Apollo Program: Block I Command and Service Modules

The Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) contract was award to North American Aviation on November 28, 1961. At the time, the plan was to land the entire CSM on the lunar surface via the direct ascent and the initial design did not include a means to dock with another spacecraft. Later on this was changed to the lunar orbit rendezvous and lunar landing would be preform via the Lunar Module. This required a major redesign of the CSM and in 1963, NASA decided the most efficient way to keep the program on track was to proceed with the development in two versions:

Block I: the preliminary version for early low Earth orbit test flights only.

Block II: the new lunar-capable version, which included a docking hatch, incorporating weight reduction and lessons learned from the Block I.

The CSM Block I was to be used for all uncrewed Saturn IB (AS-201 & AS-202) and Saturn V (AS-501 & AS-502) test flights, plus two manned missions. This was changed to only one in late 1966, being Apollo AS-204, aka Apollo 1. After the Apollo 1 fire all manned missions were to use the improved Block II versions.

Block I Command and Service Modules produced:

CSM-001: systems compatibility test vehicle, used on propulsion tests at White Sands Missile Range. Completed tests on September 7, 1968. CSM scrapped.

CSM-002: used for powered on tumble abort tests, flew on A-004 Little Joe II, January 20, 1966, at White Sands Missile Range. Modified to 002A.

CM-002A: used to in land drop tests. Modified to 002B

CM-002B: used on pogo tests at Downey, California. Modified to BP-23. On display

On display at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, New York.

CSM-003: cancelled before construction began

CSM-004: structural tests, CM modified to 004B.

CM-004A: Used for Thermal and dynamic tests, redesignated BP-27 on the Saturn I Block II (SA-5D). On display.

On display with the Saturn I Block II Dynamic Test Vehicle at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

CM-004B: Tested a new unified hatch design at Downey, California. CM offered to Smithson but declined, later scrapped by Rockwell at Downey, CA.

CSM-005: cancelled before construction began

CSM-006: CM used for systems capability tests and modified to Block II for ESC tests at AiResearch in Los Angeles, CA. Later used for demonstrating tumbling debris removal systems. CM offered to Smithsonian but declined, later scrapped. SM redesignated as SM-010, on display with BP-23A.

BP-23A and SM-010 on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

CSM-007: various tests including acoustic vibration and drop tests, and used as a ground test vehicle. CM modified to 007A. SM used for fitcheck of docked model facility, current location is unknown.

CM-007A: used by Astronauts for water egress training, water-survival training and extended recovery training in the Gulf of Mexico. CM was refitted with Block II improvements. Underwent testing for Skylab at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory, Eglin AFB, Florida, 1971–1973. On display.

CM-007A is on display at the Seattle Museum of Flight, Seattle, WA.

CSM-008: complete systems spacecraft used in thermal vacuum tests. CM modified to 008A, SM offered to Smithsonian but declined (August 1973), later scrapped by Rockwell International at Downey, CA May 1977.

CM-008A: used in land tests at Downey, CA. CM scrapped by March 1971.

CSM-009: flew on AS-201 (later designated Apollo 2), CM modified to 009A.

CM-009A: modified with support structural tests for land impacts. CM offered to Smithsonian but declined, on display.

On display at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska

CSM-010: originally intended for a launch abort test, mission cancelled and CM was modified into 004A. SM cancelled.

CSM-011: flew on AS-202 (later designated Apollo 3), CM modified to 011A.

CM-011A: used on land impacts tests and extensively damaged. CM offered to Smithsonian and is on display.

On display at the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda, California.

CSM-012: intended for AS-204 (Apollo 1). CM is in storage at Langley Research Center. SM scrapped. Hatch on Display.

CSM-013: cancelled before construction began

CSM-014: intended for AS-205 (Apollo 2). CM disassembled as part of Apollo 1 investigation and modified to 014A. SM used on AS-502 (Apollo 6).

CM-014A: ground testing. CM Scrapped May 1977.

CSM-015: CM cancelled before construction began. SM-015 was used with BP-30 and LES-014 for Swing Arm tests and backup spacecraft for Apollo 6. On display.

