MARK SAVITT:
Graham Techler’s THE PANIC OF ’29 is a sprawling epic in three parts.
The first part takes place in 1929 when London’s stock market crashed and the crash of the New York stock market seemed imminent. Vice President Richard Whitney (Brian Morabito) of the exchange tries to get people to believe that all will be well, but his secretary Dot (Olivia Puckett) and associates Granton
(Jared Loftin) and Oswald (PJ Adzima) knows otherwise. Eva (Joelle Nicole Johnson), the owner of a cabaret, expects to profit from excessive drinking after the crash. Her sister Ingrid
(Jail Cheeks-Lomax) who works with her wants to work at a movie theater. The club's singer, Lady Generosity (Julia Knitel) is involved with a poetic police officer, Kent (Will Turner). Jimmy Armstrong (Will Roland), who is keen on Dot, writes crime stories for a pulp magazine.
The second section takes place in 1933 during the Depression. Eva, Ingrid, Dot, Lady Generosity, and Jimmy are now among the poor living in shacks. A mysterious figure Tommy-gun Tommie is killing off many members of the police force.
The final section takes place in 1941 before America’s entry in WWII. Dot, Jimmy, Lady, and Eva are now operating a lodge near Niagara Falls. They are not concerned with profit and allow a guitar playing drifter to stay in exchange for some songs. An incestuous trio of fur hat wearing French orphans (Rachel B. Joyce,
PJ Adzima, Jared Loftin) also find their way to the lodge. They are shady characters with dubious intent. They are also the funniest part of the play, and I loved every moment they were on stage. A figure from the past presumed dead reappears.
Things move quickly in this tale and characters other than the principals drop like flies. The writing is both hard-boiled and filled with puns and alliteration. It was very amusing.
Nothing makes much sense, but the performers carry it off with elan. The songs performed by Lady and the drifter are a great added bonus.
I was surprised that this was not a serious examination of the ’29 crash, but once I realized that it was going to be very different, I was more than willing to accept the show on its own terms.

When Mark and I agree about a play and one of the main characters is Eva, you know you are for a helluva treat!
Not only was the play pure nonsensical fringe-like pleasure, but the acting was perfect to boot.
Jared Loftin, PJ Adzima, Jail Cheeks-Lomax, Rachel B. Joyce, and Will Turner appeared in multiple roles that were so different that I hardly recognized them as the same actors. You know they were having a blast doing this play as much as we were watching their antics.
Meanwhile Brian Morabito, Olivia Puckett, Julia Knitel, Will Roland, and Joelle Nicole Johnson played true to their characters no matter what unlikely positions they found themselves in.
Do not panic that you only have till the 20th to see this but rush on down now. You don’t want to miss this delightfully droll play.

