Electro trio Raveen unveils emotive single, 'In The Middle'
Electro trio Raveen unveils emotive single, 'In The Middle'
Hailing from Montreal, RAVEEN as a trio has flourished into a united entity since releasing their debut full-length ‘Always’ in 2017. The record marks their foray into more subdued, lush songwriting and a grandiose approach to arrangement with orchestral strings, choir work and field recording. Live performances are evocative of Jeff Buckley’s dynamic peaks-and-valleys approach, while blending…

y/ndevils00 happy happy preseason to us all!!
our fierce satan spawn played split-squad tonight, which means some of my lovely boys went on a quick trip to Montreal to play against the Habs, and the other stayed back in Jersey to play against the Flyers!
i, of course, when given the choice, chose to go to Canada with Jacky and idiots 1 and 2 🫶
AND OH HOW WELL OUR BOYS DID! our Devils at home got a whopping 6-0 shutout against the gritty worship cult! congratulations sluts!
meanwhile, in MTL, these boys won 4-2!!
to start us off, Joe Gambardella got us a goal about halfway through the first period! i tried to get a picture, but he kinda hid behind best friend number 2… i think Jack is teaching the new people and i don’t like it!
then, my favorite child, Simon Nemec got a mind blowing, highlight reel goal, in which the puck bounced off the boards behind the goal net and then bounced off the goalie’s skate and into the net! with an assist from the one and only Jackson Rowden Hughes!!
best friend number 1 got a great power play goal off another assist from my oh so lovely boyfriend!
and to top it all off, that oh so lovely boyfriend got a power play goal! earning him a 3 point night! POP OFF BABY!! YOU DID SO WELL!! I’M SO PROUD OF YOU!!
altogether, your New Jersey Devils won both games with a combined 10 points! we’re SO back, baby!!

Within a timespan of just a couple of weeks, in March and April 2023, the United States presidential administration and its homeland security leaders have announced significant crackdowns on refugees and asylum seekers at both its northern and southern peripheries. These policy changes have been described by scholars, lawyers, doctors, and other advocates as “terrifying’, “dangerous”, “deadly”, and “inhumane”.
In the final days of March 2023, following the US president’s visit to Canada, the US and Canada have announced a major change to the Safe Third Country Agreement policy. Scholars have described the rule change as one that will effectively deny refugee or asylum status to many people crossing the border along the entire continent, from Atlantic to Pacific. Meanwhile, in early April 2023, a trilateral statement/agreement was announced by the leaders of the US, Colombia, and Panama, as the nations describe their intent to discourage refugee travel through the notoriously horrific Darien Gap,
---
About the US-Canada border. Excerpt:
Others have not survived. On March 31 [2023], two families perished at the Quebec-US border, including an infant and a three-year-old. [...] Why aren’t people going to official ports of  entry? The answer is that the law, specifically the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) between the US and Canada, deters people from using official border entry points because they will be turned away and denied the opportunity to make a refugee claim. Canada has acknowledged these crossings by erecting pop-up border  stations like one at Roxham Road, facilitating the movement of migrants. Quebec’s premier and main opposition leader have called for this makeshift port of entry to be shut down. And now, as part of US President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Canada, the two countries have decided to do just that, under a renegotiated STCA that came into effect starting midnight on Friday, March 24 [2023]. Now anyone crossing any point of the Canada-US land border to make a refugee claim will be turned away. They will not be able to make a refugee claim and will be sent back to the US side of the border. Until now, this agreement only applied at official land ports of entry which pushed people seeking asylum to cross at unofficial points [...]. The newly expanded STCA now applies across the entire Canada-US land border, including areas between official ports of entry and certain bodies of water. Anyone making an asylum claim within 14 days of crossing without authorisation or valid immigration status will be brought back to a US port of entry and excluded from being able to make a claim in Canada. [...] Advocates argued that the agreement not only infringes migrants’ rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but also violates Canada’s international legal obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention [...].
Text by: Jamie Liew, Petra Molnar, and Julie Young. “The new US-Canada border deal is inhumane - and deadly.” Al Jazeera. 19 April 2023. Liew is a lawyer and associate professor at University of Ottawa. Molnar is associate director of the Refugee Law Lab. Young is Canada Research Chair in Critical Border Studies at University of Lethbridge.
---
More on the US-Canada border. Excerpt:
“The United States and Canada will work together to discourage unlawful border crossings and fully implement the updated Safe Third Country Agreement,” US President Joe Biden said during an address to the Canadian parliament in Ottawa on Friday afternoon. But human rights groups said the move will not deter refugees and asylum seekers [...] but instead will push them to take riskier routes. [...] “This is very dangerous,” said Frantz Andre, spokesperson and coordinator of [...] a Montreal-based group that provides support for asylum seekers and others without immigration status. [...] Why is this happening now? Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been under political pressure domestically to respond to an increase in crossings, particularly from conservative politicians in Quebec [...].
Text by: Jillian Kestler-D’Amour. “What the new US-Canada border deal means for asylum seekers.” Al Jazeera. 24 March 2023.

