Finally drew four of my Choices MCs inspired by @cassiopeiacorvus and her wonderfully done OC compilations (how do you have the patience to draw all of em omg)

Evangeline Marie G. (Guzman) Lakandula - Ah yes, my soft, anxious babie with self-worth issues. She comes from a messy background with a horrible father. She was close to her late (paternal) grandparents and had a very complicated relationship with her late mother. One of her relatives shes v close to is her older cousin, Ethan.

She's a college dropout thanks to her father's bad choices and worked the moment she had a chance to.

After her mother passed, that was it for Evangeline. She kinda needed to go away from her dad and his loud voice and other issues. So she left home and Ethan helped her out before he left for a business trip abroad.

He had her go to a house he owned in Laguna where she could live in provided she just do the cleaning in there. She found simple work that she was qualified for and that was her life for the next few years until a certain bachelor party came into her life.

Diwa Kalangitan M. (Masangga) del Rosario - My chaotic good and very protective MC who definitely rabbleroused in the school she works in.

She was raised in a household that follows some precolonial beliefs and traditions. She has a stepfather who's an albularyo and two half-siblings. One is studying in college, the other is still in high school. She has a close relationship to both her parents.

And she is rather happy with her job as a teacher in a private school. Sure she sometimes goes against curriculum to make sure the kids enjoy her lessons. She's a class advisor also so when she found out their math teacher humiliated one of her students, she confronted said teacher.

Her trip to America is really just a birthday trip until the events of the book started. In the end she ends up in a poly relationship with Nik and Cal. (She does end up pointing out to the boys that she'll have to go back to her work and family at least just to properly resign and find work near them and also to assure her family she's safe.)

Maya Chelidonia C. (Caacbay) dela Rosa - The local tired detective who had to move abroad for their own safety. Love them SM.

Maya is the child of Jaime dela Rosa, a cop in the Philippines who does not follow in corrupt practices and tries to do right by the community. He was killed after coincidentally seeing signs of corruption in the force and wanting to expose it.

After their father's death, Maya also followed in his footsteps. On their end, they wanted to try and do some good in their job but ended up experiencing some discrimination in the work force. Enter them finding the same evidence of corruption that their father found as well. This time they managed to expose the corruption but in the end, one of their few friends in the force warned them that they'll have to flee the country due to some v angry officials.

So they fled with their mother and younger sister.

Their sister became a fashion designer. Maya found work as a private detective and the two teamed up to be able to live a decent life. Their sister travels with their mom on fashion shows. They're fine living nearby their maternal uncle with their dog, Spudge. (He's a scaredy cat and a lil crybaby who doesn't like strangers and by that I mean he starts crying when the strangers notice him. It's not out of trauma, he just likes Maya and their fam more than anyone else and is v shy with others. He's also scared of the dark and loud noises.)

Inocencia Honorata G. (Galang) Valenciano - and finally, my love's embarrassing bby. My Rafael Aveiro romancer. Love her sm.

She and her mom, older brother and little sister ran away from their father when they were a kid. Her parents annulled their marriage after a few years.

Her older brother became the youngest lawyer in the country and had a firm in New York seek him out. This led to him helping Inocencia and her sister (who had skipped grades and managed to enter college the same year as Inocencia).

Inocencia is v non-competitive that she chose De La Salle University while her sister went to their grandfather’s alma mater, University of the Philippines. At college, Inocencia got dubbed as SiaSia because of the repeated -cia in her first name and surname.

The two got accepted into Edenbrook when they were gonna start. Inocencia being 27 and her sister being 25. By then, Inocencia still isn't competitive and didn't sign up for the competition for the diagnostics team but her little sister shoved her to try it out.

First things first, tackling things one at a time, I’m going to go throught the songs and look at their lyrics, and slowly connect them to Darry, I have yet to watch the show, and I could probably piece things together more clearly if I did go and watch it, but knowing me that would make it near impossible to return to this and it would forever remain as a draft to be expanded on. I highly suggest listening to these songs (If you haven’t already.).

Starting off with Inertia:

I was gonna save the planet, but today I got plans

I guess this is just what I am

Focusing on how Darry works to jobs and hardly has enough time for himself, seeing as all the shenanigans the gang seems to get up to, from Dally getting jailed, to Steve and Johnny abusive parents, and evenhis, Soda’s, and Pon’ys own issues, along with keeping up with the bills and making sure everyone is fed and taken care of. Gonna be honest, I feel like Darry sacrificed some of his own health to ensure that they could keep the house or pay the bills on time or just make sure everyone had food, seeing as how the gang practically lives at the Curtis house.

I've lost all emotion

Darry, from Pony's view, looks cold and emotionless, and according to Pony, he’s “hard as a rock and about as human.” (Page 39, fourth paragraph down)

We know that’s not true, everyone feels something, no matter how hard they try not to, and we get to see Darry start to break down a bit, Sitting in the chair, knowing damn well he has work the next day but staying up late, 2 AM, just to make sure Pony is okay, when he very well could have gotten up from the chair and gone to bed, leaving Soda on the couch to wait for their younger brother.

