Arthur and the Invisibles was a film I used to watch frequently on dvd.

Here’s a Princess Selenia redesign, tried to make her look elf-ish and a kid. (she’s supposed to be around 10 years old in human perspective, but she looked 20, and was highly sexualized ).

Patterns?

I've heard my style described as "punchy", and I think I see it here. I tend not to ease into things with atmosphere or setting (which could work against me, in some cases) and instead lead with something declarative. I'm pretty quick to establish which character's pov we're working with.

Some of these examples vary in tone, but I think my voice is consistent. (But then, I would. That's really more for the reader to decide.)

Arthur and the Minimoys or the nostalgic movie I would not recommend 

Back when I was little I was a big fan of a cartoon that told a story of a 10 year old boy traveling to the land of microscopic creatures in order to rescue his grandpa.But upon rewatching the trilogy (yes,there are three movies out there) I realized that it has way more problematic aspects then I remember.You may ask:what is so icky about a French cartoon from 2000s with uncanny valley effects that made you want to warn people?Well worry not,for I will explain it to you!

1.Bogo Matassalai

Bogo Matassalai is a fictional African tribe that the main characters grandfather,Archibald Suchshot,helped build an irrigation system.As thanks,they gifted him a bag of rubies and introduced him to their friends-minimoys.What is interesting though,is that both tribes mentioned moved to Connecticut,specifically to the Archibalds yard or nearby,seemingly without any reason (as it wasn’t mentioned in any film).Bear in mind that Arthur’s grandfather is supposed to be an explorer during the 60s,so now the implications are weird.

Another thing is Bogo Matassalais lack of individuality:we don’t learn about their reasoning behind abandoning their homeland to move with Suchshot,their backstories aside from what others told of them,even their names are unknown.The tribe usually shows up when the plot requires them to,helping the main character and then disappearing.What’s worse is the reaction of others towards them:Arthur’s father,Francis,after first seeing members of Bogo Matassalai,ran away frightened towards home where he tried to call the police,and when he failed,Francis tried to explain that he saw “tall and black” figures.His wife,Rosie,isn’t better in this regard:every time she sees the tribe,she either faints or acts as if they could bite her head off.It seems that the crew behind those films wanted to show the bias of Arthur’s parents and ridicule them, but without devoting enough time to this aspect, the audience only sees the shuddering and gawking at people of another ethnicity for the comedic aspect.

It’s also important to add that in the second film,the tribe wanted Arthur to pass the tests of nature,where he hugs trees and sleeps near wild animals.Aside from cultural inaccuracy I’m not qualified to dissect,we also get-

It becomes pretty clear that Bogo Matassalai are used either as a narrative foil or some kind of exotic “other”,stripping them of any personality or agency.However,this wasn’t the only instance the trilogy did certain characters dirty.

2.Selenia 

Oh boy,where do I even begin?The princess of the First Land was hinted to be Arthur’s love interest from the very start,but upon getting to know her we notice that she’s voiced by a grown actress(Madonna in the eng dub and Myléne Farmer in the french) and is sexualized either through frames that showcase her butt/breasts(like that scene when Arthur took a lace from her top-corset thingy and she had to hold it from falling apart) or through the words of grown men who want to marry her.So aside from objectification of said character,we also get the memo that she’s an adult and Arthur is too young for her.But apparently that isn’t the issue?During their stay with Koolamassai,the princess explains that she’s 1000 years old,but the human equivalent is 10.So now it’s confirmed that Arthur,a 10 year old boy,is considered an adult in Minimoys society and therefore allowed to marry Selenia,a woman who turns out to be a child in human years.So here we have a female character, who,despite being  portrayed by the male gaze,is still implied to be a kid.

Thus here are my reasons as to why watching Arthur and the Minimoys may be uncomfortable for an audience who hopped on nostalgia train or wanted to see something new.

A quick rundown of everyone’s Guardian Characters for Shugo Phantom, my and @this-is-z-art-blog ‘s DP x Shugo Chara crossover. For @crossoverdanuary Day 5: Shell! (Because eggs have shells. It’s a stretch, I know)

DANNY

Lune - Danny’s first Guardian Character. A put-together little nerd. Lune is very smart, and loves astronomy and physics. Born of Danny’s love of learning and desire to be an astronaut.

Soul - Danny’s second Guardian Character. An outgoing superhero character. He’s born of Danny’s desire to be helpful and brave enough to do the right thing!

SAM

Blossom - A sweet, laid-back hippie who loves flowers. She is born of Sam’s passion for the environment. They aim to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.

TUCKER

Jameson - A very technologically savvy James Bond-type spy. He was born of Tucker’s desire to be charismatic, clever, and talented. Jameson is cool and collected, unless there’s fancy tech around!

KWAN

Prose - A cozy knit sweater kinda guy! He’s very gentle and kind, and enjoys reading books. Born of Kwan’s love of reading and desire to be a gentle giant. He uses big words and loves to talk.