The US, Colombia, and Panama announcement about the Darien Gap. Excerpt:
A US-backed plan to stop migrants from crossing the [...] Darién Gap will likely fail [...], migration experts have warned. The US Department of Homeland Security announced on Tuesday [11 April 2023] that it had brokered a deal with the Colombian and Panamanian governments to halt migrants crossing the land bridge on their journey northward to the US. The number of people traversing the lawless strip of land between Colombia and Panama has spiked to record numbers in the last two years. [...] [I]t is likely the plan would require militarisation, a scenario which Nicole Phillips, legal director of Haitian Bridge Alliance, an immigration policy non-profit, described as “terrifying”. [...] Decaying bodies of migrants are routinely found deep in the rainforest [...]. Those who survive the arduous two-week trek are at the mercy of [...] groups that frequently rob [...] vulnerable migrants. Given the risk that migrants already undergo fleeing poverty or persecution, Blaine Bookey at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies said she doubted authorities can deter them from making the trip. More likely, migrants will be pushed further underground and forced to take more dangerous routes. [...] Despite the harrowing tales of robbery [...] and death in the Darién Gap, the number of people and families making the journey surged in 2022 to record levels [...].
Text by: Luke Tyler. “‘Terrifying’: Critics decry US plan to stop migrants at Darién Gap.” The Guardian. 14 April 2023.
---
Why? Excerpt:
Facing pressure from conservatives, the Biden administration is trying to cut down on irregular migration and has set its sights on the booming foot traffic through the Darién. Currently, a [...] law, Title 42, uses the pandemic as justification to prohibit asylum claims at the US-Mexico land border, requiring Venezuelans, Nicaraguans, Haitians and Cubans to apply formally and meet certain requirements instead. [...] [B]ut the most desperate migrants often cannot meet the requisites due to the dire conditions in the countries from which they are fleeing, said Phillips. “The thought of [the US, Panama and Colombia] further militarising in order to keep migrants out is terrifying for people’s safety.” She said it was disappointing that human rights were not mentioned even once in the trilateral statement, given the dire and growing humanitarian crisis in the Darién. Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which attends to migrants needing medical assistance when they emerge from the jungle in Panama, says it [...] is “concerned” by the possible militarisation of borders. “We have seen in other countries that it can lead to more danger, not ensuring basic services and may increase suffering,” Luis Eguiluz, head of mission for MSF Colombia and Panama, said.

Half Moon Run – Music Hall of Williamsburg – November 17, 2023
Tumblr media
Half Moon Run’s fourth studio album, Salt — “a slow burn that will grow on you, with each listen revealing a new dimension to its sound” — dropped back in June, and they’ve been out on an extended North American tour in support of it since October, which brought the Montreal ethereal-pop trio to a packed Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night.