An object in motion, don't ask where I'm going

'Cause where I am going is right where I am

Darry had plans to go to college, and that was what fueled a good part of his and Paul's rivalry, but Darry was unable to go to college, as his parents are killed and he has to step up and take care of and provide for his younger siblings, effectively cutting off an entire section of his life for them, His parents being these legs that are broken, how he’s and object continuously moving, no time to comprehend what’s happening around him and how to handle it, hell, I don’t think he’s even had time to properly mourn the deaths of his parents yet, or even bother to move their things out of what now qualifies as ‘His room’, intentionally leaving their things in the room to feel closer to them, to have more to remember them by, more things to physically remind him of them, and the collective loss.

I wanna move out of this town

But everyone knows me, and packing is tiring

Inertia

Even if Darry were to somehow find a way back to his plans, it would be incredibly difficult. With the amount of memories stored in the house, and it being a designated hang out spot, Darry probably grew fond of the house over time, becoming more and more attached as time goes on, and not only that, but the fact it was something else to remind him of his parents, of everything good that happened because of them. Sure, he could keep the house, keep his jobs, but go to college anyways, but how would he realistically be able to manage all of that? He’d hardly have time to take care of himself, and in the end it would do far much more harm than good. Working to keep a house no one lives in, while trying to better himself and his own life after throwing it all away in milliseconds just to keep his brothers with him for as long as possible.

And why'm I so mad?

It's inertia

Guess this is just what I am I'm stuck in this life, and I'm stuck in these pants

Darry had bigger plans for himself, to go out and go through college, to figure things out as he went but tackling one thing after then next as best as he could, go places, do things, meet new people, experience things he probably hasn’t yet, and find what makes him happy without something holding him back, without something that prevents him from stopping and turning around when he’s oh so close to that gold mine of his dreams, so close he can feel them, only to get called back for one thing or another.

Darry is stuck in Tulsa. He knows this. It’s been hammered into his head so many times now I highly doubt there’s a chance it could change. I firmly believe that he, as a character, knows he was born in Tulsa, that he was raised in Tulsa, and that he will die in Tulsa.

What if I appeared in your ask box with family stuff again?😘 This time my victim is Pierro (I just need to cope w/ fact that hydro men hate me and I lost 50/50 to Jean)

So to be Pierro's child there are few variants on how you appeared. Maybe you survived Khaenri'ah with him (with your other parent dying there) or he picked you up after you were abandoned (like with Kaeya) or his current lover somehow, miraculously managed to convince him to start a family. Either way - after downfall of his homeland, Pierro is extremely protective of anything, what's close to him, so while he can't stay with you for long, drowning in endless work, you're always protected. Fatuus won't dare to disobey Tsaritsa's right-hand man (bc if they do there's a certain doctor or marionette waiting for them..)

Sadly, because of their father's status, child is feared as well. Most likely they grow to be very lonely, only really interacting with some harbingers and maybe Childe's family as well, because he felt bad for them and asked Pierro's permission to let them meet his family. Your father won't show it, but he's oh so happy when you return and tell him about how nice Childe's relatives were !! And you even made friends !!

As busy as he is, Pierro tries to make time for his child. He plays chess with you and no, he doesn't lose on purpose, what makes you think that? He also reads bedtime stories for you (either if you can stay awake until he return home or you come to his office specifically with this request). He has low and raspy voice, so you fall asleep quickly. Pierro will never forget how he was reading a silly fairy tale and a fatui soldier came with report, but he didn't notice them.. Talk about awkward

Speaking of awkward situations, very rarely you can end up on harbingers' meeting, when you fall asleep in Pierro's office and he doesn't want to leave you or you came to him before meeting and refused to leave, of course promising to stay quiet (well, these adults speak of lots weird and boring stuff, according to you, so you probably fall asleep rather quickly) or something else.. Harbingers are like ?? 🤔🤨😳?? the first few times, but then they get used to it

Another random thought, but imagine smol child hiding in their father's coat. Considering how lonely they grew up, they're probably shy as well. Or they just want to warm up, because it's too cold in Snezhnaya. Then, someone makes c/n a mini version of harbinger coat..

When it comes to studying, Pierro is demanding, but not to the point of making you know everything perfectly by studying endlessly. Child ends up very knowledgeable

Pierro genuinely tries his best at fatherhood. He can come across as cold, overly busy or too demanding and to some extent it's true. However if he was a father, he'd always manage to give you all the love and time that's left in his frozen soul </3

Only the most qualified and strongest agents are asked to guard you, it's one of the greatest missions and honors you could be granted as a Fatuus (which is kind of funny 😭) Some of them are just confused about why they're asked to protect a mere kid but once they hear it's Pierro's kid, they're like 😨 oh! So at this point even your own protectors are scared of talking to you in fear of upsetting you, and it's very hard for a Harbinger's child to make friends in general... :( there aren't much people your age in the palace too... but of course big bro Childe saves you! The ginger has seen you around only a few times, but he can't help but feel bad. A little kid who already looks so lost and lonely, it makes him sad :( If he has to set up some playdates with you and his younger siblings, then so be it! After that, Pierro genuinely thanks Childe, because social interaction is very important for growing kids... and he loathes that he can't provide it himself.

Poor reader, they're never gonna beat their dad at chess 😭 As soon as you think you got one of his strategies figured out, he's already on to another one! I imagine you got grumpy left quite a few times 😭 Ouhhh the bedtime stories... 🥺 you come to his office with a book in hand with the biggest puppy eyes and he can't help but give in! Reader infiltrating the meetings real 😭 You wanted to learn more about your dad's work too but then it got so boring... how can he listen to these people drone on for so long?! The Harbingers don't say anything but just give Pierro a knowing look.

