Thank you for the nice words! So, it has been a while since I wrote my fave siblings post. Here are some new siblings' relationships I love!

Ruby and Yang (RWBY)

Their dynamic has grown on me! Yang and Ruby are sisters, who could never be "just sisters" because of Summer's disappearence.

Yang feels she has to be Ruby's stand-in mom, jump in to protect her and always be emotionally available:

Dream of anything; I'll make it all come true. Everything you need Is all I have for you. I'm forever Always by your side. Whenever you need a friend, Never far behind.

She has to be strong like Summer.

Ruby feels she has to be Yang's hope, to be a perfect Huntress and to always be optimistic:

Past Ruby: That’s right! It’s up to you to make things better, isn’t it? Everything all depends on you! Your sister needs you, your friends need you, the whole world needs you to keep fighting, forever and ever, against an invincible monster that took your mother!

She has to be perfect like Summer.

Basically, they are both trying to be like their mother to the other, even if in different ways:

The petals scatter now Every nightmare just discloses It's your blood that's red like roses And no matter what I do Nothing ever takes the place of you

So, their shared arc is about moving on from this internalized mentality, so that they can become two independent people who still love each other.

Ame and Yuki (Wolf Children)

I love their siblings yin yang dynamic! Yuki and Amer are very well characterized and have wonderful complementary arcs. They have to choose if to be wolves or humans and of course they come up with different answers.

The best part, though, is that their respective developments lead them to take a path very different from the one you would expect initially.

At the beginning Yuki is energetic and enjoys spending time in her wolf form, while Ame is shy and dislikes moving around. Still, they both find something they wish so much they are willing to change for it.

Yuki craves human companionship and someone who would accept her for who she is. Ame is fascinated by nature and wants someone who would teach him about it. In the end, Yuki chooses society, while Ame the forest. It is this difference, which also leads to their final fight. There they both try to force the other to see things from their perspective. They want the other to make their same choice. Still, this is impossible because they are not the same. They take different paths and separate because this is the only way they can truly be happy. This doesn't mean they love each other or their mother any less.

The Russos siblings! (Wizards of Waverly Place)

Tbh... they are some of my favourite siblings EVER! And it is a crime I forgot to put them into the list :P Well, time to fix this mistake!

I love Wizards of Waverly Place and that is mostly because of the dynamics among the three siblings (+ Harper, who is a found sister to ALL the Russo kids and not just Alex). In particular, the crux of the series is really Alex and Justin's bond, which is great and my favourite relationship in the story.

Alex is impulsive, a delinquent and an underachiever. Justin is lawful, a star student and a hardworker. Alex is heart, while Justin is mind. They bicker all the time and never get along and yet they love each other and need the other to get their respective happy endings.

Alex learns magic from Justin and grows more responsible and hardworking by observing him. Justin mentors Alex and through her he discovers his true calling, which is to be a teacher. With time, we see this dynamic changing as Justin starts to mess up more and Alex is the one helping out. This is all part of growing up and discovering who you are.

Alex grows smarter, but keeps being motivated by her emotions and big heart (she puts in the effort for the competition, so that she can stay with Mason - an inversion of her Jerry giving up magic for Theresa)

Justin must deal with his hidden feelings. He must face his darkest side, like his jealousy, his pettyness and even how his deep love for someone can lead him astray. He has to accept all this if he wants to keep choosing the right thing

So, Alex realizes she can be more than just Justin's bad little sister and Justin has to face he can't keep building his own identity on being the smart one of his family. That is because all 3 siblings are smart (yes even Max), but go at it in different ways and have different talents.

Throughout the series, their final callings become clear. Alex's is wizardry, Justin's is teaching and Max's is business. All three get what they need and want.

As a cherry on top, Alex and Justin's arcs are foils and inversion of each other at any important step ;)

They have 3 important love interests that follow specific literary themes (Beauty and Beast for Alex and Romeo and Juliet for Justin). They have to learn when to let go and when to fight for the person they love, just in different ways and at different times.

They both fall behind in the wizard competition because they are trying to help people and they both get back in through the other.

