First month of the New Year and I've got a lot of fun ideas and plans for 2024! Let's dive right in!

XMACX MONTHLY UPDATES AND "COVERS"

First off, I'm introducing XMACX MONTHLY! It'll be a public post that -- ideally -- goes out on the first of every month. It'll include the schedule and plan for the coming month along with a cover image! I really miss drawing monthly character illustrations and I thought it'd be fun to also include non-patrons in polls so here's what I was thinking:

Everyone gets a chance to vote on the cover model for next month's issue, but patrons can vote on the outfit and/or theme for the cover!

For now, the characters I'd like to focus on drawing are my OCs, so the options for cover models will be limited to my OC roster. I have so many! I'd like to shine a light on them some time... And I was thinking, since magazines typically have "cover stories", OC Lore posts can be about the cover model! What are OC Lore posts? This leads me into my next topic...

TIER CHANGES

Here's what I'll be offering for each tier:

PROJECT LINE UP

Last year was a pretty busy year for me due to a lot of family stuff, work, and travel. I didn't have as many opportunities as I would have liked to draw my OCs and work on my personal projects. This year, I'll be cutting back on commissions and taking on other projects so I can focus more on my dreams of creating and sharing original stories. Here's the order in which I'd like to work on projects and a lil blurb about each:

Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate Voiced Update

Currently, I'm still working on adding the voiced lines and new artwork to Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate. Tentative release date will be some time in March for the public, some time in February for patrons.

Froot Basket White

The third and last installment of the Furuta Basketball "Froot Basket" series. It will be from Jordan's perspective and will be a direct sequel to Froot Basket Valentine. I'd like this project to be released episodically -- one new route every month or two, 7 routes total. I'm considering making it fully voiced...

Fleeting

My BL scifi horror visual novel! It follows Cadet Masa Takeshiro. It's been a while since I've worked on this project and I'd like to update the demo with everything new I've learned in the last few years. A "face lift" if you will in almost all aspects including writing and UI.

"Kaimana Comic"

It is currently unnamed but in-universe time-wise, it picks up some time after Fleeting. I don't expect to publish the comic at all this year. I'd just like to start thumbnailing it.

Other Projects

I have some other smaller projects like that Dogsitter one I was working on. I'm saving those for when I get frustrated. Those will be my "cool off" projects.

Since Kai is like the default model and he's already shirtless, the Cover Story this month will be "What if Kai were a PKMN trainer?" LMAO. Prompted ONLY because I can't unassociate the backwards cap from Ash and his PKMN battles.

totally! there’s only a few in there right now lol it’s my dumping ground for little lingering paragraphs at the end of fics after i’ve finished them:

“You want a whole cork board of vile plans, or an evil experiments station?” Pollux scoffs, but it’s hardly a joke.

“Is there yarn connecting the evil plans?” Ortega asks and Pollux grimaces, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Yes. It’s orange and the papers are all about making a safe new life for myself where I won’t have to look over my shoulder and wonder when I’m going to be dragged back to a literal hell on earth. All terribly evil shenanigans.” Pollux shoots from the hip with biting words and Ortega cringes.

“Sorry...”

Trial and error until they figured out how to sleep together —several nights where one or the other was ushered off to the gues room or the couch. Half a dozen times where Ortega would get kicked in the ribs, or Pollux would wake in a sweaty start, too unsettled and jumpy to fall back asleep.

Pollux actually sleeps through the night without a nightmares most of the time now, only a few stray occasions where it’s not enough. It’s better than before—leagues better.

“Didn’t think I’d do it either, but when you’re a recovering drug addict, you’re kinda unceremoniously pushed into it.” He admits and Nat pauses, her silver rings no longer clicking as she pauses drumming her fingers on the counter. He watches the question bubble up and die before they reach her lips, brown eyes finally looking up at him.

“I-I’m sorry, Pollux, I didn’t mean—“

“Don’t...” He cuts her off with a wave of his hand, putting a thin smile on his lips. “It’s fine, really. I shouldn’t have said it so crassly, I apologize.” He picks his lip with his thumbnail.

Nat glances down and she shakes her head, taking a deep breath and letting it out. “You shouldn’t apologize either. I didn’t mean to pry.”

“You would’ve found out regardless, one way or another. I’d rather you hear it from me.” He tells her with that same tense smile, scratching his thumb against his chin and the sparse hairs there from not shaving for a few days. Nat slowly nods, looking back down at the book, eyes scanning across the pages, finding other dates like the one from before scattered about the month.

“It was during college...” He speaks again, his back now turned to her as he fusses about the stove once more, the smell of fresh tomato and herb reaching her nose. “I wasn’t well for a long time before that—college certainly didn’t help. Partying lead to alcohol, which lead to...other things. I just wanted to turn my brain off for a bit, stop all the,” He twirls his fingers around his head like mining gears spinning, “stuff in my head.”

He sighs and Nat waits, waits for him to stop or continue, still in her seat at the bar.

“It got bad. Ended up in places and people I shouldn’t have been with. They got me into a lot of trouble.” Pollux chews his lip and he turns back to face Nat. Grey eyes looking over her shoulder at something she can’t see, like a memory playing on repeat in front of his eyes.

“Woke up one morning, in a dumpster of all places, with Mum bawling her eyes out.” His lips thin until their lost against his pale skin, his freckled cheeks and he crosses his arms over his chest, shoulders hunching.

“At four am? Breaking a mirror?” There’s annoyance poking into his tone as he gestures back to the sad broken mirror, chunks still dropping to the wood floor like punctuation in the silence. Felix’s brow draws in as they dance around things Pollux won’t say.

“I couldn’t sleep and this tires me out.”

Pollux provides, refusing to spare a glance anywhere but at the ground. He still catches as Felix’s posture tenses and Pollux clamps his mouth shut, biting the inside of his cheek. He’s digging himself into the ground now and he knows it.

“You don’t have to lie to me, Pollux...” Felix speaks quietly, a quiet little ache behind his words, enough to pull on the aching under his ribcage, draw his eyes to look him. Felix meets his eyes and there’s a silent plea there, a glow in his amber eyes begging him to tell him the truth.

“It’s not...” Pollux starts and trails off, catching his teeth on his lower lip to keep him from trembling. “I just...don’t wanna talk about it. I can’t talk about it.” He finally whispers, eyes fixed on the ground, bare feet staring back up at him.

He could shout out every single deep seated, rage filled memory stuck behind his eyes--stuck between his teeth--and make it all feel better. Maybe it wouldn’t feel like drowning in his own lungs, or feel like scratching his own skin off when the dreams crawl under his skin, burrowing down deep. But he can hardly admit that it hurts, pain that sitting in his skull and it closes around his throat, choking the words out of him until they’re a strangled jumbled mess. Even now the hand clenches around his neck, keeping it locked away tight.

