Holiday Romances?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, for me, this story seemed too slight and too much in line with the trope, but as I read further I came to feel for the characters and realised that there was more hidden in their depths that was slowly being drawn out by later chapters.
I did appreciate the taste and how dishes can be improved by something that is not the norm expected. Although I had to say the sandwiches did seem unappealing to me and I would try them. But I do experiment with my own cooking and yesterday I added a surprise ingredient to my pasta and crème fraiche plus dish. I make this a lot with different proteins, but often fish based and last night I combined smoked trout with salmon pate and then added the surprise – a dessert pear. Fried in butter and olive oil, first it added a lovely crunch and flavour, plus some paprika, crème fraiche and mascarpone with fresh pasta. The day before I made a chilli with sausages and ham hock and sweetcorn soup for the sauce, and beef stock. I confess, I make up dishes on the sly according to what I have in the kitchen and fridge.
I guess the story ending was expected and in line with a holiday romance that isn’t. It was the emotions and characterisation of the sisters that I most enjoyed.

Happy Saturday! You probably can't tell but I rearranged my shelves a third time again. Yes this is different from one I posted this week too. This time it's mostly by genre with a few out of place ones. Rom coms with the rom coms and romance with romance. Books I read on another shelf which isn't pictured. I rearranged my Ikea Billy bookcase too by genre last week. *** #bookstagram #romanticcomedybooks #romancecontemporary #romancebookblogger #booksfordays #prettybookspines #tbrpost #weekendvibes #allbookedup https://www.instagram.com/p/CHlp6_bg5N2/?igshid=15dbvyvvs3ave

I find myself in a quandary as I can't relate to the main character in this book. She is somehow vague. Just as I think I know her, she floats away. I get the divorce and the running away. But for a person who keeps saying she is broke, she buys a lot of Stuff. And Cillian- well - the hot handyman is just too cliched and his temper is problematic. He is so reminiscent of the Gamekeeper that I can't see him any other way. Even his relationships with April and Madge slips away in my reader's mind. And then 'Hotel'. This is a Chalet Park. No hotel in sight. And just what hotel job did April do? Again hints but nothing clear. And then adding... into the mix as an excuse for an inability to conceive, when most medical texts say that properly treated it isn't. Or if hers was so bad that it was, why not a hysterectomy and get rid of the symptoms? So the storyline slips away from me too.

Sweet and Sour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A fun but yet serious book about what happens when a mid-life crisis hits – often the husband in a marriage, and how the wife deals with it.
Especially difficult when you have a late and unplanned child at Primary School and you are not a young mother …
And then you have a boss who seems incapable of doing anything at all for herself – she takes the concept of personal assistant just a tad too far… personal can be too personal you know?
Viv is capable of more, and wants to do more but life seems to have been stacked against her – until she finds that her husband leaving her brings out her strong side and she makes that elusive lemonade.
I enjoyed reading this book. Fiona always gives you a good giggle whilst making some serious points about how women are capable of so much more than they appear to others. Required reading for wives who leave far too much to husbands – or alternatively, let husbands do far too much. It’s fine to put yourself front and centre from time to time girls…
About the Author
Biography
Tumblr media
Fiona Gibson is the author of 15 romantic comedy novels, including the best-selling The Mum Who Got Her Life Back (Avon), which celebrates the empty nester years. Under the name of Ellen Berry, she also writes the heartwarming Rosemary Lane series (Snowdrops on Rosemary Lane is out in January 2020).
Fiona grew up in West Yorkshire, before working on Jackie and Just Seventeen magazines – in those heady pre-internet days when it was thrilling to get a free plastic mirror taped to the front of your magazine. She went on to edit More! magazine, where she introduced the infamous Position of the Fortnight. After having twin sons and a daughter, Fiona started to write novels, usually at night with the house full of toddlers and builders. She was sleep deprived anyway so it really didn’t make any difference.
She also loves to draw, paint and run – by some miracle she managed to finish the London Marathon 2019. With the kids all grown up now, she and her husband Jimmy live in Glasgow with their collie cross, Jack.

