i just wanna say that the only love triangle i can even think of that involved a childhood best friend where the main character didn't end up with the childhood best friend is pretty in pink (1986) - even though it was originally the plan to have them end up together, they ran a screen test and most people voted for the other love interest so they changed it before it was released - and one it was actually released not only did it get a ton of hate at the time but there are people that are STILL mad about this in today in 2022 and idk man the duffers grew up in the 80's and surely watched this all go down and as nerds and underdogs probably also found themselves rooting for duckie and were probably just as mad when he got rejected and so they understand what happens when you let the general audience influence your romance plots and i just think that maybe byler

Hello!! Just wanted to say thank you for your absolutely refreshing takes. It makes me feel like I'm not the only one which is so nice. I love checking your blog and reading through your responses, they're always so insightful!! Especially about Steve, Robin and Nancy

One thing ive been thinking about lately  that ive been wondering if you have thoughts on (but no pressure if you dont!) - is Nancy's plan to take down Vecna in s4. She saw the vision , she's ambitious and determined to take Vecna down, but she's also unempathetic, doesn't think about consequences and always needs to be right. She bulldozes over everyone and a part of me wonders how differently it could have gone if they didn't follow her plan. Or adjusted it. I mean, Steve has severe road rash up his whole back and arms, has been bitten, strangled, and is breathing in the toxic Upside Down air - and she still wants to go back into the Upside down relying on him. She dismisses his concerns about the bats and then the bats kill Eddie. A lot of this is probably just the Duffers writing decisions but get this boy some medical attention please oh my god take his injuries seriously. Nancy gets herself another gun even though they don't work on Upside Down creatures.

Sorry this isn't more coherent! Nancy is just so complicated and fucked up and interesting to think about!

thanks for calling my responses insightful! i try not to get too lost in what i want for characters and my interpretations and stick to what canon presents us with. obviously my opinions will always seep through, but i’m glad you like them!

i think the thing with nancy’s plan is that the duffers don’t want to make nancy look like an idiot, but her plan was designed to fail.

so everything that goes wrong is kind of outside of her control. there’s an earthquake, and they get caught by vines. eddie chooses to run back into the horde of bats. jason shows up and breaks max’s walkman.

the duffers didn’t want the audience to look at the plan and blame nancy for how it went wrong, because she’s their girlboss.

the thing is, when you look deeper into the plan, it’s just kinda stupid. she has someone majorly injured on the main vecna hunting team (and god someone please help this boy, he’s bled through his bandages nearly the second they’re on), she’s using a gun against an upside down creature when she’s never seen that work (steve has an axe that he just doesn’t use against vecna?), eddie and dustin aren’t given any kind of firepower to defend themselves, and everyone completely forgot that jason was after them.

i think if we’re going within the realm of canon, no plan they came up with was ever going to work because the vecna defeat has to wait for s5.

but within fanon, i do think if they’d waited a little more, if nancy had been a little more willing to listen to the others, planned a little better, this much shit wouldn’t have gone wrong. nancy finds it difficult to consider other people, she can’t always see the big picture when she’s focused on saving people, she’s not super emotionally in tune with others, and as a result the boy that’s seen two people get horrifically killed in the last few days gets put on the suicide mission.

though we also have to remember nancy is traumatised by what vecna showed her, so i don’t know if she ever would’ve been able to think clearly. she’s feeling guilty, and desperate, and so she reasons out max putting herself in danger as for the greater good.

sorry this didn’t end up being more about nancy! nancy is very fun to dive into, and her role in the plan is super interesting, especially because i don’t think she’s a particularly good leader figure, but i think the plan sucked because the duffers needed it to suck. and if the duffers wanted vecna defeated in s4, her plan would’ve worked, and nancy wouldn’t have girlbossed her way too close to the sun.

and like... im not an abuse victim. so i cant say what is and isnt right to show in a tv show depicting one, but for me as a viewer, i wouldnt mind keeping in the neil aspect, really showing how bad it can get, so long as he still gets his comeuppance and when he does no one feels bad about it. 

like i very much understand not wanting to make the abused kid the villain. i will not argue with anyone who doesnt ever want to see that in any capacity. but for me? i very much operate under the idea of anyone is capable of being good or bad. its a roll of the dice how a person is gonna turn out. so i do think there was a way to incorporate billys history and still make him the villain the duffers clearly wanted him to be. its just... you gotta go bigger. this is not a story meant for a minor character. you gotta really commit to it. and they didnt. which was the problem. it just... fell totally and completely flat

Honesty i love Stranger Things like im obsessed but season four, volume 2....man. Idk how im gonna recover. idk how the duffers are gonna revive the show like. Tbh the only reason i'll watch season 5 is to see how it it turns out. Anyways here my rant. SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4.

Theres so many things to adress but ill start with eddies death. He litterally died for no reason. The bats wouldnt of reached the creels house before the three killed vecna. And also, steve got attacked buy bats while SHIRTLESS and all he needed was a little first aid but eddie died within minutes of being attacked!? I dont understand why the duffers keep adding in new loveable characters and then killing them off. Because they are scared to kill of the main cast?? Because they are scared to change the plot and make the show different?? Its so annoying. Also. Joe and gaten had to film their bits on a different day cuz joe only had 10 minutes to film his. Like how messy is that. It (his death) was was so rushed and unnecessary. Why did no one mourn eddie except for his uncle and dustin?? No one cared. No one spoke abput him. Mile probably doesnt even know man. And one last thing. Is he in the Upside down??? They just left his body there? It was bullshit.

