Ok genuinely impressed with the Jin emperor holding onto the piece of burning paper for so long and managing to not get singed. Also impressed that the fire managed to go out before hitting the carpet (and thus preventing a palace fire... like if anything... I feel like these are signs that TTJ's birth is a good omen... just saying)

I feel for Yingxin though. She didn't actually volunteer for this (like she did, but she was mostly following the lead of someone she trusted). She was still so young and had so much life and possibility ahead of her. And then everything turned to darkness. And it's understandable that she would be freaked out by little TTJ. Like Lan'An is the exception, not the norm. I do feel like Yingxin is trying her best to do right by her princess, her friend/senior, and the little prince...

Hmm I wonder if Lan'an actually lied and only saved herself or if something else happened. I hope they close this bit of the storyline.

Charlie Harris: Bro got the cartoon main characther treatment, but I love how the show executed his powers (he speaks with patients' spirits). Deserved sm better in the series, and I mean it.

Alex Reid: She's such a sweetheart, deserved sm better in life, I loved her dynamic with Maggie sm

Joel Goran: THE FAN FAVORITEEE!! There are scenes that reminded me sm of Douxie from ToA for some reason, definally would trust my life on him, too bad he wasn't there for too long :(

Maggie Lin: Words cannot even describe how much I adore Maggie sm. She's such a nice friend and doctor, her and Sydney are soo cute together and I loved her dynamic with both Alex and Joel!

Dawn Bell: The Randolph Bell of Saving Hope basically: Her characther developtment is so much deserved, her and Zach are adorable. Deserved sm better in the series too

Zach Miller: I like how sarcastic he is. Him and Dawn are adorable together.

Shahir Hamza: THE SILLY!! As an autistic person myself, I absolutely adore him in the series and I love how the show projects that! I would love to see more autism representation later in the future 🫶

Sydney Katz: Her and Maggie are so cute together, but I don't like the times she ghosted Maggie before moving to London with her. (Saying this like around S3 - S4). Overall she's alright.

Dev Sekara: Him and Cassie are alr. Love his sense of humour. Would love to see more of him

Cassie Williams: She's an alright characther. There are scenes I loved her and there are scenes I didn't like her, but again, she's an alright characther with a bright future ahead of her. Love her sunshine energy

Dana Kinney: My 2nd fav from the series! Also deserved sm better in the series. Liked that she decided to switch to Trauma, you go queen! 👑

Asha Mirani: Nothing much to say since she suddently disaspear after S4. If she stayed much longer, she'll definally have a good future ahead of her. Deserved sm better in the series.

Billy Scott: Bro's just like me if I was a doctor. He's alright, but like Cassie, there are scenes I love him and scenes I hate him.

Jackson Wade (??): You know I gotta add him here, he's iconic and deserved more scenes.

Jeremy Bishop: Such a cool characther, reminds a lot of Joel just without accent, his dynamic with Alex was awesome and I liked his return in ep 16!

Kristine Fields: I like the idea that she's has the same powers as Charlie, but despite this, I'm not a fan of her. I didn't like that she was pushing Charlie on having a relationship with her and even lying to him. I'm not going to mention when she sent an army of ghosts on Charlie's head.

Aos sí is the general name of the irish supernatural creatures i was talking abt and as attached as i am to tam lin (ridiculously attached possibly favorite folk story ever ) the irish folktales appeal more like ok Ghillie Dubh lives in a tree n if i were a fairie id live in woods or under a hill or in a cave .... I think its bc under the waterfall got its mitts on me before the perilous gard book i got at some garage sale or salvation army and bc of that movie i always chided people to be careful wht they wish because i was So autistic as a child just behavior from any media i watched n soaked up like a sponge

There is one thing that you mention a lot and it is Bi-Han's lack of social skills and well I do not agree at all, that is, Bi-Han as with Sektor is quite introverted but I do believe that the Lin kuei taught them social skills to be able to infiltrate them among the people during missions. Bi-Han I think he has manners and social skills but he doesn't hide when he doesn't like someone. He was sarcastic with Quan chi but at no time did he insult him or refuse to do his job

I do not have any doubt that Bi-Han’s speech patterns depend on whom he is interacting (x) but as much as honesty and straightforwardness are in itself valuable traits, frankness is not always an acceptable choice to rely on. Having social skills helps to navigate how to behave and talk to different people to not overstep or break generally accepted norms and in result, to build a healthy relationship, or in case of living in a strict warrior society, to not get in trouble. Bi-Han for me lacks in this department, especially in mentioned interaction with Quan Chi, because he was not on equal ground with the sorcerer yet had this borderline challenging attitude. And most likely yes, some of the rudeness came from not liking nor respecting the suspicious guy that already proved to be some insidious bastard for hiring another man for the same job. But the thing is, he wasn’t there to question a lucrative customer that was personally approved by the Grandmaster and he should keep his accusations and rude remarks to himself, not throw it into the sorcerer's face just like that.