In short, Alex and Justin are very well made siblings yin yang (yes by looking at this least you get it... I have a type). To this, you add some very funny sibling rivarly, clever burns and pettiness between them and Max and you get some of my favourite siblings.

So this is almost certainly going to be an unpopular opinion for some, but for a long time now I’ve been feeling that the RWBY fandom puts just a bit TOO much stock in the various fairytale/mythology/literary allusions of the characters when it comes to theory-crafting. It feels like people find out that a certain character A is an allusion to another character B from an already completed story and go ‘Well that must mean that Character A is going to turn out just like Character B!’

Which of course completely ignores that these are allusions and references. Ruby Rose might have strong parallels and similarities to Little Red Riding Hood, but that does not mean she IS literally Little Red Riding Hood. Just as Weiss Schnee is NOT literally Snow White, Penny Polendina is NOT literally Pinocchio and Oscar Pine is NOT literally the Little Prince. Ultimately, whatever allusion a character might have comes SECOND to who they are as an actual character, NOT the other way around.

Whatever allusions a character has might inform what could happen to them, but that should still be treated as secondary to what we actually see them do in the show.

For example, I see a LOT of ships in the RWBY fandom that people seem to largely use interpretations of the characters’ allusions as ‘evidence’, rather than what the characters actually DO in the actual SHOW. Like has anyone noticed that discussions of ships like Bumbleby, Renora, Nuts and Dolts or White Rose have historically not involved much interpretation (relatively speaking anyway) of the potential ‘complimentary allusions’ of these characters? Because there is no NEED to, because all the evidence for these ships is right fucking there on the screen. Meanwhile we’ve got ships (and I am NOT naming names) that people will swear up and down are TOTALLY going to be canon for really-realsies where most or even all of the ‘evidence’ consists of people effectively playing some kind of matching game with their allusions. Or saying nothing more than ‘Character A kinda-sorta resembles the love-interest of Character B’s allusion’.

And ALL of this doesn’t even take into account the biggest factor which I keep getting the impression that WAY too many RWBY fans still having gotten the memo on:

The fact that RWBY literally NEVER plays its allusions STRAIGHT.

All the way from minute one when we saw an allusion to Little Red Riding Hood cutting down a horde of Big Bad Wolves, RWBY has ALWAYS been subverting, inverting, flipping, twisting and otherwise playing it’s allusions, references and archetypes literally ANY way but actually STRAIGHT.

Little Red Riding Hood hunts the Big Bad Wolf. Snow White is equal parts Princess AND Knight in Shining Armor. Cinderella is a tragic villain origin story. Pinocchio was always a real girl. The Great and Powerful Wizard Oz is far more powerful than anyone thought, but is ALSO far more of a fraud than anyone thought.

So when people use these characters’ allusions as some kind of rigid road-map to theorize what might happen to them, it’s not just that this detracts from their identity as their own characters; the story itself isn’t even using that map!

I mean speaking personally, that’s what has always made RWBY theory-crafting FUN. Trying to guess how the writers might twist and flip the allusions they’re using. But that also means that the allusions of the various characters simply DON’T actually provide ANY kind of accurate ‘road-map’ for where they might be going. Instead, the best we can do is use what the actual show has actually shown us to get any kind of idea where the characters are headed.

Ultimately, I feel like too often I see that when people are making theories about RWBY characters, they are treating them more like the characters they are based on, instead of the characters they actually ARE.

She's a red/big bad wolf combo, she's bi, she gets tragically underused like so many OUaT characters

She’s a werewolf :)

We first see her as Ruby in Storybrooke where she's initially depicted as a fun-loving flirt who spends her nights most likely in a bar while wearing revealing clothes that her grandma disapproves of (and is all in red. Absolutely everything). She lives with her grandma who runs a diner and that's where Ruby works. When Emma wakes up the sleeping town, she tries to leave Granny's and ends up helping in a case that Emma's working on by following her nose. That episode also has her backstory, but when we first see her as Red in the Enchanted Forest, she's confident and helpful and not afraid to use her lycanthropy. But the start of her story has her being an innocent young woman with a love for discovering the world and her boyfriend Peter (of Peter and the Wolf, I guess). She meets Snow while still living with her Granny in her cabin in the woods and takes her in. She's so hopeful - and then she turns into a werewolf and kills Peter (after they all thought he was the werewolf and had chained him to a tree). She is obviously quite traumatized by this and takes off with Snow. But that and her subsequent adventures gives her the growth she needs to be comfortable in her own skin, whether human or wolf. And, when the curse breaks completely, you can see the change in her - she would absolutely walk through fire to help Snow and the other good guys.