YES. Reader literally just pops out of Pierro's coat out of nowhere and people usually get hella spooked. And when they try to speak to you, you just slip right back into the shadows. You love your tiny coat so much, because it makes you look like your dad :3 Pierro may not be the best dad, but he's certainly not the worst... he will put in as much effort as he can and that's what counts.

I find Rafal's Pact Ring conversation to provide so clear of an answer it hurts. His first reaction to Alear offering him the ring is that they are being foolish; his second is to shamefully express that they deserve someone more 'pure'. For a man so prideful over the power he holds, there's a huge gap between that aspect of himself and his perceived deserving of love. He judges himself unworthy and inapplicable.

Regardless of whether or not others have forgiven him, the ultimate sin of omnicide isn't easily redeemable. There isn't anyone more conscious of that fact than Rafal. It's not a stain that he allows himself to forget, it's a stain that he himself embodies by the mere act of existing, and that's why he labels himself as impure. Someone so evil, sullied, and made dirty by his sins that he does everything in his power to discourage and avoid people's attempts at friendship with him, much less romance. You could sum it up as an offshoot of his self-loathing and that would be accurate.

That isn't the end, either. There's the secondary element of cultural/racial awareness - a layer sitting right below the first. Rafal is a Fell Dragon who has done terrible things to survive and dabbled in the taboo. Between raising corpses for undead armies and culling his own siblings to prove himself worthy as Sombron's successor, his nature as one is fundamentally different from Divine Dragons and even humans who carry out their lives with more altruism and less destructive tendencies in mind.

Comparatively, he's not only a sinner but a monster. In his own mind, there's an inherent and near inconsolable division of him versus others, a line in the sand that exists to him as plainly and naturally as reality. A sense of dissonance and even outright dubbed 'wrongness' at the idea of being the focus of love.

Rafal: I may possess superficial charm, but giving this to me would be foolish even by your standard. Moreover, it would be wrong. I have done nothing to earn such an honor. Any partner of yours should be more…pure.

Alear: I’m a Fell Dragon just like you, remember? You said so yourself. I fought on Sombron’s side once too. I’m every bit as “impure” as you are.

Rafal: Even so...

Alear: You’re the one I want to give this to, Rafal. You and nobody else. You’re already an indispensable part of my life. I’m only asking you to continue to be that.

Rafal: ...

It's notable to me that even in the scenario where he does enter into a relationship (i.e., the Divine One) he needs to be solidly convinced that his unclean existence won't be rubbing off on someone virtuous. Alear's origins as a Fell Dragon equalizes them on the scale of immorality, even if somewhat, and that's why he can be persuaded to slacken his inhibitions.

Preceding his decision, the heavy moment of his consideration and conflict can be felt on-screen; he's visibly troubled; and I don't doubt that Rafal would have stuck with his initial protests and even evolved them to rejection had that qualifier not existed.

Rody Soul Propaganda

I was gonna let someone else make this, but there’s been no other posts so I will step up to the plate.

First and foremost, Rody Soul is one of the characters I have imprinted on the hardest. As an eldest child myself, I believe his character development and portrayal was perfect and he desperately deserves more attention in canon and manga. That being said, I will list below exactly what attributes I think make him a “best bnha character” qualifier, provide videos, and of course, share the link to vote for him once you inevitably decide that this boy needs to win.

He came from a pretty well-off, middle class family. So when his father disappeared and he was stuck living with his siblings, he could’ve easily complained about his lot in life and fallen apart. But he didn’t! We never see him bemoaning his financial problems, his main issues are with his father leaving and worrying over his siblings’ future

Even as a young boy we see he really loves and cares for his siblings, to the point where he’d rather spend time with them than alone. This not only works to explain his motives in the movie, but also is a great portrayal of eldest siblings. While we’re independent people, we grow up with our younger siblings for so long that there’s a special fondness and connection that can’t be replicated by anyone or anything.

Rody constantly brings up that ‘he isn’t tied to any sense of morality’ like Deku, and straight up refuses to listen to the police when they order him to stop running. He really said ‘fvck the police my family come first,’ and he’s so valid for that

As a ‘morally grey’ character his actions are built up very consistently throughout the movie; he steals his boss’s bike to get to his mission quicker, participates in a jewelry store heist, jumps on top of a bus to avoid paying the bus fare, and contacts the villains who are trying to destroy the world just so he can return the case and go back to his siblings. You’d think this would make him predictable and stale, but no; there’s actually a lot of complexity to his motivations and decisions

We especially see that in his final choice, to defy Flect Turn and help Deku instead of taking Flect Turn’s offer, of sparing Otheo (where his siblings live) in exchange for the disc. When he’s lying on the ground, barely conscious after just shutting down Flect Turn’s bombs, he asks “Was I as cool as you?” to Deku, revealing that protecting his siblings isn’t his only goal. He also wants to be someone his siblings can admire and look up to, the way he used to look up to his father. By risking his siblings’ lives, he didn’t act out of character. He was simply striving his hardest to exceed their expectations and be the best model for them he could be, which honestly made me shed a few tears when I realized it.