I mean, as much as dark and evil Lin Kuei are, customer service is a vital part of the earning money process. Bi-Han wasn’t there as equal to Grandmaster (the superior whom he swore to obey) nor Quan Chi (approved client). Between these three characters, Sub-Zero was just a tool to finish an already made transaction, no one was interested in what he thought or felt at that moment. As much as the accusation to some degree may be forgiven, since Quan Chi openly antagonized Sub-Zero by calling Lin Kuei the ninja (an intended insult) and admitted to hiring Shiray Ryu (the enemy of Lin Kuei), he shouldn’t be so aggressive nor so open. It toned down once Grandmaster stopped their argument. Even then, Bi-Han could - should - ask about the mission in a more polite or at least neutral way, instead of “If it's so precious, why don't you get it yourself?”, since his superior made it clear Sub-Zero is gonna do another job for the client (“Now you will use the map on your next mission. Quan Chi has once again retained your services”).

The whole situation feel to me like Grandmaster promised Quan Chi the best man for the job but said man had this “fuck you” attitude from the start. Sub-Zero represented Lin Kuei but instead of the professional and obedient subordinate of Grandmaster there was an abrasive warrior who called Quan Chi on his lies and backed down only because his boss had enough of his attitude and the pointless argument. Not the best social awareness if you ask me.

Bi-Han wasn’t any more polite to Raiden (“That's it? Not even a thank you?”) and either deliberately provoked Scorpion during the Tournament or he was simply brutally honest about not caring about Shirai Ryu’s fate. Which, considering what he knew about the massacre, Scorpion’s obsession about him and just heard Hanzo’s promise to not kill him, he was stubbornly arrogant or really lacked empathy or good understanding of emotional impact his words may have on his sworn enemy. Considering how Bi-Han is described as “the most cunning” above all, we know he is pretty intelligent. But his harsh, abrasive, often confrontational behaviour makes me think he is good with cold logic, not exactly with empathy and because of that, he is not always reading the situation well and may “forget his place” when dealing with people he does not respect or care about or outright provoke them in the worst way. The whole argument with Quan Chi in the first place shouldn’t even happen because really, it wouldn’t be the first time an outsider (client) didn't care about the assassin's life and saw him as just a tool. Grandmaster himself wasn’t bothered nor surprised by Quan Chi’s deal with Shirai Ryu and so Bi-Han’s outburst is even more out of place in my opinion.

How much of this is Bi-Han’s intention to be a rude bastard and how much came from limited social skills (and maybe from introverted nature?) is of course up to debate. But to be fair, all cryomancers have this cheeky and passive-aggressive attitude in common (Frost for example seems like being constantly angry at everyone and doesn’t hold her sharp tongue, younger Kuai Liang literally disturbed Mortal Kombat last Tournament and told Shao Kahn to give him murderer of brother, Conquest!Sub-Zero was no less stubborn and asocial). I do see cryomancers in general as the asocial, aromantic & asexual (maybe even autistic to some degree?) people whose natural coldness may have handicapped sense of social norms and the fact that they are trained killers (thus have empathy dulled even more) don’t help at all.

At the same time, I strongly believe that not every warrior was constantly or even often working undercover and Lin Kuei used its members adequately to their skills. Some are better at spying (thus are better at interacting with people to get the needed information), some are better killers (whose interaction with people doesn't matter as long as the job is finished). There is not enough source material to say for sure what was Bi-Han’s specialization but Mythologies: Sub-Zero strongly suggest is was actually assassination and theft, as we were told by Grandmaster (“Once again, our most cunning assassin and thief is successful.”). The known jobs he did involved breaking into heavily guarded places (Shaolin Temple, Temple of Elements) to steal artifacts and killing people on the way. There was no need for Bi-Han to have any social skills nor during the Mortal Kombat Tournament, when he was hired exactly to eliminate (kill) Earthrealm’s Champions. Of course, this is barely the tip of the iceberg, more or less the last year of Bi-Han’s life, but if he truly was one of the clan's best, sending him on long-term undercover missions could be a waste of an opportunity for profitable earnings. I mean, stealing and killing are usually short-termed jobs, the “go in and get out” as fast as possible to not leave any trace behind. Those jobs of course also take time for proper preparation but because of its specific nature, a warrior can be sent from one place to another almost immediately, especially if the lucrative customer (like Shang Tsung or Quan Chi) needs to solve an urgent problems quickly. The game and movies are separated sources, but Mortal Kombat (2021) seems too put Bi-Han mainly on the assassination jobs or staying at Shang Tsung’s side than anything truly involding good understanding of social ettiquete; beside the sorcerer, Bi-Han did not interact much with other people, even with his own allies. Then there is the possibility that Bi-Han could work ultimately more in lawless, wild Outworld than modern Earthrealm which also would affect his behaviour and sense of social norms.

