Władysław Podkowiński, Szał uniesień (Frenzy of Exultations/Extasy), 1893
The painting is considered to be the first work of Symbolism in Polish art. The first exhibition of the work was met with huge interest, evoking both appraisal and criticism from more conservative circles. The negative voices and failure to sell the work for the desired price allegly pushed the author into real moment of frenzy that resulted in cutting the paining in pieces. Speculation about the true meaning of the paintings, reasons for destroying the work and author's untimely death strengthen the legend surrounding the work. Currently, after successful restoration the paining is available for public eye in Krakow Sukiennice (The Cloth Hall), belonging to the National Museum. The cuts are still visible though.

Szeptunka
Szept przerwany ?.........Ustał , by wybuchać gnozą dla niewtajemniczonych. Jednoznaczną i bolesną w cielesności.
Znać, że Szeptucha z Panem Bogiem rozprawia o rzeczach ostatecznych.

Wladystaw Podkowinski (1866-1895) “In the Garden” 1894 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr This little landscape study entitled “In the Garden” represents the modernity and novelty of the painter’s approach to nature, combining his Parisian experiences with a specific expressionism of form. The work shows a part of a park alley slightly enlivened by a sketchy figure of a woman. The lesson of Impressionism is visible in the treatment of colours, their dependence on sunlight and its reflection and, above all, in the seemingly random choice of a scene: the artist has attempted to capture the fleeting moment without paying attention to the composition layout. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.) I was looking at the illustrations that accompany the lyrics of each album looking for inspiration for a quick fanart to do over the weekend and seeing the little drawing of Stand by him made me want to do a personal version. Then, while I was doing the draft, similar to the original, I thought back to a painting I love: "Ecstasy" or "szał uniesień" by Władysław Podkowiński. And I thought it was a perfect pairing.
It was one of the first oil paintings seen in my youth that I fell in love with so I'm really pleased to have been able to combine it with a Ghost fanart.

Władysław Podkowiński, Szał uniesień (Frenzy of Exultations / Ecstasy)
1894, oil on canvas,
The painting is one of the best known works of Podkowiński. Upon its first exhibition the painting was labelled scandalous for its bold representation of the theme of sexual desires. The subsequent attempt of the artists to destroy the work by cutting it with a knife and his untimely death cemented Podkowiński's legend as a accursed artist.

#you know where this is going#but this is szał uniesień (frenzy of exultations) by władysław podkowiński from 1893#and yes it was quite scandalous in fin the siecle#and there's a very dramatic backstory of passion and heartbreak behind it#that culminated with the artist cutting the canvas after breaking up with the model (the woman not the horse)#but onto the tag rants#I have been thinking of writing a review of I am the Master short story collection#which obv resulted in another wave of frustration with chibnall era's essentialism posing as existentialism#the collection has three stories relying on paralleling the master with the doctor#master of disguise where ainley dresses up as four#and night harvest which is basically an rtd era companion introduction episode#except the enigmatic stranger met by a too-curious-for-her-own-good young woman is the master#simple and works out as well as you might expect#(ainley gets outed because of gendered language and when you think simm will overthrow an evil system he goes i'll make it more efficient)#and then there's dhawan's the master and margarita#and obv i have an unjust grudge against this one because this title felt like a promise that was not delivered on#but objectively the story is good! just a bit overstuffed feels more like a draft of a novel than a novella#but generally the idea is that the master has his own pertwee-like camaraderie in soviet version of unit#and? has to? come up? with? illusions? to? *be*? the doctor?#idk if the aithor knew where potd will go or if cc read the story and thought *omg i have been so brilliant all along*#but this whole thing just feels so.#infertile.#like that's the only thing i feel when i look at cc's idea of the master as a self annihilating* character#*not self destructive they've always been self-destructive because destruction is a condition of construction#like berger's clown who always gets punched to the ground and always gets up they're an ironically redeeming figure#and their NATURAL similarities to the doctor are such a fruitful concept they were doing great fuelling the chemistry for 50 years#and now this. just. where do you go from this?#beyond spending a moment feeling moved by how moved i am what is to be my intellectual response? what's the discussion?#beyond but you see the doctor is good :33 because they make friends :33 and they make friends because they are good :33 ∞#tw: negativity
