a treat. We just get to see the samurai racing to the opening strike and mowing down some mooks, but it’s this dope as hell black and white scene with a more uptempo version of their already cool theme. Kiku does not show off in it, which is fine her story here is supposed to be tragic not cool. So here’s an Izo!

a few notes on ep. 995
So any of the few screen shots I took for episode 995 were pretty crappy, and lots of it is better suited to gifs, so keep an eye out—there was some wicked animation.
BUT, my take away as Yamoto/Yama-o lugs Luffy around like a plank of wood, Luffy protesting, is this is the Oda-Law treatment, I think.
Izou carries Marco that way later too. Heh. Although Marco just kicks back and enjoys it (manga spoiler).
Now Luffy knows how it feels.
Momonosuke was indeed very brave. And King knows Izou? The Akazaya Nine rushing Kaidou’s space (not really quarters)—very cool. Also, the two sons crying for the loss of their fathers. Ah.
Good ep.

I've been extremely excited to see chapter 995 animated because I fell in love with that one Nami scene ever since I first read it a year ago.
Yet, when I saw the episode I felt the scene wasn't as impactful as I remembered it to be. So decided to go over the original panels and share why I love them so much!
1) Nami never denies Luffy's dream.
I know the translation had Nami say "Luffy will never be able to..." to give us the idea she will follow Ulti's demand! But in Japanese, because the negative of a sentence is made at the end, Nami never really says "Luffy will never be-"
Her words are ルフィは 海賊王 には なります... 絶対に/Luffy wa kaizoku ou ni wa narimasu... zettai ni.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Ulti expected her to say probably was "Luffy wa kaizoku ou ni wa narimasen" which translates to "Luffy will not he pirate king".
In fact, until Nami finishes her sentence Ulti, Usopp, and the reader don't know if she's going to deny Luffy's dream or not!
It's possible she intended to, but simply couldn't bring herself to do it.
She then adds "絶対に" (absolutely; definitly; unconditionally) which emphasizes how certain she is, how much she believes he will do it!
2) Worthless Pride
Throughout One Piece Nami is probably that one main character who isn't bothered by lying about how she truly feels, especially if that will keep her alive.
A good example of this happens during Skypiea - While everyone present challenges Enel and is consequently left unconscious Nami immediately reverts to her old self and asks Enel to take her with him!
While most straw hats would rather die then through away their pride, Nami is usually shown complaining about their worthless pride, and how those futile feelings will get them killed.
So it's peak character growth for her to have this moment - for her to so certainly declare her belief in Luffy and his dream, even at the cost of her own life.
In this scene, Nami picks death instead of living with the weight of denying Luffy's dream. Nami from 900 chapters ago wouldn't have hesitated to talk her way around this situation, to protect her life over anything else.
But here, Nami has something far more important at stake than her life - Luffy's dream, and that worthless pride.
