forever thinking about adelina and violetta the love they have for each other and the parallels from the first book and the last book. SIBLING ANGST FTW
the young elites
Tumblr media
the midnight star
Tumblr media
im so sorry but im gonna ramble because theres not enough of that here. SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE SERIES ‼️‼️
THE YOUNG ELITES:
from the beginning of the books we see how much adelina is willing to sacrifice for her sister and how they protect one another in their own way, we see how adelina would betray the daggers to keep violetta safe from the inquisition and we see how violetta LITERALLY BEGGED them to save her and instead she got used and held hostage, then at the end of the first book we discover that violetta was using her powers to protect her sister all those years from herself, even if it was lowkey kinda twisted. but the love was there!!! and the whole time in the first book we see how much adelina is continuously betrayed time and time again by people who are supposed to love her (their dad) and then just when she thinks she gets accepted by another family, they too, reject her and leave her all alone (the daggers). but at the end, violetta is who she clings to. violetta is the one who loves her unconditionally and with no bounds and its just so 😭😭😭
THE ROSE SOCIETY
thats just the first book!!!! the second book, theyre both together, and we can see adelina's journey into madness and how violetta tries to do everything she can to save her sister but adelina's gone off the deep end and she lashes out at everyone. but even through the madness, adelinas still looking out for her sister. the voices make her go insane and in the end, she lashes out at violetta and violetta runs away :( the juxtaposition between the ending of the first book and the second book makes me go so fucking feral because BECAUSEEEEE
THE MIDNIGHT STAR
then the last book, oh midnight star 😭😭 the way theyre both so wary of each other after 2 years of distance but they still cling to one another after everything!! violetta still trying to plead to rafaelle to save adelina despite being cast out 😭😭 and dont even get me started on adelina conquering countries and simultaneously looking for her sister in each one she comquers. and the end 😭😭 her redemption isnt through magiano (WHOLE OTHER RANT), its through her sister, violetta, who she does everything for. she sacrifces her LIFE or own life for violetta because thats just how they work! and the dialogue in the last book, how adelina still protects her sister even when violetta fled to the daggers. the end where she chooses violetta over her own life makes me so feral and its just a culmination of all her motivations and how she just wants to save her sister, thats all she wants. because despite everything, violetta is who she runs to. violetta was her safe space, and to imagine a life without violetta was impossible.
and yk what? in the whole series, adelina depended on her powers for everything from the moment she discovered she had them. when violetta would take them away, it physically pained her and she used her powers and they used her back but she needs them!! even when they were all supposed to be giving their powers back to the gods, she didnt even want to, until she saw her sister and thought that violetta could have a second chance at life if she gave her powers. AND SHE DID!!! but that wasnt enough, because violetta was dead. so adelina gave her life. her chance at peace with magiano, for violettas revival.
im so sorry this is so long but i just needed to ramble i have nobody to talk to about this series 😭😭

Akane Banashi: Chapter 61
Alright, this chapter was super cute, with Akane going around with her colleagues, asking about her father and his style of Rakugo.
Tumblr media
Shinta Arakawa’s a tragic figure in this series, as Akane is driven to figure out what went wrong when he pursued his dream. However, the expelled rakugoka is not the Shinta Akane wants to understand, it’s the passionate young man who had already grabbed hold of that dream. And that’s exactly who she gets to meet.
Tumblr media
My favorite thing about this particular chapter is the structure, starting with a page of introduction, then a montage of single panels showing each response, then a drawn out sequence with Akane’s mother, culminating in the excellent page above.
This also brings us to Akane’s nin solidified:
Tumblr media
We skip ahead a few weeks, and it’s time for the competition next chapter. Goddam was this one good.

The fact that the Magilumiere stall at Jump Festa was set up as a recruitment booth for the company, complete with flyers, is perfect marketing.
Brilliant, no notes, can't wait for my flyer to arrive, I love this series, etc.

