so going back in time to when y’all first met

you guys met through ponyboy- well kinda

pony had to do a partner science project for school and got paired up, by his teacher, with your younger sibling

(and despite being socs, you and your younger sibling were raised to, well, to not be assholes)

so they got along pretty well so pony invited them over the Curtis house to work on the project

anyways it got late and ur sibling called for you to pick em’ up

and when Darry opened the door to you and your cute skirt and perfectly curled hair

he was absolutely captivated the second he layed eyes on you

to say the least

y’all exchanged numbers and what not and about a month or so later you started dating <3

Okay next

yes yes yes you love spoiling him and his brothers

but honestly darry isn’t a huge fan of you spending your money on him or his family

he’s very grateful don’t get me wrong and the boys love it but

he wants to be able to provide for his brothers on his own with his hard work and feels bad when you spend your money on them

but you like giving gifts to them it make you happy when the boys get all excited and it isn’t a waste to you to spend your money on the man you love

he also doesn’t want you to see him as someone who isn’t able to keep his family afloat financially (even though you know he’s very hardworking and you admire him for it)

any of the gang members hear someone talking bad about ya? whether it’s a soc or greaser, it don’t matter. their instantly coming to your defense

they really like you and are all glad darry found someone as good as you

definitely no bad mouthing socs under darry’s roof (well unless there was a rumble or som like that yk)

he gets pissed when you tell him some greasers have been naggin on you and won’t leave ya alone

he’ll gladly have a talk with them and straighten things out if you catch my drift

especially if you get physically hurt or come to his door crying?

he’s comforting you as much as he can

but makes sure to let the gang know that if they just happen to see these greasers, to give ‘em a piece of darry’s mind for him 😁

i mean he tried at first but your friends weren’t very open and didn’t love the idea of you dating ‘some goddamn grease’ so he eventually gave up

see now you may be oh so loving and warm

but your friends on the other hand aren’t exactly the same way

maybe one or two but the majority are your typical stuck-up, kinda douchy, socs

so darry (and the gang too) wasnt very fond of them but that’s alright you kinda expected that to happen considering the way your friends are vs how the gang it

they just live two very different life styles and are bound to butt heads no matter what

when you stay over at his house he has a little space in his closet for your things and likes to help you pick out outfits to wear

never ever let’s you walk around alone in greaser territory, he knows how some of them can be and he’s too protective of you to let you get put in any sort of danger

he spends a lot of time just admiring you

whether your putting on makeup or studying for college in his kitchen

he’s just so interested in your life

also kinda (though he will never talk about it out loud) sometimes likes to imagine, through you/when watching you just live your soc life, what his life could have been like if he stuck with college

but he’d never say that because he loves his brothers more than anything and is glad he chose to take care of them

just sometimes he thinks about how different things would be if he didn’t yk

Greasers x reader who does rodeos?

A/N: Rodeos, rodeos, rodeos. You guys have no clue how much I love rodeos, thank you so much for requesting this <3 this one is centered around a bull rider!reader, as requested by Non

DARRY CURTIS

Darry went to the rodeo, mostly to supervise Ponyboy and Soda and make sure they stay off the horses to prevent any injuries

He was not planning on coming home with a piece of paper from you, one of the bull riders in the rodeo, tucked into his back pocket, your phone number scrawled across it

If you’re riding in Tulsa, in any of the rodeos around, Darry’s going to be there, standing at the panels while you run

From the second you’re loaded into the bucking shoot, Darry goes deadly silent, eyes trained on you behind the gate

He’s quiet, maybe muttering under his breath about how he wants you to be careful, wants you to be safe, but he doesn’t relax until you’re off the bull and back behind the panels

Darry’s supportive, he’s not going to tell you to stop riding unless you reach a point of serious injury, but he’s very nervous about your well-being, especially if someone falls badly before you’re supposed to ride

SODAPOP CURTIS

The first thing he tells everyone who meets you is that you ride bulls, he’s your number one fan and your biggest supporter

If you have to travel for rodeos, he’s offering to travel with you even though he knows he really can’t just leave his brothers like that, he really loves watching you do your thing <3