“You don’t have to not touch them....” Pollux says softly, quietly. He doesn’t look up at Ortega, feeling his eyes on him instead. “You’ve already done it.” He glances at his still bare arm and further down across his stomach. Orange lines spiraling from the barcode out, still shiny and slick as ever.

“I know.” Ortega says softly and Pollux looks up, finding his eyes on the same spot on his arms. Pollux doesn’t flinch as his eyes wander up his arm and down his chest. It’s different than any other look someone has had for his body—examining yes, but for different reasons.

Pollux wonders to himself exactly what he imagined under his clothes before this, if it was always picture perfect skin. Were their scars? Terrible markings of self conducted surgery, the hurt he’d been through? Was this the body he expected wrapped up under layers of clothing and secrets?

“What did you expect to find?” He speaks before he can stop himself, words running out in a rush of breath. Ortega’s eyes snap to his and he has the decency to look guilty for having been staring.

Better than everyone else before that’s seen them.

“Well...” Ortega half chuckles, staring off at a point just above his head. “Beyond the obvious, I don’t know...I mean, I knew you had...” He waves his hand around and Pollux chuckles a bit, glancing down at his chest.

“Yeah I get it.” A smile pulls at the corner of his lip.

Ortega nods. “But...I don’t know what I expected. Not this, but who does?”

Pollux looks up at him and his brow is scrunched together, confusion plain on his face, mouth trying and failing to the words he wants. Like he’s still not sure what this means for him--what any of it means. Navigating the new--secrets kept for a decade now breathing in the space between them.

“I don’t hate it.” He almost reaches out, fingers almost touching his shoulder and Pollux doesn’t pull away, lets his hand hover, an almost touch.

Pollux catches his hand. Soft, the faint static of the emitter against his palm, narrow wires under the skin. Splaying his fingers and he presses them against his chest, above the hollow where his heart sits. Hand warm against his cold skin, a pleasant feeling as it spreads out across his skin, across the tattoos. Ortega doesn’t pull his hand away, his fingers lingering and his thumb brushes against a swath of tattoos.

“I expected them to feel different...” Ortega mumbles and Pollux shrugs, lips pursing into a thin line

“I don’t hate you Pollux.” He says softly.

Raven has always prided herself on her work ethic. She didn’t come from much, her parents did not plan on having a child which about described her relationship with them, and she worked part-time jobs ever since the goverment allowed her to. (Since they put her in the system and the system failed her, she felt like she could pretty much do whatever she wanted to the system. So sometimes she repaid the cards they dealt her by doing some not so legal hacking into college databases to slightly change rich frat boy GPA’s and make some extra cash.)

It paid off, because now Raven works for NASA and she didn’t even apply for the job. They asked her to come work for them. Who can say NASA asked them to come work for them? Raven Reyes can. Why? Because she is a certified genius who worked her way through high school, and college, and a master degree, and still managed to look halfway attractive, get in thirty minutes of exercise a day and keep a semi-active social life throughout it all.

She loved her job. She did, but—but it also meant long days, a lot of overtime, even more time spend on business trips and conference calls. If it wasn’t for her boyfriend Zeke working in the same building as her, she’s pretty sure she would never see him either since she barely ever goes home. She just happened to luck out and get the most amazing, understanding and supportive friends in the universe.

Besides, after spending half her life ‘being friends’ with Finn—who fucked her over and ghosted her after mere nine days apart at different colleges—Raven has come to learn what real friendship is. Emori tags her in a meme at least every other day, Harper brings over fresh vegetables from her and Monty’s garden whenever she looks extra pale and Clarke dutifully keeps her up to date on all her favorite shows she has zero time to watch. They’re as real as it gets.

Hence, when things start to cross over from a strong work ethic to borderline workaholic slash inevitable burn-out and her boss Sinclair forces her to take two weeks off, she is disappointed when the first three people she asks to hang out on her first free Saturday night that year already have plans. They barely hear from her in months beside a quick ‘what’s up’ in their group chat before she falls asleep on her couch every Saint Glinglin and they have the audacity to not keep their nights free in case she might ask them to hang out sometime? Assholes.

Since Emori and Murphy are out of town (probably robbing a house or something, she still doesn’t know what they do in their free time), and Harper and Monty have dinner with her parents, Clarke is up next. Raven texts her asking what she is doing that weekend, opening up a bottle of wine before padding over to her living room without a glass. She deserves the entire thing. Raven starts up Netflix on her smart TV while she waits for her friend to reply.

Twenty minutes deep into an episode of Homeland, her phone buzzes annoyingly on the armrest.

CLARKE [8:51 PM]:

who’s number is this?

RAVEN [8:54 PM]:

very funny griffin. drinks on saturday?

It takes a surprisingly long time for Clarke to answer her text, even though she isn’t a notorious bad back-texter unlike her boyfriend. One time like two years back, Raven asked Bellamy if he wanted to chip in on Murphy’s birthday present and he still hasn’t replied to this day. She’s pretty sure he isn’t even aware of the fact iMessage exists.

Raven has almost single-handedly finished off a bag of Cheetos before her phone buzzes again. She unlocks her phone to find a photo of a pregnancy test staring back at her, balanced precariously on what she assumes is Clarke’s knee, like the night terrors she used to have in middle school, terrified to end up like the other girls in her neighbourhood, sure a boy even looking at her could knock her up.

RAVEN [9:08 PM]:

so no drinks then???

The reply comes faster this time, Raven sure that Clarke was just jumping for her to something. Anything.

CLARKE [09:09 PM]:

i just found out and my first instinct was to grab a bottle of beer, i’m fucked

She’s not sure what Clarke wants from her here—that one always had more up her sleeve than expected—a congrats or a condolences, so she settles on the safe middle of comic relief.

RAVEN [9:10 PM]:

who’s the father?

CLARKE [09:10 PM]:

seriously?

RAVEN [9:11 PM]:

what? thought you two went to that swingers club the other month

CLARKE [09:14 PM]:

that was a teacher’s conference. he begged me to come

RAVEN [9:15 PM]:

i thought YOU begged HIM to come and now we’re in this whole mess?

A reply doesn’t come for two minutes, and then three, and when the clock ticks closer to five minutes, Raven decides to dial her number. It switches over to Facetime, but the screen is black, static commotion of the phone being moved around the only sound between their two devices for a good ten seconds. Finally, she asks, “Clarke?”

