Posting on Wednesday March 27
Dean is 24 years old, and a quiet night at a California dive bar turns into a near death experience turns into a trip through time thanks to the stranger he meets in the bar. When he lands in the bunker twenty years into his future, he finds out who the stranger is — and what his relationship is to Dean’s own older self. Dean’s not sure what he thinks about this at first, but when Cas takes him back to his own time (accompanied by the older Dean, who is determined to make sure that nothing they do in the past screws up their lives in the future), he gets to know the angel, and he gets a glimpse at a future he never would’ve dreamed that he might be able to have.
Keep reading for a sneak preview!
In the cool evening air, Dean looks around. He’d left the Impala back parked at the dingy motel where he’d rented a room, but he’s not quite ready to call it a night. He opens his remaining beer and looks down the street to see if there’s another bar nearby that might be worth checking out, but before he can make a decision he hears the door to the bar he has just left open behind him. And he knows, he just /knows/, that it isn’t some other random patron headed home.
“What the hell is this, huh?” Dean asks, “Something about ‘not interested’ you’re not getting?”
And then the guy says his name.
“Dean,” the man begins, and Dean gets it.
“Oh, lemme guess, my dad tell you to check up on me?” Dean asks. He doesn’t wait for an answer, just begins to walk, knowing the man will follow. He’s a hunter, obviously. Explains the build, and the suit that is only meant to pass muster at a brief glance, like the fake police badge or FBI creds the guy probably carries. Dean should’ve clocked him from the start.
And for some reason John had thought that Dean needed checking up on. That he couldn’t be trusted to go it alone, nevermind the fact that he had finished the hunt his dad had sent him on two whole days ago and had yet to receive any new case coordinates from John.
To Dean’s surprise, he hears a laugh behind him. He stops, and now he does turn to face the guy again.
“No,” the man says. “I’ve lost count of how often I’ve been told I’m bad at following orders, but even if that wasn’t the case, I wouldn’t follow your father’s.”
“Oh yeah? Then how do you know my name?” Dean demands.
“You left your wallet on the bar,” the man replies, holding it up. It’s definitely Dean’s: worn black leather, secondhand from his dad, containing a meager number of bills and at least three fake IDs tucked behind a real one— well, real first name, although it gives his surname as Campbell, just in case.
“Oh,” Dean says, wondering for the second time that night if he has misjudged this guy’s intentions. Maybe he’s just a normal businessman trying to do a good deed for the day and return a lost wallet, despite the wallet’s owner being an absolute weird freak toward him. “Thanks.”
The man offers the wallet out to him, almost gently, like he’s proffering a bit of food to a scared, stray dog, and Dean steps forward to take it. “It’s your birthday,” he says, and before Dean can ask, the man explains, “I saw it on your ID. On one of them, anyway.” Dean nods. “Happy birthday,” the guy says. “I should’ve bought you a beer.”

I see this held up as major proof of Dean's badness, but couldn't it also be proof of Cas having faith Dean can get past anything without Cas having to change his behavior? The way it's structured the onus is on DEAN to work through it, not others to change or make amends. ---- CASTIEL: You know, Dean, he – he feels things more acutely than any human I've ever known. So it's possible he could work through this. One day, he may explode and let it all out and breathe deeply and move on.
I see what you mean in a general sense, and it's extremely possible that Cas is thinking about his own past fights with Dean and Dean forgiving him, and from the perspective of the critique you have in mind that you're refuting, I agree. But of course deancrit casgirls will forever insist that Cas has never in his life done anything harmful to Dean either accidentally or on purpose, so any time Dean might dare try to hold him accountable for anything, he's actually just making shit up and being toxic and controlling, so here Cas is just apologizing for his own abusive relationship. You can only get their take by being deliberately obtuse/disingenuous.
That said, the context of that line (from 15.13 "Destinty's Child") is Cas answering soulless Jack's question about whether Dean will eventually forgive him for murdering Mary.
CASTIEL: Hey, Jack. JACK: Cas, you know what's good about being dead? CASTIEL: Uh, as I recall, very little. JACK: Well, when you come back, you – you really get into all that life is. Hot, cold, sweet, spicy, funny, scary. CASTIEL: And are you? "Into it"? JACK: I want to be. But I don't... feel things the way I used to. Before I lost my... CASTIEL: Your soul. JACK: I used to feel things. In my bones. It was glorious, and sometimes unbearable. But I felt them. Now, I understand joy or sadness, but... I know those things aren't in me. I understand why Sam and Dean were angered by what happened to Mary... CASTIEL: By what you did to Mary. JACK: Yes. I see that I've caused them pain. And it's clear that things have changed. Especially with – with Dean. Will he ever forgive me? CASTIEL: You know, Dean, he – he feels things more acutely than any human I've ever known. So it's possible he could work through this. One day, he may explode and let it all out and breathe deeply and move on. JACK: How long will that take? CASTIEL: I don't know.