I haven’t even mentioned yet how queer-coded he is. Like this man is SO flamboyant and sly, he’s honestly a pleasure to watch just for his jokes and elegant animation. He’s constantly teasing and bantering with Deku throughout the film, and they have one of the most naturally pleasant and healthy dynamics I’ve seen in all of bnha. They bounce off each other so well which makes me wish he was canon even more

He has so much charm that Deku even chooses to save his random ass over completing his mission and returning to Endeavor, and this is DEKU we’re talking about. Mr. Does Everything by the Rules, Mr. Goodie Two Shoes, Mr. “Least Likely To End up On a Wanted List in a Foreign Country” DOES end up on a wanted list in a foreign country only because he decided to help Rody out

His quirk is the bird, Pino, who expresses his emotions constantly. It is literally impossible for him to lie as a result, which I know some people think “thats a lame quirk” but it works so well for building him up as a character and giving him more depth. We know when he’s putting on a mask in front of Deku because Pino is freaking out when he does, and it’s especially clever how he covers Pino’s mouth when talking to his boss. It shows how, at the start of the movie, Rody was in a state where he was constantly stifling his emotions and true desires in order to carve a better future for his siblings, which makes his future acts even more poignant.

He gives off closeted homeschooled kid vibes in a /pos way

Oh yeah did I also mention he knows how to pilot planes and helicopters? Because he does, that’s just how badass he is

Genshin Impact High School Au: School clubs pt.2

Marching band:

The marching band is certainly a group, they play at the football games and go to separate marching band competitions. Eula plays the clarinet, she practices religiously and is certainly the lead for her section. Venti and Kazuha are both flute players, they are both good at their instrument but Venti goofs off more during practice, while Kazuha prefers to stay focused. Yet Venti is still the better flute player. Xinyan’s preferred instrument is the guitar, which is not in marching band, so she went for her next best option, the drum. She is very enthusiastic about her music, maybe a bit too enthusiastic as they sometimes struggle to hear the other instruments over how loud she plays the drums. Scaramouche plays the trumpet, he’s a trumpet kid. He rarely practices and kinda sucks but he stays in the band regardless. The marching band isn’t the most respected group in the school but they still stay enthusiastic, mostly.

Model UN:

The schools model UN is a very competitive club, you have to try out and only the best of the best get in. The sibling duo, Ayaka and Ayato have been in the club every year. They are a strong duo that sit on the executive board as co-vice presidents. They monitor all the try outs and select which member moves on to be officially in the group. They are very serious about their club, but have a sort of good cop bad cop dynamic with them. Ayato is more strict and critical while Ayaka is more likely to offer constructive criticism and help those in need. The president of the club is future lawyer Yanfei. Yanfei loves the club and makes sure the group is well trained for all competitions. Sara and Nahida are both members who are not on the board but they are still very engaged during the meetings.

Book Club:

The book club is a very chill club, as its presidents are pretty chill about it all, probably part of the reason the club is so popular. Every month a book is selected at each weekly meeting discussing what they have read so far, and at the end of the month they do a debrief. Lisa and Diluc are co-presidents and take turns selecting books for the club to read, though Dulic did set up a suggestion box for other club members to provide their input. The club's vice president is a bit more strict but at the same time more creative than the presidents. Yae likes to hold a competition at the end of each book where the club members rewrite the ending or specific scene, and then yae chooses her favorite as the winner and gives them a prize. She shares her own work with the group but after she gave herself the win 3 times in a row an executive decision was made to keep her work out of the running, for fear of bias. Secretary Xingqui is the groups editor, anyone can submit any work to him that he will edit for them, this can include essays for school, text messages, or creative writing. Heizou likes the club because it’s a quiet place to read and discuss the books he reads; he wishes the club would read more mystery novels. Ganyu and Al Haitham like the academic aspect of the club, they enjoy a quiet place to study and a group of like minded peers to run their work by. Mika and Layla like the club's casual environment and its non-intense atmosphere.

Business Club:

The business club was founded by Ninguang. It’s a relatively new club so it’s small but Ninguang has grand plans for it. Ninguang wants to offer financial advice to fellow students and open a school market for students to sell goods like clothes, baked goods, or art. Ninguang is passionate about the club and especially how nice it would look on her college application, but besides that she really does feel passionately about the project. Then there is vice president Dori, the thorn in Ninguang’s side. Dori has ideas, not very good or helpful ones, but they do qualify as ideas. Ninguang isn’t necessarily able to ignore Dori as she is half of the executive board. This club has a long way to go but Ningguang is ready to take on the challenge.

Student Council:

The student council is very intense. The president is the one and only Childe. He’s a popular boy who's smart and talented as well as extroverted and kind. He ran against Keqing who objectively would've been the better president based on organizational skills and ideas, but keqing did not have his level of charisma, so she sadly lost. She still got a position on the council as secretary and has a slight grudge against Childe. Vice president is the one and only Jean, she keeps everyone calm and keeps the ideas manageable. While everybody else on the board can come up with wild ideas, Jean is the one to reasonably analyze them and how practical they would be for the school. Yelan is the treasurer and a damn good one at thar, she works closely alongside the fundraising manager Noelle. Who is honestly just terrified of Yelan. Every conversation between the two of them just contains a lot of nervousness on Noelles part. And finally the person who connects the council to the people, social media manager Kokomi. She makes sure their social media accounts are very active and interacts with students as much as possible.

The penultimate chapter appears! Approx 5800 words. There's a bit of angst, some pornography, and the end of this part probably qualifies as a cliffhanger. This is the last chapter with any sex in it so I tried to make it extra-filthy as a 'last hurrah' sort of thing but the whole fic has been rated E so if you've made it this far that's not going to shock you.

I'm so near to the end of this fic! I might actually manage to get there! And then I can read the whole thing at last!

