Whatever you do, don鈥檛 think of 36 year-old Steve hearing the Placebo cover of Running Up That Hill and for the first time actually getting the song. It hits and he thinks of Eddie and, god, he鈥檇 love this, and his eyes are hot and wet and he鈥檚 pulling over onto the shoulder of the road and he can鈥檛 stand it, his borrowed time on the back of someone who he could have鈥攇od, he should have鈥攍oved bravely, he should have never let get left behind.

For years I thought the lyric "I'd make a deal with God and get him to swap our places" meant the singer wanted to make a deal to swap places with god itself, to become god, and I didnt realize this wasn't the dominant interpretation of the song. And I did and still do think my interpretation is very romantic.