“I didn’t plan for this, Rave,” is the first thing out of her mouth, and Raven has to bite back a smile. Clarke is such a in-the-closet neurotic mess and she missed it. The screen turns very bright, then finally she can make out her friend. From the looks of it, she is on the floor in her bathroom, mascara smudged lightly under her eyes, wavy hair a mess on top of her head. “I haven’t even finished school yet. My NCLEX exam isn’t until next month—“

“Sound like perfect timing to me,” Raven snorts, keeping her tone very bored. Is this all she has? Are these her best arguments? She’s off her game. “You’ll ace the exam, get a few months of nursing experience at the hospital and then you can go on maternity leave. Your mom owns the surgical ward, I’m pretty sure she can make it happen.”

She watches Clarke draw her knees up to her chest, resting her forehead on top of them for a moment before looking back up at her phone. She does look wrecked. Raven hesistates for a second, then inquires, “Have you told him?”

“No,” Clarke replies, and then she is quiet for another second. She sounds softer this time, “What if he doesn’t want this?”

Raven almost cackles out loud. That loser would do anything for her, even if he didn’t want a baby with her—which seemed very unlikely—he would probably go to his grave swearing it was all he ever wanted. Besides, Bellamy has a few years on Clarke, is a well-known mother hen and is practically smitten with his sister’s toddler. (The only pictures he ever posts on social media are either of Clarke, his sister, that bratty little Octavia look-alike, or the three of them together—which was probably Nirvana by his definition.) He was more than ready, Raven’s sure that his old man primal hormones are just off the charts.

“Fat chance,” Raven settles on, instead of manic laughter because she’s a good friend, eyebrows practically disappearing into her hairline. “You’re talking about Bellamy Blake? The same Bellamy Blake who, when you introduced him to me and I told him I would kick his ass if he ever hurt you, said he couldn’t wait to have your babies someday?”

Clarke scrunches up her nose in disbelief, and Raven wonders if she needs to get her sight checked. Does she not see how that buffoon looks at her? “He said that?”

“Yep,” Raven drags out, seemingly unimpressed.

“He was drunk,” she argues, brushing her off as she runs a hand through her tangled blonde hair.

“That makes it more true, Clarke, not less,” Raven replies without skipping a beat, can’t help but sound a little tiny bit judgemental just because of who she is as a person. There’s more silence, Clarke chewing on her thumbnail as she stares off in the distance and Raven sighs, softening her voice. “No offense, but why are you complaining to me about this, babe? It isn’t like you to be this insecure.”

Was this not the Clarke Griffin who marched up to their arrogant orange-President-affliated professor and told him he might be an art teacher, but she was an artist? It was a popular meme around their college for weeks, black sunglasses and a animated blunt photoshopped onto her yearbook picture and plastered around the halls. The same Clarke Griffin who punched through a glass window because racist campus police let her go and took Monty into a interrogation room alone after catching the both of them with some weed brownies and still has the scar to prove it? Was she not the Clarke Griffin who got everyone to sign a petition to get Kyle Wick kicked out of school when he tweeted out a sexually suggestive picture of Raven?

“Because you know he’ll be excited,” she presses, aggrevated, blue eyes dark as she stares at her camera as if she can stare straight into Raven’s soul. “And I can’t break his heart and tell him that—”

“That what?” Raven cocks an eyebrow, figuring it’s time for some though love now. “You dont want a baby?”

“No—“ She tries to get it, but Raven doesn’t relent, keeps pressing, “That you don’t want his baby?”

“No!” Clarke blurts out harshly, cutting her off as her eyes brim with tears. “That I didn’t plan for this!” She swallows tightly, and Raven just watches her, chest heaving up and down erraticly, blue eyes darting from left to right as she tries to get her thoughts together. “You know what happened when I started medical school, why I had to drop out,” her voice finally breaks, lip trembling. “This time, I was going to better. I was going to do it right.”

“You had a nervous breakdown, Clarke,” Raven snaps, tired of the sugarcoating. She was so hard on herself, and Raven still feels the slighest pang of guilt at that because she used to encourage that quality in her, held her to even higher standards. Maybe at first because she was jealous of her, of the golden girl who got everything handed to her. When she realized that wasn’t true, it was more because Raven knew she could be brilliant. Then after everything went down, she realized Clarke had already been brilliant all along. “You were making eighteen hour days, Lexa broke your heart and then your dad died in your arms. I think not having a breakdown over that would’ve qualified you as a sociopath.”

Clarke quickly wipes at the wetness trailing down her cheek, like she is trying to keep Raven from seeing, hugging her knees closer to her chest. Quietly, she sniffs, wondering, “What if it happens again?”

“It won’t. Because you’ve learned you can’t plan everything because life comes at you fast,” Raven says, authoratively, like she’s reading it from the pamphlet her therapist got them back then. “—and to communicate about how you’re feeling, what you’re thinking. Eat enough vegetables and sleep enough hours.”

Clarke takes a deep breath, wiping at her nose with the back of her hand as she lets herself nod. Raven can’t help but press, “Isn’t that what you and Bellamy use as foreplay? A good old fashioned emotional conversation?”

Clarke scoffs. “No, like talking shop doesn’t get you and Shaw going.”

Raven lifts a shoulder, indifferent. She’s not going to sit here and pretend like him being able to name every component of a Harvey Davidson motorcycle in alphabetical order doesn’t get her all hot and bothered.

Clarke wipes her palms on her jeans-clad thighs, chewing on the inside of her cheek. “What if I’m not any good at this?”

“Then the child will have the most awesome aunt to fall back on,” Raven smirks, and luckily, Clarke finally cracks a smile too. “You’re Clarke fucking Griffin. If this is something that you want—“ She drags out the last word, pausing to get her confirmation (she’s pretty sure it’s something she does want, deep down, but it doesn’t hurt to check before she rolls out the whole peptalk), and reluctantly, her friend nods, corners of her lips turned up almost shyly. “If it’s something that you want, you’ll succeed at it. You care about everyone, Clarke, to a fault.”

Raven finds herself smirking again, pretending to be half-distracted with re-tightening her brace. “And I know it’ll be hard to care about that baby knowing it’s Bellamy’s—“

“Shut up,” Clarke deadpans, and her eyes look brighter, clearer. Tentatively, her hand comes to rest on top of her lower belly, fingers flexing on top of her shirt for just a second. Raven can’t help but smile, happy for her friends. It’s what they deserve.

“You should really call him,” Raven pushes, pursing her lips satisfactory, “He’s going to be so salty you told me before him.”

“Probably,” Clarke snorts, just the slightest bit of nervousness flashing across her eyes before they soften as she says, “But, thanks, Rave. I’m glad to see NASA lets you out on probation every six months.”

“It’s NASA though,” she responds—a little boastful, because it’s NASA, she gets to be boastful—then stretches out her free arm. “Also, mocktails Saturday?”

Clarke beams. “Deal.”

(The next time Raven gets a text from Clarke, it’s a photo of a ring on her finger.)