Bio:

Daughter of an ex-soldier father and a hunter mother, Val was no stranger to the ways of combat and hunting, yet she was also drawn to the healing practices of medics. She is the eldest of six other siblings, all of whom were also trained to fight and hunt as a means of survival.

Val entered the Mandalorian Medical Guild at 12 years of age after passing a series of tests to qualify as a medic in-training. While qualifying was not as difficult, it was the studying, field and hands-on training that required more effort from her and her fellow Mandalorian colleagues. At 19, the final test that would determine only 5% of the candidates to obtain the title of “Doctor”, was enough to make Val nervous yet determined to pass.

In her small group of 10, Val was the only one to pass by one point.

Being a medic was no easy paying job when you travel throughout the galaxy, and despite taking a vow to never harm or take a life, Val found a new means of collecting bounties to pay for necessities, fuel, and ship repairs: putting bounty patients under anesthesia.

But what put Val on the edge of breaking away from her healer vows was the accidental overdosing of a bounty instead of sedating him, yet was paid more for his death. Val took a bit of time to eventually come to terms with what she was capable of doing and began more rigorous studies of different species to concoct certain medical poisons to essentially euthanize bounties.

Val continued this practice for nearly a decade until she had found a bounty worth millions, if not billions of credits: a yellow Zabrakian male with brown tattoos from Dathomir by the name of Savage Opress.

She accepted the bounty and while she did locate the planet he most likely was last scene in, she took a side step to explore an abandoned temple, obviously in awe at the beauty of the place. She made up for her small error when she heard someone approach her from behind.

Val and Savage had a brief quarrel before Val eventually had the upper hand due to her size compared to him and disarmed him. However, she felt something in her that told her not to kill him or turn him in, and offered to allow herself to provide medical care for both him, and his brother Darth Maul.

Val stayed with the Zabrakian brothers up until the very end of Savage’s life; and she was never able to tell Savage she was carrying his child. She was left as a heart broken single mother of their beautiful daughter Mara living on Koboh as the Rambler’s Reach Outpost’s newly appointed sheriff, working with Doma to keep the peace.

Why are resumes are hard to create…I'm just genuinely bad at writing resumes.

I feel. with more details I could help you directly but here's my advice:

For people with NO work experience:

List academics/extra curriculars, and anything related to community service. If you're a high schooler or fresh out of high school list different chores or things you did to help around the house. Did you help cook and watch your siblings? Congrats, you have a certain number of years as an experienced caregiver. Did you mow your lawn or rake up leaves? Congrats, you are experienced in landscape keeping. Have you ever held a leadership position in anything? Include that.

What activities do you do for fun? Do you play D&D? Include that under 'Regular Group Brainstorming and Community Skill Building" and if they ask for more details, explain that you meet with a group of friends once a week to run through problem/solution scenarios and roleplay how you'd solve those problems. Do you go swimming or do sports? Say you regularly exercise and focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

With high school extra curriculars, list three that might be relevant to your job application. If you're applying to work in the food industry then Home Economics/cooking classes will look good on a resume. If you took any extra language courses, that's a plus because you are able to help with language barriers in a way that meets customer needs.

If you're in high school, TAKE EXTRA CIRRICULARS IF THEY'RE OFFERED. If they aren't, look online to see if there are any public clubs or activities that can help you build those skills.

The next thing I would recommend is to look into getting certifications or licensing in different fields and specialized jobs, as that can pay higher if you're more qualified. Certification can help if you don't have as many years in that field.

For people with Work Experience:

Listing the above depending on your age. I feel like after 23 or 24, you shouldn't be listing high school related things unless specifically requested. Instead list college majors, courses, minors, and community courses you've taken. List soft skills. For example, I'm not fluent in Bokmal yet, but I'm actively learning it. Developing a skill and providing evidence that you're working on it appeals to employers.

When you have time off, volunteer or find small projects on the side if you have time for it that will be investments into your future. My last job didn't work out, but I was only able to get my foot in the door because I worked for a smaller Youtuber for free during the pandemic as a project manager. My ability to organize files and do basic data entry appealed to my bosses at the time. Things like that help a lot.

THE BIGGEST THING: A lot of employers for larger companies and corporations use a scanner to read through resumes, so make sure YOURS IS AN EDITABLE PDF and that YOU USE KEY WORDS FROM THE JOB DESCRIPTION IN YOUR RESUME. So, for example:

"This job requires and understanding of Excel, and Pro Create. You'll be expected to create assets in a timely manner and organize your files every day."

Make sure you modify your resume to include the same names of programs, and highlight the words that stick out to you in the job description to add. This will make the system think that you are a better option compared to others. And if your document isn't an editable PDF, the scanner won't be able to read it and your resume could end up being thrown away! Don't include any images or textiles unless requested in the job application. This clutters the resume and makes it difficult for both the machine and the employer who's hiring you to read it. Even if you are applying for an art or design position. They can see your skills from your portfolio, your resume is the information, not the aesthetic presentation. Learned that the hard way.

I love this one so much. It’s Ava trying to get a feel for the company members right after she arrives and maybe being a little too… direct.

Ava had been in her office all morning, calling the dancers out of rehearsal one at a time. Nobody had returned looking particularly happy, and they hadn’t said much about it, which couldn’t have been a good sign. The most useful piece of information any of them got was when Blake came back deflated, very different from the human version of a golden retriever puppy he normally was, and saying it had felt like an interrogation.

