Listen to me, boy. You will hear about sea slugs. You will enjoy sea slugs
Tumblr media
Costasiella kuroshimae / leaf sheep. Discovered off the coast of Japanese island Kuroshima in 1993, they can indirectly perform photosynthesis by absorbing chloroplasts from algae
Tumblr media
Cyerce nigricans. The cerata can be easily cast when disturbed. They can also swim by powerfully flapping said cerata when strongly stimulated. I think they look like butterfly wings!
Tumblr media
Jorunna parva / sea bunny. They are covered in papillae, which are fleshy protuberances used for sensory functions. It looks like fur!
Tumblr media
Glaucus atlanticus / blue glaucus. They are rarely seen, except during periods of on-shore winds which brings them and their prey into coastal waters. They are the most dangerous sea slug to handle, able to give humans a very painful and potentially dangerous sting
Tumblr media
Chromodoris lochi / loch's chromodoris. They are spongivores, and prefer being on the underside of overhangs on rocky reefs. Their distribution is widespread in the Indo-Pacific. Everyone I show sea slugs to seems to love this little guy
Tumblr media
Dirona albolineata / white-lined dirona. A translucent predator that often eats bryozoans and small snails. They generally reside on rocks and sometimes mud in the intertidal. Pretty little things, they remind me of shards of glass
Tumblr media
Phidiana hiltoni / Hilton's Aeolid. They are known for being quite aggressive, often biting and fighting other aeolids, which is so real of them. They always reminded me of lit matches
Tumblr media
Acanthodoris lutea / orange-peel doris. Its bright aposamatic colouration is a warning to predators of its distasteful toxicity. They also notably smell of sandalwood! You don't understand. I NEED to hold one
Tumblr media
Nembrotha kubaryana / dusky nembrotha. They use the toxins in their prey ascidians to defend themselves against predators. The toxins are stored in their tissues then released in a slimy defensive mucus when alarmed. Nembrotha kubaryana are well-known for their neon appearance
Tumblr media
Phyllodesmium poindimiei / Spun Of Light. It's primarily nocturnal and can cast its cerata for protection. Anyway, can we all agree that Spun Of Light is the most awesome name for a sea slug ever? I mean, look at it. That's a sea slug spun of light if I've ever seen one
Conclusion: sea slugs are the creatures ever

Happy Nudibranch Nursday!! :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's Nudibranch is the Orange-Peel Doris! Actually the cutest name I've ever heard, it fits so well. As with most nudibranchs, they display aposematic coloration, which is a strategy used by many organisms to signal to predators that they are dangerous and not worth eating. Think poison dart frogs.
Fun fact: apparently these guys smell like sandalwood :]

favorite beast?
sea slug.
My favorites are the sea bunny (Jorunna parva):
Tumblr media
Sea lemon, which can refer to both Doris montereyensis:
Tumblr media
youtube
or Peltodoris nobilis (which curiously apparently smells very similar to an actual lemon when handled, which is funny considering it is also roughly the same size and shape as a lemon):
Tumblr media
and the Orange Peel/Sandalwood Doris (Acanthodoris lutea), which, like the sea lemon, also has a smell when handled. Although this one apparently smells like sandalwood. I have no idea why these slugs are so smelly.
Tumblr media
Side note: while looking for pictures to include I stumbled on this website called "The Slug Site" which has a "Opisthobranch (Sea slug) of the Week!" page that appears to still be going strong.
Also, The Sea Slug Forum which has a lot of good info about sea slugs in general. If tumblr ever goes down you can find me here.

Happy sea slug day! Here's some sea slug Sun doodles from various places, he has a working colour palette now!
Doodles are from session 25 of the DCA weekly magma, a week of AUs magma event from a little while back (testing to see what he would look like without the dot eyes) and a sneaky little guy with a tiny slice of cake from the Reveal-versary collab!
For those curious this design of a sea slug Sun is based on the orange-peel doris (Acanthodoris lutea) sea slug, so he's a mix of orange, reds, yellows and browns with a hint of white for the little bit of fluff on the end.

Do you have a favorite sea slug :0
Tumblr media
This may or may not be predictable, but the Leaf Sheep is SO cool to me. First of all, they just look really cute and that will honestly do it for me. And they're one of the only little creatures to use algae to photosynthesize? Banger creature. Not to mention sheep are just... plain one of my favourite animals anyway. Their cerata (the leaf-looking appendages) are so!! Pretty!! I have such an urge to pet it. But let me also ramble a tiny bit about other sea slugs
The Orange-Peel Doris is so incredibly shaped imo, it lights my brain up like a christmas tree
Tumblr media
It's like a soap I'm resisting to bite. I know nothing about this creature, but I want to hold it. It means the world to me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I just discovered the Cyerce Nigricans minutes prior to answering this and I think it's a neat little fella
Thank you so much for asking that, I've been biting through a floorboard over sea slugs the past few days

“Good morning!” Swede hummed, digging his fingernails into the skin of the orange Roach had tossed at him in place of a greeting. It was supposed to be his breakfast. Something about preventing… Well, he’d forgotten what it was, exactly. Probably not important.
Crouching down by the small nook, a splendidly fresh web greeted him. A light tap of his finger against one of the taut threads saw a dash of movement as the spider who occupied it hurried out to find whatever food had stumbled across her trap. Unfortunately, once again, she’d been tricked.
“You are looking well today. Nice and plump.” The Swede nodded as he tucked the orange peel into his pocket to be swiftly forgotten about. He placed the fruit just below the web next to another one. It was older, notably dried with a small edge of mold beginning to creep in.
“Captain says we will be going by some islands today. Lots of flies, I bet.” He would speak in Swedish so as to keep their little arrangement a secret from the rest of the crew but, unfortunately, spiders didn’t speak Swedish.
He broke one of the segments free and carefully tore it open to reveal the fragrant insides. Perfect bait.
“Now remember. No telling.” A sticky finger was held up in front of the spider as she delicately rubbed two of her legs together. “You must stay hidden.” It was devious of him, really. No one else on the ship had been able to smuggle an animal companion on board without Captain Bonnet noticing but it had been weeks and he was still none the wiser about the Swede’s eight-legged little secret.
Scooping the old orange up and paying little mind to what might be squirming inside, the Swede gave a cheerful little wave to his spider and rose to his feet. As he tossed the moldy fruit out of a porthole on his way past he couldn’t help but congratulate himself again on just what a sneaky bastard he truly was.  --
Everyone gets one pet headcanon and mine's that the Swede has a little spider he leaves his oranges by to lure flies near. He thinks he's Very Sneaky about it. A. diadematus for no reason beyond the fact that they're my fave orb weavers. Her name is Doris. :)