Social media and Connections
Whilst they say this is her debut novel, I have read her previous book – which was semi(?) autobiographical. I really like her style of writing.
The concept of ‘ghosting’ – that is going silent after several dates is interesting and also nasty. When you’ve been meeting up and regularly talking to people and then they go completely silent on you, yu always wonder why they did it, was it your fault, what could have happened, how could they do this to you and so on. Whether it is a male date or a female friend – at least you thought they were a friend until.. it takes a lok of self awareness to realize it is not you but them that is at fault. You did not cause this – they did and it is their own emotions and lack of empathy that has done this.
I liked the idea of her cookery books, and as a student, could really have done with the one about cooking on a 2 burner hob – though that was my first introduction as it happens, to cooking for myself when I had a small room in a house. I learned very simple 1 pot meals – my favourite being hot dogs and rice and peas all cooked together with a good dollop of tomato sauce!
Taking on the difficulties of living with someone who has Alzheimer’s was good. It is a scourge that is affecting so many older men – more than women in our friends – I knew only one woman with it, but several men with either that or a form of dementia which was equivalent.
It can be very difficult to adjust to. The forgetfulness, the emotional highs and lows, the wandering and getting lost and sometimes the physical rage and hitting out from frustration.  Even more difficult when the woman is many years younger than the man and was looking forward to more years of companionship than this illness gave them .

Stand up girl!
So there is Daisy. Not well educated but eager and happy to learn after a series of temping positions. And then she finds programming and loves it and teaches herself lots of interesting stuff. But she still doesn’t have any qualification and so when a promotion comes up at her current temping job, despite the fact that she has done brilliant work with their social media, the job is given to a new hire. And then there is Daisy’s long term relationship with a rather controlling male. Who takes her lack of formal education and social nous and makes her feel small and encourages her to depend on his opinion about everything. Until. And Daisy has to find her own way in the world - and finds a bookshop to hang out in - and romance blossoms. So far, so genre. What rescues this story is the writing style It was fun and amusing and empathetic. And thus enjoyable to read, without grammatical errors and not in need of either editing or proofreading.

Let's go to the Beach!
Love on a beach
This is book 1 in a series about 3 sisters who are running, somewhat reluctantly by some, the wedding planning business, their parents retired from.
They are situated in a real town – Cape May – near to Atlantic City which is a summer resort town.
Cape May is a city and seaside resort at the tip of southern New Jersey’s Cape May Peninsula. It’s known for its grand Victorian houses such as the Emlen Physick Estate, now a museum with a preserved interior from the era. Shops and restaurants line the Washington Street Mall, 3 pedestrianized blocks of Washington Street. The Cape May Lighthouse provides views across the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.
It certainly sounds nice..
The sisters are very different and this is the story of the sister who is ‘in control’ of the business and her difficulty with romance and her OCD tendencies towards the business. And his reluctance towards romance stemming from family history.
PS I love Lucy but she is spoilt and needs to a. Get her diet sorted; and b. Get some exercise! It has some fun moments and the child is delightful, and you can see the ups and downs clearly. The style is right for the genre and needs little proof reading. And it leads nicely into the next two books in the series – one of which has yet to be published!

Steele by name
Well I thought that these weren’t the first in the series about the Steele family, and checking on Amazon I find that they are books 12 and 13 in the series...
But that in the Kimani imprint (African American novels only) there is a number 89 in the series! So the story goes on...
These 2 novels take on the romances of the 2 youngest of the 6 sons of the family.
Whilst I thought these 2 books were reasonable for their genre, with gentle humour and nice story-telling, I found them rather short. But then if Brenda is turning out the numbers of books she is, she can’t write a longer length novel each time. And it may also be the norm for this imprint.
This left me wanting more depth from the characters and the stories.
Adequate but not exceptional.

A Romeo and Juliet novel
A town that doesn’t really exist but operates very much in the old medieval way where there is those with money on one side of a river, and those without on the other.  In some American towns it is also a railway line I understand. In England it would be the higher lane for the wealthy as the lower land would be marshy and prone to flooding.  And many would have the name Upper Town added.
Just for a change we have a female billionaire but we still have her falling for someone from the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ – see reference to railways here.
I was rather concerned with our heroine’s cousin – Kingsley. He was far too close to her for comfort. But what a family she has – and Kingsley too. Too much money and not enough character to be anything other than drags
A reasonably well written novel with some suspense and romance, but not exceptional.  It is a Romeo and Juliet without the  final deaths.