And yeah—I have seen people refer to Cas's little speech here as "condoning child abuse" and other bullshit. Because how DARE Dean not forgive soulless Jack for murdering his mother (something soulless Jack is unable to actually really acknowledge he did). I mean clearly any time someone murders your mom because she made them mad and threatened their sense of security by asking if they're okay and saying their concerning actions can’t stay a secret… That’s just natural understandable stuff! You need to forgive the person who murdered her instantly and if you don’t idk you’re kinda overreacting don’t you think? :/ I mean your mom probably deserved it kind of anyway for reading the room so wrong and talking about getting a person help. And I mean if you don't forgive the person who killed your mom or do anything trying to stop them from hurting more people you're really a child abuser... toward an adult... who murdered your mother in cold blood and is unable to even understand why it was wrong in any sense other than an intellectual one like he read it from a book... preferring to refer to it as "What happened to Mary" instead of acknowledge it as something he himself did because he was mad and felt threatened—which is what he circled back to in "Jack In The Box" too. It's only when Jack gets his soul back that he's able to actually feel true empathy, acknowledge his real actions and the gravity of them, and give an actual sincere apology. Because his soul is actually important—something this fandom refuses, by and large, to notice.
Anyway, this fandom's take on Mary's murder and soulless Jack vs. regular Jack is overwhelmingly a bag of wet third grader vomit and feces so what can one expect?
#mail#soulless jack killing mary is popularly regarded as an accident... but it's pretty transparent that it wasn't?#or rather it was on purpose but he regretted it the second after it happened. but that is still. Something he chose to do. Not an accident.#He saw her as a threat to his relationship with Sam and Dean and he acted.#This is indicated right before he kills her. He admits it outright also right before calling it an accident which unravels that whole idea.#It wasn’t pre-meditated but in that moment he wanted her to die. She was going to tell everyone there was something wrong with him.#And he did not want that.#It wasn't an accident and he can't handle his own culpability because it threatens his belief that he can make things be the way they were#before it happened. Which is why he killed her to begin with! He didn't want anyone to know/think anything was wrong with him!#And just like soulless Jack just wants everyone to forget about it and act like nothing happened and he's fine...#Many fans want Dean to forget about it. They want Dean to believe and say and feel and think that Mary did not matter.#And that being upset at her literal murder (even if it was an accident—which it was not) is bad and evil.#And Sam's great capacity for numbness (which we already saw in season 13) strengthen's their own lack of empathy for Dean#in a situation that in real life they would understand unless they're actual psychopaths.#It's only because Dean is a character in a narrative representing the need/capacity to be loved and accepted at all#that these demands that his thoughts and feelings bend to everyone else's emotional needs become so disturbingly intrusive#dont feed the stans after midnight#and cas is my best friend#hot girl cas

the thing i can't reconcile with early seasons interpretation of destiel is the thought behind dean "teaching cas free will". that bitch was canonically reprogrammed for thousands of years, over and over, before meeting dean. AND he rebelled against heaven without a single blink of an eye, dean just basically gave him a reason to. so it's less like he was the lesson, more like the catalyst? idk. just always felt that way to me??

Fewer Things 8
[Part 8] Cas’ alcohol tolerance has dropped significantly, and he doesn’t know his limits.
Dean found himself hovering, for lack of a better term, as the days stretched on. He was working on cleaning the mess he made of Cas’ room as promised, but it was like his body didn’t want it to be done.
He did, however, need it to be, as sleeping next to the former Angel was proving near impossible.
And even though Dean had thought about sleeping in the movie room, he couldn’t pull himself away from the former celestial’s side long enough to seriously consider the idea. He would say it was for Cas, but he strongly felt as though that might be an excuse. So he suffered through restlessness for comfort, and that was messed up even for Dean.
Still, wakefulness gave him little reprieve either, what with Cas’ increasing confidence in pushing the limits that had been so set throughout their friendship.
And the hunter even had to admit to himself, he wasn’t really fighting him on that.
They were just little things here and there that he could brush off, but his body’s reaction was the harder part to excuse away.
“Dean?” Cas caught him staring again.
“Sorry,” he snapped the charm into place to disguise his reverie, “You were talking about Michael Angelo, I was listening…”
“Michelangelo,” Cas smirked adoringly.
“Yeah, that’s what I said,” Dean grinned back, sipping his whiskey as his eyes shone over the rim.
“It wasn’t important,” Cas’ features were soft, arm resting on the chair so that his glass hung suspended from his hand, “What were you thinking about?”