Process and wip images for A House That Holds Long Limbs

Every so often I get questions about how I work, and I also enjoy reading about how other creators make things, so perhaps this might be interesting and useful to somebody out there too. I’ve talked about my process before but never really documented and shared it WHILE working on a project, so here you can see some of my thinking and decision-making (and poor habits lol) a bit more immediately, alongside screenshots, photos and scans.

Very long, everything is below the cut, and apologies to people on mobile and anywhere else this goofs up.

One question I get a lot is “do you start with words or pictures when creating a comic?” I jump between both a lot. That said, I tend to lean more heavily on words when documenting ideas in the early stages of a project. This is because, for me:

Words pack a lot of punch in conveying detail quickly. They work better when I need to quickly communicate something extremely specific to future me. I’m a sloppy drawer, so my sketches tend to make future me squint and go, “What the hell was this supposed to be?!”

A great deal of my thinking and planning is done during crowded commutes. It’s more convenient to jot notes on my phone than to whip out my sketchbook and a pen.

(For a while I thought it’d be awesome to have some sort of app where I can type notes AND have an accompanying thumbnail sketch, and be able to drag them around or break them out into more or fewer pages. At one point years ago I thought about creating a custom app... but ultimately too lazy/busy and my current process works well enough. If anyone wants to take this idea and run with it, please feel free to do so and just let me know about it so I can try it haha.)

I usually start with a few lines summarizing the gist of the idea, enough that’s recognizable and I don’t forget the important things to build off from. From there, I start point-form outlining the stuff that needs to happen, structuring them into key scenes/parts. These scenes are not always fleshed out in order - I just add to them whenever I have ideas for that part.

Long Limbs, for example, had a progression like this:

Overall story idea: “horror story with rokurokubi, key plot point(s) happens, the end.” (There was a bit more detail than this, obviously, but we’re avoiding spoilers here.)

Initial description for Part 1 of the story: “Hokushin lured to go to somewhere. Separated from Raizen. HOW??????”

After letting it simmer for while, a solution: “Hokushin annoyed at Raizen. Opportunity for him to get away and go do his own thing.”

Gradually more detail: “Stranger invites him to go to this place to look into something/maybe has a paid job that needs to be done and Raizen is busy goofing off or whatever.”

Problem. I couldn’t resolve this chain of thought to my satisfaction. What kind of task/job can someone convince Hokushin to do on his own when he doesn’t know this person/it seems questionable? And how long will the conversation need to run to establish this as believable?

This was starting to get convoluted and I was getting annoyed because it was turning into a burden in being able to continue the story AND IT WASN’T EVEN THAT IMPORTANT. I decided to abandon this path of thinking, and left the entire story for a while.

Much later (like months?), I had an idea: “Mysterious person drops something, piques Hokushin’s curiosity.” Aha! Hokushin’s own initiative. Simple and plausible enough. HOORAY NO MORE THINKING. LET’S DRAW.

Then I realized, oh shoot, I need to figure out who this mysterious person is and what they dropped. More time passes. And so on… in between I’m always working on other things, so there’s no real creator’s block - at some point I start thinking about this comic again, and ideas work themselves out to some decent level of satisfaction and link together. Thanks subconscious!

Eventually, enough key scenes are fleshed out that I feel confident enough to turn this into a real thing. At present, for example, not all scenes in Long Limbs are totally worked out, but I’ve got enough that I ran ahead with Part 1.

This is a close-to-final version. The === on top is just to separate this from notes on other stories or ideas. This is the beginning of the document, but this document actually includes many other notes and stories for North Bound. I delete them as I finish and post the pages. Every so often I wonder if I should bother keeping them, but they’ve been refined throughout the process and usually don’t bear much resemblance to the original jotted notes anymore. Long Limbs was originally planned to be a later story in North Bound, but I got especially excited about it and fleshed it out further than the others. When I reviewed the earlier stories, I didn’t think there’d be a big continuity or reader experience issue if this was finished and posted first. So I moved the messy notes for this story to the top of the document.

The page breakdown for the script is done by me generally picturing in my head how I might want the scene to go and how much action I might be able to fit on the page for good effect. I’ll sometimes start paginating without thumbnails, and sometimes will do both side by side (thumbnail and update pagination in tandem).

As you might imagine, pagination frequently changes. For example, you’ll see the script above is 9 pages instead of 10.

The original script for this section was broken up into maybe 4-6 pages, with 5-7 being more condensed.

When I started thumbnailing, I found it felt too cluttered and moved too fast.

So I stretched out the part of Hokushin and the mystery girl exchanging glances, and added pages to be able to create a (hopefully) more cinematic feel and really focus on the reason they catch each other’s eye - the bandages on their necks.

I then went back to the Google Doc and updated the script to line it up better.

I was also tweaking the dialogue at the same time and didn’t want to forget any key phrasing I liked. Dialogue is another thing I get really hung up over, often changing words up to the last second. (Sometimes this is because I messed up the size of the speech bubble, if I’m lettering on the computer...)

Thumbnails:

Pretty close to the final in this case - mainly because the sequence is pretty simple and straightforward and not many people are involved. I keep my thumbnails very crappy and rough so that I don’t get upset later when I can’t redraw something as good as the thumbnail. Bottom right was a quick attempt at designing the mystery girl.

Once I think the thumbnails are good enough - translation: I get impatient and just want to start drawing - I proceed to pencils for the actual page.

Throughout all this, I’m repeatedly reviewing script and thumbnail and playing sequences out in my head and then trying to figure out how to better direct the “camera” and the action. I may go back to the script and the thumbnails even as I’m finetuning the actual page if I encounter issues. You can see in both the script and the thumbnails that there are still deviations in the dialogue and the art from the final. Here are a few examples:

Page 3: The panels were originally 1) the setting, 2) Hokushin with his arms folded, 3) Raizen laughing, 4) we see that Hokushin is watching Raizen. After reviewing the thumbnail, I felt it’d be a better setup to flow into the scene if I switched panels 2 and 3. That’s closer to how you’d experience it in real life, or how it might be directed in a shot sequence: you enter an area/place, you hear the sound of some guy’s loud laughter filling the air, then the camera zooms up to the annoyed expression of this one particular dude and you see he’s staring at the laughing guy. Moving from bigger ambience to smaller details around the room.

Page 7: The girl was originally turning in the other direction (hard to tell because I redrew it right on top of the original sketch lol). However, this meant all the directional action would be pointing to the right - Hokushin is facing the right, and when he leaves the bar he’s angling towards the right side of the page. Facing the direction that readers will read in gives a sense of driving the action forward, while facing the opposite direction provides a bit of a mental stop. (This is something from Scott McCloud that always stuck with me.) So, I flipped the girl around.