Burt Bacharach was born in Kansas City on May 12, 1928 and died Feb 8, 2023. He studied music at McGill University in Montreal. When he saw Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis perform live in New York City he knew he would pursue a career in music. His first break came in the fifties as conductor and pianist for Marlene Dietrich, touring the world, especially Brazil.
While working with Marlene, Burt met lyricist Hal David who collaborated on almost all of Burt's compositions from their chart debut late in 1957 to early 1973. Burt's final hits were That's What Friends are For by Dionne Warwick and Friends (premiered Nov 84 and spent four weeks at number one), and On My Own by Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald (premiered Mar 86 and spent three weeks at number one.) His last notable work was a 1998 Grammy winner with Elvis Costello.
Burt, with Hal, should be considered as the greatest pop composers of the 60s. His main competition would be Lennon and McCartney, and Motown's Holland-Dozier-Holland.

112: The Rabble // The Rabble Album
Tumblr media
The Rabble Album The Rabble 1967, Trans World
As late ‘60s garage rock bands go, the Rabble were about as diametrically opposed to their rivals for Anglo-Montreal beat supremacy the Haunted as it gets. The Haunted (whom I covered yesterday), aped the Stones’ swagger and sweetness, sometimes brilliantly; the Rabble wrote Mothers of Invention-esque freakouts about black potatoes and squeezing pustules. The Haunted’s self-titled LP has generic puff-piece liners notes from someone at their label extoling the fact that the band “became one of the first Canadian groups to incorporate lights into their act” (and I hear they toured all the way from Laval to Brossard in a horseless carriage!); The Rabble Album’s sleeve offers sly self-commentary like, “[This song] could be construed as being both amusing and psychotic, these terms being not strictly synonymous.”
youtube
It's not exactly a Blur versus Oasis scenario, given that neither band achieved much success outside the Canadian market or lasted more than a few years within it. But considered together, they do a better job at gesturing at the depth of a busy but mostly unheralded scene than either would individually. I also think both bands would’ve done fairly well anywhere—the Rabble in particular really had something with their hyperactive proto-prog/garage sound. They could flit with ease between Ashram blues like “Rising of the Sun” (‘a slow song, important for its lack of deep meaning’ per songwriter Mike Harris) and a blistering mini-suite like “The Crushing Hand of Mother” (‘I would also rather you violently hate the song than looked [sic] at it indifferently,’ say John Pimm and Wally O’Reilly). It’s pretty gonzo stuff, but Montrealers smoked as much weed as anyone, and enough of them knew they were lucky to have a world-class group of freaks to play their local for the Rabble to have an exciting little run.
I’m comfortable calling The Rabble Album the best Montreal pop album ever released as of 1967, and if Songs of Leonard Cohen had snatched that title by 1968, what a few months it was for the Rabble on top of the mountain. They weren’t around long enough to be a direct influence on the local music that came in their wake, but they’re an example of convergent evolution in action: when exposed to the specific liberties and pressures of Montreal, time and time again musicians turn strange in ways not quite like anywhere else in the world. Not too long ago, I recommended the Rabble to a member of Dirty Milk, one of the city’s best current bands, because they share their forerunner’s absurdist wit, elastic songs, and crunching volume. I’ll have to ask next time I see him whether he listened, but it’s nice to know (as a 56-year-old man) that the weird vein the Rabble began mining back in ’67 is still producing. The Rabble Album (originally on the TransWorld label, coincidentally a good description of Montreal in 2023) was helpfully reissued a few years back by Hungry for Vinyl, so it’s not too difficult to find at the moment. Worth the hunt!

