It's funny because I spent most of this re-watch wondering why the hell I thought Nathaniel was the better option for Rebecca when most of their relationship in s2/3 was pretty terrible but Nathaniel is objectively the mvp of s4 and it reminded me of why I like him the best for her (if I have to pick one, I mean. I still think she should probably go and find someone new, or date Valencia). Because really the thing she didn't like about Nathaniel was the 'corporate piece of trash' persona he put on and not his actual personality. I think they would work so much better now, and besides there's something very sweet about the fact that once she broke up with him-seemingly for good-he didn't use that as an excuse to go back to his old ways and instead realized that it already cost him one person he loves and took the opportunity to better himself.

Rebecca’s voice fills Nathaniel’s ear the second he answers his phone. “Should I bring a jacket with me?” 

“Hello?”

“Yeah, hi,” she says. “The weather there, what’s it like? What kind of clothes should I pack? I tried looking it up, but I found the usual recommendations. Comfortable walking shoes, layers, cotton blends. But that’s not very helpful because I want to blend in while I’m there since the monkeys are trained to spot tourists from a mile away, right? I don’t want to embarrass you in front of your monkey friends.”

He sits up in bed and rubs at his eyes. “Wait. Do you think I train monkeys to attack tourists?”

“No,” she says, sounding awfully offended for someone calling at midnight their time to spout utter nonsense. “I think you train them to avoid tourists because tourists are the clueless assholes who’ll try to whisk them out of their natural habitat to live in a mansion in Texas.”

“Well, yes,” he says dryly. “Texas mansion owners are a huge threat in our line of work.”

“So, that’s a ‘no’ to the jacket, or…?”

Nathaniel throws back the covers and pads over to his desk calendar even though he doesn’t need to check the date. He knows when she’s coming. “Second week of March, right?”

“Huh?” Before he can explain, though, Rebecca’s “Oh!” bursts through the crackly phone speaker. “Right, right. Yes. March 11th, barring international crisis. Or AJ deciding to quit Rebetzel’s.”

“It’ll be raining,” he says, tracing his fingertips along the black edges around the date in question on his calendar as though she’s there in its place. “Definitely bring a coat.”

“Okay,” Rebecca says, her voice taking on a hushed quality. “I will.”

“I miss you,” he says, and then worries he’s not supposed to have, not in a hushed voice and in the middle of the night, when everything takes on a heady quality.

Her reply comes without hesitation, though. “I’m gonna climb you like the tree that you are the second I see you.” Beat—sweat pricks along the back of his neck. Then, she says, “N-not in a sex way, necessarily, I just haven’t seen your face in so long, and so I’m really looking forward to that but I won’t be able to see it from the ground because you’re so unreasonably tall so I’ll have to—”

“You don’t have to explain yourself,” he says, smiling as his hand falls away from the calendar and he turns back for bed. “I know what we are and what we aren’t.”

She snorts. “That makes one of us.”

For his own peace of mind, he chalks that comment up to the hour. “My face will be waiting for you when you get here.”

“And the monkeys?”

His smile grows. “Well, I can’t bring them to the airport.”

“Because of all the tourists,” she says sagely.

“Obviously.”

“I can’t wait,” she says, back to whispering.

“Me, either,” he says, pulling his sheets up over his head so he can muffle the rest of the world and pretend she’s already there with him.

What did u think of the ending of crazy ex? I was rooting for Rebecca to end up with Nathaniel lol

I loved the ending. One of the reasons I still love the show so much (other than of course the memorable characters & fantastic songs that I still listen to regularly of course) is that I believe it wrapped up everyone’s arcs in such a satisfying way.

I was also rooting for Nathaniel in a way but I’m actually glad that Rebecca did not end up with a man. That would have been an incredibly unsatisfying & cheap way to end her arc after the entire series established that she needed to learn to be happy on her own & with her platonic relationships. For me, despite how much I love Rebecca/Nathaniel, them ending the series as a couple would have felt like an insult to Rebecca’s arc. And honestly, it would have undermined Nathaniel’s reasons for changing & growing as a person too, & made Rebecca feel like his narrative “reward” a trope I despise. So, I couldn’t be happier with the way the series ended, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I DO however believe that there is more than a small chance that Rebecca & Nathaniel pursued a relationship after the events of the series, because they had both grown so much as people & had a strong friendship & respect for each other. I do think that Nathaniel was the only romantic interest who truly understood Rebecca & who she had a chance at a healthy relationship in the future with. I actually prefer that as a head canon & something to explore in post series fanfics though, because I don’t think them “ending up together” would have worked at ALL within the context of the series. Please don’t take that as me being anti Rebecca/Nathaniel though lol their romance was one of the best parts of the show to me & I do like to believe they went on to pursue a relationship maybe a year or two after the events of the finale! That would give them time to remain friends & continue growing as people & existing without a romantic relationship, something that I believe would be healthy for both of them.

The way Nathaniel reacted to Rebecca stalking his dad cemented him as her best love interest in my mind. He calmly stated they needed to have a talk, he didn't pull away or run away, took the time to process it without making her feel abandoned, validated both of their feelings, recognized her good intentions then explained that it was still unacceptable behaviour despite her intentions and asked her to never do it again. I get that Rebecca was in a vulnerable state and still very new to therapy and I understand the reasons she broke up with him I really do it's bad timing. But god every Rebecca related thing Nathaniel does just brings me to tears every damn time. Like far be it from me to praise a man for doing the bare minimum but Rebecca can go over the top sometimes and most other characters' reactions are understandable but Nathaniel doesn't even blink and never fails to see her true intentions even when they don't excuse the behaviour and just like every scene I think of the phrase 'to be loved is to be seen' and Nathaniel sees her for who she truly is and never looks away and I just