Hi! I just got my acceptance letter from Villanova today to attend their Classics graduate program in the fall! Do you have any advice?
Hi, there! I apologize for not seeing this earlier!
All of the professors there are wonderful; I took most of my courses with Dr. DeNardis, Dr. Melanie Subacus, and Dr. Andrew Scott. I also had courses with Dr. Alissa Vaillancourt and Dr. Sarah Wahlberg.
The downside is there are usually limited choices of the courses for Fall and Spring, and they’re on a rotating basis. However, they do ask you at the end of each term what kind of courses you would like to see. Many of us requested a Gender & Sexuality course, which I got to take as a culture course. Which pathway are you choosing? The tracks VU has are Greek/Latin, Latin, and Classical Culture. I did the Culture track while I was there.
When I attended, I took the following courses:
Pompeii & Herculaneum (Culture)
History of Latin Literature (required, Latin)
Ancient Historiography (Culture)
Roman Elegy (Latin)
Roman Drama (Latin)
Gender & Sexuality of Ancient Greece & Rome (Culture)
Proseminar: Lucretius (Latin)
History of Greek Literature (required, Greek)
From Republic to Principate (Culture)
Plato (Greek)
Usually, between the 10 courses, you have four Latin, four Culture, and two Greek. History of Latin Literature and History of Greek Literature are required, but everything else is an elective. I put their designations according to the program next to them, but if you take it as a Culture track student, everything is in translation (you can opt to do the Latin and Greek comprehensive examinations as well if you want to do that, but again double-check with Dr. DeNardis about this!)
Some advice for newer people going to Villanova: there’s not a thesis requirement because you make a portfolio with the final papers from History of Greek Literature, History of Latin Literature, and a course of your choosing. There are comprehensive examinations (make sure you find the reading list early to work on notes/studying before you get to the final semester! I found it late and was really overwhelmed. It should be in the general folder for your program.) BUT if you want to write a thesis (if you want to go for your PhD, I’d suggest inquiring about it because a lot of my writing samples from VU were too short of using), I’d ask Dr. DeNardis about the possibility of writing a thesis. Even if you’re not certain about what you’d like to write, she’s very good about guiding people and letting them talk through things.
I did my entire degree as a distance student, so I can’t speak to how the campus was helpful, but as a distance student, you can request library books from Falvey for free, and they will send you a return slip that’s pre-paid for you to return the books. Also, request a student card from Villanova even if you’re a distance student! I did that because the local university where I lived would let us use our own university card to get into their library. There are a lot of good online resources both through the university library and in general. If you’re a distance student and can go to your local university library or access their collections, make sure to ask for a guest login, and you can use their digital collections.
Villanova also has optional modern language exams. Again, you don’t have to do these, but if you want to do a PhD, it might be a good idea to do at least one. They offer French, Italian, and German tests. You can do one, two, and yes, I actually asked about this, all three if you really want to, but I would suggest if you do that, to request each modern exam at the beginning of a separate semester, so you’re not overwhelmed by more than one of them at a time.

DESCRIPTION
Innervision is an outstanding choreographic play for 60 interprets and 30 tables. Presented in the public space, this work depicts an intergenerational group composed of dancers of all ages. They interpret, in unison, a partition of micro gestures to give them a whole new resonance. With Innervision, an inclusive and convening project, the multidisciplinary artist Martin Messier proposes to give back their whole value to daily human gestures and to reveal their high level of poesy. cop
Thanks to a technology developed years ago by 14 lieux, the movements of this partition will be dictated to the interpreters by way of instructions directly transmitted to their ears thanks to a wireless communication system. This soundly sequence will act as a canvas for the play that interpreters will have to follow without learning the choreographic sentence. The wireless communication device used in Innervision will allow an optimal synchronization between the movements and the sounds and will create a game of association between the two. By superimposing sounds and movements, this soundly montage created by Martin Messier will amplify and magnify these gestures and make them resonate.
Minimalistic and stripped, this work will make a certain image of the burden of solitude resonate. Innervision opens up a dialogue between interiority and exteriority: the individual, what he carries inside him and the outside world with whom he interacts.

Dévoilement des lauréates de la 7e édition de Glambition Québec
Célébrer l’entrepreneuriat au féminin
ÉDUCATION. Pour une 7e édition, l’organisme Option-travail tenait son événement entrepreneurial annuel, Glambition Québec, le 10 janvier 2019 à la Faculté des sciences de l’administration (pavillon Palasis-Prince) de l’Université Laval.
Cet événement ayant pour but d’éveiller un intérêt pour l’entrepreneuriat auprès des jeunes filles du secondaire a cette année accueilli 19 mentores issues de différents milieux. Ces dernières ont pu mettre de l’avant leur parcours entrepreneurial pour conseiller les équipes présentes. Celles-ci ont participé à 4 ateliers interactifs offerts par des formatrices à la FSA pour développer et concrétiser un projet entrepreneurial.
La journée a commencé avec la conférence d’ouverture menée par les fondatrices Mélodie d’Amour et Vanessa Lajeunesse de la boutique de location de tenues La petite robe noire. Elles ont encouragé les participantes à poursuivre leurs rêves, tout en s’armant de patience et de persévérance. Elles ont partagé leur histoire afin d’inspirer les jeunes filles à avoir confiance en leurs qualités individuelles, car la complémentarité d’une équipe fait son succès. Le duo d’entrepreneures a bien donné le ton à l’événement en prônant que les femmes avaient leur place dans le monde des affaires, et qu’elles n’avaient qu’à la prendre.
En tout, 71 jeunes filles étudiant dans les établissements scolaires des secteurs de Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge et de L’Ancienne-Lorette, étaient présentes lors de cette journée pour développer l’idée d’un projet qu’elles souhaitaient réaliser durant l’année. Au total, 16 projets ont pu être présentés par un « pitch » d’une minute et demie devant les six membres du jury, en fin de journée.
Quatre bourses de 500$ devaient être offertes pour souligner différentes valeurs reconnues à travers les projets. Considérant la quantité et la qualité des projets soumis, une cinquième bourse a été ajoutée par les jurés représentants de leur Chaire à la FSA. Cinq équipes ont donc remporté un soutien afin de démarrer leur projet.