CSM-016: CSM cancelled before construction began. Only the launch escape tower (LES) completed, on display with BP-27 the Saturn I Block II (SA-5D) at U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

CSM-017: flew on Apollo 4 (AS-501). CM on display. SM destroyed when the propellant tank explosion during ground testing. CM on display.

CSM-018: cancelled before construction began

CSM-019: cancelled before construction began

CSM-020: flew on Apollo 6 (SA-502). SM flew on Apollo 4. CM on display.

3/25 Cyborg 009 The Stage Short Recap

Spoilers ahead for those who haven't watched the announcement themselves.

Right off the bat we got a sneak peak at the theatrical poster! Not sure how I was expecting 005 and 008 to be handled, but the brown face is disappointing and certainly alienating to global fans of color.

However, the costumes are beautiful and the contrasting pant/coat combo works great. I really love the athletic cut and quilted details on the coats. Ivan is not surprisingly, a prop doll in this production. Personally to me this means we have a 50/50 chance of him either being occasionally lifted by stage ninjas for 'levitating' effects or they just hook him up to wires and let him free like Asamov intended. Only time will tell...

We also got our first glance of the new cyberpunk redesigns of 0010+ and 0010-!

With stage adaptions especially I think it is good to treat them as their own canon. With that in mind I am curious to see how they flesh out the rest of the plot through costume design. My initial reaction was that they reminded me of Team Magma and Team Aqua grunts from older pokemon games. They are very fresh and stylish though, which I think is a good contrast to how formal and outdated Gilmore is presented.

It was revealed that certain performances will also conclude with character specific special events, and include character postcards as well. Very jealous of the folks who get to see this live, and more so for those that attend a photo op!

The interviews with Ivan are sure to be interesting... I am curious to see if they have Nanami interviewing the doll or Ivan's voice actor. I guess we will have to wait and see lol.

To wrap things off the main cast did a short introductory performance, and boy did I try to get some good screen grabs.

How are we feeling about twinkified 002? His lil ponytail moment was a surprise but seems more appropriate for complicated choreographed fight scenes.

Francoise seems to be the newest siri update in this canon, but damn if she doesn't make it look good.

I know the first thing the costume department is doing is adding velcro to that scarf! It just couldn't keep up lol

Changs actor has a few stage position issues but carried on with so much confidence it was almost a non-issue. I am also so impressed if that is a) a hairpiece or b) his real hair he committed to have for the play.

The bloke himself, had an intro as exciting as Francoise but you could tell they were also very excited to play the part. I am probably the most excited to see 007 and 009 perform from this intro alone.

,':^/ if someone doesn't take the bronzer away from him I will get the spray bottle...

Starting off, we have Neima! I was going to include her un-sealed appearance on here too, but I realized after drawing it that... I actually didn't really like the design and thought it was way too cluttered-

So that one will show up later after I have some time to redesign-

But anyways, to actually talk about Neima-

She's a vengeful spirit, though her grudge has long since been resolved, so she's free to move on to the afterlife whenever she pleases (so doesn't really care to though)

She seems to have something against the Inori Shrine. Either that or she just enjoys picking fights with the shrine maidens there.

Though she's been sealed away at the moment, she is more than capable of breaking herself out. She just doesn't want to right now.

She's an incredibly powerful magician who specializes in sun and moon themed magic

She has (allegedly) tried to take over the world in the past

It should be Very Obvious what she's inspired by. Or rather, who.

Laura would’ve beaten the shit out of first season Steve. Definitely had a hate flirt with Billy and would’ve busted Jason’s face and stolen Chrissy from him. Probably try to flirt with Robin too.

Violet would’ve likely befriended Barb and possibly Robin. She wouldn’t really involve herself with the main cast. Maybe sit with the hellfire club at lunch.

Wanda would have taken on a similar role like Steve of group babysitter. Mama mode activated.

Eve would have joined Hellfire Club and likely redesigned their t-shirt to be more badass. She definitely would crush on Eddie, and be a front line fighter against Vecna.

Madelyne would have strolled into Hawkins and just sideline watched the entire dumpster fire unleash. Maybe helped out once the gross Mind Flayer hit the mall.

