Fear and Hunger x Shadows House

I'm just spitballing ideas here, please hang in with me.

Cahara enters the dungeons of fear and hunger first, he finds the girl and helps her out of the cage

He later finds Le'guard alive and takes him out of the dungeon, when Le'guard refuses, Cahara knocks him out since he won't be paid if the man doesn't come with him (or if he has significant evidence of his death, but he doesn't want to do that)

He also realized that the amnesia Le'guard claimed to have is fake because of his refusal to leave the dungeon

Cahara drags Le'guard back to Rondon's capital for his reward and gets enough money to get his lover/wife, Celeste, out of slavery.

Cahara questions Le'guard after he wakes up and somehow, Le'guard messes up and reveals that the girl, who has been with Cahara the entire time, was his child.

This pisses off Cahara since Le'guard leaving his daughter inside those dungeons makes him the worst definition of a deadbeat dad.

Cahara WANTS to let Le'guard back into the dungeons of fear and hunger, but word gets out that Le'guard escaped and that the mercenary was the one who freed him, high bounties are placed on both of their heads.

Cahara flees to protect his family and Le'guard follows him to avoid being thrown into a different prison (Rondon has since lost control of the dungeons of fear and hunger because of all the batshit insanity that has occurred there).

They flee to a small island off the coast which is governed by a different country and a noble house with no ties to Rondon, Soot Island ruled by the shadows house.

From here they immigrate and things seem to go back to normal, the girl is sent to school for the first time, Cahara goes back to being a mercenary, Le'guard plans out how to get back to the dungeon without being caught, and Celeste takes care of the girl while trying to encourage Le'guard to be an actual parent.

A bit later however, the girl (who Cahara named Helena in this au) is chosen during a selection and leaves to work in the shadows house.

Cahara is quite a bit upset at that but thinks she will be in good hands.

She becomes a 'living doll' of course and the name 'Helena' was given to her shadow master, who later on names the girl Hel (like the nordic god)

Helena and Hel were actually the original 'fifth pair' before Emilico frauded her way into the selection, which while confusing some of the adult shadows, didn't really change, Emilico and Kate's debut just had an extra member.

Yes, they passed the debut.

On Cahara's end, things start to get worse, the man begins to suffer from hallucinations of the dungeons he had escaped from, eventually he goes completely mad despite Celeste's attempts to save him

Things don't really pick up again until Edward (overseer of the shadows house's children wing for all the fear and hunger fans) preforms his obligation.

Low and behold, Cahara finally fully loses his shit and turns into a crow mauler (based on a fan theory around ending E of fear and hunger), Edward is the unlucky fucker who has to deal with this horse crap.

Le'guard also helps, saving Celeste and getting the creature out of public view so they can fight it.

Edward, his friends (Aileen and Gerald), and Le'guard fight this crow mauler but don't manage to kill it

Edward loses his eyes, Aileen, Le'guard, and Gerald break their bones and the crow mauler goes half-blind (it was Aileen's soot power which can mimic the flock of crows spell)

they flee and while everyone is brought to the 19th century's equivalent of a hospital, where Le'guard is recognized as a fugitive and is arrested.

When the patriarch of the shadows house, great grandfather, hears of the incident, he has Le'guard transferred into the adult's wing and locked up so he couldn't escape.

Great grandfather plans on using Le'guard as a political bargaining chip for Rondon.

Helena and Hel have just been doing their own thing up until now, while Hel is a scared and shy girl with a kind heart (the girl from fear and hunger), Helena is a bit different, as she seems to take after Le'guard in some ways, being called an aspiring Joan of arc (both are also mute).

Rum and Shirley were actually involved in moving Le'guard into the shadows house, Rum had more of a look out role, (Rum and Shirley are the pair that failed Kate's debut, Rum became a veiled doll who are the faceless servants of the shadows house and Shirley turned back into a morph and both are basically spies for Kate and her rebellion, sorry for the interruption, this is for the Funger fans).

Both wonder why a human is being held in the shadows house and Shirley goes to investigate, they manage to get the whole story so far out of Le'guard and Rum shares the info about a human being held inside the shadows house with Kate.

A few more letters back and forth and a deal is made, Kate will help Le'guard out of his cell and he will assist in her goal of destroying the shadows house, once that is done he will leave.

Rum and Shirley help smuggle him out and Le'guard 'disposes of' a veiled doll with a similar body type to him so he can take their place and hide (he did this because the shadows house deliberately disoriented and hid the entrance/exit from him, Rum only helped once he was already inside the shadows house), he also left behind a bunch of fake evidence to throw the shadows house off his tracks.

Helena is also part of the 'gathering of roses' (read: secret meetings that Kate does with her debut class), Le'guard acts as another spy and Helena eventually meets him somehow, leading to a lot of awkward conversations.

Back on the mainland, both D'arce and Ragnvaldr get the news of Le'guard's escape and bounty separately, they also hear of rumors that he moved to Soot Island so both travel there. (For different reasons, D'arce is a knight who worked under Le'guard and also his lover while Ragnvaldr's family was killed by his mercenary group and now he wants revenge)

Both arrive around the same time and are contracted to kill the wounded crow mauler that has since wandered off into the morph forest (the place morphs come from, who are the shadow's original form).