I believe Bi-Han took some undercover missions, but I see him more like operating in the city to do some quick dirty jobs and moving to another target than staying in one place for months while playing “normal” human being. That way he was more useful to clan by earning good money in short period of time and maybe correcting faults of other warriors (supervising them) or killing Shirai Ruy / enemy’s agents along the way. He probably could fit into society for a specified period of time if that was absolutely necessary but I don’t think it happened often. And even then, he most likely kept to himself because Bi-Han is introverted by nature.

At the end of day, the coldness and social detachment was a useful trait for a killer and murdering was most likely Sub-Zero’s expertise so forcing him to spend months on anything else seems to me like wasting both his potential and good job offers. So the Grandmaster (Lin Kuei) could tolerate Sub-Zero’s natural frankness because his social skills weren’t ever the priority.

Bi-Han’s abrasive ways to communicate with others, lack of empathy, the visible isolating himself leads me to think he lacks social skills (and maybe even could fit somewhere on autistic spectrum). At this point of time, I think cryomancers in general are dense when it comes to social norms and interacting with people and I don’t mean it as they are stupid or unable to learn. They just have different (mental?) mindset about such things than other people, even other Lin Kuei warriors. Of course, it is just my take on the matter so anyone can disagree : )

(Ironically, I have the impression that Sektor would do better in long-term undercover work than Bi-Han but he is hardly better at pretending to be a normal human being. The difference is that he is the quiet type easy to overlook while anyone not familiar with Bi-Han's specific behaviour will see him as the rude bastard.)

Gender Natures List Nov. 2020

(EDIT: DO NOT REBLOG. Likes are fine. I'm going to make a new post that's better to help avoid the confusion this has caused some folx. Thank you and stay tuned. ♡) Y’all have probably seen terminology like “FIN” or “MIN” or “AGIN” or other acronyms ending in -IN. These are categories describing different distinct gender traits, which is helpful to have for many reasons. It has become the primary way gender traits are generally categorized and many new and lesser known ones have developed to describe existing gender traits, so I am taking the time to list them all (and make flags for some without them, in another post). I will give descriptions and extra info for some of the traits if I feel clarification is needed. Some of these I coined, many I didn’t.

FIN- Feminine In Nature.

MIN- Masculine In Nature.

LIN- Androgynous (the L comes from Male/Female) In Nature. Includes natures that are both FIN and MIN, or those which blend the two natures.

AGIN- Agenine/Agender In Nature.

NIN- Neutral In Nature.

UIN- Unknowable* In Nature. UIN is unique in that the “U” refers to several similar adjectives which are used interchangeably, although I personally use “unknowable” as the default for ease and generality. It can also stand for uncertain, unquantifiable, undefinable, unidentifiable, unexplainable and undeterminable. This gender nature differs from questioning in that the UIN individual does in fact know that the nature of their gender is inherently unknowable. I pronounce it simply as “un” but this isn’t official as I did not coin it.

EPIN- Epicene In Nature

YIN- Yonderine In Nature

AIN- Aporine/Aporagender In Nature.

ABIN- Abinary In Nature. This includes several other natures under it like AIN, XIN, AGIN, and NIN and therefore isn’t a specific category, but it has been coined and can be helpful for more general use so I am listing it.

XIN- Xenine/Xenogender In Nature.

AMIN- Ambiguous In Nature. (pronounced amm-in)

USIN- Confusing In Nature. (pronounced “usin’“, like “using” contracted)

APIN- Apathetic In Nature. (pronounced “appin”)

QUIN- Queer In Nature. Also includes genders such as genderpunk or genderf*ck, and other intentionally and/or prominently non-normative genders. And includes genderqueer of course. (Pronounced "kwin")

AUIN- Autonomous In Nature. I pronounce it “aww-in” but I didn’t coin it so I won’t claim that as “official” or anything. EDIT: coiner gender-resource pronounces it the same way.

PLIN- Partial In Nature. Basically demigender type terms.

CIN- Collect/Collected In Nature

POIN- Pangender/Polygender/Omnigender In Nature. (pronounced “pon”)

UXIN- Flux In Nature.

IDIN- Fluid In Nature.

FLIN- Fluix In Nature. Combination of UXIN and IDIN.

OIN- Outherine In Nature.