Just imagine calling the Curtis house from somewhere up in Wyoming ‘cause you’re there for a rodeo and talking to Soda as long as you can before you have to go ride, you can hear his brothers and the gang in the background and in that moment, you want nothing more than to be back there with him

He knows you can get hurt, he’s familiar with being hurt in the rodeo but he also understands the magnetic pull it has and would never keep you from riding

He does this thing, he kisses the spot between your eyebrows, then your nose, then your mouth

Soda does it every time you ride, claiming that it’s a good luck charm and that you’ll have a good ride when he does it

PONYBOY CURTIS

So like the racing headcanons, we’re gonna bump Pony’s age up a little, cause bull riding is an 18+ sport, steer riding is for the younglings but that’s not what was requested-

Ponyboy is the king of having freakouts over you riding bulls, this boy gets so nervous watching you

Like if you get thrown? Pony’s holding his breath until you stand back up and manage to get out of the arena

He’s talking a mile a minute once he finally sees you after you take a bad fall, hands fluttering around your body as he tries to see if you sustained any injuries

If you do get hurt, don’t try and conceal any injuries from him, Pony’s observant and wants to make sure you’re okay

Sometimes he convinces the boys to come with him, Johnny’ll usually tag along with him and they’ll stand by the panels cheering for you

DALLAS WINSTON

Dally hangs around rodeos a lot, okay? He claims it’s because he likes being there, because the barrel racers are cute, because he likes causing trouble with the cowboys

But anyone with eyes can see that he’s really just there for you dude

I just- the mental image of taking Dally’s hat and then going to ride while you’re wearing his hat?? That’s stuck in my mind, just the look on his face as it shifts from an amused look of shock to pure pride at seeing you in his hat

He’s all chatty while the rodeo’s going on, making his rounds and catching up with everyone there, making sure they all know his doll’s riding later

When you do finally get your turn to ride, Dally likes to stand as far from the bucking shoots as possible, he loves you doll but he gets a little nervous watching you sometimes, especially if the bull is acting up in the shoot before you get settled

Likes to act all big and bad and untouchable but if you ever got hurt, this man would lose his ever-loving mind, like it’s super bad, he can’t stand the thought of losing you

JOHNNY CADE

Aging him up just a little bit too for this guys, he’s a little young so we’ll make him fit the crowd just a little bit better-

All of your riding buddies absolutely love him, if he shows up to a rodeo, expected teasing from all your friends because Johnny’s just so cute against the panels, dark eyes searching for you in the crowd

He usually brings Ponyboy along with him or Dallas and they cheer for you <3

If you’re a bull rider, you’re gonna have a few scars and a whole lot of good stories

Johnny loves hearing about your stories, the two of you cuddled up on that old car bench, watching the stars as you tell your tales

Also! Johnny kisses your scars because I say so :) he’s just cute like that, y’know?

TWO-BIT MATHEWS

Also because I say so, you’re probably not riding when you meet Two-Bit, I just love the idea of you hanging by the panels, arm up in a sling as you stare wistfully over at the bucking shoots

Two-Bit wanders over, tossing the boys a hopeful look over his shoulder as he stands against the panels at your side

He strikes up a conversation, asking about your arm and where you’re from and lucky for him, you like him enough to agree to his proposal for a date later that week over at one of the diners in town

Two thinks you’re super badass, he knows you’ve gotta be tough to ride bulls but it’s probably not his favorite thing about you? It’s not the reason he fell for you, that’s what I mean-

He met you when you were injured, so he knows the risks that are involved with you riding

Still, Two thinks you’re super cool for riding! Really admires you and is going to steal your hat

STEVE RANDLE

Y’all already know, he’s a cheerleader and he’s dragging the boys along to hype you up with him

Cheers the loudest when you have a qualifying ride and becomes the quietest when you hit the dirt 

I don’t really think Steve hung around the rodeos much before he started talking to you?