Entranced by the Basilisks (Monstrous Matches #3) by Lillian Lark
Tumblr media
I know I've said it many times about many authors... But Lillian Lark is for real one of my favorites. I think she is my final addition to my top five, so I'll have to start saying top ten after this. Her writing? Immaculate. Her characters? Interesting, funny, relatable. Her plots? Full of depth, romance, and a little bit of angst. Not to worry, we always get our happy ending. The world she has built around this love bathhouse universe is one that I am deeply in love with. Of the three books I've gotten to read (que me desperately figuring out how to get my hands on the lake monster and werewolf ones) not one has left me wanting for anything but more, more, more!
This is the third of the monstrous matches series in the love bathhouse universe. It follows Emilia, who we first met in the second book Deceived by the Gargoyles, the restoration expert of the library that holds the supernatural worlds Archive. Following the traumatic incident of her being kidnapped, Emilia is now aware of the supernatural world that her best friend, Grace, is a part of. If it's not enough to find out that the things that go bump in the night are real and your best friend is a witch, Emilia gets thrown into dealing with her own supernatural troubles as an innocent touch to a serpent kin book leads to her getting cursed. Now with snakes for hair and a stony stare, she is desperate to find out how to get back to normal.
Luckily for Emilia, her boss just so happens to be a basilisk. Limited but capable due to his bloodline, Jasper, who has always had an eye for Emilia is there to help immediately when Emilia accidentally turns her coworker to stone. Jasper decides, despite the rejection he slapped on him the other night, to request help from his long-time fling, Ari. After another incident with Emilia's mother, we end up with Emilia, Jasper, and Ari all living under the same roof so that Ari can help Emilia train her new powers while they all search for ways to try and reverse her "chosen" condition, as Ari calls it.
Of course, with a chosen around now, Ari is determined to lock them into a triad as he knows this is exactly what he needs to get Jasper willing to mate with him... falling in love with Emilia is just a step along the way. Though charismatic and fun, Ari is a skilled player when it comes to manipulating the game board to get what he wants, which is why his tight lips and strategic plan is exactly what ends up getting the triad into trouble when Emilia finds out he has been lying to her.
The romance is delightful, I have to say, I think this is absolutely my favorite in the series so far. Each character had their own unique qualities and inner conflict which had me binging the whole book in a day. Emilia with her anxious yet quiet determination trying to figure out if she's okay with what she's become and the world she lives in. Jasper with his cold aloofness but underneath desiring nothing but to be wanted and needed. Finally, Ari, who desperately wants to keep those he loves but internally doesn't know if he can do so without lying to them yet also knowing that keeping his secrets will lead him to nothing but trouble, hurt, and regret.
The smut is... by far my favorite of anything I've read... Is that crazy? Well, then call me nuts. And it's plentiful... Like, really plentiful for 370 pages. It's basically full of every single way these three could have gotten down and dirty. Plus... snake men. (Sue me, I've got a thing for the scaly guys... but then, you pry do too if you're here :))
This is a fun and flirty romance embroidered with a little manipulation, some angst, one happy ending, and a whole lot of three-way positions. Lillian Lark is an excellent writer who brings her world to life through her relatable (sans being anything but human) main characters and their struggles in life and love. I highly recommend the love bathhouse universe and hope you enjoy it as much as I do. 9/10
Also, if you were wondering, between when I saved this draft at my lunch break and finished it off after work <( ̄︶ ̄)> I got the lake monster and werewolf paperback books ordered.
Would I read again? Yes, and I already want to, and I just finished it a couple days ago!
Would I recommend? 100%, please check out this series it deserves all the love

Imma talk shop a bit. By shop I mean, webcomics. and by webcomics, I'm gonna highlight one I HAD to read recently because of what the author/artist said about a specific character in said comic. So let's dive in and talk about EQUALIZE ( a crime/mystery drama! but it has romance elements that I focus on entirely too much >:3c ) (All pictures of the comic link to tapas, and the twitter quote links to the actual thread, so you can read it for yourself) (I read it on Tapas, but it's also on webtoons) Here we have Crow- he is my favorite. For obvious reasons. Look at his fashion!