OKIN- Otherkin/Kingender In Nature.

ROIN- Neurogender In Nature. (pronounced “rowan”/”row-in”)

AUTIIN- Autistic/Autigender In Nature. Subtype of ROIN.

FEIN- Female In Nature. Female is different from feminine.

MAIN- Male In Nature. Male is different from masculine.

NUIN- Null In Nature.

VOIN- Void In Nature. Can’t find the post now but I swear I saw it coined so I’m listing it. I think it was coined in the same post as NUIN.

It is possible that there are signified traits I’m not aware of that are not listed here, but regardless, there are still some qualities to be signified in the future. If you have questions about any of the traits, you can search for them on major gender blogs or message me and I will clarify. (Except OIN bc I’m still trying to figure it out myself lmao like I know the definition but not what it *is* or examples etc)

Mission Gemini

@sprghosthunter (zelda3469) here! I had the pleasure of preparing a gift for @snavej! She did say in her request that she loves a good AU. Well, I hope this space themed AU will be good enough once it’s finished. And I hope I am not doing a terrible job of fulfilling her request to make Noll explicitly autistic and asexual. As of right now, this is a work in progress. Below is the first complete chapter (and please excuse any errors as I have failed to have this edited). My goal is to have this whole fic completed by August since I have some serious motivation to get this whole thing written asap, so be on the lookout at fanfiction.net!

She was in a world of pain. Heat pulsated through her veins as her head spun. Her stomach churned when she leaned forward in a desperate attempt to relieve herself of the burning agony. Strong, steady hands held her in place after she had fallen to her knees. With blurring vision she lifted her head. Her mouth hung open, but she was unable to make a sound.

The convulsions started soon after her knees had dug into the sun baked sand. The two masked soldiers maintained their grip as they glanced at one another. A third knelt before the twitching woman, observing her flushed face. He watched as beads of sweat collected at her hairline and as tears streamed down her hot cheeks. Beneath her stringy, ragged bangs dark brown eyes brightened. The color of her eyes lightened as streaks of green and azure blue tainted her irises.

“She’s another one, like the brat that got away. She’ll survive the serum,” spoke the soldier staring into her face. “We need to return to Nergal. The emperor will be most pleased we have found someone else.”

“And what of the remaining peasants? Is there any need to continue searching for another?”

“She is the only other inhabitant of the Geminian System that has ever survived. The odds are low we will find another here. I suggest we eradicate the planet entirely. No one will miss Zeta Geminorum C.”

All three soldiers looked at one another before nodding in agreement. Their young prisoner managed a yell in protest as her body continued to tremble.

“No! You can’t!”

They focused their attention on the woman again. The grip on her shoulders tightened as the soldier in front of her reached out to take her cheek in his hand. When his gloved fingers brushed against her skin the woman shook her head.

Gasping, as a clump of her hair was yanked, she snapped her gaze to the soldier. She was unable to see his eyes through his dark, shiny mask. She was only able to see a reflection of her terrified expression.

As she attempted to speak again the sensation that made her blood like it was boiling intensified. She sucked in a breath and her body crumpled forward. The soldiers all released their hold on her, allowing her to crash into the ground. Grains of sand dug into her forehead at the time of impact, and she squeezed her eyes shut. She began coughing, as she had unintentionally inhaled the arid soil.

“Get her on board immediately,” ordered the soldier that had been kneeling. He rose to full height, smirking behind his mask. “We’ll prepare for takeoff within the hour.”

Crimson lights flashed and alarms blared throughout the ship, sending the crew into a frenzy. Many had abandoned their duties to crowed the bleach tinted corridors. As the men and women aboard the Lugalirra shoved each other through the halls, the captain sat in the bridge, mute. The ringing drone from the ship’s emergency system he had initiated seconds before sounded distant. His sight was set on the window ahead of him, where an image of an updated map from the navigational system was projected. As his slender fingers lingered over the control panel he tightened his jaw. Never had he expected such a move from his opposition…nor did he fully understand it.

His first mate standing to his left, and two other trusted members of his crew standing behind him, the captain inhaled deeply. As he expelled the stale air in his lungs he stiffened his posture. He touched a finger to the panel and watched carefully as the area interest on the map expanded.

“This confirms it…” he whispered, eyes still trained on the map. “It really happened.”

“How?! How can they do that! I didn’t think it was possible!” shouted one of the crew members. He leaned over the captain, reaching for the toggle switch. The captain slapped his hand away.

“There is no need to witness it again, Takigawa.”

“But Captain Shibuya-”

The captain angled his head back and glared, “I understand that it must be difficult for you to accept. It wasn’t a mistake, and it was confirmed via the navigational system. I’m afraid you will not find any evidence that this tragedy was a hoax.”