Another version where Red Riding Hood also ends up being the Big Bad Wolf. She eats her boyfriend which is sad but she falls in love with Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in like Season 5. Her red cloak is what keeps her in human form which I think is neat. When all the storybook characters are transported to the modern world, she runs a diner with Granny.

She's one of my favorite characters from Once Upon a Time. She's a cool Red Riding hood wolf girl who is bi and has seen like 3 of her love interests and her mother die. She slays very hard so I nominate her. (Also I used to have a crush on her as a kid)

Ruby Rose:

She has a scythe that is also a high-impact sniper rifle.

She is literally just based on Red Riding Hood and she's such an amazing character holy heck

Red Riding Hood but with a gun. (Specifically a combination scythe/high-impact sniper rifle called Crescent Rose). Also she's gone through so much she deserves it. She's trying to save the world and keep going despite all the people she's lost. Grew up dreaming of being a hero who fights monsters. She knows life isn't a fairy tale and wants to make it better. Just went through a mental health arc where she had depression from trying to live up to her (presumed dead) mom and from her friend dying for the second time. Killed the Big Bad Wolf with her magic eye powers. Her sister is Goldilocks and her friends are Beauty and Snow White. also I love her <3

She’s the little red riding hood but also a powerful fighter with a massive fucking scythe that is also a sniper rifle and she’s so skrunkly and so gender. Also RWBY’s whole thing (well one of them) is that their characters are all inspired by pre-existing ones from older stories and Ruby’s the main character so like, poster child of ‘character based off [insert relevant fairytale here]’ so I think she deserves to at least get pretty far

Aesthetics, themes, meta, personality and raw coolness.

She is the main character of her show. The most common monster they fight is a type of wolf (its been a while since ive seen it). Her job is to hunt them down before they can eat her. this story is very much about failed fairy tales, many of the side character's inspired arcs end in failure, but (having not seen the most recent bits) Ruby is still going strong, and i really like her cape, rose petals, and use of a scythe.

She is THE RRH character of all time. She has a scythe that's also a gun and she has to be the hero because she's got super rare main character powers. She is my happy girl. Also her mom was Sleeping Beauty and her sister is Goldilocks, and she fights to stop Rapunzel from destroying everything on the world, the gods, and then herself.

How exactly does intertextuality work?

I'm trying to improve my media literacy, but I'm not that great at understanding certain terms.

intertextuality is a REALLY broad term. in the most basic sense it refers to the relation between one text and another and how that relationship informs the meaning of the text being examined. think about parodies: the humor is referential, either to a specific work being parodied or to conventions of a genre, and relies on the audience having familiarity with the parodied text. a great parody should be able to stand on its own merits as a story, but knowing the parodied text(s) enriches the parody because you’re in on the jokes. that’s intertextuality in a nutshell.

as a writer, there are myriad ways to do this: direct parody or pastiche, quotation, allusion, translation, so forth. and as a reader, intertextuality needn’t necessarily be an argument for authorial intention—you can (and indeed should, if you’re interested in textual analysis, because it’s a good exercise) apply intertextual analysis to a text by comparison or contrast against another text in which you find resonant ideas or themes or patterns, and build an argument about the text you’re reading using reference to that other text, regardless of whether the author intended it that way. the author is dead: the point of textual analysis is not to divine the One True Meaning intended by god.