Following last month's announcement of their new album AMAMA, Crumb has unveiled a fresh preview with the single "The Bug." Along with the new track, the band has released an engaging and playful music video directed by Haoyan of America. Additionally, Crumb has announced a headline North American tour starting in mid-July. The tour will cover 30 cities, including stops in Chicago, Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, and a hometown concert in Brooklyn. L’Rain, Vagabon, and Discovery Zone will join Crumb on select dates. The full tour schedule is available below, with tickets going on sale this Friday, April 26th, at 10 AM local time. Discussing the new single, Lila Ramani of Crumb explains: "‘The Bug’ has been part of our musical journey since the early days, before the Jinx era. It started in a motel in Nebraska where I woke up covered in bed bug bites. Unable to sleep, I roamed the motel humming what would eventually form the outro of the song. As we recorded it years later, it gained a deeper, more tender meaning—the 'bug' isn't just an insect; it can be a friend, a lover, or a persistent late-night thought." Check out “The Bug” below: AMAMA represents Crumb’s most carefree and heartfelt work to date, mixing poetic abstraction with introspective honesty and inventive soundscapes. The album showcases Crumb in a dynamic and lively mode, incorporating elements like glitchy vocals, cell phone recordings, nautical sounds, sax mouthpiece solos, distorted drum samples, and piano strings muted with Silly Putty. Set for release on May 17th through Crumb Records, the album includes the title track "AMAMA," a vibrant homage to Lila Ramani's grandmother. This track is further enhanced by a music video directed by Abraham El-Makawy, which blends Lila’s archival home footage with fan-submitted artwork, creating a poignant mosaic of nostalgia. With its blend of psychedelia, pop, jazz, and rock, AMAMA further cements Crumb's distinctive musical identity. The album, produced in Los Angeles with Johnscott Sanford and Jonathan Rado, reflects on themes of stability, connection, and clarity amidst a nomadic life. In 2023, Crumb released the single “Le Temple Volant” with Melody’s Echo Chamber, earning praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Stereogum, and others. AMAMA continues the narrative arc from their earlier works, including the self-titled EP Crumb, Locket, 2019’s Jinx, and 2021’s Ice Melt, which Rolling Stone described as "a captivating trek to the metaphysical and back down to Earth.” Upcoming Tour Dates * with L'Rain and Discovery Zone ^ with Vagabon 7/18 - Des Moines, IA @ Wooly's 7/19 - Minneapolis, MN @ Varsity Theater 7/21 - Chicago, IL @ Pitchfork Music Festival 8/20 - Philadelphia, PA @ Brooklyn Bowl * 8/21 - Silver Spring, MD @ The Fillmore Silver Spring * 8/23 - Richmond, Virginia @ The National * 8/24 - Charlotte, NC @ The Underground * 8/25 - Atlanta, GA @ Buckhead Theatre * 8/27 - Nashville, TN @ Brooklyn Bowl * 8/28 - Indianapolis, IN @ Deluxe * 8/30 - Detroit, MI @ Saint Andrew's Hall * 8/31 - Toronto, ON @ The Concert Hall * 9/01 - Montreal, QC @ Théâtre Beanfield * 9/04 - Brooklyn, NY @ Brooklyn Paramount * 9/05 - New Haven, CT @ Toad's Place * 9/06 - Boston, MA @ Roadrunner * 10/03 - Santa Cruz, CA @ The Catalyst ^ 10/04 - Oakland, CA @ Fox Theater ^ 10/05 - Sacramento, CA @ Ace of Spades ^ 10/07 - Salt Lake City, UT @ The Depot ^ 10/09 - Denver, CO @ The Mission Ballroom ^ 10/11 - Dallas, TX @ Ferris Wheelers ^ 10/12 - Houston, TX @ White Oak Music Hall ^ 10/13 - San Antonio, TX @ Aztec Theatre ^ 10/15 - Austin, TX @ Emo's ^ 10/17 - Albuquerque, NM @ El Rey Theater ^ 10/18 - El Paso, TX @ Lowbrow Palace ^ 10/21 - Santa Ana, CA @ Observatory OC ^ 10/22 - San Diego, CA @ Observatory North Park ^ 10/23 - Los Angeles, CA @ The Wiltern ^ Read the full article