“It was my home!”

The four men sat in silence as the sirens continued to resonate. Glowing lights bathed the bridge with a red hue. They cast dark shadows across the captain’s features as he maintained a stern visage.

“Brown,” spoke Captain Shibuya, “escort Takigawa to the lower deck.” The shorter of the men standing behind the captain nodded. He took his comrade’s arm and urged him to move back.

“I’m not leaving.”

“There is no need for your presence with your current state of mind. As of this moment, you serve no use to me.”

Takigawa lurched forward, a hand raised. His attempt to smack the youthful captain was thwarted by his fellow mate.

“There isn’t any need for violence, Takigawa. You know the captain has a point. It’s best you take yourself out of this situation for now,” said John Brown. He loosened his hold on Takigawa slightly as he closed his eyes. “Come on, let’s go.”

The larger man refused to move as John nudged him. He held his clenched fists at his side as he cast his gaze down. A dry laugh escaped his lips.

“No need for violence? Did you not just see what happened?”

“I meant-”

Takigawa interrupted John, “An entire planet was destroyed! And every single life on that planet was lost! Now you’re telling me this isn’t the time for violence?! This is time for a revolution! Waiting any longer would be foolish! To know they can just…obliterate an entire people like that…”

Sighing, the captain crossed his arms. He returned his focus to the center window, studying the holographic map splayed over the glass.

“To begin a revolution at this moment would be foolish. It is highly unlikely that any civilians in the empire will learn of this event. If there were to be uprisings, they would not be of substantial size. They would start small. Anyone, or any planet associated with one, would likely meet a fate similar to Zeta Geminorum C. A successful revolution needs to be carefully cultivated. The people must also have a figure to which they can look for hope. Unfortunately, no such figure exists as of now.”

“So we’re just going to sit back and watch them take out planet after planet?!”

Holding a hand to his face, Captain Shibuya rolled his eyes, “You don’t seem to understand. There is currently no groundwork for a large-scale rebellion. If we were to instigate uncoordinated uprisings now there would be a massive number of casualties. It would serve as a warning to others that might be inspired to join the cause. The support for a rebellion must be large enough that the empire can’t simply annihilate every threat without endangering its own economy and standing as a galactic power. Until there is enough underground support, there is nothing of consequence that can be done.”

“Then broadcast this to the whole damn empire! That’ll gain plenty of support!”

The first mate, Lin, spoke in place of the captain, “Yes, you are correct, but it would also lead to many unorganized protests. Lives would be wasted due to initial reactions of some citizens. People like you, Takigawa, would act blindly and rashly. That wouldn’t do any good in starting a revolution. It would give the empire the opportunity to make an example of those that cross them.”

“But-”

“Enough of this,” the captain didn’t allow Takigawa the chance to continue his argument. “Brown, escort Takigawa out, now. And do not allow him back in here until he has gotten his emotions under control.”

Scrambling, John pushed against Takigawa. He was desperate to get him out before the situation tensed further. Once he managed to get Takigawa a few steps back before Lin moved to assist him. After the two left the bridge with Takigawa between them, the captain stood. The navy tails of his coat licked at the back of his heels as he walked to the window. He gazed through the transparent map and out at the stars. Wondering what Urado’s motive was in destroying a planet so recklessly he brushed a hand through his dark hair.

Captain Shibuya was aware that there had been no talk of uprisings on Zeta Geminorum C. Takigawa had once told him that the planet’s inhabitants tried to remain neutral after the fall of the monarchy. There were those that did resent the empire, of course, but most of them opted to stay silent to live out their lives quietly. A good number did join the Pollux Pirates when Captain Shibuya began recruiting members for the sake of a better future… Really, the captain had Takigawa to thank for convincing a solid third of his crew to join…

Regardless, there didn’t appear to be a logical reason as to the sudden genocide. There was no point to prove that Captain Shibuya could see.

As he turned back, Captain Shibuya squinted. The constant flickering of the red lights was bothering him, however, it did remind him that he needed to address his entire crew. They needed to know of the events that had transpired, as many of them once called a plant that ceased to exist home.

Captain Shibuya returned to the control panel and swiped his hand across it. The projection of the map vanished, and the system alarms were silenced. A section of the panel opened with a hiss, and a small camera rose to the level of the captain’s eye. He stepped back as it hovered. A light embedded to the lower right of the lens blinked green three times prior to turning solid orange.

With a completely stoic face, the captain began his broadcast to the crew. He maintained a level tone as he spoke.

