One of my favorite metaphors of Glass Onion is the Mona Lisa vs the Glass Onion.
Miles is constantly comparing himself, whether directly or indirectly, to the Mona Lisa. He wants to be “forever remembered in the same breath” as her. He plays up the mystery and the complexity of the painting, the artistry, the skill and the knowledge that went into it; All traits that he wants others to see in him.
But when Miles is describing the painting, who gets the closeup shot? Not Miles, but Helen. Helen is the one who gets multiple shots throughout the movie mirroring the Mona Lisa- same pose, same unreadable expression.
Because Miles isn’t the Mona Lisa, however much he wishes he was. Miles is the Glass Onion. Something trying to look complex and layered on the outside, when in reality, the center is in plain sight. Miles isn’t some enigmatic genius, he is exactly what he appears to be at first glance: an idiotic, rich, egotistical, shithead.
He didn’t make his own puzzles, he didn’t write his own murder, he didn’t create his own art, he didn’t even come up with the idea for his company. His island is filled with things made by other people. He isn’t even the person who did the thing that will forever connect him to the Mona Lisa. The thing that will forever tie him to Helen Brand.
Helen is the one with complexity. Helen is the one surrounded by mystery. Helen is the one who’s more than meets the eye. Helen is the Mona Lisa, and the Mona Lisa destroyed herself to take down Miles Bron.

rian johnson took all that time, put in all that effort to make glass onion a fantastic period piece to the first four months of pandemic, a prescient narrative that anticipates the stupidity of rich billionaires, and then pulled the rug from under us because the world of benoit blanc just straight up doesn't have the mona lisa anymore

I actually love glass onion being set deep in covid times but where's the post that was like . Glass Onion should have ended with benoit blanc getting home and testing positive for covid . I really think that would've tied the whole thing together

I only watched Knives Out two days ago because I wanted to understand all the Glass Onion memes, and maybe that's a huge bias on my part but I knew Daniel Craig had an accent in the movies, i just didn't know which one, and I 110% expected a butchered french accent, because, come on, Benoit Blanc!
And nothing, NOTHING, could have prepared me for my reaction the first time he opened his mouth

when andi said her life was taken away from her by someone, everyone in that room - and then emphasized it - my life! do you even know what that means? - and you come back and realize it’s helen saying that and she means it literally because andi is dead.

ancient greece had some weird notions of the female going on. like what do you mean the innermost nature of women is the concealment of their nature? what is pandora an imitation of? if women are by nature deceptive, do they in fact reveal the truth of what they are in using their bodies to deceive? can you cover covering itself?

thank you @skijjiki for tagging me!!!! i love these types of tagging games so much!!
last song: Tokyo Calling by ATARASHII GAKKO! (pls watch the music video. its so good 😭) im kind of, sort of, obsessed with this and i have been listening to it non-stop like my life depends on it. anyway
youtube
fav color: hmm im really feeling brown right now (wow! that sounds awful! im not changing my answer tho. brown rules.)
currently reading: im able to read only fanfics at the moment because anything that involves a book and new characters feels like too much work for me for some reason and also like im cheating at my classes in university. both of these suck big butt and i hate being like this but it's true. anyway please read a million times along the way by starsqwub. its a bokuaka fic, it hasnt updated since 2022 and it made me cry every chapter. its about love, its about friends, its about being a weird person in a normal world and, more importantly, its about bokuto and akaashi. oh! also manga like chainsaw man and toilet bound hanako-kun!! and some webcomics as well too.
currently watching: the wall mostly but also dungeon meshi! and ive been trying to be up-to-date with the one piece anime!!
spicy/savory/sweet: sweet <3
relationship status: i was reading a bokuaka fic and i was crying. take a wild guess.
current obsessions: listening to Tokyo Calling and ATARASHII GAKKO! apparently and im starting to feel like reading the ending of Haikyuu!! which is probably a bad thing?? (im scared. i really dont want it to end :'((( )

For a character that is not trying to be an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, Benoit Blanc is the best modern Holmes.
They both hate rich people, don't deal well with men in power, have a soft spot for women who have been taken advantage of, useless with simple and silly things, get depressed when they don't have a case, gay.

benoit blanc movies are like the only thing i’ve seen that i (and apparently a lot of others) actually want to be a franchise. i want a dozen sequels. i want it to be something you can bring up as a possible conversation topic with an acquaintance. it feels very different

miles’ friends being comfortable with helen destroying the glass sculptures but being scared about her destroying the piano the furniture etc as a metaphor for rich people and their performative activism, being happy with the bare minimum but getting scared with real consequences and big measures oooooo i loveeeee that

i like thinking about different reasons phillip referred to his partner/husband by his (their?) last name, such as
1. (normal) it's a work thing and so he wanted to be as professional as he could be while covered in flour
2. (gay people) gay people nicknames are just like that sometimes. maybe phillip started calling him that before they got together and it just stuck
3. (gay people 2) it's fun when you're gay married to nod at each other and go "hello mr. blanc" "hello to you too mr. blanc" hehehehe same name go brrr :)