Tumblr media
a Bi in deNIal. (I know I really forced that rhyme)
Tumblr media
He is an informant working for the police to find a kidnapper and he also knows something that no one else knows but everyone WANTS to know which, naturally, paints a target on his back.
Tumblr media
He also doesn't know how to knock on doors. He just picks the lock. ( now I know you're probably thinking, INvaSIoN of PrIVacY, but it's a funny gag, and it's fiction so calm down and don't get worked up over it. Nic yells at him for it anyway)
Tumblr media
We also have Nic, he's just... SUCH a great foil for Crow. He's way more relaxed and chill, and takes things as they come. Wants to do more than stand on the sidelines. The "tired of running from problems, tired of not being strong enough to protect the ones I love" person and we get to see that growth as he works with Crow through various near death situations. Now see, Nic is important because while saving Crow from being kidnapped, he manifests a strange power
Tumblr media
The mark appears on his hand and what it does is equalizes... the strength of him and his opponent... I think- Uh don't quote me on that, my attention isn't really on HOW the powers work It's literally on the characters and their struggles. Terrible I know. How dare I only focus on the story beats I LIKE and not know every single thing about this comic inside and out, THE NERVE- Btw there are other uses with other symbols and they have different powers so like, if you wanna read it to see how that pans out, do it! It's all plot relevant! :D I do kind of pay attention. But back on task, Nic has this power that gives him an edge in helping Crow out, so he gets cleared to help! Which is great because it's the buddy cop duo we all love and adore-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
complete with the "when you try to follow a lead and it ALL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG" and it brings the two buddies closer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now I won't spoil too much for you, Just tease you enough to make you read it, of course, but I will say, that all these juicy details weren't what drew me into reading this comic. Nope. It was literally just interacting with the creator, and what they said about Crow from one of the episodes of Crow's slow self discovery. I'll post the exact exchange that was said by the artist themself below. vvvv
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The part that REALLY resonated with me was
Tumblr media
Because a freaking week before this episode went live, I had just come to terms with the very same thing about myself. XD I was like "I'm pan, but don't talk about it, I can't ever really come out because of where I live and how most of my immediate family would not approve" yadda yadda. Most of you know about that if you read the read more- don't read those. I'm just screaming into the wind. Now I'm more relaxed about it, but like, I read that and KNEW and UNDERSTOOD that struggle. The rejecting the way you feel about something. The other reason I wanted to read it was also because I have a character named Crow, and they look similar! I think Celly's Crow is smarter than mine though, but I think my Crow is stronger than Celly's Crow XD
All in all, this series is SO fun, it's got the buddy cop vibe down, with your good strong story beats, interconnecting web of events, and balances the comedy with the main plot seamlessly. The comedy is top notch and it had me laughing OUT LOUD and rooting for characters- The personalities, the struggles, the past conflicts and where characters are at headspace wise and growth wise feels very realistic and it draws you in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I love the art so much. It's unique and stands out and the colors are so fitting for the characters, and I've drawn fanart for this series already don't @ me, I already ship crowxnic and they are the cutest. when canon? when kiss for real? That ends my lil essay about this series. Celly is super nice! So, go find them on Instagram or the site formerly know as Twitter. -> Sunnycelly. (this links to instagram) And go read this comic! NOW go FORTH and read some buddy cop BL for goodness sake. (it's not LISTED as a romance, but I see the BROMANCE) (I was so sold on the comedy of the series though too, I cannot express enough how engaging this series is. I love it an unhealthy amount)

The List.
Based on the Cass Apocalyptic Series.
The first part of this has been rumbling around in my brain ever since that Super Sad Scene a month ago, but yesterday’s update gave me the other side of the coin, so to speak, and finally pulled it all together.
@somerandomdudelmao thanks for the fuel, friend
                              -----
Donatello’s days have become a series of checklists, as of late.
No, that’s not exactly true. His days have always been about lists: what he’s done, what he can delegate to someone else, what still needs doing. But these days he’s been doing less and listing more, piling tasks from the first category onto the second as fast as he can manage, hoping he has enough time to empty the queue.