Jay was called out towards the end of partner rehearsals. Hailey had squeezed his hand for good luck, and he’d made a quiet joke about his army training preparing him for anything Ava could throw at him as Connor moved a few of the dancers around, using Crockett to plug the gap. Hailey nodded at Kelly as he took Jay’s place beside her, watching her partner leave.

She was alone in the studio changing her shoes when he came back, rehearsal having finished and left her debating between eating the leftovers she had in her bag or just walking down the street to one of the many takeout places surrounding the theatre.

"You’re up." Jay said, grabbing his bag from its spot beside hers. "It’s not that bad. She just wants to know our backgrounds, it’s mostly about previous training and any injuries. Maybe a little about who you like to work with."

"So not really an interrogation at all?"

"I think that might just be her personality." He said, offering out his hand and letting Hailey use him as a counterweight to pull herself up off the floor. "I’ll walk you down."

They walked towards the office making comfortable small talk which mostly consisted of her filling him in on the part of the rehearsal he’d missed, which hadn’t been all that interesting.

"Training and injuries." Jay told Hailey, taking her gym bag as they reached the office that had been empty a week ago but now belonged to Ava. "That’s it. I’ll meet you downstairs."

"You wanted to see me?" Hailey knocked on the frame of the half open door.

"Yes." Ava looked up from the notepad in front of her. "There are no decent records on any of you, which means I don’t have enough information to make necessary changes." She gestured to the seat across from her. "Please."

"I’ve been dancing for over twenty years." Hailey told her, sitting down in the chair. "Just ballet when I was little, but I’ve tried out pretty much every style now. I mostly do contemporary here, but I’ve been a qualified dance teacher since I was eighteen and I teach a little of everything. I’ve never had a serious injury, and I’m pretty good at addressing the minor ones before they become problems."

"Thank you." Ava said. "And Jay is your partner?"

"Yeah, I joined right around the time his old one left so it made sense to try it out." She nodded. "We’re good together so it stuck."

"I can see that." Ava hummed, looking at something she had written. "You also dance a lot with Stevie?"

"Yeah, we’re all friends and similar dancers, so it makes sense for us to team up for non partnered stuff." She said slowly. "Is that everything?"

"One more thing." Ava stopped writing, put her pen down, and met Hailey’s eyes for the first time since the conversation started. "Which one of you is he screwing?"

Hailey didn’t know how to respond. "What?" She asked eventually.

"I tried to ask him what his relationships with the two of you were, but he was…" Ava paused. "Less than helpful in providing clarity. In under a week, I’ve gathered both yours and Stevie’s relationships with Jay go far beyond professional. So which one of you is he screwing, or is it both?"

It took a moment for her to structure her thoughts into something she could say. "Jay and Stevie are basically siblings. They grew up together." Hailey shook her head. "And Jay and I are friends." Ava raised an eyebrow at her. "We are!" She felt the need to defend. Ava clearly didn’t believe her, but it was the truth. Neither of her or Jay had done anything to change their relationship from platonic to romantic. "And even if we weren’t, it’s none of your business."

"I have a duty of care." Ava’s tone sounded like what she was saying was supposed to be some sort of explanation. "All personal relationships complicate partnerships, but romantic ones do it particularly messily."

"You don’t have to worry about me and Jay." Hailey told her. "We’re solid, and nothing is going to change that."

"I thought that about someone I danced and had a relationship with. I was proven wrong." Ava said firmly. "I would hate for the same to happen to you."

"It won’t." Hailey told her, standing up and walking out.

NEW AMSTERDAM REACTION

This reaction is for the season 5, sixth episode titled "Give Me a Sign" which originally aired on October 25, 2022. The episode was written by Gisselle Legere and directed by Jean E. Lee. Spoilers ahead!

New Amsterdam really is on a roll this season and I know some of you may not agree with this sentiment but, as much as I love Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), I'm not really missing her presence. Her and Max's relationship and the whole going back and forth between New York City and London became exhausting over time and it also hindered Max from doing the job he set out to do in season one. I don't want to blame everything that happened last season on Max and Helen, but it's very telling that Max seems more centered now that he's out of that relationship.

So, let's talk about the episode. There were five separate stories in this episode so I'm going to go story by story. Let's start with Dr. Lauren Bloom. When nurse Casey Acosta (Alejandro Hernandez) returns to New Amsterdam, everyone in the ER is excited to have him back, including Lauren who absolutely refuses to admit she is happy to have him back. When Lauren is working on a patient, her phone starts to ring. As Casey attempts to silence the ringer, he sees that Lauren is getting texts from her sister Vanessa.

Casey confronts Lauren, privately, about her being in contact with Vanessa. He asks her what he missed while he was gone. Lauren finally admits that she did miss him while he was gone and she talks about how she would turn to him to ask him for his advice but he wouldn't be there. Since the beginning of the show, Casey has served as Lauren's surrogate older sibling. He always gives it to her straight, even if she doesn't always want to hear it. She calls him her touchstone and her best friend which is such a sweet sentiment. Casey asks why Lauren is so intent to look after her sister at the expense of not taking care of herself. Lauren blames herself for Vanessa's addiction and doesn't want to abandon her.