Like yeah- he was there for Sodapop when he rode, but after he got hurt and stopped competing, Steve didn’t go as much

He’d rather go to a drag race, y’know? Cars are more his thing than horses and bulls, he’d spend all day at the tracks before he got involved with you

But he’s respectful of the fact that bulls are your thing and likes to hang around the rodeos because of you, hanging around your buddies and helping you with whatever you want

TIM SHEPARD

I’m sensing a sort of enemies-to-lovers thing here? Like Tim and you have the sort of relationship where you tease each other mercilessly until one of you asks the other on a date

Blah blah blah, you guys know how enemies to lovers work, I’ll talk more about that later if y’all are interested, but now you’re dating and it’s great

He’s a jerk and will tease you about how easy bull riding is and how the bulls can’t be that bad

All you gotta do is show him the bulls bucking in the shoots before they’re released and his eyes just go wide and he mumbles a small apology

Will brag to everyone how brave you are, so tough because you ride bulls for fun and everything

Such a big fan if you have scars because he has a scar and loves running his fingers over them when he’s in a soft mood

CURLY SHEPARD

Once again, the age thing with Curly so bump him up a few years to fit the crowd and we’re all good!

After falling for you, Curly is begging and pleading with his older brother so he can ride bulls as well, desperate to try and snag your attention and be around you more

Tim, deciding he’d rather not have his younger brother die by bulls, flat out tells him no, much to your amusement when you find out

But, lucky Curly, you still decide to go on a date with him and the rest is history <3

Fits in really well with your fellow rodeo riders, I feel like his level of crazy fits well with theirs

Curly’s a nervous wreck if you get hurt, he’s fussing over you, his cool and calm façade completely forgotten until he knows you’re okay

BOOK REVIEW: The Outsiders

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Number of pages: 192 Genre: Fiction Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Reviewed by anonymous

The Outsiders is about the life of 14-year old boy Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy has to deal with many problems in his young life, which makes it hard for him to distinguish between right and wrong. This makes him feel alone when in reality he has a core group of friends that would do anything for him. I like this book because it shines a light on what life would be like for a kid Ponyboy’s age back in the 1900’s. This was one of the more intriguing parts of the story for me because compared to today’s world, they are nowhere near the same. Another aspect of the story that I enjoyed was the interactions between Ponyboy and his friends. I thought it was interesting to see how they fed off of each other, and developed throughout the story. One thing that I wasn’t a big fan of was the ending because although it was moving, I felt that Ponyboy didn’t get what he deserved, and was kind of left hanging. 

Ponyboy also has an underdog story which you can’t help but root for. I’d say I resonated the most with Ponyboy after finishing the novel. In the end, you can tell that Ponyboy is just trying to fit in, which is really hard for him to do. This made me feel bad for the kid because he couldn’t really figure out what was the right thing to do and when to do it. This book made me feel a full range of emotions. Sometimes I was happy, sometimes sad, and sometimes even angry at the decisions that some of the characters made. This book changed the way I thought about teenage life during Ponyboy’s time. Although I expected it to be different from what I am used to today, I was not expecting such a drastic change, that made life sound like a completely different world. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in a taste of the 1960’s. This book creates a vivid image of what life would be like for a teenage boy at the time. It also has some great characters with even better personalities that make the story just that much more interesting. In conclusion, I would rate this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

No. I was thinking of hitching a ride on my husband's flights out there in a few days, since he has a day-long layover in Eugene, but I've been dealing with a lot of anxiety lately due to one of my medical conditions, so I really need to take it easy and stay home. It’s almost 4am, I can’t sleep because of Reasons, and my brain isn’t functioning enough to be productive, so I’m just gonna fill out this writing meme. So, yeah, if you’re interested in some very long, self-indulgent writing babble, keep reading, and if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry the cut doesn’t work. 

1. What are your favourite genres and/or styles to write in?

Contemporary lit has always been my thing. I was never really into reading or writing much action/adventure or fantasy, which is weird because I was very into shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and LOST - but, I was mostly into those shows for the very rich character dynamics and developments, so. Anyway, Sanctuary is the first thing I’ve written in my life that isn’t in the contemporary, real-world genre and I’m doing okay with it, but I do sometimes get a little paranoid that it’s too character focused with not enough action/comic-genre stuff going on. This is really stepping outside of the box for me, to be honest. 

(I just remembered that I did write some Batman fanfic when I was maybe 16  or so, but I’m not sure it counts bc it was terrible and I pretty much just wrote  a Buffy-esque character to be Batman’s sappy love interest. God, how embarrassing.) 

