Ugh, how does one go about finding old whump art ><

Quite some time ago there was a tumblr blog, I think something bruisedandbeated, bruisedandbloody?...something. Not the one there is now. This one was chockful of collected fanart. Categorized by series, game or even character. I think it deactivated, but every now and then I remember some of the pieces and of course I didn’t save them because having a folder filled with art like that would be questionable... *soft ‘ohoho’*

There was a lovely piece of As*sassin’s creed Sh*aun Hastings tied to a chair, with someone, in a lab coat I think, standing behind him with a riding crop, with an ‘are you ready to talk now?’

And I miss it.

I’m pretty sure the toast wasn’t supposed to tear like this, but that it did only makes everything so much better. I really, REALLY love how all of this is done, and I know I talked about the spoon and stuff last time, so I’ll try not to retread too much, but rewatching it, giving Earbud Assassin so many little quirks and mannerisms where she’s just a little off but charmingly so, making her look pale and sickly and undernourished. Even the background restaurant music with a peppy round of “I Got You, Babe”. It’s all extremely disarming. Detail after detail is laid out to show us, directly and indirectly, that Sassin isn’t really a threat. Even the jacket in the above caps is in military green but comically overlarge, like a kid playing dress-up.

And yet, the scene is BOILING with tension. Partly, of course, because we know that Sassin is very good at Clone Killing. But that’s almost irrelevant at this point. We were shown that she was an unhinged murderer, but that was in her first appearances and over half the season ago. That’s where we began with Sassin, but since, the show has taken pains to show us the woman in the killer. That’s what she’s bringing to this scene, it’s the part we expect and have seen most of her to this point. These scene details do nothing but feed all of that for us.

BUT

I spent so much time on the camera and shit for this, I glossed over what’s happening directly in front of our faces. The body language in this is DIVINE. A perfectly centered table in a perfectly centered booth, bookended by two characters of perfectly equal body proportions. And yet, Sassin completely dominates. Thanks in part to her ovrsized jacket, she’s filled up all of her half, and has crossed the border to take over Prime’s as well. And Sarah! Pressed back into the seat, arms at her sides, giving up every inch she possibly can.

THAT’S THE BEST PART OF ALL THIS. The scene goes to so much effort to show us that Earbud Assassin is a little off, but harmless, and yet that only makes everything even more tense because despite EVERYTHING, we’re not allowed to believe it for a single second because Sarah knows better.

I don’t know enough about acting as either a skill or an art to be able to pinpont what I”m sure are a dozen ways this happens, but jesus wept, the way Tatiana Maslany is able to convey how TERRIFIED Sarah is. This is it, this is what makes this scene work. They threw EVERYTHING at us to feel a particular way, and left the onus of contradicting all of it, every last sly little detail, to her to convey to us in a scene where she doesn’t even have a single line.

AND SHE DOES.

The degree of character work demanded of her in this show is undeniable and amazing, but this is the shit that makes it all really work. Standing ovation, exceptional work, please accept a Costco roast chicken as a sign of my appreciation.