BLP KOSHER SHARES NEW VIDEO SINGLE "VIRGIN EARS"
Tumblr media
BLP KOSHER has just shared his new single "Virgin Ears", along with an accompanying music video. Arriving on the heels of BLP KOSHER's breakthrough year in 2023, "Virgin Ears" is already his third release of 2024. After dropping his second full-length project Bars Mitzvah, which was backed by the hit single "Special K" (55M+ Streams) and features from DJ Premier, Luh Tyler and Trapland Pat,BLP KOSHER performed at Lyrical Lemonade's Summer Smash Festival and headed out on his first headlining tour, “The Dreidel That Never Stopped Spinning”, performing sold-out shows in major cities like L.A., Chicago, Atlanta and Toronto. After kicking off the year with the release of "Dreidel Bop" (3.8M+ Streams) and "Violent Lullaby" featuring Yung Lean (5M+ Streams), "Virgin Ears" continues BLP KOSHER's hot streak that's extended into 2024. Over the eerie piano loop and knocking drumline, BLP KOSHER flaunts his endless supply of clever punchlines – "I've been late to the party / 130 on the dash, with a glock like I'm Carti / Filled the gaps, then I'ma bridge it, wish 'em good luck Charlie", he raps in the track's memorable hook. After performing at Rolling Loud LA in March, BLP KOSHER will be hitting the road for another headlining tour – The Dreidelman Saga Tour, kicking off in Santa Ana, CA on 4/3.
youtube
Taking the internet by storm beginning in 2022 through his acrobatic wordplay, BLP KOSHER has quickly surpassed 100 Million Streams while receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone and XXL and being co-signed from DJ Premier, BabyTron and Camila Cabello. Having now created a name for himself within the broader pop culture lexicon with a slew of hit tracks like the Cole Bennett-directed, BabyTron-featuring, “Mazel Tron” (35M+ Streams) and “Special K” (55M+ Streams), BLP KOSHER was quick to capitalize on his success, proving that his star power expands far beyond the virality with the release of Bars Mitzvah last year. The album features head-turning collaborations, such as with the legendary DJ Premier on “Endless”—a figure who KOSHER has always looked up to, and who has now blessed him with one of his signature scratched-up beats. BLP KOSHER has quickly cemented himself as a serious player in the contemporary Hip-Hop landscape, and is looking forward to keeping his momentum going with each subsequent release.

Céline Dion stepped out at the 2024 Grammy Awards amid her ongoing health issues. The pop icon, 55, made a rare public appearance at the 66th annual Grammys by stepping out to present the final award of the night. Dion graced the stage at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles to present album of the year--an award she first won 27 years ago. The five-time Grammy winner, who was diagnosed with the rare and incurable neurological disorder stiff person syndrome (SPS) in 2022, was greeted by a standing ovation from the star-filled crowd.
Dion has been a favorite among the recording academy for decades. The Canadian star is a five-time Grammy winner--taking home her first Grammy in 1992--and a 16-time total nominee. Dion's appearance at the awards ceremony saw her stepping out in public for the first time since she attended a hockey game in Las Vegas between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Montreal Canadiens last year in November. The sporting event marked her first public appearance in three and a half years.
Although it was a rare sighting for the music legend, she took the opportunity to perform. The "My Heart Will Go On" singer first revealed to fans that she had been with diagnosed a rare neurological disease that can cause debilitating muscle spasms in late 2022. At the time, she shared what she had been going through in a moving video posted to Instagram in late 2022, in which she explained the condition and that it meant she would have to postpone her tour dates.
According to the Stiff Person Syndrome Foundation, the condition affects the central nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. "Patients can be disabled, wheelchair-bound, or bed-ridden, unable to work and care for themselves," they say, adding that the neurological disease with autoimmune features can include symptoms like "hyper-rigidity, debilitating pain, chronic anxiety," and muscle spasms "so violent they can dislocate joints and even break bones." As the songstress had to make the tough decision in May 2023 to cancel tour dates for the foreseeable future, she has since revealed that she'll be sharing an intimate documentary with fans about her recent challenges. The project titled I Am: Céline Dion will be directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Irene Taylor and released sometime on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
In September, the superstar's sister, Claudette, shared an update about her sister's health in an interview with Hello! Canada. “She’s doing everything to recover,” she told the outlet. “She’s a strong woman.”