Page 8: Script has Hokushin going “What’s this?”. When thumbnailing, I thought, “obviously it’s self-evident he’s wondering what this is when he picks it up”. It added nothing to the panel, and the speech or thought bubble would have interrupted the smooth action of him picking up the paper. So, axed.

The damn friggin’ bar and gambling: You’ll see the script mention this, and at one point I actually had the guy standing across from Raizen saying “Is this guy drunk?” I’m actually not sure if they’re in a bar or if Raizen is drinking, but neither were important to the actual story because I just needed Raizen and Hokushin to be in a place where Raizen could hang out with humans and be stupid. So I dropped these details. This is mainly because I ran into historical research problems about bars and alcohol during the Kamakura period (more on that near the end of this post), and this was the only way to stop myself from getting hung up on trying to make it “perfect” and “correct” and just get it done.

Drawing the actual pages. This part is fun!

I don’t have very steady hands and I get very anxious about messing things up, so inking always takes me the longest. (I also get distracted easily, e.g., ink two lines and then surf tumblr for ten minutes lol). I’ve improved a lot since I started drawing comics much more frequently a couple years ago, and my choice of tools and style has helped a lot (I lean to variable lines and sketchy style, which is more forgiving than, say, a very precise art style with fixed-width pens) but I still get nervous at this stage.

I’m very lazy so I usually stick with one tool for inking. For Long Limbs I tried to effort more and actually used three. Right to left: Sailor fude de mannen for panel borders and text, Muji pen for artwork (0.4 because that was the only size available at the store when I went to get my refill), Pentel pocket brush for filling in blacks. I refill the fude de mannen and the pocket brush with fountain pen inks.

I usually ink panel borders first, then speech bubbles, then everything else. I hop all over the place and pages are generally in varying stages of completion. I also sometimes add in some more text lines because it seems like a good idea at the time - Hokushin’s complaint on page 3 about how he should have left Raizen when he got into a fight with a fish-seller in a previous story, for example. Sometimes these work, sometimes I regret it later and edit it on the computer.

Cover thumbnails and pencil sketch:

The one in the page thumbnails was the original idea, but then I thought, “seems kinda cliched. Can I get a more interesting angle where he’s not looking straight at the viewer?” (OK, his eyes are covered, but you know what I mean.) I quickly tried a few other angles and compositions, didn’t like them and ended up going with pretty much the original idea, but more zoomed in.

In the thumbnails, you can see all my little x’s indicating “ehhhh I don’t like this”. I wanted something with a particular mood/atmosphere especially with all the hands and arms, and I was conflicted between zooming out (for more environment and more arms, and the focus on the “long limbs” part of the title) or having a tighter, more close up shot. Ultimately I think the latter works better as it conveys a sense of claustrophobia, and it’s more intimate which supports the idea of psychological horror. ALSO IT’S SEXY (maybe???). The end.

Other random thoughts:

I took a lot of heart/inspiration/motivation from Togashi’s last few volumes of Yu Yu Hakusho to keep the backgrounds as lazy - I mean sparse - as possible and also speech bubbles over plain backgrounds lmao. I think it takes a lot of confidence (or maybe laziness) to be so minimalist and restrained, and it’s an impressive and economical way of working. I was always impressed that when reading those pages of his for the first time, the lack of detail never really bothered me - you had everything you needed for your brain to comfortably fill in the gaps and complete the sense of narrative and story progression, and there are still visual flourishes when the situation calls for it. So I’m trying to bring a bit of that tighter philosophy in.

Research. I struggle a LOT with not getting bogged down by details, especially when it’s something “just” for fun or “just” a fancomic. I have very lovely and helpful friends and family who every so often patiently allow me to whine and bounce things off of them, help me look things up, and/or tell me when I’m getting myopic about stuff. For all the North Bound comics, finding quick and useful historical references for the time period has been a challenge. There’s a ton about aristocracy and warriors but very little about the ordinary/common people, not surprisingly. I frequently question my instincts about what makes sense because I tend to automatically draw on similar/equivalent Chinese culture (there was certainly lots of cross-over, but not always appropriate/relevant) or Edo period references (wrong time frame! Too far in the future). I often end up losing a ton of time trying to find something with roundabout searches, and then give up and look at other comics I have close enough to the time period. And then referencing those and compounding whatever historical errors they have in them. (e.g., “Well if it was good enough for Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix it’s good enough for this rando fancomic!”) I just would like historical/subject matter experts to know I did try...

ATLANTIC CITY — Frankie Edgar made a memory he hopes will last a lifetime Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall.

But it wasn’t the clear victory over Cub Swanson in the semi-main event of the UFC Fight Night card — though that was certainly a positive experience. Instead it was seeing his kids run up to congratulate him after the fight.

It had been 11 years since the Toms River native last fought in the Garden State, so the opportunity for his young children to see him compete in front of a hometown crowd was one he had to seize. His family was present throughout the fight week activities, with son Santino even joining his father on the mat at the open workouts.

“This was special,” Edgar said. “Having my kids there was the best thing for me. Having them run up to me after is something I will remember forever. Hopefully they remember it forever.

“And what better place than in my hometown? I’ve been coming to Atlantic City for a long time. I’ve been seeing people compete in this building for a long time. So to be able to do that was something special.”

“Jersey, I love you baby,” Edgar told the Atlantic City crowd of 9,541 mixed martial arts fans that chanted “Frank-ie Ed-gar” throughout the bout. “I love you. TR, I know you are in the building.”

“My coach always tells me never stop,” Edgar said. “It’s not just boxing, it’s not just wrestling. It’s not like after a wrestling exchange you stop, or after a boxing exchange you stop. You try to mix it all together and I’m able to do that.”

Edgar last fought in New Jersey at UFC 78 in November 2007 — an unanimous decision victory over Spencer Fisher.

This time, however, Edgar was fighting with a heavy heart. He lost both his father and grandfather in the last month.

“It wasn’t easy,” Edgar said of the last few weeks of juggling real-life heartache and pre-fight preparations. “Death is never gonna be easy. I think this kind of helped me, if anything. It kind of kept my mind off of it in a way and it gave me something to let my energy out on.”

In the main event, Kevin Lee took out Edson Barboza in a key lightweight clash. The doctors advised the referee to stop the bout after examining the cuts around Barboza’s eyes, awarding Lee the TKO victory at 2:18 of the fifth round.

Lee grounded the flashy Barboza — a crowd favorite because the Brazilian moved to Toms River years ago — in the first two rounds. He was so dominant, he earned 10-8 scores in both rounds from all judges.

In the third round, it immediately became clear why that had been a good strategy as Barboza connected on a highlight reel spinning heel kick that left Lee wobbly legged. But Lee survived.

“That’s one of those things about being in this game, especially with one of the best strikers in this division: You can’t take your mind off of him for a second, and I feel that I did that,” Lee said. “But that’s part of my complete game. I can take a shot and I can keep pushing forward. And that’s what a true champion has to do.”

