Rise of the TMNT Freaky Friday AU

I’ve had this head cannon for a while, but here’s a bit of what I’ve been thinking: Leonardo in the future accidentally switches places with his younger self. Old Leo goes back to when they were fighting Hypno and Warren. At the same time, younger Leo portals to the Kraang infested future.

Leonardo squints, hand clasping tight around his student’s shoulder.

He squeezes lightly, the battle gear springing back in response. Smiling, Leon grips tighter. This was it. This is where they would finally split ways. Casey had a job to do, both of them did. He hated to see him go but knew it wasn't about him.

They failed their last attack…but thanks to Mikey, a new route opened.

Casey looked up and eyes already shining with anxiety. “Casey,” shell he was proud of his kid. “When you’re done saving the world, do me a favor.”

While Leon couldn’t see the mission through, he trusted Casey. After all, he made Mikey proud (though that was an easy task on its own). April had been delighted the moment he crawled into their lives. He had to admit, Cass was right from the beginning – their kid is a Hamato.

“Grab a slice!” And Leonardo moves, using his momentum to chuck his kid through the portal and onto part seven hundred hundred and something of the plan. Honestly, he's too old for this. Leo had lost count of what step they were on. Things changed but even this far after mass extinction there was always hope. Casey carried that objective.

Casey screams, arm reaching out in morbid protest but Leon turns before he regrets his decision.

Leonardo had a mission to do.

While the controlled Kraang fights turned grim on most missions; the robotic mindless ones were easier to handle. They focused on movements. So, while Casey was a rapidly retreating foe, Leonardo was a flaring combatant barreling toward them. So, he strikes out, blocking an attack – slashing to the other side and focusing. He needs to portal just beyond the crushed apartment buildings; and while, grabbing their attention was important, confusing them would be icing on the cake. Above one of the larger beasts towers over him. Its eye brightens and Leo kicks himself into high gear. Lightning sparks down his back and through his legs. Seconds later, he's just past the beam, portal already created. Slipping through, Leo's leg is last and he feels a familiar sharp burn before the portal closes with a blunt clap.

His ears ring as red, orange, and blue lights flash. Pulsing, the lights leave Leo stumbling. Regardless, he's quick and seizes his breath while standing up, blinking. His vision "Bleh" Leo mouths out His mouth feels dry and tastes sour, he sticks his tongue out in response.

The first thing that registers is thinking how the hell they had missed such a nice-looking van. Honestly, no matter how many scavenging hunts, Leo was never this lucky -

"Uhhhh," someone unfamiliar mutters and Leo points his sword.

It was Hypno...

His chin was pointed up and feet scuffling back ever so gently. Then, Leo notices Warren Stone in the front seat. The worm is looking back, eyes open and definitely not on the road that the van he was driving was currently barreling down.

"Well, this is awkward." Hypno's eyes are wide, mouth open, gobsmacked.

And really, Leonardo can't blame him it was awkward. Out of all the things was prepared for today, seeing his old foe was not one of them.

The floor jabs quickly to the right and Leo moves his sword out of the way as Hypno stumbles on his feet. Then, the ground lurches forward and Leo flies backward, head colliding against the metal floorboards. "Duck!" Someone cries. Leo looks up just in time to see Hypno flying towards him. The hippo lands right on top and Leo feels his breath pushed out. Abruptly, the car's interior erupts into flames as metal screeches from the heat. Above, a dark inky sky - one that Leo hasn't seen in years. He blinks and notices buildings - tall, lively buildings fly by him. They are lit with electricity, and behind the hum of screaming New Yorkers, it all suddenly hits him.

Hypno sits up slightly, hand grabbing his head and Leonardo suddenly registers Warren Stone's scream of absolute terror.

Seconds later, a red neon figure soars overhead and Leo sits up as much as he can before his eyes go wide.

Raphael lands, shouting a phrase while slamming his fists into the ground. The van buckles, crinkling inward and Leo grabs onto Hypno the two of them in an awkward embrace. They're catapulted up and out, flying through the sky - right behind a large mystic Raph. The red turtle is jumping forward, arm outstretched to catch a key. Leonardo knows what should have come next - a mistake. He wants to look away, but like a morbid trainwreck, Leo can't look away. Over the past several years he pushed this moment down. Always knowing he was to blame for the Kraang invasion. The worst part was that he knew it was his fault; knew that if he hadn't made a mistake then the world wouldn't have died. His brothers, father, friends...all of the millions of people died because of this moment.

But nothing happened.

No blue portal opening to retrieve a world-ending key.

Then, the ground rushes up to meet the two of them and Leo feels his shell scrape against the asphalt before they begin to twirl to a stop. Just a bit away, Raphael lands heavy in his mystic form, ground cracking under his massive frame. He spins around, finger-pointing into the air and shouting in victory.

Leo pushes up again, heart pounding in his ears as he glances around the New York streets. The world is lit in flames and buildings above are caked with damage from the scuffle. Yet, Leo is stuck, frozen in place - not only from the shock that he had traveled back in time - but also due to Donatello staring him down, gobsmacked.