(that said, steer clear of joseph campbell and monomythic analysis; it’s notionally similar to an intertextual approach, but the underlying thesis that all stories, or at least all stories of mythic scope, are variants of a sort of pancultural ur-story, is ethnocentric garbage that incentivizes deliberate misinterpretation in a when-all-you-have-is-a-hammer way. intertextual analysis encompasses both similarity and difference because both are meaningful.)

rwby, for example, makes very deliberate use of intertextuality—in the character allusions and also in its weaving together of a few key texts (marvelous land of oz, petrosinella/persinette/rapunzel, the little prince, and cinderella) into the backbone of its original narrative. a lot of the fandom tries to rely on the character allusions to guess what will happen in the plot, with generally poor accuracy, because that’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what rwby uses intertextuality for. 

its purpose in rwby—in rwby, this is a common use of intertextuality but not a universal one!—is to develop a symbolic and thematic vocabulary that enhances and clarifies what the story is trying to say. what does it mean, for example, that ruby is red riding hood? well, little red disobeys her mother and endangers herself and her grandmother. she’s also gobbled up by a wolf and survives unscathed with the aid of a huntsman. her grandmother, too, is eaten and at least metaphorically revived. the wolf is undone by his own hunger. it’s a story about childish rebellion and dire consequence, but also a mistake ultimately bringing about the end of the danger little red was warned against. and it is, symbolically, a story about death and resurrection. the wolf eats the girl and the girl is reborn from the wolf’s stomach: thus children become adults. and then in v9 we have ruby straying from her path, drinking the tea, facing the wolf, returning to life whole and unchanged. see how it rhymes?

that holds true for the narrative allusions as well. the marvelous land of oz, boiled down to essentials, is about restoring  balance to a world upset by the hand of unworthy ‘gods’ (the wizard, whose machinations are maintained by his co-conspirator mombi alone after his departure from oz); the conflict is principally between deceptive illusions and ruthless honesty. 

likewise the maiden-in-the-tower tales all twine around the central conceit of an imprisoned young woman who is both rescued and rescuer: petrosinella outwits and slays her captor to win herself and her lover free, and both persinette and rapunzel suffer in exile until their voices guide their lovers home and they heal their lovers’ blindness with their tears. 

the little prince is about growing up and what it means to be alive not just in body but in soul—and like red riding hood, it uses the symbolic motif of death and resurrection to explore these ideas—and one of its core themes is that uncertainty and fear and acceptance of reality, of death, of danger as unavoidable, are necessary to truly live. 

and cinderella is a story about cruelty and injustice and having the courage to do what it takes to survive, and also—inherent to the course of the fairytale narrative—a story about the obligation for those on the outside to help in the ways that they can. cinderella saves herself by asking for help. rwby doesn’t turn this story upside-down, exactly: both cinder and salem ask for help, and suffer brutal retaliation for it. how does cinderella save herself alone?

and so on. rwby handles intertextuality very well, so there’s a lot to tease out and a lot of threads to pull. it is that deep. but this is how intertextual analysis works, in the essentials. you connect one text to another and use the second to examine the first: why is ruby little red riding hood? what’s the common thread weaving the marvelous land of oz, the maiden-in-the-tower tales, the little prince, and cinderella together into the story rwby tells? the wolf eats red riding hood and red riding hood is reborn from the wolf and petrosinella’s ogre is eaten by petrosinella’s wolf: what does the wolf mean in rwby, and how does that color the parallelism between ruby and salem? it’s like if subtext had a megaphone.

Cinderella murdered her evil stepmother and stepsisters because Prince Charming was more interested in "not shaking the boat" than actually doing something to remove her from the situation.

Also, the Fairy Godmother is a SECOND wicked stepmother and also the Wicked Witch of the West and also Rapunzel.

I really enjoy how RWBY handles his Allusion of Fairy Tales

Ironwood is the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, who in the original story was looking for a heart but realizes he already had one

On the flipside,James ended up losing that heart the moment he tried to control the situation to justify his ends

Ruby Rose is little red riding hood, in the original story Little Red was young naive girl who was tricked & devoured by the wolf until the huntsman came to save her

On the flipside Ruby is a Scythe wielding Huntress who's aware of the dangers the world has to offer and won't back down

Belle (Beauty and the Beast)

Blake retains Belle's Introverted Personality and Love for books

But also retains some of the Beast's traits

Hello! It may be a bit early, but I've been really enjoying the Red Riding Hood story we've been seeing throughout volume 9. Outside we've got Weiss, Yang, and Blake all trying to protect Ruby from the Big Bad Wolf, the Curious Cat. (this works well with the idea you've had of Weiss as her hunter too, if I recall correctly!)