In the fourth, he went back to the strategy of grounding Barboza, much to the dismay of the crowd. But it was effective and helped Lee earn that round on the scorecards and set up the fifth round stoppage.

“I said before this fight, mental strength was going to be the key,” Lee said. “I wanted to go all five rounds and show my complete game. I feel I did that. I did a little southpaw, out-boxed him and stopped him in the fifth.”

In other bouts on a night when the UFC announced a $923,720 gate, Justin “Big Pretty” Willis nearly finished Chase Sherman in the first round of their heavyweight throwdown. He dropped Sherman and pounced and delivered a flurry of hammer fists. But Sherman somehow survived and the two big men never delivered that level of excitement again for the remainder of the bout.

In the end, Willis earned the unanimous decision by scores of 29-28 across the board.

“He was just trying to survive, but I’ve got to do better next time and finish,” Willis said. “I have to throw more punches and not just concentrate on knockouts. I need to focus on picking them apart the whole time. I got a little one-dimensional. That’s OK, because I got the win.”

New York’s David Branch made short work of a surging Thiago Santos, connecting with a looping right overhand that crumpled Santos. Branch followed up with some hammer fists before it was called off at 2:30 of the very first round.

Branch said Santos was difficult to get at, so the middleweight had game planned on the looping strikes.

“He’s tricky to get to,” Branch said. “We had to loop those punches, because he was expecting us to throw them right up the middle. He’s a bruiser. Any time he goes in there, he’s going to go out on his shield or knock you out.”

Branch earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his stunning victory.

Fighting out of Long Island, bantamweight Aljamain Sterling put in a crisp performance of his own in handing Brett Johns his first MMA loss.

Sterling was far more active with strikes and leg kicks and was pummeling Johns from his back as the bout ended. He earned the unanimous decision, much to the delight of the crowd that frequently chanted “Al-ja” throughout the fight.

“It was about picking the key moments and getting the right timing to get into those striking battles,” Sterling said. “In my last fight, it’s unlike me to rush in. I got caught. I just went back to being me and doing what I do best.”

Sparta’s Jim Miller started off the main card in what was a record-tying 29th appearance in the Octagon – sharing the mark with Michael Bisping. Unfortunately, his landmark bout was short-lived.

Miller found some openings for strikes against the taller Dan Hooker and tripped him two minutes in for the takedown. But at the three-minute mark, Miller stepped right into a knee that sent Miller falling backward to the mat like a tree. Hooker followed up with a strike, but it was unnecessary. “The Hangman” had the knockout.

After the bout, Hooker said how much he respected the New Jersey native, calling him a legend and drawing applause from the pro-Miller crowd and an acknowledgement from Miller himself as he returned to the locker room.

“It feels pretty surreal at the moment,” Hooker said. “I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet. I understand this sport. I’ve been through every high and low in this game. I know that could have just as easily been me. It’s a coin toss when you go in there.

“So with every victory — especially a victory like this — I’m just appreciative. He could have caught me with one of those overhand lefts and I’d be on the ground.”

After the bout, Long Island’s Matt Serra was announced as an inductee into this year’s UFC Hall of Fame class.

In the final preliminary bout, New York’s Ryan LaFlare earned a straight-forward unanimous decision over Alex Garcia in a welterweight matchup that drew the ire of the crowd for its extended periods of groundwork.

“It played out pretty much as I expected,” LaFlare said. “I saw everything he threw at me. I don’t think he hit me with one clean punch.”

There were fireworks throughout the first round of the Merab Dvalishvili vs. Ricky Simon bantamweight bout. Dvalishvili dropped Simon with a right and spent much of the round chasing Simon. Simon did fire back toward the end of the round.

After a more evenly matched second round, it came down to a thrilling conclusion to the third when Simon locked in a choke with approximately 55 seconds remaining in the bout. Dvalishvili thrashed and kicked but couldn’t fight his way free. Yet, he survived the round.

Or so it seemed. UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer informed the crowd that the referee called a stop to the fight at the conclusion of the third round, meaning Simon was awarded the TKO in a decision that was booed heavily in the arena.

“I got up, looked at his eyes and he was gone,” Simon said. “I sunk in a deep choke and he was out. I stood over his body and he was limp. He was flailing and then went limp.”

Dvalishvili said he wasn’t out, however. And if the judges scorecards had been counted, he would have won a split decision.

“When it was finished, I was just tired and stayed down,” he said. “I knew I had won. The doctors told me to stay down. I don’t know why they gave it to him. I feel I’m the winner. I didn’t lose this fight.”

The controversial clash earned both fighters the Fight of the Night bonus.

Luan Chagas tried a running knee seconds into his fight, setting the scene for looked like it might be a wild welterweight slugfest. But Siyar Bahadurzada caught his leg and sent him to his back to slow the action. Halfway through the round Chagas reversed it and took the back, looking for rear-naked chokes until the horn.

Things took a turn in Round 2, however, as Bahadurzada connected with a front kick to the body. As Chagas crouched over in pain from the body blow, Bahadurzada pounced with an uppercut to end Chagas’ night early.

“I’m the best fighter in this division,” Bahadurzada proclaimed in the cage after the fight, also inviting fans to come celebrate with him in the nearby Bally’s casino lobby after the fights. He also earned a Performance of the Night bonus.

As the first fighter with Garden State ties to head to the cage, Corey Anderson received a nice reaction from the fans in attendance. A “Cor-ey Ander-son” chant broke out as the fight began. Anderson responded by quickly bloodying Patrick Cummins in their light heavyweight clash. Far more precise with the striking, Anderson also mixed in two takedowns in the first round, including an emphatic double-leg with 50 seconds to go.

After two minutes of a more even Round 2, Anderson again scored with a big takedown. Cummins seemed powerless to defend it. He repeated it with 45 and 5 seconds to go, including balancing on Cummins’ back as he tried to get to his feet, which drew a roar from the crowd. He struck again 45 seconds into the third. Cummins never escaped the grasp and Anderson cruised to the easy unanimous decision, including two 30-26 scores.

“That went 100 percent according to the game plan,” Anderson said. “We knew the jab would dictate the pace. I could see his stuff coming because he isn’t as fast as my training partners. It was the perfect game plan. This was exactly what we asked for.”

As the crowd was still making their way from the nearby casinos and boardwalk, Tony Martin and Keita Nakamura were the first to the cage. Martin wasted little time in producing some swelling above Nakamura’s left eye in a fairly dominant first round. Martin continued with his advantage in the second, sailing several head kicks at Nakamura until he sought the takedown. Martin was ready, attempting a guillotine as time expired.