2. What was the last writing project you finished and felt successful with?

Okay, so, when I was finishing grad school, I had to complete a “publishable” thesis project and mine is/was this collection of linked short stories that I spent probably a good year and a half (including my thesis semester) working on. Technically, I did finish it enough that it passed the graduation requirements, and I have been chipping away at it on and off since then, but after I graduated, I just ... stopped writing, in general. Depression and real life are a shitty combination for writers with very little internal motivation. But, despite that, this collection holds a very dear place in my heart. There are seven stories total, all young adult, coming-of-age themed, and they’re linked by character in that they all take place in a small town and the characters from each story sort of know each other in passing, as happens in a small town. There’s room for ten stories, because it’s a nice, even number. I love all of the characters and I think it could be something really great and could be published successfully - just, it needs a lot more work to get to that point. Eventually it will. Anyway, yes, that’s my last “finished” writing project and I do feel a modicum of success toward it, for what it’s worth. 

3. If you have a WiP how do you feel it’s going? What stage are you in?

I am actually 85% pleased with how Sanctuary is going. I started writing the fic without any real idea of what I wanted to do with it or where it would go - I was just having a lot of Loki feels during a difficult time in my life. Prior to this, I would handle my Character Feels by indulging in a lot of watches and re-watches and occasionally making music videos and sometimes fan art (graphics, I can’t draw for shit), but these methods just weren’t cutting it this time ... and hence, fic was born. 

It’s not a perfect story, of course - there are some inconsistencies and errors and the writing can always be more polished, but I’m just happy that I’ve stuck with it for this long and allowed it to develop the way that it has. I’m able to flex my writing muscles and get back into the practice of it while having fun at the same time. The story is four chapters away from completion, but I have plans for a sequel and also a couple of one-shots from Thor’s POV that I want to play around with. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with where I am in my little fic-verse right now. 

When it comes to original fiction, aside from the aforementioned short story collection, I am in the plotting stages of a novel involving reincarnation, because I am tropey trash, but it has potential. So, there’s that. 

4. What are your favourite places to write?

I actually feel like I write more productively when I am away from my apartment, which is a conundrum because I pretty much only leave my apartment to go to work or, like, the grocery store. I have a job that allows me to be at a computer for most of the day, so when I’m not busy, I like to write at work. I weirdly feel more productive and clear-headed at desktop computers, but I don’t have one of my own, so when I’m not at work or at the library, I write on my laptop in places like Barnes and Noble or laying in bed like a lazy bum. I do have a desk at home, but it is woefully neglected, I’m sad to say. 

5. Do you prefer to write with long hand or type? Or some other method?

9 times out of 10, I type. However, when I am struggling particularly hard with writer’s block, I’ll write long hand because, for whatever reason, switching methods jolts my brain a little bit and gets the juices flowing again. I wrote the entirety of the Kree battle and Val/Loki in the infirmary (I forget what chapter that was) long hand, among other scenes. 

6. Do you remember your first character? If so can we meet them?

My childhood is filled to the brim with embarrassing fiction. I don’t remember my first character, to be honest - I remember being in fourth grade and writing some kind of story for Young Author’s Day at school, and that’s the first thing I remember even writing, but I couldn’t tell you what the story was or who the characters were to save my life. When I was in sixth grade, I discovered S.E. Hinton’s books, and from that point on, I spiraled down into the genre of coming-of-age, tortured, sad protagonists (God, Ponyboy Curtis was my first spirit animal, talk about tragic) and I’ve never quite looked back. 

7. Where do you get your inspiration?

Where don’t I get my inspiration, would be a better question. Music is a big inspiration - sometimes I’ll hear a lyric that I want to put to a story, or a song will have a storyline that I like and that’ll get the creative juices flowing. I do get some inspiration from real life, but I shy away from writing anything too closely related to my own life - things that I pull from my life are incredibly fictionalized, but the roots are sometimes there, if that makes sense. Movies and TV shows, of course, especially with character types that I’m drawn to. Other people’s literature is a big inspiration, too. Idk, I think inspiration just comes from everywhere. Everyone and everything has a story that can be told. 