“As your captain, it is my obligation to inform you all of the egregious actions the Geminian Empire has taken in the name of their emperor, Urado, just only moments ago. We have all witnessed the ruthless nature of the empire since the downfall of the federation, yet these latest atrocities have set a new, alarming precedent.” He paused, wanting to make certain he had everyone’s attention. “It is imperative that we continue with our mission to dismantle the empire in order to prevent future catastrophes.”

Another pause.

“I offer my deepest sympathies to all of you that once lived on Zeta Geminorum C, as it has been permanently eradicated by the Geminian Military. The reasoning behind the destruction of this planet remains unclear. Though many of you are likely devastated by this fact, and wish to take immediate action, I must order that each and everyone of you keep this news secret. I fear that a similar events may ensue if the general population of the empire were to learn of this massacre. So I repeat: I order you all to keep this secret. This matter is of great importance, and therefore I will not be merciful to anyone that dares to defy me.”

“You’re damn lucky there wasn’t a mutiny,” Lin scolded his captain. “You do realize that more than sixty percent of your crew detests you at present, yes?”

“But do they detest me more so than Urado?”

“Kazuya, that isn’t the point. You’re walking a thin line at present. If you make one single mistake it could very well cost you your life. I understand that everyone aboard needed to be made aware of the situation, but I think it was a mistake for you to make such a bold threat.”

Slouched in his chair, the captain crossed his arms and shrugged, “I had no choice. They had to know what happened. I couldn’t hide that kind of information from them, especially once Takigawa found out. If this news were to leak to the general public, from us, things would not end well. Of course, we want to preserve as many lives as possible. But if the information were to leak before any announcement, if the empire announces anything, it would be obvious that we have some to their private channels. It took me far too long to get into them once. I cannot imagine the amount of time we would waste if I had to repeat the process. We would lose contact with Madoka. Those channels are our only link to her, and she is too valuable an asset to lose.”

Lin had no retort. The captain’s points were valid, but he was still on thin ice. It worried Lin that Kazuya didn’t appear to take his own safety into consideration the majority of the time. It was almost always and afterthought….

“I’ll be careful,” Kazuya made eye contact with Lin. “You have my word.”

Staring into the captain’s violet blue eyes, Lin slowly spoke, “Don’t do anything stupid.”

With a raised brow Kazuya replied, “I already gave you my word, or are you deaf? I’ll be careful.”

Night Singing

Dedicated to grownups-are-the-real-monsters "When you walk away! You don't hear me say! Please, oh baby, don't go! Simple and Clean is the way That you're making me feel tonight It's hard to let it go". Stuart George Redman did not expect to be awoken in the middle of the goshdarn night by the sound of his crush belting out some pre-apocalyptic pop song to the high heavens. They were almost at Hemingford Home now, having just passed some town that seemed to be more cornfields than houses and didn't seem to have a population over the age of eighteen. Joe had fallen asleep next to Lucy and Fran, Tom Cullen and Nick Andros were off scouting ahead for resources with Susan and Dayna, Glen Bateman was burying his head in some novel about a Victorian love triangle (Glendon Pequod Bateman was the last person Stu would ever suspect of being a Paul Sheldon fan), Judge Ferris was maintaining their campfire, Nadine was sleeping sound for the first time in days, and Harold was off somewhere else because of an incident where he had gotten drunk on old beers while they were resting in a decaying old bar and proceeded to vomit all over Stu's clothes. And Lawson Jonathan Underwood was off singing. Loudly. And badly. Stu walked carefully up behind Larry and said "You know, it's a good thing Nick is deaf, cause otherwise he would downvote your song faster than you can say 'Simon Cowell'". Larry turned around and sighed. "It's not actually my song, Stu. It's from a video game called 'Kingdom Hearts'". "I've heard of it" Stu said, "Is that the one where you play as some kind of Old West gunslinger?" " No, Stu" Larry responded, "It's a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy. Used to play those games all the time before what happened...happened". "Never played games as a kid" Stu said, "My mom could barely afford to keep our house, let alone buy us electronic playthings". "You missed out Stu my man" Larry said, "Man you missed out". "I guessed as much" Stu said, weeping a little at the thought of a world gone forever. Larry Underwood wrapped his arm around Stu Redman's broad back and tried to wipe away his future husband's tears. "Look Stu, I can't pretend everything's gonna be fine. I'd be legitimately surprised if there are more than like 2,000,000 folks left in the whole of America, and I'd be lying if I said the nightmares don't upset and horrify me just like they upset and horrify everyone else. However, I still hope everything will be okay in the end. Maybe we'll all become folk heroes to our descendants, like King Arthur or Wyatt Earp". "Sometimes, Larry, I wonder if we'll even make it through the next winter". "If our ancestors could survive with little more than spears and skins, Stuart my love, I think we can survive once we have a community". "To be fair, Lin-Manuel Springsteen" Stu responded, "Most of our Paleolithic ancestors wore far more clothing than your son". Larry burst out laughing and holding his head in his hands, the sounds of his mirth echoing through the wastelands around them. "Glad I made you laugh, Law" Stu said. "It wasn't just your joke, Stuart" Larry replied, "I also thought of something else. Before Captain Trips went down, there were all these ridiculous people who went around claiming vaccines caused their children to become autistic and thus they were willing to let their own freaking kids die rather than 'risk' them becoming neurodivergent. And now most of those dumbasses are deader than the dinosaurs while our little family of neurodivergent people survived and are set to build a new society out west". Stu thought about Larry's comments for a while and realised that over half of their group (Stu himself, Nick, Tom, Glen, Fran, Joe, possibly Lucy and/or Nadine) were somewhere on the Autism Spectrum (Stu had never been able to tell the difference between Asperger's and regular Autism) while Larry himself had talked earlier about his experiences with ADHD and how his mentor Rich Tozier had taught him to deal with it when he was a teenager in California. (The rebuilding of civilisation has fallen to the freaks and outcasts of the old world) All around Stu and Larry, the wind howled its mournful song and the coyotes sang their hymns to their beloved moon. The air was growing cold now, and soon it would be time for the travellers to get their rest before continuing inwards step by step and mile by mile to Boulder, Colorado. Stu and Larry walked together back to the spot where Stu had been sleeping before Larry awoke him and lay down together in the cool night air and upon the dusty ground. "You know Stu, I kinda came to hate 'Baby can you dig your man' over time. I'm proud of making it and I'm glad it caught on, but after a while it became the only thing people wanted to hear from me. Anytime I tried to do something more experimental or risky, the crowds would not let me do it until I'd sang that goddamn song. I'm kinda glad I no longer have to put up with those fans anymore". Stu chuckled at this comment. It made him remember why he had never cared for interacting with other people back in Arnette. "Good night, Law" Stu said. "Good night, Stuart" Larry replied as they fell asleep together, him and Stu holding hands as tight as they could.