But I'm wondering how you think that Summer might fit into this? Of course we've got the idea that she's the hunter/woodsman as well - she's literally the Huntress that Ruby's been idolizing her whole life. But as I'm seeing it for now, she's also a wolf that's been holding Ruby back emotionally and physically. Ruby can't move on because she stuck in her mother's shadow (perhaps like Red Riding Hood was stuck in the belly of the wolf?) But now Ruby is taking her mother's weapon (an ax) and getting something out of whatever the Tree will provide her with, be that an answer about Summer's fate or something else. Ruby will come out of the wooden cocoon and be a different form of her without the weight of Summer's legacy (at least, that's what I'm thinking so far), perhaps by using the Woodsman/Hunter's ax to get herself out. So perhaps Ruby could be her own hunter too, breaking herself out of the wolf of her mother.

If you have a different thought, I'd love to hear it! Your takes are always so interesting.

In general, I would say RWBY's allusions are not limited to specific instances, but rather they comment a character arc from beginning to end (in a metaphorical way of course!).

All of this to say, this volume is Ruby's story, so of course it is a version of LRRH. Still, Ruby's arc is not limited to this volume alone, so this isn't the only version of LRRH we are getting.

Again, I would need to reread Ruby's story as a whole to pick on different references, but as for now... I would say the LRRH's allusion comes out rather strongly in volume 6 and volume 9 (2 volumes, which are clearly meant to be foiled):

Volume 6 centers around the figure of the Grandmother (Maria) and the motif of the eyes

Volume 7 centers around the figure of the Wolf (CC) and the theme of the shadow

(Also it is interesting the LRRH allusion always starts with a detour:

Volume 6 - team RWBY + Oscar and Qrow leave the tracks and take a detour both physically and thematically in how they leave Oz's pre-established path. The final episode is even called "Our Way".

Volume 9 - team RWBY + Jaune and Neo leave the yellow brick-road of the Wizard of Oz and fall into Wonderland. They take an even deeper and larger detour as volume 9 is literally its own story and the main plot is paused)

I am pretty sure that if one were to analyze these 2 volumes deeply enough, more references would come out... and if one were to analyze Ruby's arc well enough, one would realize it follows her fairy tale to a T.

All of this to say, I think Summer's role would be multifaceted and complex and fit different characters of the fairy tale in different ways.

In general, I think Summer is the key character of Ruby's arc, which means she is probably gonna play all the different characters of her fairy tale. This is because right now for Ruby Summer is everything.

It is a common path in RWBY really. For example, Blake starts with Adam being all the characters and motifs in her fairy-tale: he was the rose, the beast in Blake's personal life and the beast in Blake's struggle for the Faunus rights. Blake's growth stems from her finding new people who better fit her fairy-tale:

Ruby is the Rose, who inspires her

Weiss is the Beauty for Blake's Faunus Right fight

Yang is the Beauty in Blake's personal life

Ilia and Sun are 2 other beasts, who support Blake's Beauty's journey

Now, I think something similar is gonna happen with Summer. She is so central to Ruby as a person, she has kind of taken over her whole narrative:

She is first and foremost the Mother - the one who points the right path to LRRH and the one LRRH has to leave in order to enter the Woods (to grow up).

Summer leaves Ruby and this kickstarts Ruby's story. This kickstarts Ruby's journey to catch up to her. She follows the path Summer taught her (indirectly). To be a Huntress and to help people. And yet, at one point Ruby will have to take a detour in order to discover who she is.

After wondering in the Woods and meeting many dangers and characters, LRRH arrives to the Grandma's house. Now, the Grandma in the story is just another way to call the Mother, aka a more mature feminine presence. And yet, when LRRH arrives, she discovers the Grandma is not really who she remembers. I think something similar may happen with Ruby and Summer. Ruby will have to face the person behind the ideal. In this sense, Summer will be a Wolf.

Summer is also the Huntress, in how, as you said, she has inspired Ruby to grow into a Huntress herself. I don't know if this means Summer will save Ruby. She may in a final moment of glory, but the point as for now is that Ruby needs to become her own Huntress, rather than a copy of Summer.