8. Do you outline a story before writing it, or does it all live in your head until the first draft gets put down?

I’m kind of 75/25 on this - 75% lives in my head and 25% is outlined, but the outline is always kind of a loose guideline that may end up completely changing by the time the words are actually on the page. I mostly use outlines to put things down tangibly when they get too cluttered in my head and I start confusing myself. I also use outlines to keep track of plot threads, to try to keep things consistent. For Sanctuary, my outline is a mixture of what I want to accomplish in each chapter and an extensive notes section on various canon I’m using, so that I can keep things straight. 

9. Where do you go/ What do you do when you’re feeling stuck?

Writing long-hand is a thing I already talked about. Other things I find helpful: going for a long drive to just sort of let myself zone out and think about the story without the pressure of sitting at the computer, listening to music ... sometimes I just put the story away completely and let it sit while I do/focus on other things, and I come back to it refreshed and ready to try again. 

10. What got you starting writing/doing Art? (Because I always love origin stories)

I don’t know - writing has just always been a part of who I am. The urge to write was something that came very naturally to me. I’m sure being a voracious reader was part of it, too - I grew up reading books like there was no tomorrow, and I was a very introverted, shy child, so I read more than I talked to people, and that just sort of naturally translated into writing stories of my own. I’ve never been a people-person in that I don’t like interacting with people much (in real life, anyway) but I like to examine and think about how people work, and it’s a strange thing but so it goes. But yeah - there’s no real “origin story” with me, just a long history of being a reclusive nerd. 

I guess this is a tagging meme but I wasn’t tagged, so if anyone out there wants to do it, feel free, I’d love to read other people’s responses if you feel like sharing them. :)

“Hey!”

I stopped dead in my tracks.

A boy with flaming red hair and bright green eyes had jumped out in front of us. Freckles covered his face and he had a huge, warm smile. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days, but his eyes were still wide and bright.

“Hi?” My best friend Justin answered. We had been making our way home when we were stopped.

“Can you guys help me with something?” He asked, turning to face the house we were in front of. It was on the smaller size, painted white with deep blue shutters.

“With what?” I questioned. Justin and I were both generally nice people, but I also wasn’t about “helping” a random stranger who just popped out of nowhere on the street. I mean, yeah, he probably wasn’t a serial killer, but I still wasn’t 100% about it.

“Come, I’ll show you.” He started off towards the house. Justin looked at me and shrugged, before following him.

“Justin! What are you doing?” I whisper yelled after him. I hesitated but ran after them. The guy led us to the backyard, where some kind of giant metal contraption stood.

“What the hell is that?”

It didn’t look like anything but a pile of junk.

“A time machine!” The red head practically squealed.

“Alright that’s it, I’m leaving.” I turned to get the hell out of here, but Justin stopped me by grabbing my hand and yanking me back. I made a face but chose to stay beside him.

“Explain, please.” Justin grinned. I couldn’t tell if he actually believed this guy or was just amusing him. Either way I was getting annoyed.

“It’s a time machine! That’s all there is to it. And I need you guys to do something very important.” The guy started typing numbers into the keyboard attached to the metal.

“Woah, wait. What is it? Does this thing even work?” Justin questioned. The guy turned to smile again.

“Of course it does!” He said as-a-matter-of-fact.

“Prove it.” I countered. I knew there was no way thing was going to work. This guy was obviously deranged.

“Hold hands.” He demanded. Justin shrugged again before taking my hands. He grabbed the other guys hand and he took mine too. I rolled my eyes. This better be good.

“And here we go!” The guy started laughing like a maniac.

Everything became a blur. I felt a huge rush of wind surround me and Justin squeeze my hand.

“No. Fucking. Way.”

I looked around at my now different surroundings. We were at the edge of a dirt road, surrounded by rickety wooden buildings. Horse drawn carriages filled the streets in front of us. The men and women were wearing clothing I had only seen in pictures.

I finally looked over at Justin and couldn’t help but laugh, circumstances aside. He was dressed as if he came straight out of one of the westerns my grandpa used to watch. The red head who had someone got us here was dressed the same.

I glanced down at my own clothing. I was wearing a long, dark brown dress. It was simple. It looked like something Laura Ingalls wore, honestly.