Édition mémorable
Cette 2e édition de l’événement désormais local, toutes les attentes ont été dépassées : le nombre de projets présentés a presque doublé depuis l’édition passée et les nombreuses mentores présentes ont su bien représenter les entrepreneures d’ici! De plus, Septembre éditeur, maison d’édition de Québec spécialisée dans la publication d’ouvrages-conseils et de référence sur la formation, s’est joint à l’événement à titre de nouveau partenaire afin d’ajouter un volet portant sur la connaissance de soi et sur l’orientation professionnelle.

Dévoilement des lauréates de la 7e édition de Glambition Québec
Célébrer l’entrepreneuriat au féminin
ÉDUCATION. Pour une 7e édition, l’organisme Option-travail tenait son événement entrepreneurial annuel, Glambition Québec, le 10 janvier 2019 à la Faculté des sciences de l’administration (pavillon Palasis-Prince) de l’Université Laval.
Cet événement ayant pour but d’éveiller un intérêt pour l’entrepreneuriat auprès des jeunes filles du secondaire a cette année accueilli 19 mentores issues de différents milieux. Ces dernières ont pu mettre de l’avant leur parcours entrepreneurial pour conseiller les équipes présentes. Celles-ci ont participé à 4 ateliers interactifs offerts par des formatrices à la FSA pour développer et concrétiser un projet entrepreneurial.
La journée a commencé avec la conférence d’ouverture menée par les fondatrices Mélodie d’Amour et Vanessa Lajeunesse de la boutique de location de tenues La petite robe noire. Elles ont encouragé les participantes à poursuivre leurs rêves, tout en s’armant de patience et de persévérance. Elles ont partagé leur histoire afin d’inspirer les jeunes filles à avoir confiance en leurs qualités individuelles, car la complémentarité d’une équipe fait son succès. Le duo d’entrepreneures a bien donné le ton à l’événement en prônant que les femmes avaient leur place dans le monde des affaires, et qu’elles n’avaient qu’à la prendre.
En tout, 71 jeunes filles étudiant dans les établissements scolaires des secteurs de Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge et de L’Ancienne-Lorette, étaient présentes lors de cette journée pour développer l’idée d’un projet qu’elles souhaitaient réaliser durant l’année. Au total, 16 projets ont pu être présentés par un « pitch » d’une minute et demie devant les six membres du jury, en fin de journée.
Quatre bourses de 500$ devaient être offertes pour souligner différentes valeurs reconnues à travers les projets. Considérant la quantité et la qualité des projets soumis, une cinquième bourse a été ajoutée par les jurés représentants de leur Chaire à la FSA. Cinq équipes ont donc remporté un soutien afin de démarrer leur projet.

Édition mémorable
Cette 2e édition de l’événement désormais local, toutes les attentes ont été dépassées : le nombre de projets présentés a presque doublé depuis l’édition passée et les nombreuses mentores présentes ont su bien représenter les entrepreneures d’ici! De plus, Septembre éditeur, maison d’édition de Québec spécialisée dans la publication d’ouvrages-conseils et de référence sur la formation, s’est joint à l’événement à titre de nouveau partenaire afin d’ajouter un volet portant sur la connaissance de soi et sur l’orientation professionnelle.