Emma would have been a silent partner of Dr.Brenner’s operation and only gotten involved after the #001 disaster. She’d then betray everyone to the US government while having a back up deal with KGB.

Since I promised I would shame my ocs in here, I will do it

But I will do it in parts, because I have around 32 robot masters and a stardroid.

I will share four robots per post; With means that, out of two complete lines of eight robots, four robots will be posted, and then the other half posted another day.

Starting with today

The Hazemberg Line (DHN):

DHN.001 - Bird Droid (Recently redesigned)

Bird Droid is a canary-based robot made with the function to assist in air rescuing and, sometimes, as a weather broadcaster. Their body is light enough to allow them to move freely in mid air with no difficulties, and the small feather shaped radar on their head allows them to receive any kind of details about their surroundings.

Bird Droid is an enthusiastic robot, but also really gullible, like a kid. One of the various things they like to do is flying, doing their everyday job or just to train their agility on flight.

There is also the fact that they have a really weak memory and some minimal problems with direction sense due to an animal attack they ended up suffering while at their first days of their functionality; That attack was also the reason why Bird Droid is such an gullible robot. Even with the incident destroying Bird Droid to an advanced level, Hazemberg had never fully fixed them since a robot that was working alongside her with the fixing job ran away. It ends up making Bird Droid into an "unfinished robot".

That attack also bought an fear upon any predatory animals to Bird Droid.

DHN.002 - Cotton Man

Cotton Man is a cotton-based harvesting robot made to help in the production of cotton, its growth and its collection. His head, arms and legs are covered in pure cotton, and can be used at times when natural conditions aren't appropriate enough for the growth of such plants.

He is a robot with a calm nature that would rather stay focused on his function than doing any other activities. This makes him into a "closed" robot, excluding himself from talking too much and avoiding any kind of social events, and to continue with his systematic routine and not causing changes to it.

In his spare time, he does crochet with his own cotton, usually prefers to do scarfs and blankets, since those are easier to do (according to him). And due to cotton being an easily flammable material, he grew an extreme fear of fire (pyrophobia).

As an extra fun fact, he has a small little group of robots called “Cottlings”. Those little robots (that are similar to Cotton Man’s first design) help him out with carrying all the cotton he produces/collects and sending it to other worker.

DHN.003 - Hunter Man (Recently redesigned)

Hunter Man was a robot that initially had the function for arctic ecological investigation, but was later modified to work as a hunting machine, completely changing his helpful function for turning into a fighting robot. He fights with an ax that is attached to his hand which the sharp part of it is covered by an paralyzing poison that affects any living thing that gets harmed by his blade, but it does not affect other robots. The same substance can be found in his bite.

Along with fighting abilities, he has functional vertical slit pupils, but those mostly react to emotions rather than to the environment. The pupils get smaller when he is scared or angry, and dilate when he likes something (or when something gets his attention. He pretty much acts like a cat btw)

Hunter doesn't like to be around people he is not familiar with, getting defensive about himself and, if things get worse about his trusting sense, he can end up attacking the individual. That is a defect that Hazemberg is still trying to fix, but with no current success.

He likes to stay in the woods, especially in the darkest areas of nature, without a specific reason for such behavior.

DHN:004 - Lantern Man

Lantern Man is a lantern-based robot with the function to guard cemeteries during night time, and sometimes, as a night guard in other locations as well. The fire on his torso is alway lit up, and shall never be blown out, since that is the source that keeps him functioning. His surface is way too hot to the touch, which doesn't allow him to get any kind of physical contact, making him a lonely robot. His eyes were specially made to see well in darkness, but he doesn't usually need that effort to see since his flame is strong enough to light up a room. For some reason, his hands are substituted with fire cannons.

Lantern Man is a big fan of ghosts and any type of paranormal topic, but his shyness makes him avoid talking about his interests since he thinks people would find that uninteresting. He has a few insecurities towards how his eyes look, which is the reason why he wears a lantern hat to cover them up. He would only take the hat off if forced to or if his creator asks him to.

Due to the fact he is a night guard, he has a big difficulty staying awake during daytime, and also turns very weak during that state. This classifies him exclusively as a nocturn robot.