“How did you do this?” Justin turned to the guy, bewildered.

“Science. Now that you know this is real, will you help me out?” He smirked.

“What do you need?” I asked.

“I need you to go back in time and save two people.” He answered. I turned to the street and watched a man help a woman out of a stage coach. I couldn’t actually grasp what was happening in front of me. But it was real.

It was real.

“Why?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.

“Just please do it. I’ll explain the whole story later.” He practically begged. I wasn’t liking this idea. What if we got stuck somewhere? What about our parents? I wasn’t a big fan of this.

“Or what if we don’t?” Justin countered. The guy smiled something wicked.

“I’ll just leave you two here.” Just as he spoke, we heard a gun go off. We all whipped to face the street, were an apparent shoot out was occurring.

“Okay! Okay! We’ll do it, just get us out of here!” I screeched, trying to hide behind Justin.

The next thing I knew, we were back in the backyard.

“So, you’ll do it right?”

“Do we have a choice?” I grumbled. My head was spinning, so I took a seat on the grass.

“What do you want us to do? And why can’t you do it?” Justin asked as he sat down next to me.

“Also, what’s your name?” We had traveled through actual time with this dude, and we didn’t even know his damn name.

“Jude. Also, that’s not how it works. Makers can’t alter time. They can only send people back to do so. We can visit, prove to people in the past it does exist, but that’s it. We also can’t just tell them what happened and that’s how the change is made. I mean, we can, but that won’t stop them for doing whatever it is. They have to have a third party come in and change things somehow. It’s quite complicated, and slightly annoying, but that’s why you guys are here.” He finished. He sat down in front of us. This all sounded like bullshit, but we had literally just went to the actual old west, so what was I questioning? My head hurt just thinking about it all.

“So who are we saving and why?” Justin asked, placing a comforting hand on my knee.

“Okay, story time.” He launched into an elaborate story of who, what, when, and why. By the end, I was ready to go home and crawl into bed and never come out. But I guess that just wasn’t a choice anymore.

Jude explained he was going to go back first, prove everything, then come back for us. We watched him disappear, and I wanted to run right then. But I had this gut feeling that wouldn’t be a good idea.

It felt like hours before he returned, grinning from ear to ear. I sighed but stood up, grabbing Justin’s hands. He gave me a small smile and squeezed my hands.

“Ready?” Jude looked at Justin and I, his finger hovering over the green button. We looked at each other one last time and then nodded. I shut my eyes.

“(Y/N), look.”

I opened my eyes to find myself standing on the streets of 1960’s Tulsa. We were standing outside what I assumed to be the Curtis house, where we were supposed to be.

“Here goes nothing.” I mumbled, following Justin up the steps. He knocked on the door. Not a minute later, it opened. I recognized who it was from the pictures Jude had showed us.

“I’m assuming Jude sent you. Come in.” Darry opened the door and we slowly walked in.

The entire gang was in the living room, looking somber. I guess Jude had told them everything that was supposed to happen.

“Hi?” I waved.

“So you guys are here to save our lives, huh?” Dallas quoted the last part. I really didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t imagine what they were going through. I don’t think anyone could. “Yeah, I think so.” Justin slowly nodded.

We all talked for a few minutes, trying to get over the awkwardness. According to Jude, we still had to go the drive in that night. It had to start the same. We just had to stop them from leaving with Cherry and Marcia.

I couldn’t help but be excited, despite the circumstances. I’ve always wanted to go the drive in, but almost every single one around where we lived had shut down years ago.

We followed the guys the way there, still making small talk. They asked a little about what the future was like and what had changed. It was the weirdest conversation I’ve ever had.

We copied them and slid under fence. We silently slid into the back seats.

“What now?” Ponyboy asked after we had settled in.

“We wait, I guess.” Justin shrugged. I couldn’t help but giggle at the way he was dressed. He fit right in with the other guys, but it was just so different than what he normally wore.

“And no talking to those girls. Seriously, just don’t.” I warned. Dallas, who was sat next to me, turned to me. He threw an arm around me and moved in close.

