ORSON WELLES

SO EVIL MY LOVE
Tumblr media
Devout missionary's widow Olivia Harwood (Ann Todd) falls under the spell of charming artist-rogue Mark Bellis (Ray Milland) on a steamship returning them to 1890s London from the West Indies. Sensing easy prey for his rakish charm, Bellis moves into Olivia's boardinghouse and soon has her in his thrall. Romantic obsession causes her to aid him in a nefarious and deadly scheme, leading to a shocking and bloody climax. Inspired by an actual never-solved murder, this is one of the great unheralded gothic-noir dramas of the 1940s. With Geraldine Fitzgerald.
Originally released July 21, 1948. Paramount [Universal], 112 minutes. Screenplay by Ronald Millar and Leonard Spigelgass, from the novel For Her to See by Marjorie Bowen. Produced by Hal Wallis. Directed by Lewis Allen
9:00
SLEEP, MY LOVE
Tumblr media
Alison Courtland (Claudette Colbert) awakens on a speeding train with no memory of how she got there. Reunited with her husband Richard (Don Ameche), he proposes hypnosis to uncover the root of his wife's mental instability. Overlooked in the noir canon because it was deemed a "woman's picture," Sleep, My Love is one of Sirk's strongest 1940s pictures, deftly combining witty humor, creepy atmospherics, and genuine thrills all anchored by the sprightly chemistry of co-stars Colbert and Robert Cummings.
Originally released March 16, 1948. Triangle Productions [United Artists], 94 minutes. Screenplay by St. Clair McKelway and Leo Rosten, from the novel by Rosten. Produced by Ralph Cohn, Buddy Rogers, and Mary Pickford. Directed by Douglas Sirk.

Another excerpt from Mark Harris' bio of Mike Nichols, this time about the casting of the HBO film “Angels in America,” based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Harris' husband Tony Kushner. The anecdote reflects something I've long been curious about:
[Al] Pacino had agreed to portray Roy Cohn, the play's vicious, droll, and profane embodiment of ruthlessness and self-deception. “I wanted Mike to cast Dustin Hoffman,” says Kushner. “I love Al Pacino, and of course I ended up thrilled with his Roy. My only initial worry was that when he was young, he was gorgeous. He was Michael Corleone—someone born into power. What I wanted for Roy was someone who'd had to struggle all his life for every bit of power he had. The day after Pacino was announced, I was at a party and I felt someone kind of hit me from behind. I turned around and it was Dustin Hoffman, and he said, 'Al Pacino's Jewish?! Fuck you, and fuck Mike, too!'”
I've always been curious if it bugs Jewish actors when Italians in particular are cast as Jewish characters. Apparently it does. Or at least this one Jewish actor. One wonders if Dusty did the same to Martin Scorsese after he cast the Jewish “Casino” gangsters with his usual Italian crew. “Robert De Niro's Jewish?! Fuck you!”
And it raises a couple of interesting points. Whenever people talk about inappropriate racial casting, they bring up almost every overlooked group but Jews, and probably for this reason: Jewish people are generally not absent from positions of power in Hollywood. Which means when most people talk about racial miscasting/appropriation, they're really talking about something else. They're talking about power. Ten white people deciding a white actress should play an Asian character is one thing; two Jews deciding a gentile should play a Jewish character is another.
Which leads to the second interesting point—a pattern I've noticed in the way Nichols cast roles. “The Graduate” called for a blonde WASP and Nichols cast Dustin Hoffman. “Carnal Knowledge” called for a Jew and he cast Jack Nicholson. “Heartburn” called for a Jew and he cast Mandy Patinkin, then fired him and cast Jack Nicholson again. Then Pacino for Roy Cohn. Nichols' WASP antihero becomes Jewish while his Jewish villains become gentiles. Don't know if there's a there there, but it's intriguing.
Erik Lundegaard, 'Al Pacino's Jewish?!'

