Road Games (dir. Richard Franklin, 1981)
Road Games was sold to me as "Rear Window on a truck" and while I guess that description is technically true, it doesn't do the oddness of this movie justice.
Set in Australia, this movie follows Quid (Stacy Keach), an easy-going American truck driver who suspects a man driving in a green van of being a serial killer of young women. Soon joined by a hitch-hiker he dubs "Hitch" (Jamie Lee Curtis), the two engage in a cat-and-mouse game with the possible murderer, all the while Quid is pursued by the authorities, who think the evidence all points to him.
This is technically a mystery-thriller, but it has such a laid back tone that it defies what you'd expect such a movie to be like. It has the vibe of a 70s character study much of the time-- we're just hanging with Quid and "Hitch" as they travel the Australian road, encounter weird supporting characters, and wonder about the potential killer, though the noose slowly tightens as complications gradually arise. There are also some genuinely creepy moments, made all the more impactful because the tone is often so chill. Quid himself is an interesting character, a tough-minded sort used to a lonely, nomadic existence. This makes his friendship with "Hitch" quite endearing and lends a poignant note to their collaboration in hunting down the bad guy.
At first, I was unsure if I liked the film, but once I settled into its groove, it was more enjoyable. Director Richard Franklin was an apprentice of Alfred Hitchcock-- he was invited to see the filmmaker at work on Topaz and Family Plot, and would later make Psycho II. If you liked Psycho II, then Road Games is quite similar, a Hitchcockian thriller with elements of the early 80s slasher craze and the more down-to-earth character studies of the 70s, by then fast going out of fashion.