Martin was again on point with his strikes in the third round, showing little fear of his opponent’s offense. Nakamura again went for a late takedown only to find himself in a potential submission attempt. Martin took the unanimous decision with scores of 30-27 across the board.

“I thought it was a dominant performance,” Martin said in comments provided by UFC. “Next, I want someone who’s going to come after me and try to win the fight a lot more. I feel like he was more in survival mode once he felt the right hand. I hurt him a couple times and tried to jump on him, but heard my coaches telling me to calm down.”

Being trapped in her bed on her favorite holiday was never something Veronica believed she would be doing. Most of the time she was alone in their master suite, and it had become a rather lonely place to be. Yes, she had access to the internet, but she had never been the type to be a homebody. As the hours before the party approached, Veronica heard someone outside of their bedroom door talking to the guard. She recognized the voice to be Lily’s, and she pretended to be asleep as one of the family’s servants entered the room and placed something on her bed stand. Once the girl had left, Veronica moved to sit up and picked up the CD. She looked it over, and huffed as she forced herself to stand on her own two feet.

She had only been getting up whenever most of the compound was asleep, due to June’s strict rules that she was forced to follow whenever everyone was awake. The one time she had been caught by June had been enough to know not to deal with it again. She wrapped her robe around herself, and crossed the room to the television that they had placed in the room for her. She put the CD into the player, and took a step back to get a good view of the screen. As Damian’s voice filled the speakers, a knot rose into her throat. She absentmindedly placed a hand on her heart as she closed her eyes to listen more carefully. Veronica guessed this was Lily’s way of making up for Damian’s absence, and although it was a nice sentiment, it only reminded her even more that she was trapped. She turned off the CD quickly, and sunk into a chair by the large windows.

Veronica chewed on her thumbnail as she watched the scenery outside of her window, and took a deep breath. She must have dozed off, because whenever she awoke, it was dark outside and the house had came to life with noise underneath her. The party had started, and here she was: trapped like a princess in her tower. Outside the door, Veronica heard the guards talking amongst themselves, and a familiar name appeared on their lips. Her ears perked up at the sound of it, and she arose from her chair. She crossed the room to the door, and pressed her ear against the dark wood door, “..saw her come in with some brunette. She bee lined directly to the boss..” Veronica removed her ear from the door, and glanced at herself in a mirror that hung on the wall. She pursed her lips before her tongue ran across her top row of teeth.

She headed into her closet, where she grabbed the outfit she had planned on wearing to the party before her June house arrest. She went into the bathroom, and began getting dressed. Once she had pulled her skirt over top of her belly, she tied her hair up out of her face and put on a natural amount of makeup and a pair of earrings. She paused before leaving the bathroom, and coated her lips with a burgundy lipstick, knowing it was Damian’s favorite color. She went back into her closet, and slipped her feet into a low pair of heels. She would have worn taller, but she didn’t need to be wobbly, not tonight. She checked herself in the mirror again, and smiled to herself. Whenever she opened her bedroom door, the guard in front of it jumped. They clearly were going to stop her, but the look on her face seemed to remove the words from their mind.

She moved past them, and down the long stair into the main room. The decorations were beautiful, but there was no denying that Veronica had them all beat. People moved out of her way as she made her way toward the only person she wanted to see. Once she had made it to Damian, she wrapped her arm within his and smiled lovingly at him, all the while ignoring Daria in front of him. “You look lovely darling,” she told him quietly in his ear before finally bringing her attention to the girl in front of them. She had never officially met her, but she had enough information to recognize her. “Why, bless your heart, where are my manners? You must be Daria; Damian has told me a lot about you,” she reached out her hands and placed Daria’s in between them. She squeezed it gently, like a mother would, “I am Veronica. It is very nice to finally meet you.” She let go of her hand, and placed her own hand on Damian’s forearm.

Finn smiled warmly at his grandson’s date, and a low chuckle escaped his lips, “Well, I would hope he would be the perfect gentleman; I did raise him after all.” He glanced from her to Attie, a sharp look in his eye. He knew that his grandson knew this look well, and Attie nodded at him, “Why, of course.” Finn’s thoughts were cut off by a familiar voice. He blinked several times at the sound of it. He had only heard the voice in his dreams, and he thought that it might be possible that he was still. His gaze focused back into Attie, and he could tell by the look on the boy’s face that it was like he was seeing a ghost.

Finn tried swallowing the lump in his throat before he turned toward the voice, but he was met with the vision of an angel in front of him. He took a step back out of true disbelief, and his words left him. He held onto his own glass with both hands to stop them from shaking. Those blue eyes piercing into his soul, just like they used to, as if they could see every inch of him. Her brunette hair laid just how he remembered it, and it looked as if she hadn’t aged a single day since the last time he had saw her. He couldn’t stop himself from thinking about the day that he had gotten the news that she was gone.

Sitting in his den, Finn sipped on his coffee as he looked over the final drafts of the architecture of the home he was having built for Lily. They were to begin construction any day now, and he couldn’t wait to show it to her. His architect told him that it would take months to build, but he knew that things like this needed to take time to be perfect, especially for someone as perfectas she was. He stood from his spot in one of his leather armchairs, and moved to place the plans on his roller desk in the corner of the room. He heard a faint knock on his door, and he smiled to himself.

They had planned for her to visit him, to get her out of the house for a while. She was supposed to bring the young children with her, and he always had enjoyed their company as much as he enjoyed hers. He placed his coffee cup down on a coaster on the end table next to his chair, and made his way to the front door. He cleared his throat, and checked his hair in a mirror in the foyer. He straightened his coat, and opened the door with a smile upon his face. The smile faded as he was greeted by one of his informants. The look upon the boy’s face told him that he had news that wasn’t going to be pleasant. His jaw locked, “What is it boy?” The boy began to stutter over his words, and Finn’s hearing faded as he heard his heart pounding inside of his head.

The boy continued to stutter out apologies, and Finn just closed the door slowly. He turned around, and placed his back against the door’s hard oak. He slid down until he reached the floor, and stared off into nothingness for what seemed like hours. By the time he came to his senses, it was dark outside and tears stained his face and his shirt collar. He picked himself off of the ground, and held onto the wall as he made his way back into the den. His free hand gripped onto his chest, as it felt like his heart was tearing itself in two. Once inside the den again, he made his way over to the desk again. He opened the roller top, and grabbed the crystal bottle filled with the caramel colored liquid.