The full catalog is written out in a series of files, reorganized for accessibility to the layperson and meticulously up-to-date as of yesterday. He meant to run through it again this morning, ensure all the relevant instruction manuals were attached to each item and double check his protocols, but he wasn’t… he couldn’t…
He’s going to die tonight.
It irritates him, his own miscalculation of the timing more than the stark presence of his oncoming demise. The latter has been inevitable for quite some time, long enough that he’s gotten used to the idea. But he thought he had another week or two, and he doesn’t like being proven wrong. He wonders if his brothers know.
Probably not. They know it’s bad now, obviously, because they’ve piled him with pillows and blankets and surrounded him on all sides, and Leo has finally gone quiet. But they trust him, they’ve always trusted him, even when they shouldn’t, so if he swears he’ll last a few more days, they’ll believe him. He thinks. He’s pretty sure. If they knew it was tonight, he doubts they would choose to sleep through it. Donnie thinks about waking them up, but only for a moment. He’d like to say it’s a noble act, to leave them in peace a little bit longer, but the truth is he’s just too fucking tired to move.
There’s something settled bone-deep in his chest, a heaviness that sits on him like a stone, a peine forte et dure pressing him down and down, stopping his voice and his breath and his heart. He wonders if this is what dying usually feels like, or if it’s unique to the Kraang. Raph would know.
He cranes his neck to the right, to catch Raph’s face out of the corner of his eye. Raph’s working eye is half-open, staring down at the floor. Donnie could ask him. (He won’t. Let him fall asleep.) The movement of his head is so slight it doesn’t even catch Raph’s attention. He’s too tired for anything more. He’s so goddamn tired.
His lists are out of reach at the moment, with his physical interfaces back in the lab and his ninpo locked behind a wall of oh-god-it-sounds-too-exhausting-to-even-try, but he memorized them all long ago.
Raphael: Maintenance (delegated to Casey, who has it well in hand). Plans (tucked away in a dedicated folder, long term, but someday they’ll have the materials, and Raph will have a proper body again, someday). Honey (yes, he passed that along last week).
Raph has access to the tracking programs, so he can keep an eye on everyone himself, even when Donnie can’t pull up locations or vitals for him anymore. He has his own space in the base once more, somewhere to close a door when he needs to (he insists he doesn’t, but Donnie isn’t a fool). He has more excuses to spend time with Casey, who’s taking over his upkeep. Donnie hopes it fills in some gaps for both of them.
He runs through the list, double checks each item. It’s his last chance to make sure he hasn’t forgotten anything important.
He looks down, finds Mikey.
There’s a stockpile of the anti-aging serum in his safe, the formula in his database, plans for the permanent solution clearly labeled. As long as they have his lab, his systems, Mikey will be as young as his years. He’s walked him through the greenhouse, even if most of it is controlled by the computer system. Mikey misses the world being green; it’ll do him good to spend more time around the plants. He has his tea, his candles. He has Draxum, who by now should have received a — mildly — threatening message warning him not to pull any disappearing acts anytime soon. He has their ancestors, just a short call away.
Donnie’s sure Mikey will call on him soon. He doesn’t plan to stray far.
Up a bit. To the left. Leo.
The arm — Leo knows how to take care of it, as does Casey.
The passwords — reset, something even Leo will be able to remember without resorting to blackmail.
The schedule — reshuffled for the next few days, he’ll have a hard enough time sleeping as it is.
The photos — everything they have, even the embarrassing ones. He even managed a couple of prints, and one precious shot from their pre-apocalypse days, something for Leo to tuck into a pouch and carry with him, when they’re not around.
Raph, Mikey, Leo. He doesn’t think he’s missed anything. Donnie lets his head fall back, too exhausted to hold it up any longer.
Is it enough?
His mind stretches further out. He’s unraveling.
What about April? Her prescription is up to date, they just checked a month ago. She has the latest in his combat tech, which has kept her safe in the field this long, so he has no reason to think it will falter now. He’s leaving her a few extra pieces, since he won’t be able to use them anymore. Leo will find the time for a movie night once in a while, he’s certain, even if his taste in Jupiter Jim movies is horrendous. They still have coffee; he’d die before he let that particular supply run out. He will, actually.
