Russia's highest-ranked women's tennis player, Daria Kasatkina, said in a video interview released Monday that she is dating a woman.

The French Open semifinalist's comments come as the Russian parliament discusses tightening already stringent restrictions on public discussions of LGBTQ relationships.

In the interview on YouTube with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko, Kasatkina said "yes" when asked if she has a girlfriend.

Kasatkina added that she believes that "living in the closet" would not be sustainable long-term. "There is no point, it would always be going round in your head, until you say something. Obviously, each person decides how to open up and how much," Kasatkina said.

Soon after the interview was released, Kasatkina posted a picture on Instagram of her embracing Olympic silver medalist figure skater Natalia Zabiiako with a heart emoji and called Zabiiako "my cutie pie'' in a Twitter post. Zabiiako, who won her Olympic medal with the Russian team in 2018, posted the same picture on Instagram, also with a heart.

Since 2013, Russian law has forbidden any discussion of LGBTQ relationships which is deemed to constitute "promotion of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors. That has restricted LGBTQ advocacy or protest in public forums.

There is an effort by Russian lawmakers to broaden this law with a complete ban on "promotion" of LGBTQ relationships in a positive or neutral light and on showing LBGTQ content in cinemas.

The 25-year-old Kasatkina is ranked 12th in the world and lives and trains in Spain, where the interview was filmed. In the interview, she also calls for an end to fighting in Ukraine.

"For the war to end," Kasatkina said when asked what she wants most in life, and described the conflict as a "complete nightmare."

Russian authorities insist that the conflict is not referred to as a "war," but a "special military operation," and criticism of the war or the Russian military can be punished with fines or prison time.

Kasatkina is shown in the video crying when asked if she fears she may not be able to return to Russia after her comments in the interview.

A Queer Indian sports player and fan’s perspective on this aloto scene

I quote a twitter post by @/gillmurray, “this is one of my favourite moments of aloto. the film, and so much of the discussion about misogyny in women’s sport, ignores what’s often at the root of it: homophobia. this scene not only briefly acknowledges it, but outright discusses it and it is so so important. you can’t have a show/film about how women are forced to be feminine without the perspective of the lesbians who are most badly affected by that, you just can’t, it doesn’t work. i am so glad this show understood that and portrayed it so well”. 

 I actually didn't even see this despite being a queer person who has always played sports, dressed in a so-called masculine way. Couldn’t understand why this scene was talked about so much. Then I realised it probably has to do with me being an Indian. A lot of people here probably don't even know or have ever thought that there's something called LGBTQ+ and the rest are in denial. So deep is the homophobia. Only if people acknowledge that queer people exist would their homophobia show in this way, that they're scared for women/nbs playing sports looking like a bunch of queers. And honestly that stage sounds scarier than the current situation, but we'll have to go through it I guess. 

It also makes me think about how there are way more openly queer people in the Australian, English, New Zealand and the South African women's cricket teams than the Indian because their LGBT rights movements started earlier. It's not like there aren't any Indian LGBT+ cricketers.

Soccer superstar Megan Rapinoe expresses strong support for transgender athletes

In a recent Time cover story interview, Megan Rapinoe said  that she “absolutely” would accept a trans woman on the United States women's national soccer team.

The two-time defending soccer World Cup champion despises policies designed to keep transgender girls and women from playing on female sports teams:

“We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity... It’s particularly frustrating when women’s sports is weaponized ...Oh, now we care about fairness? Now we care about women’s sports? That’s total bullsh-t. And show me all the trans people who are nefariously taking advantage of being trans in sports. It’s just not happening...

“The most amazing thing about sports is that you play and you’re playing with other people, and you’re having fun and you’re being physically active. We’re putting this all through the lens of competition and winning. But we’re talking about people’s lives. That’s where we have to start.”

According to Time Rapinoe believes that questioning transgender participation in women’s sports, as Martina Navratilova and ESPN anchor Sage Steele have done, does harm that reaches far beyond the athletic field:

“I don’t want to mince words about it. Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it’s verbal or otherwise, against trans people. When Martina or Sage or whoever are talking about this, people aren’t hearing it just in the context of elite sports. They’re saying, ‘The rest of my life, this is how I’m going to treat trans people.’”

Would Rapinoe embrace a transgender woman on the U.S. women’s soccer team, even if that woman took the place of someone assigned female at birth? Her answer: 

 “Absolutely. You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument—you’re sort of telling on yourself already—is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”

My eyelids dropped without my permission and sometimes closed. My neck sank in. My hand coincided with the brush, creating a large stripe on the canvas that hid the hours of work I had put into the face.

that was the part of the self-portrait I had the most trouble with.

When I saw my disaster, I groaned and stepped back as not to lash out and destroy the painting.

I looked at it from that distance. I realised that the proportions were off, that I lost the intensity of the pose. that the colours weren't strong enough in important areas, but too bright in others.

"Forty-five minutes," I jumped up from the floor and looked back at the familiar voice.

She chuckled and pointed to the picture, "The proportions are off," and I rolled my eyes at her remark.

"no shit sherlock" I slumped my shoulders and moved my head back and forth as the pain in my back got worse.

From behind me, I felt her arms sneak up to my shoulders and rub them with her calloused hands. "You know, I feel like you're thinking about this too much." I felt her hot breath tickle my ear, so close to my neck, so close to my face.