Lauren checks her voicemail and sees one from Vanessa. It turns out to be a butt-dial and she listens as her sister talks about getting high and drunk. The message ends with her sister telling someone she is going downstairs to get liquor from a place called Leo's. Lauren googles the address, but rather than go confront her sister, she goes to an AA meeting instead. This is growth and hopefully a step in the right direction for Lauren. We've seen her go up and down over the last several seasons and I'm so happy that she is taking baby steps towards prioritizing her health and well-being over others.

Next up is Dr. Floyd Reynolds. Floyd is still intent on trying to help his dead-beat dad. What I find most interesting about this particular plotline is how a few episodes ago, Iggy made a diagnosis based on the very limited information Floyd provided him and now Floyd has taken that diagnosis and ran with it. I'm no medical professional but I think he should've gotten his father properly diagnosed by qualified medical professionals before going to him and telling him that he is bipolar. Ever since Floyd told his dad that he was bipolar he has taken this information and run with it.

I was listening to a podcast earlier today, and one of the hosts who is a mental health expert said something along the lines of trauma being something that's not the fault of the person but it's up to that person to take steps to manage their trauma. I feel like the moment Horace Reynolds (John Earl Jelks) learned he was potentially bipolar, instead of taking steps to manage it, he used it to scapegoat Floyd's mother and absolve himself of the trauma he inflicted on his family.

When Horace starts acting erratically and putting himself in mortal danger by standing in the middle of traffic, Floyd is faced with making a difficult decision. Recognizing his dad is a danger to himself and possibly others, he has him put on an involuntary 72-hour hold. I know there will be some fallout from Floyd's decision and I hope whatever happens, he takes a page out of Lauren's book and decides to put himself first.

Dr. Max Goodwin and Dr. Elizabeth Wilder's stories intersect at the beginning of the episode, but I found hers way more compelling than his. Wildwin is very much in motion, literally, because when we first see these two they are jogging together. I've said before that I like the idea of these two being love interests and I think they do a great job of not making Wilder a replacement for Sharpe, but I wish we got to see their burgeoning relationship from her point-of-view. Everything we see regarding them is filtered through Max's perspective and I wonder what she thinks about him. Max keeps Elizabeth from nearly being mowed down by a car but two other passersby aren't so lucky. A young man named Rafael (KJ Aikens) and his grandmother, Ana (Delores Hunter) are struck by the vehicle and taken to New Amsterdam hospital. While Elizabeth goes to work treating the two patients, Max is accosted by a kooky lawyer named Callie Cruz (Aida Turturro). This is where Max and Elizabeth's stories diverge.

Max's storyline is the weakest of the episode. Long story short, Max takes it upon himself to get a crosswalk installed at the very same intersection where the accident happened. We watch as he has time to go to court with Callie Cruz and even find some city workers to paint the crosswalk. In true Max fashion, all of his efforts are seemingly for naught and the episode ends with him, Elizabeth and Callie illegally painting a crosswalk that will more than likely end up getting painted over.

Elizabeth's storyline is way more compelling and frankly more realistic. While Max is off galavanting around New York City, Elizabeth stays behind to treat Rafael and his grandmother. Rafael manages to come away from the accident with a few bumps and bruises but Ana isn't so fortunate. Ana needs to have surgery, an extremely risky surgery that could result in her being paralyzed from the waist down, and with Ana unable to make the decision herself, Rafael is left to make it on her behalf as her designated healthcare proxy.

I felt so bad for Rafael. I can't imagine being that young and having to make a decision where there was a 50/50 chance the person you love is going to be able to walk or not afterwards. I thought Elizabeth and Floyd did a great job of being honest with Rafael and coaching him through a very difficult decision. Rafael determines that his grandmother should have the surgery because she is the type of person who never backs down from a situation. Ultimately, the worse becomes reality when Ana is left paralyzed after the surgery. The scene that follows was beyond heartbreaking. I felt so bad for Rafael because he will have to go the rest of his life questioning whether or not he made the right decision. He, like Lauren and Floyd, made the best decision they could make in a shitty situation and unfortunately there are consequences.

Our final story of the night is actually my favorite and it involves a very competent Dr. Iggy Frome, something we don't often get on this show. At the beginning of the episode, we get a Iggy gets his groove back montage. We see him petting puppies, at an art museum, on a nature hike, and attending a wine tasting. The museum tour guide asks Iggy what feelings the painting he is standing in front of is invoking in him and that's when Iggy says that he has ruined his life. I think that's a bit of an overstatement but I do think Iggy was very rash in his decision to leave Martin and probably should've thought things through a little bit.

Iggy doesn't have too long to contemplate his navel because his case of the day involves a young boy named Jael Gonzalez (Oliver Reilly) who is deaf. Jael, clearly, has been having a difficult time as of late and has even been acting out and when Iggy asks his parents (Justin Huen, Natalie Woolams-Torres) if he knows ASL, they tell him that Jael's pediatrician recommended not having him learn sign language, holding out hope that he can become a verbal communicator. Iggy tells the parents that because he has gone so long without being able to communicate, his development is stunted. I felt so bad for Jael. I can't imagine not being able to communicate with those around me. He is unable to communicate using words and he is being discouraged from talking with his hands. To make matters worse, the pandemic came and people started wearing masks which means now Jael can't read lips. The level of isolation Jael is feeling can't be fully understood because he can't effectively communicate how he feels. If the theme of this episode is people being placed in situations where they have to make difficult decisions, it's safe to say that Jael's parents' decision to keep him cut off from the world was a poor, poor decision.