Just like Blake, it is possible Ruby will need to find other people, who fit the roles better and she has:

Yang took the place of the Mother

Blake takes the place of the Wolf and showed Ruby a wolf can change, so a lost person can be found again

Weiss will probably show Ruby a child can become a Huntress, which is what Ruby herself needs to do

This also fits with Summer having literally all of the girls' colors:

This is because she is probably a combination of all of them, an ideal.

On a final note, I see Ruby like this:

LRRH > the ego

The Wolf > Ruby's inner darkness and trauma

The Hunter > Ruby's super-ego aka her purpose

Summer might turn out to be:

The Mother > the ego

The Wolf > the shadow/her inner darkness

The Hunter > the super-ego > Summer's purpose

Ruby's problem is that she was living as a super-ego, so this volume challenges her to face her inner wolf (her shadow), so that she can come out as a more balanced ego.

Summer seems to have been living as the super-ego, as well. Maybe even moreso than Ruby, so I wonder what happened to her when the Wolf took over.

In short, I think Ruby the Huntress might meet Summer the Wolf in the future and they could have a reconciliation only if they meet as their egos: as Mother and Daughter.

That said, we'll see! I am very excited about Summer!

EDIT - I realized I might not have made it clear. But I actually really like your idea fo Summer metaphorically saving Ruby this volume (even if my preference is toward Penny). I was trying to just wide the perspective a little to encapsulate not just this volume, but the story as a whole!

It's really not that arbitrary, it's only arbitrary insofar as how much they want to tap into, which is frustrating - but in terms of actual motivation it's rather straightforward if you've got a thematic roadmap.

So what I keep saying is that it's beholden to the reality that fairytales are real and fairytales are broken and need fixing with a new approach. Salem was denied her happy ending and I really don't think that's actually meant to be punitive, we are supposed to sympathise with her. If you're supposed to sympathise with the baddie and start thinking about the other side then that tells you how a lot of the allusions are used. That's why Ruby's Big Bad Wolves are humans who are cursed to be Grimm monsters, whom she can use her silver eyes on to protect life.

The Hound, potentially Summer Rose... Cinder Fall, maybe even Salem? Red Riding Hood is clearly related to the big bads and even her own mother in the story so yes, I think that there is work it's doing in the story. You're just not killing these wolves, the wolf wearing the grandmother's skin is really a human wearing wolfskin. That type of reversal happened with say Ozma, who is the wizard who really does have magic beyond the accepted magic of that world, but he's a liar in a different way.

Of course you do get the element that Ruby is a Huntress who fights Grimm (aka fear and despair) but that's the basic foundation and conceit of her very first trailer, so this is also where the allusions do evolve a bit. But once you introduce her silver eyes it forces you to read her story a bit differently.

Banking on allusions is a gamble and sometimes they're only obvious in retrospect - or less obvious because people, say, focus only on Pinnochio with Penny as opposed to looking at something like the Russian fairytale of the Snow Maiden who melts after she loves for the first time (and is literally snow who becomes a real girl). Winter is another interesting case because she's the Snow Queen who is forced to cry to remove the shard of ice from her eye. How much is or isn't true is a gamble but a common element of all of the allusion employment is a humanising element of the fairytales being, you know, real, and running around everywhere in the story, which changes how you read them, because it's not ticking boxes for the sake of ticking boxes which is how they tend to get characterised.

So how you read the allusions matters how you read R/WBY's themes altogether. I don't think it's a checklist, only really what's relevant to their story is employed. It's weakened by instances such as Neo or Watts who really don't have much more to them, but I do wonder if more intense allusions = more narrative importance is something being played with here. Sorry Neo fans. This would be why something as recognisable and essential as Red Riding Hood is the main character.

tl;dr Not 'mirroring' precisely but it is relevant and it's beholden to R/WBY's themes, it's not arbitrary, and a lot of the big bads or people who need help are Big Bad Wolves, humans in wolfskin for Ruby to use her eyes on.

Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:

Make at least two in-character posts during a calendar month (for instance, if the activity check is for May, have two in-character posts between the 1st and 31st of May).

Only one meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.

Only one drabble of 500+ words counts as activity.

One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