This is when D'arce and Ragnvaldr learn of the other's motivations and become enemies who reluctantly work together to kill Cahara's crow mauler, an adult shadow (shadow who has absorbed their living doll's face, what Edward and all shadows in the adult's wing are) name Thomas joins them, he was punished for breaking a rule of the shadows house by having his arm cut off and now Great grandfather wants him dead covertly since a bunch of adults still follow him.

They do kill the crow mauler this time, D'arce and Ragnvaldr turn on each other while Thomas decides to try and leave while he can, but tells the others of where Le'guard is now.

Both D'arce and Ragnvaldr are now trying to sneak into the shadows house to find and rescue/kill him before the other does.

Things that I am unsure of

Does Helena try to butter up Le'guard?

Celeste and her unborn child.

The end of the arc with Le'guard and Kate

Helena might get her hands on a soul stone and if Edward dies she uses it on his corpse and gets his soot powers, which she uses to speak (in Edward's voice too)

Some of my favorite moments from the shadows house Manga and anime

(of course spoilers ahead)

Anyone who's seen my previous post about my head cannons for mistress Shirley and Rum will immediately know that these two are my favorite more specifically Rum as she is just the sweetest little thing ever in the show

Here are some of the reasons why she's just so precious

Her photographic memory

Her ability to calculate things in her head very quickly

She's so shy that she has to use her finger to talk to people

She's actually a bit more tan than the rest of the characters making her stand out from that alone

The manga makes it clear that the animal associated with her would be a rabbit/bunny

She's incredibly shy around new people but enjoys people like emilico who are very outgoing and who can stand up for her

She doesn't like being a burden to other people around her (pretty sure a lot of us can relate to that)

I really do think that if mistress Shirley survived the debut she would have been a lot like Emilico just holding on to Rum hugging her and squeezing her face as rum lets people do that to her

She's totally touch starved

When I went back and looked through the manga I noticed that I wasn't the only person who thought Rum was too precious to hurt, it seems like a lot of other characters know to be gentle with her

For context about the scenes

Emilico pets Rum's hair in order to comfort her about her feelings about mistress Shirley and whether or not she deserves to save her during the debut

We never get to see this in the anime, but in the manga it's revealed that when Emilico and Rum first found the hut that had the orange tree in it rum was holding on to her dress the whole time and Emilico didn't seem to mind (it wouldn't surprise me if she told rum that it was okay for her to do that)

(Serious spoilers) During the chapter when they first meet Emilico, Shawn says close to the end of it that "the five of them will become close friends once they enter the house", and when he says that we see Lou putting her hand on Rum's back in a very gentle way as if to support her

(Serious spoilers) The last scene has Patrick patting Rum on the head as she looks like she's about to cry. Why let's just say him, Rum and Ricky were all yelled at by a mean Shadow causing them all to fly back in a cute anime style he pet her head in order to comfort her

And it's not just them being gentle with her it turns out many people also recognize her skills and compliment her for it

(seems like my head Cannon about her becoming friends with the future debut members was actually true I mean look at Matilda asking her to become friends with her that's the sweetest thing ever)

I think these scene speak for themselves

But my favorite part about all of this is her relationship with Emilico as the manga reveals in future chapters that the reason why Rum even has a bow on her finger to begin with is because of her

(Once again A Major spoilers but mostly for these two) for context, the name Rum and Rummy in the show come from a subconscious memory Rum has of her little toy bunny that she had back when she was in the village, the reason why she calls herself a Rum is because it comes from her old toys name… an old toy that just so happened to have a bow on its ear… the same bow that she now wears when we first met her, all the way up to the end of the debut. The lavender bow on Shirley's finger actually belonged to Rum before she entered the house (which explain the color she was given when she did enter the house)

This is one of the many reasons why I really love Rum, she is just a sweetheart of a character that just screams "MUST PROTECT!". I have a lot more head cannons for her than I do a Emilico or anybody else of this show, and I think it's because of the hidden potential they have with a character like her. They took full advantage of it and one of the earlier scenes and I hope they continue to do that. She's an underrated character with the most amount of potential for growth

another unrelated thought i had while thinking about kate’s backstory: i wonder if it’s significant in some way that kate was around 12 when she first began to produce soot. all of the debutantes that have been introduced so far have ranged from ages 11 to 13, so it’s safe to say that that may be the youngest age a human can be for a morph to imitate them. and since age 12 is generally considered to be the age at which most children begin to acquire critical thinking skills, it follows that morphs can’t develop a distinct personality and intellect from a child any younger than that

To serve Shadows House is the pride and joy of every living doll. So here’s a piece I started much earlier this year, before I watched season two, then picked it back up again after watching it, and now that I’m caught up in the manga wanted to finish up before the year is out! I really enjoyed Shadows House in both formats and am excited to see where it goes. I’m even planning a cosplay from it heh. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes some spooky mysteries, changeling & fae stories, or gorgeously coloured manga art! This will also be a print in 2023 for the cons I table & shop openings after it debuts there, so keep an eye out!