He picked up the matching glass, and his hands shook as he poured himself a glass. He sunk deep into his armchair, and took a sip from the liquid as he ran his fingers over the rim of the glass. He finished off his glass, and then several others. He looked over toward the coffee table, and picked up his revolver that sat upon it. He balanced the weight of it within his hands, and pressed the cool metal against his forehead. He closed his eyes at the feeling, and held it there. “Don’t you dare,” spoke her voice inside of his head. Tears began stream down his face once again. “But what am I without you?” his voice spoke out into the room. He saw her face in his mind, and his heart began to rip in his chest. He gripped onto his chest, and cried out from the pain as he threw his glass across the room. It hit the wall, and shattered glass and bourbon all over the blueprints that read “Casa di Gigli,” House of Lilies.

Finn, out of embarrassment of his silence, adjusted his vest, and cleared his throat. He blinked several more times before finally speaking, “Hello, do I know you?” He stood in disbelief that this woman was who he believed it to be, and he imagined that her figure would disappear and he would be greeted by someone else standing in front of him. Whenever it didn’t, the lump reappeared in his throat, and he turned ever so slightly to hand his glass off to Attie before he dropped it. Maybe he had enough to drink for the night. “Forgive me,” he told the ghost in a hard whisper, “but if this is a dream, I’d like to wake up now.” His gaze met hers, and he had to look away before he was overwhelmed by his emotions. He absentmindedly reached up to rub his chest, where his heart lay.

"June, June!" June turned toward the sound of her name being called. A guard walked swiftly toward her, trying not to draw attention to himself from the guests. She raised an eyebrow at him, as he made it to her and continued, "You have to come with me now." She nodded swiftly, and handed her glass and cigar to Albert. She followed after the guard with worry building up in the back of her mind. It was clear on where they were headed, but she hoped that she wouldn't be greeted with bad news once they got there. Once they rushed down the stairs toward the medical warx, June noticed something off. Tony was laying within a different bed he had been, and he was no longer hooked to his machines. "We found him on the staircase out cold. We thought he might have been trying to get upstairs, but we brought him back here so that it didn't make a commotion at the party," the guard explained as June began to check Tony's vitals.

June turned toward the guard, and told him that he could return to his rounds. Once he was gone, June took a deep, staggering breath, "You stubborn, old fool." She looked at where his IV had once been, and shook her head at the damage he had caused to himself by ripping it out. She cleaned the area of blood, and placed a bandage upon it. She perched beside of him on the bed, and cursed herself for wearing a dress to the party, due to how tight it was on her form while sitting. She ran a cool hand across Tony's cheek and forehead to get a feel of his temperature, and sat back to watch him for a moment before picking up his hand within her own. She began humming to break the silence, and studied his hand like she had never seen it before.

She had done this plenty of times throughout their life, but as the times changed, so did his hand. It got more wrinkles, and his hand tattoos had faded from the day he got them. What hadn't changed was the rough texture of his palm, or the weight of it in her own. She traced the details of it with her fingertips, continuing to hum softly to him. She lifted his hand to her face, and held it against it, closing her eyes. She was kicking herself for not being there whenever he woke up, but she wasn't going to leave his side again. She placed a gentle kiss on the palm of his hand, and whispered, "I'm so sorry." She could feel a traitorous tear fall down her cheek, as her voice broke, "I am so, so sorry."

Art blooms in new studio

Until a few months ago, Debbie Solan was co-owner with Paul Fernandes of Fusion Glass Company in La Mesa. Now she is the sole owner of Idea Field, a studio and shop where art of every kind can bloom.

The road bringing Solan to Idea Field has been a long one, but worth every moment. She grew up as the middle child of five in Dublin, Ireland. Times were difficult then, with money being tight for everyone there. But Solan found beauty in painting and coloring.

“I don’t remember a time when art wasn’t in my life. I come from a family of creators,” she said.

By the time she was in her teens, the Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick was her biggest inspiration. Solan developed what she calls “itchy feet,’ and at 19 years of age, she left Ireland and traveled throughout Europe for a number of years. She met many Americans along the way, so she decided to come see what America was all about.

“And then the age-old story. I met a guy and stayed. He remains one of my best friends to this day,” Solan said.

When she moved to San Diego, Solan took a part-time job at a real estate office. That is where she met Paul Fernandes. They both discovered they had a passion for art. Fernandes did stained glass as a hobby and took a glass fusing class. He asked Solan if she would be interested in helping him with the kiln.

Solan had already had experience with pottery kilns and thought that glass fusion would be worth looking into.

“We were enjoying experimenting with this wonderful medium and were creating so many pieces of jewelry we just gave them away to anyone who liked it.

“With glass there is the intrigue of translucency. I loved working with the glass from the first moment — the colors, textures and the gorgeous translucency were intriguing to me, there are so many ways to work with glass and every artist does it their own way, I felt a sense of freedom,” Solan said.

One day Fernandes and Solan were asked to set up a booth at a local church to help raise money to pay the medical bills of a young boy. They made $1,200 in two days.

“We realized we had something that people really liked,” she said.

Fernandes and Solan set up a small workshop and started selling their work at gift shows all over America. Soon after, they opened Fusion Glass, a shop and studio specializing in the art form.

Though Fernandes retired late in 2016, he and Solan remain friends. “He comes by to visit all the time,” Solan said.

For Idea Field, Solan is keeping many of the same elements of Fusion Glass, especially the feel of a studio where people can drop in and create. Solan will keep the name Fusion Glass Company for a few more months as the art studio transitions.

Currently, Idea Field is displaying an exhibit of glass panels made by the artists at St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. For the past two years, Solan has been teaching the art of glass fusion to the students at the center.

Also on exhibit are silk painting, mosaics and jewelry as well as paintings. Other mediums that Solan will be featuring in the future include photography and drawing.

In addition, Solan has added a lot of new options for classes, as the studio is no longer focused primarily on glass. People can now also take classes in silk painting, drawing, photography and mosaic. Starting in June, Idea Field will introduce “Pocket Money Projects” for kids on Saturdays.

Solan will continue with the popular Ladies Night Out, which is a time when women can come together and create a simple project and hang out with friends. The de-stressing time is powerful, Solan said. She remembers one particular LNO where at the end of the session, a student came up to her and gave her a great big hug.

“I’m a big advocate of hugging. She told me that she was battling cancer and said she had absolutely forgotten all about it for the first time while she focused on her creative task. The incident made us both cry.

“I remember thinking ‘that’s some powerful medicine’ to be able to take a person away from their troubles and worries. This is a gift I want to keep giving,” Solan said.

For more artistic endeavors of Idea Field, Solan is collaborating with friends Marjorie Pezzoli, a silk painting artist from La Mesa, and Wendy Morris, the art administrator for St. Madeline Sophie’s Center.

For people who want to drop in and do some art for a few hours, Idea Field is available any day that the shop is open.

Solan has made available an entire “menu” of projects using very simple techniques that anyone can do.

Just as Fusion Glass was popular with the community for its well-attended and fun art receptions, Solan is planning the same for Idea Field. The next big event will be Tea Under the Sea on May 13.