quick question how canon is your wuko stuff?

Quick you say? Quick? Heh. I don’t really do quick.

Well, if we’re going to get technical…none of my work is strictly canonical because Wuko is not actually a canon thing. I mean, people can go on about subtext and how well the characters suit each other and such but the reality is that Bryke clearly accepts and indeed even includes openly same-sex couples in canon (see: TLOK comics) but have chosen not to make Wuko canon. I don’t know what to tell you, you’d have to take it up with them. (Yes, I’m salty.)

But I am assuming you mean canon outside of the whole Wuko is actually a headcanon thing, so moving on!

For starters, none of my fic is comic-compliant - which, by the way, I’ve tagged on AO3. That’s because I wrote the first one over 3 years ago and obviously there were no comics to be compliant with. Since I have not, for the most part, enjoyed the TLOK comics at all I will not be going back into my previously written fic to edit it into being comic-compliant. None of my fic takes the TLOK comics into consideration at all.

I also wrote some of my fic - most notably, Please Excuse My Penmanship - before Bryke’s commentary about Prince Wu was released on Book 4′s DVD. Specifically, the parts where they threw out vague references to him being in either boarding school or at Republic City University when the Red Lotus killed Queen Hou-Ting as well as the fact that he requested Mako to be his bodyguard after seeing his picture in the paper. In all of my fics the assumption is that Wu was raised as the Crown Prince and lived a very sheltered life in the Palace until the day that Hou-Ting was assassinated and he was spirited away to Republic City by the Dai Li; also in my fic Lin Beifong assigned Mako to Wu for reasons of her own. So if you are looking for fic that adheres to those two bits of commentary by Bryke then you’ll be disappointed in mine.

If you are looking for fic that takes place during the show and is canon-compliant (short of Wu being in RC at school before Book 3 and demanding Mako specifically as his bodyguard) then my collection The Prince and the Bodyguard will probably appeal.

If you are looking for fic that takes place immediately after the finish of Book 4 then Please Excuse My Penmanship will probably appeal. (The notes about the comics and the Book 4 commentary still apply, obviously.) There are some Beifongs involved, most notably Huan Beifong, whom I headcanon as autistic. 

If you are looking for fic that takes place during Wu’s two years of putting together the abdication he discusses during the final episode of Book 4, then Dear Diary or: How I Had a Second Coronation and a Dalliance with a Detective might appeal. It does include some OCs and takes place in Ba Sing Se; there are also many other canon show characters involved. Is it canon? Well, as much as you can get when you are writing about something that happens 2 years after the show ends and that isn’t based on the comics and/or Bryke’s commentary. 