PT: Neste trabalho foi proposto realizarmos o re-design de um álbum á nossa escolha e a criação de um booklet para o mesmo. Desta forma, escolhi o primeiro EP da artista alternativa e independente, Clairo.

Diary 001 é o seu primeiro EP e decidi abordar o novo design de uma forma mais sofisticada na sua capa, inspirando-me fortemente em motivos florais e relacionados com a Arte Noveau, enquanto o seu booklet contém um registo mais jovem, sem deixar o esquema cromático utilizado na capa e contra-capa.

O EP inicia-se com a faixa “Hello?” no qual a artista está em chamada com alguém. Desta forma, inspirei-me nesta questão do telemóvel e as aplicações associadas ao mesmo hoje em dia para ilustrar cada música, associando sempre uma aplicação diferente presente no nosso smartphone. 

ENG: It was proposed that we redesign an album of our choice and create a booklet for it. Therefore, I chose the first Clairo's EP.

Diary 001 is her first EP, and I decided to approach the new design in a more sophisticated way for its cover and backcover, heavily inspired by floral motifs and elements related to Art Nouveau, while keeping the same color scheme used on the front and back covers in its booklet.

The EP begins with the track "Hello?" in which the artist is on a call with someone. Hence, I drew inspiration from the theme of mobile phones and the associated apps nowadays to illustrate each song, always associating a different app on our smartphones.

Idk if I’m gonna do this much but I’m thinking of going through the models I have and talking a bit about their design and stuff, and today I’ll be taking you through the hero ship of Enterprise, the… uh… Enterprise…

Okay so this isn’t really the Enterprise, it’s the Enterprise as it appeared in the Mirror Universe two-parter so it has some extra livery to make it distinct from its prime universe counterpart. The design of the ship is unchanged outside of that and I don’t have the prime universe model so I’ll be using this model to talk about both.

With Enterprise (the show, which I’ll be calling ENT from now on) being a prequel, there was a lot of pre-existing design to draw from when designing the ship, and it was heavily influenced by the design of the Akira-class, which I believe was first seen in Star Trek: First Contact in the battle of Sector 001.

The top-down view especially shows the common traits: the usual Starfleet saucer, with twin booms starting ahead of the bridge area and extending back to connect the hull to the nacelle pylons, with a pod-like element in the middle of the pylons. There’s also the cutout in the forend of the saucer (though the Akira doesn’t have the main deflector there) and a small “step” just behind the name and registry number, the same location of (and different colour around) the saucer’s impulse engines, and the use of impulse engines in the end of the twin booms.

The Enterprise opted to go for a more classic layout with the warp nacelles raised above the saucer, which fits better with the older designs (TOS Enterprise, Excelsior) and allowed for a planned refit later in the show which would add the secondary hull that had been common for the majority of Star Trek and remove the pod while retaining the booms.

The nacelles would also have been redesigned to more closely resemble the style of the pilot episode Enterprise, with spines protruding from the centre of the bussard collectors, which is a small touch I really appreciate. I think this would also be the first “Federation” ship to have a secondary deflector dish as well?

Sadly the show was cancelled before the refit came to the screen, I think the cancellation happened partway through production of season 4, which would explain why the ending felt so rushed and underwhelming.

I do quite like the design of the NX-01 Enterprise, I think it works really well as a precursor to the NCC-1701 Enterprise though I am a bit disappointed that it incorporates elements of the (almost entirely unrelated) Akira-class so heavily, and seems to lean more towards TNG era aesthetics than what we expect from TOS/TMP era. The circular windows resembling the portholes of our naval vessels is a nice touch and goes well with the interior design feeling more like a modern-day military ship/submarine (though submarines don’t have windows).

However, the Enterprise design does raise an interesting point. It’s a pre-Federation ship, made by United Earth under supervision from the Vulcans, and yet later Federation designs which you’d think would have input from dozens of species still retain these “human” design elements. We know that Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarite designs are vastly different (as seen in ENT) yet their design elements seem to be completely erased once the Federation is established in favour of human design language. It raises questions about the prevalence, even domination, of humans and human preferences in Starfleet, but that’s getting too far off-track.