VALERIE

Clementine - Val’s first Guardian Character. A fashionable and popular gal! She was born of Val’s desire to be liked. When Val is rejected by her friend group, Clem returns to her egg while Val focuses on her other goals. Once she re-hatches, she is born of Val’s desire to like herself, so she’s Val’s biggest hype girl.

Red - Val’s second Guardian Character. Cool and serious, and very determined. She gets along well with Jameson. She is responsible and is born of Val’s desire to be more mature and “adult”.

STAR

Selenia - A studious scientist. Born of Star’s love of learning and desire to be a chemist. Very smart and gets along well with Lune! She knows most things but excels at chemistry.

DANI

Sol - Dani’s first Guardian Character, born of Dani’s desire to be Vlad’s perfect daughter. Sol’s personality changes and grows as Dani realizes the perfect daughter for Vlad is who she is on the inside and not who Vlad wants her to be.

Lun - Dani’s second Guardian Character. Born of Dani’s desire to be a little gremlin and also a little hero, Lun is stubborn and headstrong. Takes a lot after Danny because Dani really respects and adores him.

DASH

Jonas - Just a cutesy little pop singer! Very sweet and affectionate, often singing little nonsense songs. Born of Dash’s love of “girly” things, and his desire to be unashamedly himself (and loved for it).

PAULINA

Reina - Born of Paulina’s desire to be a princess. Fortunately for Paulina, Reina always expects to get what she wants. Unfortunately for Paulina, Reina also knows that a princess is polite, respectful, and responsible. They often argue but have similar tastes in everything.

EMBER

Solo - An intense rocker who is determined to get the world dancing and singing! She is born of Ember’s love of singing and wants the whole world to be able to hear Ember’s voice!

slept very tolerably on my rickety table – one of our baggage covers (feutre) and my burca for bed, and my chelat for couverture – finish but dullish morning which turned to rain about 9 and till about (after) noon – the fine but the mist hanging lowish down the hills – breakfast over at 10 ½ - and at that hour F19° - the rain has cooled the air and now at 12 20/.. p.m. R17 ¾° and I have just written the last 8 lines of p. 289 and so far – a boy brought some time ago a plate of cherries and ditto of mulberries – about 1lb. of each – gave him ./10 copper – très content – 10 nice trout one abasse boiled for breakfasted of which A- ate 5 – I did not take any – wish to get my bowels right first  no motion since Wednesday morning took a little cream of tartar in a glass of tea last night on finishing dinner an hour rubbing out pencil of rough book – then reading Dubois // at 2 ¼ rain and very heavy now at 2 35/.. and pouring thro’ the pretty 8tagon dome of our salon in 3 places, and into the little room the rain entering in 3 places – Thunder at 3 5/.. and the rain heavy as ever and then obliged to move all my things (burca-bed etc.) from off my table the rain reaching that too – just fair at 3 55/.. – raining again at 3 55/.. sat reading and making notes for our route from here to Oni till 4 ¼ when the princess  our neighbour in one of the small houses (the one close by and owner of the cuisine) sent to ask us to tea – the samovar it seems is hers – the water was just boiling for our own tea – sent it home and promised to go to tea in 10 minutes – went at 4 ¾ and came away at 5 25/.. sat 10 minutes before tea came – 2 small glasses each – nothing to eat – the prince not at home but an intelligent employé (Georgian) who takes the duties of his place when away, interpreted for us – the princess and her friend (Georgian – wife of another employé) speak nothing but Georgian – she is 2nd wife – 1st wife was an English woman, wife! of an Englishman who came from Tabriz when the Russians took it, and, in passing thro’ Tiflis, left his wife there who married our prince and died 7 years ago leaving a son and daughter – the latter dead – the former aet. 11 at the école des cadets à St. P- the employé wrote the name Prince Josuf (Joseph) Dimitrief Djavakoff – Ratchinskii natchalnik commandant here tho’ according to George of a military rank below Captain – has only been here about 6 months – their house not yet quite montée – all their things not arrived – but la princesse has another samovar besides the one lent to us – pretty her son aet. 5 a pretty boy – asked names of principal mountains – all called after the villages they are nearest to – 2 roads from here to Baragone - - one to the right – the other to the left – we to take that to the right to see Kŏo-ăr-rast-sīk-hé 10v. from here the old chateau of the Kings of Imeretia – the widow of the last still living at St. P- and Krepost now and 6 pieces of cannon there – the palais was at Koutaīs – Kothévi [Kothevi] the capital containing 4,000 houses and 101 villages at district beginning and including Nikortsminda and the villages of Ghébi and Glola – mineral springs at the latter – a stone like a diamond that one can light a pipe by, found at the mountain of Outsèré 10v. from Oni the iron mines are at Tzédissé 15v. from Oni where good cheese and butter and barley bread etc. can be bought – nothing to be bought here without addressing oneself to the princess – the people only make what they want for themselves – she civilly asked if we wanted anything – much obliged – thought not – would ask her for whatever we might want – she has sent to seek