There wasn't much I could do. I let myself fall into her embrace, both of her arms now towering over me, holding me close, intertwining at my waist.

My body relaxed, but my heart beat so fast that I could feel it in my mouth

"Why don't you want me to make you feel good?

"I don't trust you, Williams." I rolled my eyes and turned on my heel to look at her.

The hairs on my arms bristled, don't let her win, my mind screamed as I tried to keep my gaze on hers.

She closed the space between our bodies, and I realized I wasn't moving.

thereupon she tilted her head a little to the side without taking her eyes off me, her grin widened, oh she knows, she knows she can't win, not his time...

I felt her towering over me, her body was so close to me I could smell her shampoo. I felt the warmth her body radiated, I could hear her breathing. My shoulders slumped forward and I shifted my line of sight.

She was laughing so hard at my pathetic attempt, I am tired, her presence irritated me. "What do you want anyway, Williams?" "I just want to help my lovely roommate," the playful grin on her handsome face grew even wider, "I don't need your help..." Ellie moved closer to me and put a hand behind her ear in a cartoonish way, "Speak up babe, you know I hate it when you whisper."

"I am too busy for your shit, plus, don't you have your exam tomorrow? You should study." my voice sounded a bit rougher than I expected, the hand that was behind her ear, was now in her heart. she opened her mouth, opened her plump lips, and closed her eyes while faking a gasp. "don't know, if you care about me or if you hate me" she turned around after seeing my uninterested reaction "Okay, well. fine... I have something to ask you, or rather propose to you." she picked up her backpack and opened it, holding out a scribbled note to me, her handwriting read.

"Van rent= on Joel

Feeding and extras= on us

Gas= on Joel"

"Okay, do not look at me like that, Y/N!". I handed her back the note, the simplicity of which, actually gave me more questions than answers.

"What's this?"

"t's a road trip, a van trip, an almost-everything-paid-for plan!" her face was beaming, her hands moving from side to side as if it was not obvious enough

"I mean yeah, but why are you showing me this?" didn't she wanted to get as far away from me as possible? As far as I knew, she did not like me.

"Doll, you fried all your little brain cells, trying so to figure out how to get your picture?" she rolled her eyes "look, the plan was Dina" I looked at Ellie with raised eyebrows "our Dina?" "Our Dina" she confirmed, calming down a bit as she was still having a hard time sharing our friend with me. "Her boyfriend Jesse and I." she paused, her features tightening. "but Dina did not want to let you down for spring break, so you are invited." she sat down on the mattress, opened her legs to be more comfortable, propped her forearms on the bed and looked at me.

"So, all I have to pay for is ..."

"Food and extras," she interrupted me, running a hand over her face, "I read it, but what are extras?"

"I do not know, Y/N, souvenirs maybe? Whatever else you want to buy?"

"Where do you wanna go?" "I do not know, Y/N. We are going to the beach, LA maybe, and then to Chicago, Broadway, all that good shit"

"Who's driving?"

"Jesse and me."

"Does your dad know I am going too? Did he agree?" Ellie rolled her eyes.

"He's not my dad. but yeah, he knows. Dina asked him if you could come. he still thinks you are the "cute girl who helped me bring my stuff to the dorm." he likes you more than I do."

"Well, I like him more than you."

"Shut up." she tensed and looked down, shying on me. I considered teasing her a little for that, however I choose to ask a different question.

"For how long? "

"The whole spring break. We'll be back a few days before school start." she said now, bored of looking at me, looking at her hands up close.

"look, sleep on it okay? You look like a living corpse" her remark came after I didn’t answer the last part.  "you wake up tomorrow morning, ditch the first few lectures, finish the painting and you tell me what I wanna hear" she was now standing, rocking side to side.

"and what do you want to hear?" I stepped closer, squinting my eyes, my head moved to the side in anticipation.

The thing is that Megumi is actually such a low maintenance, chill boyfriend. Best boyfriend ever. He always replies to texts quickly. He’s on time to dates. He’s never jealous. They rarely fight, and when they do, it’s always because it’s legitimately important, and they always end up working it out. He lets Yuuji hold(!) his hand(!). The tips of his ears turn fire engine red whenever Yuuji does anything that shows off how Strong and Fast he is, which can be fun for Yuuji. It’s not a competition but also yes it is and Yuuji won it. He locked down The Best Boyfriend Ever. And it only took him 83 days of hardcore crushing, a 27 step plan, and nearly throwing himself off a cliff because he said “hooray” when Megumi told Yuuji he liked him.

He’s Done It. He Secured The Bag. Megumi Is His Boyfriend And The World Is A Perfect Place.

But everyone else seems to have some very strong opinions about that fact. Much stronger opinions than Megumi himself, who lets Yuuji hold(!) his hand(!).

There's a very confusing conversation with Inumaki and Panda about his intentions. Yuuji, very honestly, said that he didn't think he'd get far enough to have any real intentions past what he's already managed, which did not help. Maki had a similar conversation but it involved a sword. God's Perfect Man Who Already Gets Everything He Wants In Life And Certainly Doesn't Need to Butt Into This Too may be returning early from Africa. Yuuji would much rather that Africa keep him, please and thank you. There's a sniper that has him in his sights.

It's worth it.