“So does that mean I can talk to you instead?” He winked. I shoved him off, rolling my eyes. Just because I was here to save him, doesn’t mean I want him all over me. No matter how attractive he was.

“Fuck off.” I spat at him.

“Feisty, I like it.” He licked his lips and ran his eyes up and down me.

“This is going to be interesting.” Ponyboy mumbled, turning his attention to the movie.

56 + 76 with Sodapop (tysm! 💙)

It was a hot summer day in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Sodapop Curtis was working the DX all alone. Steve was spending the day with his girlfriend, Evie, and though he’d never admit it, Soda envied their relationship. He thought he was over her and moved on, but summer always reminded him of Sandy. The long days of laughter and goofing off and short nights of endless fun were all Soda could think about as he doodled on a yellow legal pad, just waiting for a costumer. Everyone in their right mind was on vacation for the holiday weekend so the rich side of town was nearly deserted. 

The fan across the room was blowing, moving side to side. Every time the artificial breeze passed Soda, hair got into his eyes. Too lazy to get up and fix the fan, he kept brushing his bangs out of his face with the pen. The legal pad in his lap was littered with Sandy’s name, as well as a quaint little beach where Ponyboy and Johnny were building sand castles, Two-Bit and Dallas were trying to kill the seagulls, Soda and Steve were attempting to drown each other in the ocean and Darry was a distance away, relaxing in the sun. Though it was only stick figures next to wavy lines, the scene was vivid in the middle child’s mind.  

“Ugh,” he groaned, the boredom getting to him. He threw the legal pad across the small room, knocking over an empty can of soda from earlier. Despite his name, Sodapop didn’t even like the carbonated beverage all that much. Like his buddy Two-Bit, he preferred iced tea and beer. He never really liked the fizziness anyway, and could never get the bubbles out. “Dammit,” he swore under his breath as a girl opened the door to come in.

“I can come back later…” She pointed with her thumb to the outside behind her, thinking Soda was frustrated by her.

“Oh no! You’re fine. I’m sorry.” He didn’t mean to offend the girl.

“I dropped a…” He realized it didn’t matter. “What’s up? How can I help you?” The girl seemed familiar but he didn’t know how.

“My check engine light is on.” She pointed to her car. It was a beautiful Chevrolet. Soda’s eyes shined as he looked at the car; he wanted to take it around for a spin. He had seen a lot of cars in his day but that one took the cake. “Earth to Soda. Come in, Soda.”

The blond shook his head. “Sorry,” he grinned at her, slightly embarrassed. “She’s beautiful.”

“Yeah, I know.” The brunette smiled and nodded. “It’s my dad’s car.”

Soda thought of his script that he had to follow when speaking to costumers. “Can I get your name?” He stepped over to the filing cabinets, looking to see if she’d been there before.

“I’m surprised you don’t remember me.“ She said. "I’m Abby, we were in the same math class." 

“Abby!” That’s how he knew her. Abby Miller. They always teamed up on projects because she was smart and she liked Soda. He thought she was cute, but there was never a spark. “How are you?”

“I’ve been good. I’d be better if my dad’s car was fixed.”

“Damn, okay.” Soda flipped through the files to find her father’s name. He pulled out the documents and tried to find the one containing her father’s information.

“How’ve you been?”

“Working hard. I think the Fourth of July is the only slow time of the year. Everyone’s on vacation.”

“I’m not.”

“I could tell.” Soda cracked another smile, being cheeky with his long time friend. “How have you been?”

“Working hard. School’s a pain in the ass but at least it’s summer." 

“Gotta summer job?" 

“Yeah. I’m a waitress over at Jay’s. You should come over sometime and visit me.”

“Are you flirting with me?” Sodapop asked as he finished filing out the blank form. 

“Maybe.“ Abby smiled, biting her tongue. Soda rolled his eyes. Every girl who walked into the DX came mostly to flirt with him. "What? Can you blame me? You’re one hell of a guy.”

"Steve’s more like Satan, if anything.” He joked and the two went out to examine the car. Soda fixed it up, no problem. When he printed the receipt, he wrote his number on the back along with his usual hours at the DX. Abby Miller, he thought to himself as he watched her drive away, waving goodbye. Okay so maybe there was a spark.