“Me?” he cleared his throat, “Was just thinking about taking a drive tomorrow… We’re low on food, and we could use a supply run if you’re interested..?”
“Very,” he leaned his head back until it rested on the back of the chair and his eyes scanned the ceiling, “We haven’t left the bunker at all since I got back… I’m not used to so much down time without an apocalypse or a hunt.”
“Yeah, well you deserve a break,” Dean took another sip to avoid the look he was getting.
“Is that what you’re doing too?” Cas wasn’t swayed so easily from the topic at hand, “Just because I’m human doesn’t mean I can’t still figh-”
“I don’t want you to,” Dean’s voice was stern but without any bite or anger.
“Ever?” the former Angel asked casually as if Dean had a right to say.
The hunter fixed him with a look, considering something for a moment to himself, “I’ll stop if you will.”
This seemed to catch Cas off guard and he straightened up in his chair a bit, “Really?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, “I mean, we’re basically retirement age for hunters- you especially.”
He grinned and gave a teasing wink, and Cas’ eyes scanned over him unguarded, the liquor clearly taking its toll.
“Cas, not for nothing, but the last person who looked at me like that... I got laid.”
Dean’s words ran past his mind unbidden and he was fairly certain his face was red as he downed the rest of his drink and ran a hand over his face.
“You can’t look at me like that,” the words fell out before Dean could catch them, and Cas’ head tilted in response.
“How am I looking at you?” he asked in soft curiosity.
Dean’s chest rose and fell heavily beneath his red flannel as he stared the former Angel down, “You know how.”
“Hey, there you are,” Sam rounded the corner, pausing as he took in the atmosphere of the room, “What am I interrupting?”
“Cas is drunk,” Dean grinned widely, stealing the forgotten glass from Cas’ hand to finish for him and setting his own, empty glass down on the table.
“‘M not drunk,” Cas corrected, still half-laying in his chair.
“‘Course not,” Dean’s smile lit his whole face and spread all the way to his brother’s face as well.
“You guys are ridiculous,” Sam shook his head, “We watching the uh, the thing tonight?”
“The meteor shower!” Cas announced with little physical movement, looking more and more comfortable by the second, “I forgot!”
“Well, lucky for you, I didn’t,” Dean smirked proudly, “I’ve got blankets, chairs, snacks- the whole shebang, and we’ve got about another…” he pulled out his phone, “Forty-five minutes til it starts.”
“What’s a shebang?“ Cas asked, eyeing his glass like it offended him when he found it suddenly empty.
Dean paused for a moment then looked back toward the other man, “I don’t know, but we got the whole thing!”
“It’s a civil war term,” Sam supplied off-handedly.
“Of course you know that!” Dean knocked his shoulder.
“Uh, Dean,” Sam wasn’t paying attention to him and instead looking just over his shoulder, “Might’ve overdone it on the pre-game.”
“What?” he whipped around to see Cas passed out, head tilted back and snoring lightly, “No! He was really looking forward to this!”
He ran a hand through his hair before his eyes returned to the taller of them.
“What?” the word held new meaning in its repetition as his hand dropped at the quizzical and fascinated look on his brother’s face.
“Nothing,” the other man sighed, looking away as his head shook in exasperation, “You got the room ready for him yet or is he sleeping there tonight?”
“No,” Dean’s eyes dropped, “No, I got him.”
He looked back toward the sleeping former Angel, softening as the man’s head twitched slightly and a small sound huffed out.
He approached gently, beaming before him and shaking his knee softly.
“Cas? Buddy?” his voice softened, “Come on.”
“I’m not hogging the bed, you are…” he grumbled out, and Dean’s face went red.
Fearful eyes cut toward Sam, but he was already walking toward the hallway and leaving the pair to their dance.
“Dean?” a deep, groggy voice called him back.
“Hey,” a shine returned with his attention, “Think we might have to catch the next meteor shower.”
“It’s not for another seventy years,” blue eyes saddened as they met with his.
“Maybe a different one then,” he shrugged, tapping his leg again before he rose up, “Come on.”
Cas took his hand and was tugged to his feet, stumbling a bit as he did, but Dean was there to steady him.
“I’m sorry I messed up our night,” he looked so distraught that Dean’s heart pulled in his chest.
He glanced down at his watch then back up to the hopeful, blue eyes awaiting him, “How bout this… We get some carbs in you and you manage to stay coherent for another half hour, and maybe we can see about this meteor shower after all.”
Cas’ head bobbed excitedly, pulling a laugh from deep in Dean’s chest.
“Yeah, okay, come on,” he threw an arm around him and headed them both toward the kitchen.