Shadow house outfits (slight manga spoilers)

Anybody who has seen shadows house knows about the outfits that Emilio and her Shadow Master's friends where but many people are still confused as to how they got these outfits or more specifically the inspiration behind these outfits

Well the manga itself actually has a cover page showcasing the shadow Masters outfits in great detail so instead of a character breakdown I'm going to do an outfit breakdown and how each shadow master's outfit is connected to their living dolls previous outfits.

This post will be a breakdown of each of those outfits as best as I can

The Shadowmasters outfits

Kate

Kate's outfit is mostly based off of a rose in both color and hair accessories, the elements of her outfit maintain

Her under shirt

Her top coat

Her dress

Her Petty skirt

White socks and red shoes

And most importantly her red rose hair clips

John

Despite the limited space we actually get a good idea of what John actually wears it's just as wild as him

His undershirt

A blue coat

His blue pants

And his white socks and blue shoes

Shirley

A more simpler outfit but still packed with a lot of importance mostly based off of the flowers of yarrow coliseum and lavender

Her undershirt

Her Petty skirt like pants

Her lavender dress

Her yarrow hair clip

Her lavender bow (fun fact about this I'll get to later)

And her white socks and purple shoes

Patrick

His outfit ironically enough reminds me of a lucky clover and his love for flowers definitely makes this outlet all the more ironic

His shoulder pads that have a white bow

His brown pants

His white socks and black shoes

(surprisingly one of the only ones to not have an undershirt)

Louise

And finally we have Louise a bit more simple but still extravagant at the same time must be pretty hard to do exercise and that kind of dress

Her signature flower is a yellow gerbera daisy which is all over her outfit, her neckline waist and shoes

Most importantly her gerbera hair clip

Each of these outfits look very extravagant and very fancy despite it needing quite a bit of assembly but where did the inspiration for the outfits come from where the shadows house get such amazing ideas well why not from the children they stole these ideas from

The living dolls selection outfits (spoiler warning)

Anybody who's seen shadows houses manga knows that before entering the house these were just regular kids and for the selection these were the outfits that they are wearing a special breakdown is an order

(for this section I'll be referring to them by their living doll and normal names they're living doll names will be highlighted in their respective color. I'm also going on based off what I'm seeing in this photo so apologies if I get a few things wrong or miss something)

Louise / Lou

As you can clearly see before entering the house Lou had a much different outfit and completely different personality

There seems to be a layer under her dress

Then there's the yellow main dress

Yellow shoes

A bow like headband

The middle of the bow seems to have something puffy in it

Patrick/ Ricky

Despite the clothes looking pretty simple Ricky makes it clear that these clothes that he was wearing were of high class (must have cost a lot of money)

An undershirt

His green vest like coat

Brown shorts

Darker brown shoes

John / Shaun

Still a bit confused on how they managed to get master John's outfit from this but here we are Shaun's outfit is the exact opposite of John

A simple white shirt

Blue overalls

Blue pants

Brown shoes

No glasses (important for later)

Shirley / Rum

Definitely a cute outfit you can see more similarities with this Rum's than the others

Lavender top dress

A gray like underskirt

Light purple shoes

Two light purple berets

A gray bow close to the left pocket

A lavender bow (important for later)

Kate / Emilico

By far this is one of the more fancier outfits if not the biggest difference in both color and design

Long pink dress

Short pink top coat

Pink cap in her hands

Two pink hair ties

Pink shoes

This is where the shadow house got the ideas for the future shadows outfits from these outfits the kids wore during the selection look at all the similarities between the color choices and the position of hair accessories for example the girls flower choices heck even the design of the outfit themselves could have been influenced by this

For example both Rum and Shirley wear short lavender based dresses while Louise and Lou both wear long yellow dresses with cute yellow hair accessories, compare that to Patrick who looks like he's wearing a green flock like coat to Ricky's outfit where he looks like he's wearing a sweater vest and seriously John and Shaun how do we go from overalls to a fancy coat

The most obvious differences being Kate and Emilco but I'm not going to explain that spoiler just yet, besides the colors being obviously different the length of the dresses are different too and Kate doesn't have a cap like a Emilico did

Fun facts

The lavender bow on Mistress Shirley's finger actually belonged to Rum before she entered the house, when she entered instead of it being replaced like Lou's bow like headband it was just transferred over to Mistress Shirley and she received a darker colored version of rummy's bow

The reason why Shaun isn't seen wearing his glasses throughout the show and manga is because during the selection he chose not to wear them in order to have a higher chance of being picked which is why Master John doesn't need glasses

Ricky's hair wasn't always swooped back it actually used to cover one of his eyes as bangs that were more skewed to one side of his face but in order to look more professional he slicked it back thanks to his sister

It confused me why they replaced Lou's accessory until I looked closer, it's not a simple bow like Rum's it's actually a bow connected to a headband and while headbands do exist in the shadows house evident by Maggie and Margaret once like hers probably don't exist so they compromised by making it a bit more simple

Isn't it a bit interesting that despite the colors in Shadow's house being all over the rainbow they purposely gave Emilico a pink dress while they gave Kate a red dress (potential for a future post)