Iggy does what he does best by sitting Jael down and having a conversation with him using a mixture of hand gestures and carefully sounding out words so Jael can read his lips. In the moments we see Jael interact with Iggy, it's like he's a brand-new person. There's a light within him that we didn't see when we first met him and it took very little effort on Iggy's part to bring that light to his eyes.

The solution to Jael's case comes in the form of Iggy telling his parents that he has found a school in Massachusetts, which is four hours away, where Jael can be treated. Admittedly it must be hard to send your small child away to a different state to be treated but honestly, I feel like the parents owe it to Jael because their action, or rather their inaction, has placed him in the position he is currently in. I thought Iggy was wonderful in this story and this is the Iggy I wish we got more of. He is super competent at his job and we finally got to see it.

Iggy's story arc ends with him going to the very small gym in New Amsterdam. Now this scene threw me at first because I thought Iggy was vibing with the guy lifting weights. Turns out that was not the point of this scene. The guy encourages Iggy to do some dead-lifts and Iggy does one. After he does one rep, we are led to believe that he has an epiphany of sorts. the Iggy we saw at the beginning of this episode was lamenting the direction his life is heading in. Hopefully going forward, Iggy will begin to put the pieces of his shattered existence back together again.

Overall, I would rate this episode a 7.5 out of 10. I think we've gotten better episodes this season and I think we have some amazing episodes headed our way. What really weighed this episode down was Max and Floyd's storylines. Max works best when he's in the hospital, so taking him out of New Amsterdam felt jarring at times and I kept thinking to myself, surely this man can't be this naive about how the world works. As for Floyd, I'm still unsure as to what his endgame is when it comes to his dad. I think he'd be better off investing his time in relationships that could actually go somewhere. I've always suspected that while Dr. Floyd Reynolds is a great doctor, the writers don't know what to do with him when he's outside of the operating room. As for what worked about this episode, I really like Elizabeth and Iggy's storylines. I thought they did a great job of illustrating how the decisions we make in our day to day life can have a lasting impact on those we love. After the episode, I saw the preview for the next episode and it looks like our characters will be dealing with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. I'm sure this will be a powerful episode and I can't wait to watch it and write about it. Until next time ...

Zenobia was born to Timothy & Kimberly Winters on a cold October morning in Northknot. She was born second out of four kids. They grew up in a stable, happy home. Their father was a dentist and their mother a stay at home mom. Although their father worked long hours to provide for the family, he and their mother tried their hardest to be attentive, supportive and loving parents. Zenobia felt the love that her family had to offer and liked to give that love to others who didn't necessarily get it from home.

She found her love for the ice when she was only five years old. She'd go out skating with her father on his off days. Zenobia turned out to be really good at it and would go on to skate competitively as a teenager. That's where she met her best friend and then rival, Grace. They'd stay out late together practicing on the ice at all times of the hour as kids. They both genuinely loved skating and while trying to outdo one another, they became really good friends.

It’s your place in the world; it’s your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.

Zenobia was pretty good in school but her main focus was skating. She averaged a B in most of her classes but that was because she would rush through her work to get back out on the ice. All of her work on the ice paid off, when she was nineteen, she and her best friend had the opportunity to try out for the 2014 Winter Olympics. At the qualifiers, she watched Grace collapse on the ice and was rushed to the hospital while Zenobia ended up qualifying for the Olympics.

She almost didn't go because she felt guilty about Grace's injury. She thought that Grace should've been the one going to the Olympics and not her. Zenobia thought she should've intervened when Grace first told her about her injury and maybe they would've gone to the Olympics together. At the Olympics, she placed third overall, receiving a Bronze medal. After the Olympics, Zenobia continued to skate competitively but it wasn't the same without Grace.

“For individuals in their first job and particularly those who are unmarried, it is not necessary to purchase life insurance,” he said. “At this point in one’s life, the focus should be centered on saving for retirement, building a healthy emergency/down payment for home fund and/or paying off student debt. Typically, most companies will offer group-term life insurance equivalent to one time or two times salary as an employee benefit at no cost.”

But that changes once a spouse or partner and children come into the picture, as you want to ensure that they have enough money for living expenses as well as education. That’s where term life insurance comes in, Parisi said.

“For many people, term life insurance is the best choice because it offers robust financial protection at a budget-friendly price,” she said. “Term life insurance is an affordable and easy-to-understand type of life insurance that covers your beneficiaries for a predetermined number of years. If, for example, you have a mortgage and young children to raise, you might want $750,000 worth of insurance. Instead of buying one 30-year term policy, you could buy three $250,000 policies — one with a 10-year term, one for 20 years and one for 30 years — to save money on the premiums.

How much does term life insurance cost? Insurance giant Progressive says a 10-year, $250,000 term policy costs $13.48 a month for a 30-year-old man, $16.31 for a 40-year-old man, $32.84 for a 50-year-old man and $74.82 for a 60-year-old man. The cost is less for a woman at each age level.

“For term life insurance, a simple rule of thumb is to purchase a life insurance policy that’s five to 10 times your annual salary,” Parisi said. “If you have substantial debts you might want to be on the higher end of coverage; if you have less, maybe you need a little less coverage. Additionally, you should choose a term length that lasts through substantial personal and financial milestones. For example, if you just bought a house, you may need a 30-year policy so coverage lasts the duration of your mortgage.”

It’s worth asking yourself whether you have adequate financial resources for your family should you die unexpectedly. If you don’t, life insurance is a consideration.