Casey. Fuck, Donnie’s gonna miss his birthday. But he did plan for this, his protocols will kick in. The mask is finished, everything is in place. He’s reconfigured his workstations, fit them for a tiny human instead of a seven-foot turtle. Casey has a better head for mechanics than any of his brothers ever did. Kid likes to be useful, so Donnie’s left him as much use as he can. He’s taught him everything Casey can learn and left instructions for more, when he’s a little older and wiser. His family will take care of him, they’ll make sure he gets there.
The base. It has to hold, to give them somewhere safe. The infrastructure is sound, and they have people to manage repair work. Supplies are decent, the most critical items in stock, everything that can be made renewable is. Their allies — Leo handles interpersonal issues and leadership, but Donnie’s checked the list with a pragmatist’s eye, left notes and rankings for priority. Security is the largest concern, but he’s spent nearly half his time with his assistants since his self-diagnosis (he could have spent it with his family), running them through the programs and adjustments, trying to bring them up to somewhere in the realm of his own expertise (a fool’s errand, but still). They’ve been rigorously instructed, they understand that the little things like sleep are secondary concerns. It has to hold.
Is it enough? For them to be okay?
He’s done everything he can. He can’t do any more. So it has to be enough.
Donnie blinks, and for a moment isn’t certain his eyes will open again at the end of it. But they do. At least one more time, they obey him.
Raph. Mikey. Leo. April. Casey. Home. He rolls back through the list. It’s his last chance. He can’t miss anything.
Mikey’s hand tightens unconsciously around his wrist, fingers meeting easily on either side. Donnie feels only the echo of the pressure.
Raph. Mikey. Leo. April. Casey. Home.
Something bright sparks at the edges of his vision before it fades. The last gasps of a dying brain, he supposes. Synapses firing one last time before they’re snuffed out.
Raph.
Mikey.
Leo.
                                                            April.
                                                                                                                        Casey.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Home.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Light.
                                                                                                                         There’s light.
                                                            It hurts.
He thought dying would stop the pain, but it’s risen to a fever pitch instead. His brother’s arms are gone, but the disease wraps around him in their place, consumes him. It rages like a wildfire, burning through his center until pieces start to flake away like ash.
Oh, this is what it does, what it was built for. The Kraang could have killed him in a lot of different ways. He’d wondered why they chose this one.
He hasn’t planned for it. This is something he didn’t even know to fear.
It’s bright and it hurts but it’s quiet as he crumbles, folds in on himself like a black hole in the utter silence of outer space. It’s quiet enough that the voice that breaks through does so clear as a bell.
His head turns to follow the sound, instinct. He’s lost half his field of vision, but what’s left is enough. He looks, and finds Casey.
Casey looks at him, at him, not the body. Donnie opens his mouth to ask a question — What are you doing here? How? Why? — but something else sloughs out instead. Not blood. He doesn’t have that anymore.
Casey calls his name once more and starts running.
Donnie’s questions fold back into his mind. His mouth clicks shut, he swallows back the putrid rot and pushes himself up. His arms are shattered but they’ll have to hold him. They have to. Because Casey is here and he needs something, which means Donnie missed something, which means he isn’t done.
His spirit disagrees with him, doesn’t see the logic. His arms don’t hold.
Casey reaches to catch him as he falls, and the touch ruptures him instead. He scatters. Into the air and the ground and Casey. For a moment, he’s just pieces, fumbling around and latching onto anything that welcomes them, and Casey does that. They flow into him. They’re him. They’re…
He’s…
Casey, he’s…
Donatello pulls himself back together. Most of himself, anyway. The infection hasn’t followed him but the damage persists. He’s run through with cracks and crevices, shaking bits away into infinity with every movement. But there’s more of him here than not.
Unexpectedly, Donnie is not gone. He’s still dead, but that’s fine, he planned for that one.
Casey has him now. He wraps himself around Donnie in layers, helps hold him together with a kind of sheer will that makes up for any lack of mystic knowledge in spades. Casey asks him to stay, and Donnie takes up the task like Sisyphus sizing up the hill. This time, this time I’ll do it right.