Why did the duffers say they were gonna adress wills sexuality??why did they ASSURED us that would happen. That we would finally have an answer. But NO. The duffers are scared to actually include more than one queer character/relationship and its annoying. They queerbaited us and used will to make a straight relationship 'stronger'. Why cant they actually have will as a actual MAIN character?? Like he doesnt really have any other character traits other than he is a scared, traumatized boy whos been kidnapped by monsters. Idk i feel like he needs to actually have more recognition. They also have completely ruined Mikes character. In s1 and s2, he was a caring person. He cared for will. He could tell when he was having an off day and would comfort him but im s4 he cant notice will SOBBING while sitting right next to him??? His ily speech was so...bad. it wasnt powerful or moving and didnt deserve the praise that it got.

In this season, i was so so so annoyed with lucas and ericas character. He plays basketball and cares about it even though NEVER showing an interest in it at all??? And erica... i love her character but there has been no growth. She is still has like that sassy stereotypical attidude that every black girl has in movies. Why hasnt she moved forward? Why???? Like they both have no character growth and are SO stereotypical Also. When that older white jock guy tackled her to the ground and jason held a gun to lucas's head-OH HELL NO. BITCHHHH.

Also stancy. Bitch its so annoying. It happened 2 years ago. I thought he was over her. In my opinion, its so toxic for steve. Nancy fucks up then steve has to apologise. At first i shipped it in s4 but then i started to think about it and now i hate it. Like the kids that steve said talk was lowkey weird and also idk i just hate it.

I love argyle but why is his only personality traight getting high. Hes also stonned and once again i feel like its a stereotypical thing. Like the only brown person is a stonner?? Its annoying. Why cant he be like the others where he is smart and isnt ALWAYS stonned ???

Steve was completley out of character v2. He barley spoke a WORD to dustin, he didnt hug him before he left to fight vecna, he thought he was inlove with nancy, he let robin run around in the UD by herself and he didnt address eddies death???? Why do they do this.

The duffer brothers successfully managed to ruin their plot and characters in just four hours. Please make it better. Ill find more stuff to rant about later.

Let’s discuss the Finn & Millie interviews.

If you are vouching for the interviews to be straight up bullshit, please read this. If you don’t, great, read it anyway. I’m hoping for discussion tho, so drop some asks if you have questions or disagreements. 👁👁

Okay, so in case you were unaware, very recently there were interviews that came out of finn and Millie gushing over how much m!leven there is this season. Like, a LOT of gushing.

So here’s the thing, I believe them! At least to some degree. There, I said it. Hopefully you guys don’t hate me over this. I’m just trying to be frank. Here, I will express my confusion over the duffers’ writing choices, present common writing choices in other stories, and PLEASE HELP ME I JUST DONT GET IT-

There’s no way they’d straight up lie to our faces about an important plot relationship like theirs, and as much as I believe some of the cast have to be told what to say when they have to steer around questions that give away too much, this just doesn’t seem like something they would have to lie about.

Something I’ve sensed since the beginning of the show was how obvious it was that M¡leven wasn’t going to be canon. And not even in a mean way. Without all the subtext and clues hinting at their romantic decline, I could really tell that they weren’t going to end up together because that’s just how show’s work. Tell me ONE fairly long-lasting show in which two characters got together in the first or second season and then STAYED together for the rest of forever. Come on, it’s just not plausible for a story to go on like that. It gets boring. And even if there’s ‘real life issues’ involved, it gets boring to watch them try to work it out! That’s why I’m so baffled right now that the duffers are still dragging out their relationship. I thought they might’ve known better than this.

For example, take enola holmes and Tewksbury. HELL YEAH THEYRE GONNA DRAG THAT SHIT OUT! It’s the relationship dynamics that get people to keep watching. Whether it be slow burn, or forbidden love, or friends with benefits or whatever the fuck! All of these dynamics exist because it gives the story stretch room to grow and develop the feelings and relationship. Room to make you want them to be together. For ST, you can argue that m!leven did have a dynamic that made us want them to be together, something along the lines of lost love (and then found), but the duffers seemed to write it in a way that really confuses me. I identified m!leven with the dynamic of young love, something that everyone knows doesn’t, or shouldn’t, last very long. Sorry to bring this up again, but they knew each other for a week, lost touch for a year, and boom. Relationship. How does that work when they know virtually nothing about each other?

I mean, sure, apparently m¡leven is working through ‘real issues’ in their relationship this season, which I’m excited for because it allows them to dive deeper into these mentioned plot holes in their love story, but come on. in s3 we SAW WITH OUR OWN EYEBALLS that they basically don’t get along unless they’re sucking face or are in mortal danger. (That’s an exaggeration, but you get what I mean. They just aren’t compatible and if anything, I liked the friends stage, or the yearning stage in which they THOUGHT they wanted each other instead of what’s happened in s3 and now :( bring them back.) as for the ‘married couple’ quote. Bro they are literally teenagers and it pAINS me to see the suffer brothers milk this relationship so hard. If what they say in these interviews is true, then either the subtext such as “The First I love You” song in the soundtrack, was all thrown out the window. Or it was just hinting at their “bumpy road of a relationship” this season. Which- ????GOD I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND.

And I don’t mean to undermine any of y’all’s theories on why finn and Millie said what they said. I just think we can’t let our preferences blind us from seeing what they’re telling us straight up. In case y’all didn’t know, I have a spider-man MJ mindset where if you don’t get too excited or raise your standards, you won’t be disappointed. Seriously, as much as I want to believe in byler and DO believe it, we can’t dismiss the facts just because we don’t like them.

BTW none of this means that the byler hints we expect won’t happen. Perhaps one of the ‘issues’ in the relationship is Mike being conflicted between his girlfriend and her fREAKING brother :o
