Well as you can imagine, the David Jenkins IG is the big news of today. The clowning forecast has gone up significantly. Dad posted one of the late-blooming SaveOFMD banners in NY and attached Elton John - Candle In The Wind to the post. This song has some very specific significance to our fandom.

Now ADD to that... David Jenkins ALSO added this picture of Matthew Maher standing in front of a saveOFMD flyer found out on the street.

NOW OF COURSE, we are all clowning, but I think as usual Chaos Dad is trying to give us info without giving us info since the fandom pays so much attention to every little detail.

== Love Notes ==

Alrighty lovelies. It's been another busy day. Lots of clowning, lots of hope, lots of emotional roller coasters. I hope you had a good time and generally it was more positive than negative. I have a lot I want to say, but my brain is still pretty foggy. So I'll make this short.

Sometimes when things go well, our brain gets excited and then they overcompensate when we calm down. It starts to think a lot more negatively because it had so much extra dopamine for a time. When that happens, little things can be really devastating. I just want you to remember that we all make mistakes and YOU, you beautiful imperfect being are not your mistakes. They hurt, and we learn from them, but they don't define us. Try not to listen to your brain if it's telling you otherwise. You are so very wonderful.

Anyway, I hope that makes sense.

Here's a picture I found today I thought really applied to all you wonderful people. Thank you to all the folks who reached out to me and checked in and sent me love when you knew I was struggling (there are too many to list and I don't know if you want to be tagged so please just know how much I appreciate you). I love you all so much, and I'm so lucky to how found people who make me feel like it's ok to be me.

The maritime museum of san diego has the San Salvador, a replica of a 16th century spanish galleon and its 100% sea worthy they sail it regularly.

Wait really??! 😭😭😭 I don��t think they had it there when I visited (like 6 years ago) I know what I’ll be doing after the hurricane leaves 😂

Star of India

The Star of India is the world’s oldest active ship, built in 1863 in the Isle of Man. Now-a-days, it resides in a maritime history museum in San Diego. Like many ships, the Star of India has had her share of misfortunes. Ghosts of several unfortunate sailors and passengers still haunt the decks and cabins.

In 1884 a young stowaway by the name of John Campbell was discovered on the Star of India. Instead of throwing him overboard, they put him to work on the ship. One day, Campbell lost his footing high in the rigging and fell 100 feet to the deck, crushing both of his legs. Three days later, he died in agony and was buried at sea.

His ghost is said to haunt the ship and visitors sometimes report feeling a cold hand touching them whenever they are near the mast where Campbell fell. Sometimes the smell of fresh baked bread seems to come from the ship’s galley, though the stove has been cold for many years. Even when the ship sits still in the water, pots and pans above the stove have been seen to move.

There is a chain locker located toward the bow of the ship. The heavy anchor chain goes below the deck into a dark storage area. Once there was a Chinese crewman who was in the locker when he shouldn’t have been. The other sailors were preparing to start a sea voyage and were pushing raising the anchor and stowing the anchor chain. They didn’t know that their crewmate was in the chain locker below.

As the noisy machinery fed the iron anchor chain into the locker below, it trapped the helpless man and slowly crushed him to death. He was screaming for help, but his crewmates couldn’t hear him above the noise of the machinery. His ghost still haunts the chain locker where he died and people who go there report feeling a cold spot inside.

The crew’s quarters was the scene of many deaths. Crewman taken below after horrible accidents or stricken by illness spent their last days here. In these tight spaces you can feel the cold and sense the fear that still haunts the ship.

LAST SHIP STILL SAILING WHICH ONCE FLEW THE KINGDOM OF HAWAI`I FLAG

Considered the world’s oldest active sailing ship, the 160 year old Star of India has been a fixture of the waterfront at the Maritime Museum in San Diego, CA for decades, drawing out hundreds every year to visit the historic vessel.

Built in the Isle of Man’s Ramsey Shipyard in 1863, the Star of India was originally named Euterpe. After eight years, it was sold to the London shipping company Shaw, Savill & Albion Line to transport emigrants to Aotearoa (New Zealand.) It racked up 21 circumnavigations before it was sold to the Kingdom of Hawai`i.  In 1898, the ship was reregistered to the US and renamed Star of India. Today, the Star of India is the last ship still sailing which once flew the flag of the Kingdom of Hawai`i. To honor the Hōkūle`a’s current visit to San Diego, the Star of India raised her sails once again for the first time in five years and sailed off of San Diego joining the Hōkūle`a as it arrived, flying the very same Kingdom of Hawai`i flag.

The Dole Race (1927): Charles Lindbergh had just flown across the Atlantic in a small plane, so pineapple magnate James Dole offered a prize of $25,000 (over $400,000 today) to the first plane to make it from the Bay Area to Honolulu, and $10,000 (over $170,000 today) to the second place winner. Unfortunately, this race did not end the way Dole imagined, and 10 lives were lost. Learn more from the Museum of the City of San Francisco.

The above image, from our online catalog, is a chart showing maritime flags and Morse code to be flown/displayed from vessels bound to and from the Hawaiian Islands at approach of airplane. Indicated distance was from San Francisco. At bottom: "F. Flynn, Secretary, San Francisco Flight Committee by Capt. W.B. Voortmeyer." Captions below and above the chart describe the race details and the deaths of Lieut. George Covell and Richard Waggener on August 10, 1927, en route from San Diego to Oakland to join the race.

Hey all — meant to be more active here, but I’ve found the prospect of rebuilding a presence from scratch to be rather daunting/require time I just don’t have at the moment. But! Five weeks ago, I started training as prospective sail crew on the Star of India (right behind me there) at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Tomorrow morning I take my basic seamanship qualification test. Wish me luck!