Even better, Casey has taken him to another time, one where all of Donnie’s long-term plans are now completely-fucking-reasonable plans. Casey’s going to fix it, so Donnie can fix everything else. Whatever else needs it. He hasn’t really asked. And he knows he’s missed something, but he doesn’t think too hard about what, not yet.
First thing’s first: he needs a body.
It’s so simple to accomplish that it seems like the universe is mocking him. Just a quick 1-2-3, ticking off the list. It feels almost stupid, like running back through the early levels of a video game after unlocking all the ultimate weapons and burning through enemies and obstacles, laughing, shit, did I used to think this was hard?
In no time at all, his own face has formed in front of him.
In no time at all, he’s gasping.
It’s only been a few hours since he last breathed air, but he’s missed it.
Another thing he’s missed? Functional musculature. Casey slams into him and Donnie is startled to find that it doesn’t knock him over. His arms and legs look like actual limbs again, not fragile little sticks disguising themselves as such. He stands, dragging Casey along without a second thought. The weight barely registers. It’s amazing.
The power trip is heady, but it only lasts a few minutes before reality kicks it in the ass and pulls him back down to earth.
We lost, Casey says.
They’re dead, Casey says.
It wasn’t enough, Casey does not say, but Donnie hears it just as clearly.
All those plans, the preparations, the precautions and protocols, they only borrowed a year or two before they fell apart. He sees the timeline spiral out before him, tighter and tighter until it collapses in on itself, rendered all the more insignificant from his own point of perception. He was alive yesterday. His family is dead today.
Everything he did, it wasn’t enough. Of course it wasn’t. He was stupid to think otherwise.
(Raph. Mikey. Leo. April. Casey. Casey’s still here. It was enough for him, at least.)
It cuts at him a little, to have been so wrong. But he’s strong again, now. He can take the wound. More importantly, he has another chance to get it right.
Donnie breathes. His chest expands smoothly, easily. The air doesn’t rattle in his lungs. He’s alive, he’s a genius, he can fix anything.
He pulls up a list.

the main mistake that people who dislike s8 and put it low in their series rankings make is the belief that, like any other series (apart from s9), it’s a collection of standalone stories tied together by some vague throughline i.e. missy’s ‘heaven’. “oh, this episode’s mid, that episode’s bad” meanwhile it’s not about individual episodes at all. i firmly believe that it should be viewed as a singular long serial.
so grateful that i was extremely late to the party and binged it all in a week instead of watching every episode as they were airing, because sometimes the plots barely matter at all. do you remember what the skovox blitzer actually looks like or what it wanted with coal hill in the first place? hardly. i had to google its name. but what you do remember from the caretaker is twelve acting like an antagonistic prick towards danny, and that’s what matters. almost every villainous entity is some kind of soldier, the contempt twelve shows to everybody but clara becomes the source of their toxicity… in the forest of the night is pretty obviously rubbish scifi, but it demonstrates danny’s fundamental incompatibility with clara, as well as the scene in which clara is ready to sacrifice herself and her students for the doctor’s sake, foreshadowing their reckless, almost suicidal codependency.
point is, but it really does work best as a tightly woven tapestry. sure, some episodes succeed individually, but most of the individual plots are mildly exciting only in a ‘this is fun to watch for kids’ way… UNLESS you approach them from the overarching perspective. i.e. mummy on the orient express has wonderful style, a thrilling mystery, creative concepts and interesting side characters, but its story appeal hinges on the twelveclara failed breakup. listen is frightening enough, but its entire story appeal hinges on just how much clara affects the doctor’s values past and present, and whether or not she has a future with danny (she doesn’t).
what i’m saying is, the narrative in s8 is a non-negotiable package deal. buy one, get them all. and it has no skips. i hate the idiotic pro-life message in kill the moon as much as the next sensible person, but what the episode does well is really hammer home how much of a sanctimonious asshole twelve initially is, which is crucial to his future character evolution.
tldr; the correct way to watch series 8 is all in one go. series 8 is great. more love for series 8