The rest of my work? There’s stories that focus directly on the Beifongs (where Wuko exists but is in no way the focus of the fic) and stories that focus on Wu and Mako, but are they canon? That completely depends on what your definition of canon is.

Is your definition of canon as something only taking place during the source material’s timeline? Then the rest of my work isn’t for you.

Is your definition of canon taking into consideration only what the showrunners have said and/or done? Then you’ll be moderately disappointed with my work. I do keep it firmly lodged in the world that Bryke created, but I do take some liberties (including ignoring all of the heavy-hitting only a straight person could write this homophobic world dealing with Korra’s coming out in the comics - my world isn’t homophobic, because as a pansexual damn near in her 50′s I’ve got zero desire to write that). 

In my mind, there are three different categories when it comes to Fanfiction: 

CANON

Filler fanfic: The kind of fanfic that focuses on scenes that were implied but that we weren’t shown in the source material and sticks to pure canon as closely as possible

HEADCANON

Broadening fanfic: The kind of fanfic that runs parallel to canon but delves deeper into the source material and broadens and expands on it through giving agency to minor characters, creating OCs and/or is set in either pre- or post-canon time periods

Fix It fanfic: The kind of fanfic that stays in the canon world but is there to “fix” the source material by taking a major thing that happened in the source material and either ignoring it or changing it; a major character death, for example, or a major plot point (like writing that Su Beifong was the one to attack Republic City and deploy the Colossus rather than Kuvira, for example) or, yes, creating a romantic relationship between characters that is not canon

CANON?

What Is The Source Material Anyhow fanfic: Korra and Asami are here on Earth and Korra works in a coffeeshop where Rich Girl Asami the Korean Pop Star flirts with her and they wear cute sneakers and lacy bras and have mobile phones and bending what’s bending?

Crossover fanfic: Korra and Asami meet the kids from Scooby Doo and have adventures in the Mystery Van where Korra bends at the Bad Guys and Velma tries to get into Asami’s pants, much to Daphne and Korra’s utter jealous rage

Smut fanfic: Fuck characterizations, fuck the source material, this is porn, all we’re here for is fucking, preferably as nasty as possible

In all but The Prince and the Bodyguard my fic is solidly in the Headcanon category, and straddles the Broadening/Fix it border. Fix It because Wuko is not actually canon, after all. Broadening, however, because I really do stick to the world and canon events, even though most of it takes place in the future. 

I can tell you that I am a 49 year old woman who was in a same-sex marriage with kids (and who was widowed three years ago) and therefore has not only a whole shit-ton of life experience but also has previous fanfic writing experience under her belt. I can also tell you that I have done exhaustive research on certain aspects of Imperial China, for example, so that I can write Wu’s background as a Crown Prince of the Earth Kingdom in a way that I think is not only canon but goes far, far deeper than Bryke were ever able to do on 23 minutes a week on Nickelodeon. Some people appreciate this sort of epic novel approach I have to my fanfic; some people just want to see Wu and Mako holding hands and having a sweet little kiss in the turtleduck boats and could not give a shit about all of my research and efforts to enrich the source material. Which is fine, by the way! It’s just not what I am writing.

I have two kinds of readers: the kind that read the first couple of fics I linked to above who enjoy them and leave nice feedback and go on their merry way without bothering with the rest and my RIDE OR DIE readers who inhale all of my work over a couple of days barely coming up to eat or do anything else and who send me these amazing heartfelt (and sometimes delightfully incoherent) letters about it and who loyally follow my work after that. There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground! I appreciate both kind (although I confess to really loving my RIDE OR DIE readers).

So really, it’s up to you, as the reader, as to what you want to read. 

The sad truth about it is that there is so little Wuko fanfic out there that I think your choices are pretty limited. It’s a show that ended over three years ago that was aired on Nickelodeon, written for adults but aimed at kids. I loved TLOK - obviously, I’ve written close to a million words about it - but in many ways it was kind of a mess. A well beloved mess! But mess, nonetheless. With very little exception most of the fanfic out there is based on Korrasami, and most of that doesn’t really give any real thought to how canon it is or isn’t. It is what it is.

However, this much I can tell you about my fanfic: I love Wu and Mako as a couple. I loved them together in the show and I continue to love them. I am currently writing 12 years into the future from the end of the show, so they are not exactly the same people they were when the show ended. (God, I would hope not. Most of us do mature and change.) They have a life, they have kids, they’ve gone through a lot. They are still together. In my fanfic they will always be together, end stop. Is it canon? Well, obviously Wu and Mako living in Republic City and having three (soon to be four) children together is not canon. That is not in the show. But then again, neither is Wuko itself. So take that as you will!