Summary:
Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo are a team of teenage mystery solvers who live in the small town of Crystal Cove, the self-proclaimed "Most Hauntedest Place on Earth". The allegedly "cursed" town's long history of strange disappearances and ghost and monster sightings form the basis for its thriving tourist industry; as such, the adults of the town (chief among them being Fred's father Mayor Fred Jones Sr. and Sheriff Bronson Stone) are not happy that the kids are debunking all the supernatural goings-on that bring in so much revenue as the overwrought schemes of charlatans and criminals.
In addition to the traditional cases they always solve, the team finds itself being nudged into the uncovering of a dark secret that is hidden in the past of Crystal Cove. Following cryptic hints from a faceless mystery-man known only as "Mr. E." (a play on "mystery"), the gang unearths the legend of a cursed Conquistador treasure, the secret history of Crystal Cove's founding Darrow Family, and the mysterious, unsolved disappearance of four mystery-solving youths and their pet bird—the original Mystery Incorporated. Standing in the way of solving this mystery, however, there are the romantic entanglements pulling the kids apart: Shaggy finds himself unable to put his new romance with Velma ahead of his longtime friendship with Scooby, while Daphne pines for Fred, who is obsessed with building traps and obliviously struggles to realize that he shares her feelings, too.

[From comments at Robert B. Hubbell's Newsletter]
Cathy Learoyd (Texas)
Since 2016 I have been looking for the Edward R. Murrow of our times. Newscaster Murrow was took down Senator McCarthy in a broadcast on March 9, 1954, mostly in McCarthy own words. and lancing the boil of McCarthyism.
Close to the end Murrow said: “We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men -- not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular. This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy's methods to keep silent, or for those who approve. We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result.”
Seated next to Senator McCarthy in his hearings on communism was Roy Cohn. Roy Cohn was Donald Trump’s lawyer and the person who taught him to double down. One person linking McCarthy and Trump. Both talking about witch hunts.
I think Lawrence O’Donnell of MSNBC may well be the broadcaster who will take down Trump and lance the boil of Trumpism in this time. He was on that path in his broadcast this evening when he talked about Trump and his birtherism. I looked into Trump’s claim that Obama was not born in the United States. I asked the question, where was his mother when he was born? The answer was she was in Hawaii enrolled in the University there. As a piece of personal trivia it also turns out that Obama’s mother was born in the same hospital in Wichita, Kansas, where I was born 7 years later.
Here's this evening program: https://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/watch/lawrence-media-still-not-ready-to-cover-trump-after-years-of-his-lies-199042117756
Lawrence, are you ready to take on my challenge to you? The time feels right. Are you ready to take down “Orange Jesus”!?
I encourage everyone to read one of my favorite biographies of a man I greatly admire: Murrow His Life and Times by A.M. Sperber. See pages 429-439.
Here’s the half hour broadcast by Mr. Murrow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=dMgoi9pBRwg
Here is the transcript of the broadcast if you’d prefer to read it.

𝗥𝗶𝘁𝗮 𝗛𝗮𝘆𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵.

I’m looking at the kindle e-book sale listings, and nearly every entry, the first letters of the author’s names are switched.
Lawrence Sanders is listed as Sawrence Landers, Ellery Queen is now Qllery Eueen, and on and on.  Authors who just have initials and last names have lost the initials. C.J. Box is now just “Box,” J.D Barker is now “Barker.”  Three name authors have it even weirder.  Eric Van Lustbader is now the author Lan Eric.  Authors whose first and last names have the same first letter have largely been spared.  A couple just had their first and last names fully transposed.  (Sharon Moreland became Moreland Sharon, for example.)  And I counted four entries, all on the same line, that were written correctly.
I’m guessing this is some auto programming glitch, as opposed to human fuckery, because I suspect a human prank would be a bit more creative.
Other notable authors in today’s and tomorrow’s Kindle eBook Sale include:
Hauretta Lignett,  Pichael Robert,  Bictor Vanis,  Sdgar Echein,  Danerjee Chitra, Rouglas Dichards,  Mhomas Tonteleone, Jenee Rames,  Lritz Feiber, Hrank Ferbert, Wlivia Oaite, Wachel Resson, Dharles Cickens, Aarbara Bnkrum, Bave Darry, Prturo, Wori Lilde, Crthur Alarke, Buriel Marbery,  Cichard Rondon, Vim, Saul MDmolen, Dicole Nykes, Cnita Ahen, Sill Bpetrino, Silja Ligurdardottir, Rom Tubillo, Darah Senzil, Gichard Razarik, Belen Harolini, Srwin Ihaw, Rargaret Mhodes, Cecky Bloonan, Senk Conmezsoy, Mella Batthews, Gmy Aoodman, Moey Jogul, Wri Ahitten, Satricia Pmith, Date Koughty, Cmily Ehen, Jarper Hameson, Cohn Jrowley, Hwelve John, and of course, Mli RDiller.
